Lifestyle Letter
Resolutions, out. Healthy lifestyle, in.
H
appy New Year, South Fulton! I’m going to forego the resolutions list this year. Instead, I think I’ll take the first steps toward these simple lifestyle changes: 1. Be healthy. 2. Choose happiness. These are two choices I think we could all use a bit more of in our daily lives. While simply stated, each of us could use some help to getting (re)started. In this fitness themed issue, our staff has taken great care to focus on not only physical fitEditor Erikka Mitchell and ness, but also mental and spiritual wellness. If variety is the Egypt Sherrod. Photo by Tiffany Powell Photography. spice of life, we have a mix of sports and recreational options that will liven up any routine. One might just ignite your passion or suit your fancy. Then, once you’ve worked up an appetite, we’ll introduce you to some healthy eating alternatives plucked right from our own backyard. You’ll find feature on Leslie Zinn of Arden’s Garden, plus yummy healthful recipes and inspiration from Blake to start working on a new you by making good choices in the kitchen. At the Faith Hope Love Mom conference recently, I was inspired toward my lifestyle changes by radio personality Egypt Sherrod, host of HGTV's Flipping Virgins. Sherrod addressed the topic of finding balance as a mom, bringing awareness to mental health, depression and domestic violence, and relying on faith in the darkest of times. Sherrod is also the author of Keep Calm. It's Just Real Estate. Crossfit or triathlons, golf or tennis, find something that exhilarates and renews your spirit! The new year is here and so are new beginnings!

Dear Dr. RJ, I dread this time of year. The holidays are so stressful and they remind me of how lonely things can get, especially since I’ve lost a loved one. I’m constantly on edge and irritable and I can’t find joy in any of it. Is there any hope? -No Happy Holidays
Dear No Happy Holidays, You aren’t alone. Holidays can bring two very common unwanted guests: stress and depression. Use this time to reflect on all that is right in your life. Take on an attitude of gratitude. Focus on those in need, such as homeless mothers and children, disabled veterans, foster children or the elderly. Helping others will give you a sense of fulfillment. This is not to say your feelings aren’t valid, and your problems aren’t real, but healthy distractions will help you get through this difficult time. Take it slow and try not to get caught up in the materialistic craze. Create new memories and reflect on all that is well. Sincerely, Dr. RJ

I Already Had A
cortisone injection ARTICLE PICKENS PATTERSON, III, M.D.
"I
a lready had a cortisone injection." I often hear this phrase from patients presenting to me at initial consultation in my practice as an interventional pain physician. When I ask what type of cortisone injection, I am often greeted with blank stares. Patients and even healthcare providers are relatively unaware of the vast array of interventional procedures used to treat chronic painful conditions. A clear understanding of the procedures performed by interventional pain physicians is essential to being an active participant in a patient’s recovery.
14
South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2016
Cortisone is but one type of steroid that is used in injections used to treat painful conditions. However, many patients use cortisone injection as a synonym for epidural steroid injection. In reality, various steroids are used to inject inflamed joints, nerves, and soft tissues. There are three commonly performed types of epidural steroid injections: caudal epidural steroid injections, translaminar epidural steroid injections, and transforaminal epidural steroid injections. All of these injections should be performed with fluoroscopic guidance. A translaminar injection is often used when a patient has not had surgery and more than one nerve root or disc is involved and the interventionalist needs to spread the steroid across more than one level. A transforaminal injection targets a single nerve root or foramen. Additionally, a transforaminal injection allows access to the anterior epidural space, placing the medication, usually consisting of a steroid and local anesthetic closer to the inflamed area. In a caudal epidural injection, the needle is passed through the sacral hiatus. This type of injection is frequently performed in patients that have had prior back surgery. It is important that an interventionalist be comfortable in not only performing the various types of epidural steroid injections, but in selecting appropriate candidates for each type of injection. Another common injection performed in an interventional pain clinic is called lumbar facet joint injections or medial branch blocks. These injections can be diagnostic or therapeutic. Facet injections are used to treat facet arthropathy or inflammation of the facet joints. The spine contains facet joints from the cervical and lumbar region. The joints frequently become inflamed or degenerated due trauma or the aging process. Pain from facet joints is often described as aching and aggravated with bending and twisting movements such as sweeping or vacuuming. The pain may travel
into the hips and thighs but rarely travels below the knee. Inflammation or degeneration of the joints may or may not be visible on imaging, making an accurate history and physical examination imperative. Diagnostic facet blocks are generally performed by injecting several cc’s of a local anesthetic around or in the facet joints or medial branch nerves (the nerves that supply the facet joints). A positive test is achieved when a patient receives 50% or greater relief from their pain for the expected duration of the local anesthetic. A therapeutic injection includes steroids in an attempt to achieve longer pain relief. When a positive result is achieved with facet blocks or medial branch blocks, many interventionalists will proceed with radiofrequency ablation (RFA). RFA is a procedure that uses heat transmitted through a needle to destroy the sensory nerve (medial branch nerve) to the facet joint. Great care is taken to avoid injury to a motor nerve and to properly identify the sensory nerve, both visually and electrically. Patients undergoing an RFA following a successful facet or medial branch injection can expect to achieve pain relief for 6 to 18 months, at which time the procedure can be repeated. Sympathetic blocks are also frequently performed in an interventional pain clinic. These blocks are often used to treat complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Lumbar sympathetic blocks are used to treat sympathetically mediated pain or CRPS of the
lower extremity and involve injecting local anesthetics around the sympathetic chain near the lumbar vertebral bodies under fluoroscopic or CT guidance. For CRPS involving the upper extremities stellate ganglion blocks are performed. The stellate ganglion is generally located at the level of a tubercle on the transverse process of C6. The sympathetic blocks are often repeated, initially as frequently as every few days, when attempting to control the symptoms and progression of CRPS. They are always performed in conjunction with physical therapy, arguably the most important treatment for CRPS. Several other injections are often performed in an interventional pain practice including joint injections for joint pain and arthritis, trigger point injections for myofascial pain, and a variety of injections for abdominal and pelvic pain including celiac plexus blocks, and superior and inferior hypogastric nerve blocks along with a variety of peripheral nerve blocks. If all other treatments fail and a patient is not a surgical candidate, a select group of patients benefit from spinal cord stimulation or intrathecal pump implantation. The interventional procedures at the disposal of a well trained and experienced interventional pain physician is extensive and often accelerate an injured patient’s recovery. It is important that all healthcare workers be aware of the various treatment options and available interventions. With proper patient and physician selection these procedures are often an integral part of recovery.

A Healthy New You in the New Year TEN TIPS THAT WORK ARTICLE CHARLES BLAKE
N
early every January I see a peak in business from clients who've made a new year's resolution to get in shape. Most of these clients fall off the wagon by February, and of course, there are those who manage to accomplish their goals. In my experience, there are some common traits and steps that can be taken to help you accomplish your fitness goal. • Make Healthy Living a Habit. Studies have found that anything that you do for 21 consecutive days becomes habit. Commit yourself to exercising five days a week for three straight weeks. Consistency is the key. The challenge is not letting excuses like these get you off track. Consistency is the key. • Get some sleep. You should get a minimum of 8 hours a sleep a night. Sleep supports weight loss and has a direct impact on the hormones that promotes weight loss. A lack of sleep disturbs the hormonal imbalance. A good night sleep also assists the body in relieving the natural mental and physical stresses of the day; and equips the body with the energy needed for a vigorous workout.
16
South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2016
• Try to get your work out in as early in your day as possible. Getting your metabolism going early provides calorie burning benefit throughout the entire day. Working out early also reduces the chances of other things (working late, call from child’s school, work emergency) from getting in the way of your workout. • Be Patient. Weight gain is a gradual process and the same can be said of weight loss. Rome was not built in a day. Be patient through your journey. Start off slow and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your work outs. • Invest in proper workout attire. Nothing impedes a workout more than having to constantly pull or tug at your clothing. Pur-
chase functional and comfortable workout clothing. Select shoes that are appropriate for the activity at hand. • Atmosphere is everything. Find a place or space that energizes and motivates your work out. That may be a room in your home or at a gym, but wherever you work out, it should be an atmosphere that you enjoy spending time in. • Find an accountability partner. As the name implies, an "accountability partner" is someone who will hold you accountable for your fitness goals. Give that person the permission to check you if you get off track. This person might be a trainer, friend, or family member, but it must be someone who is committed to keeping you motivated. • Variety is the spice of life. Exercise should be fun. Try different forms of working out. Explore Zumba, jump rope, step aerobics, recreational sports, resistance training, speed walking, working out solo, joining a class or group workout session. Keep it fresh and exciting. • Find natural opportunities to get your body moving. Park at the back of the parking lot and as far away from the entry point as possible; take the stairs at work; walk to the sandwich shop for lunch; or walk down the hall to speak with a co-worker versus using the phone or email. • Change your relationship with food. Begin making healthy choices in your diet. Choose lean meats, proteins, fruits and vegetables. Control your portion sizes and eat until you’re satisfied, not full. Planning your meals in advance, including keeping healthy snacks on hand at all times. Finally, drink at least two liters of water daily to properly transport nutrients through the cells of your body. Body By Blake is a full service health and wellness company, dedicated to helping families change their lives through optimal fitness training and proper nutrition. Rooted in Community: A conversation with Leslie Zinn, owner and CEO of Arden’s Garden.
ARTICLE ERIKKA MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY TIFFANY POWELL AND PROVIDED
L
eslie Zinn, an entrepreneur, wife and mother, lives right here in South Fulton’s beautiful College Park. She has an awesome story of overcoming adversity in her life. And, as we chat in the office of the East Point production factory, the overwhelming theme is giving back. The healthy food store that focuses on nutritious juice and the famous 3-day detox was founded by Arden, Leslie’s mother, a woman more motivated by helping people improve their diets and eating habits than making a profit. But her passion along with perfect timing has translated to success. Where Arden left off with creativity, Leslie picked up with business acumen, in spite of some of the unique challenges that face family businesses. My publisher and I sat down with Leslie at their beautiful East Point headquarters facility that at first housed a factory for the famous assortment of juices but soon transitioned to include into a retail store due to popular demand for the products onsite. She was kind enough to answer a few questions for South Fulton Lifestyle.
20
South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2016
Arden's Garden is an Atlanta-based family-owned juice company founded in 1995. It has 13 stores in Atlanta and sells bottled juices in 5 states: Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and both North and South Carolina.
1. I READ A LITTLE ABOUT THE ARDEN’S GARDEN STORY ON THE WEBSITE. CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS A BIT MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY?
My Mom, Arden, has always been a HUGE health nut and she was into juicing back in the 60s. All my life, she fed my brother and me a weird blended concoction which was a mix of whatever fruits, vegetables, and herbs that she was into at the time. We NEVER had real FOOD for breakfast. In 1963, she learned about a juicer called a Norwalk, which she really wanted to get but it cost $1,500 which she could not afford. Fast forward to 1993, she is still pining away for this Norwalk Cold-Press, only now it is $2,200, and she still cannot afford it. But she decides, I don’t want to go my whole life never getting this juicer so she chooses the All-American option and buys it on her credit card. To make herself feel better about the purchase, she called all of her friends and offered to make them juice. And that is how Arden’s Garden was born. 2. THIS IS OUR FITNESS ISSUE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF JUICING?
There are so many benefits to juicing but here are the top 3. Rejuvenating - Fresh juices contain about 2-2.5 pounds of produce in every 16 oz. bottle. Because fresh juice is absorbed through your abdominal wall, digestion never happens so your body gets a lot of nutrients without taxing itself trying to assimilate them. Juicing promotes healing in our bodies. Great nutrition - With juicing, you can mix some super healthy veggies (kale, spinach, celery, cucumbers, beets, etc.) with fresh fruits and have something that tastes great and is extremely healthy. You can easily get all the green veggies that you need for an entire day in one smoothie or juice. Juices are also a great way to get kids to have their fruits and vegetables. You can also teach kids that sweet stuff does not have to contain sugar. Expedient - You can drink a juice (or 2), instead of a meal. Juice is convenient and easy, as long as you have us make it. 3. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE MAGIC OF CREATING YOUR PRODUCT HERE IN SOUTH FULTON IN THE HEART OF EAST POINT.
Moving to South Fulton has been the MOST unbelievable transition for us. We moved from midtown in 2003 and the change that has occurred in our business has been amazing. We had not planned to open a retail store in South Fulton for many years but people kept knocking on our door so we opened much earlier. Now, our East Point store is our #1 store. We NEVER expected it, but we are thrilled for ourselves, as well as, the community. It speaks volumes to how dynamic this area is.

4. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH THE SOUTH FULTON LIFESTYLE READER?
We have found being in South Fulton to be a very inspiring and energetic place to work. We feel very optimistic about the opportunities that are available to businesses here and we are hoping to continue to grow in the area. Leslie Zinn is the most unassuming of CEO’s. Her life serves as a testimony to the healthy lifestyle juicing brings from weight loss, energy, and fertility to skin elasticity and youthful appearance. The mission of Arden’s Garden is to bring convenient, healthy items to people throughout Atlanta and across the southeast. This is especially important in parts of South Fulton where fresh fruits and vegetables are scarce. Zinn recounts a time when taking her kids to play in an area park and other children had never even seen basic vegetables like cucumbers, carrots, and celery. Juice is a tasty introduction to some other veggies and Zinn recommends Multi Max flavor as a point of entry to juicing, with a light flavor that even kids can enjoy. Zinn is deeply rooted in South Fulton. The East Point headquarters is bursting at the seams but they would love to stay due to their commitment to this community. Zinn looks forward to revitalizing a previous internship program with Tri-Cities High School. In addition, Zinn would love to help people struggling with addiction make a fresh start. The best is yet to come.

CROSSFIT TAKES OVER IN COLLEGE PARK A Conversation with Mike, Nic, and Mitch Griffin ARTICLE ERIKKA MITCHELL | PHOTOGRAPHY TIFFANY POWELL
C
rossFit College Park is located right off Virginia Avenue, near College Park Cemetery and is host of the popular Graveyard Games is a high performance, strength and endurance partnered competition designed to measure work capacity. The owners gave South Fulton Lifestyle some candid answers to our many questions about CrossFit here on the southside. Mike, or “Dad” as he is known in the gym, was a two-sport high school athlete and habitual weight lifter from the age of 15. He has completed the CrossFit Level 1 trainer course as well as the CrossFit Mobility Course. In the 2015 CrossFit Open Competition, he finished 77th in the world in his age division. Nic was a competitive gymnast until the age of 12 and played several sports in middle and high school. He is a Level 1 CrossFit trainer and a CrossFit Kids Trainer. Mitch competed in gymnastics for the University of Minnesota where he was a four-year letter winner. He is also still very active in judging gymnastics at the national and international level. He is a Level 1 Certified CrossFit Coach as well as a CrossFit Mobility Coach.

SFL: GIVE OUR READERS A LITTLE BACKGROUND ABOUT THE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT AND HOW YOU GOT INTO IT.
We discovered the CrossFit.com website in 2008. Mitch and Mike (“Dad”) had always been regular gym goers and were looking for something different. Nic had been more casual with his gym rou24

tine. He would mostly go to shoot basketball, bench and occasionally kick into a handstand. We watched the website and the suggested workouts for a month before trying a workout. The first WOD (workout of the day) we tried consisted on only body weight movements and lasted roughly 10 minutes. It was all a blur. All three of us lay on the ground for at least 15 minutes before we felt like we could stand up. How were we so exhausted after 10 minutes of working out? Why was no one else around us lying on the floor huffing and puffing? From that point on, we would never work out the same way. We met daily at 4:30 in a local chain gym to do CrossFit. A few weeks into our workout routine, we attracted a lot of attention in the gym. Several people began to meet and work out with us every day. Fast-forward two years and we decided it was time for us to open our own place. SFL: HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM OR HOW IS CROSSFIT BETTER THAN OTHER WORKOUT PLANS? WHAT DO
M
PEOPLE LOVE ABOUT IT?
Most people who begin a workout program do so in order to become more fit. When asked what being more fit means and how to become fitter, people usually do not have a good answer. CrossFit differs from other programs because it has a working definition of what it means to be fit. For those that follow Cross-
Fit’s definition of fitness, it means developing a solid foundation on the 10 domains of fitness: stamina, strength, agility, speed, accuracy, coordination, balance, cardio respiratory endurance, power and flexibility. We want our athletes (yes, if you are working out in our gym, whether you are 8 or 80 you are an athlete) to be a jack of all trades and master of none. In other words we spend time working on the 10 domains of fitness and do not spend time only working on what we are good at. We firmly believe that people will see the best results when they follow the tried and true method of performing constantly varied workouts utilizing functional movements and performed at a high intensity. From the workout side people love the challenge of the daily workouts and the supportive environment they perform it in. People encourage each other to do their best. They get to know each other and will get a text or email if they do not see their classmates at a class. We provide people with an hour block a day where they can focus on their individual goals and forget about whatever stress they are dealing with. In our facility, they can devote their energy to doing some things they may have never thought they were physically capable of doing. We are also a very community-driven gym. We have Christmas parties, potluck dinners and community events throughout the year.
T
SFL: DESCRIBE SOME AMAZING RESULTS YOU HAVE SEEN.
The first question people usually ask is how much weight people have lost while attending CrossFit College Park. We have had athletes lose over 100 pounds and we are proud of their hard work, but weight loss is just one of the amazing things we have seen.
The most rewarding aspect of being a CrossFit gym owner is seeing the change in people’s lives. We have seen a soccer mom in her 40s get her first unassisted pull up. We have seen a 70-year-old woman ecstatic because she was able to fill and lift her 5 gallon gas can into her truck without assistance. We have seen people no longer have to take blood pressure and cholesterol medication because their numbers have returned to normal levels. We have had members bounce back from surgery and serious illness at a rate that shocked their doctors. Our goal at CFCP is to improve our members’ quality of life through a dedication to healthy living in a positive environment.
W
SFL: TELL OUR READERS SOMETHING ABOUT WORKING IN THE COLLEGE PARK AREA.
We love the College Park and Tri-Cities area. Nic is a four-block walk or skateboard ride from work. Mitch just moved to the Tri-Cities, too. We love the families and community that have been so welcoming and encouraging to us. We love the direction the area is heading and are excited to be a part of it.
A
SFL: ANY TIPS ON GETTING STARTED? CAN ANYONE DO CROSSFIT?
Absolutely anyone can do CrossFit. We have so many people ask if they need to “get in shape” before coming in and the answer is no. We are ready to help anyone that walks in the door, from the former college athlete to people who have never touched a weight in their lives. Everything we do in our gym can be scaled to any level. We run a 12-session foundations course for anyone new to CrossFit. In the foundations class we have a small coach-to-athlete ratio and spend time going over how to properly and safely perform movements we will do in CrossFit. We always have coaches working with members to ensure they are moving in a safe fashion. If you are interested in the foundations program, you can contact us at CrossfitCollegePark.com. ith Black Triathletes Association approaching 2,000 members, the Black
Triathletes Association (BTA) is an organization that promotes fitness and health through the sport of triathlon to the black community. This group offers a place for black triathletes to support, offer advice and mostly encourage one another in multisport activities. They welcome all levels of experience from first Sprint Tri to full IRONMAN. It might be useful to offer some background here. What exactly is a triathlon and how did this start? According to Felecia Le-Ray Turk, “In the 1970s, a group of military folks in Hawaii decided to challenge each other and determine which group of athletes were the

strongest: swimmers, cyclists or runners. So they decided to have a race, which consisted of a 2.4 miles swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run, and whoever won the race would be called an "IRONMAN." Over time, these types of races became extremely popular and many people started to participate in them. Nowadays, triathlons come in all shapes and size (as do triathletes). IRONMAN (CON TI N UED)
I am full throttle training mode," says Turk. "Triathlon training is also an excellent way to cross train across various disciplines. If you're lucky, the sport of triathlon can also give you an opportunity to travel to exotic race locations (sometimes affectionately referred to as a ‘trication).” BTA FOUNDER TONY BROWN: ADDING SOME COLOR TO THE MULTISPORT MOVEMENT
They call Tony Brown the Adrenaline Guy. But Brown, the founder and president of the Black Triathletes Association (BTA), isn’t your typical competitive athlete. He never played sports as a youth and despite the Atlanta Falcons tailgate parties he hosts across from the Georgia Dome, he’s not a huge sports fanatic. But in a three-year time period, he’s completed a few marathons and several 70.3 triathlons. Just recently, he successfully completed the IRONMAN 140.6 triathlon in Louisville, Kentucky, along with 20 other athletes from BTA. “When I first started triathlon, I found myself as one of a few African-American athletes at a race,” says Brown. It's not surprising considering minority participation in multisport is one of the lowest of most sports. In a 2009 study, USA Triathlon found that African-Americans accounted for only one-half of one percent of its 550,000 member triathletes. Brown wanted to find a way bring awareness of the sport in a way that made triathlon look “cool” to those reluctant to participate. As a technology consultant, he leveraged his skills in digital marketing, media production, graphic design, software development and comedy to create and grow the community known as the Black Triathletes Association (BTA). BTA is a national organization that promotes the sport of triathlon to the black community. What started as a social media group has grown to become the world's largest community for black triathletes. Its mission is to encourage, inspire and support each other's multisport goals. In less than a year, BTA has grown to attract over 2,000 members making it the most popular Facebook group amongst black triathletes. Hundreds of its registered members compete in various races across the country with experience levels including beginners, age-group champions, Kona competitors and even the first African-American Professional triathlete. As an official club of USA Triathlon, the group participated in the 2014-2015 USAT National Challenge Competition and won 1st place in the Swim Session, placed 2nd in their division and was top 10 overall in the nation. This was an incredible accomplishment for the club's inaugural season. Their notoriety as an IRONMAN TriClub has attracted partnerships with Infinit Nutrition, Roka Sports, SwimOutlet and others. The club celebrates the accomplishments of its members and communicates news through its #BlackTriathlete Weekly newsletter. Members are able to locate potential training partners in their city with an interactive Member Map on its website. BTA apparel is proudly worn by athletes to communicate that they are a part of the #BlackTriathlete movement. And for more popular triathlons, Race Team Ambassadors organize Meet & Greets to facilitate networking and fellowship with one another. To learn more about the Black Triathletes Association, visit their website at BlackTriathlete.org. 28

TALKING TO
KIDS MONEY about
BY TODD BURKHALTER
Talking Money with Kids AN ACTION PLAN
Did your parents’ teach you about saving early in life? Do you wish that you had a chance to learn how to manage your personal finances earlier in life? The fact is that most children adopt the habits and philosophies that their parents have about money. Parents will often spend large amounts of time teaching skills that children will naturally pick up, but never teach or even discuss one of the most important habits in life, how to handle savings and money. “Odds are your kids will figure out how to tie their shoes. I do not see many adults without this skill, but I meet people every day that haven’t learned how to save” – Todd Burkhalter This conversation goes best when you have an action plan. ACTION ITEMS
Start by giving your child an allowance for chores completed. An allowance isn’t a birthright, but payment for work completed. Getting this wrong breeds entitlement! Next, use this simple yet powerful phrase, Give Save Live, to instill an important life lesson on how to manage money. We Give first, Save next and then Live on the rest. Allow them to own this philosophy by controlling these three areas: 30
South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2016
Giving – allow your child to give to something/somebody that he/she wants to help (where they will see the result or impact) This creates joy in giving as opposed to feeling obligated. LESSON/VERSE: 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7
Saving – allow your child to see and understand where their sav-
ings is going – Discuss the statements and how/why it grows. In time, allow a portion of their savings to be used for a larger purchase, thus reinforcing the impact of saving. Older children should be allowed to invest a portion of their savings into companies that they like and will want to follow. This step increases their enjoyment and understanding of investing LESSON/VERSE: PROVERBS 13:11
Living – allow them to enjoy the remaining portion
Remember that children often mimic what they see in their parents. So I encourage everyone to live by the premise: Give, Save, Live. Even us parents.
Please follow Todd Burkhalter, Financial Consultant and Drive Planning on Twitter and Facebook for ideas like this and many others which will enhance your personal net worth and your business' value.

FHL Mom Conference LOVING YOURSELF INTENTIONALLY ARTICLE AARONICA B. COLE | PHOTOGRAPHY TIFFANY POWELL

otherhood… The world is made up of us but yet there are so many moments that we feel alone in this journey. I can remember being a single mother reading people’s status updates that said things like, “Being a mom is the best job in the world!” or “I love being a mom! Everyday is filled with so much joy!” I would be reading these status updates as I breastfed my baby or nursed her back to health after one of her thousands of ear infections or after she had just screamed, “I don’t love

you!” wondering when I would begin to feel like all my days were filled with endless joy being a mother. That day has yet to come but what I’ve learned is that in this journey of motherhood, it’s my joy that needs to be a top priority as well as loving myself with as much intention as I love my family. I had the honor of attending the Faith Hope Love Mom Conference in November and it was an inspiring and really motivational environment where I was surrounded by all moms. Every-
thing from the round tables we sat at to the phenomenal speakers fostered much needed conversations to be had with other mothers. Listening to the speakers, the underlying theme throughout the day was one anchored in intentional self-love and care. Motivational speaker and author Diana A. Watley spoke about loving yourself out loud and not being afraid to leave your baggage behind so you can live freely a life of happiness. Fashion designer Tracy Nicole shared an intimate story about her

upbringing that lead to incredible strength as a mom and woman. Psychologist Dr. Joyce Irons was our keynote speaker and provided tips and techniques in self-care. Radio personality, HGTV host and author Egypt Sherrod encouraged us to see us in the same truths we see others in. The conference felt like a warm hug from one of your sisterfriends that already knew what you were dealing with. As moms, wives, business owners, etc. we go so long without taking ourselves that this conference was needed. So often we go to conferences to make us better, writers, better mothers, better professionals but how often do you get an opportunity that says, “Take a day and focus on you.” That’s what the Faith Love Hope Mom Conference was for me. It was that opportunity for me to say, “I take care of everyone else. Now it’s time for me to be intentional about taking care of myself.” Be intentional about the love and care you give yourself, you deserve it.

The question clearly identifies there is a problem, thereby demanding self-analysis. Another translations state, “Do you want to get well?” Simply put, getting better doesn’t happen by osmosis. Wholeness, wellness and healthy mean different things to different cultures, classes of people, one thing that is the same, the box checked, is personal. Having to choose on a daily basis what encompasses peace, safety and success is an intentional process. At this time of the year commercials bombard us with visuals that SCREAM our continued success or lack thereof in eating, exercise and financial habits. My day always begins with some form of spiritual meditation, a water encounter—bath or shower depending on time constraints. The negative ions found in water conductivity support my very non-expensive way of healing me. Then I listen to music— gospel, jazz, or wherever Spirit leads, but it is consistently positive, uplifting, inspiring sounds! Cooking for love ones, and serving peoples both spiritually and emotional in community is innate; while I seek to find reasons to smile or laugh. As a former spiritual care coordinator and palliative (treatment rendered to alleviate pain, without curing the disease) team member, our meetings were comprised of a certified physician, social worker, a team of nurses and chaplain, along with an intermittent pharmaceutical advisor. Hospice provides acute care to individuals and their families with a terminal prognosis. The goal is to ensure the holistic care for both patient and their primary care givers. Life as we experience it cannot be compartmentalized; there are natural crossovers and blends. Remember the movie “Crash?” The cyclical perspective of this movie left viewers all shaking our heads, as Ludacris is seen finally riding in the back of the bus. Wellness is finding those activities, people and places which cultivate authentic balance. The creator’s greatest passion is for our lives to be filled with harmonic practices which produce well-meaning fulfillment, within us and community. Sometimes that means separation, spiritual cleansing, or stepping it up a notch in your already well thought out tailor-made plan. “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health, and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
