Chasing Childhood Dreams H

ey South Fulton, Can I pose a question? When you were a kid and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up, what did you say? The answers of our South Fulton Lifestyle staff were telling, if not surprising. Donna, our amazing, patient, Sales and Office assistant wanted to be a teacher. And our hardworking advertising Tiffany Powell salesperson, Stephanie, envisioned herself as at first as a singer Photography (though she says the world is better because this dream did not come true) and later an architect. Amongst our fabulous publishers, the ever-brilliant Michelle set her sites sights on becoming a doctor and our taskmaster Donald wanted to serve as a police officer. As for me, I signed my name, “Erikka Searles, Future Poet” throughout middle and high school before I discovered that sometimes even the best artists could literally starve before they gained any fame. Then I settled on the more stable librarian before the museum world and art caught my eye. Writing all the while, I taught as an Art History professor before I became the editor of this darling little community magazine, a perfect showcase for your businesses and products alongside your neighbor’s accolades and good news. This Arts issue focuses on making those childhood dreams come true. Often our dreams are rooted in the arts (Who ever says, “When I grow up, I want to be an actuary?”) If you’ve got stars in your eyes and want to work in the movie industry, look no further than Atlanta Metro Studios right here in South Fulton in the rapidly developing Union City. We feature some budding artists from ballerinas to actors to painters that are honing their craft right in our neighborhood at the South Fulton Arts Center. Which little girl among us did not fantasize about a sparkly dress and an elegant coach like those featured in our Prom Preview, enough to rival the princesses in any fairy tale? All of this and more await you in our Arts issue! South Fulton, it’s never too late to realize your dreams! What’s your second (or third) career going to be? P.S. And if your dreams have led you to have products that you’d like to share with your neighbors, please email me at EMitchell@LifestylePubs.com for a chance at a spotlight in our upcoming Homegrown issue. Also, don’t miss our South Fulton Lifestyle Night at the Hawks game on March 25. See details for special 30% tickets on page 19.

ost people recognize the fact that the practice of medicine is often a combination of art and science. In my opinion, a good physician is a well-tuned practitioner of both the art and science of medicine. A diagnosis only tells part of the story. Only after adding the knowledge of a patient’s family history, living situation, work life or stress, etc., can an individualized treatment plan be complete. For instance, we are aware that depression and stress can cause the exacerbation of pain symptoms. The recent loss of a job or a loved one can also trigger certain symptoms. Recognizing how these life stressors can influence an illness is in many ways an art. Similarly, developing a communication strategy and a personality that allows for open communication between the physician and patient mirrors art in many regards. There is no better example of art in medicine than the ability to directly, yet compassionately deliver a difficult diagnosis to a patient and his or her family while simultaneously describing the treatment options in an effective manner. As medicine continues to become a more evidence-based and a numbers driven profession, it is the duty of physicians to ensure that the art of medicine is not lost in the shuffle. The physicians and more importantly the patients and their families will benefit from this strategy. This is not to say that there is no need for a more standardized approach to treating illness, with the expectation of streamlining care, cutting costs and producing quality results. As patient populations and needs have grown, the requirement for consistency and precision has taken priority. Ultimately, the goal of all health care should be to provide the best possible care to each individual patient. But a structured scientific approach does not always allow for individual differences between individual patients and physicians. As physicians, we will continue to fight for the ability to treat each patient as an individual, not a case number. Healthcare consumers must continue to demand that insurance companies allow their providers to do what is best for them as an individual, whether or not it perfectly aligns with an algorithm and allow physicians to practice the art of medicine. Good physicians strive to work towards solutions that are consistent and scientifically proven, but are not afraid to use their art to color outside of the lines when necessary, for the benefit of their patients.

Center for Civil and Human Rights A TRIP BACK IN TIME TO ENSURE EQUAL RIGHTS FOR THE FUTURE ARTICLE ERIKKA MITCHELL | PHOTOGRAPHY TIFFANY POWELL AND PROVIDED BACKGROUND

The Center for Civil and Human Rights in downtown Atlanta is an engaging cultural attraction that connects the American Civil Rights Movement to today’s Global Human Rights Movements. Its purpose is to create a safe space for visitors to explore the fundamental rights of all human beings so that they leave inspired and empowered to join the ongoing dialogue about human rights in their communities. EXPERIENCE

The tagline for the Center for Civil and Human Rights is the “Best Museum in Atlanta.” I am inclined to agree. I was blessed to visit this impressive museum with my father, mother, brother and son on a Tuesday morning during the holiday break. This was an opportunity to explore the museum without the crowds that you might expect on the weekend. Perusing the entire space, including the first floor Voice to the Voiceless: Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection exhibit of the civil rights leader’s papers took about an hour and a half. I was able to experience the museum through a multigenerational lens, using the Across Generations questions from CivilAndHumanRights.org. The whole family enjoyed the mix of traditional visuals such as large photographic displays and paintings with new technology and interactive portions. My son in particular liked tuning the old school channels on the large box televisions and hearing the voices of various civil rights leaders. My parents were visibly moved by certain aspects of the Rolls Down Like Water: The American Civil Rights Movement exhibit and I even caught them shedding a tear or two as we moved through the emotionally 16

South Fulton Lifestyle | March 2016

charged exhibit. The exhibit takes you on a chronological journey from segregation through the civil rights movement. I had my four year old son with me so I checked at the information desk to make sure it wouldn’t be too intense for him. Other than the lunch counter experience, which was rather intense for me and several other adults, there were not any areas that he could not handle. In fact, he keeps asking me when we are going back to see the “movie bus,” a simulated bus with a projector where he learned the meaning of the word “protest.” He also enjoyed the interactive parts of the exhibits, especially making a feedback video at the end of our visit. My favorite part of the experience was the Spark of Conviction: The Global Human Rights Movement exhibit, particularly the part where discriminatory practices were explored first person, projected onto mirrors. The effect was that you were able to almost literally put yourself in the speaker’s shoes. Just like that you experienced what it was like to be fired from your job for being Muslim or arranged in a marriage against your will. In addition, the total package was part of our visit from the architecture of the building to the cascading fountain in the back of the building. Young and old members of your family, visitors and Atlanta residents alike, will be enlightened on your visit. WHEN YOU GO

The Center for Civil and Human Rights is located at 100 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd., Atlanta, GA 30313-1807. Parking in the Pemberton Place lot near the GA Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola was a snap. General admission is $15 for adults and FREE for children 3 & under. Discounts available for kids, seniors, students, and active military.

ecisions-Decisions! As prom season approaches in Atlanta’s South Fulton community, many decisions

have to be made. In this evolving era of technology and social media, teen proms have become more than a high

school tradition. Prom Night has morphed into the social event of the season where Instagram is king. Most young ladies and gentlemen are gearing up for the most extravagant “Promposal” or the event of asking a potential date out to the prom with hopes that their creative ideas to ask the big question will be captured on social media and go viral. Regardless of new trends in accepting and attending the ultimate date night, there are a few etiquette guidelines that will help make planning the event less stressful and drama free for teens and parents.

• Create a Prom Budget Financing the prom can cost a small fortune without proper planning and communication. The question is who pays? Traditionally, the gentleman paid for all expenses including tickets, limo, pictures, and dinner. Today, whoever is asking, whether gentleman or young lady, should pay for the prom tickets. The other costs should be agreed upon among the families well in advance in order to mitigate confusion.

• Choose the Date No longer does the young lady have to wait to be asked to the prom. Today, young ladies ask gentlemen and groups of friends attend the prom together. Rule of thumb, after a prom invitation has been accepted, go out on a date prior to the prom in order to become acquainted with one another in a social setting outside of school. In addition, families should meet to agree upon prom night expectations, curfews and schedule. Be mindful that once an invitation to the prom has been accepted and plans are made, teens should keep their word and stick to the date.

• Discuss Prom Attire

Prom attire may vary from school to school. Masquerade, Mardi Gras and Hollywood are a few popular prom themes that may dictate the attire. Prom invitations should address the theme and become the guide to what to wear. When deciding the color schemes of the dress and the tuxedo, parties should discuss in advance before purchases and rentals are made in order to avoid mismatch attire. Flowers are an integral and symbolic part of the attire. Gentlemen should order corsages two weeks in advance and pin on the ladies’ left side of the gown; ladies should order boutonnieres two weeks in advance for gentlemen and place on the left lapel.

Working your way up through a department, being an indispensable member of a creative team and learning as much as you can about how to interact with other departments is the best route to success. There are numerous artists in every department on every production creating something where formerly there was nothing. It’s also pretty great when your mother or friends see your name in the credits! With the goal of creating opportunities for what will be the next generation of Georgian filmmakers, we have created a film scholarship program in association with Union City Mayor Vince Williams and Fulton County Schools to send Fulton County High School graduates to the two-semester Digital Film Certificate Program at Clayton State University. The certificate program is part of the Georgia Film Academy and was developed to teach film tradecraft and give students an opportunity to learn basic on-set skills, become familiar with production terms and procedures as well as gain hands-on experience working on productions. The combination of class-based teaching and on-set experience gives students a great start toward an entry-level position in production. We could not be more proud to be a part of the Union City family and are working every day to ensure Atlanta Metro Studios will make a long lasting, positive impact in South Fulton. goal to serve. Narviar Griffin, Interim Arts Program Manager,is a Clark-Atlanta alumna, and a former dancer and dance instructor. She is the heart and soul of South Fulton Arts Center (SFAC). She brings a passion and authenticity to the center that cannot be denied. When there were kids in the afterschool program who needed something to do, she offered them the opportunity to attend afternoon courses at SFAC free of charge. Narviar Griffin listens. Clients asked Griffin if guitar classes could be offered at the Center and now a South Fulton resident teaches guitar classes at SFAC. The youth theater class originated following a conversation that Griffin had with parents regarding desires for a theater class for children at a community event. Griffin wants her clients to receive the best, so she collaborates with an array of organizations throughout Georgia including but not limited to; Ballethnic, Songs for Kids Foundation, Zoo Atlanta and Room to Move Dance Company, Atlanta Print Makers Studio via Spelman College and Museum of Fine Art, and Hammonds House Museum. Most South Fulton residents remember hearing or reading about the 2015 Family Film Festival highlighting work from Karyn Parsons. It was held at the South Fulton Arts Center. Griffin is currently in the planning stages for the 2016 Family Film Festival. Among other events, this year SFAC will also host two Zumba Dance Parties, the New African Grove Theater Company, the Atlanta Quilt Festival and Fancy Nancy the Musical. Griffin truly understands the integral relationship that SFAC has with the community and welcomes the opportunity to nourish talents. Griffin has mentored a client who began as a student from the age of 7, who became an assistant instructor, and now that former student is in her final year at the Boston Conservatory. Whether it’s providing a hug, providing a smile, or providing information, Naviar Griffin works really hard to make sure that her clients leave happy and are satisfied in receiving what they want or need from South Fulton Arts Center.

CHALLENGING EXPECTATIONS:

The Infiniti QX60 ARTICLE MICHELLE WILLIS

I

f you research the new QX60, the tagline states “Challenge your Expectations of Versatile Elegance,” and that’s exactly what it will do. This luxury crossover sports utility vehicle will force you to cross out your expectations from the view on the outside once you familiarize yourself with the cockpit. It screams take the family for a long trip and explore the horizon. It marries comfort and luxury in a Venus fly trap that might not let you go. So, be prepared on your test drive to take this one home. The comfort that has the capacity to seat 7 extends into the next 2 rows also, lending you the ability to slide the second row back and forth to suit any of your travel needs. The tilting feature on the rear seats gives you the Captain’s Chair feel and gives new meaning to the term “back seat driver.” If you have children that go from best friends to “Frenemies,” in the blink of an eye, you will be pleased with the amount of personal space afforded to you in the spacious interior with adequate trunk room for your heart’s desire. ride. This chariot handles like a sedan, and gives you the comfort and child towing capacity of a large SUV. I found the ride more comfortable in the Normal mode vs the Sport mode. The Sport mode was to optimize performance, but seemed to only bring the engine noise into the cabin and sacrificed comfort for performance. It seemed out of character for what this vehicle was trying to accomplish. The creature comforts and safety aspects of this vehicle raise its head and shoulders above the competition. I especially appreciated the remote start during the last few weeks of cold enabling me to warm the cabin before going outside. The most unique feature was the “Eye in the Sky” surround sound view that gave you a 360 degree real time view from above of your vehicle while trying to park. This in addition to the backup collision prevention system makes parallel parking a breeze for anyone. This is definitely the vehicle you want to take for your drivers tests. Overall, the QX60 was a pleasure to drive. My entire family was able to benefit in some aspect of unprecedented luxury and comfort. I thoroughly enjoyed the feel on the open road and the styling had me at hello.

Dr. Raushannah Ask “Dr. RJ” Johnson-Verwayne Dear Dr. RJ, I’ve had so many setbacks, I feel like I’m constantly drowning. I’m in the process of divorce, I may lose my home, and in the midst of it all I’m pulled in so many different directions between my job, my children, my fraternity, my church, etc. What do I do? I’m completely lost. -Head Barely Above Water

Dear Still Stagnant, Life was not promised to us absent of pain. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is unnatural. Often when we are in a seemingly unbearable situation, worrying is like second nature and pervasive worry creates suffering. My advice to you is to just take one moment at a time. Try not to fixate on the past and try not to worry about the future. Face each challenge day by day and celebrate small successes and victories. Remember, tough times don’t last, but tough people do. Sincerely, Dr. RJ
