Lifestyle Letter
Long Live Love I
sit here writing this letter reminiscing. It was five years ago but it feels like yesterday. On a rainy Wednesday night, our family and friends gathered downtown. The rooftop venue overlooking the Aquarium and Centennial Park was surrounded by a thick layer of fog. Omar and I were getting married after being together for nearly seven years. My hair, Chuck Williams Photography a fluffy Afro, and our cake were adorned with my signature big, floppy butterflies but those had nothing on the ones dancing in my stomach. As my dad walked me down the aisle, my fingernails dug deeply into his arm, I was terrified. The sensation was a surprise. This was my Marine, big, strong, handsome, smart, brave and confident, in spite of being little nerdy. I wanted to marry him more than anything and yet, there I stood, nervous, shaking. He was my very best friend and my confidant. We could converse on any topic (what I miss more than anything). But this was forever. And forever is a long time. Wherever you are on your journey to forever, this issue is for you. When you get engaged, you get swamped with details. How do I pick the perfect bouquet if I don't know the names of any flowers? How much bridalwear do I have to try on before I "say yes to the dress?" Should I go with a fancy three-tiered cake or a one layer one in the center of a dessert table? Planning the perfect day is stressful and nerve-wracking. But as you read through the magazine this month, South Fulton, please remember that it's not about achieving perfection. As you read the love story of each featured couple and the tale of love that has lasted 50 years, note that the wedding is just one day. Marriage is hard work every day and nothing about life is perfect. So South Fulton brides-to be, try to relax and have a little fun on the big day! Enjoy our wedding issue and a few surprises inside.

2016 TAG-Ed, Atlanta Science Festival and How Stuff Works Middle School WEBChallenge Competition. The sixth grade students were both awarded $400 scholarships at this year’s Atlanta Science Festival for their entry about mining the Moon for Helium 3. The duo placed second overall out of over a hundred statewide entries. Their website depicted robots Eti and Ana mining Helium 3 for use in their advanced fusion reactor the team named the Revolutionary. The team was led by student advisor Ms. Kamare Pierce-Arrington founder of Pierce Academy who helped the girls with researching the project and entering the competition. The two will be further rewarded with a trip to Google in April.

The girls believe that in the future the world will need a new source of energy that does not pollute or contribute to global warming. Along with Ms. Pierce-Arrington, Kimberly and Nia discovered that a Helium 3 fusion reactor would produce very little nuclear waste if any and no air pollution or greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The problem is that Helium 3 is very rare on Earth, but plentiful on the Moon. The robots would collect the Helium 3 and use the heat from reentry to Earth to process it into usable Helium 3
for the reactor. Nia and Kimberly then built a website that included quizzes, project outlines, and 3-D animations describing the program. Kimberly enjoys mathematics and soccer. Nia enjoys tennis and science. Both girls have been close friends since preschool and attended Cliftondale Elementary School together. Ms. Pierce-Arrington taught both young ladies at Cliftondale and has been an educator for several years. She recently founded The Pierce Academy an open school supporting students in South Fulton County. The following link displays the project: AwesomeGirl348.Wix.com/FusionFuelMoonDust.
SOUTH FULTON RESIDENT EARNS PRESTIGIOUS NURSING AWARD South Atlanta resident Kedra Phillips-Flippin, RN at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center (Southeastern) is a recent recipient of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses. come from a bloodline of strong women that have cared for others so beautifully makes me strive to do more,” said Kedra. “It’s evident that being a nurse is more than treating a disease, but treating brave and amazing people on a daily basis.” The DAISY Foundation, a nonprofit based in Glen Allen, CA., was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a Hodgkins Disease survivor who passed away at the age of 33 after being admitted to the hospital for a rare auto-immune disease. Patrick’s family, who was impressed with the caliber of the nursing staff, started the DAISY Foundation to recognize amazing nurses. “Kedra embodies everything CTCA wants in a nurse,” said Roxann McIntyre, director of care management. “Her every thought and action is to best assist and help her patients. There is no task too big, no question too small for Kedra. She will go the extra mile to make
Healthcare M ARRIAGES
Y
ou have probably noticed a trend in healthcare where hospitals are buying physician practices and are adding them to their networks. These marriages are sometimes complicated and leave the patients wondering if their care will improve or get worse. They also wonder why all of this consolidation is happening. Due to changes in healthcare and the need for scale to make the delivery of care more efficient, along with constraints placed on healthcare by insurance companies, such consolidation has become necessary. If thoughtfully done, it can result in improved care and access for patients. Not too long ago, Alliance Spine and Pain Centers went through a similar marriage between two large pain practices in Metro Atlanta. Interventional Spine and Pain Management and Comprehensive Pain Management joined together to form Alliance, which is one of the largest pain management groups in the Southeast and, indeed, the nation. In doing so, they were able to utilize the combined buying power to reduce supply costs, and improve patient access to care. This is the goal of consolidation and when done correctly, the healthcare system wins. As a patient, you always have choice. If your physician or his/ her practice has been acquired by another group, be sure to ask questions to ensure that your access to your care will not change. Ensure that the new entity will continue to accept your insurance or secure a list of the plans they accept that you may consider during open enrollment. Interview your practitioner to find out why the change is happening, and make your decision from there. The success of any marriage has to do with good communication. Remember, your health is in your hands. —Gaylon Willis, MPH VP of Business Development Alliance Spine and Pain Centers
sure that her patients have everything they need and more.” CTCA at Southeastern is based in Newnan, Ga. and is one of five fully accredited cancer hospitals in the CTCA network, with other locations in Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Tulsa. CTCA provides a comprehensive, fully integrated and individualized cancer treatment experience with a commitment to patient-centered care. CONTINUED >

THE MILNERS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
R
everend Dr. and Mrs. James Allen Milner are long term residents of Southwest Atlanta. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage at a lovely event surrounded by a host of relatives and friends. The Milners, who are both natives of Atlanta, met while they were teenagers at the old “dance hall” at Mozley Park. And they have been together ever since. Today, they spend their time still dancing (on occasion), serving God and the community, enjoying family and traveling around the world. In fact their latest trip was a Valentine’s Day get away to Paris, France! When asked about the secret to their long term marriage, they often say it was a strong relationship with God and a lot of “Forgiveness.” Dr. Milner is a graduate of the Morehouse School of Religion where he received the Masters of Divinity degree. He received the Doctor of Ministry from the International Theological Center (ITC) in 2006. He is a member and past President of the Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta. His other memberships include: the SCLC, NAACP and the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda. He is also the founder and senior pastor of the Chapel of Christian Love Baptist Church located at 875 Cascade Ave, where the motto is, “Committed to Make a Difference.” The church is in the midst of celebrating its’ 40th anniversary this year. Additionally, Dr. Milner is the founder and President of Community Concerns, Inc. Since 1988, this has been an organization that provides a comprehensive, holistic approach to serving the needs of the homeless in metropolitan Atlanta. Its’ programs include: • Odyssey III-Located at 276 Decatur Street in Atlanta, this is the administrative headquarters for Community Concerns which operates as a feeder program for the housing that they offer. Meals are served there on a daily basis. 22

• Odyssey Oasis-A transitional living program designed for single adults. Through this program, affordable, single occupancy units are offered to persons transitioning from homelessness in several convenient locations in Atlanta. • Odyssey Villas-a 32 unit complex of apartments and town homes designed to serve intact families that are transitioning from homelessness. Dr. Raushannah Ask “Dr. RJ” Johnson-Verwayne Dear Dr. RJ, Summer is almost here and I made a vow to myself that I would spend more time with friends and family. There’s just one problem, I am SO busy. I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of tasks and “to-do’s” and I can’t seem to keep my head above water. I really want to be able to enjoy the people I love. What can I do?
Play. Learn. Grow.
- World’s Busiest Bee
Dear World’s Busiest Bee, Many people believe that being busy is a “good problem to have”. Don’t confuse busyness with productivity. If you are stressed, tired and overwhelmed, then you are too busy. Productivity, on the other hand, comes with feelings of excitement, energy and hopefulness. Busyness prevents us from the ability to fully engage in life and it keeps us from awareness of everyday gifts and blessings. I urge you to stop and reexamine yourself. Explore the underlying reasons for “doing too much” and then go back to your to-do list with a renewed mindset. If not, you’ll look up and realize that you have absolutely no memory of all of the good moments and small, but significant, blessings gifted to you. Best Wishes, Dr. RJ

Ian and Amanda met through an online dating site last April. On their first date at Cooks & Soldiers in West Midtown, both of them felt an instant connection and knew this was going to be the start of something big. They decided to stop by Corner Tavern for drinks and karaoke where Ian dazzled her with his amazing voice and kept Amanda laughing, with his lounge singer jazz cover of Baby Got Back. She said, "Five hours later, I knew I had found the man I would spend the rest of my life with." Amanda and Ian were married at the Log Cabin Community Church and Chailini provided music for the ceremony. The reception was held at the Pig & the Pint on Virginia Ave in College Park. Amanda gushes, "We rented out the entire restaurant as our reception venue and they made amazing apps and salads with a very chic small bite buffet set up. SWEET LOVE (CON TI N U ED)
SHAN AND GERREN: FUNNY VALENTINES
Six years before their wedding to the day, on Valentine’s Day
The Allens by Tiffany Powell Photography
in fact, Shan Marie met a man, Gerren William Allen at Shout. No, it wasn't love at first sight or a stereotypical fairy tale but it's their perfect love story. “What I love most about him is his love and dedication to me. He's loves my heart and my smile. We are a great fit because we balance each other out. I'm a planner and like to plan for the future. Gerren is more spontaneous and likes to go day by day. Our near future plans are to purchase a new home and grow our family and eventually own a family business,” said the new bride. Shan says, “Yes, I thought God was playing a trick on me but little did I know, the joke is on me because God prepared this man perfectly for me and me for him.” The couple wanted their big day to be a celebration of love and dedication that they chose to share with friends and family, symbolically taking place on the day they met, on Valentine’s Day. “I consider this day to be a dream come true. Let's celebrate!”
The Cunninghams by Adamson Photography MARLI AND IAN: UNEXPECTED PROPOSAL
Ian & Marli met, as many modern couples do: on a dating website. They met at a Mexican restaurant about two miles from where she was living, and as they were going out the door someone stopped them and asked, "When's the wedding?" They both laughed because it was only their first date. A week later, as Ian later told Marli, while driving home he thought, "I'm going to marry that girl." Six short months later, they had picked out a house together and were set to close on Valentine's Day. In preparation for that, Ian had a ring made: a six pronged Tiffany setting round diamond in white gold, but the one thing he hadn't prepared for was where to hide it. The day after purchase, Marli went to do the laundry at their apartment and found a ring box at the bottom of an empty sock drawer. Panicking, she hid the socks in the laundry room pretending to have not put them away. However, later that night, Ian finally said "I know you saw it." And he pulled the ring box from the drawer saying, "Well, I asked you to be my girlfriend in that spot. I'm going to ask you to be my wife here, too. I've known I was supposed to marry you since a week in, and so Marlissa Paige Doss, will you make me the happiest man on earth and marry me?" She of course said yes, and on November 1 of that year they became Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham. 28

TIPS FROM A WEDDING PLANNING PRO (CON TI N U ED)
A
fter the excitement of the engagement has worn off, most couples struggle with the question, “What now?”
I recommend that couples start the planning process early by discussing the guest list and budget. This is a challenging task that’s important to discuss early to ensure a smooth planning process over the next 9-12 months. More couples are paying for their own weddings these days but this is the best time to determine who is financially responsible for specific wedding tasks. If your budget allows, invest in a wedding planner. A professional wedding planner is able to tap into resources that most couples wouldn’t have access to otherwise. Your planner will create your wedding day dream team, allowing you and your fiancé to enjoy your special day. A seasoned wedding planner will carry a wealth of industry knowledge that will ease many of your many of your wedding day stresses. Make sure that you interview several planners before securing the perfect one. Do your research and ask questions such as, “Do you have experience with planning weddings of 200 guests or more? Do you have referrals that I may contact? Are you insured?” Ask the right questions, no matter how silly they may seem. Your wedding is the first event that you will plan as husband and wife. Make sure that you consider your guests in the planning process. The summer is the most common time of year for couples who desire an outdoor ceremony and reception.
Take the proper steps to ensure guest comfort. Tenting is always a great option to keep your guests nice and cool. Check into reputable tenting companies that can provide the size you need for your guest count and a proper power source for air conditioning. If a tent isn’t within your budget, look into seating your guests in the shade with chairs that are not made of metal. Adding beverage stations is also a nice touch for your guests to get relief from the summer heat. You can even have fun with it by infusing the water with fruits that coordinate with your wedding colors, served in stylish glasses. Summer beauty is always in. Adequate hydration creates the perfect natural, glow for your skin that you will want on your wedding day. LahLah Hayes, the owner of Flawless Beauty Creations recommends using mineralized pressed powders & bronzers to combat the heat and minimize shine. Many of her favorite summer products provide light coverage and contain sunscreen, while locking in moisture. Master Cosmetologist, Terri Nicole also recommends switching your winter hair up by going for a warm base color, while adding highlights and lowlights for dimension. She suggests a nice midlength cut, with long layers for enhancing the color and movement. Don’t forget about adding hair accessories that keep things light and airy. CONTINUED >

Don’t skimp on the details. Get creative by incorporating two hues of your color palette into other aspects of your wedding, like your stationary, florals, or even chairs. Keep things simple but stick with a cohesive look that won't look too busy. Stay true to your summer style and hire a professional photographer to capture the details. Kelley Raye of Kelley Raye Photography explains, "The most common mistake that
couples make is thinking they can hire a professional, quality wedding photography for an amateur’s price. If quality is important, you should take the time to save for an experienced wedding photographer that shoots in a style that speaks to you and will value your day just as much as you." Your wedding day will be magical and don’t lose sight that you and your fiancé are celebrating your love. Happy planning!

Financial Buzz Made You Look Photography
Having a Conversation about
Finances is Important for Engaged Couples
ARTICLE PROVIDED PHOTOGRAPHY BY MADE YOU LOOK PHOTOGRAPHY AND PROVIDED
J
une is a popular month for weddings. If you’re getting married next month, you no doubt have many exciting details to discuss with your spouse-to-be. But after you get back from the honeymoon, you’ll want to have another discussion — about your finances. It might not sound glamorous, but couples who quickly “get on the same page” regarding their financial situation are actually taking a step that can help them immensely as they build their lives together. As you start talking about your finances, be sure to cover these areas: • Separate or joint checking/savings accounts — Some couples create joint checking and savings accounts, others keep everything separate and still others find a middle ground — joint accounts along with smaller, separate accounts. There’s really no one “right” way for everyone, but whichever method you choose, make sure you’re both aware of where your money is, how it can be accessed, and by whom. • Debts — Both you and your spouse may be bringing in debts, such as student loans or credit cards, to the marriage. You don’t necessarily have to do everything possible to get rid of these debts immediately, but you should set up reasonable payment plans that will allow you to lower your overall debt load so you can free up money to invest for the future. • Spending and saving — Newlyweds are often surprised to discover how different they are from each other in the area of spending versus saving. You 40
South Fulton Lifestyle | May 2016
don’t have to try to radically change each other, but you both need to be aware that your spending and saving decisions now have greater consequences than when you were both single. To illustrate: If one of you is more of a spender and is used to running up big credit card bills, these actions can clearly affect both of you. To avoid problems of this type, you will need to communicate clearly with each other. • Goals — It’s important for married couples to clearly establish their financial goals. Do you want to purchase a house? If so, when? If you’re going to have children, will you want to help them pay for college? When do each of you want to retire? And what sort of retirement lifestyle do you have in mind? By answering these and other key questions, you’ll be formulating a set of goals. And from there, you can devise a strategy for attaining these goals.
• Investment styles — Both you and your spouse will unquestionably need to invest if you are going to achieve your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, each of you may have a different investment style — for example, one of you might be an aggressive investor, willing to take more risk for the possibility of greater returns, while the other is more conservative, ready to accept lower returns in exchange for greater preservation of principal. To pursue your strategy for reaching your objectives, each of you may have to compromise somewhat on your “investment personality.” To achieve this balance, you may need to consult with a financial advisor. Finances are an important part of any marriage. By communicating regularly and working together, you and your spouse can build a solid financial foundation for your lives together. Picking the P ERFEC T Flowers
for your Bridal Bouquet
ARTICLE MARLISSA CUNNINGHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
S
o you've started wedding planning and have probably ventured on to Pinterest a few hundred times and are wondering, “How do I pick my bouquet?" The first question should be: what is my budget? This is a VERY important question as many are unaware the cost of flowers. Even if it is a sliding scale or a "no more than" number, you need to have this in your mind before you start. Second, what do I want it made of? There are so many options these days: fresh flowers, realistic silk and latex flowers, dried and preserved flowers, paper flowers, brooches, fruit or veggies, succulents, you need to decide on your medium. Also, don't be afraid to mix and match different mediums for you and your bridal party to get the combination you love. Third, you need to consider your color palate. Not all flowers (if you're going with live) come in all colors, but many can be dyed or painted to achieve your desired look. Fourth, bouquets come in all shapes and sizes, and you'll need to decide what yours will be. Are you a bride who likes something small and dainty? Or would you prefer something large and over the top? Do you like a round bouquet or would you rather have flowers cascading from it? There is no right or wrong answer, but you need to have considered this to help your florist bring your dreams to life. Fifth, if using flowers, you need to know what flowers you love or dislike, and that not all flowers are created equal. Some flowers (such as a hydrangea) will take up more space and therefore be more cost effective, but they are finicky when out of water and need to stay hydrated to not start to wilt. Some flowers, like peonies, are a classic bridal flower that most brides love, but they don't grow in all seasons 42
South Fulton Lifestyle | May 2016
and can be hard to get at certain times of the year (and are also quite pricey). Flowers that are always affordable, hearty, and in season include: roses, daisies, baby's breath, alstroemerias, and carnations. Lastly, talk to a florist or floral designer. You can look online forever about the guesstimates of how much flowers cost, what arrangements may or may not be more, but the best thing to do is actually talk to a florist or floral designer. Don't be afraid to contact more than one as there may be differences in prices. Generally, a florist will have a shop where you can visit them and see things they have in stock, while a floral designer often works from their home and doesn't have a shop open to the public. However, many times that means the floral designer doesn't have the overhead of a building and needing to keep a constant supply of flowers on hand, and they only focus on weddings and events and therefore won't be working on other small projects instead of your wedding. There are advantages and disadvantages to both so don't be afraid to talk to both sides, get quotes, and most importantly find the one who you feel most comfortable with. And most importantly, HAVE FUN! You only get to plan your wedding once so enjoy it! Marlissa Cunningham is a certified floral designer and owner of MarliPaige Floral Designs, an independent floral event and wedding design studio located in Douglasville, GA. To date she has been in business for two and a half years and has done 60+ weddings and events in the greater Atlanta and North Georgia area. The Perfect Suit A LOVE STORY
WORDS SALEEMAH JACKSON PHOTOGRAPHY SARIT ROGERS
F
ifteen years ago. That’s when I met my husband. At the time, he didn’t know that I was his nor did I know that he was mine. Yet, there we were in a hot July day at a cookout in Boston. I was home for the summer, a rising sophomore at our alma mater, Tuskegee University. He had just moved to “Beantown” for his first post-college job. In the words of India.Arie, “I found myself immediately intrigued by him.” There was something so familiar and comfortable about this man I’d just met, that I knew my life would never be the same. We began dating in December of the same year, before becoming exclusive one year later. While I continued my studies, we began a long distance relationship. In spite of the skepticism of those around us and sometimes ourselves, we were able to sustain a relationship primarily by telephone and airplane. When I graduated from college, I moved back home and thus closer to my love. It was a time of transition as I was at a career crossroads, he dealt with personal tragedy and we adjusted to living in the same city. The new “us” struggled with our new selves—an unemployed college graduate and a grieving son. Our personal obstacles replaced the ease of our relationship and we found ourselves drifting apart. After months of pretending that all was well, we broke up in the summer of 2004. Finding Boston unbearable in the wake of my first heartbreak, I moved to New York with $45 dollars in my pocket and nowhere to live. I couch surfed with friends until I found a job and had enough money for an apartment. Two

months later, he moved to Atlanta with the hope that a change of scenery would be the panacea for his grief. We conveniently “lost touch” at my insistence. It was during our time apart that I realized the only way to truly get over someone is to let that person go. Yet, there was something that held us together. Even in the chaos known as the dating scene, we never found complete contentment with anyone else. There was always something missing in our subsequent relationships, which we had taken for granted in our relationship with each other. This phenomenon is soul satisfaction. Soul satisfaction occurs when you realize you are in such harmony with the person with whom you are in a relationship that even in challenging times in your relationship, there's an underlying peace; for me that peace is based in not only knowing who I am but who's I am. Soul satisfaction is the very moment you exhale because at your core you know that you have found a soul that compliments your own. My fashion savvy husband explained this occurrence best when he said, “Imagine if every man was allowed one suit in life. He may go through life wearing a jersey but, compared to a suit, it’s just a jersey. It can’t measure up to a suit. You’re my suit.” Luckily, for the both of us, he was unafraid to articulate the need for soul satisfaction.
He even had the courage to call me after almost a year of not having any contact. Imagine my surprise on the morning of my 24th birthday when I received a call from a number in the 678 area code. “Hello?” “Hello.” “ Who is this?” “Saleemah. It’s Eric.” Silence. That conversation was the first of many that eventually led to our reconciliation in July of 2005. Fortunately, we recognized the divine providence that is God’s timing before it was too late. That was my final thought in the moment before I walked down the aisle on our wedding day. After thinking of how far we had come, I took a deep breath. When I exhaled, I felt more peace than I had ever experienced in my whole life because I knew that my waiting was not in vain. My soul was satisfied in knowing that I had not been too hasty or too slow in letting life happen. If we had tried to reach our soul satisfaction before the right time, our lives would have had a different outcome. The beauty is that attaining it is out of our control as human beings. Removing a cake from the oven to soon causes it to “fall.” We must wait for the goodness of life to reach us as a baker waits for a cake to bake.
