Lifestyle Letter
How Many People Read My Letter? Now that I’ve got your attention, let me just tell you: I love the great outdoors. Actually I don’t. Unless the great outdoors involves a stocked RV that looks like a penthouse on wheels, fully equipped with satellite TV, awesome food, a hot shower with body sprays, a Big Green Egg, comfy bed… you see where I’m going here. I actually wouldn’t mind the great outdoors—camping, hunting, swimming in the lake, as long as I could come back to that fully outfitted behemoth. What I love is the great indoors. While I’m watching great Pitter Productions outdoorsy sports. LIKE FOOTBALL! Football is what Photography I live and die for. I get excited in August when pre-season rolls around, and then September: there is a God. Well, whether you’re the indoor or outdoor type, we’ve got some great things for you in this issue. AEROTROPOLIS UPDATE Community members surrounding the Airport met for the Aerotropolis Atlanta Community Forum. An aerotropolis, or “airport city” is a metropolitan subregion where the layout, infrastructure, and economy is centered on an airport that it surrounds. Aerotropolis Atlanta is a community of Fortune 500 companies, local businesses, governments, non-profits, and other interested groups located in metro Atlanta area. As the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport is a significant driver of metro Atlanta’s economy. The airport is directly responsible for 63,000 jobs and contributes $32.5 billion to the region’s economy. Monte Wilson of Jacobs Engineering, spoke on Aerotropolis Atlanta’s Blueprint update. When most people think of airport architecture, the terminal is the main thing that comes to mind. However Wilson focused the conversation on the area developing the area directly next to the terminal. Gerald McDowell then spoke on CIDs (Community Improvement Districts). Aerotropolis Atlanta has two CIDs, Airport West on the Fulton County side, which was developed in 2014, and Airport South in the Clayton County area, which was formed in 2015. As of January 1, 2016, the two CIDs decided to come together and adopt the same name,

Fulton County Schools. After travelling to Uganda, Africa, on a mission trip where hunger is visible, Veronica’s passion led her to work on the United States Hunger study that revealed a disturbing number of food insecurity issues we have right here in the United States. According to the hunger study, in Georgia 1 in 4 or 28.2 percent of children live in food insecure households. However, in America, unlike Africa, in most circumstances hunger is invisible. Land of Promise was established as a 501(c)3 in 2006, to bring awareness, inspire hope and develop programs to address food inequities nationally and internationally. In 2014, “Nourish the Need,” a food backpack program, was introduced to the Cliftondale community. The program brought awareness of food insecure children to the community and offered a viable solution. The Cliftondale community donated enough food to feed up to 50 children every weekend who were on free/reduced lunch and in need of food to eat on the weekends when school lunch was not available. The following year (August 2015 – May 2016), the Nourish the Need program expanded and began serving Fulton County School children in the Achievement Zone. The schools within this area experience high rates of mobility, poverty, crime, and a lack of intensive support for struggling students. Students, teachers and administrators have reported on the success of Nourish the Need. Their testimonies can be seen at LOPPrograms.org. Land of Promise is currently preparing for the 2016-2017 school year and developing other programs to address food insecurity in our community. Veronica believes that we are all called to service by giving back our time, talents, and resources to those in need.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN LOOKING FOR LEGAL REPRESENTATION ARTICLE REGINA MINCEY, ESQ
A
good lawyer is not hard to find if you do your homework and ask questions when you first meet. Just like the lawyer is asking you questions about your case, you should feel comfortable enough to ask him or her about their expertise. • Don’t be Afraid to Ask (“DBAA”) about the attorney’s experience and job history. You should go to the State Bar of Georgia website, which is the licensing organization for all of the state practicing attorneys. (GABar.org) Go to the Member Directory Search and type in the attorney’s name. You will see the practice or business information; bar admit date; law school attended; status of license (should be Active Member in Good Standing); Public Disciplinary History (should be None on Record); and member of specialty sections, such as Family Law or Criminal Law or others areas of the law. • DBAA for recommendations from a colleague or clients to discuss their satisfaction with the legal services rendered to them by the attorney. • DBAA if the attorney has ever had a case like yours or one with similar facts. Ask if the attorney can discuss the outcome without breaching the attorney-client privilege. Otherwise, make sure the attorney is comfortable or experienced in handling the type of case with your facts. • DBAA about all of the fees, costs and expenses required to handle your case. Ask about the maximum costs that may be required or needed and make sure that your retainer agreement or contract for legal services explains the same. • DBAA for a payment plan or arrangement if a large retainer fee is requested. Make sure that you understand the

amount necessary to hire the attorney and when he/she will begin working on your case. • DBAA about the staff or assistance needed to handle your case and whether the attorney will need to hire additional help or consult with experts and numerous witnesses to assist with your case or to conduct a trial. • DBAA whether the attorney can make a referral to another lawyer in your needed area or specialty. Ask if they have a colleague who may have more experience or a lower fee. • DBAA what ways you can help secure information or documents for the attorney and assist him/her in making a quicker evaluation of your case. Remember that full disclosure up front will allow the attorney to thoroughly evaluate your case and make informed decisions about any resolutions. If you hide information, it will come back to haunt you and harm your case. • DBAA if the attorney participates in a client referral program for future discounts on services that you may need. • DBAA and send the attorney a thank you note or write a letter of recommendation for excellent services when you are pleased with your representation. The attorney will really appreciate your kind words of gratitude.

fter missing the opportunity to make their second Super Bowl appearance by ten yards in 2012, the Atlanta Falcons have struggled to revisit that opportunity ever since. However, football analysts, avid loyalists, and the entire Falcons staff collectively believe the future will entail the franchise will “Rise Up” due to some significant player acquisitions, hopefully a stingier defense, and the motivation to enter their highly anticipated new home in 2017—the Mercedes-Benz Stadium—flaunting Super Bowl rings. The Falcons have one of the most dominant receivers in NFL history in Julio Jones, and he needs to get the ball as much as possible. However, last year’s underwhelming play of field general Matt Ryan—accredited to numerous dropped passes and ultimately the void of another potent receiving threat to limit defenses from double-teaming Jones—hindered the team last year. However, this season’s additions 16
South Fulton Lifestyle | September 2016
of former Cincinnati Bengal Mohamed Sanu and rookie Tight End Austin Hooper out of Stanford aim to provide some relief for Jones. Underrated Right Tackle Ryan Schraeder, Left Tackle Jake Matthews, and the offensive line will get some welcomed help from the solid Center Alex Mack acquired from the Cleveland
Browns as well; this protection will give Ryan extra time to find his targets and provide big holes for the shifty rising star, Running Back Devonta Freeman. The talented, yet slightly disappointing backup Running Back Tevin Coleman promises to have a better season holding on to the ball in 2016 also.
The defense, led by ball All-Pro Cornerback Desmond Trufant, will receive much-needed reinforcements thanks to numerous enhancements during the offseason. Besides developing the existing front line who raised some eyebrows last year, rookies De’Vondre Campbell out of Minnesota and LSU’s Deion Jones should upgrade the linebacker corps. Addressing help for Trufant, Defensive Back Robert Alford should build off an impressive 2015 season, and Cornerback Jalen Collins will provide an extra boost once serving a four-game suspension for violating the League’s PED policy. But perhaps the most radiant element in not only the Falcons’ bright future, but the entire Georgia capital, is the highly anticipated completion of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium adjacent to the existing Georgia Dome. Costing $1.5 billion to construct, this two-million-squarefoot arena is slated to be the most extravagant structure the South has ever seen when it opens its doors in 2017. Falcons Owner Arthur Blank, Mercedes-Benz, and the entire city of Atlanta are counting down the days of this majestic venue becoming the official home debuting their Major League Soccer team, the Atlanta United; featuring star-studded concerts; hosting major sport events including the Final Four, college bowls, and the Super Bowl; and of course, the nest of the Falcons. The seemingly endless list of jaw-dropping Mercedes-Benz Stadium amenities includes a retractable, eight-panel “camera lens-like” roof that opens in approximately eight seconds; up to a 75,000 seating capacity; 24 bars and restaurants; and an eye-popping 63,800 square-foot, 360-degree HD video “halo board” surrounding the interior which will be the largest in the world to cover every pass, kick, catch, shot and performer with crystal clarity for every attendee to enjoy. Ultimately, the Atlanta Falcons and second-year Head Coach Dan Quinn will have to fulfill the obligation of justifying their stunning new, 30-story home. With the aforementioned personnel improvements, heightened morale, and their loyal fan base keeping the faith, banners boasting "Home of NFL Champions" adorning the Mercedes-Benz Stadium walls could become a realistic housewarming.
Real Concern for
Childhood Obesity
C
hildhood obesity now affects 1 in 6 children, according to the CDC. Obesity in children may affect not only the child’s health, but predisposes them to many preventable adult health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain forms of cancer. Remarkably, once the body creates fat cells, they remain for life and can only shrink or expand in size, thereby predisposing to obesity. Many schools have reduced or eliminated recess, playtime, and physical education in their curriculum in an effort to save money. I believe that this will ultimately cost our country more as we raise more unhealthy children into adulthood, unless we as parents and a community intervene. We should make certain that our children get 60 minutes of moderate to intense exercise daily as recommended by the CDC. Moderate exercise includes activities such as a brisk walk or riding a bicycle. More vigorous activities include sports such as basketball, soccer, or hiking a steep hill. In addition to activity guidelines, we should make certain that our children are getting adequate nutrition at home and at school. Parents should eliminate fast food and processed foods and encourage fruits, vegetables, and non-fried meats. Another aspect of nutrition that is often overlooked is avoiding or minimizing sugary drinks, including many processed juices, and encouraging children to drink water. It is much easier for a child to maintain a healthy diet as an adult if it is established during childhood. As we go deeper into the school year, enter into fall and then winter, activity levels tend to decrease. We have to be intentional about helping our children find daily active opportunities, while ensuring they are making wise nutritional choices. Children look up to us, their parents, teachers, and other respected adults, so its incumbent upon us to lead by example while encouraging active and healthy lifestyles, which will yield more capable and smarter children!

"I knew at that moment Spelman was specifically made for me!" Morgan said attending Spelman was the best decision of her life. Morgan's biggest accomplishment while at Spelman has been studying abroad, obtaining several large scholarships because of her strong academic performance and becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Eta Kappa Chapter. TAI LEWIS is a sophomore at Morehouse majoring in Economic, Computer Science with a minor in Spanish. His father is a Morehouse graduate and his mother is also an alumna of Spelman. Tai tells us being a legacy means he has a standard to uphold. He said he is following in the footsteps of great men who have come before him. “I decided to go to Morehouse because I know that it is an institution that will support me in all of my endeavors, and a school that truly wants me to succeed. As a young African American, I know that Morehouse is one place of few that want to see me be successful in the world. In addition to this incredible support group that I am offered at the school, the institution provides me with the tools
and skills necessary to go into whatever field that I please,” Tai said. His biggest accomplishment his freshman year was changing his major from mechanical engineering to a double major in Economics and Computer Science with a Minor in Spanish. JAZMINE R. FREEMAN is a sophomore at Spelman College majoring in Health Sciences and minoring in Dance. Her father and mother both are Clark Atlanta University graduates. Jazmine explains she is proud to be an HBCU and AUC legacy. She says it is an honor because so many great African-American men and women have made contributions to our society and are graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities particularly the schools in the Atlanta University Center. Jazmine said, “The decision to attend Spelman was a simple one for me. I had no second thoughts. It was clear I made the right decision because of the support I receive from my Spelman sisters, professors and staff. We represent women of color from around the world and we all have a common goal in life. That goal is to be successful and empowered African-American women who truly make a difference in our community and the world.” Jazmine’s biggest accomplishment her first year was being the first Freshman ever to make and dance on the Mahogany-N-Motion Dance Team, securing a summer internship with a Physical Therapy practice and a summer dance instructor’s job for a local dance studio. WILLIAM J. TAGGART, a sophomore at CAU majoring in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, is a double legacy because both of William’s parents are Clark Atlanta University graduates. He explained, “I decided to attend CAU because the engineering program in the Atlanta University Consortium will offer me two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor’s of Physics degree and a Bachelor’s of Mechanical Engineering degree from another partner institution of my choice. Additionally, I received several scholarships to attend Clark. I worked hard in high school to do well and the hard work paid off. I visited Clark Atlanta University all of my life, from a very young age I vividly remember attending CAU’s homecoming events year after year with my parents and my sister. It simply felt like home.” William said he wanted to go to an HBCU to be around like minded people of whom he could relate for his undergraduate experience. William’s biggest accomplishment his freshman year was becoming an Orientation Guide. JULEIAN SIMS is a sophomore attending Morehouse College majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Marketing. His father attended South Carolina State and finished at West Georgia College and his brother graduated from Albany State College. He was accepted into eight schools but out of those eight he chose to attend Morehouse College. Juleian said, “I chose to attend Morehouse because of the school’s rich history and its present prestige. It is known worldwide and as a young African-American man who plans to be a successful entrepreneur the choice was cut and dry. The business program is stellar and the network afforded to me as a Man of Morehouse is invaluable. Why would I not take advantage of the opportunity to be a part of a brotherhood so strong? During a time when so many young black men are being victimized simply because of the color of their skin why would I not attend an institution where my manhood and blackness is praised instead of critiqued. Morehouse has delivered in every aspect. I am proud to be among this group of esteemed young men.

SANDY THOMAS AND THE JOE FOSS INSTITUTE
VETERANS BRING CIVICS AND PATRIOTISM BACK TO THE CLASSROOM ARTICLE ERIKKA SEARLES MITCHELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he Joe Foss Institute is all about instilling patriotic values in area youth by visiting local schools. Claude “Sandy” Thomas, local businessman and former Army officer, often accompanied by WWII veteran Hap Chandler, makes it a personal mission to teach children in our community citizenship and civics. In the military, Thomas explains, you take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. So it’s imperative that we understand just what that means and pass that understanding on to the next generation. “Despite its flaws, the United States has become in a short period of time the greatest country in the world. And it’s a place that folks from all over the world want to come to because of this concept: freedom.” Thomas goes on to say that it’s often easy when you have this freedom to take it for granted. “You must with know about it and appreciate it. Freedom is an individual thing that you must learn about and support.”
“We can’t expect them to understand patriotism if they don’t understand how they got where they are,” according to Foss. Thomas has visited over 22 schools in the last 6 years, public, private and parochial, throughout the counties in the metro area including Fulton, Fayette, and Cobb counties. “Sometimes I find myself preaching to the choir but I always get a positive response.” Thomas is a strong believer that through family, school and personal education you have the responsibility to learn about freedom. “It’s important to keep these things going.” 30

MORE ABOUT THE JOE FOSS INSTITUTE (JFI)
Named after General Joe Foss, an ace fighter pilot and Congressional Medal of Honor decorated Marine who made it his mission to instruct children on leadership, patriotism, citizenship and his own faith. After his return from WWII, he eventually became the youngest Governor of South Dakota at 39 and the commissioner of the American Football League. He helped to develop the concept of the Super Bowl. Founded in 2011, the Joe Foss Institute is active nationwide and also provides college scholarships and American flags and poster-sized copies of the founding documents for classrooms. The Civics Education Initiative is particularly crucial in a climate where subjects such as the arts and social sciences like civics have been eliminated in favor of an overwhelmingly math and science focused STEM curriculum. In many cases, American students are unable to pass the civics test that all immigrants must pass to gain citizenship in the United States. This is why the Joe Foss Institute exists, to eradicate this problem.
For more information, please visit JoeFossInstitute.org or call 1.855.JOE.FOSS (1.855.563.3677)

teers going into classrooms across the country to share their stories of service to our country as a means to educate our children on the importance of knowing our nation’s history and governance to prepare them for engaged citizenship as an adult. The Veterans not only share their story but also donate American flags, pocket constitutions and other collateral to leave behind for educators. Mr. Thomas is one of the Veterans in our area that is very active with JFI.
2
CIVICS EDUCATION INITIATIVE –
this initiative was created by JFI in response to studies done showing that students coming out of high school could not pass a basic civics test, the same citizenship test that immigrants must pass to become a citizen. JFI is now actively working with other states to get legislation passed to require high school students to pass the basic test before graduation. Arizona was the first to sign such legislation and since 8 other states have joined, but it is their goal to get all 50 states engaged by 2017.

THE ULTIMATE
MAN CAVE EXPERIENCE
ARTICLE LAKEISHA FLEMING
P
icture it.
PHOTOGRAPHY PAMELA FREEMAN
It’s an hour before game time when the guys start arriving. You kick back, shoot a few games of pool, or perhaps play a game of billiards. Then the main event. You and your crew sit back in style, ice cold drinks in hand, food a heartbeat away. From your control center, you turn on the game, adjust the surround-sound audio, and experience the game as if you are one of the players on the field. This is comfort. This is luxury. This is your man cave. “A man cave is any interior space that reflects the likes of the man of the house. He can have his own space to cater to his needs, or do as he pleases in this space,” states Pamela Freeman, Principle/ Designer, Masterpiece Designs. It’s more than just a place to call your own; it’s a place that reflects your personality, and offers a feeling of escape into your own world. The great thing about creating this world is there are no definitive rules. First, you want to find a space in the house that appeals to you. Maybe the basement? Rec room? Loft? "Look with an open mind," notes Pamela. Don’t put yourself in a box. “Any place can be a man cave. Even a garage may be the ultimate man cave for the avid car collector,” she says. Once your area has captured your eye, it’s time to set the atmosphere. Find the focal point of the space. Check out that ‘60s jukebox that helps you travel back in time or spark up nostalgia by paying homage to an ‘80s video arcade. Eclectic paintings, or a rare coin collection can appeal to the artistic connoisseur. An authentic movie house popcorn machine can be an excellent conversation piece. Perhaps a shrine of sorts to your hometown football team, complete with players’ jerseys, team pictures and other memorabilia, creates the tone you are looking for. Even the sleekest, sexiest, modern technology can keep you engrossed for hours. Next it’s time to make this room feel like home. "Comfortable seating, great color on the walls, a place to keep beverages like a refrigerator or a kegerator, and TV for the sports enthusiast are all must haves," Pamela mentions. That seating could mean a luxury leather reclining
32
South Fulton Lifestyle | September 2016
massage chair, or custom home theater seats. Wall color can include bold splashes or muted earth tones. Instead of ice, you may prefer to chill your drinks without watering them down with an ice ball maker. And while you may not be able to get a hold of a custom 370-inch custom-made TV (yes, it exists), you can surely achieve your own slice of HD visual heaven. Gauge your preferences by visiting high-end electronics stores. Take in a car show to view some classic vehicles that could adorn your space. And spend hours perusing unique combinations of gaming tables that double as dining areas. The possibilities are infinite. After you’ve nailed down preferences, taken appropriate measurements and envisioned the final product, it’s time to put it all together. Whether you call on a contractor or embark upon the adventure yourself, the outcome is sure to be satisfying. Rewarding. And yours. Enjoy your ultimate man cave experience.

MORENIKE IBIDAPO 2016 WESTLAKE VALEDICTORIAN ATTENDING VANDERBILT THIS FALL ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
orenike Ibidapo was born and raised in South Fulton county to parents Michael and Wanda Ibidapo and she is the third of four children. Morenike attended local public schools Stonewall Tell Elementary and Sandtown Middle School before joining the Lion family at Westlake High School. From a young age, Morenike was interested in a variety of diverse activities like learning piano and violin, and playing soccer and softball. As Morenike became a young adult, she decided to hone in on one instrument and sport: violin and volleyball. With a natural talent for music, Morenike became a leader in her orchestra as a first violinist and a section leader. She played with the Westlake Orchestra all four years of high school, performing in both school concerts and events around the city. Morenike was also honored to perform three times at Music in the Park with Grammyaward winning saxophonist Kebbi Williams. In addition to music, Morenike was the Westlake Student Government Association president of the 2015-2016 school year. Under her lead, Westlake SGA was able to do amazing community service projects like Project Greatness, where students used fresh food to make sack lunches for the Atlanta homeless, and the March Water Drive, where the Westlake community collected over 150 cases and gallon jugs of water for those in need. Morenike plans to continue her service in college by participating in the student government at Vanderbilt University, where she will be attending in the fall of 2016. Morenike’s academic interests vary across the board, ranging from coordinate geometry to English literature. This year, her favorite course was advanced placement single-variable calculus. Morenike is planning on majoring in neuroscience at Vanderbilt this fall, but will keep an open mind when selecting courses. In her free time, Morenike likes to watch reruns of dramatic series, listen to alternative R&B and soul music, and dabble in hair and makeup. Morenike is a proud example of the shining excellence that comes from South Fulton.
