HEY Y'ALL, Every year when May makes its welcomed return to our calendars, we can’t help but sing the line from The Temptations’ “My Girl” that goes, “When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May.” This month brings with it an abundance of joy—bright blue skies, a rainbow of flowers and, of course, the celebration of mothers on May 12. In this issue, we not only celebrate mothers but we also highlight all the wonderful women in our community. The following pages are filled with stories to inspire us all to appreciate the women in our lives and to strengthen the connection we have with our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. This month enjoy some Fabulous Women of Faith, Dr.

AVERY*SUNSHINE STARTED ON THE ROAD TO STARDOM AT A YOUNG AGE SIMPLY BY DOING WHAT SHE LOVED. She began playing piano at 8 years old and played for different denominations at church as a teenager, as well as directing choir and singing. When it came time to choose a major in college, the decision was obvious: piano. A self-described introvert/extrovert, Avery*Sunshine loves people and lives her life to the fullest. “I am happy. I am a mommy; I am a wife. I love music, I love cooking for my family, and I love making music that I believe will move people,” said Avery*Sunshine, who credits her success to happenstance and reveals that she is not naturally creative. “For me, the moon has to be in the seventh house and everything has to be aligned properly until I get into my groove,” laughed Avery*Sunshine. Never thinking she could really be an artist, she continued to go with the flow. “I never thought about creating music as a job; it was something I did to get albums done,” said Avery*Sunshine. Her husband is both helpful and encouraging in the process. “Everything inspires me, like my children, and even being uninspired,” said Avery*Sunshine. She recalled driving on her first tour up and down the East Coast in a hatchback with her husband, playing guitar in the passenger seat and they created something. Anything can spark inspiration for them, even cooking dinner or reading. Avery*Sunshine considers her songs to be soul music. “What stands out is being invited twice by Aretha Franklin for her

birthday party and Christmas party and being given a check in my birth name, Denise White,” said Avery*Sunshine. She also spoke of doing a small tour in the UK with BB King, honoring Smoky Robinson and being nominated for a Soul Train Award in Los Angeles as highlights of her career. She repeatedly reiterated that she never thought she would be doing this. “The thing that helped me is knowing good things come to those who wait, but great things come to those who hustle, so that is my advice,” said Avery*Sunshine. Avery*Sunshine decided what she wanted and went for it, following her family’s example.

“My mother was an entrepreneur working a couple of jobs, like Scott Paper Company and her own beauty salon and beauty and barber supply business, and she took care of the family,” said Avery*Sunshine. Having watched her mother do everything, Avery*Sunshine was inspired to do the same. “I saw her tireless effort to make sure that I had everything and that I was being set up for success,” said Avery*Sunshine. Her mother is now 82 years old and tries to make it to every show in both the audience and on the stage. She is thrilled by Avery*Sunshine’s achievements and expects even more in the future. “There will definitely be more touring, more collaborations and I look forward to being done with my fourth album,” said Avery*Sunshine, who says she stays in touch with her fans via Facebook and Instagram, where they can follow her and see what she has been doing. Readers can expect to see more of her. “I moved to Atlanta almost 30 years ago, so I call myself the ‘East Coach Peach’,” said Avery*Sunshine. She has been in the community for so long that her whole family has moved here, and it is safe to say that she is here to stay! 16

LEADING THE WAY FROM THE HILLSIDE

18

South Fulton Lifestyle | May 2019

AT THE GOLDEN AGE OF 89, BISHOP DR. Barbara L. King has seen a lot in her lifetime. The founder, minister and spiritual leader of Atlanta’s Hillside International Truth Center has received numerous awards and honors for her ministry throughout the decades, including being named as the first female chief of the Ashante tribe in Ghana, West Africa. She has traveled and spoken around the world during her professional career, which also includes time as a social worker and dean of education. In addition to serving as an ordained minister, King is a widely acclaimed author, former television host and consultant to heads of state, including former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Even while King thrived in her professional career over the years, her involvement in the church has always remained constant. King was called to the ministry at the tender age of 13. “I just had divine guidance in me that said I was to be a minister. I just knew in my heart that’s what I was supposed to do,” said King. King grew up in the Baptist church and was raised by her grandmother who taught Sunday School. She was very active in her church, Dr. Barbara Receives the Light of the World Award

serving as an usher, singing in the choir and getting baptized at age 6. However, when Bishop King told her pastor at the time about her calling, his response was that women were not allowed to minister in the Baptist church. She did not let that stop her and preached her first sermon at the age of 15 at a Women’s Day service at Antioch Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. A proud graduate of two Historically Black Colleges and Universities, King earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Texas Southern University and a master’s degree in Social Work from Clark Atlanta University. She also obtained a doctorate degree in Ministry from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. Her career as a minister at Hillside began when she started a Bible study group with 12 members. That group eventually grew into what is known today as Hillside Chapel and Truth Center, a non-denominational church serving thousands of members and supporters worldwide. The mission of Hillside centers on a commitment to new thinking for healing hearts and transforming lives as demonstrated by Jesus Christ. We believe that everything and every person in the Bible relates to us consciously. What we are forgetting about Jesus is his principles. We praise him as the son of God and death on the cross…but everything he taught can be applied today. Life is consciousness and what he was teaching is how we can live and that’s what we’re about. All faiths are welcomed at Hillside. “We don’t condemn anybody for their belief,” King said. “We should be all teaching love and forgiveness.” King’s latest recognition was having an interfaith chapel at the world’s business airport named after her by a unanimous vote by Atlanta’s City Council. The chapel at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is located in the Atrium. This latest honor confirms to King that her career path has been worthwhile. It’s like my soul and my heart opened up and I was able to say, ‘You have done something’. May 2019 | South Fulton Lifestyle

Is Regenerative Medicine Right for You? By Pickens A. Patterson III, MD lliance Spine and Pain Centers (ASPC), including the Camp Creek location, is proud to offer regenerative medicine techniques for the treatment of chronic hip, knee, back and neck pain. Regenerative techniques have historically been used when other forms of more conservative treatment are unsuccessful, however with the emergence of new techniques and protocols, it is now becoming a first line of treatment. Regenerative medicine is an emerging field focusing on using cells and substances from your own body to heal damaged tissues. It encompasses the now common term “stem cell.” Stem cells are usually derived from a patient’s bone marrow or fat cells, and use the healing substances found within those cells to regenerate damaged tissues. For example, when stem cells are injected into a severely painful, cartilage-damaged knee, regeneration can occur of some of the damaged tissues leading to pain relief and improved function. Another common regenerative medicine technique is the injection of plasma rich protein (PRP). This involves removing a patient’s blood, and then removing and concentrating the plasma that naturally includes powerful healing and anti-inflammatory factors. The PRP is then injected into the affected area and stimulates healing, diminishing pain and improving function. There are other regenerative techniques including, but not limited to, liposomes and A2M, which any of the doctors at Alliance Spine and Pain would be happy to discuss with you. It is important that you research and trust your doctor before undergoing any regenerative medicine technique, especially since this is currently a non-insurance covered option (ASPC has financing options to fit your budget). As a new field, ensure you and your doctor have realistic expectations and that your treatments are FDA compliant and from a reliable source. The best way to do this is to find a board-certified pain specialist with training in regenerative medicine, and to establish a patient doctor relationship rather than responding to an add promising a miracle with “stem cells.”

CHANGE TO THE SAME EAST POINT COMMUNITY SHE GREW UP IN. While at University of California, Berkeley, she felt underprepared for college coursework. After graduation, she returned home to work at the Future Foundation for youth started by her brother Shareef Abdur-Rahim, notable NBA All-Star and NBA G League President. Nineteen years ago, she stepped into the CEO role. “Faith has played a major part in my life,” she said. “I think all of my life decisions have been shaped by faith. This is a spiritual job. I think God has told me in so many ways, ‘this is your purpose.’ I'm paying attention to what God is saying to me.” Consequently, the Future Foundation equips South Fulton’s most vulnerable youth and their families with the necessary skills and resources to beat the odds and rise up out of poverty. A dedicated teen center and access to experts are examples of what is offered around the five pillars of life skills, family, relationships, and health and academics. And a data-driven approach solidifies an ecosystem of business, nonprofit and government partners that come together to create a “second family” for foundation participants and alumni. Their major fundraiser, the “Keep It 100%” Luncheon, recognizes not only these advocates, but also the number of seniors who have graduated high school over the past 12 years. “I grew up here in South Fulton and sometimes it breaks my heart to see where some of our kids are and the challenges that they face,” she said. “Volunteer! It doesn’t have to be at Future Foundation. But if more people volunteered and got involved in a child’s life that really needs it, I do think that support can really help change what’s happening in our community.”

IF INGREDIENTS WERE THE ONLY STANDARD USED TO DETERMINE CALORIC VALUES IN ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, GIN WOULD WIN HANDS DOWN. Created with botanicals, spices and citrus rind, these flavors come to life and add complexity to your cocktail. But who can turn down the satisfying taste of a frozen strawberry margarita made from scratch? Sweet, salty, fruity and perfect. Just another good reason to keep limes on the ready and plant a small patch of strawberries, at least that’s my excuse. TIP: Store your tequila in the freezer to prevent the alcohol from melting your cocktails. In essence, balance is the key. There is nothing worse than a drink that is too sweet or too sour... right? A good mixologist understands how important balance is. No award-winning chef would try to create a great meal without having knowledge of fruits, veggies, spices, or meats; so it is with the mixologist. A perfectly balanced cocktail will please almost everyone, and for those

I think we are painting an accurate picture that there is really no

such thing as a “skinny cocktail. The cocktail world inundates our taste buds with layers of flavors using infused syrups, candies, chocolate, creams and steam, all aesthetically appealing and prepared to perfection by Mr. or Miss Bartender/Mixologist. But there is hope--gluten-free beer is available!

TECH SAVVY

$100 Rebate Helps GreyStone Power Members Be Smart PEOPLE SERVED BY GREYSTONE POWER CAN ENJOY REBATES ON ENERGY-EFFICIENT PRODUCTS TO HELP THEM MANAGE COSTS. That’s because as a not-for-profit cooperative, GreyStone works with members to save energy and money. Their newest service offers GreyStone Power members who own their homes a $100 rebate to purchase and install an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat. Smart thermostat technology enables users to control their home’s temperature remotely from a Smartphone, tablet or desktop computer using the home’s Wi-Fi connection. This ability gives homeowners greater control and convenience, allowing them to adjust their home’s temperature from anywhere. GreyStone members Cecil and Jeanette Perkins installed ENERGY STAR smart thermostats in their multi-level home. The couple, whose home uses both gas and electric, has saved an average of $50 per month on their power bills and around $50 per month on winter gas bills. Results and savings vary for members based on many factors, including electricity use and habits, size and efficiency of the home. “A smart thermostat is cost-effective, convenient and easy to use,” says Jeanette Perkins, noting that before installing the smart thermostat, regulating the temperature in different areas of the home, especially the master bedroom, was difficult. Now, a sensor installed in the bedroom assists the thermostat in accommodating the temperature to the Perkins’ preference. “We also love that with just the push of a button, we can set our thermostat from wherever we are in the house or adjust the temperature when we’re away from home,” she adds. Once a GreyStone member has purchased and installed the ENERGY STAR smart thermostat, requesting a rebate is easy. The member simply completes the smart thermostat form found online at greystonepower.com/rebates. An inspection for verification of the thermostat is scheduled once the form is received, to be completed within 90 days of purchase/installation.

GreyStone members can learn more and find the full list of requirement details at greystonepower.com/rebates. Note: Qualifying thermostats can be found at www.energystar.gov. GreyStone Power states that proper installation, operating and performance of smart thermostats are the sole responsibility of the member. GreyStone Power member, Jeanette Perkins, has one platinum and three gold albums from her 70s recording days. As Jeanette Washington, she was one of the first female members of Parliament Funkadelic in 1975 and later performed with the all female funk band Parlet. 26

CITY SCENE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND A FOCUS ON SOUTH FULTON’S IMAGE AS A QUALITY, SAFE PLACE TO LIVE WERE AMONG THE TOPICS POLITICAL LEADERS, INCLUDING MAYOR BILL EDWARDS, ADDRESSED AT COMMUNITY FORUM AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL. The March 2 event—hosted by the Atlanta Suburban and East Point/College Park alumnae chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the South Fulton chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—brought together more than 150 citizens from the various cities that comprise South Fulton. Councilwomen Catherine Foster-Rowell (District 1), Carmalitha Gumbs (District 2), Helen Z. Willis (District 3) and Councilman Mark Baker (District 7) joined Edwards in answering poignant questions from an audience that wants a better South Fulton. Edwards noted a $109-million budget that will help produce park improvements, a small business incubator, 38 new police officers and 15 new firefighters, among other usages. An economic development director has

been hired as well. He warned that the growth of South Fulton depends on the perception of it from those on the outside looking in. “Economic development works hand-in-hand with public safety,” Edwards said. “If you don’t feel safe in your heart, you’re not going to invest there. It’s not just about crime being down (3%). It’s about how you feel. No one wants to come where they do not feel safe or where their child cannot get a quality education.” Gumbs warned that citizens posting incidents on social media about South Fulton “do a disservice to the community. . . We need to control the perception of our identity, and posting (negative) stuff only hurts and lumps us in with violent cities.” The organizations plan to host another community forum in the coming months.
