Editor’s Letter

Celebrating the Renaissance Man T

heologian and professor Dr. Robert Franklin is cited as saying that a leader should possess the qualities that he describes as “The Five Wells.” When he said that a man should be Well-Read, Well-Spoken, Well-Travelled, Well-Dressed and Well-Balanced, he must have had the South Fulton lifestyle in mind. The gentleman who resides or works in South Fulton is all of these things. Or perhaps he is striving toward one of these goals. He is a good steward of his hardearned money, but will spend a little more on something that he deems to be of high quality. Despite what others might lead you believe, he is a family man, ferociously protective of his wife and progeny. Quality time is important to him and he knows that the time he spends with his children is time well spent. There are great examples of fatherhood in this community, and it is our pleasure to spotlight these men. In this issue, there is something for everyone. To expand the lives of the Well-Spoken, there is segment on a motivational speaker’s new book and radio show; to entice the Well-Dressed, a superb feature on men’s fashion; and a calendar full of events to enjoy with your sweetheart or family members to invigorate the Well-Balanced. And as you peruse the magazine, the Well-Read will be fulfilled. You will find tips that will help you edify your mind, body and soul. And as always, we are pleased to highlight businesses, families and students in our community. Happy June and here’s to the South Fulton Renaissance men and those who love them.

She has traveled the world learning about all hair types, and she now has the forum for bringing that experience to the residents of South Fulton County. She truly creates a total experience. I was greeted at the door with smiling faces, and led to the clean and warm waiting area. The staff offered me water and tea, and get this: COOKIES! You had me at hello. And don't even get me started on the shampoo. I got a massage on my head that made me truly confirm there is a God! Wow. The stylist gave me a consult of my hair, and told me what she was doing and why every step of the way. And, she made my hair smell like chocolate. Chocolate. I wanted to eat my hair. Evonya Easley is a stylist, fashion consultant and personal concierge, located right here in South Fulton. Although she has styled some of the biggest names, she's available to us old regular folk, too. Love E, as she calls herself, gave me an image consult. She assessed my closet, made suggestions for easy closet organization, and suggested what my best looks are. She also paired some outfits for me, and even started rehanging my clothes as she was talking. She's professional: arrived early, dressed to the "T" and was respectful of my time. I loved her candor, as she wasn't afraid to say, "That's gotta go!" It was all in Love (E), and now I'm on my way to a closet full of wooden hangers only, and nothing in my closet but clothes, shoes, accessories and handbags. And GUYS, guess what? She does personal shopping, too. Not sure what to get that special girl? Call Love E! Not only will she get the perfect gift, she'll wrap it and have it delivered flawlessly without blinking an eye. Don't worry, she'll let you know what it is, so you won't both be surprised. Easley also styles men and women and more about her services can be found at LoveEFashion.com. Congrats, Love E. igh school senior Karriem Grogan is a member of the third class to graduate from Hapeville Charter Career Academy. He is the first student at the school to receive the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship, which covers both undergraduate and graduate tuition. He is a member of the track team and an avid writer. Grogan writes, “I am eternally grateful to those that have given me these four attributes: training, discipline, inspiration and drive. I cannot place my heap of success solely to natural talent or time spent in a classroom, rather I must stack appreciation onto others. It is my deepest desire to show gratitude to all those that have ventured through life’s obstacle courses with me; they are the ones that have created and sustained my ambition, zealousness and perseverance. One is Jehovah God himself, second is my beautiful mother, coming in third are my grandparents, and in recent events Bill and Melinda Gates. Recently being bestowed the honor of being the first Gates Millennium Scholar at Hapeville Charter Career Academy can be likening to a steam train. The more coal you put in the furnace the better the drive. The scholarship has given me a greater driving force and has me on the fast track, charging towards opportunities that were unimaginable for me. I cannot be anything but eternally grateful.”

or someone who is claustrophobic, getting an MRI can be a difficult experience. Atlanta Medical Center- South is helping some patients breathe easier as they undergo the MRI process by offering new technology. The hospital is the first in Georgia to offer the widest MRI scanner available, the Hitachi Echelon Oval 1.5T MR system. It features an oval shape designed around the human body. It is targeted to patients who are broad-shouldered, obese, claustrophobic or anxious. Along with the scanner, the hospital is the first in Georgia to offer Sentient Suites, which projects scenery and sounds onto the walls and ceiling during an MRI, to help ease a patient’s anxiety. With the tap of a tablet, patients can choose such scenes as: marine life, rainforest, Pacific sunset, mountains, rivers or a day at the zoo. Patients can also enter the machine feet first, rather than head first, which can help ease anxiety. The Echelon Oval combines patient comfort with powerful technology and an ultra fast workstation to make patient exams as quick and smooth as possible. Its imaging power is further boosted by an array of anatomically specific, optimized receiver coils that allow advanced imaging techniques currently available in the healthcare industry. 14

South Fulton Lifestyle | June 2015

“We are aware that MRI testing can sometimes be stressful,” says Anthony Davis, director of Imaging Services at Atlanta Medical Center – South. “That’s why we are offering not only a wider MRI, but soothing nature scenes, music and sounds. This should be a much more pleasant experience for our patients.” Atlanta Medical Center – South is located at 1170 Cleveland Ave., East Point, GA 30344. For more information or to make an appointment for an MRI, call 404.265.3828. Founded in 1901, Atlanta Medical Center is a 762-bed acute care hospital, with campuses in downtown Atlanta and East Point. It is the second largest licensed-bed hospital in Georgia. A teaching hospital, Atlanta Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center and Advanced Primary Stroke Center, earning numerous national awards for its treatment of stroke. It is widely recognized for its women’s services program, including water births, and the hospital’s weight-loss program is designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Atlanta Medical Center is the Official Healthcare Partner of Georgia Tech Athletics and provides sports medicine coverage to Atlanta Public Schools student athletes. METCODE: BREAKING THE MAN CODE OF FASHION ARTICLE MYAH CLEMONS | PHOTOGRAPHY CORNELIUS SMITH

16

South Fulton Lifestyle | June 2015

T

here was a time when it was easy to judge a person’s profession or level of success by their attire, not these days. There has been a significant shift in men’s fashion. Long gone are the days of men dressing in full suits for work and children getting washed up for dinner. The workingman transitioned from two-piece suits with a tie until the 70’s flash ushered in the butterfly collar. Today, casual Friday is casual everyday. The millennial man is an entrepreneur sporting a full arm tattoo and yesterday’s grungy t-shirt. This normcore trend is acceptable for the basement techy or Starbucks barista, but the self-employed phenomenon has made this generation lazy dressers. However, there are still men that aspire to dress well and this is why MetCode was founded. The company’s mission is plainly states, “Creating better dressed men daily.” This means that they strive get men out of the same pair of sweats their kids wear. MetCode is the Netflix of men’s accessories. They provide accessories

rentals t0 members for a monthly fee. The process is simple. First, become a member and purchase a monthly service for as low as $20 per month and in 3-5 business days the items selected from their list of goods are in the mailbox. Also, similar to Netflix, there is no due date on the rental without late fees or penalties. Hawkins stated, “We do suggest that if our members are interest in the items for purchase we offer a deep discount. What makes this brand innovative is their insight into the needs of the male buyer. MetCode has managed to streamline the shopping process down to a few clicks. This means more time for watching sports or a round of golf. Men are the same as they were years ago, only now the pace of lifestyle is ten times faster. There is no longer time to iron, shave, text, and update Instagram in the thirty-minute window before rush hour. Most will settle for khakis and a polo shirt. The average employed man is constantly on the go with little time to be concerned with lapels and pocket squares. A membership with MetCode will give the average man a distinguished gentlemen’s upgrade. Their influence has the capability of catapulting a demographic of the new age gentleman. MetCode is the future to cracking the code of the needs of today’s stylish man. Their mission to build a better-dressed male community might possibly create a spark in men willing to forgo the bad habit of resorting to t-shirts and jeans. Donald Hawkins, one the co-founders of MetCode, was asked about any upcoming chang-

es in the company and he revealed a new division rolling this August, MetCode Black; a tailoring service where members can purchase a custom-fit suit for less than $400.00. This includes an in-home tailoring service, handpicked fabric selection, and free shipping. Initially, this service will be exclusive to Georgia. This is huge for the South. Fashion in the Bible belt is often misunderstood, but a fleet of snazzy men cannot be dismissed. The year of the gentleman has arrived. Myah Clemons is the editor and stylist for fashion and lifestyle blog, Seaux Southern. She is originally from Brooklyn, New York, but Georgia has been her home since a teenager. She currently resides in Atlanta with her husband. For more fashion trends and updates, visit www.seauxsouthern.com.She can be found on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter at SeauxSouthern. THREE EASY STEPS TO A HEALTHIER YOU

ARTICLE COACH JAMAL POWERS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

here’s nothing like the smell of weathered leather, rubber mats and that odd mix of cologne and sweat that usually fills up the gym on any given day. While some may disagree, my love affair with the gym is only enhanced by the usual activity that most people fear. Why is it that so many of us shy away from heart healthy activity that will only keep us fit, trim and ready for a long life, hopefully free of diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a litany of other ailments? I’m a father of a two-year-old boy, and soon to be father of two small children. It’s imperative that I set an example for my son about the importance of an active lifestyle. Coaching basketball and training clients are not enough; I make it a point to show my son and my young athletes the importance by prioritizing it in my own life by staying active. And, I keep a positive attitude about physical fitness and exercise. The prevalence of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes is far too high, specifically in the black male community. I challenge all men out there that are not already in an exercise regimen to dedicate at least one day a week for 30 minutes of some sort of physical activity. Better yet, bring a friend or if you have a young child, bring them, too. Here’s my recommendation for the week: • Challenge yourself this week to limit soda intake and processed carbs (chips, bread, desserts, etc.) • Pick one day for a 30-minute walk or jog with a family member or friend • Pick one of the following exercises: 3 sets of 20 pushups, 30 situps, 40 squats or a 20 minute sprint/jog Then start it all over again next week. That’s all for now. Time to hit the gym!

Visit our website TotalFitnessRevolution.com for more tips and workout routines or come see Coach Rashad McDade for a personal training consultation at the gym. 18

All I Do is Win, or Do I? BECOMING A TRUE GAME CHANGER BY EMBRACING YOUR FAILURES ARTICLE CHRIS COOPER PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLES FORDE OF FORDEFOTOG

A

s a lifestyle and procrastination expert, I help professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders, students and everyone in between stop procrastinating, stop quitting and start succeeding in business and in life. And over the course of my travels and my work, there are a couple of things that I’ve learned that are essential for success. Understanding that failure is often the name of the game that you have to play to win, here are some key steps into becoming a True Game Changer: 1. Re-program - Yes, we must reprogram our minds. Our great Creator wired us for success but society has programmed us to fail. I was always taught that leaders are readers and it may seem cliche but it's true, If you want to be a financial guru, make sure you study wealth, identify mentors and invest in yourself. Re-program your mind with success principles, positive affirmations, instructional teachings, etc. so that you can truly understand the wealth game (or whatever other kind of a game you choose) and master it. My recommendation is to spend 30 minutes daily to focus on these transformative teachings. 2. Just Pick Three - I know that we have laundry lists of things to do in our lives every day. It's important to prioritize three buckets of items and systematically work through them so that you achieve results. I lump them into 3 categories: Will Do, Should Do and May Do. To be a game changer, I emphatically recommend that you attack three and only three of the Will Do’s Daily. These are your MVP’s: Most Valuable Priorities.

3. Measure and Assess- After you understand the game, re-program your mind, and tackle your MVP’s, you have to measure and track key behaviors that are working and those that are not working. I know this sounds simple. But Oprah, Michael Jordan, Colonel Sanders and Norman Vincent Peale not only understood the power of failure and success along with these game changing principles, they also knew that consistency and accountability were essential for the creation of momentum in their lives. These icons found coaches and mentors to guide them along the way. So here’s my coaching advice for you today: Change is not an event, it's a process, and if you want to be a game changer, you must give yourself the time and tools to change. Chris Cooper is the president/CEO of Execute Your Passion, LLC, an Atlanta-based professional services firm specializing in motivational seminars and leadership and professional development training and services. amily Members: Rod, Keisha, Preston and Pria Echols of Fairburn We have been tested as a family in several ways since Rod and I were married in April 2007, and have come out on the other side stronger than ever! We have experienced life-changing events literally every year since we were married, including Rod being diagnosed with Stage IV Colorectal cancer when Preston was 3 years old and Pria was only 1 year old. He is now cancer-free and we are back on track with our personal, spiritual and family goals. We are excited about all that God has for us. Our cancer journey inspired us to help others during their journey and as a result, the Team Echols Foundation was born. The Team Echols Foundation, Inc. was formed as a way to help educate others about the importance of early detection, encourage those affected by any type of cancer, and inspire others by sharing their family’s story. Following his colonoscopy, we learned through Rod’s diagnosis how important early detection is for any form of cancer. The number one symptom of colon cancer is no symptom at all. Team Echols uses foundation funds to meet the needs of cancer patients and their families on a monthly basis. our cancer journey was shared in a national commercial by Cancer Treatment Centers of America, which has prompted greetings and hugs from strangers who say they were positively impacted by our story.

Parting Thoughts

Fatherhood HIS STORY, HIS FUTURE WORDS SALEEMAH JACKSON

B

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CORNELIUS SMITH

eing a father to one’s offspring is something that some men may have to figure out on their own, or something they may have seen first hand. But, fathers who are consistently present and forming quality relationships with their children do exist as they always have. How to change the public perception then becomes the challenge for African-American fathers. Though they shouldn't have to, for the world to change, one must first start at the microcosmic level. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It starts in each household where boys are encouraged and empowered by their families, and the community of adults in their lives who remind them of their greatness as often as possible. The narrative about fatherhood in the African-American community fails to tell the whole story. The flawed tale told where black men are father to many different children with many different women, and the stories of young women taking pride in relevance gained through whomever they share children with... these pictures fall short. There is more. These portrayals don't tell the story of the young father on Campbellton Road I see walking his son to daycare every morning, rain or shine. With his dreadlocks and sagging pants, he is there, fathering and being a consistent force in his son’s life. The stories must be shared of the dad who takes his children to ballet and art class every Saturday. And, the city councilman walking the streets of Baltimore to keep the peace in the community he represents and lives in with his own children. And, the father who works three jobs to provide for his family, yet still makes time to attend his daughter’s swim meet. And the dad who travels for work but calls and Skypes everyday to stay connected to his kids from afar. I am reminded of this as I see my own son who is now three years old. As I watch him put on his daily outfit that he chooses to wear—

swim trunks, a hoodie and crocs--I realize how precious this time is. He has yet to realize how wearing a hoodie affected a young man born on his same birthday 17 years before him. Or of the historic tensions between law enforcement and men of his ethnicity. My son only knows that he wants to play soccer like his hero, Neymar, who by coincidence was also born on his birthday and that munchkins from Dunkin Donuts are the best culinary invention ever. Each day, my husband and I pray over him and speak a blessing to let him know of the greatness that lies within. Every day, when his sisters are at school and Daddy’s at work, I hug him and let him know I love him, everything about him so that he may grow up with a sense of purpose and acceptance unrivaled by the challenges I know lie ahead. I repeat these positive affirmations because I choose to believe that as boys grow up with the acceptance and validation that each of us need, they have less reason to prove it elsewhere. While it is true that where the adults in our society fail our children--and we see them seek the acceptance and validation by acting out--it is also true that changing how a person views himself isn’t impossible. As Frederick Douglass once said “It is easier to build strong children than repair broken men.” Watching the fathers of the Metro Atlanta area, the fathers in Baltimore, in Ferguson, New York City, Cleveland and around the country, I see those strong children who have grown up and are now the strong men that will change the perception of African-American fathers and tell the whole story in the process.
