Editor’s Letter
Hello, South Fulton! Tiffany Powell Photography
I
have a confession to make. I feel the need for speed. In a past life, I'm sure I was a race car driver. One day, when my child goes off to college, I'm totally getting a Harley Davidson to quench my thirst for the open road. When I had the chance to take a spin on the test track at the Porsche Experience, I was elated. The ride was a high like no other. My heart raced as I sat in the car and mentally checked off my bucket list, feeling the gravitational pull of riding at extremely high speeds. I thought to myself, "Now, this is living. This is truly what life is all about."
Go to a beer tasting at Urban Foodie Cafe or volunteer at your local school. Pursue you passion. Do whatever it is that truly makes you feel alive!

PEACH STATE GAMERZ
I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a gamer, except for the times I spent much of my 9th grade year trying to rescue the princess in Super Mario Brothers (which I did, by the way). Or, unless I get to play and dance along South Fulton’s most rockin’ game truck. Yeah, baby! If you have never seen or even heard of the game truck concept, then let me explain it to you. Take a huge trailer. On one side, add monster TVs that you access from the outside. Inside, add more TVs and 20+ seats for playing the most relevant and up-to-date video games around. The best part: it comes to your door. These guys have got this system down: you reserve online, pay online, get timely confirmation emails with invites, and they show up BEFORE your party time, ready for your gamers. PRO TIP: Football fans, ask about the NFL Experience. Congrats, Peachstate Gamerz! You’re a Pick! Find them online at PeachStateGamerz.com. KAFENIO
College Park goes Greek! Or at least Greek food, with the newest addition, Kafenio. Kafenio means café in Greek and owner Johnny G’s recipe for awesomeness is chock full of the best ingredients. The spanakopita is full of fresh spinach and feta, with a perfect hint of dill. The salads and wraps are traditional, yet original and flavorful. I must give mention to the drink selection; it’s vast, from coffee all the way to wine. My kind of place. PRO TIP: Order the lamb burger. I fed this to my 8 year old and 6 year old, and they ate it up. Pun intended. I didn’t know I could love lamb so much. No, it doesn’t taste like chicken. It tastes like good. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything off the menu. Trust me, I’m working my way down the whole thing. Congrats, Kafenio! You’re a Pick! Find them at Kafenio3387.com. 8

Around Town 100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA VISITS FULTON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The South Metro Chapter of 100 Black Men of America made its first visible presence at Fulton Leadership Academy (FLA) in East Point, Georgia. Principal Doug Ward states, “We continue to build relationships with community stakeholders interested in working with FLA. President Kevin Bean of 100 Black Men of South Metro proposed a partnership to support academic programs at FLA. The organization even included FLA on a grant request that upon approval will expand more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) opportunities to our school. The project will bring science professionals to classrooms to meet, lecture, and mentor our scholars. It also will increase field trips that expose scholars to science careers. The 100 is also a POSSE Scholarship nominator and has offered us the opportunity to select one of our scholars to be the recipient of the program as one of their partner schools. POSSE Scholarship recipients receive a fouryear, full-tuition leadership scholarship from Posse’s partner institutions of higher education. The schools are Boston College, The College of Wooster, Brandeis University, Texas A&M University, Syracuse University, and Bard College." Kevin Bean, president the of the South Metro chapter of 100 Black Men of America says, “Education is critical to the success of our youth, and our mission today is to establish partnerships with targeted

South Metro Schools. In these partnerships, we will assist with programs identified by schools and create opportunities that will have an impact on student achievement. Our presence on today sets the stage at the very beginning of the scholastic year. Boys are like sponges, absorbing and mimicking what they see, hear and even read. It is our duty to stand in the gap so they don't have to mimic the wrong sources. If they don’t have proper male role models to emulate, these boys will mirror the next closest thing.” Men of the 100 were seen greeting the young men as they exited the buses; helping the boys tie their ties; advising them to tuck their shirts in and instructing them that image matters and they should present themselves appropriately as they entered the school. The motto in the 100 is “What They See Is What They’ll Be.” For more on the partnership, visit 100BlackMenSouthMetro.org.
ANTHONY FLANAGAN MEMORIAL RECREATION CENTER RENOVATED Mayor Kasim Reed and the Department of Parks and Recreation celebrate the newly-renovated Anthony Flanagan Memorial Recreation Center in Southwest Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Amy Phuong and Atlanta City Councilmember C.T. Martin held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today for the newly-renovated Anthony Flanagan Memorial Recreation Center. Anthony Flanagan’s family, including his widow Rosalyn, and community members were also present to celebrate the reopening of the facility. “Anthony Flanagan was an exemplary athlete and committed mentor to Atlanta youth,” says Mayor Reed. “The newly-renovated recreation center now stands up to its name by offering after-school programming, a new computer lab and job training resources. I’m certain residents in Southwest Atlanta will utilize this center for years to come with great pride.” Upgrades to the center include: green building features; a roof replacement; new
external bathrooms accessible to tennis count users; new ADA handicap-access ramps; a new computer lab; additional parking; and expanding the center by 1,100 square feet. “The opening of this refurbished recreation center marks another important commitment fulfilled by Mayor Reed,” says Councilmember Martin. “This center will provide valuable resources for the community, especially our seniors and youth. I want to personally thank Mayor Reed for his vision and steadfast determination to make this possible.” “The Department of Parks and Recreation has worked closely with the West Manor community to ensure the renovations to this center truly met their needs,” says Commissioner Amy Phuong. “We heard them loud and clear, and we believe the investments made to Anthony Flanagan Memorial Recreation Center will play a central role in the growth and continued sustainability of this community for a long time to come.” This past year, the Department of Parks and Recreation acquired an additional 171 acres of land, which included 14 new parks. This additional greenspace resulted in in-

orsche Cars North America, Inc. has officially opened the doors of its new fine dining “Restaurant 356.” The restaurant is on the complex of the Company’s new $100 million Porsche Experience Center and headquarters. With panoramic views of the world-class, 1.6mile driver development track, 356 is sure to become a premier dining destination for local patrons and for visitors to Atlanta. “Atlanta is a city known for its diverse tapestry and international cuisine,” says Andre Oosthuizen, vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America, Inc. “At Restaurant 356, our guests will enjoy elegant dishes that honor Atlanta’s global flavors, while culminating a unique Porsche experience.” Located on the second level of the Porsche Experience Center, 356 offers a distinct, quiet view of aircraft taking off and landing at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Innovative dishes are served inside a dining room
featuring a contemporary décor, designed with the luxury of the 356 model Porsche. Executive Chef Kyle Forson is known for walking through local forests to collect mushrooms and herbs, giving his food a truly Georgian flair. Former executive sous chef at The Spence, Forson is at the helm of Restaurant 356’s purist approach to food. He focuses on carefully hand-crafted dishes that let the quality of seasonal ingredients shine through. Forson’s own Polish heritage and experiences with French, Californian and Southern fare ensure that no single type of cuisine will dominate the menu. The seasonal menu showcases a refined world cuisine made with locally farmed and foraged ingredients. His style is not just farm-to-table but rather forest to table. A vast wine selection pays tribute to the great winegrowing regions of the world with classically-focused cocktails available for those favoring tradition. “I want guests to enjoy food that enhances the Porsche experience and fuses it with a sense of place,” says Chef Forson. erived from the French word for “to find,” Truvée Wines is a true labor of sisterly love. The McBride sisters' story is fascinating. Robin and Andréa McBride share a father and though both were born in California, Robin was raised by her mom in Monterey and Andréa lived with her mother in New Zealand, each one unaware that the other existed, albeit on the other side of the world. Their father’s dying wish was for the sisters to connect and this happened for the first time when the young women were 16 and 25. They discovered a mutual interest in winemaking and the wine business. The McBride Sisters, along with Diageo Chateau and Estate Wines, have released an affordable luxury wine, including a Chardonnay and a Rhone Style Red Blend. With their 10 years of experience -- Robin growing up around vineyards, forests, and

The wines have been described as follows: “Velvety and full-bodied, the Truvée Red Blend is rich with dominant notes of blueberry, blackberry, caramel, cocoa and red cherry, creating a smooth and decadent flavor. says Robin. “Truvée stylistically combines old world and new world winemaking philosophies to bring affordable luxury to contemporary wine drinkers, and creates the foundation for our wine company.” Andréa states, “We believe our story of empowerment will resonate with women worldwide as they discover the delicious flavors of the Central Coast grapes in their glass of wine. Truvée appeals to the wine lover intrigued by undiscovered and high quality wine. We are excited to share our story and amazing wines with wine lovers across the country. And we hope you’ll share a bottle to those who matter to you most.” According to Stephen Rust, president of Diageo Chateau & Estates wines, “The McBride sisters' story of friendship, sisterhood and passionate commitment to winemaking is one that we feel all wine lovers and wine drinkers will relate to. Bringing their story to life through the creation of Truvée wines has been an exciting challenge in that we are presented with the rare opportunity to marry a strong emotional story with truly exceptional liquids.” Truvée represents the idea of “finding what matters most.” When they found each other, the McBride sisters realized that what matters most was family, and they feel honored to be on this journey together. Truvée wines are available nationwide and locally in Atlanta at both Kafenio and Urban Foodie Café.

A Love By Chance

ur love story began four years ago with a chance meeting at a friend’s Christmas Party,” says the bride. The former Deborah Wilson’s intentions were to go the party, show her face, and leave. But fate stepped in when Keevin approached her, introduced himself, and they ended up talking for hours. Since that cold December night, they have been inseparable. On New Year’s Eve, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. the engagement was set when Keevin proposed on the rooftop of the old Kessler’s building in downtown Atlanta. The couple was married Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Ashton Gardens in Sugar Hill, Georgia. The venue was chosen for its glass enclosed chapel and lush greenery that created a beautiful backdrop for pictures. Surrounded by family and friends, the wedding ceremony was officiated by Keevin’s uncle. The ceremony was complete with a harpist, a beautiful serenade by the groom and his fraternity brothers, and a grand staircase reception entrance. As the reception ended, they made their departure in a vintage 1964 Silver Cloud Rolls- Royce. Both Keevin and Deborah are Atlanta natives who attended Atlanta Public Schools. Deborah attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, and later earned a Doctoral Degree in Education from Clark Atlanta University. Keevin attended Morris Brown College and received his bachelor’s degree from Stillman College. Keevin is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Deborah is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. They are die-hard football fans and eagerly await each Falcons game of the season. They share a love of classic TV sitcoms. In fact, the two can sit and watch episodes of “Sanford and Son” for hours, laughing at 24

the same jokes, as if it were the first time they ever heard them. Deborah currently work as a school counselor and Keevin is a football coach for Lane College. The newlyweds can hardly wait to see what the future holds and the lasting memories that they will create together. When he speaks of his new wife, Keevin says, “I love her enthusiasm for life. Leasing Vs. Owning BUSINESS OWNERS REAL ESTATE DILEMMA ARTICLE TODD BURKHALTER
A
n iconic venue familiar to many Atlantans appears to be moving. Smiths Olde Bar, known for hosting great bands, has been ordered to vacate their premises due to the building being placed on the market to sell. This highlights a conversation that many small business owners often choose to ignore: leasing space versus owning their property. Owning the property that your business utilizes can be a great win for your personal wealth building and tax management. A familiar dilemma that faces many start-up businesses is knowing where to place their business and exactly how much space they will need. I certainly recognize the challenge here. Once these items have been ironed out, I encourage a business owner to begin taking steps to own the property that they inhabit. If you have never been through this process before I would encourage you to work with a well-heeled business consultant/ financial professional to help guide you through the process.
CONSIDERATIONS:
· How to Own the Property, Likely in a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) for asset protection · Consider a Cost Segregation Study. This allows you to properly manage the depreciation on the property. Creating potentially significant tax savings. · Pay Yourself Rent. Another way to create tax advantages within your business. · Avoid Paying Someone Else Rent! This is a big one. Most importantly you maintain control over your business. Watch The Smiths Olde Bar Story on the local news channel website for more. · Retirement Planning. This property could become an income stream that funds your retirement, whether you own the business or not during that time of your life. · Estate Planning. Owning real estate has advantages when you consider techniques to manage and mitigate Estate Taxes. Business owners, I encourage you to address the issue of your business and the real estate that it inhabits. Whether you are currently in a position to own or not, begin taking the proper steps today. You will be glad that you did! Todd Burkhalter is a financial planner in the Atlanta area. Please follow @Todd Burkhalter and @DrivePlanning on Facebook and Twitter for ideas like this and many others that will enhance your personal net worth and your business' value.

-Anxious in Atlanta
Dear Anxious in Atlanta, You are definitely not alone with this issue. Depression and anxiety impacts at least one-third of our society. The good news is that persistent anxiety (if it is unrelated to trauma) is easily treatable. Try a technique called mindfulness. Mindfulness requires that we accept things as they are in the moment without judgment. This may sound difficult, but with daily practice it can become automatic, and the payoff (your sanity) is priceless. Let me take you through a quick exercise. First, breathe deeply and slowly. As you inhale, make your belly push out like a balloon, and as you exhale, imagine deflating the balloon. Next, take notice of your body position. Place both feet on the ground and make an effort to relax your muscles from head to toe. Finally, once you feel your heart rate slow down, fill your mind with a positive and true statement, such as, “Today is tough and I can handle it one moment at a time.” Practice this daily whenever you feel anxiety creeping up on you. It’s easier when you can catch it early. Good luck! When all else fails, breathe.
For more information, visit AskDrRJ.com or Call Dr. RJ at 678-806-6170 for individualized attention.

Mulling Over The Wine Reviews WORDS DENISE SNODELL PHOTOGRAPHY PITTER PRODUCTIONS
34
South Fulton Lifestyle | October 2015
was a weary shopper looking for a simple Riesling when my innocent eyes fell upon this: “Opens with a gorgeous bouquet of yellow flowers, stone fruit and musk against a backdrop of chalk and minerals. It’s richly fruity, with a sharp, honed acidity that’s shocking and penetrating. Finishes long, with an elegant honeyed touch.” Wuuut? I wasn’t sure if I was in a liquor store or in some seedy place reading Fifty Shades of Grapes. As E.L. James would say, “Holy cow!” I looked left. I looked right. I unlocked my cell phone and photographed the posted review card. The description of this pricey 94-pointer just floored me. I had to have it. The words, not the bottle. It’s an old story. Those of us who are, shall we say, less experienced wine lovers are intrigued and bemused by the industry’s word sommeliers. They can be a bit too passionate, or even bizarre, when explaining the flavor subtleties trapped beneath the cork. Call me a rube, but I don’t think my taste buds could ever fathom a backdrop of chalk. Yet the words quoted above had been fermenting in my cell phone picture gallery for a full season, and I had this crushing column deadline. The time arrived to fully investigate this exotic verbiage at a bigger wine store. Lo and behold, my research day coincided with a storewide wine tasting. Everywhere I turned, there was a rep tempting customers with sips of their forbidden fruits. They were stationed at the aisle endcaps, pouring samples of “honed acidity” and “deeply pitched notes of blistered tomato and pomegranate.” It was like a high octane Saturday at Costco. The place was crowded, but I managed to sneak some shots of the review cards. I honestly had no idea a bottle of pinot could tease your palate with supple tannins that build slowly to frame a sappy floral pastille, but apparently it can. I hadn’t quite snapped enough reviews when a champagne expert waved me over to her table. As I slammed down a few sips of Taittinger, I explained why I was there, “I am baffled at how specific and bizarre some of these booze reviews can be. For instance, how can you taste underbrush? Underbrush! Do these aficionados crawl through the woods and chomp on low lying twigs?” She shrugged and told me descriptions including “forest floor brambles” are, indeed, a thing. But, as she poured me something dryer, she said linking squirrel environments to Syrah was the least of the crazy. “I’ve actually seen reviewers use the words ‘manure’ and ‘cat pee.” I was stunned. “Really? Surely they finessed the descriptions with something like ‘hints of fertile meadow and subtle feline mist.’” Though concerned, I managed a quick sip of the dry stuff. But as she poured me yet another sample, she insisted, “No. The exact words were manure and cat pee.” Wow, I thought. Animal droppings. The dark forest’s underbelly. It was dizzying to imagine the wine scribes getting so noir. But a funny thing happened. We continued discussing all the weirdness right there under the f luorescent retail lights. I was on my fifth (or sixth or seventh) sample and—boom-- I tasted it. My senses took me back to a private champagne cave tour I was fortunate to experience years ago in Reims, France. That one sip blossomed into a sweet, yet musty-dry medieval tapestry of tarnished armor, lightly sun-kissed by a lavender reduction… In other words, I think the secret to writing this stuff requires a full immersion.
