What we learned was that there are so many women making a difference. In this issue, we will celebrate six of these amazing wives, who also happen to be mothers. The most gracious Lady Jo Roberson Edwards, herself a resident of South Atlanta, opened up her posh fashion house and event space, C.A.U.S.E. for Elegance, for our cover shoot. (Read more about the charity supported by the house in our Giving Back segment.) What I heard through the chatter of the ladies was something bigger; connections were being formed. Some of the ladies had so many things in common, lived in neighboring communities and had never met. Yet each of these women is leaving an indelible fingerprint on our society. They were not bickering. They were networking. You won’t see that on reality TV. But you will find it here in our pages. We celebrate the good news in our community and thrive on helping you make such wonderful, useful connections in your neighborhood and business. Around Town MAYOR KASIM REED HOSTS VALERIE JARRETT FOR LEAD ON LEAVE More than 250 business and community leaders participated in an armchair conversation today about the importance of paid sick and family leave with Mayor Kasim Reed and White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett. Atlanta is one of 12 cities in 2015 to host the "Lead on Leave" Tour, a national conversation led by the White House and the U.S. Department of Labor highlighting cities, states and businesses that are leading the way in implementing paid leave policies. On July 1, Atlanta became the first municipal government in the metropolitan region to offer paid family leave for city employees. The adoption of paid family leave will allow a primary caregiver to receive six weeks of paid time, and a non-care giver to receive two weeks of paid time, which will run concurrently with the City's current Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy, and will ensure no income disruption due to the growth of their family. The paid leave will be made available for use in increments or as one continuous leave to provide flexibility based on the needs of the employee and their family. "In today's global economy, working men and women find it harder and harder to find the right balance between work and family," says Mayor Kasim Reed. "I am proud to say that the City of Atlanta is leading on this issue by making paid family leave a reality for our workforce." In January, President Barack Obama called on Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act, which would give every worker in America the ability to earn paid sick time. In his FY2016 budget, he also proposed $2 billion in new funds to encourage states to develop paid family and medical leave programs. The Department of Labor will build on previous grants by using $1 million in existing funds to help states and municipalities conduct feasibility studies on paid leave. In order to lead by example, the President also took steps to modernize the Federal workplace by signing a Presidential Memorandum directing agencies to advance up to six weeks of paid sick leave for parents with a new child and called 12

on Congress to pass legislation giving federal employees an additional six weeks of paid parental leave.

Atlanta Medical Center–South in East Point has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry– GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2015. Atlanta Medical Center-South is one of only 91 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The award recognizes Atlanta Medical Center-South’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Atlanta Medical Center-South has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. To receive the ACTION Registry– GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, Atlanta Medical Center-South consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG for four consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients. “The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association commend Atlanta Medical Center-South for its success in

implementing standards of care and protocols. The full implementation of acute and secondary prevention guideline-recommended therapy is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients,” says James Jollis, MD, FACC, ACTION Registry-GWTG Chair and Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Duke University Hospital. Daniel Jackson, Chief Administrative Officer of Atlanta Medical Center-South, says, “This award is a proud achievement for Atlanta Medical Center-South. It reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff who care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families. The implementation of these guidelines requires successful coordination of the cardiovascular team and emergency personnel and is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.” ACTION Registry–GWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. ACTION Registry-GWTG empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.

he Grays are a picture of love and community support and involvement here in South Fulton. They live and work in the area and contribute to the health and wellness of neighbors - spirit, soul and body. Having worked in the ministry as senior pastors, an unconditional and genuine love for people is at the core of their being. Jeff is a certified pastoral counselor and chaplain, and Cass is a licensed professional counselor and clinical director at OGCC Behavioral Health Services in the heart of South Fulton. Cass is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. with the East Point College Park Alumnae Chapter. Cass and Jeff have been married for 16 years. After enduring over eight years of heartache while trying to conceive children

including miscarriages, surgeries, lost pregnancies and more, Jeff and Cass miraculously now have two beautiful children: Tyler and Taylor. Tyler is a 7 year old rising 3rd grader who is smart academically, musically gifted and loves to play baseball. Taylor is a 5 year old kindergartener who is full of spunk, life and (her middle name) Joy. Both are great swimmers and play sports at South Fulton parks. mani Alsobrook is a 13-year-old 8th grader at Wesley International Academy (APS) and has just self-published her first book, Maya in the Middle, which she completely authored and illustrated. The book centers on the life of Maya Hope, a not-so-ordinary 12-year-old girl who's about to enter 7th grade at a new school. How will she adjust to life's challenges? The book allows readers to explore Maya's colorful journal and discover how she not only has to adjust to meet these challenges, but also how she meets new BFFAE's (Best Friends Forever and Ever), while tackling unexpected drama along the way. Unlike the vast majority of the teen books ton the market, Imani’s book gives a real, yet fresh perspective of teen life, written and illustrated by an actual teen. Imani plans to produce a series of Maya in the Middle books to allow readers to “grow with Maya.” Imani is already hard at work producing book two. In addition to being a published author, Imani is also an entrepreneur who started her first business, Peachie Pi Fashions, LLC, at age 11. (Maya in the Middle is sold through Peachie Pi.) Prior to focusing 100 percent of her time on the book, Imani was one Atlanta’s hottest young fashion designers, where her Peachie Pi fashion line was featured in over 27 fashion shows throughout Metro Atlanta, including Atlanta’s top annual fashion shown, Fashion Uncorked. As an entrepreneur, Imani has been interviewed by multiple magazines, websites and online video bloggers. Finally, aside from finalizing her book this summer, Imani teaches a fashion design/arts and crafts class every week to girls (age 5 to 13) who attend Lisa’s Dance Spot’s summer camp. In closing, Maya in the Middle is a first-hand account of how our next generation will be able to set aside their racial differences, find a common core, and become BFFAE's (Best Friends Forever and Ever). Imani, a South Fulton resident, is the daughter of Antwon and Monica Alsobrook. She is a Girl Scout Cadette in Troop 528 at Cascade United Methodist Church, where she is a member. She enjoys acting as a cast member in the "Don't Be A Bully, Speak Up - Speak Out" play at DontBeABully.org. Imani is also an orange belt in Tae Kwon Do. She's doing a lot of great things but genuinely enjoys just being a kid. She whole-heartedly rejects society's current push that encourages girls to grow up too fast. She has become a positive tween/teen role model, whether she realizes it or not.

ho comes to mind when you think of a “Real Wife?” Claire Huxtable? Tracee Ellis Ross? Unfortunately, with the recent influx of reality TV, the media doesn’t offer an accurate portrayal of a “real wife” so we’ve looked for some positive examples. A “real wife” is a strong woman who loves and cherishes her husband and her children. She knows how to balance home, family, and her work. Whether she is a working professional, an entrepreneur, or a stay-at-home mom, she handles herself with dignity, style and grace. We scouted dozens of women right here in South Fulton who are living up to the true meaning of “real wife.”

Television Personality & FGTV General Manager Wife of Fulton Co. Prosecutor Clinton Rucker Married 8 years Atlanta residents first became familiar with Shaunya Chavis in 1994 as an anchorwoman for WSB TV. Today Shaunya serves as the general manager for Fulton Government Television. She’s also the entertainment contributor for 11 Alive News. “I want to change programming to truly reflect people’s lives,” says the University of West Georgia alumna. “I want to impact what our girls are watching in the media. If we don’t show them something different, our society is going to be in trouble.” Born in New York, but raised in Atlanta, Shaunya and her husband share five children together. “The biggest challenge in getting married was trying to blend the family. Being a step-mom is the hardest job on the planet. You can easily discipline your biological kids the way you want. But you have to be careful in how you handle the day-to-day emotions of other people’s children.” Shaunya says friendship helped them work through the early challenges of marriage. “You need to be best friends. Find someone you trust in the fox hole.” Shaunya, who married in her 40’s, says when you’re on your second marriage or if you wait later in life to tie the knot, you come to the table with fixed habits and opinions. She sternly encourages couples in this category not to be so “doggone judgmental.” “Everyone has baggage,” she adds. The power duo attends Word of Faith Church and believes couples should be equally yoked mentally, spiritually and even academically. Shaunya is a member of The National Coalition of 100 Black Women and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She enjoys playing pool and is on a quest to learn to play the piano and takes time for herself on the golf course. She started a ladies golf league called Golf GALS. “Golf brings me quietness, stillness and solace,” says the 49 year old. Shaunya is producing a television project that depicts strong, successful, African-American women on the greens, and making major decisions. “I don’t think one show has come close to getting it right in depicting a real wife. We’re more in depth. We’re real partners... accepting, loving... and we can juggle it all.”

Accountant & Entrepreneur Wife of Charles Hardon, Businessman Married 11 years Caneka Hardon was a college freshman at Clark Atlanta University when a smooth talking brother introduced himself and asked, “Will you marry me?” He followed stating, “Not today… I was thinking more like Wednesday.” Fast forward 25 years, the two are happily married with two beautiful daughters ages 6 and 10. Caneka beams with pride when she reflects on her marriage. “I really value my relationship with Chuck, and I am his helpmate, his partner. I try really hard to be that Proverbs 31 woman.” Caneka attends Elizabeth Baptist Church with her family. She is an accountant, an entrepreneur and author. She and her husband run a direct sales and marketing company, 5Linx Enterprises. Caneka is a stickler about time management. She is awake by 4:30 a.m., at the gym by 5 a.m. In the evenings, she’s picking up the girls from school, making dinner and doing homework. “God innately gives women the gift to multitask,” she says. Caneka, a New Orleans native, used her vision board and organizational skills to author Your Daily Success Planner. “When I saw it in print, I was doing the happy dance all around the house. I knew this was the beginning. My passion is to inspire, empower and impact others.” The couple’s youngest daughter has speech apraxia, a speech disorder. “It was a challenge when we discovered it,” says the 39 year old. “She wasn’t speaking clearly so we had her tested and she was diagnosed at age 4.” Caneka says the couple is able to work together as parents to overcome this challenge. She says the secret to a great marriage is being able to operate in your respective roles. “What works for Chuck and me doesn’t work for everyone else,” she says. “You have to establish your lane. For example, I’m responsible for the cleaning, now whether I do it myself or hire someone, it’s up to me. It’s my lane. Chuck takes the trash out. I may sit it by the door but I’m definitely not taking it out,” she chuckles. Caneka is a member of The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc.; she is the founder of Women Empowering Women (WEw), a nonprofit that promotes the empowerment of women through professional and educational leadership programs. She enjoys singing, dancing, cooking, crafting, hosting events and fitness.

KENYA JOHNSON DANIELLE HUNTER Stay-At-Home Mom and Part-Time Google Contractor Wife of Dr. Wardell Hunter III, School Administrator Married 5 years Five years ago Danielle Hunter was pregnant with a tracheotomy tube in her throat. The young newlywed suffered with throat cancer. Speaking a simple “I love you,” to her husband required maneuvering the medical contraption that covered the hole in her throat. While battling cancer, she gave birth to her oldest son. Fortunately, her tube was removed after her son turned one. “I look back on those pictures and I am so thankful,” says the cancer survivor. “I literally defied everything the doctors thought would happen.” Danielle, a two-time cancer survivor, also beat lung cancer. “Doctors just don’t know it all. If you know an ounce of what the Word says about healing, then you’ll believe.” Danielle, now a mother of three small boys, says her husband was extremely supportive during her cancer treatments. “Wardell took off work for my appointments,” says the 32 year old. “He helped to clean my equipment and he never made me feel ashamed.” Despite Danielle’s medical challenges, she still makes it a priority to be a Godly, supportive wife and mother. “A real wife knows how to seek GOD in all circumstances. You don’t have to be deep, but ask yourself, how can I be kind and helpful in my home?” She recalls meeting her husband 10 years ago at “Grown Folks Night” at Skate Towne skating rink on Old National. “We haven’t been skating in a while, she giggles. “But we recently went zip lining and white water rafting. I encourage couples to seek out different things to experience together.” The Atlanta native warns new couples, “Marriage is not a movie you see on Lifetime. You have days where it’s blissful and times where you have to grow out of your own self-centeredness.” Danielle, a member of World Changers Church, is deeply rooted in her faith and walks with style and grace. Danielle works from home as a part-time contractor for Google. She is a member of the South Fulton chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. This spring, the Spelman alumna walked in the Peachtree Road Race. She plans to pen a book about her journey with cancer.

South Fulton Community Prosecutor & Television Legal Analyst Wife of Attorney Eric Johnson Married 11 years Kenya Johnson and her husband are on opposite sides of the law. She’s a prosecutor and he’s a defense attorney. “Eric thinks everyone is innocent and I think everyone has some level of guilt,” she laughs. The Chicago natives met in 7th grade. But sparks didn’t fly until they bumped into each other at Midway Airport while in law school. “We have very spirited debates, we stimulate each other’s minds,” says the 41 year old. “We can’t go against each other in real court, but we do it on CNN, HLN, and on our own television show.” Kenya and Eric are legal analysts and are currently taping their third talk show, Off the Record, where they debate legal issues, and crimes of passion. The lovebirds connect over their love for the law and have a true partnership. “We love each other, but it’s also a mini company. We have to manage budgets, manage the kids' hectic schedules and household duties.” Kenya is a member of The Links, Inc., Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA), Greater Atlanta Black Prosecutor’s Association (GAPBA), South Atlanta Community Tennis Association (SACTA) and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In addition, Kenya, the mother of two, is a team mom for her son’s Sandtown basketball team. Her daughter is active in tennis. “I’m very busy but it’s a family effort,” she says. “A real wife of South Fulton is a woman whose heart is in the right place. She manages her relationships and her household.” As an avid tennis player, Kenya was ecstatic to see Serena Williams win another grand slam this summer but disappointed over the backlash she received because of her body. “Serena has dominated and now they are looking for excuses. Beauty is how you feel about yourself. I’m a size 16 and I love my curves, and my husband loves them, too,” she chuckles. Her advice to having a happy, healthy marriage is the old saying, “When you’re single keep one eye open, when you’re married keep one eye closed.” She explains, “I try not to complain about the little things: the underwear on the floor, my house is not always neat, or my car is not always clean. TommorrowWorld Manager Wife of Businessman and Cross Country Course Designer Hugh Lochore Married 11 years Brooke has the world at her fingertips, literally. She and her husband, Hugh, are managers for TomorrowWorld, the 3-day music festival that attracts more than 150,000 guests from 75 countries and 50 states to Fulton County. Brooke lives on the 8,000-acre farm where TomorrowWorld is held. She is surrounded by graceful horses, rolling hills, beautiful trees and a breathtaking lake. “I love to sit on my couch with my laptop out here in the country, yet be connected to people all over the world.” While her job is interesting and exciting, Brooke says she really feels accomplished when her two young boys are successful. “If we’re at a dinner party and they use their table manners, I get excited,” she laughs. Brooke serves on the PTA at Chattahoochee Hills Charter School. She feels tremendous joy when watching her boys play sports, make friends and learn new things. “I used to work outside of the home. But I really wanted to be a wife and mother so when we moved here from Scotland, I took a year off,” says the Florida native. “I reevaluated, Hugh and I got reconnected and re-energized.” The couple loves to travel the world, especially to third world countries. Some of their favorite places include Guatemala, Belize, Croatia, Prague and Budapest. “We aren’t the resort type, we like to see how other people are living in the world,” she says. Surrounded by chickens, Brooke says she’s a country girl who keeps a happy home. “You have to encourage your husband and support him. You want him happy when he comes home,” she advises. Brooke serves as an ex-offcio member of the CHCS Governance Board and Foundation. She is a graduate of Valdosta State University and a huge Seminole fan. She enjoys cooking, hosting, reading, traveling, paddling on her lake and hanging out with great friends. Brooke admits that when she turned 40 this year, she finally felt like she had it all. She reveals it took her a while to find her balance. “I had to learn to say ‘no’ and not spread myself too thin. Now I say ‘yes’ to things I’m most passionate about. A real wife knows how to juggle it all and have a blast doing it.”

Kumon Branch Manager Wife of Writer and Salesman Eric Maxie Married 18 years Erika Maxie is a certified fitness trainer and creator of CORE Fitness. She undergoes excruciating training to participate in marathons and triathlons. And she’s chosen to run this race called life with Eric Maxie. The Chicago natives have two teenagers. Together their greatest accomplishment is homeschooling their children. “I wanted to create an environment that could work for my sons and daughter,” says Erika who’s also a manager at Kumon educational services. “My son was diagnosed on the autistic spectrum so it was important to guide my children who are different learners.” A graduate of Clark Atlanta University, Erika is the founder of Classical Conversations, a local home school community based in College Park and Fayetteville. Erika has lived in Atlanta for 25 years and is a long-time supporter of the Southwest Arts Theater. She is a member of Get Fit Atlanta Running club, and a financial supporter of Black Girls Run. A pivotal moment in Erika’s life occurred when her sister suddenly died in 1999 after eating peanuts at a company Christmas party. “She and I were extremely close. She was 29 years old, her son was 18 months old,” she sadly reflects. Without hesitation, Erika adopted her sister’s son. “A real woman, a real wife sets positive examples in her community. She exhibits Godly character in everything she does,” says Erika, a member of World Changers Church. She confesses that being a real wife also means having real conversations and not just superficial talk. “I’ve had to renew my mindset, read books, focus on the Word of God and marinate on His promises.” She admits to putting too much effort into work and not into the family but over the past few years she’s focused on work-life balance. When it comes to marriage, Erika says you have to believe the best about a person. “You get what you focus on in any relationship,” says the 44 year old. “You’re going to have situations. You must have good communication, understanding, love and forgiveness.” Erika believes all marriages are tested and that there’s no new situation under the sun. She advises couples to make the decision to stay together.

Six different women, six different lives... all very busy but with so much in common. They offer open, authentic dialogue about being a “real wife” and the joys and challenges that come with the role. Some days can be exciting and new, and some days are stressful and hectic. But they’ve all managed to balance family, work and play, and we’re happy that they do it right here in South Fulton. 22

Book Baskets HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR COMMUTE OR QUIET TIME BY INCREASING YOUR CHILDREN'S LITERACY ARTICLE KATRINA MORRISON

ook Baskets are a practical way to store your children's library book selections. It helps to keep the books in one place so they don't get mixed in or lost among the books that you own at home. It's also an easy way to transport books from the library to your home. Maintain Book Baskets in the car if you are an on-the-go family, or in the bedroom or family room. Any space where your child is free from distractions, including toys, television, or devices is a great place to set up baskets. Rotate the books in the basket every 10 to 14 days to keep the children engaged and interested in reading. You may want to consider including poetry books, graphic novels aka comic books, or self-instruction books like How to Make Paper

Airplanes. Get comfortable browsing the children's non-fiction section. You may be surprised about what you will find there. After several trips to the library filling your Book Basket, you will become more comfortable with your book selections. Your kids will tell you what they love and hate about your selections. Keep an open mind and allow them to explore their interests. I recommend reading the inside cover, the back cover, and flipping through some of the pages to make sure your selection is age appropriate. Talk to your librarian about popular children's books and place them on hold if they are not available at the library. Use book lists, like the "2014 Notable Children's Book List" to or "My Favorite Books of 2014" to make some good selections.

se this list during your first visit to the library to fill up your Book Basket. What's in the basket is just as important as having a book basket. Maintaining diversity in your basket will help to keep little minds curious and wanting more. • 2 Audio books. Books on CD or cassette (yes we still have a cassette player in the car and one at home) are a good way to bring stories alive. They usually come with a book for your child to follow along. • 2 Non-Fiction books. Ask your children what they are learning in school and check out books on the topic. Also get at least one book on something they expressed an interest in such as architecture or the weather. There is an entire section for children's nonfiction in most libraries. • 1 Geography or Cultural book. Global perspective is a big concept to teach younger children. Getting them familiar with states, countries, and cultures early on would give them an advantage. Explore a variety of holidays around the world and other fun stuff that will peak your child's interest. • 1 Award-winning book. This may require a little bit of digging on your part since these usually fly off the shelf. Get a list of award winners from your librarian or do a little research before you go. These books are mostly indicated with a gold or silver medallion on the cover or spine.

• 1 Children's Book Classic. Three Little Pigs, Hansel and Gretel, or The Lion and The Mouse are all examples of timeless children books. These books usually have a moral component that is great for read aloud and family discussions. • 1 Historical Fiction Book or Self Image Book. We typically go for the African American picture books that tell stories about accomplishments of our ancestors and builds on self-esteem. Whichever you decide is best for your family be sure to review the book since some books, even the picture books, have strong subject matter. With any book, make sure you read the book or inside cover before giving it to your child. • 2 Chapter Books. If your child is ready for chapter books go ahead and gather a few. Ask them what they want to read and look for those options. Mystery, history and government are just a few themes covered in chapter books for young readers. I like to read reviews on chapter books first since some language may not be appropriate for my young readers. • 2 or 3 Picture Books. These are the fun stories with creative illustrations your child not only likes to read but you also enjoy. Some of our favorite books are Too Many Stripes by David Shannon and Skippy Jon Jones by Judy Schachner.

C

.A.U.S.E. for Elegance is the Jr. Apprentice Training Program of Camp Village, Inc., a non-profit organization. Camp Village has served 2,868 youth in the Metropolitan Atlanta area in 12 years. Three years ago, Camp Village we hired 32 students who were once in the program because they were “too old for camp” and “too young and without skills” to get a job. “That is when I realized we had to provide opportunities for our youth as they transitioned from the program,” says Founder/ Executive Director Lady Jo Roberson Edwards. When we were not as successful with providing mentors they could shadow with the hopes of their getting hired, we decided we should start our own business for youth where they could train, learn skills, build resume, and earn a stipend for their efforts." After much contemplation and evaluation, it was decided they should go into the retail business. In retail, they could learn skills they could use in many other disciplines and the idea of C.A.U.S.E. for Elegance was born. C.A.U.S.E. is an acronym for Causes All United to Serve and Empower. This fundraising and the Jr. Apprenticeship project are possible through the generous donations of many individuals, designers, stores and manufacturers where all above costs will provide scholarships/stipends for students. This collection of evening, bridal, prom, cotillion, day wear, furs, jewelry, bags, men’s suits, shirts, ties and embellished ink pens, etc., is from many local, national and international designers. “We are also introducing many youth designers and their very upscale, avant-garde designs. We also anticipate the launch of the C.A.U.S.E. Fashion Line and the House of Art & Design with exhibitions given by noted artists and photographers as an additional fundraising initiative,“ says Lady Jo. C.A.U.S.E. is also an event space for receptions, bridal showers, book signings, workshops, organization meetings, designer Trunk Shows, etc. The luxurious space lends itself especially well to birthday parties, princess teas with manicures and pedicures for little girls and even boasts a runway for fashion shows. Parting Thoughts

The Definition of a Real Atlanta Woman WORDS SALEEMAH JACKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY TIFFANY POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY

I

n the Parting Thoughts section titled “The Atlanta I Know” in the March issue of South Fulton Lifestyle, I briefly wrote of the disappointment felt when as Atlantans we see yet another reality show in which adults throw tantrums that rival any toddler’s. This thought engenders the question, “What defines a real woman in Atlanta?” I didn’t have to look far for my answer. In taking a quick inventory in my immediate group of friends and acquaintances alone, I realized I see these real Atlanta women every day. These women uplift their families and communities daily by steadily working to make the world a better place. Selflessly and consistently, these women positively impact others in their daily lives. One friend specifically comes to mind. After years of tutoring teen moms in her spare time, she decided to focus on preparing younger children for success in a global world. A mom of three, she and her husband started a language immersion school where students as young as 2 years old are fluent in Chinese and Spanish. In fact, students from her school are some of the youngest in the state of Georgia to pass the Chinese fluency exam. Another friend, an aspiring actress and mother of two, has started her film career at her own pace. A natural, she has attracted the attention of major talents in the film industry in Atlanta and in Hollywood. Yet, she refuses to sacrifice her morality or integrity for the allure of fame or money, if a role requires anything she is uncomfortable saying or portraying. In the budding film bastion of “Peachwood,” there is no dearth of actresses wanting the lead roles in the latest studio productions being made in our city. But, here is a real housewife unafraid to be herself and without a camera following her every

move is making an immensely positive impact in the lives of her children and other children who she volunteers to teach acting lessons for free. I am reminded of the true essence of what Atlanta’s women can accomplish in thinking of another friend who creatively discovered a method of getting her kids to learn about healthy eating. She has written a series of children’s books in which a practical guide is given to teach children how to make healthy food choices. At a time when our nation’s First Lady has championed our ability to lessen the health problems of tomorrow through the food choices of today, this friend’s books are both timely and necessary. The examples of women positively impacting their communities and--from a microcosmic level--the world, are endless as we Atlantans think of are our own wives friends, co-workers, neighbors, mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces and cousins. Without contention in their daily interactions, and with diplomatic decorum, these women are powerful. They are the women who like the Biblical prophet Isaiah, unashamedly say, “Here am I, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8) when tackling some of the challenges currently facing our younger generation. Challenges such as obesity, physical health, lack of self-esteem, and struggles with literacy and math are not easily overcome without tangible examples of victory. As Sojourner Truth once said, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back and get it right side up again!” The real women of Atlanta know this and are positive examples of this truth. Thank you for being brave enough to do so.
