As the holiday season fills the air with magic and anticipation, one of our favorite family traditions is to bundle up, grab some hot chocolate, and to explore the neighborhood’s most dazzling light displays. There’s something special about the glow of Christmas lights against a crisp winter night, illuminating houses adorned with twinkling colors, inflatable snowmen, and nativity scenes. These drives are always filled with laughter and joy, reminding us of the warmth and beauty of the season.
In this holiday issue, we’re delighted to bring you stories that celebrate the spirit of togetherness and giving. You’ll find a spotlight on the charming Stein Lodge, a perfect winter getaway nestled in the heart of nature. Its cozy, rustic ambiance and breathtaking views make it an ideal escape for anyone looking to embrace the magic of the holidays in style.
We’re also proud to feature the incredible work of the West Valley Mavericks, a group dedicated to giving back to our community during the holidays and beyond. Their commitment to making a difference is a reminder of the true spirit of this season.
In addition to sharing our community’s stories, we’re thrilled to dive into our partners’ family traditions, each unique and heartwarming in its own way. For us, the holidays are about savoring the simple joys—like baking and decorating holiday treats as a family. My husband and I love filling our home with the sweet aroma of freshly baked cookies and adding festive touches to each one, bringing a bit of handmade charm to our celebrations.
May this issue inspire you to create new memories, cherish old traditions, and celebrate the warmth of the holiday season.
Happy Holidays!

Bringing the West Valley together with community events, and endless support for local causes!
ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE WEST VALLEY MAVERICKS
The West Valley Mavericks Foundation’s journey began in 2012, when Phoenix Children’s Hospital approached three community leaders to help raise funds for a new campus in Avondale. In response, the leaders brought together a group of young entrepreneurs, challenging them to create an organization focused on charitable giving and community
“Our mission is to make the West Valley a better place, bringing the community together to support and uplift one another.”
support. Thus, the West Valley Mavericks were officially established on September 13, 2012, and have since become a staple in the West Valley, known for their commitment to making a positive impact.
The Mavericks Foundation operates with a clear mission: to enhance the West Valley as a place to live, work, and play by investing in local charities and fostering a spirit of generosity. From supporting educational initiatives to aiding healthcare programs, the Mavericks have forged a broad reach across the community, assisting organizations in areas ranging from youth development to veteran support. This year-round focus on philanthropy is driven by a dedication to making a tangible difference, and the Foundation’s members are at the heart of these efforts, volunteering their time, expertise, and resources to bring projects to life.
As the holiday season approaches, the Foundation’s work intensifies, with special initiatives aimed at
brightening lives and fostering unity. This season, they will host two significant events: the Patriot AllAmerica tournament at the Wigwam Resort and the Thunderbolt Golf Tournament at Sterling Grove Golf Club. Both tournaments, scheduled from December 28–31, are not only thrilling for golf fans but deeply meaningful in their purpose. Student-athletes at these tournaments carry bags bearing the names of fallen soldiers, honoring their memory and sacrifices. The events serve as a tribute to military personnel and a reminder of the courage displayed by those who gave their lives for the nation.
Additionally, the Mavericks will participate in “Shop with a Cop” events, taking place at various locations, including Kohl’s in Tolleson on December 6, Surprise on December 7, and Tolleson again on December 12. This annual event brings joy to local children, giving them a chance to shop for gifts with police officers, creating a heartwarming
experience that fosters positive relationships between children and law enforcement. This program not only provides much-needed holiday support for families but also strengthens the bonds within the community.
Looking to the future, the West Valley Mavericks Foundation has ambitious goals. They aspire to expand their reach, supporting even more charities and extending the benefits of their work across the West Valley. They hope to inspire others to join them in their mission, whether through partnerships, sponsorships, or simply by attending events. As the Mavericks see it, community support is vital, and they are proud of the backing they have received from local businesses and residents.
The Mavericks believe that everyone has a role to play, and sometimes the most meaningful contribution can be as simple as attending an event. By coming together to enjoy a day at a tournament or participate in a community gathering, residents contribute to the success of the Foundation’s mission. The Mavericks hope that the West Valley community will continue to show up, engage, and help build a legacy of generosity that uplifts everyone.
The West Valley Mavericks Foundation is more than just an organization; it’s a movement, one driven by a shared desire to make a difference. For them, every dollar raised, every volunteer hour, and every event is a step toward creating a stronger, more compassionate community. Through dedication and collective effort, the Foundation is making the West Valley a place where generosity thrives, and where every member has the opportunity to participate in building a better future.
FROM SANTA VISITS TO FESTIVE FEASTS, THESE TIMELESS TRADITIONS SPREAD JOY ACROSS GENERATIONS.
Way back in the 1950’s my grandparents started a tradition with my mom that has spanned through me and my siblings, my children and now my grandchildren. Santa and Christmas have always been a wonderful time of the year. We traveled all over the world so when we were able, me and my siblings sat with Santa every year. I always looked forward to that as a child. Because of this strong tradition, I have made sure my 5 children sit with Santa every year. My daughter and her husband are continuing the tradition. I love that we are still continuing something so fun!
Each year during the holidays, the Molina staff gathers for a champagne toast to celebrate the remarkable creations we’ve crafted for clients, turning their visions into reality. Together, we reflect on the unforgettable moments and shared experiences with our clients, each other, and the community. It’s a special time to appreciate the year’s achievements and the bonds we’ve built along the way, leaving us inspired as we look forward to new projects and memories in the coming year.
Every December, we host a Holiday Appreciation Event to express our gratitude to our drivers for all they do for us and our clients. For the past five years, this event has been dedicated to honoring our drivers. This year, in our sixth annual celebration, we’re excited to extend our appreciation to include our valued clients as well. Another cherished December tradition is my Christmas Eve and Christmas Day attire! Every Christmas Eve, I dress in festive outfits and take on as many rides as possible, allowing my drivers to enjoy the holiday off. It’s my way of spreading joy while keeping the spirit of the season alive for our clients.
Every Christmas Eve, we gather for our big family dinner, play games, and slip into our festive Christmas pajamas, filling the night with laughter and joy. On Christmas morning, we wake up to open gifts, savoring each special moment together. Then, we make my Mema’s infamous sausage breakfast casserole, topped with New Mexican-style red chili—a comforting family favorite that brings everyone to the table. The rest of the day is all about unwinding, enjoying each other’s company, and reliving cherished memories, making the holiday truly special.
Briarwood transforms into a festive wonderland during the holidays, bringing joy and excitement to every celebration. Our members look forward to a variety of events, from the lively Jingle Bell Rock party to a delightful Christmas Eve Buffet. We top off the season with a memorable New Year’s Eve Balloon Drop, creating an unforgettable experience for all. With decorations that capture the magic of the season, Briarwood becomes a home away from home for our members, where they can celebrate cherished holiday traditions with friends and family, making new memories in an atmosphere filled with warmth and holiday spirit.
One of our favorite office traditions is our Secret Santa gift exchange, where the team shares holiday cheer and thoughtful surprises. This year, we’re excited to give back by setting up a Christmas Angel tree in the office. Each team member can contribute to help those in need, making a meaningful impact during the holiday season. This tradition brings us closer together and allows us to spread joy both within our office and throughout our community. It’s a special way for us to celebrate the season and share the spirit of giving.
Our family tradition starts with matching Christmas pajamas and gathering to read a cherished story passed down through generations, Sam’s Christmas Wish. This special tale reminds us of the importance of serving others and accepting love and kindness during difficult times. Afterward, we spread holiday cheer by doing Secret Santa cookie drops for some of our elderly neighbors—our own “nice” version of doorbell ditching! This tradition brings us together, filling our hearts with gratitude and joy as we share the spirit of the season with others in our community.
Our tradition as a family, and now including our daughter-in-law’s family, is to gather for a cozy dinner on Christmas Eve. We all dress in our festive Christmas pajamas, bringing out the holiday spirit, and hold a fun, competitive gingerbread house-making contest. After the contest, everyone receives a personalized stocking filled with little surprises and treats. This special time together has become a beloved tradition, filled with laughter, creativity, and warmth, setting the perfect tone for Christmas Day.
Norwegian potato dumplings, or Resmacomas as we call them, vary across families in recipe, name, and spelling, but this is the Lenning way! While we’re thrilled to share this beloved (and coma-inducing) recipe, it’s hard to capture Great Grandma Eunice’s method exactly. “Every potato is different…” she’d say as she prepared bacon water with 15 family members gathered around. Her memory lives on each holiday season as we make and share this meal with friends. Fresh or fried, Resmacomas are best served with breakfast meat, applesauce, butter, and salt.
Potato Dumplings Recipe:
Ingredients: 7 cup grated raw potatoes, 2 tablespoons salt, 6 cups of flour - approximate test for stiffness * If potatoes are extra watery or moist drain off some liquid before mixing with flour.
Instructions: Mix together flour and potatoes until stiff enough to form a ball with a large spoon. Dump in boiling water (salted) I put a couple of strips of bacon in the water. It adds some flavor and then they won’t stick to the bottom as much. Watch carefully and keep the dumplings from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Cook about a hour or so and serve with butter, applesauce, and sausage (or whatever you like most). Good Luck!!
Join our local Police Officers for an officer walk and see all the adoptable animals looking for their forever homes. Police and Paws Project will be sponsoring select adoption fees.

The Holidays are always one of my favorite times of the year. It’s more than the lights, the shopping and presents. It’s the thoughtfulness, the giving back, and the time we share. The time we spend with family and friends is priceless. The memories we make and the unforgettable experiences we share are what I look forward to most.
One of my favorite Holiday Traditions is my annual Christmas party. We welcome all our family, friends, and neighbors to join us in celebrating the holiday season. We have the fire pits going and the kids enjoy the Hot Chocolate & S’more’s Bars, along with all the other treats everyone brings to share. I bake all my favorite treats and look forward to sharing them each year with everyone. The house is decorated from floor to ceiling with Christmas music playing as the sound of laughter and giggling travels throughout our home.
Another favorite tradition is each Christmas Eve my family gets a special delivery from Santa with special Christmas pajamas and a new mug for hot chocolate. We all get in our pj’s and have our Christmas Eve Gingerbread House competition, my girls have definitely developed some amazing skills and learned a few tricks over the years! We then make my famous hot chocolate with homemade whipped cream and spend the evening watching all of our favorite Christmas movies all snuggled up on the couch.
From my family to yours, I hope everyone has an amazing holiday and enjoy the time with family and friends.
Merry Christmas,

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
