MARCH 2016 publisher/editor

hen I was in high school, I didn’t care for March. The wind became warmer; the snow started to melt and my favorite season was almost over. You see, I was a competitive downhill ski racer. March signaled the winter sports season was ending, and it was time for me to turn in my skis for a slower paced life.

These days, I still love winter, but, I also look forward to March with its longer days and warmer temperatures. Everyone starts coming out of our cozy hibernation. Life becomes new and fresh and fun again. In SW Lake County, March is a great month to visit the many local forest preserves to see the small buds that will bloom into flowers; hear the local songbirds announcing the new season and maybe even catch a glimpse of a fawn. Long Grove is beginning to bloom again, as well. Its quaint streets are busier, and it’s easier to get out and about to visit new stores like Village Pizza and BBQ , as well as the old favorites, such as Epilogue and the Village Tavern. SW Lake Lifestyle magazine is for, and about, our readers. You can help shape your magazine by sharing with us your pictures, your stories and your ideas for future issues.

LOCAL FILM FESTIVAL INSPIRES FILMMAKERS TO START YOUNG ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY VANESSA GRIFFIN

12

SW Lake Lifestyle | March 2016

P

ark City, Utah isn’t the only town hosting a winter celebration of film these days. Lake Zurich is home to a cadre of young filmmakers inspired to express themselves through short films, made for the annual District 95 Film Festival. “I was never good at sports. I tried playing instruments, but that wasn’t for me. I loved being in plays, but I’m just not a great singer,” said Michael Gallagher II, 19, a 2015 graduate of Lake Zurich High School. “I had trouble fitting in. But I really loved presenting and being in front of people, so I was thrilled to discover the Film Fest,” he said. Gallagher won Best in Show for his animated short titled Surf ’s Up last year. “Film is complex—there are so many layers for a director to think about. The best movies have a story and then there’s a second story. As a director, you work to keep that theme a secret to be uncovered,” he said. Gallagher should know, since he’s now studying Digital Media Production at Kent State University in Kent, OH. He credits his participation in the Festival with helping him decide on his major and intended career path. For Andrew Orals, 14, filmmaking is a creative experiment. “It’s a way of doing something I love, writing and performing music, and combining that with something I didn’t know as much about,” he said. Orals’ entry for the 2016 Festival, The Cloud

is Snowing, is inspired by the silent films of decades past, and mashed up with observations about the digital cloud. Orals composed all of the music for this film, incorporating his own piano and violin recordings. He also used a Christmas gift—powerful new editing software. Pam Orals says filmmaking is a great learning experience for her son. “Making a film is complicated. You need a plan. And sometimes you have to experiment,” she said. “There was one night when Andrew and two other kids spent hours shredding paper and trying to create a snow effect. In the end, he didn’t like how it looked, so it didn’t make it into the film,” she said. “And that’s OK—he learned something.” Playing around with special effects apps and making trailers was fun, but when Drew Morton, 10, saw the Film Festival call for entries, he decided it was time to try making a real short film. His first entry, Fourth Grade Chronicles: Readers Beware, is about the dramatic, dangerous reason fourth graders aren’t reading anymore. “He had the vision in his mind of how he wanted the story to unfold. I could see him incorporating all of the things he loves in books and stories into his film,” said Drew’s mom, Jessica Morton. “He learned a lot about how to prepare for filming, and how to get all of the shots he needed,” she said. “I’ve never been to a Festival—this is my first one. I’m excited to see what other people have done. Maybe it will give me ideas for my next film,” the fourth grade Morton said. WHY A FILM FESTIVAL?

Good cameras have become more affordable. Most computers and tablets come loaded with video editing software. Even Hollywood directors are experimenting with making films with iPhones. These realities were not lost on Lake Zurich educators when they started the Film Festival in 2013.

Angela Fortune, Chair of the Fine Arts & Business Departments at LZHS; Jean Malek, Director of Communications for Community Unit School District 95; and Lisa Warren, D95 Board of Education member and Educational Foundation representative 14

SW Lake Lifestyle | March 2016

“We set out to empower our students of all ages to express their ideas and demonstrate their creativity via the complex medium of film,” said Lisa Warren, who serves as a member of the CUSD 95 Board of Education and also as treasurer of the D95 Educational Foundation. “It’s been so gratifying to see students step up to the challenge and make some very entertaining and interesting films over the years.” Each year, a call for entries invites students from kindergarteners through high school seniors to submit films up to 5 minutes long in a variety of categories, including documentary, comedy/drama, animation and public service announcement. About a dozen of the entries are selected and screened, with winners chosen from three age categories (elementary, middle and high school) based on technical quality, storytelling, artistic merit, overall effect and other criteria. The Festival rounds out an excellent set of arts programs in the district, according to Angela Fortune, teacher and fine arts/business department chair at Lake Zurich High School and coordinator of the Festival. “Our music, theatre and visual art students are outstanding, and they get great exposure,” Fortune said. “But we saw a missing opportunity for students who are not involved in formal arts activities,” she said. “The Festival gives those students a way of expressing their creative ideas, and it’s grown every year since we started.” “So many things in the workplace are media-based now,” said Nancy Coleman, Executive Director of the D95 Educational Foundation. “These students are learning how to get their message across—how to entertain and engage an audience. And those skills will serve them well,” she said. Parent Laura Gallagher is thrilled that her son and many other students continue to find the Festival inspiring. “I think it’s absolutely wonderful that our district promotes and celebrates creativity in this way, and encourages children of all ages to express themselves,” she said. “These children could be the next Steven Spielberg, for all we know. They just have to start somewhere.” Who knows, they could even end up at Sundance.

N

eck-snapping acceleration and cackling exhaust pipes are the first signs that the Range Rover Sport SVR is a performance car dressed in SUV clothes. The snarling 550-horsepower V-8, borrowed from Jaguar F-Type, is capable of propelling this two-and-a-half-ton rig to 60 miles per hour is 4.5 seconds and has a top track speed of 162 mph. The eightspeed automatic is a perfect partner. While the notion of creating a high-performance SUV may seem like a contradiction, it’s the price of admission to the luxury class because BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Jeep all have one. The SVR comes from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division. It was chosen as Four Wheeler of the Year by Four Wheeler magazine. Land Rover says the SVR completed a lap of the famous Nurburgring Nordschliefe racetrack in 8 minutes and 14 seconds, a time that is competitive with many sports cars. Large Brembo front brakes are installed to cope with the higher speeds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 19 on the highway. If you get frisky with the throttle, however, your mileage will be considerably less. The SVR is more than a road burner; it also has off-road chops although I wonder about the wisdom of taking a vehicle this expensive into the woods or over rocks. delivering off-road capability on all of its vehicles. An adjustable air suspension enables the vehicle to rise so it has 10.9 inches of ground clearance and 20 inches of wheel travel. The Terrain Response system lets the driver choose transmission, suspension and traction settings for optimum drivability in a variety of off-road conditions. Settings include Dynamic; Automatic; Rock Crawl; Grass, Gravel and Snow; Mud and Ruts; and Sand. The test vehicle, from Land Rover’s press fleet, was also equipped with lane departure warning, automatic parallel parking and 360-degree parking assist. The Range Rover’s interior is as plush as one would expect for a vehicle in this price segment. The two-tone sports seats have pronounced shoulder bolsters for support during high-speed driving. First-class materials are used throughout. Carbon fiber trim is used as a counterpoint to the leather and brushed aluminum. Knobs are used for the climate control, but navigation and audio are controlled by a touchscreen and I still find the menu system to be less than intuitive. The instrument cluster is a 12-inch Thin Film Transistor screen. The gauges are digital representations of analog gauges. The numbers on either side of the tachometer and speedometer needles grow slightly brighter as the needles sweep around each virtual dial. Upscale items included the heated windshield, Meridian audio system, adaptive cruise control, navigation and Bluetooth telephone connectivity.

PRICE: The base price of the test vehicle was $112,345. Options included the SVR’s more powerful engine, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, metallic paint, ebony headliner, black roof, carbon fiber veneer, heated windshield and a carbon-fiber engine cover. The sticker price was $127,920. WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles. POINT: The Range Rover Sport SVR has a whopping 550 horsepower and a 162-mph top track speed, yet it is capable of serious off-road activity because the air suspension increases ground clearance and the Terrain Response System has settings for nearly any condition. COUNTERPOINT: High-performance luxury SUVs seem like expensive toys.

’ve been fortunate enough to visit this wonderful country three times in as many years. There is so much to explore and so many beautiful sites to see. Not only that, but it’s truly somewhere that I’ve never felt more safe and welcome. To put it simply, Australia is a magical land that will hold a huge piece of my heart forever.

There is nothing like it on this earth! Sydney is a great starting point for visiting Australia, and boasts a lively arts and culture scene, abundant with galleries, museums and performance venues throughout the city. One of the most iconic landmarks in all of Australia is The Sydney Opera House. Built on Bennelong Point, it is recognizable

around the world for its unique architectural design. The construction alone took 15 years and cost $80 million. The structure contains several large auditoriums and has an average of 3,000 events a year that are attended by an estimated two million people and includes a 1,547-seat Opera Theatre. CONTINUED >

Sydney Opera House

“One of the most iconic landmarks in all of Australia is The Sydney Opera House. Built on Bennelong Point, it is recognizable around the world for its unique architectural design.” In addition to Sydney, there are countless options to experience in the land down under. I learned this when I had first visited myself in 2013. Since then, the destination has drawn me back again in 2014 and 2015. Australia had long been my dream; top of my bucket list! The moment I stepped off the airplane, the world around me seemed to stop for a brief moment as I soaked it all in. It simply took my breath away with its stunning beauty and the amazingly warm people. The first decision that needs to be made when visiting Oz is which of the six states within its two territories you’d like to visit. Each is unique from the cities to the countryside. If you want a truly remote experience, hit the outback, where you can dine at The Sounds of Silence Dinner in Uluru. This dining journey takes place at Ayers Rock, a portion of the outback that is virtually undiscovered. Here you will sip champagne while listening to a traditional, Aboriginal didgeridoo. The colors of the sunset above Ayers Rock are the most brilliant bursts of oranges, reds, and yellows you’ll ever see. If you crave adventure, head towards the Red Centre. Red Centre is a desert region near the city of Alice Springs, where you can discover Kings Canyon, Kata Tjuta and the MacDonnell Ranges. Or, head 22

SW Lake Lifestyle | March 2016

south for an entirely differAyers Rock ent experience to the state of Victoria. Here you can explore the city of Melbourne, take a scenic hot air balloon ride over the Yarra Valley, or drive along the coast to see The Twelve Apostles. Another option would be to venture off of the mainland to gorgeous Tasmania. Tassie, as the locals call it, offers you the opportunity to take a stunning hike through Freycinet National Park, or you can take a more casual stroll through the Salamanca Market held on Saturdays. The Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in the city of Hobart, offers the experience of feeding Kangaroos and the endangered Tasmanian Devil. The city of Brisbane is home to The Australian Zoo, where you can witness animals unique to the country and home of the famous “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin. Within New South Wales, see the vast landscape of the Blue Mountains. This area gets its name from a blue haze commonly attributed to the area’s eucalyptus forests. One of the best ways to view these mountains is on the Scenic Railway which is the steepest passenger railway in the world.

If a tropical vacation is more of what you’re looking for, The Whitsunday Islands are where you want to be. You can take a high speed catamaran to the inner or outer portions of the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is a magnificent sight to see. From snorkeling and diving in the crystalline aqua blue waters to spectacular Whitehaven Beach, this an area of the country not to be missed. No matter what you’re searching for in your travels, you’ll be able to find it in Australia. From its remarkable scenery, unique wildlife and the Australian people themselves it is an experience of a lifetime.

TAKE A

HEALTHY

STEP NUTRITION GUIDE FOR SENIORS

ARTICLE LINDA SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

H

ealthy eating and exercise play a key role in aging gracefully. Fortunately, there are many tips and resources available to help navigate healthy eating while aging. Follow the tips below in order to take a healthy step into the New Year. Seniors need fewer calories to keep the body running. Even though caloric needs typically decrease during this time, it is still important to make food choices that are nutrient dense and provide our bodies with a greater value. Food choices with adequate potassium, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and fiber are a few of the nutrients we need to focus on more as we age. Additionally, sense of smell and taste may begin to change which can greatly impact the ability or desire to make sensible food decisions. Try adding new spices to foods to help liven up your food. Another issue that may arise is a decline in dentition. It may become more difficult to chew some foods so it is important to make choices that are not only easy to chew but also provide the nutritional benefits that your body requires. Seniors tend to avoid meat since that may be hardest to chew. This is detrimental to our health as we may not be consuming adequate protein to fuel our bodies and maintain muscle mass. Suggestions for easier to chew protein sources include quinoa, eggs, yogurt, milk, soy, fish that can be easily flaked and protein shakes homemade or commercially prepared such as Ensure or Boost. The USDA launched a tool in 2010 called “My Plate” when the Dietary Guidelines for Americans were changed. My Plate is designed to give a visual perspective of what your plate at meals should look like. Nutritional recommendations were originally 24

SW Lake Lifestyle | March 2016

conveyed to consumers by using the Food Guide Pyramid developed in 1992. My Plate has replaced that. A few of the My Plate recommendations include: make ½ your plate fruits and vegetables, make at least half your grains whole, go lean with protein and switch to fat-free or low-fat dairy. Additional information about this helpful tool can be found at ChooseMyPlate.gov. Keeping active is also a very important component to healthy aging. Please check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Even though you may not have a gym membership or it is too cold to walk outside, there are still many alternatives to get your body moving. This can even be as easy as moving your arms and legs back and forth while sitting in your living room watching your favorite program! Many health clubs or park districts have indoor walking tracks available to their residents. Locally, Barrington Park District has an indoor walking track available to use for a minimal fee. You can reach them at 847.304.5279 or BarringtonParkDistrict.org for more information. For additional local senior resources, contact the Barrington Area Council on Aging at 847.381.5030 or BACOA.org. This agency provides resources such as activities and programs for active seniors, information on housing or in-home care services, meals with wheels, educational programs related to aging and Medicare/ Medicaid enrollment. Remember to make changes one at a time rather than changing every “bad” habit that you have had for the last 50 years. J

eff Eggert was ready for a change. "Ask anybody who's spent decades in the corporate world and they're likely to know exactly what I mean," says Jeff while relaxing with a cup of coffee a few steps from his newest venture, 18|8 Fine Men's Salon in downtown Barrington. After 29 years in corporate finance for two highly successful Fortune 500 companies, in 2014 Jeff faced a big decision: Either continue on the same corporate path — long days, quarter-by-quarter sprints to earning reports and cost cutting to meet earnings targets — or try something new that’s more challenging and ultimately, more satisfying. 18|8 is both an old and new approach to men’s grooming. It’s old school by being a guy’s hangout with professional stylists and barbers giving great haircuts. What makes this concept new is 18|8 is 28

more than just a barber shop. Jeff’s team is trained to offer all those services that men can otherwise only get at a women’s salon. They share with the clientele great advice on style, trends and grooming for today’s man. A clubby feel welcomes every guy walking in the door. In many cases, clients make appointments online. (Name another barber shop in the area that does that.) “For anybody who wants to indulge, we’ll serve a great premium beer to help our customer’s enjoy their experience,” Jeff says. “Imagine you’ve just got off the train or had a rough commute at the end of a long day. This is a great place to unwind.” It took Jeff a solid year of working with a consultant before he settled on opening what he hopes will be a series of 18|8

salons in the suburbs. His territory, granted by the Californiabased parent company of 18|8, extends from Barrington east to Interstate 94, and north to the Illinois-Wisconsin state line. Launching his first salon in the Barrington Village Center was a no brainer. After scouting many potential locations in the northwest suburbs, Jeff says: “We’ve loved working in the village from Day One. This is a great community, the downtown is definitely on the move and everybody I’ve worked with to get this up-and-running has been very helpful.” Joining Jeff in this new career is his wife, Cathy, who agrees that the concept is perfect for a place like Barrington. Their prior experience working with world-class brands provided them with the experience and insight to know that the vision of 18|8’s founders was an excellent fit for them. “This is fundamentally a great place and a great way for a man to receive grooming services,” Jeff says. After a meeting with the company founders, Jeff and Cathy knew this is what they wanted to do for the next phase in their careers. 18|8’s two founders – a serial entrepreneur and an English barber with 40 years of experience – launched the first salon over ten years ago, and slowly but surely the company has spread across the country. The Barrington 18|8, opened in mid-2015, was one of the first salons in Illinois. Other locations include Northbrook, Naperville and most recently, Lombard. So, what about the name of the place? “18|8 is the formula for stainless steel,” Jeff says. Take high grade steel, add 18% chromium and 8% nickel and the result is a strong, beautiful and high-performance stainless steel. Since 18|8 also provides a customer a clean shave, stainless steel is precisely what the discerning, wellgroomed man wants. “18|8 helps a guy get rid of a rusty exterior,” Jeff adds laughing.

Parting Thoughts

THE FINE ART OF

HOME STAGING ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

any people subscribe to the theory of the 3 P’s when selling a home: Put up a sign, put it online and pray it sells. According to many surveys a properly staged home will sell twice as fast for 6% higher than non-staged or improperly staged homes. Like all arts, there are some basic rules to follow to stage your home to its fullest potential. Start with curb appeal: You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, and the first impression of your house is the exterior. Be sure the lawn is mowed, the bushes are trimmed and the yard is inviting. Remember the backyard too. One of the biggest factors buyers use in choosing a house are the patio or deck. Don’t be afraid to repaint if it’s chipping. You’ll get the cost back when it sells. Don’t skimp on the paint: It’s not just the exterior that needs painting, but the interior as well. Be sure to keep to neutral colors. That doesn’t mean every room has to be boring or plain white. Some shades of gray, blue or even purple fall into the neutral range. Depersonalize: This is the most overlooked step of staging. Buyers will have an easier time imagining their new lives in the home if they are not looking at pictures and items that make the house feel

34

SW Lake Lifestyle | March 2016

like yours. You need to make the house warm and inviting so it says “Welcome Home” to the prospective buyers as they come in or view the photos. Declutter: This is the most important step in staging your home. You’re planning on moving anyway, so why not start packing up those things now? You don’t want potential buyers to think you’re messy, but more importantly it will make the house appear bigger. The less clutter you have the more space your house will project. These tips are just the start of staging a beautiful home to sell. Your real estate agent should give you a personalized list of ideas and suggestions on a walk through before you list your home. This will make your pictures look great and help you sell your home faster. Helen Oliveri is a 12-year real estate professional who loves our community and helping clients achieve their real estate goals is her priority. March Is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Awareness Month

Deep Vein Thrombosis In 2003, more than 70 public health organizations gathered in Washington D.C. to discuss the prevention of blood clots. They then formed the Coalition to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), and marked March as an annual month to improve the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of this venous disease and support research to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from blood clots. Deep Vein Thrombosis is a venous disease in which a blood clot forms in the vein system deep inside the body, typically the leg. If undiagnosed, the thrombosis may eventually block the entire vein and threaten the health of the leg; or a piece of the blockage (called an embolism) may break off and travel to the lung. A pulmonary embolism can lead to chest pain, difficulty breathing, or even death. Symptoms of DVT, like pain and swelling, recurring leg cramps, restless leg syndrome, can resemble those of Varicose Veins and, like Varicose Veins, can be caused by a number of factors like heredity, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, or trauma.

Seeking Relief from a Board Certified Vein Specialist At Illinois Vein Specialists, we care just as much about the medicine and the specialized practice of Phlebology (the treatment of vein and lymphatic disease) as we do our patients. We focus only on treating varicose and spider veins and treat patients in Buffalo Grove, Cary, Elgin, Algonquin, Palatine, Vernon Hills, Crystal Lake, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich, Fox River Grove, Mundelein, Grayslake, Wauconda, Chicago, and all areas of Barrington, Illinois. We know that patients come to us most often from satisfied patient referrals, but we encourage you to do your own homework and ask around. In the end no matter where you live or who you decide to have treat your varicose or spider veins, find someone who focuses only on diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins — find a Board Certified Venous and Lymphatic physician.

In order to obtain a diagnosis, you should consult a Board Certified Venous & Lymphatic Doctor like Dr. Stephen Rivard and Dr. Susan Kanehann at Illinois Vein Specialists. The practice opened in 2009 and has a staff of a dozen— physicians, medical technicians, ultrasound specialists and administrative personnel, backed by state-of-the-art medical equipment and systems. Since opening, we have helped over 10,000 patients from the Chicagoland area and have developed a reputation as an exemplar, a Venous and Lymphatic Center of Excellence.
