APRIL 2016
"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything." - William Shakespeare -
A
side from my favorite quote, above, I realized that I know very little about the month of April. I'd like to share with you some interesting facts I found in an online search: • There is uncertainty of how this month got its name: it has been suggested that it may come from Roman word 'Aprilis' meaning 'to open', or it may come from Aphrodite, the Greek name for the goddess of love. • Anglo-Saxons called the month Eostre monath or Eastremonath. The name of the Christian Festival of Easter comes from this word. • It is the fourth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and is one of four months to have 30 days. • The month was originally the second month of the Roman calendar until King Numa Pompilius added January and February in around 713bc.

What To Look For In A
Venous & Lymphatic Physician Experience Matters
Seeking Relief from a Board Certified Vein Specialist
There are currently more than 80 million people suffering from venous disease in the United States alone. Vein diseases like varicose and spider veins are often thought of as solely cosmetic concerns, but the truth is that without treatment they can lead to continued side effects and severe problems. Many different types of physicians now offer treatment for vein diseases, but unless a doctor meets certain qualifications, their patients seeking relief are at risk for receiving inadequate treatment. A patient’s best option is to consult a vein expert, a Board Certified venous & lymphatic physician with experience in ultrasonography. Board Certification for venous and lymphatic medicine comes directly from the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM). This certification ensures that a physician has undergone specialized training to identify the root causes of an individual patient’s vein disease, properly diagnose their symptoms, and perform the most effective procedures based on their individual circumstances. Additional certification in ultrasonography is important because it means they have been properly trained and certified to perform a Doppler Duplex ultrasound, the key diagnostic tool used to diagnose vein disease.
At Illinois Vein Specialists, we care just as much about the medicine and the specialized practice of Phlebology (the treatment of vein and lymphatic disease) as we do our patients. We focus only on treating varicose and spider veins and treat patients from Buffalo Grove, Cary, Elgin, Algonquin, Palatine, Vernon Hills, Crystal Lake, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich, Fox River Grove, Mundelein, Grayslake, Wauconda, Chicago, and all areas of Barrington, Illinois. We understand that when you choose a doctor you want to go to someone you know, like and trust, and honestly so do we. We know that patients come to us most often from satisfied patient referrals, but we encourage you to do your own homework and ask around. In the end no matter where you live or who you decide to have treat your varicose or spider veins find someone who focuses only on diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins — find a Board Certified Venous and Lymphatic physician.
Patients seeking treatment for vein disease should also look into the number of successful treatments a physician has performed, which treatments they offer, and testimonials from their patients. These credentials signify a physician's extensive knowledge and specialized skills in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease. If you find yourself experiencing symptoms of varicose or spider veins, why go to anyone else?

Renovate & Refine Exterior Doors

HOME GREEN HOME EASY ECOFRIENDLY FIXES
ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI
W
e all know about turning off the water while brushing your teeth, changing to energy efficient light bulbs, recycling and reusing. Your house can go green as well. Living in an Eco-friendly home reduces your carbon footprint, helps sustain our natural resources, and saves money on your energy bills. Here are five ways to make your house a home Mother Earth would be proud of! 1. Exterior Doors - Choosing the right exterior door for a home should be a carefully thought-out decision. When selecting a door, you should first consider its energy performance rating. This score rates how well each door preserves energy in your home by trapping heat or cool air inside. Using this score to help you find your ideal door can also narrow down your options to find an exterior door that best matches your taste, needs and wants. 2. Skylights - Skylights are often a feature that enters homeowners' mind when they think of improving their homes' energy efficiency. Skylights have many benefits, which makes them ideal for any home. Skylights improve houses' heating, lighting, and ventilation. It is important to note that if you are considering placing skylights in your home, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends they be no larger than five percent of the floor area in rooms with several windows and 15 percent of the floor area in rooms with minimal windows.
Window Treatments

3. Window Treatments - Boring curtains do more than drive your spouse crazy; they can actually help reduce energy costs in your home. By being specific in your choice of window treatments, you can reduce heat loss or keep cool air inside your home. Many factors determine window treatments' energy efficiency. For example, the type of material and color of the treatment are significant, along with how it opens and closes. 4. Fans - Installing fans throughout your home is an easy way to keep it cool and save you money that you would spend on air conditioning. Ceiling fans come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and styles to match the interior of any home design without looking out of place. 5. Bathroom and Kitchen Fixtures - When you purchase the appliances and the fixtures for your bathrooms and kitchen, consider each one's Energy-Star rating. Buying items with high Energy-Star ratings can save you a substantial amount of money each year. You can find Energy-Star ratings for most fixtures. It's important for all of us to take care of where we live, and this includes the planet as well as our homes. Going green will pay for itself in the lower utility bills as well as helping the planet for future generations. Recovering Your Best You
THE BENEFITS OF REHAB THERAPY ARTICLE LEANNA BAHWELL
“R
ehabilitation therapy is described as the therapeutic, healing treatment that a patient receives after any kind of illness or injury.” The severity of the patient condition may vary, but the goals are always the same: to help patients get back to or as close to the prior level of functional as possible. Rehabilitation involves a plan of care with very individualized, obtainable goals developed by therapists with patient input. Ultimately, for success with a rehab program, commitment is required from both the patient and the multi-disciplinary team. Whether recovering from a stroke, car accident, or knee replacement surgery, there would likely be many different types of therapies involved with the case. Physical therapy (PT) involves things like bed mobility, transfer, ambulation, stair, and balance training. PT also does a lot of work in strengthening and range of motion of the lower extremities. Occupational therapy (OT) involves activities of daily living (ADLs) like feeding, grooming, hygiene, dressing, toileting, and bathing. OT also does a lot of work in strengthening and range of motion of the upper extremities. Speech therapy (ST) involves mainly training in improving either cognition and/or swallowing. Respiratory therapy (RT) involves improving breathing and endurance through pulmonary rehabilitation which may include supplemental oxygen use to nebulizer treatments. Rehab therapists work jointly on a patient’s case to manage an effective rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation therapy can take place in many types of settings, but usually follows this path of care: acute hospital therapy, in-patient rehab 14
SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2016
therapy, home health therapy, and outpatient clinic therapy. The length of time at each level is dependent upon the severity of condition, rate of healing, medical stability, and progress within the therapy plan of care. For some, rehabilitation therapy may only last weeks, but for some others to the full course of therapy could take months to years. Rehab therapists also play a role in recommending any necessary adaptations or modifications to allow patients to compensate for limitations. For example, physical therapists may recommend an assistive device like a walker to allow a patient to walk with less assistance. Or, an occupational therapist might recommend that grab bars be installed in a patient bathroom to ensure safety with showering. Rehab therapy plays a vital role in setting patients up for future success even after they are discharged from therapy services. As noted, there are many different facets to rehabilitation therapy and many benefits that can be gleaned from the process. In general, patients that have participated in a rehab program leave it with improved health, strength, movement, and safety. In addition, patients graduate with less pain and more confidence. Rehabilitation therapy has been proven through research and outcomes to impact patients’ lives in a positive way in which individuals can maximize the potential to live their lives to the fullest. THE ROAD MOST TRAVELED Great Barrier Reef, Austraila
Following the basic rules of ecotourism can be as easy as following a well-marked trail—because on the well-marked trail is where you should be. Always follow designated trails and resist the urge to explore the forest. Do not disturb animals, plants or their natural habitats, and hopefully, they will not disturb you in return. Consider each ecological wonder a special aquarium where you should not “tap the glass”. CONTINUED >
A
s travelers reach the far corners of the world, they are faced with the responsibility to preserve the fragile environments they visit. The idea of responsible travel is called ecotourism and is conscientious travel to protect the environment and nourish its cultures. By focusing on the impact of our actions and using a little travel sense, travelers can make the right decisions to affect positively the world around them. To start eco-traveling, please follow these guidelines compiled by ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents).
Schooner Cove, Tofino, British Columbia
RESPECT OUR FRAGILE PLANET
Sure the planet feels solid beneath our feet, yet the Earth's ecosystem which we stand next to in pictures is a fragile infrastructure dependent on balanced and cyclical nurturing.Think of it as the Earth's hair. It looks great now, but the more we tread on it, the messier it becomes, until one day the planet wakes up completely bald. Unless we combine our efforts to help in its preservation, the unique and beautiful destinations we visit may not be here for future generations to enjoy.
Sigiriya rock fortress, Sri Lanka
TAKE ONLY PHOTOS, LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS
These two simple phrases sum up the heart of eco-tourism. Do not leave litter of any kind, and do not take any souvenirs from historical sites and natural areas. In some instances, like taking a piece of the Great Barrier Reef, it is a crime. In the wilderness never disturb anything that you can avoid disturbing. Leave all the pretty rocks where they are; your desk will survive without another paperweight. The "it's only one rock" attitude goes out the window when a million people each take one rock from one forest. April 2016 | SW Lake Lifestyle

EDUCATION IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE
Educate yourself about the geography, customs and manners of the region you plan to visit. The invasion of different values can damage a culture more than a bulldozer in some regards. Get to know the culture before you arrive and know which of your actions or standards may not be appropriate.Tourism provides a positive boost to local people. Attending local events encourages indigenous pride and cultural heritage, enabling many traditions to be preserved. These traditions present the traveler with an immersion experience and a local perspective of the destination better than any text or postcard can provide. R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Respect the privacy of others and always ask before photographing people. Some Australian aborigines believe that photographs steal their souls. While you may not believe this to be true, respect their beliefs, slide the camera back into your backpack.

ECO-SOUVENIRS
Souvenirs are a vital part of every trip, special for their uniqueness and direct mental link to a fabulous vacation memory. As a concerned eco-tourist, do not buy products made from endangered plants or animals, such as ivory, tortoise shell, animal skins and feathers. Purchase souvenirs from local artists to keep cultural traditions alive. Dine in locally owned restaurants, exploring the gastronomic scenery is just as important as visiting the main attractions of a destination. ECO-FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS
The easiest ecologically saving action to undertake is to support conservation-oriented organizations already working to preserve the environment. Our travel agency tries to select responsible tour operators and guides whose practices are based on sound eco-conscious beliefs. Maintain an eco-friendly attitude when choosing destinations to visit. IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL
Globetrotting with the world in mind provides a more satisfying way to travel; challenging you to learn about the places and people you visit and help sustain their fragile environments, economies, and cultures. Through increased awareness and an earnest desire to help protect natural and cultural resources for the good of the planet—and for the generations yet to explore—you can trek to the four corners with a positive impact. Trends MODERN
IN LANDSCAPING
Low Maintenance Environments + Outdoor Living Areas ARTICLE JULIE JOYCE PHOTOGRAPHY BARN NURSERY
20
SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2016
T
here is only one constant when it comes to the landscape, which is that your landscape is always changing. Mother Nature ushers in four seasons of blooms, growth, and color but homeowners also share responsibility for changes in the landscape. Both structurally and seasonally, homeowners express their personality and lifestyle through outdoor living spaces. Maintaining the value of your home by creating great curb appeal and modernizing your outdoor living space is just as important as indoor remodeling and home maintenance. The increased interest in outdoor rooms and kitchens, native plants and low-maintenance landscaping all exist within the larger scope of outdoor living. Let's take a look at the two hottest trends in landscaping for 2016.
The Return of Natural Materials THE RETURN OF NATURAL MATERIALS
The return of natural materials includes plants, stone, and environmental solutions. For years, the use of pavers that "mimicked" the look of natural stone was a popular choice for hardscapes. Recently, homeowners and designers are returning to natural stone. There are many benefits to pavers but in the end, one cannot replicate what Mother Nature has created on her own. Patterned bluestone, and irregular flagstone, and Valders limestone are all gorgeous natural stones with amazing color variations easily utilized in patios, walkways, and walls. Natural stone also has the benefit of being low maintenance and does not fade over time like pavers can. In the vein of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" comes the trend of incorporating reclaimed products. Chicago street pavers are a hot commodity and can be used to great effect in the landscape. When it comes to plants, consumers have expressed interest in native plants. However, what we find they are truly looking for is a blend of plants that are low maintenance, easy to grow, and offer an abundance of color throughout the landscape. The New German style of gardening and planting re-creates a natural or prairie look in the landscape and is becoming a more frequent request of homeowners. This style is heavy on perennials, but can include native and non-native shrubs and even annuals. It is a planting style based more on plant ecology than aesthetics, created with low maintenance plantings that, once established, require little to no supplemental water, little mulch and little to no pesticides. It includes mixed species in plant "communities" with a high concentration of clumping grasses, arranged in drifts or repeating swatches to create rhythm and movement in the landscape. This style hits most of the landscape goals of today's homeowners: environmental, colorful, beautiful and low-maintenance. CONTINUED >

MODERN TRENDS IN LANDSCAPING (CON TI N U ED)
Modern Outdoor Lounge MODERN OUTDOOR LOUNGE
Perhaps the biggest trend in landscaping is the emergence of the outdoor living area. Think beyond a fire pit or outdoor grill and imagine a true outdoor lounge. These pseudo-buildings mean the outdoor parties don't have to move indoors for winter. By including a roof-style covering to provide shade and protect revelers from the elements, and with the addition of fans and heaters, families can host friends and neighbors almost year-round in a comfortable atmosphere. Tom Kusmerz, VP of The Barn Nursery says, "Customers in Northern Illinois are spending time on websites like Houzz or watching design shows on HGTV. They see how homeowners enjoy outdoor living in warmer clients. They come to us to replicate these rooms in a way that works for our climate while communicating the look and feel of California or coastal homes."
22
SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2016
This trend continues to expand and can be completed in phases. Start with a patio designed to suit the hosting needs of your family. Include an element of light and warmth. The cozy warmth of an outdoor stone fireplace, gas tiki torches, landscape lighting or patio heaters is a great place to start. These elements alone will create an atmosphere of comfort and fun in the backyard.

The Gift of Local boy thrives after life-saving liver transplant

S
ix-year-old Tyler Bonelli-Schultz knows how to make his parents laugh. And go in for a layup. And tattle on his big brother. He arrived as many children do—born into a loving family who looked forward to his birth with joyful anticipation. But looking into his icy-blue newborn eyes, no one could have guessed how hard he would have to fight for a shot at life. A touch of jaundice kept baby Tyler in the hospital for a couple of extra days, but he was an otherwise healthy newborn. He was sent home to Hawthorn Woods, joining his brother Zachary, who was two, under the loving care of his parents, Jennifer Schultz & Erika Bonelli. Because of his jaundice at birth, baby Tyler was monitored with a blood draw a few days after his birth. Just hours after the test, a
dreadful call came from the doctor. Tyler's liver was not working right. "They told us to pack a bag and head directly to the ER" at Children's Memorial Hospital (now known as Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital), Erika said. "And that's where we spent the next 8 or 9 straight hours." Newborn Tyler had more blood work, ultrasounds, and other scans to eliminate cancer, tumors, and other possible diseases. Days later, the worried parents consulted a specialist in pediatric liver disorders. "He kissed our baby, handed him back to us, and said ‘Don't worry. We think he's going to grow out of this,'" Jennifer said. Tyler's parents celebrated. Even though there was more monitoring ahead, they believed he was on the upswing.
Their confidence quickly waned over the next few weeks at home. Tyler constantly ate yet was fussy all the time. He cried for hours and would scream whenever they strapped him into his car seat. His liver function tests were not getting better, and they started to feel a firm spot in his belly. Multiple biopsies and tests later, the doctors had ruled out many liver diseases yet could not find solid answers about Tyler's condition. "We felt confident in the care Tyler was receiving—we knew we had the best doctors, and that they were sharing Tyler's case with other colleagues," Jennifer said. Yet no one had the answers they so desperately sought. "Every week that passed, things seemed bleaker and bleaker. He was more distended, more miserable," said Erika. Eventually, the doctors made it clear that Tyler's liver was CONTINUED >

THE GIFT OF LIFE (CON TI N U ED)
not "kicking in" as they hoped it might. On August 17, 2010, the almostsix-month-old was evaluated for a transplant. "I'll never forget that day," Jennifer said. "I could see he wasn't ‘there with us' as they were drawing his blood," she said. "He passed out; they called a Code Blue, and about 15 doctors appeared. Sirens were going off, and they loaded the two of us onto a gurney, and we were flying through the halls of the hospital," she said. "It was crazy." At that point, Tyler's iron levels were deadly low. His liver was not processing anything, nor was it draining toxins from his blood. Because of his worsening condition, Tyler shot up to #2 on the Midwest region's transplant waiting list. "Many people don't know that the liver regenerates and that a living donor can give part of their liver for a patient who needs one. It's called a split liver donation," Jennifer said. "I was a match for his blood type, and I was ready to go," she said. In the meantime, less than two weeks after he was evaluated, a donor liver that was a match for Tyler became available. Tyler received a part of that adult donor's liver in a ten-hour transplant surgery on August 30, 2010, and made a remarkable recovery. "Within days his color completely changed and we watched him get better day by day," Jennifer said. A complication arose a week after his transplant surgery in the form of a clogged bile duct, which the surgeons were able to repair. Tyler recovered steadily after that and was able to come home in October. In the coming weeks and months, the Bonelli-Schultz family started to think more about the amazing gift Tyler's organ donor had given them. Privacy laws protect families in organ donation situations, so they began working with the transplant coordinator to reach out to the donor's bereaved family. "We wanted to respect their grieving process, and perhaps help a little by sharing our gratitude and the joy that Tyler has brought to our family," Jennifer said. Two months later, they received an envelope in their mailbox—a letter from the donor's family, acknowledging their letter. "We cried a lot that day," she said. "That donor is our hero." These days Tyler is living life like any sixyear-old—playing sports, learning to read, jumping in mud puddles. His doctor's keep a close watch on his health, and he will always take anti-rejection drugs. But he is thriving, learning and growing. Tyler is free to live, thanks to the generous gift of a stranger. For more information about organ donation, visit GiftOfHope.org.

As an infant, Tyler had rapid progressive cholestatic liver disease. He received the left lobe of a donor liver, and another patient received the right lobe.

ll along I considered hostas the lazy gardener’s hero. These attractive, leafy plants thrive in the shade where many other pretty things will not. They sprout flowers now and then, and best of all, they come back every year. Plant once, kick back forever, I thought. I was so buzzed by the idea this elegant ground cover would reappear every spring. I would look like a pro, yet all I had to do was maybe throw in a little fertilizer, and then toss enough water their way. That was only if it didn’t rain enough. Each spring, as the shade took over my back and side yards, I planted even more hostas. I discovered varieties with pretty patterns, and some solid ones with blueish or chartreuse tints. Some boasted interesting textures. Nature’s corduroy! (A description I assume master gardeners use.) No matter what type I selected, these beauties punctuated my yard with an air of paradise. Until… Wabbits. Last year, the deceptively cute furry creatures waged a war with me. The stole my easy hosta lifestyle. Imagine my shock the first time I approached my favorite original plant—the monster bloomer--only to see its massive outer leaves chomped to shreds. “Noooo, not my big blue floppy Dumbo ear!” (That’s the scientific horticultural term.) I dropped my hose and ran to the newer purchases on the side of the house, the ones I doggedly searched for in way too many nurseries. I had become picky about a certain crisp, creamy edged pattern on one particular variety, and I had to have it. (This one is known in the botanical world as The Cool Ones That Cost More.) My newbie plant$ were chewed down to the stems, like they were masquerading as chives. I hurried back indoors, revved up my

search engine and found two recommended solutions: chicken wire or repellant spray. Chicken wire was out, for aesthetic reasons. Not to mention the effort. Imagine? But squirting a bottle of environmentally friendly stuff upon graceful leaves seemed simple enough. According to the directions, I just had to walk around, coat my hostas with a fine mist, and laugh maniacally at the little hungry fur balls sharpening their teeth beneath the bushes. “Go try some dandelions, you picky little hipsters!” Despite this battle plan, there were a few problems. The main one being I was late to the boxing match. Nothing is more disheartening than dousing an invisible layer of protection on a half-destroyed garden. If only I had paid attention the previous week, before word got out on nature’s yelp reviews. However, the bigger glitch was me. Once I began spraying this “liquid chicken wire,” I was overcome. What was that…smell? I was hoping for something undetectable to humans, like a dog whistle, but for the nose. Or a scent similar to mosquito-repelling citronella, which is somewhat pleasant. But Eau de No Bunny? Even a Beatrix Potter plush toy would run away from its foul mist. Here’s the most delicate, glossy magazine way to describe my take on the scent: gentle pre-dawn wafts from the dampened streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter…the morning after Mardi Gras. That’s right: bottled hurl. So what’s this amateur gardener’s overall take on the liquid solution? It seemed to offer a total smack down on the problem. The stuff kept me out of the yard, so I didn’t even care if the hostas were there or not.
