What To Look For In A
Venous & Lymphatic Physician Experience Matters
Seeking Relief from a Board Certified Vein Specialist
There are currently more than 80 million people suffering from venous disease in the United States alone. Vein diseases like varicose and spider veins are often thought of as solely cosmetic concerns, but the truth is that without treatment they can lead to continued side effects and severe problems. Many different types of physicians now offer treatment for vein diseases, but unless a doctor meets certain qualifications, their patients seeking relief are at risk for receiving inadequate treatment. A patient’s best option is to consult a vein expert, a Board Certified venous & lymphatic physician with experience in ultrasonography. Board Certification for venous and lymphatic medicine comes directly from the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM). This certification ensures that a physician has undergone specialized training to identify the root causes of an individual patient’s vein disease, properly diagnose their symptoms, and perform the most effective procedures based on their individual circumstances. Additional certification in ultrasonography is important because it means they have been properly trained and certified to perform a Doppler Duplex ultrasound, the key diagnostic tool used to diagnose vein disease.
At Illinois Vein Specialists, we care just as much about the medicine and the specialized practice of Phlebology (the treatment of vein and lymphatic disease) as we do our patients. We focus only on treating varicose and spider veins and treat patients from Buffalo Grove, Cary, Elgin, Algonquin, Palatine, Vernon Hills, Crystal Lake, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich, Fox River Grove, Mundelein, Grayslake, Wauconda, Chicago, and all areas of Barrington, Illinois. We understand that when you choose a doctor you want to go to someone you know, like and trust, and honestly so do we. We know that patients come to us most often from satisfied patient referrals, but we encourage you to do your own homework and ask around. In the end no matter where you live or who you decide to have treat your varicose or spider veins find someone who focuses only on diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins — find a Board Certified Venous and Lymphatic physician.
Patients seeking treatment for vein disease should also look into the number of successful treatments a physician has performed, which treatments they offer, and testimonials from their patients. These credentials signify a physician's extensive knowledge and specialized skills in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease. If you find yourself experiencing symptoms of varicose or spider veins, why go to anyone else?

I'm a marketing consultant and writer, so I do most of my work at home but I do sometimes have to go to different sites for work. NATIVE OR TRANSPLANTED TO THE AREA?
Transplant.Transplant, big time! I was born in Chicago and have lived there all my life until two years ago when we moved to Kildeer. WHAT’S ON THE FLOOR OF YOUR CAR RIGHT NOW?
Honestly, random toys, a small zoo of stuffed animals and rogue snacks. WHAT’S THE STRANGEST THING IN YOUR PURSE RIGHT NOW?
Besides a few emergency diapers, wipes and everything under the sun, I’d say rocks. My son collects them and I find them everywhere. FAVORITE PAMPER YOURSELF OR SPLURGE ITEM? WHERE?
A bubble bath at home. GUILTIEST FOOD PLEASURE?
Chocolate. I need to eat some every day. TITLE OF A BOOK ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE?

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU?
Kind, resourceful and can never get through the day without something nutty happening. ORGANIZATION THAT GETS MOST OF YOUR VOLUNTEER TIME?
I feel like we are all in this together, so I try to help out when I can. I volunteer in my neighborhood, community and quite a bit my son's elementary school. Currently, I'm searching for a mother’s charity to support with a portion of the proceeds of my new book. 16

Citizens for Conservation's 20th Annual Native Plant Sale ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY CFC
T
his year marks Citizens for Conservation’s 20th Annual Native Plant Sale! We’re offering many new forbs, trees, shrubs, grasses and ferns this year as well as our new option to purchase gift certificates for family, friends and business acquaintances. All of our plants are free of neonicotinoid pesticides. Members of Citizens for Conservation receive a 10% discount on their order. Interested in becoming a member? Visit the CitizensForConservation.org website for membership information. Like last year, the CFC is discounting all of the milkweed varieties as an incentive to help the desperate monarch butterfly population. It looks like efforts across North America are working but there is still need to continue to provide this essential plant to support monarch populations and their migrations. Monarch butterflies simply cannot survive without milkweed. DETAILS OF THE CFCS 20TH ANNUAL NATIVE PLANT SALE:
• The public sale will be Saturday and Sunday, May 7 & 8, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • The pre-order pick-up date and sale for members of Citizens for Conservation will be Friday, May 6 from 11a.m. – 6 p.m. • The public sale and pick-up location will be the same as last year, at the “Barns” area of Good Shepherd Hospital, across from CFC Headquarters, 459 W. Hwy 22, Lake Barrington, IL 60010 Please don’t hesitate to the CFC Headquarters if you have any questions at 847.382.SAVE Thank you for helping CFC accomplish its mission of Saving Living Space for Living Things!

FACT:
A NOTE FROM THE CFC: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Native plant knowledge is helpful, but not necessary, and new volunteers are warmly welcomed. If you've volunteered in the past, you know your efforts are important and appreciated. Whether you can devote a few hours or a few days, we truly hope to see you all!
High-quality after school programs are linked to improvement in work habits.
Hundreds of native species will be available again this year, and we need volunteer help to: • Set up our sales site on the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital campus, just across the road from CFC's headquarters • Fill and double-check pre-sale orders • Assist customers • Help grow a key CFC event that encourages the planting of native species throughout the region We have a week's worth of opportunities: • Monday, May 2-Thursday, May 5: We'll receive deliveries, set up equipment, and assemble pre-sale plant orders. (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) • Friday, May 6: We'll assist customers picking up their pre-sale orders and CFC members who have come to shop. (7:45 a.m. - 6 p.m.) • Saturday, May 7-Sunday, May 8: We'll assist customers with plant selections and sales. (7:45 a.m. - 4 p.m.) • Monday, May 9: We'll return equipment and remaining plants to CFC headquarters. (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.) If you are interested in volunteering, please email Julie.Zuidema@ CitizensForConservation.org.

Care
Retirement
Community, sometimes called a CCRC, is a tiered approach to the aging process, accommodating residents’ changing needs. CCRCs generally feature a combination of independent living apartments, assisted living, memory support care and nursing care. offering a continuum of care for residents.

CONTINUING CARE (CON TI N U ED)
One of the key attractions of CCRCs is the range of healthcare and supportive or assistive services that the establishment is able to provide within the limits of the basic contract. These may include nursing, social work, physician care and various therapies for residents. CCRC can also provide emergency response systems, wellness programs, assistance with insurance claims and routine health assessments. Contract fees may cover housekeeping and laundry services and a certain number of meals served in dining facilities. While the guarantee of basic healthcare and amenities of senior living are important, most CCRCs aim to go beyond the basics to offer a high degree of comfort and a wide selection of daily activities. A CCRC campus is typically located in peaceful and hospitable surroundings. They are intended to be upscale communities set apart in choice locations that afford a great deal of privacy and convenience. Within most communities resident are likely to find a full range of social and physical activities from dining and dancing to swimming and golf. Moving to a CCRC is a personal decision that should be based on anticipated or potential future care needs as well as current needs. The business structure of a CCRC is complex and may require a significant financial commitment from the resident or family. It is wise to have an attorney review any contract before you sign it even if you’re confident that you understand the terms. The contract may be for either rental or purchase and the money invested in the CCRC may or may not be refundable. Be sure you know in advance what will happen to the residential space once it is no longer needed by your loved one. Linda Smith writing for Lutheran Home of Arlington Heights. Planning a Destination Family Reunion ARTICLE SUE SHIMKUS
24
SW Lake Lifestyle | May 2016
W
hat better way to gather loved ones than at a family reunion? Sue Shimkus, owner of Lake Zurich Travel, offers these suggestions:
START PLANNING EARLY
Planning a family reunion can become complicated, especially a large reunion involving lots of people. Experienced reunion planners recommend that families begin planning a year in advance or more. • Allow time for your guests to plan. Give them enough advance notice to adjust their own schedules in order to attend. If you are planning a reunion that involves traveling long distances, or an adventure like a cruise or a trip out of the country, many family members may need time to save money and make special arrangements for extended leave from work. • Be prepared for guests who require special consideration. Everyone has different needs and it is important to the success of your event to be aware of those needs and have adequate time to plan accordingly. Disabled guests may need special equipment or accommodations. Others may need to arrange for pet care. Whatever the circumstances, leave yourself enough time to ensure suitable arrangements can be made to accommodate everyone. SELECT A DATE AND STICK WITH IT
• Picking a date that works for everyone can be one of the most difficult - but one of the most important - steps in planning a family reunion. • Avoid the obvious busy times of the year. Try not to schedule your family reunion on major holidays, or during prom and graduation season. • Ask for suggestions and select a date that will work for everyone. • Communicate plans to host a family reunion far enough in advance that attendees will be able to avoid conflicting events. • Avoid changing the date. Once you announce the date to family members, they will immediately begin planning other activities around it. Changing the date mid-stream, even once, will affect everyone and some guests may be forced to cancel. COMMUNICATE EARLY AND OFTEN
By communicating your plans to organize a family reunion early, your guests will have adequate time to plan to attend, and you can generate interest in catching up with family and creating new family memories at the reunion. Distribute a newsletter, use email, or create a Family Reunion website or social media site to keep guests interested and involved. Solicit ideas from guests, allow family members the opportunity to submit ideas for planned activities, venues and menu options.

Family reunions are unique in that they can involve people from all over the world, each with different interests. Your guests may span up to four generations and it is important to consider ages and physical limitations when planning activities. Grandparents may not want to participate in activities like scuba diving or water-skiing. Likewise, children may not enjoy ballroom dancing or a mahjong tournament. • Consider holding the family reunion on a cruise ship or at an all-inclusive resort. Each offers entertainment options for every generation and can take much of the stress out of planning activities around varying interests. • Ask your guests. Since they will likely have different interests, you will be better able to plan activities if you know what they enjoy doing. • Choose a venue that is large enough to accommodate activities for everyone and offers a variety of things to do. BE SURE TO ENJOY YOUR OWN PARTY
The best reward for organizing a large get-together is being able to enjoy the day when it arrives. One way to ensure you have time to enjoy the reunion is to recruit willing family members to take care of last minute details. You will be surprised how much help is available if you just ask! Food & Wine
Southern Belle's
Pancake House NOW OPEN IN BARRINGTON ARTICLE PATRICIA MOYER
O
pening its fourth location and first in the northwest suburbs, Southern Belle's Pancake House announced its grand opening at 210 S. Cook Street in Barrington. The 145-seat restaurant is open from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. and serves its signature pancakes, omelets, layered skillets, sandwiches, wraps, fresh juices and smoothies according to Southern Belles owner, Steve Fotos. During seasonal months, an additional 50 seats are available at the front and rear patios. Leading the helm on the food side of the operation is famed head chef Frank Georgacopoulos, formerly from Meli Café & Juice Bar in downtown Chicago. A graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, Georgacopoulos developed the menu for the original Meli Café in Greektown and managed the food operation for Meli’s three locations since 2006. Georgacopoulos’ breakfast and lunch creations were frequently featured on WLS-TV’s “Hungry Hound,” WGN News’ “Lunch Break,” and The Food Channel’s “Eat Travel Rock.” “I courted Frank for over a year because of his reputation in creating unique and fresh menu items of the highest quality that were made from scratch with pure ingredients,” said Fotos. In addition to its fresh breakfast and lunch entrees, Southern Belles makes its own jam and granola along with freshly squeezed juices on site. Since the soft opening earlier in March, popular menu items are the egg skillets, avocado toast, oversized pancakes, crunchy kale

salad with quinoa, toasted almonds, and fresh blueberries, and the mahi mahi tacos. Most menu items can be prepared gluten free and several vegan options are available. The restaurant includes a 15-foot juice bar which serves smoothies, freshly squeezed juices, coffee and cappuccinos. “The juice bar is open for grab and go purchases from students on their way to school or commuters to the nearby Barrington train station,” said Georgacopoulos. The restaurant features a number of improvements including southern-themed décor with period antiques and stained glass salvaged from a 140-year old Aurora church destroyed by fire in 1986. The restaurant offers catering packages and can host private parties, showers and events after closing hours.

Meet Frank Georgacopoulos, Head Chef at Southern Belles of Barrington Frank Georgacopoulos, dubbed the “Surgeon of Sunrise” in a Chicago Sun-Times article, had dreams and aspirations of going into medicine. Graduating from the University of Illinois with degrees in Biology and Chemistry he put himself through school working in family restaurants. Frank quickly realized that as much as he loved science he could not see himself in the blue scrubs of an E.R. room. He fell in love with the ins and outs of the restaurant world. It was this new found passion that made him enroll in the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. He graduated with honors from their heralded Le Cordon Bleu program. Upon graduation, Frank began taking over the kitchens of his family-owned suburban restaurants. Loaded with a passion for learning and experimenting, he began to set his sights on breakfast. He later decided to leave the suburbs and come into the city and become involved in a new project in 2005. A vacant space on the corner of Halsted and Jackson was to be the new spot for a breakfast place like none other. Working with owners Niko Karabelas and Yianni Theoharis, Frank developed the concept that would begin the revitalization of the breakfast community. Pure ingredients, organic eggs, espresso bars, fresh squeezed juices, homemade marmalades, homemade ketchup, everything from scratch were foreign terms in the breakfast world. But the ownership and Frank felt that someone had to give breakfast the respect it deserves, it is the most important meal of the day. From

this passion and dedication Meli Café & Juice Bar was born in August of 2006. Since that time in December of 2010 a second location Meli on Grand opened continuing the breakfast trend. And continuing in their success, Meli on Dearborn opened in December 2013 offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the fall of 2015, Frank joined forces with Southern Belles to create newly designed menus for the company’s new Barrington breakfast and lunch restaurant and to oversee the food operations. He is insistent on creating and serving made-from scratch food items with fresh, seasonal ingredients. He has a passion for breakfast and strives to continue to transform the new era of the breakfast and lunch culinary concept.

I Am Mom Parting Thoughts
WORDS CATHY SUE CARPENTER
I am food, water and shelter. I am warmth and comfort. I am a jungle gym, a swing, a slide and a crazy, carnival ride. I am play, I am fun, I am a smile. I am happiness and joy. I am a hug, a cuddle and snuggle. I am sadness, hurt and anger. I am a punching bag and a whipping post. I am a tissue and the tears. I absorb all the fears. I am a crafter, coloring artist, finger painter, and googly eye gluer. I am the teacher and a student. I am the cleaning crew. I am a laundress but not a seamstress, I have to send that stuff out. I am chef and a short order cook. I am the butcher, the baker and the freaking candlestick maker. I am the kisser of boo boos, BAND-aid®-applier, and ice-pack holder. Make everything okayer. I am a nose-picker, face-cleaner, hair-smoother and butt- wiper extraordinaire. I am a manicurist, a pedicurist, and giver of baths. I am a hair washer, ear cleaner, tooth brusher, and rash inspector. I am a stylist and personal shopper too. I am the good guy and the bad guy. I am the cop and a criminal. I am the attorney, jury, and I am the judge. I am the warden and a cell mate. I am a researcher, expert and advocate. I am the doctor AND the nurse. I am the general manager and mechanic. I am the groundskeeper, pool boy and maid service. I am the plumber and Mrs. Fix-it. Did I mention I am the cleaning crew? I am the president and the secretary. I am the whole marketing team. I am Santa, the Easter Bunny and even the Tooth Fairy. I am Cupid and a little, green Leprechaun. I am Halloween and I can be scary. I am a cowboy, cat wrangler, and rodeo clown. I chase away the bulls, when you are down. I am the night. I am a blanket, a pillow AND a bed. I am a shoulder for your sleepy head. I am a beddy-time story reader, PJ putter onner, tooth brusher, blanket tucker and monster slayer. I sneak into bedrooms to check, kiss, snuggle, re-tuck, apply ointments, and medicines. I fluff pillows, pick up laundry, fill humidifiers, step on your toys, and curse in silence. I am the watcher, the protector, the worrier, the consoler, and make surer you are still breathing. I am the day. I am the official waker-upper. I am the milk warmer, coffee maker, breakfast-getter, outfit putter-onner and shoe finder. I am the motivator, get everyone out of the houseinator. I am the perpetual nag for everything. I am a parrot who repeats the same damn things, millions of times,
ABOUT THE BOOK
The book is an honest expression of motherhood on so many levels–even the way in which it was created since Carpenter wrote it on her iPhone, typing with only a thumb, while nursing her infant daughter. Each poem is complimented by artistic portraits that were created on an iPhone by the author and her family. The iMac cover design showcases a single breast which is synonymous with motherhood, as it is natural, life sustaining and comforting. “I Am Mom is not your typical, flowery-written work about motherhood,” says Cathy Sue Carpenter. “I write about sleep deprivation, frustration, angst and monotony, exhaustion as well as those wonderful moments that cut through the rough stuff and demonstrate the amazingness of it all. Honestly, I didn’t even know if it is poetry of the scrambled random thoughts of an overtired mom, so I made sure to include that in the title just in case. Either way, by offering a truer perspective of motherhood, I think moms everywhere will find the book insightful and validating.” I Am Mom is now available for purchase on-line and in stores just in time for Mother’s Day!
until I'm blue in the face. I am the good guy and the bad guy. I am loving, caring and kind. I am also hell on wheels. Did I mention I was the bad guy? I am everything, yet I am nothing. I AM Mom.
