Always Exploring

L

ike many, I love to explore. Whether I’m going for a walk in the woods or driving home from work, I take the scenic route whenever possible. I want to discover new places and different paths; I’m always hoping to find things most people don’t get to see. My favorite thing to do with my kids is to explore local forest preserves and state parks. We will always take the path less traveled (within reasonable driving distance!), and I owe this sense of adventure to my Dad. When I was a kid our family summer vacation was always somewhere unique; we never visited the same place twice. We would pile into the schoolbus orange 1978 VW Vanagon, and simply head out across the country. The trip was always an adventure of some kind, from crab fishing on Chincoteague Island to horseback riding in the mountains of Alberta, Canada. Our Walkmans provided the soundtrack to the miles and miles of new sights, and we read library books as the sun set. I loved falling asleep to the hum of the road. It never dawned on me that my dad did everything for these trips: the organization and preparation it took to map our routes, his carefully planned stops—not to mention all the driving he did! Two weeks vacation, every year, each of the days with an itinerary that we followed almost to the hour. All done without the internet. Today, like my father before me, I plan our family adventures. My “planning” is usually done the night before as I sit in front of the television, using my smartphone to Google our different options and routes. The next morning we pack some sandwiches, make sure everyone’s devices are charged for the ride, and head out for the day. Until I sat down to write this, I’d never even thought about how he came up with these trips or have I asked how he made it all happen year after year. Wow. Thanks, Dad.

Finding Gender Balance in Home Decor ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI

14

SW Lake Lifestyle | June 2016

D

o you believe men are from Mars and women are from Venus? Does your style differ from your spouse’s? There's been a lot of focus lately on gender neutral items, but what about decor? Whether you're selling your house or simply updating its look, it is important to focus pleasing both sides of the spectrum so you can appeal to more people. • Choose a neutral base color. Traditionally this means shades of white, beige or gray. You'll want to use this for walls, flooring, counter tops and furniture. Keep to only a few shades, such as 2-3. Your floors won't be the same shade as the walls. However if you add too much color with the walls, furniture, and floors the room may not have a seamless flow and could look tacky when accents are added. • Add depth. Use deeper tones like navy, burgundy or black paired with pops of color in accents such as pillows, rugs, curtains, and wall art. A patterned rug along with fun accents is a great way to add generic appeal. Avoid delicate trinkets on tables and shelves. Instead, try adding a little industrial or vintage style with chrome, metal, and brass side tables, f loor lamps, and other finishing touches. • Choose tailored furniture with modern accents. Big tufted velvet or floral-patterned sofas speak more to feminine tastes with a more formal style while a streamlined sofa in a neutral fabric paired with a contemporary coffee table and modern accents creates a relaxed, welcoming feel.

• Mix and match fabrics. Try to avoid the ends of the spectrum such as frilly or floral and simple utilitarian items. Leather or velvet fabric furniture can be neutralized by adding accent pillows in linen, cotton, or canvas and simply draping a cashmere throw. Window treatments should be kept simple with soft, easy flowing fabrics or a tailored roman shade style. • Add elements from nature. Add a natural touch with earthy elements such as reclaimed wood tables, woven baskets, natural fiber rugs, and twisted tree branch arrangements. Instead of a feminine style silk f loral arrangement, try a bamboo plant or other faux potted greenery. And wall art with a coastal or nautical theme or any landscape scenery are all perfect ways to add a mutually pleasing style. You can't please everyone all of the time, but when your house is appealing to the majority of prospective buyers you will sell for the most money in the shortest amount of time and keep your family and guests comfortable. For personalized tips and tricks, you can hire an interior designer or consult your real estate expert. Helen Oliveri is a 12-year real estate profes-

sional who loves our community and helping clients achieve their real estate goals is her priority. Adult Day Care Services Supporting Daily Living Needs of Seniors ARTICLE LINDA SMITH

18

SW Lake Lifestyle | June 2016

A

n adult day care center is a non-residential facility that supports the health, nutritional needs, social support, and daily living needs of adults in professionally staffed, group settings. Adult Day Care allows an individual to stay in their home, or the home of their loved one, instead of nursing home placement. Adult Day Care also allows an individual to engage in a variety of activities while in a social setting with their peers during the day. Adult Day Care gives caregiver the opportunity to maintain their job outside of their home while continuing to provide care to their loved one. It is also an opportunity for the caregiver to take a break from providing care to their loved ones with dementia or other chronic illnesses. Most Adult Day Center are open Monday thru Friday for a good part of the day. In most cases, you can attend one day a week or five days a week, whatever best suits your schedule. They are a structured program that provides a variety of health and social support services to meet the medical and cognitive needs of seniors that require chronic care and supervision. Adult Day Centers provide care for 150,000 individuals each day. Family members are the majority of caregivers for disabled and impaired adults. There are some huge benefits to Adult Day Care such as therapeutic and health activities; exercise and socialization; and very importantly Adult Day Care may be more cost effective than hiring a caregiver during the day. In addition, the structure of a day program and the socialization provided can be a benefit to daily enrichment in the client’s life.

Adult Day Centers are required to have a nurse on duty during their business hours. That nurse can provide medication management as well as help with activities of daily living such as bathroom assistance or even shower assistance. If the center cares for members with dementia, it is required to be a secure setting for the clients. Adult Day Care in Illinois can be funded through the Illinois Department on Aging Community Care Program as well as Veterans Administration benefits. This financial assistance can take a burden off families as they struggle with caregiver issues during the day. All Centers are also private pay if community funding is not an option. Most Adult Day Centers will be able to help you with financial qualifications to one of the programs available. If you are a caregiver for someone and need a break, Adult Day Care may be the perfect resource to help you. Be sure to view the Center prior to enrolling and make sure they are licensed in the State of Illinois to ensure proper care.

Years of Adventure Celebrating America’s National Parks REVIEWED BY SUE SHIMKUS

SW Lake Lifestyle | June 2016

A

merica is celebrating 100 years of its National Parks this year so why not make 2016 the year to walk on your wild side? While most of us aren’t as wild as what Steppenwolf ’s classic song ‘Born to Be Wild’ conjures up, we all have a bit of wild side that wants to get out into the great wide open. Take your adventure on the road to explore our National Parks, Monuments, Preserves, Seashores, Historic Sites, Battlefields, Recreation Areas and more on these popular drives.

• ‘Get Your Kicks’ – Route 66 Established in 1926, covering nearly 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, Route 66 was removed from the US Highway System in 1985 after it was replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Fortunately, in 2008 the World Monuments Fund added Route 66 to the World Monuments Watch to preserve as many of the sites along the route as possible, such as gas stations, motels, cafés, trading posts and drive-in movie theaters. Some states have kept the Route 66 designation for parts of the highway. Probably the best state to relive the glory days of Route 66 is in Arizona, where a long segment of Route 66 in Arizona from Seligman to Kingman, Arizona. Why not combine this legendary stretch of Route 66 along with a visit to the Grand Canyon, Sedona and other parks and destinations in Arizona and California. CONTINUED >

A

man in perpetual motion. That is what you’ll see when you go to an event conducted by Dale Perrin of the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce (LZACC). Sometimes the man-in-charge discretely signals to a chamber leader at the speaker's podium. Then he circles back to the team handling the registration table. Pretty soon he is checking in with small groups of business owners trading war stories. Then he transitions to give instructions to the venue staff. Since April of 2003, Perrin has been the LZACC's Executive Director, quietly, humbly and confidently steering the group to a position of prominence as a go-to business organization serving the communities of Lake Zurich, North Barrington, Hawthorn Woods, Long Grove, Kildeer and Deer Park. A native of Sugar Grove, and a Radio & TV graduate from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, Perrin is a fixture in the community, as well as the father of daughter Meredith, in middle school. Like many careers, his path to LZACC took a crooked course from college downstate to Oklahoma and Wisconsin before arriving in Lake Zurich. That journey – whether managing programs for the 24

National Junior Chamber of Commerce or running a fitness store – prepared him well to perform the juggling act necessary to direct a growing chamber of nearly 500 companies. “The best part of working at the chamber is the diversity of the job, both in the tasks that we perform and the many different people we meet and work with,” Perrin shared recently over lunch. “One day I could be in Springfield meeting with elected officials. The next day I might be having a casual conversation over a beer with a new business owner at one of our frequent networking events.” For the uninitiated, a chamber of commerce is both an advocate and a service organization for local businesses. Chambers are a venue through which business professionals can take effective action to help a community progress. “We work on things both big and small,” Perrin says. “This includes major action, such as attracting development, to simpler things like advocating for a minor change to a local ordinance to help businesses.” A few years ago LZACC earned a distinction it shares with fewer than one-in-ten chambers nationally. “In 2013, we earned CONTINUED >

accreditation by the U.S. Chamber,” Perrin explains. “Only 7% of all chambers receive accreditation.” To become accredited a chamber undergoes scrutiny in eight different areas, including Organizational Governance, Finances, Human Resources, Government Affairs, Program Development, Technology, Communication & Marketing, and Facilities. Only six other chambers in Illinois have achieved accreditation. “We are extremely proud to say we are an Accredited Chamber,” Perrin adds. So what’s on the horizon? “Our goal is to be in the 700 – 800 member range within the next five years,” Perrin says. To reach this goal, the chamber will need to “continue to develop new and innovative programs and offer services to our members and the communities we serve.” Based on what has happened at the chamber over the last 13 years, you can bet Perrin will remain in motion until the goal is reached. 18|8 Fine Men’s Salon OFFERING MEN A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEIR GROOMING NEEDS

ARTICLE JEFF EGGERT PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF 18|8

F

or decades, the local barbershop was where men went to get their haircut and face shaved. However, in the last few years, the number of barbershops has decreased. Ultimately, this has forced men to rely on women’s salons for their grooming needs. Often, men are referred to a particular salon because it’s where their wife or girlfriend goes to get their hair done. Most men feel out of place at a primarily all female salon. They are less likely to speak up about their grooming needs and wants. Because of this, men usually end up at the local chop shop. However, men of all ages are craving a more personal grooming experience where they can feel comfortable and get the treatment they really want but haven’t been able to find. Luckily, concepts like 18|8 Fine Men’s Salons are changing the grooming game for men. 18|8 Fine Men’s Salons caters directly to men, offering them an upscale space with affordable luxuries like MANicures, pedicures, facial treatments, haircuts, shaves and more all in an environment that is modern, relaxing and inviting. At 18|8 in Barrington, we have a signature lounge where men can sit back and enjoy a cold beer before getting their cuts, straight edge hot lather shaves and other treatments. Our creative team consists of licensed cosmetologists and barbers trained in men’s grooming. Every stylist takes an individualized approach with each client. We know that men who walk into our salon are here for a reason – they are looking for customized grooming services in an environment designed just for them.

18|8 offers men the same transformative effect from which the name 18|8 comes: men leave looking their best—and feeling even better! Embracing the immense impact of the discovery of stainless steel (18% chromium + 8% nickel added to steel) on hair salon instruments and other everyday consumer and commercial usage, 18|8’s distinctive collection of upscale services are moderately priced. And, the 18|8 experience doesn’t have to end in the salon. We offer Griff’s™, a premier product line exclusively available through 18|8. Griff’s was created for the style-conscious man who is looking to experience exemplary grooming in the comfort of his own home, with salon-quality products created just for him. All in all, men throughout the country have a new desire to look and feel their best from their head to their toes, and grooming has become an important element of the equation. 18|8 is here to satisfy their needs. coming home to vacation” according to the homeowners. Also on the first floor is the office/studio, with built-in cabinets, a wall of windows and French doors. A bridal staircase leads to five generous bedrooms, loft with built-in work spaces, and a large laundry room. The luxurious Master retreat boasts a fireplace, spiral staircase to a private loft/second office, walk-in closet and spa bath with a double whirlpool tub and large steam shower. A Princess Suite is included in the four additional bedrooms and three additional bathrooms located on this level.
