he Fourth of July is not only the peak of summer, it is also when we remember who we are as a country, as well as who we need to be moving forward. As you celebrate with friends and family, I invite you to remember what being an American means to you. For so many different reasons, whenever I see f ireworks explode above, I have never had a dry eye when I hear the Star-Spangled Banner. I hope I never do.

The Star-Spangled Banner O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. -Lyrics by Francis Scott Key and music by John Stafford Smith

Varicose and spider veins will always reoccur after they have been repaired.

Despite the overwhelming prevalence of vein disease, there is a serious lack of understanding about its symptoms and treatment. The devoted physicians at Illinois Vein Specialists recognize the need for raising awareness about vein disease, so we will be dispelling the most common and detrimental myths about its effects and treatment over the next several months.

The Truth about Treatment One common misunderstanding about vein disease is that varicose veins often reoccur after treatment. This is far from the truth, reminiscent of the days when vein stripping was the most widely used treatment option. While procedures like vein stripping were, of course, performed with the best of intentions, they actually caused the recurrence of varicose veins. Today, the field of venous & lymphatic medicine has made incredible progress in the understanding and treatment of different forms of vein disease and has lowered recurrence rates to below 5%! State-of-the-art treatments like ultrasound-guided endovenous laser therapy and sclerotherapy are better organized, safer, and more efficient than ever before. They are non-invasive and generally pose little risk for complications during recovery. Procedures like endovenous laser therapy allow physicians to treat varicose veins at their source. These newer techniques are more effective, less painful, and require little to no downtime. Your physician will explain detailed aftercare instructions and answer any questions you might have that are specific to your individual case.

Seeking Relief from a Board Certified Vein Specialist At Illinois Vein Specialists, we care just as much about the medicine and the specialized practice of Phlebology (the treatment of vein and lymphatic disease) as we do our patients. We focus only on treating varicose and spider veins and treat patients from Buffalo Grove, Cary, Elgin, Algonquin, Palatine, Vernon Hills, Crystal Lake, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich, Fox River Grove, Mundelein, Grayslake, Wauconda, Chicago, and all areas of Barrington, Illinois. We even have patients from Alaska to Sienna, Italy and Texas to Connecticut. We understand that when you choose a doctor you want to go to someone you know, like and trust, and honestly so do we. We know that patients come to us most often from satisfied patient referrals, but we encourage you to do your own homework and ask around. In the end no matter where you live or who you decide to have treat your varicose or spider veins, find someone who focuses only on diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins — find a Board Certified Venous and Lymphatic physician.

To learn more about vein disease and how Illinois Vein Specialists, a center of excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease, might be able to help you: Call for an appointment at 847-277-9100, stop by our offices at 22285 Pepper Road (suite 105), Lake Barrington and look at our “brag book,” or visit us online at www.IllinoisVeinSpecialists.com

he Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) presented local businesswoman Deborah Leydig of Norton’s U.S.A. with the prestigious ATHENA Award at a luncheon Thursday, May 26 honoring five outstanding local women leaders. The event was held at the Biltmore Country Club in North Barrington and hosted by BACC’s Women’s Biz Net (WBN), a network of women business and community leaders. During the luncheon five local women leaders were honored including Leydig and Nandia Black, Village President of Kildeer; Susan McConnell, accomplished photographer and founder of Let It Be Us; Georgeanna Mehr, President of Hoffman Estates Community Bank; and Deborah Rivera, General Manager and Co-Owner of Ambroisa Euro American Patisserie. “The ATHENA Leadership Award was inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment - qualities embodied in the ATHENA Leadership Model,” said Guest Speaker KL Daly, a Founding Lifetime Member of ATHENA International. “The ATHENA Award honors an individual for professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.” 14

2016 ATHENA Recipient Deborah Leydig started her career in fashion design working for Geoffrey Beene, Ellen Tracey and Jones of New York. During the 80s she switched her focus to graphic design and sold gift wrapping paper to department stores under her designer label. In 1987 she began a professional acting career and after appearing in a play about the decline in American products; she opened Norton’s U.S.A in 2007 in Barrington to help the American worker and manufacturer. Her plight to save the American worker has led to a highly successful storefront and online business all

dedicated to made in America products. In her community, Deborah has dedicated efforts to supporting many local organizations, raising thousands for causes such as cancer, local food pantries and more. She is considered a local business advocate and mentor to other business owners. “Deborah, you are a force for good that will not be stopped or deterred and a fierce advocate of all that is great about America,” Daly said. “Our ATHENA Awards program is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on local women leaders who are aspiring role models,” said BACC President/CEO Suzanne Corr. “The real treasure in this event is hearing about these amazing women, what they have accomplished, what they have given back to our communities, and how they set the bar high for all of us.” All nominees were honored at the event for their history of accomplishment and giving. The theme of the luncheon was “Walking on Sunshine.” WBN’s first ATHENA Leadership Award was presented to Joyce Palmquist, Executive Director of the Barrington Area Council on Aging (BACOA) in November 2012. The 2014 award was presented to Ellaine Sambo-Reyther, VP – Director, Trust & Estate Services at BMO Harris Bank. The 2015 ATHENA recipient was Dr. Amy Derick of Derick Dermatology. ATHENA, an international award, has been given in 500 cities and 8 countries. Recipients have included Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State; Kay Koplovitz, founder of USA Networks and the first women network president in television history; Pat Schroeder, former 12-term U.S. Congresswoman; Ruth Bader Ginsburg, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and others. Exploring the World Together Family Travel Q + A ARTICLE SUE SHIMKUS

Sue Shimkus, president of Lake Zurich Travel, says… Summer is here, and that means family experiences packed with adventure, flavor and fun. Whether you have grown kids, teenagers, small kids, adult families or multigenerational family travel in mind, here are a few questions we’ve been asked recently and some of our recommendations for the perfect vacation—anywhere in the world! Q. OUR TEENAGERS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND? • A. We urge you to consider an “all-inclusive” resort stay. You can have all the features of a resort,

great food, delectable drinks, and unlimited activities, all included in the price. That gives the entire family the freedom to experience an amazing array of activities without stress or hassle. We love some of the Club Med’s “most inclusive” family plan programs where they really know how to manage the diverse needs of family groups, from tots to teens to adults of all ages. Q. I WANT TO TAKE MY TWO GROWN SONS ON A “SPORTY” VACATION (AND NOT JUST GOLF). ANY SUGGESTIONS? • A. There’s really nothing like fishing and hiking in the Canadian Rockies. The scenery is spectacular, and the angling is world class.

Prepare Your Home for Vacation ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI

ou know the old saying, "safe as houses," but is your house safe while you're off to an amazing destination? The last thing you'll want to do while having fun is to worry needlessly. Here are some important safety tips to keep your home in perfect working order while you and your family enjoy your vacation. Don't announce your trip - The check-in features of social media make it easier than ever to tell everyone about your exciting trip and what a great time you are having, not to mention make your friends envious by showing them pictures of your feet stretched out on the beach or the exciting adventures you are having. However, this tells everyone that your home and possessions are unguarded, and social media is not as secure as you may think. Wait till you get back to share the joys of your vacation. Sign up online at HoldMail.USPS.com/holdmail to have your mail held and cancel all deliveries like the newspaper. Also, light your home like 20

SW Lake Lifestyle | July 2016

you're there. The kitchen is usually a favorite spot for break-ins, and it often has no plug-in lights. Move a lamp into the kitchen and plug it into a timer that you can set from dusk to dawn. You'll want to put on several lights in front, possibly the front door light as well (which will require an outdoor timer). Eliminate Easy Access - According to statistics from the FBI, 61% of burglars use force to gain entry, but they'll often look for open doors and windows first. Check that all door and window locks are working (including the second story), and repair any broken glass, particularly in basement windows. Bring in any hidden keys. If you're leaving your car at home, park it outside against the garage door to block access and make it look like someone's home. Unplug the electric door opener (usually attached to the garage ceiling), so the door can't be opened while you're away. Avoid An Unpleasant Return - Empty the dishwasher, then leave the dishwasher door open. That will allow the interior to

dry, so it won't smell musty by the time you get home. Flush the toilet and leave the lid up to avoid stagnant water. Set the air conditioner to 82 degrees and your house will stay cool enough to prevent both mold and mildew that can grow in just a few days. Unplug any small appliances and electronics that aren't plugged into a surge protector (such as the toaster and coffeemaker) and turn all your surge protector switches to off to prevent a power surge from starting a fire. Helen Oliveri is a 13-year real estate professional who loves our community: helping clients achieve their real estate goals is her priority. She is the managing broker of the newly opened Keller Williams Realty Partners, home of The Helen Oliveri Team in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, where she also resides. Fire-Up a BOLD

Fourth of July BBQ ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

his Fourth of July, take your backyard barbecue staples from basic to bold with knock-out burgers, grilled fruit “steaks” and festive red, white and blue-colored desserts. Opt for burgers with a brazen rub that creates a caramelized outer layer. Make the meal an epic Fourth of July feast with a side of grilled watermelon steaks, marinated in white balsamic vinegar, lemon juice and rosemary, and topped with walnuts, lemon zest and fresh parsley. “Burgers are an Independence Day mainstay, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring,” said McCormick Executive Chef Kevan Vetter. “Pick a flavor combo that packs a real punch for the rub,

then build out the burger with toppings and condiments to match that taste. For example, use Smoky Montreal Steak Seasoning, chili powder and brown sugar to make a sweet and smoky rub, then top with a rich BBQ mayonnaise, melty cheddar, grilled pickle slices and crispy onion straws.”

COWBOY BURGER WITH GRILLED PICKLES AND CRISPY ONION STRAWS

For the BBQ Mayonnaise, mix mayonnaise and Bar-B-Q Sauce in small bowl until well blended. Cover. Refrigerate until ready to serve. For the Onions, mix flour, salt and pepper in large resealable plastic bag. Add onion; toss to coat well. Pour oil into deep fryer, large heavy skillet or saucepan, filling no more than 1/3 full. Heat oil on medium-high heat. Carefully add onion rings to hot oil. Fry 4 to 5 minutes, turning once to brown evenly, until onions rings are golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Set aside. For the Burgers, mix Seasoning, chili powder and brown sugar in small bowl. Shape ground beef into 4 patties. Coat surface of each patty evenly with the rub mixture. Grill over medium heat 4 to 6 minutes per side or until burgers are cooked through (internal temperature of 160ºF). Add cheese slices to burgers 1 minute before cooking is completed. Grill pickle slices 2 to 3 minutes per side or until grill marks appear. Toast rolls on the grill, open-side down, about 30 seconds, if desired. Serve burgers on rolls topped with grilled pickles, Crispy Onion Straws and lettuce. Serve with BBQ Mayonnaise.

Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 BBQ Mayonnaise

• 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons Stubbs Original Bar-B-Q Sauce Crispy Onion Straws

GRILLED WATERMELON STEAKS WITH WALNUT GREMOLATA Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 8 minutes Servings: 8

• 1/2 small seedless watermelon • 1/2 cup white balsamic vinegar • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet Crushed Rosemary • 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt from McCormick Sea Salt Grinder • 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Coarse Ground Black Pepper • 1/4 cup finely chopped toasted walnuts • 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley • 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel Cut 4 (1-inch thick) half-moon slices of watermelon. Reserve any remaining watermelon for another use. Mix vinegar, oil, lemon juice, rosemary, salt and pepper in small bowl. Reserve 2 tablespoons for drizzling grilled watermelon. Place watermelon steaks in glass dish. Add remaining marinade. Refrigerate 20 minutes, turning watermelon halfway through marinating time. Meanwhile, for the Walnut Gremolata, mix walnuts, parsley and lemon peel in small bowl. Set aside. Remove watermelon steaks from marinade. Reserve leftover marinade for brushing watermelon during grilling. Grill watermelon steaks over high heat 2 to 4 minutes per side or until grill marks appear, brushing with leftover marinade. To serve, cut watermelon steaks in half. Drizzle with reserved 2 tablespoons marinade. Sprinkle with Walnut Gremolata. July 2016 | SW Lake Lifestyle

T

he 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra leaves no stone unturned when it comes to an all-inclusive cruising bike. It was built for touring and that's exactly what it excels in. Fully loaded with copious storage compartments, hard-case saddlebags, trunk and luggage rack, the Road Glide Ultra is conscious when it comes to functionality and style. It harnesses the thrill of a day trip, complete with a windowless 360-degree view, and considers the comfort of the rider and passenger with its Electra Glide Comfort stitch seats and height-adjustable passenger footboards. The front row seats to this pavement pacer are set in a onepiece, two-up style, equipping the driver with full length foot boards and a heel/toe shifter lever for maximum foot and leg comfort. Shorter drivers may find the 28.4-inch seat—one of the highest available—a bit high for their liking, making stops a bit tricky to navigate but not compromising the overall balance once in motion. The smartphone capable Boom! Box 6.5 GT audio system complete with GPS and touchscreen is an enjoyable addition to the laid-back riding this bike encourages. Staying true to its destiny as a touring bike, the six-gallon gas tank with an estimated 42 MGP makes long rides not only pleasurable but also less interrupted by pesky fuel stops. Think of this bike as combining the playfulness and luxury of a ragtop with the ease and confidence of a smaller bike. The sharknose frame-mounted fairing may not have a typical look but it leaves the rider with the perfect amount of wind in their hair to keep that sought after motorcycle experience intact while leaving your arms and back nearly drag-free. Perhaps the smartest feature for wind protection, the frame mounting erases any buffeting in your arms, even when following a tractor trailer at 75 miles per hour on the highway. The mid-frame air deflectors are also included to make the ride smoother on the driver's legs. While the most appreciated feature is comfort, there's no mistaking the power and speed that comes complimentary of Harley-Davidson's Twin-Cooled 1690 cc High Output Twin Cam 103 engine. With an as-shipped weight of nearly 900 pounds you won't have nearly the pickup you would get from a sport bike, but the weight does help take much of the road abuse away from the rider. Overall, I thought the bulky build of the bike would take away from its handling but I was pleasantly surprised by the maneuverability it possessed despite the extra baggage of the saddlebags, trunk, and wind deflectors. As a touring bike, it's everything I expected it to be, and much more.

Members of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) recently celebrated the opening of Health in Motion Physical Therapy, located at 22000 N. Pepper Road, Suite I, in Lake Barrington. Jurga Napolitano has been a physical therapist for 15 years focusing mainly on orthopedic injuries, chronic pain, and stroke rehab. For the past six years, her attention has shifted to Total Motion Release system, which teaches patients to be their own pain relief experts. Imagine learning a few simple moves that you can use to treat yourself! If you get hurt or your pain comes back, you can use total motion release to help you heal and be pain-free! It was the driving force for her to open up her private practice, to be part of a radical change to the way physical therapy is practiced.
