his month I find myself wondering how, all of a sudden, it’s August.
What happened to June? I know July was hotter than I can ever remember but August? Why haven’t I gone hiking or spent any lazy days in a hammock by the lake?

I’ve realized that my focus has been so far and wide as I sit in awe of the world events. The news continues to stun me almost daily. I feel it will only get more intense with the looming battle of the presidential election and what we have to endure in the coming months of non-stop politics. As I’m not willing to have both my summer AND my fall disappear before my eyes, I’ve decided to make a list of the ten things I need to enjoy as we head into August. Some are simple— a picnic in the park with my nieces and a dinner out in the city, and a few will take coordinating and possibly some sweet talking: for concert tickets and lake-house weekends with family and friends. I’m adding a reminder (on my list) to focus on local and close-to-home happenings and places that me feel good about where I am and what I’m doing. I will allow myself a few daily news check-ins but I think it’s time to focus close to home. Just the thought has me feeling more hopeful. I promise myself that this will not be a summer that got away.

Varicose and spider veins will always reoccur after they have been repaired.
The Truth about Treatment
Seeking Relief from a Board Certified Vein Specialist
One common misunderstanding about vein disease is that varicose veins often reoccur after treatment. This is far from the truth, reminiscent of the days when vein stripping was the most widely used treatment option.
At Illinois Vein Specialists, we care just as much about the medicine and the specialized practice of Phlebology (the treatment of vein and lymphatic disease) as we do our patients. We focus only on treating varicose and spider While procedures like vein stripping were, of course, veins and treat patients from Buffalo Grove, performed with the best of intentions, they actually Cary, Elgin, Algonquin, Palatine, Vernon Hills, caused the recurrence of varicose veins. Today, the Crystal Lake, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich, Fox field of venous & lymphatic medicine has made River Grove, Mundelein, Grayslake, Wauconda, incredible progress in the understanding and Chicago, and all areas of Barrington, Illinois. treatment of different forms of vein disease and We even have patients from Alaska to has lowered recurrence rates to below 5%! Sienna, Italy and Texas to Connecticut. State-of-the-art treatments like ultrasound-guided endovenous laser therapy and sclerotherapy are better organized, safer, and more efficient than ever before. They are non-invasive and generally pose little risk for complications during recovery. Procedures like endovenous laser therapy allow physicians to treat varicose veins at their source. These newer techniques are more effective, less painful, and require little to no downtime. Your physician will explain detailed aftercare instructions and answer any questions you might have that are specific to your individual case.
We understand that when you choose a doctor you want to go to someone you know, like and trust, and honestly so do we. We know that patients come to us most often from satisfied patient referrals, but we encourage you to do your own homework and ask around. In the end no matter where you live or who you decide to have treat your varicose or spider veins find someone who focuses only on diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins—find a Board Certified Venous and Lymphatic physician.

ELA LIBRARY BREAKS ATTENDANCE RECORD Ela Library is celebrating another milestone – record-breaking attendance. During the fiscal year that ended June 30 (FY 15-16), visitorship reached 421,366. This is the highest attendance since 2010 when 405,530 people used the Library. “This record-breaking visitor count is a good indication that our facility, programs, and resources combine to create an appealing and valuable community hub,” said Executive Director Matt Womack. A year ago, attendance peaked at 362,498 for the 2014-15 fiscal year. The new record-breaking statistic is a 15 percent increase from last year. “The number is equivalent to each resident of the district visiting the library every month,” added Womack. In the spring of 2015, the Library completed a $1.75 million renovation of the Children’s Department and teen area with improved spaces on the first and second floors. Forge, a makerspace equipped with innovative technologies, tools and enrichment opportunities, was established for Library users to develop new skills, pursue hobbies, create and discover. The new Advocate Good Shepard Hospital
ARTICLE MICHAEL BEIGHTOL
F
or the last few years when driving on Route 22 in Lake Barrington, it was clear something big was taking place at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. Recently, the hospital's major addition and renovation project were completed, revealing the importance of creating an atmosphere of healing for patients, visitors and staff. Even before entering the building, long-time visitors will notice a new look to the campus: re-routed driveways, expanded parking and newly landscaped grounds with a larger pond, walking paths and now, a new sculpture that embraces the mission of the hospital. The recently dubbed “Everest Easel" was erected in June and can be found on a walking path near the east entrance of the Good Shepherd campus. Created by Dr. Russell Riendeau, a local artist, musician, author, and business executive, the brilliant blue steel sculpture stands 15 feet tall and weighs 1,500 pounds.
18
SW Lake Lifestyle | August 2016
“Later, Russ and I shifted gears to consider the possibility of donating the sculpture to the hospital as part of the campus modernization project. I contacted Sue Abderholden, Vice President of Development for Advocate Charitable Foundation, to tell her about the unique sculpture and how it might fit in on the hospital grounds.”
The Patient Care Tower
Newly built interior stairway of the facility.
“Russ once approached me about displaying his sculpture during a local event,” recalled Brad Stetson, Chairman/CEO of Barrington Bank & Trust and a member of the hospital governing council. “It really was quite unique and interestingly creative. Because it was a rather large piece of art, I was a bit concerned where I could safely place it around the bank, so unfortunately, back then I had to politely decline his offer. “Later, Russ and I shifted gears to consider the possibility of donating the sculpture to the hospital as part of the campus modernization project. I contacted Sue Abderholden, Vice President of Development for Advocate Charitable Foundation, to tell her about the unique sculpture and how it might fit in on the hospital grounds.” A longtime Barrington resident, Riendeau, also a partner with Jobplex/DHR International (a retained search firm in Chicago), recently shared the inspiration behind his project: “The idea for this easel came to me one night. I jotted down a picture of what I thought it would look like and went back to sleep. Over the next few months, the idea would not go away, so I took the next step by finding a metal fabricator who was just crazy enough to help. The piece is all about setting goals and framing them in a way they can be achieved. The wacky abstractness symbolizes that “perfect” is an illusion and good enough now is good enough. “This piece is to help inspire those individuals needing hope or just an amusing distraction,” he said. “I want them to see the messages that are part of everyday life, especially so when undergoing a struggle,” Riendeau added. “We are very grateful to Russ for his generous donation,” said Karen Lambert, Good Shepherd CEO. “I like how the piece allows individuals to frame a scene of the hospital grounds. From one angle it frames the original farm houses on our campus. From another, it frames the front of the new lobby entrance.” Lambert added one more feature of Riendeau’s sculpture that seems especially appropriate given the era we live in today: “It’s also a wonderful backdrop for selfies for our patients, associates, and physicians.” Michael Beightol is an area marketing consultant and contributing writer to SW Lake Lifestyle Magazine. Several Caribbean cruises often start with a visit to Nassau in the Bahamas. In Nassau, you can find everything from marching flamingos to bustling casinos. Take an afternoon to visit the Atlantis Resort with its famous water slides and running-river tubing—you may even encounter a dolphin or two at the adjacent marine habitat of Dolphin Kay! Creating
The Perfect
Garden
ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI
P
lanting a garden is a good move if you want to ramp up curb appeal, have fresh vegetables, or enjoy your landscape. More buyers want move-in-ready houses, meaning they don't want to have to plant a garden themselves. MANY PEOPLE TODAY ARE TURNING TO HOME GARDENING AS A MEANS OF ACQUIRING FRESH PRODUCE IN THE SUMMER MONTHS.
• It may be tempting to purchase cheaper, plastic edging, but you get what you pay for. Brick, concrete or stone dug into a small trench is the best solution for longevity and easier mowing, trimming and maintenance. It's a lot of work to create a garden, but if you do it right the first time, gardening will only get easier. It will also add value and curb appeal to your home.
• Like all things in real estate, it's all about location! For example, tomatoes need rich soil with plenty of sunshine, and will die in a shaded or soggy spot. Vegetables should be near the house for easy picking. • Make sure that you get a heavy duty shovel that will stand up to roots and stems. Get tips and suggestions from a gardening expert to make sure you have all the quality tools for your particular yard. • Dig out a spade-deep layer of dirt, place it on a tarp and remove any roots, stems, or rocks. Loosen the next layer of soil and return the top layer along with compost and topsoil. Save time and labor by smothering the grass with cardboard before topping with compost and topsoil. Don't skip on the compost because your plants will need the organic material for nutrients. • Get rid of weeds right away. Irrigate only when necessary and fertilize using an organic product according to label instructions. FLOWER GARDENS POSITIVELY AFFECT THE OVERALL APPEAL AND POTENTIAL SELLING PRICE OF A HOME.
• Start seeds in trays, pots or coir pots by using a seedling mixture. Place in a sunny spot and transplant as soon as the seedlings developed sturdy stems. Nursery-grown plants give you instant gratification, but the short time between purchase and planting is crucial. Take the plants straight home and water them. • Annuals only last a year, while perennials will keep coming back. Evergreen shrubs or ornamental grasses can provide structure and year-round interest. For a lot of ground cover, select spreading plants. Don't forget to plan for the final height of the plant. • Follow the guidelines on the seed packet or plant tag. It may not seem like they need that much space, but the root system will need lots of room to grow. Always place transplants so that the soil is level where it meets the plant.

AMERICA'S ADDICTION TO
Cellphones ARTICLE JESSICA SCHIRRIPA
I
n a recent effort to show the obsession behind cellphone usage, New Theory Magazine released an infographic showcasing the latest data to back up America’s cellphone usage addiction. There is no denying this generation has a problem. Numbers do not lie. To say that we are, “attached”, is officially an alarming understatement. Individuals have become reliant on staying connected. The average user checks their cellphone 110 times throughout any given day, translating into approximately 3.6 hours every single day and roughly 25.2 hours during the course of a week. It is hard to imagine all of the supplementary, productive accomplishments an individual could be achieving while utilizing their time more efficiently. Individuals of all ages are finding themselves affected by this epidemicpositively and negatively. However, no matter how an individual is choosing to value their cellphone, there is no argument that it is a daily distraction. Keeping account of continuous job-related and social mobilization can lead to a distressed impact on an individual’s sleeping patterns and overall lifestyle. 77% of parents struggle to monitor their teenagers and younger children’s activity right in the comfort of their own home, including the dinner table. 40% of users interact on their cellphones while on the toilet — keep that in mind next time you’re texting someone! Aside from the indecent visuals, the most problematic form of refusing to put down your cellphone is ‘texting while driving’. With 26% of the car accidents in the United States caused by this situation, up to 75% even admit guilt, although experts can ensure the true numbers would be higher.

Highly-accredited psychologist Dr. Bart Rossi weighs in, “Millennials do not relate to smartphone technology simply as a means of communication. It is culturally much more than that. It is a ‘way of life’. Individuals capitalize on the device as a user-based "network" and essentially apply it to manage their standard of living, both professionally and socially.” Since relationships are discovered, cultivated, and enhanced through digital pursuits, various aspects of social norms have evolved- even surpassing more traditional platforms of extended reach. Whether business inspired or romantic quests, success can be as easy as a swipe, an email or a DM away. Despite the focus that individuals have on their own hand-held universe, it is the number one way media is currently being consumed by the mass public. Americans scroll down their news-feed, double-tap and click through countless updates, photos, hash-tags, graphics, videos, and articles, all in a vain attempt to be a part of the trends. This is not perception; this is reality. Rossi also insights, “Without a person’s phone just for even a few minutes, a millennial’s attitude and behavior may increase in "nervousness", generating unnecessary anxiety. For this reason, this is the only way they know how to exchange with the rest of their acquaintances and the world. When they do not have that instrument, their goals become obstructed from engaging information and action planning.” As the numbers steadily climb from each passing year, we are all left wondering, have we gone too far with our cellphones? Can people really learn how to live life again after “disconnecting”?

Parting Thoughts
In Defense of the WORDS ANGIE UNDERWOOD, FROM HER BLOG LIFEINLONGGROVE.COM
I
t is a testament to our ecological stewardship in Long Grove that we still have many varieties of native wildflowers that bloom in public and private woodlands and open spaces. In fact, we even have one variety that is a federally protected endangered species. I have never seen the white fringed prairie orchid, but State officials assure us it is here and have kept the site location confidential. Just one more way in which our Village is rare and special. This flower has been recently under attack in our boardroom, as the private property owners try to rally Village support against the State’s attempts to further protect this endangered species. Do we side with the residents or the flower? Should the Village be involved at all? Some on the Board are critical of the State and dismissive of the ecological concerns. Emotions are high and accusations have been made. It has gotten so ridiculous that at the recent Village Board meeting one Trustee suggested that if it were his property, he might just take care of the problem with the use of some “agent orange.” Seriously? I am in solidarity with the environmentalists, and spoke up in defense of the flower. After all, isn’t it a resident too? This species has been blooming in Long Grove for more years than I have, and has been protected by the State at this location for decades. The experts at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Illinois Nature Preserve Agency have studied the situation for many years and determined the best course of action for the collective greater good. The owners of the piece of property where the orchid lives beg to differ. There are other factors at play in this; for brevity and confidentiality I have simplified the issue. But in the end, it all comes down to money. And if that doesn’t work, well, the State has something as a last resort called eminent domain. Never underestimate the power of a flower. 34
