A Month of Change

SEPTEMBER 2016

I

’ve always loved September. It’s a month that signifies change. The kids are back to school, the oppressive heat and humidity of August have abated, football kicks off; and fall, with its brilliant colors is in the air.

Fifteen years ago, September was also the month that the world changed. On a beautiful sunny day the sky was suddenly devoid of planes, the streets were empty, everyone was in front of their tv’s watching the horrible events unfold. The United States of America changed, big time. We gained a new appreciation of our police officers, our firefighters, our military. Most importantly, we gained a new appreciation of our country and our freedom. The Fourth of July, while always an important day, has took on a whole new meaning. The parades are bigger, the parties are more fun and the fireworks feel like a huge family reunion.

Varicose Vein Treatment is Just a Cosmetic Fix

Despite the overwhelming prevalence of vein disease, there is a serious lack of understanding about its symptoms and treatment. The devoted physicians at Illinois Vein Specialists recognize the need for raising awareness about vein disease, so we will be dispelling the most common and detrimental myths about its effects and treatment over the next several months.

Vein Treatment Is Vital It is arguable that the most harmful misconception about vein disease is that it is a cosmetic concern rather than a legitimate disease. This misconception lends itself to many of the myths in circulation about vein disease, including the idea that there is no need to seek treatment for problems like varicose or spider veins unless they cause physical pain. Varicose veins are a sign of vascular insufficiency and compromise and can lead to worsening pain and swelling or tired and achy legs. Without treatment, those suffering from varicose veins are likely to experience continuing pain, fatigue, and swelling of the legs and ankles. In more serious situations, patients can develop Edema (an excess of watery fluid collecting in the leg tissue), Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots in the leg), and even venous ulcers. DVT is an especially serious symptom. If left undiagnosed, the thrombosis may eventually block the entire vein and endanger the health of the leg. Alternatively, a piece of the blockage, called an embolism, may break off and travel to the lung causing chest pain and difficulty breathing or even threaten life.

hen selling your house it can feel like you're in a zoo with all the showings and open houses bringing potential buyers parading through your home. Keeping your home in tip-top shape at all times can be daunting, but adding kids and pets to the equation can make it seem impossible. These tips will help you with handling your pets through this situation. Not everyone grew up with a family pet. In fact, some people may not enjoy being around them or worse, they could be scared of your cherished animal. Cats have claws and dogs have been known to bite. Even reptiles and birds can cause problems for some potential buyers.

12

SW Lake Lifestyle | September 2016

While your pet may be cute and cuddly without any prior issues, a large volume of people invading their territory could result in negative behavior your pet wouldn't normally display. Furthermore, you don't want to put your pet through any undue stress. You don't know the people coming into your home. While we all want to think the best of people, there are those that mistreat animals. The best thing to do to ensure top price for your home is to relocate your pets while the home is on the market. You could simply put them in a separate room or even outside, but that most likely won't be enough. Ask a friend or relative to care for your pets, or, if possible, board them at a kennel during a showing. If none of those are possible options, try to minimize the pet's presence. You could place them in a carrier and attach a note informing buyers not to disturb them. Pets have a smell. Pet owners are used to it, but Kitty's litter box and Fido's presents in the backyard can be offensive to potential buyers. Keep litter boxes out of sight and impeccably clean. Be sure to use stain removers specially made with scent absorbents for any accidents that have happened on carpet, rugs and furniture. Also, don't forget to store all of your pet items such as food bowls and toys in a secure location. Some people don't even want to purchase a home if they are aware that an animal was there, so it's best to remove all signs that your pet lives there. Selling a home with a pet is a challenge, but with a little extra work it can be safe and profitable. While this is a stressful time for you, keep in mind that your pet doesn't understand what's going on and it will be extremely stressful to him or her. Remember to talk to your real estate expert for more tips and advice on your particular pet and situation. Helen Oliveri is a 13-year real estate professional who loves our community and helping clients achieve their real estate goals is her priority. These bottles in the Glengoyne distillery show how whisky evaporates and gets darker as it ages.

’ve long wished to visit Scotland, to experience the culture and to see up close the ruggedly beautiful countryside and volcanic mountains such as Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. Oh yes, and to sample the whisky. Last fall my wife and I took a weeklong group tour of Scotland, and it was a low-stress, easy way to get acquainted with the country. Bus tours have their drawbacks — you can’t deviate far from the tour itinerary and schedule — but they are also appealing because everything is pre-arranged. Luggage is picked up and delivered to your room each day, many meals are included and there is very little time spent waiting in line at attractions because tours get preference. Our tour started in Edinburgh, and we arrived a day early so we would have time to adjust to the time change. After a day spent touring this ancient city, we hopped on the bus and headed for the mountainous Scottish highlands and our overnight stay at the Laggan Country Hotel near the tiny hamlet of Laggan. On the way we made a quick stop at St. Andrews, the home of golf. Despite a soft rain, being able to stand at the fabled 18th green and visualize Tom Watson waving goodbye from Swilcan Bridge for the final time in 2015 sent a chill up my spine. We arrived at our Highlands hotel by mid-afternoon and after a brief rest we drove to nearby Aviemore for a 45-minute sheepdog exhibition by Neil Ross of Leault Working Sheepdogs. Scotland has more sheep than people and raising sheep is one of the predominant types of farming. Sheepdogs are a crucial part of tending flocks. Ross has more than a dozen dogs, as well as a few pups, on his beautiful farm near the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and he frequently hosts tour groups. With the virtuosity of an orchestra conductor, Ross commanded his dogs with whistles, hand gestures and occasional shouts. The precision with which the dogs rounded up and moved a small herd of sheep was startling. At one point in the demonstration, Ross had four dogs lie down about 20 yards apart while a single dog drove the herd back and CONTINUED >

forth between the dogs as if they were weaving through gates. Young pups were just learning and often took their lead from the older dogs. Our visit culminated with Ross shearing a sheep by hand. As the afternoon turned to twilight it was back to the inn for a wee dram of whisky to ward off the late fall chill before dinner. Like sheep, whisky (no e in Scottish whisky) is a staple of Scottish life and has been for centuries. Scotland’s earliest documented distilling of whisky dates to tax records of 1494, when Friar John Cor bought “eight bolls of malt to make aqua vitae (water of life).” The Scotch Whisky Regulations define “Scotch Whisky” as that produced at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted barley, processed, fermented and matured in Scotland for at least three years. Throughout our stay in Scotland I marveled at the vast array of whiskies that come from the more than 100 distilleries in five main whisky-producing regions. A small whisky shop in the mountain town of Pitlochry had an entire wall stacked floor-to-ceiling with boutique brands. CONTINUED >

The St. Mary’s is the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of St. Andrew’s and Edinburgh.

The Glengoyne distillery north of Glasgow was founded in 1833. Our tour included a “wee dram” at 10 in the morning. The Glengoyne visitor center had several displays that demonstrated how whisky changes as it ages. It takes on a darker color from the sherry oak cask in which it is aged, and over time evaporation causes the volume to decrease. That explains why really some really old vintages are so expensive. Glengoyne sells its 35-year-old whisky for £2,850 pounds, or about $4,097 a bottle. There are as many sides to Scotland as there are brands of whisky and that means that a weeklong tour is just a “wee dram.” There are many more places to explore the next time, and I especially want to visit some of the smaller villages in places such as the Shetland, Orkney and Hebrides islands. Oh yes, and sample a few more whiskies.

If you do nothing else, do this move:

The Push-up. There is no movement better for building overall strength. Don't be intimidated; you don't need to be a Marine. Start with a modified version with your hands on your counter top. Do 10 of each variation, every day. Next week, increase it to 15. Week 3, try it on your knees. It takes less than 10 minutes a day. Recognize your progress as you get stronger and be proud.

The standard push-up:

Photos by Paul Versluis

Targets arms, shoulders, core & chest.

1. Place hands on mat, directly below shoulders. 2. Zip your abs up & pull belly button into your spine. Your abs protect your back. Keeping them up & tight is the MOST important thing. 3. Tilt hips forward creating a diagonal line. Either stay on knees or come up on your toes. 4. Drop your chest towards the ground, in control, then simply push it back up.

The wide

stance push-up: Targets primarily chest and also abs, back & shoulders 1. Use the same form as the standard push-up, but place your hands wider than your shoulders. Your elbows will be slightly flared. 2. Drop your chest to the ground, and use the strength in your chest to push back up. 3. This is a slightly easier than the standard.

The tricep push-up:

Targets primarily triceps (back of your upper arms) also shoulders, back & abs 1. Use the same form as the standard push-ups, but this time you squeeze your elbows into your side. Place your hands just a few inches apart, directly under your chest. 2. Drop your chest as low as possible, keeping your elbows glued into your rib cage. 3. This push-up takes some time to develop the strength. If you cannot take your chest all the way down, even dropping a few inches will work the muscles and build strength. 26

3-D WALL FLATS ARTICLE ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

anting to add a WOW factor to your interior design project? These gems are definitely worth a double take. I discovered these Wall Flats at inhabitliving.com a couple years

ago and was waiting for just the right spot to install. Wall Flats are lightweight 3-D wall panels that work together with a large scale pattern repeat. They are 100% bio-degradable, molded of 100% Bagasse which is the dry pulpy residue left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane, making it one of the world’s most renewable resources. Last year, my husband and I took the plunge and hung them in both the powder room and on a recessed wall in the dining room. Now, when we have guests come to our home, it’s only a matter of minutes before they are drawn to these feature walls, examining, touching and asking all sorts of questions about the Wall Flats. They bring a bold, yet sophisticated, positive energy to any space. Wall Flats can be installed on walls as a DIY project or through a contractor, hanging them with either contact cement or a clay-based wallpaper paste. They can be trimmed and are paintable, which opens the door for more creativity. They look stunning, encompassing an entire room or making only one wall an architectural masterpiece. 3-D Wall Flats also make great statement pieces for such places as a fireplace, ceiling, built-ins, pillars, framed in as a wall art piece, and even to hide damaged drywall. Inhabitliving.com offers eleven different styles of Wall Flats, starting at $2.66 per square foot. Visit their website for more ideas and installation instructions. So, whether your style is modern, mid-century, contemporary, retro or architec-

tural, you can’t go wrong with this next generation wall art. As a precautionary statement, once the install is complete, these beauties will steal the show!
