A CABERNET THAT WINS ALL THE RACES Grown on a specific block on our vineyard, Broken Earth’s Estate Cabernet Reserve is carefully grown and aged so that each vintage is consistent with the last. This allows the wine to be one-ofa-kind— like a Seabiscuit against all others! Characteristics of this wine include a very light body and smooth finish with a wonderful array of flavor. Placed at the top as one of the #1 sellers, this is by far one of the most delightful Cabernet’s you will ever meet. Award winning wine is sometimes hard to find. At Broken Earth Winery, it’s a pleasant surprised that many house produced bottles have won various awards. The Estate Cabernet Reserve is powerful and dense like a race horse, and smooth, swift and light in how it carries itself. With every visit to the Long Grove located wine bar, guests are offered two complimentary tastes to sample. Broken Earth’s staff will be sure that you always take home a winner!

SPEED LIMIT TO CHANGE TO 40 MPH ALONG ELA ROAD

THE 9TH ANNUAL LZ AREA TASTE OF THE TOWNS IS BACK

Drivers who travel along Ela Road will notice the speed limit will change from 45 MPH to 40 MPH from Long Grove Road north for about a quarter mile. Local residents were concerned about the speed on a stretch of Ela Road, one of our county highways. In response to this concern, the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) conducted a speed study along Ela Road from Lake Cook Road to south of US 12. Based on the results of the study, LCDOT recommended the speed limit to be decreased, and the change was approved at the Lake County Board meeting this summer. LCDOT has also begun a

Plan Home Improvements Carefully HOW TO SEE A RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT

ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI

I

t’s a common belief that the more you put into your home, the more you’re going to get out of it when it comes time to sell. While this should be true, sadly that isn’t always the case. If you’re thinking about renovations or improvements plan carefully to make sure you see a return on your investment. A pool may seem like an obvious improvement to your property’s value. Families with young children may see that pool as a safety hazard for their kids. Frequently they will pass on homes with pools to save money and would prefer to pay for an upgrade that would benefit their family. This could result in fewer offers on your home when it comes time to sell. This is not to say that a home with a pool isn’t going to yield a bigger return (they usually do). However, it is worth considering before renovating for the sake of adding value. The fact is the value of your home is determined by the market and what a buyer is willing to pay for it. If the buyers don’t see the value in the upgrade you just spent a lot of money on, they will not want to pay for it. You could buy a new appliance, only to discover that anoth-

14

SW Lake Lifestyle | August 2015

er brand or style would be more desirable when your house hits the market. There’s no rule that says that 50 percent of what you spend on the renovation or upgrade will be added to the value of your home. If you are not looking to sell soon and want to renovate, be sure you are doing it for your enjoyment and not for the added value that you may or may not get. If you are selling soon, contact an expert on what will make the biggest impact on the value of your home. You may find it’s better to update the electric or kitchen instead. You have to look at comparable homes in your area with such upgrades and what they are selling for to know for sure. Then you have to consider when you are selling and if the market will still be the same. Helen Oliveri is a 12-year real estate professional that loves our community and helping clients achieve their real estate goals is her priority. She is the managing broker of the newly opened Keller Williams Realty Partners, home of The Helen Oliveri Team in Hawthorn Woods, where she also resides. Fledglings almost ready to fly.

Annual Nesting Bird Count ANNUAL NESTING BIRD COUNT AT BAKERS LAKE ROOKERY

On the morning of June 9, 2015, Jim Bodkin and George Pierce of Citizens for Conservation with Robert Sliwinski, the original engineer of the rookery structure, paddled to the Bakers Lake Rookery in Barrington to complete the annual nesting bird count. Final conclusions are pending, but data shows that they found nests of three Black Crowned Night Herons, two Great Blue Herons and many Great White Egrets and cormorants. The nest count was down from that in 2014. The count is scheduled for the optimum time of year, before the fledglings leave the nest. The Great Blue Heron fledglings were almost ready to fly. CFC continues to coordinate and facilitate the bird count as well as the delivery of recycled Christmas trees for strategic nesting placement on the island in the winter. Many of the nesting frames, built many years ago, are in need of repair. PUT SHADE IN YOUR FUTURE – CFC FALL NATIVE TREE SALE

Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. —Warren Buffet With the coming of summer heat, we can all appreciate the shade that trees and shrubs provide. Besides cooling the air, trees and shrubs reduce noise, absorb storm water, clean air pollution, and 16

block winter winds. Native trees and shrubs provide the best choices of woody plants because they provide those benefits and more: • Natives can survive our extreme temperatures; • Natives need watering only the first year or two to get established; • Natives do not need fertilizer or insecticide; • Natives provide habitat for the insects that feed birds, nestlings and amphibians. Check your yard to see if you have a place for a native tree or shrub to support bird populations and the native insects on which they rely. If you want more information about the natives for sale this fall, join us for: “Native Trees and Shrubs” a discussion presented by Meredith Tucker and Annamarie Lukes on Wednesday, August 12, at 7 p.m. at Barrington Village Hall. RSVP to CFC at 847.382.SAVE. All plants discussed available for purchase online at Our Annual Fall Native Tree and Shrub Sale, sells by PREORDER ONLY. Find the order form at CitizensForConservation.org, or we can mail one to you if you call 847.382.SAVE. We will accept orders from August 1 through September 1. Plan to pick-up your trees on September 19 between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at CFC headquarters, the white farm house and silo at 459 W. Highway 22, Lake Barrington, Il.

CFC PRESENTS HABITAT LESSON FOR MONTESSORI SCHOOL

This summer, the children of Montessori Children’s House of North Barrington explored some habitats of Illinois with the help of Citizens for Conservation. Together with four summer interns, Youth Education leader, Gail Vanderpoel, presented information on habitats at four stations around the school’s play yard. The children learned examples of animals and plants found in wetlands, prairies, woodlands, and underground. They answered riddles, splashed in water, used binoculars and bug viewers, dressed up like prairie plants and butterflies, and dug in the dirt to find underground creatures. Closing activities included A Montessori butterfly making a mini-habitat terrarium, playing a habitat matching game, and singing “Old McDonald Had a Habitat.” Citizens for Conservation presents lessons and programs for Montessori Children’s House of North Barrington at various times throughout the year. The children spend a lot of time outdoors and the school has numerous awards and nature classroom designations for their encouragement of nature-based learning.

Globetrekking for the Entire Family ARTICLE SUE SHIMKUS

20

SW Lake Lifestyle | August 2015

F

ully designed itineraries delve into local traditions and fascinate travelers of all ages, providing even the youngest globetrotters with the best education they never saw coming. We share a few of their ideas for unique ways families can enjoy activities that are as fun as they are culturally enriching.

RELIVE THE PAST IN ITALY

Take to the Italian region of Puglia, carpeted with olive groves and stone trulli, whitewashed huts with cone-shaped roofs. Starting in Rome, an afternoon at a gladiator school inspires everyone’s imagination about the Roman warriors who once thrived in this area. Your family will learn real-life Roman wrestling techniques and Imperial combat tactics from a private instructor, transforming you into a clan of swordsmen. Then wield a pizza cutter during a private cooking lesson even further south at Armonia del Sapore, learning hand-tossing techniques for making the perfect dough. TAKE A DIP IN ICELAND

Formed over 24-million years, Iceland is a geologic wonder of fire and ice — and the only place in the world where you can stand on the Mid-Atlantic ridge while staying dry. Splash in the geothermic waters of Laugardalslaug, one of Reykjavík’s seven swimming pools where saunas and steam baths provide a natural water park adventure — parents can opt for a soak in the hot tub while kids rocket down a 282-foot water slide. Then hike the lava-tube caves of the Blue

Mountains, which come alive as your private guide relates Viking legends about the outlaws and trolls who were said to inhabit these otherworldly portals. MAKE BELIEVE IN FRANCE

In France’s fairytale Loire Valley, storybook castles dating back to the Middle Ages are flanked by magical forests and sunflower-speckled fields. Little ones receive the royal treatment at Château du Rivau, where they don medieval garb and go in search of treasure on a scavenger hunt. They can also clamber like Jack up the beanstalk on a ropes course in the tiny town of Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt, or duel like Peter Pan and Captain Hook, safely brandishing the épée (dueling sword) while learning to engage “en garde” with a national fencing master. TRACK ANIMALS IN TANZANIA

Greet elephants, giraffes and hippos in Tanzania, exposing your family to the world-famous Serengeti through a range of eco-friendly outings. From horseback riding to archery, every activity is seamlessly adapted to specific ages and interests. The exclusive Mini-Rangers course covertly educates under the guise of fun, with kids having their very own guide to escort them on butterfly capture-and-release outings, game-spotting competitions and a “cosmic safari” that takes an astronomical tour of the night sky. EXPLORE BRITISH COLUMBIA

Canada’s west-coast province of British Columbia spans from Bella Coola’s snowy peaks to sea lion-inhabited Fife Sound. Explore Tweedsmuir Park together with a professional bear guide who points CONTINUED >

Seemingly endless fields of lavender and sunflowers create a spectacular scene in the south of France.

out grizzly tracks. Then, while parents fly-fish for salmon or sip a scotch served on 10,000-year-old glacier ice, the Broughton Archipelago provides an opportunity for kids to get their feet wet while setting crab traps and adventuring alongside a resident naturist. GO DANCING IN SPAIN

In the soulful region of Andalucía, a mélange of colorful cultures speaks to every member of the family. In Seville, a tapas tasting will acquaint you with the local flavor, while an introduction to the wildly popular game of paddle tennis makes for a fun family tournament. Later, a local Flamenco troupe will get you moving to the beat of handclaps and rasping guitar when they share a special dance lesson. Then bike past thriving citrus groves and bull farms in rustic Ronda, pausing to discover some basics of Spanish bullfighting. SOAK UP SCENERY IN IRELAND

The green bogs and teetering cliffs of Ireland’s west coast provide a dramatic backdrop for family pursuits. Near the hills of Clifden, young equestrians can trot a pony along the beach, kicking up the surf of the Atlantic Ocean and harkening to the country’s 300-year tradition of horse racing. Golf is another sport with prominent Irish “links.” Young putters are challenged to a round of mini-golf with the competitive spirit of the PGA pros who tee off at the annual Irish Open. Let Lake Zurich Travel customize your family’s next vacation for a shared experience to surpass the suggestions of any guidebook! Set your sights on five-star food and wine, insightful guides with insider access, and the most exceptional hotels that accommodate families of any size. SHANE'S FOUNDATION TIP-OVER PREVENTION

FULL SPEED AHEAD

New Partnerships Help to Promote Anchor It! Awareness ARTICLE LISA SIEFERT

“I love you”

The Sieferts of Lake Zurich created Shane’s Foundation to provide resources and educate families about tip-over safety. Shane passed away tragically in 2011 in a fatal tip-over accident.

SW Lake Lifestyle | August 2015

were the last words I said to my son, Shane. I closed the door to his room so he could take a nap. When I checked on him later, I opened the door, and I couldn’t do anything but scream. I found my 2 year old under his fallen dresser. We lost our son—my daughter lost her brother—in 2011 to a furniture tip-over accident--an easily preventable tragedy, if only we had known. In 2005, we found out I was pregnant with my daughter, Darby. We did our research on babyproofing to keep her as safe as possible in and around our home. Outlet covers, cabinet locks, door-knob covers. We bought all of the essentials. When we brought Shane home, we took the same precautions. We thought we had everything we needed to protect him. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. We were missing an important piece in our childproofing kit: a furniture anchor. Tip-over accidents are common. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a child is sent to the emergency room an average of every 24 minutes because of a tip-over accident in the United States. Installing low-cost anchors to pieces of furniture, appliances, and televisions can prevent this. I didn’t learn about tip-over safety until it was too late. That is why I started Shane’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Our goal is to share Shane's story and warn parents, grandparents, teachers, pediatricians, safety organizations —anyone I can—about this hidden danger in their homes. Thankfully, I am not working alone. I recently partnered with the CPSC to promote their Anchor It! Campaign. On the website, they provide videos, pictures, and information relating to tip-over prevention, such as these safety tips: • Televisions should only be placed on furniture designed to hold a television, such as television stands or media centers. • Televisions that are not wall mounted should still be anchored to the wall. • Mount flat-screen TVs to the wall or to furniture to prevent them from toppling over. • Follow the manufacturers instructions to secure TVs and furniture properly. • CRT televisions should only be placed on furniture designed to hold a television, and should be anchored to the wall or the TV stand. SHANE’S FOUNDATION

(CONTINUED)

• Existing furniture can be anchored with inexpensive anti-tip brackets. New furniture, such as dressers, is sold with anti-tip devices. Install them right away. • Remove items that might tempt kids to climb, such as toys and remote controls, from the top of the TV and furniture. Inspired by Shane, the CPSC’s Anchor It! campaign efforts have truly brought tip-over safety to light this year, and I am so proud that Shane’s Foundation can be a part of it. With Shane’s Foundation, I’ve been able to share Shane's story and provide resources to educate families about tip-over safety. This year, we are also raising awareness by working with Timothy Grant Jewelry for a charity golf outing on August 31 at Bridges Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates, IL. We partnered with Timothy Grant’s for this event in 2013 and raised over $17,000 for Shane’s Foundation, which has helped us to take our message to health and safety conferences to speak about tip-over prevention, to print brochures and fact sheets about safety tips, and much more. I am hoping for another incredible turnout this year. Shane’s Foundation continues to grow, and I hope we can prevent tip-over tragedies from happening to other families—all in honor and in memory of Shane. 28

TIMOTHY GRANT JEWELRY PARTNERS WITH SHANE’S FOUNDATION FOR ANNUAL GOLF OUTING

T

imothy Grant Jewelry will hold its Fifth Annual Charity Golf Outing on August 31st at Bridges of Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. and the golf outing will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. Cost of the event is $150 per person, golf included. The cost of the dinner-only guest ticket is $45 per person. A silent auction will be held during dinner with sports tickets, restaurant gift cards and jewelry included in the bidding. There will also be a surprise, live-auction item and a mystery wine table this year. Timothy Grant Jewelry raised over $13,000 for Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation during last year’s golf outing. This year, the proceeds will benefit Shane’s Foundation. Timothy Siefert, owner of Timothy Grant Jewelry, and his wife, Lisa, lost their 2-year-old son, Shane, to a furniture tip-over accident on March 14, 2011. Lisa created Shane’s Foundation in honor of Shane, in hope of raising awareness of children’s safety. “On Twitter, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tweeted that Shane’s Foundation was an inspiration for their Anchor It! campaign, which brought tip-over safety to the forefront this year. We thought it was the perfect time for Timothy Grant’s to partner with Shane’s Foundation again,” says Tim. To register or become a sponsor for Timothy Grant Jewelry’s Fifth Annual Charity Golf Outing, visit TimothyGrantJewelry.com. Registrations accepted through August 15th.

Shane’s Foundation is a registered 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the awareness and education of child safety with an emphasis on furniture tip-over prevention. Shane’s Foundation uses proceeds to provide hospitals, pediatricians, and physicians with resources to educate families on safety tips to prevent avoidable accidents. For more information, visit ShanesFoundation.org. Timothy Grant Jewelry, Ltd. is located both in Lake Zurich and Schaumburg, Illinois.

The

Adult Day Center EXPLAINED A GREAT RESOURCE FOR BOTH FAMILY AND CAREGIVER ARTICLE LINDA SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

n Adult Day Center is a non-residential facility that supports the health, nutritional needs, social support and daily living needs of adults in professionally staffed, group settings. Adult Day Center Care allows an individual to stay in their home, or the home of their loved one, instead of nursing home placement. Adult Day Care also allows an individual to engage in a variety of activities while in a social setting with their peers during the day. Adult Day Care gives caregivers the opportunity to maintain their job outside of their home while continuing to provide care to their loved one. It is also an opportunity for the caregiver to take a break from providing care to their loved ones with dementia or other chronic illnesses. Most Adult Day Centers are open Monday through Friday for a good part of the day. In most cases, you can attend one day a week or five days a week, whatever best suits your schedule. They offer a structured program that provides a variety of health and social support services to meet the medical and cognitive needs of seniors that require chronic care and supervision. Adult Day Centers provide care for 150,000 individuals each day. Family members are the majority of caregivers for disabled and impaired adults. There are some huge benefits to Adult Day Center Care such as therapeutic and health activities; exercise and socialization; and very importantly Adult Day Care may be more cost effective than hiring a caregiver during the day. In addition, the structure of a day program and the socialization provided can be a benefit to daily enrichment in the client’s life. Adult Day Centers are required to have a nurse on duty during business hours. That nurse can provide medication management as well as help with activities of daily living such as bathroom assistance and shower assistance. If the center cares for members with dementia, it is required to be a secure setting for the clients. Adult Day Care in Illinois can be funded through the Illinois Department on Aging Community Care Program as well as Veterans Administration benefits. This financial assistance can take a burden off families as they struggle with caregiver issues during the day. All Centers are also private pay if community funding is not an option. Most Adult Day Centers will be able to help with financial qualifications to one of the programs available. If you are a caregiver for someone and need a break, Adult Day Center Care may be the perfect resource to help you. Be sure to view the Center prior to enrolling and make sure it is licensed in the State of Illinois to ensure proper care. 30

2016 Infiniti QX30 Crossover

The 2016 Infiniti QX30 Crossover and Q30 Hatchback STYLISH, EFFICIENT AND FUN IN THE LUXURY MARKET

ARTICLE CHASE HAWKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he young, the hip and the affluent are the target market for the new 2016 Infiniti Q30 hatchback and 2016 Infiniti QX30 subcompact crossover. These dynamic twins should show up at Motor Werks Infiniti of Barrington as soon as next year, and we’re confident that they will hit the mark. With thrilling performance, all the latest technology features, and upscale design, it’s easy to see how younger buyers will fall in love with these two all-new models.

WHAT IT TAKES TO COMPETE

Younger buyers are looking to get into the luxury market, and they don’t necessarily want what their parents do out of a luxury car. Aggressive, bold styling, the latest technology, and fun-to-drive performance are all priorities over large size and prestige nameplates. Young buyers tend to put a much bigger premium on efficiency and lower carbon emission as well, and tend to favor living in cities where parking is difficult to come by. All of those factors lead to the 2016 Infiniti Q30 and QX30—the brand’s first compact car since the G20 debuted in 1990. These two cars are more similar than just the name: they’re effectively the same vehicle, but the Q30 hatchback is lower and more aimed at on-road convenience; while the QX30 is essentially the

34

SW Lake Lifestyle | August 2015

same vehicle with slightly more ground clearance, some rugged cladding, and all-wheel drive. The Q30 is aimed at the young urbanite who wants a sporty, smart small car. The 2016 Infiniti QX30 is aimed at that same driver who might find themselves headed camping on a long weekend where the road turns to gravel, and to those drivers who find their cities in the snow or rain belt and would benefit from additional all-wheel drive confidence. Both will get a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for around 208 hp. A continuously variable transmission will likely be used to provide plenty of miles per gallon. You’ll no doubt find the latest Infiniti InTouch infotainment system and up-to-date safety features like adaptive cruise control, a collision departure warning system, and more. All in all, these two models should be perfect for any young Chicagoland driver who wants a stylish, efficient, and fun little car. VISIT MOTOR WERKS INFINITI OF BARRINGTON TODAY

The new Q30 and QX30 at Motor Werks Infiniti, a leading Infiniti dealership serving the Chicago area, will be in stock sometime early next year. Until then, please visit at 1475 S. Barrington Rd. in Barrington, IL to drive the latest models in the Motor Werks showroom today.

Parting Thoughts

Adventure is a Nine-Letter Word WORDS ANNE POTTER RUSS

T

he word "adventure" conjures up different images for different people, and let's face it; some images are just prettier than others. For my hard-core outdoorsy friends, adventure means tackling the Appalachian Trail with three pounds of dried beans, a tarp the size of a Kleenex and a compass. Just to fluff things up a bit, they might take a change of socks. My middle-of-the-road friends have spent more money on camping gear than it will cost to put their children through college. Tent poles bent? Off to "campingstorethesizeofCleveland" to get the best nylon and titanium tent-holderupper. Oh, and don't forget some light-weight skillets in which to make the omelets and biscuits and gravy for breakfast on the portable stove, because the wood-burning fire is too much trouble, and it's hard to find sticks, any way. My powder puff family is in a whole different league. I came by my traveling/survival skills honestly. Some people say that their idea of "roughing it" is going to a Holiday Inn. Well, my parents' idea of roughing it was when the Ritz in Pasadena couldn't serve a third order of toast through room service because the kitchen had finally closed and it was afternoon.

SW Lake Lifestyle | August 2015

My dad loved to travel and my mom put up with it. And, if it involved a fun group of friends, he was game for almost anything. So, one time... and one time only... he tried camping. It was near beautiful Grand Lake in Colorado, and this group of people meant business; they wanted to be out in the beautiful night under the stars. So, my dad brought lobster to cook over the open fire. He also managed to unhook and remove the seats from someone else's circa 1968 Suburban so he and my mother didn't have to sit all the way down on the ground. My own level of adventure falls somewhere comfortably between crème anglaise and hiking in the mountains of New Mexico. I have parameters, though. The temperature must be between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit, there should be a chef at my destination - no farther than 37 minutes from where I started; and there must always be plumbing and consumable alcohol within an arm's reach. I need bug spray, sunscreen, shampoo, magazines, candles, iPods, Izods, dish soap, doggie bags, folding chairs, floaty things, ceiling fans and bungee cords, swimsuits, flip flops, blankets, guacamole and beer, aspirin, band-aids, spatulas and skewers, and a solar power supply for my iphone. And, that's just to get me 45 miles out of the city. I'll take an extra order of toast, too. Please and thank you.
