Celebrating America!
Editor’s Letter
Happy Birthday, America! I
love birthdays. And celebrating. And FIREWORKS! There is nothing better than the feeling of patriotism that wells up in my heart when I hear The Star Spangled Banner—combine our national anthem with a firework display and I’m a happy, sentimental American who can’t get enough of small-town parades, baton twirlers, bomb-pops and the Fourth of July. Be sure to check out your local area Independence Day celebrations to soak up everything there is about the upcoming holiday weekend in SW Lake County!
I also love everything about getting away—the time spent planning, packing, plotting and preparing to escape may be more important to me than the actual getaway. The anticipation of travel creates an aura of excitement that turns even the short hour-and-a-half drive north to a friend's lake house into an adventure that sustains my wanderlust from week to week as time marches on…until I read a vacation review like the one in this issue of SW Lake Lifestyle! I've already done my research and have happily booked my next vacation: I will most assuredly be upon a steamboat cruise to our as the season changes. What an amazing way to explore our country.

BROKEN EARTH ESTATE WINE OF THE MONTH The Estate Chardonnay is the perfect example of a California wine with very light body and beautiful lengthy finish. It starts with sweet tropical fruit and ends with acidity and elegant oak in the background. It has true California characteristics with slight notes of New French Oak and a creamy finish. Broken Earth Winery’s very first offshoot is located in Long Grove, Illinois. Opened in late 2014, the location offers exquisite wines from its very own vineyard in Paso Robles, California. The original name of the 2,500-acre Paso Robles ranch, Rancho Tierra Rejada, is Spanish for “land of worked earth” and was the inspiration for the name of the winery. Broken Earth has many varieties of Chardonnay from which to choose. As Broken Earth Estate Wines our Wine of the Month for July, the Estate Chardonnay is being offered at a special discount for a short time. This specific wine exhibits a lighter taste profile and is a refreshing break from the heat of the long summer days.

Prom Gowns and the Glass Slipper Project ZENGELER CLEANERS MAKES PROM DREAMS COME TRUE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY CAROL LEVIN
F
or the 13th year, Zengeler Cleaners helped to give Chicago-area high school girls the chance to go to prom, collecting a record number of nearly 5,000 prom dresses, plus shoes, jewelry, handbags and other accessories for the Glass Slipper Project, a local charity that gives prom gowns free to students who cannot otherwise afford them. Many of these beautiful gowns originally sold for hundreds of dollars and many Zengeler Cleaners customers purchase and donate brand new dresses, as well. The donations collected by the 158-year old family-owned and operated cleaners increases each year, with this year's donations valued at approximately $1.5 million. "So many young women now have the special opportunity to enjoy their prom this year, thanks to those who made these generous donations," says Tom Zengeler, president, Zengeler Cleaners. "The generosity of students donating their own dresses, as well as total strangers who purchased and donated brand new dresses is awe inspiring, and truly amazing." Zengeler Cleaners cleans, presses and makes minor repairs to the dresses, and then packs their vans for delivery to the distribution location—all services provided at no charge. The formal dresses and accessories are then distributed free to students at Glass Slipper "boutiques," where each student re14

ceives individual assistance from a volunteer "personal shopper" to choose the prom attire of their dreams. This year's "boutique" shopping opportunities were held on two consecutive Saturdays during prom season at Price Elementary School in Chicago. Since 1999, the project has helped nearly 30,000 high school women to find their perfect prom dress. In 13 years, Zengeler Cleaners has collected more than 34,000 dresses, the most of any collection point involved in the drive. In the last few months, students at area high schools, along with Zengeler customers and several other local businesses, dropped off dresses and accessories at each of eight Zengeler Cleaners stores. Some dresses are brand new, with tags still attached. "We are proud that Zengeler Cleaners continues to help deserving students enjoy their prom each year," says Ray Mullen, executive director, Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills (GLMV) Chamber of Commerce, of which Zengeler is a long-time member. Plans for next year's prom dress collections are already underway. Carol Levin is the public relations director, GLMV Chamber of Commerce. They left to work in Oak Ridge, Tennessee or "Atomic City," a makeshift town that existed to help America create the atomic bomb before our enemies could.
To most of the world, this town did not exist and they had no idea what people were doing there. Thousands of civilians, many of them young women from small towns across the South, were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. Drawing on the voices of the women who lived it, The Girls of Atomic City rescues a remarkable, forgotten chapter of American history from obscurity. This important book is the Ela Area Public Library's One Book, One Reading Community selection for 2015. It reads almost like fiction, as Denise Kiernan has a great way of bringing these stories to life. You will be entertained but also learn a great deal about this period of the history of our country. And for those who commute, the book is excellent on audiobook, too. Pick up a copy at the Ela Area Public Library today. Leah L. Citizens for Conservation Sets New Record NATIVE PLANT, SHRUB AND TREE SALE IS A TRIUMPH ARTICLE SAM OLIVER | PHOTOGRAPHY DONNA BOLZMAN
T
he Citizens for Conservation Native Plant, Shrub and Tree Sale set new records this year during its annual sale. According to Plant Sale Chairman Ginger Underwood, gardeners from the greater Barrington area, and many communities in Northern Illinois, the North Shore, suburbs south of Chicago, as far west as Rockford and from Wisconsin bought record numbers of native plants for their landscapes. “We sold 15,366 forbs (flowering plants) woodland plants, ferns and grasses, 281 shrubs and 209 trees,” Underwood reports. “There were seven species of milkweed, a total of 4,179 plants, included in the forbs total which we sold at near wholesale prices in order to encourage gardeners to plant milkweed to support the dwindling monarch butterfly population.” A total of 1,446 volunteer hours went into making the sale a success. An anticipated feature of the annual sale is the number of experienced volunteers on hand to offer advice about gardening with native plants. Asked to what she attributed the continuing and increased interest in the sale, Underwood said that in addition to the expert advice offered on the sale days, CFC’s Community Education programs and their Habitat Corridors home visits raise awareness of the importance and value of native plants.

SW Lake Lifestyle | July 2015
The 2015 sale was moved across the road from CFC Headquarters to the barn area of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. "The move made a huge difference in terms of parking safety and space for all the plants," Underwood says. "The crew at Good Shepherd Hospital was wonderful, they couldn’t have been more helpful.” In addition to thanking her expert and hard working committee that worked for months preparing for the sale, she pointed out the contributions of 2050 Design that made a big difference by providing pre-sale online ordering capability and more efficient check-out for gardeners eager to get their plants in the ground.

Camping, Made Easy NEW OPTIONS OFFER CONVENIENCE AND COMFORT OF HOME
T
hese days you don’t have to own an RV, a sleeping bag or a tent to go camping. That’s because campgrounds across the country are giving guests a chance to sleep surrounded by nature – but in a cozy bed with a roof over their heads. From park models to yurts, both campgrounds and campers are embracing new lodging options that offer the convenience and comforts of home – from basic kitchen appliances and linens to cable television and Wi-Fi. Consider them your home away from home in the great outdoors. If you want to think outside of the tent for your next—or first— camping trip, try one of these popular accommodations: Park Models. On the outside, park models often resemble a compact cabin or cottage, many complete with a front porch perfect for soaking up the campground’s natural beauty. On the inside, they offer up all of the comforts of home. Park models feature smart layouts that maximize every square inch so guests get to enjoy a living room, kitchen, bedroom and full bathroom and, in some cases, a loft. Camping Cabins. Perfect for groups big and small, camping cabins come in all varieties and offer something for everyone. Whether you want a four bedroom luxury escape with sweeping lake views or a compact rustic retreat tucked away in the woods, you’re covered. Camping cabins are also a great option if you’re traveling with a group that includes campers and non-campers. Everyone can enjoy the outdoors together by day, but when the sun goes down your

more outdoorsy folks can pop a tent and those who don’t want to rough it can retreat to the comfort of the cabin. Rental RVs. You don’t have to own an RV – or even drive one for that matter – to take advantage of all of the convenient features an RV offers. You can enjoy an efficient kitchen and bath, cozy sleeping spaces, and room to kick back and relax with an already parked rental RV. But be warned – once you try an RV, you might be hooked. There’s a reason they’ve been around for more than 100 years! Yurts. Easily identified by their circular shape, yurts have been used for thousands of years. While the early models were made of felt and wood, modern yurts are made of high-tech materials that create a comfortable, yet sturdy retreat. Perfect for a group seeking an unconventional camping experience, a yurt provides a completely unique take on enjoying the outdoors as well as plenty of space for the gang to spread out. Unique Accommodations. Ever wanted to spend the night in a vintage Airstream? How about a treehouse or caboose? What about a covered wagon or teepee? If you’re the adventurous type, maybe these unique accommodations will give you the nudge you need to give camping a try. You’ll be surprised by what today’s camping experience has to offer. Want to learn more about these options or are you ready to book your trip? Visit GoCampingAmerica.com/FindPark and click the kinds of accommodations you want to explore.

UPDATES TO HELP ADD FUTURE VALUE ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI
I
t takes money to make money, but is the cost really worth it? Yes—if you pick the right home repairs! Even if you’re not planning to sell any time soon, you’ll want to think about the types of upgrades that home buyers want to when purchasing. When it does come time to sell, you’ll be glad when you see the increased value. Here is a list of the important projects that will bring you substantial rewards and help to increase the value of your home.
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE CURB APPEAL.
It is the first impression anyone gets of your home. You could lose a buyer before they walk in the door if the exterior is not attractive. Painting the exterior of your home will bring an estimated 51 percent return when you sell and landscaping could help net an additional $2,000 (typically a 250 percent ROI). THE KITCHEN SELLS THE HOUSE.
Upgrade to popular steel or energy efficient appliances. Replace the backsplash as well as outdated wallpaper or window treatments. Be sure to clean every nook and cranny and make sure it smells pleasant and inviting.

A fresh coat of paint for the interiors will also yield you about a 51 percent return when selling. Be sure you to use neutral colors. If you are not looking to sell for a while, you’ll want to fit your taste—after all, you’re the one living there. Remember that most buyers will not have the same preferences as you and could be turned off by your love of hot pink or lime green.

DON’T FORGET THE PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL.
Energy efficient models for both heating/cooling, as well as toilets, are highly sought after and will save you money while you enjoy them. These can cut your utility costs, in some cases, by half! Replacing or repairing windows will help as well. Savvy buyers are looking for ways to save money as well so they will jump to the houses with these features before the others. You could be looking at a return of up to 181 percent when selling with these features. Summer is considered home improvement season. Plan carefully before jumping into projects that will cost you time and money without the benefit of adding value to your home. It’s also a good idea to consult a real estate agent about your plans. Any good agent will be happy to offer free advice about how to plan for future buyers and save you money down the road.

Rehabilitation
Therapy Benefits A VITAL ROLE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS ARTICLE LEANNA BAHWELL
R
ehabilitation therapy is described as the “therapeutic, healing treatment that a patient receives after any kind of illness or injury.” The severity of the patient condition may vary, but the goals are always the same: to help patients get back to or as close to prior level of functional as possible. Rehabilitation involves a plan of care with very individualized, obtainable goals developed by therapists with patient input. Ultimately, for success with a rehab program, commitment is required from both the patient and the multi-disciplinary team. Whether recovering from a stroke, car accident, or knee replacement surgery, there would likely be many different types of therapies involved with the case. Physical therapy (PT) involves things like bed mobility, transfer, ambulation, stair, and balance training. PT also does a lot of work with strengthening and range of motion of the lower extremities. Occupational therapy (OT) involves activities of daily living (ADLs) like feeding, grooming, hygiene, dressing, toileting and bathing. OT also does a lot of work with strengthening and range of motion of the upper extremities. Speech therapy (ST) involves mainly training in improving either cognition and/or swallow-

ing. Respiratory therapy (RT) involves improving breathing and endurance through pulmonary rehabilitation, which may include supplemental oxygen use to nebulizer treatments. Rehab therapists work jointly on a patient’s case in order to manage an effective rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation therapy can take place in many types of settings, but usually follows this path of care: acute hospital therapy, in-patient rehab therapy, home health therapy, and outpatient clinic therapy. The length of time at each of the levels is dependent upon severity of condition, rate of healing, medical stability, and progress within the therapy plan of care. For some, the entire course of therapy may only last weeks, but for some others the full course of therapy could take months to years. Rehab therapists also play a role in recommending any necessary adaptations/modifications to allow patients to compensate for limitations. For example, physical therapists may recommend an assistive device like a walker to allow a patient to walk with less assistance. An occupational therapist might recommend that grab bars be installed in a patient bathroom to ensure safety with showering. Rehab therapy plays a vital role
in setting patients up for future success even after they have been discharged from therapy services. As noted, there are many different facets to rehabilitation therapy and many benefits that can be gleaned from the process. In general, patients that have participated in a rehab program leave it with improved health, strength, movement and safety. In addition, patients graduate with less pain and more confidence. Rehabilitation therapy has been proven through research and outcomes to impact patients lives in a positive way in which individuals can maximize potential to live their lives to the fullest. Parting Thoughts
Time to Cancel the Swimsuit Issue WORDS DENISE SNODELL
A
s a woman, I think bathing suit shopping is a nightmare. But not the way you would expect. The horror I experience has nothing to do with what I see in the fitting room. It’s what I hear: Body-bashing from a chorus of unfamiliar voices. Instant, TMZ-worthy critiques. I have come to believe the back areas of retail stores are actually self-loathing chat rooms. “Look at my thighs! They’re huuuuge!” “I’m paler than a stack of fresh printer paper.” “Cellulite Central!” “Side boobs.” “Salute my arm flags.” Cut it out, my dears. Just cut it out. I’ve noticed two common themes in this constant commentary. 1. Shape—too big here, too small there, etcetera. Tons and tons of etcetera. 2. Skin—too pale, too loose, too whatever. As I write this, I am 7 pounds lighter than I was the previous month. But it’s not due to an advertised diet hawked by celebrities who, for the past decade, have been losing the same 50 pounds over and over again. (Yeah, that “system” works.) My quick dip to “swimsuit ready” arrived without intention: I was double-whammied by several weeks of insane busy-ness and a horrible stomach virus. That smack-down did more than wind the scale back; it left me weak for a large chunk of time. I missed out on a big Memorial Day weekend. And just after that summer kick-off, I had to literally prop myself up for two special birthday celebrations. I leaned on door frames while conjuring auto pilot smiles. My appetite was gone. I missed out on good food and energetic frolic. I’ll never get those days back. 34
SW Lake Lifestyle | July 2015
The experience was a little reminder of what’s important. Ladies, if you can propel yourself around a room or alongside a pool or across a sandy beach this summer, your body is just right. If you can hug your family and friends with your socalled arm flags, you are beautiful and you are lucky. If you can bite into a sandwich or scoop up a salad with gusto, just do it with gratitude and no apologies. And what about our pre-determined skin tones? I think dissatisfaction with any shade in the human spectrum is such an arbitrary standard of “beauty.” I don’t understand it when I see people baking for endless hours by sun or bulb. I was born on the fair scale—my mother is an Irish beauty. I’m totally fine with this genetic nod to alabaster. No “correction” needed. If my legs blend with paint chips from the Sherwin Williams egg shell collection, the world will have to deal with it, not me. I say, PFFT—the universal word for shrug. After growing up with brothers and raising sons, I know this shrug word well. And I have a strong suspicion men’s fitting rooms echo with pffts. Guys who might have over-pursued the other kind of six-pack (liquid/hops) might discover they have to “upgrade” their swim trunk size from last year. “Ah, well,” I’ll bet they think, “Time to cut out the fries and move more. Pfft.” Then, they buy their suits with maybe a little extra resolve, but always with joyful swimming pool cannonballs on their immediate agendas. I like that scenario. Sisters, maybe we should all take a cue and wear our tankinis like a man.
