Publisher’s Letter
Welcome to June.

T
he month we celebrate Father’s Day, the beginning of summer, the end of the school year and now, with this magazine, I celebrate my own anniversary. It seems that June is the perfect month to introduce myself to you. One year ago, I began work on what would be an extremely educational and sometimes trying new venture when I started SW Lake Lifestyle. I have been asked many times, “Why SW Lake?” “What does it mean?” “Why here?” We mail to North Barrington, Hawthorn Woods, Long Grove, Kildeer, Deer Park and Lake Zurich—all located in Southwest Lake County. The Why. While I grew up in Arlington Heights, many of my memories as a kid are of spending time in the SW Lake area. I was always cruising through on Route 12, going to the beaches in Wauconda, boating on the Chain or skiing at Wilmot. My dad’s best friend owned the property that is now the entrance to Wynstone, and we would visit him often to shoot clay pigeons and find fresh produce at his farm stand. We picked pumpkins at Route 12 and Old Rand. On Sundays we would go to the Village Tavern of Long Grove to listen to ragtime music and eat sundaes. Our mission is simple: we hope to play a small role in helping the community flourish, by producing a private magazine filled with news and special events specifically from your surrounding area. On many levels we operate differently than your typical magazine—one of the most exciting facets of our publication is that it truly belongs to the community. Not only is the magazine exclusively for and about the residents, it is the true pulse of what is happening and important to you, your family and your community. I sincerely hope you continue to find SW Lake Lifestyle informing and entertaining. Looking forward to seeing you around SW Lake this summer!

Home Matters
Summer is Here IS YOUR HOME VACATION READY? ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
N
o one needs to tell you how important your home is. After all, home is where the heart is. It’s where you live, where your family is, and it keeps you secure. But when you’re away from home, you need to keep it secure. The last thing you’ll want to do while having fun is worry needlessly. Here are some important safety tips to keep your home in perfect working order while you and your family enjoy your vacation!
DON’T TWEET ABOUT YOUR TRIP
With all the current technology options out there to track your location, it’s easier than ever to tell everyone when you’re not at home. No matter how secure you might think an online site is, history has proven that it is not always the case. While you might be excited to tell everyone all the details about your upcoming trip or post pictures of family feet relaxing by the pool, this tells everyone that your home and possessions are unguarded—just wait until you return to share the joys of your vacation, although it’s better to still maintain some level of privacy about your return. Be sure to turn off the volume on your home phone so the ringing won’t signal an opportunity to passersby and change your voice mail greeting to say you’re out of town. CLEAR GUTTERS, DOWNSPOUTS AND DRAINS
When water overflows from its proper channels, it can seep under siding and flood the basement.
SECURE THE GARAGE
If you are leaving the car at home, park it outside, against the garage door, to block access. Remove garage door remotes from the car and unplug the electric door opener (the box unit attached to the garage ceiling), so the door can’t be opened while you’re away. Make sure to lock the car and garage doors. STOP ALL DELIVERIES AND PICKUPS
TRIM TREE LIMBS
Cut branches that extend over your house, particularly any that are dying or dead-the ones that are bare when they should have leaves in case there’s a storm while you’re on vacation.
Have your mail held while you’re away. You can sign up online at HoldMail.USPS.com. Don’t forget to cancel garbage pickup and newspaper deliveries, too. Overstuffed mailboxes, full garbage cans and loose papers are a surefire way to alert everyone you are away and your home is not being monitored.
ELIMINATE EASY ACCESS
According to statistics from the FBI, 61 percent of burglars use force to gain entry. “But they’ll often look for open doors and windows first,” says Jim Towns. Triple check that all door and window locks are working (including windows on the second story), and repair any broken glass, particularly in basement windows. Bring in any hidden keys and never leave keys with anyone whom you don't explicitly trust. 14
SW Lake Lifestyle | June 2015
WATCH THE WATER
After the cycle has finished, empty thedishwasher and then leave the dishwasher door open. That will allow the interior to dry so it won’t smell musty by the time you get home. If a hose to your dishwasher or washing machine happens to crack or come loose while you’re away, a flood might occur so also turn off the water supply to those two appliances. For the dishwasher, the lever handle is usu-
ally located under the sink. For the washing machine, look for a valve switch behind the machine. Flush the toilet and leave the lid up (just this once!) so you don’t come home to icky, stagnant water. TURN OFF SMALL APPLIANCES
A power surge can damage these items or even cause a fire. Unplug any small appliances and electronics that aren’t plugged into a surge protector (such as the toaster and coffeemaker) and set all surge protector switches to off. ALWAYS ARM THE ALARM
Notify your security company that you’ll be away. Give a family member or friend your alarm code, the security company’s phone number, your itinerary, and your contact numbers. Press the “test” button on your smoke alarms to make sure they work, and change the battery if necessary. KEEP THE A/C GOING
It may sound like a waste of money and energy, but a warm temperature indoors can cause mold and mildew to grow in just a few days. Set the air conditioner to 82 degrees Fahrenheit and your house will stay cool enough to prevent both. LIGHTS ON LIKE YOU’RE HOME
The kitchen is usually in the back of the house (a favorite spot for break-ins) so it often has no plug-in lights. Simply move a lamp into the kitchen and plug into a timer that you can set. Be sure to have several turned on in the front part of the home, and possibly the front door light as well (which will require an outdoor timer). Be sure to set them from dusk to dawn. Local Spotlight American Sale in Lake Zurich
ARTICLE LAURIE WILHOIT PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL SHORTEN
A
merican Sale of Lake Zurich opened in 2014 in the Deer Path Court Shopping Center on Rand Road. Walking into the location feels a bit like a vacation dream come to life with its amazing in-ground pool display surrounded by a beautiful brick and travertine tile patio. The store has an impressive selection of patio furniture, fire pits, hot tubs, above-ground swimming pools, grills, billiard tables, backyard play-sets, seasonally available Halloween costumes and Chicagolands largest selection of the finest artificial Christmas trees and holiday décor. The company, currently run by three generations of the Jones family, started in 1959, when Bob Jones Sr. and his wife, Dolores, opened their first store selling toys. Bob was a salesman from the beginning—his career started when he began selling soda pop to graveyard workers at the Evergreen Park cemetery at seven years old. As a young entrepreneur he also sold flags, opened a Hot Dog stand and continued trying new things to enhance his businesses. Within two 18
SW Lake Lifestyle | June 2015
years of opening, Bob decided to expand for the holiday season and added Christmas merchandise. Soon after, Pool and Patio departments were added for summer season and, with that, started todays American Sale. Fifty-six years later, American Sale is now known as one of the nations best home recreation and holiday stores with nine locations locally, and products internationally available through online service. Family has always been a mainstay of the business and now includes Bob Jones Sr., his son Bob Jr. and daughter Sandra, as well as Bob Jr.’s daughter, Erica. Bob Jones Jr. has been working in the stores since he was age seven and continued throughout his high school and college careers. Both Bob Jr. and Sandra began working with the business after graduating college. For many families, working together can be difficult; for the Jones family it simply just works. Bob Jones Sr., Bob Jr. and Sandra have worked together more than 30 years. They have traveled the world together, meeting vendors and researching the best products to carry and sell. They feel it has been an honor to work with so many wonderful employees and thousands of customers worldwide. Their secret to making their family business a success includes everyone knowing their roll; they all enjoy working hard, sharing responsibility and contributing to their family business. “(It’s) Easier said than done, but we were all raised with this example. It’s who we are,” says Bob Jr. The Jones family embraces the golden rule to “treat people the way you want to be treated” and it shows in their impressive customer service reviews and the American Sale Lowest Price Guarantee policy. American Sale doesn’t have a “slow season” and yet the family still enjoys the holidays together. Bob Jr. said the Fourth of July has become his favorite time of year. By then, the big summer sales rush is waning and there still a lot of summer left for him to enjoy. His ability to enjoy the busiest days as much as any other day helps with daily challenges in the retail world. He likes to remember the quote, "Don’t strive for or expect an easy life." “Challenges are the spice of life that adds character, perspective and contrast," he says. "They allow one to recognize what is truly important.” It is very much apparent that the Jones family, with their ongoing success and company growth, continue to recognize what is truly important as each generation strives to strengthen not only the business but their family bond, integrity and dedication to complete customer satisfaction.

he sounds of great music have been echoing through Long Grove every Sunday during the summer months for the past nine years. Now, to celebrate their tenth anniversary, The Long Grove Arts & Music Council is presenting the best of the best from seasons past, offering exceptional performances by a wide and varied range of great musicians. The 2015 season begins Sunday, July 5th featuring harmonica legend, Howard Levy, accompanied by guitarist, Chris Siebold, Somehow Howard has managed to fit Long Grove into his ex-

tremely busy schedule every summer for the past five years. If he isn’t playing with Bela Fleck or composing concertos for the harmonica, he is on world tours or entertaining audiences on Prairie Home Companion. Each Sunday in July and August at 4 p.m. for eight weeks, world-class talent comes to Long Grove, all free of charge. In addition to Howard Lev y, musical guests this year include singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer, Harpeth Rising, Vance Gilbert, Krista Detor, April Verch, Special Consensus Blue-
grass and finally The Siegel/Schwall Band with Sam Lay who is not only celebrating his 80th birthday, but also his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Long Grove Arts & Music Council is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 2006 by volunteers dedicated to bringing a variety of musical, visual, and performing arts to the Village of Long Grove. The motivation to start the group came from the desire to offer something unique to Long Grove. “There are summer concerts throughout the Chicago area, but most present rock and roll cover bands," says Founder and Director Tobin Fraley. "There’s nothing wrong with a great rock band, but we wanted something different here since Long Grove is such a unique place. So we started the Arts & Music Council.” Long Grove resident and stage manager for the group, Reid Olson, adds, “I can’t believe we’re able to get this level of talent here in our small village. Many of these musicians are Grammy winners, but they just love playing in Long Grove. Maybe it’s the setting or maybe is just a great place to play music, or both.” In addition to the musical offerings, the LGAMC has helped to set up the Long Grove Artists’ Guild. The Guild presents the work of a number of local artists plus they host a variety of themed art shows each year. One of the most popular is Our Pets, Past & Present, an exhibition of work by artists from around Chicago. Exhibit organizer, Georgia Cawley, notes,“This is an extremely popular show. We have artists from Naperville to Waukegan and from everywhere in between presenting their work. The opening night is always crowded with art lovers.” Fraley adds that the LGAMC would like to expand into showing classic films on Towner Green along with showcasing short films by local filmmakers, but that it’s a matter of resources and finding the volunteers to help. “We know this will happen at some point, but for right now we’re concentrating on music and art.” And as for the concert, Fraley encourages attendees to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the air of a summer Sunday afternoon listening to wonderful music. All shows are considered family friendly for adults and children alike. Treats are available at each concert including the ever popular “Friendship” bread baked by LGAMC member Jane Primack along with iced tea and lemonade provided by the local community minded coffee house, Beans & Leaves. The LGAMC is dedicated to bringing our local communities closer together and to giving Long Grove residents and the residents of neighboring communities a chance to discover the treats that can be found right in their own back yard. Please note that the LGAMC relies exclusively on donations and the work of a dedicated group of volunteers, so all contributions are greatly appreciated.

portunity to order a variety of catered food from Enzo & Lucia’s, The Long Grove Café and Kawa3 Sushi. This month we have decided to pair our Quadrant Gold with one of Enzo & Lucia’s heavenly dishes. The dish of choice is the Chicken Piccata. It is made with farm fresh chicken breast and is sautéed in a lemon butter sauce, with Italian capers and roasted red peppers. The delightful and flavorful Chicken Piccata heightens the delicate, smooth crisp flavors of the Quadrant Gold making it a harmonious experience. The one accompanied by the other, compliments each other like two instruments playing music together. This homemade Italian splendor is the perfect match for the French and Spanish composition of such beautiful melodic notes of the Quadrant Gold. Come to Broken Earth Winery to experience these two flavors together. You can order in Enzo & Lucia’s while enjoying a bottle of Quadrant Gold. Also for the month of June, Enzo & Lucia’s will be offering the Quadrant Gold as one of their select wines to enjoy. So if you need a place to go to pull back and relax with a glass of wine, then hurry on by to Broken Earth Winery in Long Grove where you will be greeted with a smile. We hope to see you soon! CRUISING THE DANUBE
BUDAPEST TO NUREMBERG BY RIVER BOAT ARTICLE ALLIE BIENIARZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
R
iver cruising is an amazing way to see the world! We recently had the opportunity to experience this fabulous mode of travel and found that it’s also an affordable and inclusive way to visit wonderful destinations all around Europe. Our journey began in the beautiful Hungarian capital of Budapest. The city of Budapest has two sides, Buda and Pest, each with its own personality. Consider spending an additional day or two in this wonderful city to truly explore. There are a number of hotels conveniently located along the lovely Danube. Finding it easy to walk the city, we enjoyed local restaurants and visited St. Stephen's Basilica while on foot. We had a lovely evening “illumination” dinner cruise the first night and the following morning was spent listening to the fascinating history of Hungary while on a guided sightseeing tour of the Parliament House. After an 26

easy transfer from our city hotel to our riverboat, a wonderful buffet lunch was served as we prepared to set sail down the Danube. That evening, the boat featured traditional Hungarian dancing and local dancers entertained as we cruised the river and enjoyed the beautiful lights of Budapest from our new vantage point. The next morning was a tour of Hospital in the Rock as we sailed toward Vienna. Created in the caverns during World War II, the former emergency hospital and secret nuclear bunker is part of an approximately six mile stretch of interconnected caves and cellars beneath Buda Castle Hill. It is now is a fascinating museum to explore. Upon arriving in Vienna, we had many tour options and chose to visit the country of Slovakia and its beautiful capital city, Bratislava. We were treated to a city tour highlighting the rich history of the area and enjoy lunch and a little shopping
around Bratislava before heading back to our floating hotel. In the evening, we were treated to a classical concert in the beautiful Palace Liechtenstein. One morning we docked in the beautiful small town of Durnstein. This sleepy little town is very quaint and a great place to try a local bakery, visit local churches and shop for trinket and gifts to bring home. Some of our fellow cruisers choose to take the 22 kilometer bike ride from Durnstein to Melk to meet up with the river boat. In Melk, the tour of the Benedictine Abbey was magnificent with beautiful grounds and a fabulous library including medieval manuscripts. The following day after a walking tour of Passau, we traveled via motor coaches to our next destination. Now in Salzburg, with the magnificent mountains all around, we enjoyed a fabulous tour that included visiting various locations where The Sound of Music was filmed. The final day of our wonderful river cruise tour, we arrived in the medieval
city of Regensburg, Germany. Our tour here included a visit to Weltenburg Abbey accessible by local ferry. As we sailed through the scenic Danube Gorge, the views became perfect photo opportunities for the photographers in our group. Our trip concluded in Nuremberg, Germany. Upon disembarking our cruise, we were treated to a tour of both the old and new city areas of Nuremberg as we explored the walled area of the city. Many travelers take advantage of the close proximity to cities like Frankfurt, Berlin and Prague and extend their travel to include many other parts of Europe. The entire River Cruise experience was wonderful. We can’t wait to go again. Perhaps you, too, will be river cruising soon down the beautiful European Rivers! Allie Bieniarz is a travel consultant at Lake Zurich Travel. Allie, along with her co-worker Tammy Turpin, experienced her river cruise in

Parting Thoughts
FATHER DAYS WORDS MICHAEL WILLISON
T
here is a box on the kitchen table. Flat, just under a foot long, and gift wrapped as if by an apoplectic crocodile. There is no question as to the contents of this box on this day in June. There never is. It is a tie. The annual difference is only width or length, wideness of stripes or plaids, boldness of colors, or the peculiar material that flitted briefly as defined by the Botany 500 catalog (I’m looking at you, knitted sock tie). Dad. Dad received a tie because Dad needed many ties. Dad knows this. Looking back on it now, I can see the day unfolding as they so often did with a scattershot breakfast: Mom first, my sister, Dad, then me, many hours later with the cold bacon and clean up duty. By then, Dad had run off on a mischievous errand that was most certain to achieve one of the following: 1. Mom going through the following set of outbursts brought to you buy the extemporaneous purchase of a yellow (yellow!) Pontiac Firebird: Laughter, Confusion, Rage, Indignation 2. The children ruining within less than 2 hours that which Dad has returned with, featuring items such as: A Bose 901 speak-
er system, The VCR, The Yellow Pontiac Firebird, Tennis 3. New Golf Clubs, 4. A time-share in Florida His return, after the dust settled, meant it was time for Some Kind of Grilling™, no matter what time it was, and the sampling of beer by me while my Dad pretended not to notice as he fussed with burgers, pork chops, or the shucking of corn. Later in life I’d occasionally come across the sip immaculata that reminded so much of those stolen moments and a first glimpse of an ever-waxing nostalgia for simple things, or at least the impression that things were easy. Dinner would be fast. Mother would make us all sit for 20 minutes. 25 maybe. Dad would pretend not to remember it was Father’s Day and say he needed to mow the lawn, clean the gutters, dig a moat, and Mom would loudly object and “the kids have something for you,” while the tie and another more expertly wrapped tie (sister), sat with a card from her. From his wife. Addressed to “Bear,” a name I never heard them say, but often saw on envelopes containing cards I never was allowed to view. I loved this secret
and that they shot a look to one another or tried not to, but did anyway, and Mom would gather herself and suggest he open our gifts. The next hour would be spent with negotiations over which tie my father would wear to work the next day and who would get what for being slighted and how it would impact next year and where we would get to go to college as a result. There were days like these, Father Days. I thought that they were for him, that Dad’s needed to be rewarded, thanked and reminded that they are loved. I thought, at times, that it was a burden for us all, that no one really cared, especially him, and that we should just not bother at all since he, of all people, didn’t really want any of the attention. As it turns out, those days were for me. For us. Because as my Dad now sits in a care and research facility for Alzheimer’s patients, and as we all struggle with how to manage, how to manage him, and how to manage this life when things happen to people that deserve more, or better, I want those days. Your endearing and everlasting gift to my sister and me were those days when you were allowed to be you, and we thought you were having a laugh. 364 days a year you worried about providing a better and safe life for us, but for a few hours every year we all saw you as a young husband, as a free-wheeling single man, as the teenager your own father worried about, and as the kid inside it all, draped in decades of ties. Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
