Editor’s Letter
Celebrating October.
T
his month brings with it a beautiful change of scenery to SW Lake County as the peak of fall color occurs mid-October. The shorter days lead to cool evenings and the crisp air makes outdoor activities even more enjoyable. The celebration of autumn is everywhere as our schedules fill-up with football games and apple-picking fun; Halloween plans are made and costumes finalized; and the pumpkin becomes as ubiquitous as Starbucks.
The feeling of change and celebration is here at SW Lake Lifestyle as well. You may have noticed we’ve grown a bit since our first issue and we’d like to thank our many friends and sponsors from the community that made this growth possible. Your continued support of local businesses and area events is a true example of celebrating community. SW Lake Lifestyle will continue to do the same as we endeavor to bring interesting, new and pertinent content in our celebration of your community. We look forward to your suggestions for upcoming issues. Please continue to share your thoughts and story ideas about your school, church and group’s events in our community—it is our pleasure to join in your stories and celebrations.

Tailgating Takes A Different Turn THE LGAG'S BACK-SEAT GALLERY & TRUNK SHOW DEBUT ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY GEORGIA CAWLEY
T
he inspiration for such an event came after an artist friend stopped at my house after an art class to show me what she had been working on, her paintings propped up in the back seat of her car. I teased her about her “back-seat gallery.” It was fun and informal to stand there looking, laughing, and discussing art. We decided the experience would be great fun to share with others. What a simple way to set up an art show! No framing. No hanging. Just pull up, park, and open your doors! Look. Laugh. Talk art. Talk life. Have a bite to eat. Maybe even pull out a canvas or sketchpad and do a little art together. Perhaps even sell or trade some art! At the end of the day, close the doors, wave goodbye and drive away home. The “Back-Seat Gallery” idea was born. This event is a Gathering of Artist Friends, invited by Long Grove Artist Guild Members (LGAG), to share art with each other and with the public. These artist friends have to have a good sense of humor and sense of adventure to be a part of the Long Grove Artists Guild’s “1st Back-Seat Gallery & Trunk Show." Artwork will be sold through the Long Grove Arts & Music Council and 20 percent of the proceeds from each sale will be donated by the artist to this 501c3 organization. Food & Wine
Wine and Football ARTICLE PAULA J. GLASSEL OF BROKEN EARTH WINERY LONG GROVE
F
ootball season is in full force come October, and is usually synonymous with beer. The days are starting to get crisp and game parties/ tailgates includes warmer comfort foods like chili, chicken wings, grilled/ smoked meats, bratwurst, richer cheeses. If you prefer wine, stop forcing yourself to down ale that is less satisfying for you! The sport is all about teamwork, so here are suggestions for your next huddle. Based on the time-honored rule of matching sweet to spicy, consider some of the lighter whites to take the heat off. There’s a reason Germany is known for Riesling – it’s fabulous with brats, grainy mustard and tangy sauerkraut. Just in time – our much loved Broken Earth Riesling is back in stock! Another white wine option for brats, as well as chicken wings, is Viognier. The Viognier grape yields a highly aromatic wine; you’ll notice stonefruit notes like peach and apricots along with the floral quality of honeysuckle. This is why many people tend to explain Viognier as “sweet,” but, really, it’s a dry white! Paso Robles, California is home to Broken Earth Winery and the area is known for its Rhone-style wines; add in our Australian winemaker, Chris Cameron, and you have the trifecta of origin, grape and maker for a white called Diablo Blanco. Perhaps consider a lightly oaked Chardonnay from Broken Earth Estate to balance the chicken wings. Our Chardonnays characteristically carry overtones of melon, vanilla, a bit of spice – and the Estate has notes of apple. However, if the wings are super spicy, remember the rule and reverse back to a Riesling or Viognier! Chili and burgers, as well as heartier yellow cheeses, pair up to any one of our Syrahs. Diablo Rosada is Syrah aged with 20 percent Viognier – this brightens up the wine but doesn’t kill the pepper! If you’d like something a bit less bold and spicy, consider the Broken Earth Grenache, or the Pull Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend. Smoked meats and sausage have become front line for party and snack fare, and can stand up to a bigger, bolder red wine. “Brambly” or “briary” are terms you’ll hear for wines like Zinfandel (no, not the
14
SW Lake Lifestyle | October 2015
White Zinfandel – the whole grape with all its dark coloring) and Petite Sirah. Think of berries that grow on bushes with protective thorns such as blackberries and black raspberries. Vineyard Select Zinfandel is great for the line-up due to its dense body with big black cherry and peppery style; the Diablo Negro is 100 percent Petite Sirah with brambly, intense berries and roasted coffee notes. Intimidation may be part of the game of football but don’t back down when it comes to wine over beer! Any of these selections will take you over the finish line.

Leave a Book, Take a Book NEW LITTLE FREE LIBRARY DONATED IN LAKE ZURICH
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods is always on the lookout for projects that will impact the communities they serve. An article on “Little Free Libraries” in The Rotarian magazine last year prompted them to join this grass roots literacy project. Now they have funded, acquired, and installed a new Little Free Library at the Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich. Little Free Library is based on the honor system encouraging anyone to take a book, leave a book. Not only does the Little Free Library encourage people to share their favorite stories, it also aims to build a sense of community and spark conversation. Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that has more than 10,000 Little Free Libraries in 50 countries. Rotary Clubs have a long tradition of supporting literacy projects across the world and in our local communities. The project was initiated and organized by Rotary Club member, Jim Dopler. He and fellow Rotarian, Don Biciste, both of Kildeer, installed the library in June. This location makes the Little Free Library available to the thousands of area residents that use the Foglia YMCA on an annual basis. The library was initially stocked with about 30 books that the Rotary Club filled from members collections. Now that the Little Free Library is installed and available for the public to enjoy, the Rotary Club hopes the project will further encourage reading while also bringing the surrounding communities even closer together. The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich also supports the project, adding books to the Library as space permits. Valerie Stern, Public Information Manager, is the contact for the Library. Stop by the Foglia YMCA, located at 1025 N. Old McHenry Road, Lake Zurich, to take a book or leave a book. Additional information about the LFL program is available at LittleFreeLibrary.org. Additional information about the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer, Hawthorn Woods is available at RCLG.org. The Rotary Club meets weekly on Tuesday mornings at 7:15 a.m. at The Grove Country Club in Long Grove. 16

LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES
DO-IT-YOURSELF LIBRARIES IN OUR COMMUNITY What is a Little Free Library? It is box that can be of any shape or size. The box is often made to resemble a house and many are made out of recycled materials. Little Free Libraries (LFL) can be found almost anywhere from front lawns to forest preserves. The one thing that all of the boxes have in common is that they are full of free books. Visitors to LFLs are encouraged to take a book and leave a book. The Little Free Library movement started in Wisconsin in 2009 and is a growing phenomenon. The goals of the program are to build community while promoting literacy and the love of reading through the creation and building free book exchanges. To locate LFLs in your area and for more information, including how to build your own LFL, visit LittleFreeLibrary.org.

Home Matters
Create A Welcoming Front Porch ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI; THE HELEN OLIVERI TEAM OF KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY PARTNERS
I
t's said time and time again, there is no underestimating curb appeal. But it’s not just for when you’re selling. The exterior is an extension of your home, and therefore, an extension of your decor. Adding a few special features goes a long way towards creating an inviting and welcoming home. It can show your personality and set the tone before anyone even steps foot in your house. You can even transform your porch in a single weekend! Paint Your Door – Be courteous to your neighbors with this one. No one wants to live next door to the person with a bright orange or fushia door. But a nice accent color will spruce up the place and add a pop of color. This is a perfect way to liven up a small porch. Lighten it Up – Adding some extra lights will allow you to create an inviting space you can enjoy into the night. Festive lights can also be added for more flair. Don’t forget the areas you eat and your garden. Just be sure to have plenty of citronella candles or tiki torches to keep the bugs away. Seating – If you have a small front porch you should skip this one, but a large porch is somewhere you may eat or have the neighbors over for drinks. The decor should match your interior in style. If you have a sleek modern interior with pops of color, don’t create a cozy country porch. Be sure to use weather safe furniture, even items on a covered porch will have exposure to elements. Custom Numbers – Ramp up the fun by incorporating your house number in a more interesting way than just a metal number nailed
18
SW Lake Lifestyle | October 2015
to the wall. You can stencil the numbers on a flower pot or stitch them into pillows on your furniture. The important thing is to get creative and fun and make it totally unique to you. Welcome Sign – Nothing says “Welcome to my home” like a welcome sign. Stencil it on a plaque of wood or get a fancy decal to put add right to the door. Scribble it on a chalk board and leave room for people to leave you messages. Get creative and have fun with it. Seasonal Decorations – It's a fun way to change up your decor frequently without spending a too much. Just make sure you’re not the person in the neighborhood with Christmas decorations up at Easter. You don’t need to go overboard, but adding one or two seasonal items to your porch will add a fresh and friendly vibe to the picturesque view. TOWER OF LONDON
London, England On the banks of the River Thames, this well known imposing stone tower built in the 11th century has long been viewed as one of the most haunted buildings in Britain. A former political prison and place of execution sights the ghosts of many famous prisoners, including Lady Jane Grey, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Anne Boleyn, wife of Henry VIII, who was beheaded by her husband in 1536. Her ghost is sometimes spotted with her head in hand, walking through the Tower’s chapel. She is buried underneath the floor there, along with the bones CONTINUED > of hundreds of other people.

Aokigahara Forest AOKIGAHARA FOREST
Base of Mount Fuji, Japan Want to visit what feels like the “Blair Witch Project?” This is the place. Called Japan’s Suicide Forest, hundreds have journeyed into this forest to kill themselves amidst its dense trees and vines, made increasingly eerie by the quietness of the wind-blocking density of the trees. Volunteers help police to do annual sweeps to find and clear away the bodies. Understandably, many people believe the forest is haunted by the souls of those who have died there. Others point to the haunting of souls who died of starvation during the famine in ancient Japan, and those ghosts still haunt the forest today. BACHELOR’S GROVE CEMETERY
Chicago Suburbs, Illinois The abandoned, fairly small cemetery near Midlothian contains just 82 plots, many of which are unoccupied. The cemetery’s first official burials began in 1840. Over a hundred years later — in the 1950s through the 1970s — reports of hauntings in the cemetery reached an all-time high. Witnesses have reported seeing a phantom farmhouse, a two-headed ghost, figures dressed in monk robes, a black dog, and a woman in white — the latter of whom may have been captured in a famous photograph, taken by Judy Huff Felz in 1991. Look that one up on the Bachelor Grove website!
Eastern State Penitentiary
EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania This was the first prison to institute solitary confinement, which is said to have caused mental illness among the prisoners. When an inmate left his cell, a guard covered his head with a hood so that he remained in confinement. Solitary system was discarded eventually, during which time it housed both Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. The prison was abandoned in 1971 and rumors of strange happenings have plagued the stone penitentiary ever since. Now a museum and Halloween Haunted House (you can overnight), its visitors report footsteps in the yards, sounds of someone pacing in the cells, eerie noises, and lonely wails in the cold, dark corridors. Cell Block 12 is famous for its disembodied laughter and one guard tower appears to be occupied by a shadowy figure. THE STANLEY HOTEL
Estes Park, Colorado This hotel was built in 1909 and made famous by Stephen King’s “The Shining.” The idea came to King during his stay in room 217, but it is room 418 that is believed to be visited by the ghost of Lord Dunraven. The ballroom has also had many strange and unexplainable experiences such as piano music while empty and children playing in the corridors late at night. In 2013 the hotel’s ghosts were further provoked when they decided to dig up a pet cemetery next door! CONTINUED > 22

Just south of Mexico City, Mexico Voted “Biggest Scare Factor” by our staff, this island, hidden among the Xochimilco Canals, is dedicated to a girl who, according to legend, drowned under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s. Her body was discovered by Julian Santana Barrera who was told by her spirit to gather dolls for her to play with, which he did, and he hung hundreds of them from the trees on his island in an attempt to ward off evil spirits. Mr. Barrera died in 2001, but the dolls remain, and the creepy island can be visited by boat. Do you have some favorite “Haunts” that did not make our list this year? Assisted Living Explained A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR LOVED ONES ARTICLE LINDA SMITH
A
ssisted living is just that, it provides “assistance” to residents within a community. Assisted living can offer many services from shower assistance to medication reminders in the comfort of an individual’s apartment home. There is also a nurse available to set up medications or check on assisted living residents when they do not feel well. Assisted living normally offers three hot meals a day, with many communities offering a menu of selections at each sitting with restaurant-style service in a dining room. There are plenty of social opportunities available to assisted living residents. Calendars are filled with outings, parties, book clubs, crafts, games, socials and so much more. Through these many social opportunities, the residents develop a healthy and supportive community of relationships with their neighbors. It is beautiful to see residents engaging with each other and truly looking out for one another. Assisted living resident can come and go as they please and have their families visit privately in their own apartment. Many families also feel peace-of-mind knowing their loved one is cared for on a daily basis. Families often comment that they see such an improvement after their loved ones move into assisted living. That is generally attributed to three healthy meals a day, daily oversight, and social interaction. Often times, assisted living residents had previously 26

lived alone for some time. Cooking meals for one can be a burden and eating alone is lonely. Moving to an assisted living community takes that burden away. The social opportunities replace the loneliness. Residents choose to attend as many or as few programs as they like. Some residents do not prefer structured programming but are more comfortable sitting in one of the many common spaces having a conversation with a friend or group of friends. For whatever social style is preferred, there is certainly something for everyone. The clinical support of having a nurse on-site is so beneficial when a resident is not feeling well or has to juggle multiple doctors’ appointments. The nurse can also assist with obtaining orders for lab work or orders for physical therapy. The assisted living community often offers physical therapy or a fitness program to maintain, or help regain, strength and balance. The overall wellness (physical, mental, social, and spiritual) of assisted living residents is the number one priority of assisted living communities and the professionals who enjoy serving within them. No More Late Fees ... ANOTHER REASON TO LOVE YOUR LIBRARY! ARTICLE VALERIE STERN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
hat's right! We will no longer charge Ela cardholders late fees. All late fees have been waived for our materials. Please note, if you lose materials or return items with damage, you'll still need to pay the replacement cost.
WHY ARE WE ELIMINATING LATE FEES?
Creating financial barriers to using the Library is counterproductive. We want to encourage more use, not discourage it. We think there are better ways of encouraging people to return items on time than to threaten them with financial penalties. After all, you're already paying for library access through your property taxes. Why should you owe us more money? ISN'T THIS A GOOD SOURCE OF REVENUE FOR THE LIBRARY?
Overall, late fees contribute about 1 percent of our operating revenue. Late fees have long been used as a means of encouraging users to return materials. We are fortunate that this revenue isn't critical to our operation. We have a plan to encourage returns without adding a financial penalty. HOW WILL WE ENCOURAGE USERS TO RETURN MATERIALS?
When an item is overdue by 14 days, the patron's account will be suspended from borrowing additional materials until the overdue item is returned. No more new checkouts until the overdue item is returned. Instead of a $10 fine threshold being the block, it will be the 14 day overdue threshold. We think this is better than worrying about a late fee. Patrons will receive overdue notices at 7, 14 and 28 days overdue. When an item is more than 45 days overdue, we will turn over communication to a third party agency. We've been using this enforcement method for nearly 10 years, so it's pretty well established and has been very effective. 28
SW Lake Lifestyle | October 2015
LATE NOTICE SCHEDULE
• 7 days late -- Late Notice Emailed or Mailed • 14 days late -- No More New Checkouts Until Item is Returned • 28 days late -- Printed Warning Sent • 45 days late -- The Patron's Account is Sent to a Collection Agency WILL IT AFFECT THE AVAILABILITY OF ITEMS?
We continually monitor the availability of our materials. If the waiting list for an item is more than three weeks, we order additional copies. We will be extra diligent in monitoring availability as we implement this new policy. If we need additional copies of particular items, we will certainly acquire them. Our commitment is that you won't see a decrease in item availability. RENEWAL OPTIONS
There are several ways to manage your account so that materials do not become overdue and you can avoid collection: • Renew library materials in person. • Contact Checkout at 847.438.3433 x505. • Email at circ@eapl.org. • Renew online. Click on "My Account" to renew items 24/7. • Renew through the Library's app. The Ela Library app is available as a free download for mobile users. • S ign up for email notification at Checkout. You will receive email notices for holds ready for pick up, and courtesy reminders for items on your account that will be due.

Five Most Commonly Asked Commercial Real Estate Questions MEET RON ROBERTI OF LANDMARK PARTNERS 1. WHY SHOULD I WORK WITH A “COMMERCIAL” REAL ESTATE
4. WHAT IS A 1031 EXCHANGE?
AGENT? I HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS A RESIDENTIAL AGENT WHO
The 1031 exchange program is part of the federal tax code for real estate investors. This program sometimes referred to as the Starker Rule allows you to sell a commercial property then purchase another commercial property of equal or greater value and defer the capital gains tax. There are very precise rules for this program so feel free to contact me to discuss this great program in more detail.
HELPED ME SELL MY HOME. SHE’D BE HAPPY TO ASSIST ME.
First let me say that I enjoy working with many residential agents who refer their commercial clients to me. Residential and Commercial real estate requires two very different skillsets and resources. A seasoned commercial agent will have access to different databases such as LoopNet, CoStar, Showcase, Land & Farm, etc. which lists the majority of commercial properties. The typical MLS, which most residential Realtors subscribe to, only has a small fraction of the commercial properties on the market. Secondly making an offer, negotiating and bringing a commercial transaction to close requires an understanding of specific matters such as; lease types, Letters of Intent, zoning, highest and best use, the various property types and the terminology used in a commercial real estate contract. 2. WHAT IS A LETTER OF INTENT?
A Letter of Intent (LOI) is a short document that outlines the basic parameters of a lease or the purchase of commercial real estate. Once the LOI is agreed upon and signed by both parties, a commercial real estate attorney will then draft the final lease or purchase contract.
5. WHEN INTERVIEWING COMMERCIAL AGENTS, WHAT ARE A FEW QUALITIES I SHOULD LOOK FOR?
One of the main things I do before agreeing to take on a new assignment is to meet face to face with any new potential clients. This allows me to listen to their needs, understand their specific requirements, time frames, budget, geographic areas, etc. If an agent takes your information over the phone and simply starts emailing you property listings, how engaged is he or she in fulfilling your commercial real estate needs? If you are uncomfortable with the agent after your initial contact then keep looking. Very importantly, ask the agent about their level of experience and a list of all the databases, resources and listing services that will be used to assist you in your commercial real estate needs.
3. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMMERCIAL LEASES?
There are three customary lease types; NNN, Modified Gross and Full Service. • NNN - A commercial lease also known as Triple-Net. This means that in addition to base rent (which is usually quoted as per square foot per year), the tenant will also pay their prorata share of the property's real estate taxes, insurance, and common area maintenance expenses • Modified Gross - A type of a commercial real estate lease where the tenant pays rent that already includes the building’s operating and tax expenses for the initial base year at the lease's inception. However, in subsequent years pays, the tenant would also pay their proportionate share of any “increase” in costs associated with the property, such as property taxes, utilities, insurance and maintenance. • Full Service - A full service lease most commonly means a lease in which the rent includes all building operating expenses, property taxes and often times certain services & utilities. Typically the tenant will responsible for their own phone, internet and cable services. Keep in mind that there are many variations within the three lease types. Ask your experienced local commercial agent for more details. 30

Parting Thoughts
Mulling Over the Wine
Reviews WORDS DENISE SNODELL
I
was a weary shopper looking for a simple Riesling when my innocent eyes fell upon this: “Opens with a gorgeous bouquet of yellow flowers, stone fruit and musk against a backdrop of chalk and minerals. It’s richly fruity, with a sharp, honed acidity that’s shocking and penetrating. Finishes long, with an elegant honeyed touch.” Wuuut? I wasn’t sure if I was in a liquor store or in some seedy place reading Fifty Shades of Grapes. As E.L. James would say, “Holy cow!” I looked left. I looked right. I unlocked my cell phone and photographed the posted review card. The description of this pricey 94-pointer just floored me. I had to have it. The words, not the bottle. It’s an old story. Those of us who are, shall we say, less experienced wine lovers are intrigued and bemused by the industry’s word sommeliers. They can be a bit too passionate, or even bizarre, when explaining the flavor subtleties trapped beneath the cork. Call me a rube, but I don’t think my taste buds could ever fathom a backdrop of chalk. Yet the words quoted above had been fermenting in my cell phone picture gallery for a full season, and I had this crushing column deadline. The time arrived to fully investigate this exotic verbiage at a bigger wine store. Lo and behold, my research day coincided with a storewide wine tasting. Everywhere I turned, there was a rep tempting customers with sips of their forbidden fruits. They were stationed at the aisle endcaps, pouring samples of “honed acidity” and “deeply pitched notes of blistered tomato and pomegranate.” It was like a high octane Saturday at Costco. The place was crowded, but I managed to sneak some shots of the review cards. I honestly had no idea a bottle of pinot could tease

your palate with supple tannins that build slowly to frame a sappy floral pastille, but apparently it can. I hadn’t quite snapped enough reviews when a champagne expert waved me over to her table. As I slammed down a few sips of Taittinger, I explained why I was there, “I am baffled at how specific and bizarre some of these booze reviews can be. For instance, how can you taste underbrush? Underbrush! Do these aficionados crawl through the woods and chomp on low lying twigs?” She shrugged and told me descriptions including “forest floor brambles” are, indeed, a thing. But, as she poured me something dryer, she said linking squirrel environments to Syrah was the least of the crazy. “I’ve actually seen reviewers use the words ‘manure’ and ‘cat pee.’” I was stunned. “Really? Surely they finessed the descriptions with something like ‘hints of fertile meadow and subtle feline mist.’” Though concerned, I managed a quick sip of the dry stuff. But as she poured me yet another sample, she insisted, “No. The exact words were manure and cat pee.” Wow, I thought. Animal droppings. The dark forest’s underbelly. It was dizzying to imagine the wine scribes getting so noir. But a funny thing happened. We continued discussing all the weirdness right there under the fluorescent retail lights. I was on my fifth (or sixth or seventh) sample and—boom—I tasted it. My senses took me back to a private champagne cave tour I was fortunate to experience years ago in Reims, France. That one sip blossomed into a sweet, yet musty-dry medieval tapestry of tarnished armor, lightly sun-kissed by a lavender reduction… In other words, I think the secret to writing this stuff requires a full immersion.
