M
y favorite season is upon us. I know it’s hard to see summer end but I’m always so very excited for autumn that I tend not to look back— except, of course, when heading back to school! The anticipation of football games, crisp cool air and the beauty of the changing trees around us keep me focused forward into September.
This is the time of year that we get back to the daily routine of school days, exciting extracurricular activities, early sunsets and even earlier bedtimes. It can be daunting at first but thankfully we settle in to one of the best months here in SW Lake County. Final festivals to enjoy, late summer barbecues with friends, apple picking excursions and those last weekends on the lake help keep us occupied as we enjoy these dog days of summer. Your September issue of SW Lake Lifestyle highlights many opportunities to glean those precious moments outdoors this month. Helpful tailgating tips, our first Star Student feature and an area calendar of fun await you.

COUTURE 360 SALON ADOPTS SHELTER FOR ONE WEEK Rose DePaola, owner of Couture 360 Salon in Lake Zurich, opened her business with a strong sense of giving back to the community where she lives and works. She and her staff listen to the things that are important to their clientele. When one of her regular clients mentioned the Lake County Haven “Adopt A Night” program, she and her staff quickly began a fundraising effort to support a full week in December. With the generosity of clients and staff, the salon raised $1500 in two weeks. “One of the most rewarding things in life is giving,” DePaola says. “Working with a great staff and serving clients who participate in fundraisers is one of the highlights of being a business owner.” “Adopting a Night at the Haven’s shelter has a huge impact on the lives of homeless
women and children. They are forever grateful for the sustenance and services they receive,” says Kate Ceithaml, outreach coordinator for Lake County Haven. The Lake County Haven empowers homeless women and their children to achieve permanent, independent living. Couture 360 Salon is a full-service salon featuring hair, nails and body services. Opened in 2010, Couture 360 has raised more than $20,000 in funds and services for local nonprofits.

Great Travel Ideas for Wine Lovers
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
f you’re searching for inspiration for a trip that encompasses sightseeing, local cuisine and outdoor experiences, start with one of your passions: wine. Consider these travel ideas from the expert winemakers of The Seeker, a global brand with wines from the most popular grape-producing regions worldwide.
ARGENTINA
FRANCE
Mendoza, a province renowned for its Malbec, is an upand-coming destination for wine loving travelers, and has also long-attracted a mixed crowd of outdoor enthusiasts. Whether mountaineering, horseback riding or rafting is your pleasure, the Mendoza province of Argentina makes a beautiful backdrop. After a day of discovering majestic scenery, travelers can fill evenings with good company, an authentic meal and a smooth, spicy Malbec. Over the years Mendoza has been influenced by Spanish and Italian cultures, creating an infusion of colorful and flavorful local fare. Many meals begin with fresh warm bread and a sample of olive oil, another specialty of the region. Main courses are consistent with the region’s Creole culture, featuring various cured and grilled meat dishes, such as the “patitas aliñadas,” baked veal served with chimichurri sauce that pairs well with a glass of The Seeker Malbec, a bottle of which will typically cost about $14 in the U.S.
If you’re looking for a trip that is a bit more technical, the volcanoes at the Auvergne Regional Park, located in Auvergne Rhône Valley of France, will be sure to please. Take a guided hiking tour to the peak of a volcano to learn about the region. You may find yourself becoming a wine connoisseur while learning about the rich volcanic soils and its power to grow prosperous crops. The region produces five quality grape varietals in the terroir. The Pinot Noir varietal, in production since the 11th century, is the oldest. Today, wineries such as The Seeker make the most of the region’s warm days and cool nights, along with its mineral-rich soil to grow delicate, finessed grapes for its Pinot Noir wines. Travelers can enjoy breathtaking natural wonders by day and bask in their experiences by night with wine and local cheese, or a traditional potée auvergnate, a rich specialty combining tangy cabbage with the finesse of French pork meat.

NEW ZEALAND
If you’ve always longed to visit New Zealand, now is the time. Plan to see the Marlborough region for an outdoor adventure and refreshing, fruity, acidic Sauvignon Blanc, the region’s specialty. In the 1970s, Marlborough began the modern wine movement; over the years Sauvignon Blanc wines have become its front running grape varietal. Satiate your appetite with a glass of the Seeker’s Sauvignon Blanc (priced typically at about $14 a bottle) and other local cuisine such as the local fresh, green-lipped mussels, a delicacy well-known for its health benefits. Marlborough has much to offer travelers who love the outdoors. There are gorgeous nature trails through varied landscapes for hiking and photographing. Another option would be to mountain bike down the 70 kilometer scenic Queen Charlotte Track. Plan your next international wine journey with one great formula: seek out top reliable, quality wines, delightful regional meals and breathtaking outdoor adventures. (StatePoint)

Keeping Pets Safe and Comfortable Through a Move ARTICLE HELEN OLIVERI
O
ur furry family members can have a rough time adjusting to a big change like a move. There are many reports of pets changing behavior and having problems after a move. That's why it’s important to take some extra caution and effort to make sure it goes as smooth as possible. Here are some tips to help you out, but remember all pets are unique and full of their own personalities so be sure to keep an eye on yours and adjust accordingly.
16
SW Lake Lifestyle | September 2015
MOVE YOUR PETS LAST IF POSSIBLE.
Even after you remove all the boxes and furniture from your old place, it’s still comfortable and smells like home to your pet. Having the smell and familiarity of “their” stuff (even if it’s “your” stuff) will help ease their anxiety. The chaos of placing furniture and arranging items can add to a pet’s stress. MAKE EXTRA TIME FOR YOUR PET.
The first few weeks it’s important to spend some extra quality time calming or playing with your pet. They will adjust faster knowing that only the house has changed, and not you or your relationship. Be sure to explore your new home with your pet, allowing him/her to smell everything. Keep your pet's schedule and normal routines as this will help give them a sense of normalcy. BEWARE OF NEW DANGERS.
Cats are territorial, so strays in the yard could lead to stress and problems. Dogs have similar concerns, and will probably bark more than usual. Likewise, the plants and other items in your house or yard may pose a danger. Be sure to keep a close eye on your pet’s exploration to avoid any sudden issues. CHECK THE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR DANGERS.
Every neighborhood has that stray dog or one who gets loose. This could cause trouble for your pet depending on their behavior. Check around with your neighbors to see if there’s anything you should look out for to make sure your furry family member stays safe. MEET THE NEIGHBORS.
This means your pets, too. If your neighbors know your pets, you have another set of eyes helping to keep them safe and they will be more likely to be returned if lost. It's also a good idea to become familiar with local shelters in case your lost pet ends up there. Helen Oliveri is a 12-year real estate professional who loves our community and helping clients achieve their real estate goals is her priority. She is the managing broker of the newly opened Keller Williams Realty Partners, home of The Helen Oliveri Team in Hawthorn Woods, where she also resides. Saint Viator Senior Recieves
GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD S
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ELIZABETH SCHUETZ
aint Viator senior Erin McDermott fondly remembers celebrating her birthday each year with her grandmother, who would come in from out of town and together they would plant a “birthday garden.” “This annual tradition gave me a love of gardening,” Erin says. “I knew I wanted to plant some type of garden for my project.” Her project—planting a butterfly garden—is the capstone element of her Girl Scout Gold Award, which represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, and one that only five percent of active Girl Scouts achieve. “When I started to research types of gardens that would benefit the environment, I learned about the diminishing number of monarch butterflies,” Erin adds. “I knew I had my project.” According to Girl Scout guidelines, a Gold Award project must demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable “Take Action” projects. Saint Viator administrators point to Erin’s project as another example of what it means to be a Lion, as one who is inspired to serve the wider community and committed to a lifelong journey of learning and discovery. Erin turned to a section of the Reed Turner Woodland and Nature Center in Long Grove for her project. The 40-acre preserve features a grove of mostly oak and hickory trees—for which the village of Long Grove was named—and borders Indian Creek. It is a popular spot for nature walks, with its abundant wildflowers, wooded paths and more than 100 types of birds spotted in the preserve. However, the prairie area is always in need of restoration and in talking with its staff and Long Grove Park District officials, the preserve seemed like a good spot for a butterfly garden. Together with the staff and volunteers, Erin and her crew worked to clear the area of non-native and invasive species to make room for donated plants. The area was recently certified as a Monarch Way station and will provide host plants and nectar for monarchs for years to come. Erin McDermotts butterfly garden and seating area were recognized during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Reed Turner Woodland and Nature Center in Long Grove this August. 18

6 tips for getting your vehicle prepared for the party. ARTICLE PROVIDED
(BPT) - If "road trip" are the two best words for summer, then "tailgating" is the call for fall. As American as frozen TV dinners, tailgating is essentially a reason for over exuberant college and pro football fans to use their vehicles to party-hearty in the great outdoors, i.e., a giant stadium parking lot. 20
SW Lake Lifestyle | September 2015
Not surprisingly, tailgating has evolved over the years. Whether it's a baseball game, NASCAR race or even a non-sporting event, someone is next to their car, truck or SUV, performing the essential tailgate rituals: grillin', chillin' and watchin' TV.
Market Association (SEMA), the automotive trade organization for the aftermarket. "Tailgating really highlights what specialty aftermarket manufacturers are all about: innovative products to personalize and enhance vehicles to fit one's interests." Here are some tailgating product ideas: 1. MAKE YOUR BED.
If you're using a truck, the bed area is going to be essential. There are several products to keep the bed protected and stylish, such as colorful spray-on bed liners or complete bolt-on bed liners. Rubber bed floors and tailgate mats are also available to keep your bed nice and tidy. 2. TAILGATE TALES.
There are plenty of items available to protect and enhance your tailgate. Ladders, ramps and stairs can provide easy accessibility while tailgate caps can offer additional protection. Different sizes and styles of cargo boxes are available to carry around gear, and even act as a cooler. Top it off by converting your full-sized truck tailgate into a comfy couch with a thick-foamed cushion that's made for the exact specifications of your tailgate. 3. TEAM PLAYER.
Sports fans like to show their allegiances and many tailgating products are offered with team logos and colors. Several companies offer vinyl team graphics that adhere to the sides of your vehicle, while others offer tailgate nets with the American flag so you can honor the red, white and blue. Wheel covers, floor mats, and dash covers are all available with team logos as well. Personalized car flags are a must so fellow tailgaters can find your party easier. 4. THERE'S A HITCH.
Lots of products are available to attach to your tow hitch, including one that features two fold-out tailgating tables. Dual-hitch receivers double your towing capacity so you can bring more tailgating accessories and keep them safe with a hitch pin and lock. 5. GAME ON.
Many tailgaters watch games from their vehicles and can easily do so with a portable TV mount. Keep your screen tightly secured by attaching it to your trailer hitch, enabling you to safely set up your flat screen TV with your truck tailgate open. Consider updating your car audio system to help deliver the best sound possible. 6. THE GREAT OUTDOORS.
With the immense popularity of tailgating today, those hosting the social-gathering are aiming to have the coolest and most innovative party-friendly products and accessories for their car, truck or SUV. "Tailgating is a creative way to launch a party from a vehicle," says Chris Kersting, president and CEO for the Specialty Equipment
Sometimes the outdoors aren't too great, so there are pop-up auto umbrellas, shelters and awnings that will fend off rain or too much sunshine. There are a number of affordable tailgating products available for your vehicle. Most of these products can be found at camping and sporting goods stores, as well as auto parts stores, national mass retailers and online. September 2015 | SW Lake Lifestyle

AUTUMNS PERFECT PAIRING ARTICLE ERICA SAMIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
S
eptember brings one of the best times of the year to Long Grove with the scent of autumn in the air. Leaves start changing color from green to beautiful bouquets of red, yellow and orange. As you raise your glass with family and friends to enjoy a homemade apple pie, consider complementing your celebration with a special wine like Broken Earth’s Albariño. For Fall Apple Fest, Broken Earth Winery will be featuring their Estate Albariño. This relatively unknown grape varietal is a fresh, light, crisp dry white wine often likened to a Sauvignon Blanc; it also has similar aromas to that of a Viognier, Gewürztraminer or Riesling. Translated as “the white wine from the Rhine,” it is best known from Rias Biaxas in Northwest Spain, where the climate is rather cool with heavy amounts of rainfall throughout the year. Take this unique grape, grow it at Broken Earth Winery's warmer, drier estate in Paso Robles, California, and you have their “California” approach: slightly fuller bodied, flavorful wine with powerful fruit notes of peaches, apricots and apples while still retaining a refreshing acidity. As that feeling of fall enters the air, what better way to enhance it than with a bottle of Albariño plus fruit or fish? Join the fun at Apple Fest where the Albariño will be chilled and ready for you!

Shepherd’s Flock of Lutheran Home EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT IN INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMMING ARTICLE LINDA SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
C
hildren go through crucial developmental stages during their early years. Attending a high quality early childhood education program can have long-lasting, beneficial effects on overall development. Enrolling your child in a program that will provide a loving and caring environment is extremely important along with building a partnership to ensure your child’s continued healthy development during his or her early childhood education years. Shepherd’s Flock is a unique Christian and Intergenerational childcare center nestled in the Lutheran Home that supports families with quality early childhood developmental programs. The Lutheran’s Home’s mission is to empower vibrant, grace-filled living across all generations. Our faithful dedication to that shared mission includes the students and programs of Shepherd’s Flock. Nurturing the spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual and physical development is how we contribute to a vibrant intergenerational community that supports critical development in the early years. When your child attends the same preschool or child care program during his or her early years, it allows them to build and develop long-lasting relationships with the adults and children in that environment which provides a sense of security and belonging. Children who are comfortable in their surroundings and with those around them are more likely to participate in activities, demonstrate a greater cognitive capacity and learn how to work cooperatively. Interacting with older adults enhances 26

social skills for children by enabling them to develop secure relationships, communication skills by sharing stories that lead to vocabulary building, learn how to problem solve, see aging as a normal process of life, and provides a sense of purpose. This type of atmosphere provides positive role models for the children to interact with regularly and brings together a diverse population to help dispel negative or inaccurate stereotypes. Children enjoy opportunities to interact with the seniors both in the classroom and throughout the campus during daily walks, playing outside, or participating in shared activities. Intergenerational activities offer mutual benefits by helping and being helped, teaching and being taught, loving and being loved. Intergenerational programs promote the transmission of cultural traditions and values from older to younger generations, helping to build a sense of personal and societal identity while encouraging tolerance. Early childhood development is dependent on all these elements in order to ensure optimal learning. The goal is to lay a solid foundation in all areas of development to ensure future success in each milestone and developmental stage of life. When all these elements come together it plays an important role in each child attaining crucial developmental skills and reaching their fullest potential. Lutheran Home is a Lutheran Life Community empowering vibrant, gracefilled living across all generations

STATION ELEVEN AUTHOR EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL | REVIEWER LEAH L. WHITE
S
tation Eleven is a literary look at the end of the world as we know it. A massive flu outbreak causes a societal collapse and we follow a unique cast of characters in two time periods, as the outbreak is happening and also in the future, once humanity has gained a foothold but hasn’t rebuilt the technological society that once was. Most of the book takes place in the near future, about 15 years later, following a small troupe of Shakespearean actors who travel from settlement to settlement, performing and entertaining in a world that can no longer communicate with each other. This wandering group of troubadours help spread happiness and news but when they come across what appears to be a town taken over by a cult, they begin to lose members of their cast. And they do not know where they are going and who or what is taking them. When the novel looks back to our current times, the author doesn’t criticize our way of life but rather writes what feels like a love letter to this time, right now, and emphasizes how people mourn the loss of contemporary living. Station Eleven was a finalist for for the National Book Award, and won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, among numerous other accolades. This post-apocalyptic novel is an excellent selection for a book discussion and a good read for fans of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. You can find multiple copies in the new Book Club collection at the Ela Area Public Library.
Leah L. White is the head of popular materials at the Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich. Visit EAPL.org for more book recommendations. 28

It will come with a 6.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor capable of pushing the vehicle for up to an estimated 18.6 miles on electricity alone. The rest of the power comes from 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 208 hp and 258 lbft of torque. All told, the hybrid system is capable of generating an 30

impressive 275 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-Benz says that it will have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. No EPA estimates have been released as of yet, but we expect them to be pretty impressive. Parting Thoughts
IN THE SHADOWS OF FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS WORDS DENISE SNODELL
H
ow could a woman who still has no idea what a “first down” is find herself so captivated at Friday night football games? It’s easy. In the past few years, my sports cluelessness has allowed me to keenly observe the hundreds and hundreds of folks off the field. There is juicy stuff there. I have tailgated. I have chatted with moms confessing similar ESPN aversions. I have eavesdropped without mercy. It seems to me a high school football game is a microcosm of life. I think every person who attends this all-American event arrives with a little bucket of hope. Only, every hope is different. If you start with the basics, the kids on each team and the entire crowd hope for a win. But then it gets more complicated. And I suspect the hope of which I speak has many tentacles because, as I’ve already hinted, I’m wide-eyed and nosey. Now in year three of attending high school games, I have meticulously catalogued the vibe, from serious to silly. If I were to guess what others quietly hope for on these magical Friday nights, based purely on this anecdotal, mustard-stained research, here’s how it would go: BAND MOM: “I hope the crowd realizes this punchy music, this amazing performance of coordination, is not coming out of thin air. These kids practice their tails off, too.” FUTURE VALEDICTORIAN: “Must maintain the GPA. Must maintain the GPA.” HAIR-FLIPPING SOPHOMORE GAL: “There he is about 12 bleachers up. I hope he notices me.”
38
SW Lake Lifestyle | September 2015
THE GUY 12 BLEACHERS UP: “Come on, defense!” SOCCER DAD: “Why don’t my daughter’s games attract crowds like
this? I hope it doesn’t bother her. First down! Yes!” MOTHER WHO STAYED BECAUSE FRESHMAN NEEDS A RIDE HOME: “Ugh, front row the day before my hair appointment! I hope the folks behind me don’t notice the gray roots. It’s chilly here. I wonder if my baby needs his jacket.” FRESHMAN WHO NEEDS A RIDE FROM HIS MOTHER: “If Mom brings my jacket to the student section again, I will die.” BENCHWARMER: “I hope they need me tonight.” TEAM DOCTOR: “I hope they don’t need me tonight.” FORTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD UNCLE OF STARTING QUARTERBACK: “I hope they have college scouts here.” NINE-YEAR-OLD COUSIN OF STARTING QUARTERBACK: “I hope they have Skittles here.” EVERY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR ON THE FIELD AND AT THE STADIUM: “Last home/away game for me. I hope…” I have no idea what today’s 18 year old hopes for. My only wish is that every one of them at the game, or not at the game, knows he or she is first-string. Whatever a teen clutches most — books, helmets, trumpets, beakers, words, baseballs, dance shoes, calculators, paintbrushes — it’s up to us grown-ups to shine lights brighter than the Friday night kind on every single kid. And, at all costs, it’s up to us to never, ever hand-deliver a jacket to the student section.
