T

his month we celebrate all things green as color returns to the world around us. Of course, these days the word ‘green’ immediately conjures responsibilities such as recycling, energy conservation and reducing waste – their importance now ingrained in our every day lives.

APRIL 2015 publisher Peter Fetzer | PFetzer@LifestylePubs.com

editor Wendy Willison | WWillison@LifestylePubs.com

Enjoying the green around us is equally important. It serves as a good reminder of what it is we’re working so hard to preserve – and enjoying these simple things is just good for the soul. With the arrival of spring, and the celebration of Easter, this time certainly represents renewed life. Please be sure to plan some time outdoors with friends, family or simply on your own. Recognize your new beginnings as our area starts to bloom right along with the flowers and see the first wave of migrant songbirds come through. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue. If you have a story or idea to share, please let us know, as we love how much color you bring to our world here at SW Lake Lifestyle.

Around Town EARTH DAY Each year on April 22, we celebrate National Earth Day. This annual day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. John McConnell pioneered the name and concept of Earth Day in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. His thought for Earth Day was to have it be the first day of spring, March 21, 1970, and that day was sanctioned in a proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. One month later, a separate Earth Day focused on the United States was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. This day was created to be an environmental teach-in to be held on April 22, 1970. The original national coordinator in 1970, Denis Hayes, launched an organization and took it international in 1990, organizing events in 141 nations. In 2009, the April 22 date was designated as International Mother Earth Day by a consensus resolution adopted by the United Nations. The Earth Day Network now globally coordinates Earth Day and it is annually celebrated in more than 192 countries.

PLEDGE TO PLANT It’s an old Native American tradition that when you take something from the earth, you must put something back. Earth Day 2015 will be a global “give back to earth” event, as an “offering” for all the planet gives us. Please plant something that is organic, perennial and suitable to the growing conditions in your area. If the temperature is not conducive to planting on April 22nd, please start growing a plant indoors or commit to planting your tree once the outdoor temperature is warm enough. It is important to keep a certain portion of the planet covered with forests as it is essential for regulating the distribution of rain and snow over the surface, thus, controlling the climate. Every tree planted will assist in stabilizing the climate. The goal is to plant one billion seeds/trees. Be a part of the biggest grass-roots effort in history by planting a seed/tree as a “give back” to Earth. Take the Pledge to Plant at ForestNation.com and share your Earth Day experience with the world!

CITIZENS FOR CONSERVATION TO HOLD NATIVE PLANT, SHRUB AND TREE SALE Citizens for Conservation will hold its 19th annual Native Plant, Shrub and Tree Sale on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A huge selection of robust, hardy native plants will be available for purchase, and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to answer questions. Native plants provide many advantages for gardeners and the environment. They do not require fertilizers or pesticides saving gardeners both time and money. In addition, their deep, fibrous root systems firmly anchor soil to help conserve water and prevent erosion. Native plants do not require watering but instead provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Pre-ordering native forbs (flowering plants) and grasses are possible, and will also be available on the day of the sale. Trees and shrubs must be ordered in advance at CitizensForConservation.org. The 10

SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2015

deadline for advance orders is April 10 with the pick-up date of May 1. If you have questions or wish to have an order form mailed, call CFC at 847.382.SAVE. Again this year, CFC will be offering native milkweed at greatly reduced prices for the sake of the monarchs.

INTRODUCING

Claire Slattery REAL WIVES OF SW LAKE WHO LIVES IN YOUR HOUSE?

My husband Gregg, our two kids Jasmine (10) and Logan (8), two dogs Peanut (13) and Calvin (3), and twin hamsters Lily and Charlie (3 months). WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME?

I started my own business, Mindful Mix, a marketing/design firm, in 2009 and worked from home until August 2013. At that time, I took a space in our downtown Lake Zurich at the 45 S. Old Rand Road building. I love being part of the business community! NATIVE OR TRANSPLANTED TO THE AREA?

I am native to Kenosha, Wisconsin, but transplanted to Lake Zurich from Los Angeles, California, in 2005. WHAT’S THE STRANGEST THING IN YOUR PURSE RIGHT NOW?

Glitter is sprinkled all over my black wallet... That’s what you get when you have a 10-year-old daughter and a purse that holds a lot. GUILTIEST FOOD PLEASURE?

Adams Peanut Butter Cup cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory

Wauconda. It reminds us of the California coast that we miss and gives our kids a part of childhood that we had growing up. WHAT DO YOU RECORD ON THE DVR OR WATCH ON-DEMAND?

The Good Wife and Madam Secretary – powerful women – enough said.

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU?

FAVORITE COCKTAIL?

I didn’t know, so I decided to ask. She said, “Claire is not intimidated by obstacles and boundaries, she sets goals and through much hard work and determination she achieves. She has a gift of creativity in all aspects of her life.”

A great glass of Chardonnay

ORGANIZATION THAT GETS MOST OF YOUR VOLUNTEER TIME?

I love cooking new recipes for my family – I get my inspiration from Food Network magazine. The best part is that my kids will try, and usually like, everything. I wish I were that diverse as a child.

My time is split between four great organizations: The Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce–I am the vice president and oversee signature events and the marketing committee; The District 95 Educational Foundation–I sit on the board of directors and manage all communications; the May Whitney PTO–I work in the classroom for parties as well as run the After 3 program. I also help the May Whitney Cub Scouts Pack 964 with events; and The Chicago Chapter of the American Marketing Association–in July, I will return to the position of vice president, managing its branding and communications. BEST VACATION EVER?

My husband and I took two vacations to Maui and Kauai back in the late 90s. The islands are fabulous places to be–rich with culture, spirit and beauty. I can’t wait to return. FAVORITE DATE NIGHT?

WHERE DO YOU WISH YOUR HUSBAND WOULD BUY YOUR NEXT GIFT?

House of Betty Jane, a new women’s boutique in Lake Zurich WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE INDOOR/OUTDOOR ACTIVITY?

WHICH CELEBRITY DO YOU GET MISTAKEN FOR?

I have been told that I could be Helen Hunt, although with brown hair. When I was little, I was asked for autographs by people who believed I was Archie Bunker’s niece, Stephanie Mills (actress Danielle Brisebois). She ironically starred alongside Helen Hunt in the 1997 movie As Good As It Gets. WHO IS THE PERSON YOU RESPECT THE MOST, AND WHY?

Both of my (late) parents were instrumental to the course of my life: not only were both entrepreneurs, like myself, but they also set the stage for the family traditions that my family embraces. As my kids get older, I seek to remember choices they made for me and my two sisters, as well as the trials and tribulations they met having three daughters.

There are so many great restaurants in the Lake Zurich Area. We love walking to the Mexican restaurant, El Jardin, anytime of the year since we live nearby. We also love the outdoor patio at Beelow’s because it reminds us of our love of balmy nights in California.

An Adventuresome Holiday Awaits You ARTICLE JILL RODRIGUEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C

osta Rica holds a special place in my heart as my husband and I first traveled there 10 years ago on our honeymoon. Many areas of Costa Rica offer such varied experiences enabling us to create and personalize our very first adventure together. This amazing opportunity inspired me to become a specialist in this region, returning again and again. Over the years, I’ve found one of the most enjoyable aspects of my career is helping families and couples design their own personal adventures, as well.

THE COUNTRY

Known by many as the “Switzerland of Central America,” this small, safe and politically stable country has much to offer travelers. There is more biodiversity per square mile in Costa Rica than anyplace else on the planet. The country has numerous mountain ranges, more than100 volcanoes (six of which are active today), Pacific 16

SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2015

and Caribbean beaches, dozens of national parks, beautiful landscapes and a welcoming, warm people. Costa Rica is a haven for travelers who enjoy an active and adventuresome holiday. Most areas offer trekking, biking, white-water rafting, zip lines, hiking and kayaking along with other options to enjoy the amazing terrain. ARENAL

Nestled within the flat, fertile lowlands of San Carlos, the Arenal Volcano rises up from the rainforest like a natural monument. Arenal is Costa Rica’s most active volcano, with eruptions since 1968. One of many remarkable sights, this mountain of fire symbolizes the adventure and mysticism of the region. The Arenal Volcano Region is home to many award-winning hotels including Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort, Nayara Hotel Spa & Gardens, and The Springs Resort. Tabacon, a member of the Leading

Hotels of the World and the Leading Spas of the World is recognized by both Spa Finder’s Readers Choice Awards and Travel & Leisure, and is Costa Rica’s most renowned hot springs spa. Known as the adventure capital of Costa Rica, we enjoyed zip-lining through the jungles, relaxing in the thermal hot springs, hiking to waterfalls, and gazing at the Volcano. I recommend a minimum stay of three nights in Arenal, allowing enough time to enjoy all the adventurous activities the area offers. MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST

The rare phenomenon where climatic conditions cause cloud and mist to be in regular contact with the vegetation is called a cloud forest. Few exist in the world, and Monteverde is one of the few destinations where cloud forests are easily accessible. This magical environment enchants visitors from all over the world. Monteverde is

home to the Quetzal, one of the true prizes for avid birdwatchers. Being nature lovers, we visited this secluded part of the country in search of exciting trails in the cloud forest, adventurous canopy rides, and relaxing evenings in the cool, crisp climate. Cozy mountain lodges provide the perfect romantic setting. The town of Monteverde was founded by Quakers, and aside from tourism and hotels, the main economic activity centers around agriculture and dairy production. The region is home to the Monteverde Cheese factory and the organic Monteverde coffee tour. Most of the restaurants and resorts are owned and managed by local families and offer down-to-earth Quaker hospitality. It was such a unique experience, sitting outside on our balcony at Hotel El Establo, watching the clouds roll up the hills to meet us. This is where we saw some of the most beautiful sunsets of our trip. GUANACASTE

Visitors from the world over come to the Guanacaste province for its warm climate, sandy beaches, national parks, nightlife, and myriad of activities that include surfing, hiking, zip-lining and fishing. The array of boutique hotels, private villas, all-inclusive resorts and luxury hotels offer the perfect dream vacation. This region features many new properties and I highly recommend it for honeymooners, couples and families. Overlooking the sapphire blue waters of Culebra Bay, the spectacularly designed Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort personifies Costa Rica’s “Pura Vida” expression, an extension of the native spirit of the country meaning “Pure Life.” The barrier-free environment, inspired by the local flora and fauna, is well integrated to the lush setting. The resort features three unique restaurants influenced by the Latin American culture, a breathtaking spa with nine treatment rooms, and two secluded beaches. The new Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica is a vibrant beach resort in a beautiful setting. Amenities include the Dreams Spa by Pevonia, many watersports, an outdoor pool and a children’s program. For travelers that want to stay in one place, or for those just looking for a quick getaway, this is definitely the region I recommend. There are weekly nonstop flights from O’Hare to Liberia, which is easily accessible to the properties of this area. Jill Rodriguez has been a professional travel consultant for more than 15 years at Lake Zurich Travel & Cruise, and is a Costa Rica expert. April 2015 | SW Lake Lifestyle

DIY Relaxation: 10 Ways to De-Stress S

tress is often seen as a negative effect on the body, but it is very essential to life. It is the “fight or flight system that is naturally part of our survival system. Stress is bad when it overwhelmingly impacts our health equilibrium. It is associated with higher levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Accumulated unmanaged stress can lead to major physical and psychological illness, including depression, overeating, excessive sleep and irritability. While it is impossible to avoid stress completely, it is possible to manage your stress. Here are a few ways: 1. GET A MASSAGE

Massage has been shown to be effective in reducing mental and physical stress. In one study massage helped lessen stress and pain in patients who have chronic pain. Another study suggested that 15-minute massages helped reduce the psychological stress of their test subjects. Massage lowers the level of cortisol and increases the levels of serotonin and dopamine.

6. AROMATHERAPY

Certain plant oils have been found to relieve nervous tension or anxiety. The scents of certain plants, such as lavender, can ease our stress and relax us. These scents can create a mood for us and are often used with massages, meditations and hot baths. 7. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE

By turning off your phone, you shut the external stress out and it allows you to focus on yourself and your immediate surroundings. Escaping technology can be a very relaxing experience that everyone should try.

2. GO FOR A WALK

8. MEDITATE

Going for a walk can clear your mind and keep your body healthy. Walking helps increase your endorphins which can give you a euphoric feeling and it reduces the levels of cortisol. It will give you a boost of energy while reducing your fatigue. Additionally, simply being outside also helps reduce stress and helps increase memory and attention span.

Meditation has been used for thousands of years to help find your inner self and has sometimes been used for religious purposes. It is an inexpensive technique used to release your stress and allows you to clear your mind. Pairing it with breathing exercises can further lower your heart rate and blood pressure. 9. ENJOY A HOT BATH

Green tea lowers your blood pressure and is full of antioxidants that are beneficial for your health. Black tea can help lower cortisol and reduce stress.

A hot bath can help relieve the tension on your muscles, lessen the pain on your body, and it provides a comfortable environment that surrounds your body. It also promotes blood circulation and calms the nervous system.

4. TAKE DEEP BREATHS

10. YOGA

By taking deep, slow breaths, your blood pressure and heart rate also slow down, which counteracts the effects of stress. This also allows you to relax and clear your mind and is largely used in meditation and yoga.

Yoga is an excellent weight and stress management tool. It helps your balance, flexibility and strengthens your core. Studies have shown that yoga is promising in reducing anxiety and stress in people who practice yoga. Takeaway Point: Stress is needed for survival, but it is important to control your stress. If left unmanaged, it can build up and cause psychological and physical harm.

3. DRINK TEA

5. USE GUIDED VISUALIZATIONS

This is a technique that many people use to relax, control their stress, and help them achieve their goals. Guided visualization allows people to imagine and consciously think about certain issues and helps people get in touch with their intuition. 20

Driver's Notebook

TOYOTA PRIUS THE GRANDDADDY OF HYBRIDS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

W

henever I drive a hybrid such as the 2015 Toyota Prius I’m initially tempted to tiptoe on the throttle and creep away from stop signs in an effort to squeeze the most miles out of a gallon of gas. While it’s fun to see how little fuel I can use, driving slowly gets old and I soon resume normal driving. That resulted in an average of 41 miles per gallon during a week of cold weather. Even with gasoline at record lows, that’s still enticing. In 14 years, with sales of more than 1.5 million, the Toyota Prius hybrid has been so successful that it is almost a brand unto itself. Today, there are four models: Prius, Prius c, Prius v and a plug-in Prius. The uniquely shaped Prius connotes thrift, efficiency and innovation. It is available in five trim levels, with prices starting at $24,200 and topping out at $30,005 for the Prius Five. That is the model I drove from Toyota’s press fleet, and it was equipped with dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system that can apply the brakes in certain situations, lane-keeping assist, head-up display, navigation, safety connect, and a JBL audio system. Safety connect includes automatic crash notification and an emergency assistance call button. The Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder, Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine that has 98 horsepower. Combined with a 60kW electric motor, the total output is 134 horsepower. The car can run on the engine alone or battery alone, but it generally uses a combination of the two. There are four drive modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV. The car can be driven on electricity alone for a mile in EV

mode. Eco adjusts throttle input and climate control for maximum mileage. Power is as the name suggests. I used Normal. The use of an electric water pump and electric power steering help save fuel, and exhaust heat is used to warm the engine coolant during cold starts. Regenerative braking recaptures electrical energy during braking. The Prius Three and Four models can be equipped with a moonroof that has solar panels over the rear seat area. The solar panels power a ventilation system that lowers the car’s interior temperature when parked. Because of low-rolling-resistance tires, and perhaps the weight of the batteries, I note that the Prius ride feels firm and often seems to lack compliance, as if the tires are over inflated. It is not objectionable, but noticeable. The Prius is 14 inches shorter than a Camry but, its interior volume is just 3 cubic-feet less. Rear-seat headroom is actually greater than that of a Toyota Corolla, and the rear seat folds down to expand the cargo space. A high center console splits the front seats and contains a small, electronic gear selector. The speedometer is situated at the top center of the instrument panel. In a nod to reducing driver distraction, the steering wheel switches are equipped with touch sensors. When touched, they show a duplicate image of the control on the instrument panel in the driver’s line of sight. CONTINUED >

Parting Thoughts

Greetings from Zin City WORDS DENISE SNODELL

I

have a dirty little secret. I’m a non-gardener who has somehow slyly scraped the earth’s surface. Yes, it’s true I’m not ambitious about “planting things.” While other suburbanites take pride in nudging photosynthesis, I am clueless. Clueless. My hidden outdoorsy adventure has nothing to do with homegrown veggies and herbs, either. Nice concept, but I thrill at harvesting crops in the grocery produce section only. It’s all prepicked and shiny and waxed. Nice. Whatever it takes to avoid the effort involved with growing cornucopia fillers, I’m there. But flowers are a different story. I cultivate some myself. Crazy as it sounds, every summer, all summer long and into fall, my house is bursting with colorful, artful bouquets from my very own secret garden. It’s not exactly a garden. My planting area is a little patch of sloping not-grass on a narrow side yard, right up against the house. Picture this glamorous triangulation: a small area of lumpy dirt just below the dryer vent, smack dab between a small concrete door slab and a spidery window well. What I just described is the opposite of a British flower scenario. (English people set the bar for lovely flower gardens.) If I were, say, an outskirt Londoner, my so-called garden would instead be in full view, punctuated with a delicate iron trellis and an antique stone bench, just beyond a row of fragrant, exotic roses. But here I am in Middle America, with the frumpiest set-up the outdoors can offer. Did I mention the dryer vent? Fear not, when warm weather hits, I have some stuff even British royalty would die for. Good ol’ blaring American sun. A few cheap packets of zinnia seeds. A watering can. And southern exposure. Take that, Queen.

34

SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2015

The thing about zinnias is they’re perfect cutting flowers. And that’s why I’m a big fan. Probably many people who know what they’re doing plant zinnias as part of a sweeping, stay-put master-gardened grand plan. Their zins might serve as an untouchable color patch to transition the eye from, say, hydrangeas to box hedges. That sounds horrible, in retrospect, but it’s coming from me. What do I know? Nothing. So how did this whole zinnia thing happen? By accident. Years ago, I received a free seed sample in the mail. I think it was from a real estate agent. Can’t remember. The packet showed such a colorful mix and stated these suckers were great cutting flowers. When I noticed the instructions advised to plant the seeds just a quarter inch deep in the soil, I was totally on board. A fraction of an inch meant no worm encounters and no complications. Plus, I knew there was that un-mowable bare section at the side of the house, soaking up all that sunlight in vain. My cutting garden was born. It’s been bouquet city ever since. Inspired, but not a gardener? Trust me, zinnias are so forgiving. They can get thirsty, yes, but who wouldn’t with all that sun? I’m sure garden clubbers have strict “how to” rules, but I plant my little buddies on my own schedule—sometime in the spring, when I feel like it. I always drop the seeds too close together, oops. Some years I fertilize the soil, others I don’t. Regardless, the zinnias always show up, and they’re always beautiful. My only advice, other than “just add water,” is to make sure you buy seeds labeled “giant” or “super giant.” Ka-pow! It’s a good idea to have garden scissors, too. Upon the first wave of blooms, I run with mine.

Illinois Vein Specialists is Pleased to Introduce our Newest Doctor. Susan Kanehann MD. We are pleased to introduce Illinois Vein Specialist’s newest member Dr. Susan Kanehann. Like Dr. Rivard, Dr. Kanehann (Sue) started out working as an Emergency Room physician actually working for Dr. Rivard at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. He and two other physicians started the TriCounty Emergency Physicians group in 1984. At the time, emergency medicine was a brand new specialty. Sue became one of the first physicians under Dr. Rivard’s leadership in 1988 and continued to work for him until his retirement from the ER in 2006. Almost 25 years later, Dr. Rivard eventually set out to start another adventure, yet again becoming a pioneer - this time in the speciality of vein disease. In fact, Dr. Rivard was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to become board certified in venous and lymphatic medicine (varicose vein disease) in 2008. Dr. Kanehann would eventually rejoin Dr. Rivard to provide expert care as a varicose vein specialist.

As Sue remembers, “I knew from the 6th grade that I wanted to be a doctor - our Science teacher had us dissect frogs and I thought those squishy creatures were so organized and interesting, that people must be such much more interesting and organized. Then my father died of a heart attack. That galvanized my career choice, one that would be of continual learning and helping people ”get better.” I loved learning the facts, but more than that I loved “taking care” of people.” Dr. Kanehann graduated from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in 1980, two years after Dr. Rivard graduated from the same school. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine from Northwestern University in 1984 and went to work in the ER at Sherman Hospital in Elgin until joining the staff at Good Shepherd in 1988. She worked in Good Shepherd’s ER from then on until retiring last year. “I am so happy to have had that career; while it was very rewarding and I worked hard and met many wonderful people, it was time to move on. I was exhausted from all the chaos. Now, under the patient mentorship, and guidance of Dr. Steve Rivard, I’m becoming a vein doctor! Everyday I see things that I never appreciated before in the ER and I’m learning new things - it’s kind of thrilling!” Dr. Kanehann and her husband, also a physician, have lived in the Barrington area since 1985. They have 3 children, the youngest of whom is in medical school. She is an avid tennis player, a lover of dogs, and excited to be starting this new journey with Dr Rivard. Illinois Vein Specialists opened in 2009 and has a staff of a dozen, including a Board Certified Vein Specialist, medical assistants, RNs, ultrasound specialists, and has successfully treated over 6,000 patients.
