I once read something about the idea of wishing one another to “Have a Very New Year!” With so many good things to come in 2015, that sentiment makes perfect sense. This is your very own NEW YEAR. Take time to enjoy starting anew this January while finding new ways to continue doing what you love most.

Snow Shoveling Tips from the Village of Barrington! While snow shoveling can be good exercise, it can also be dangerous for optomitic shovelers who take on more than they should. The National Safety Council offers the following tips to help you get a handle on safe shoveling: • Those over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive, should be especially careful • If you have a history of heart trouble, do not shovel without a doctor’s permission. • Don’t shovel after eating or smoking • Take it slow! Pace yourself, and be sure to stretch out and warm up before tackling the driveway 12
SW Lake Lifestyle | January 2015
• Try to push the snow as you shovel, instead of lifting. • Don’t pick too much at once - use a small shovel, or fill a large shovel 1/4- to 1/2-full • Lift with your legs bent, and don’t lift with your back. Keep your back straight. •Don’t work to the point of exhaustion. If you’re short of breath, take a break. If you feel tightness in your chest, stop immediately. • Dress warmly - remember that extremities such as your nose, fingers, ears, hands and feet need extra attention during winter’s cold. Wear a turtleneck, cap, scarf, face protection, mittens, and wool socks and waterproof boots.

Mid-Winter Gardening Checklist Daydream of spring and enjoy the wait Article Woodrow D. Weasel
W
hile you may still see snow on the ground or feel the chill of winter in the air, you can be working on your garden from the comfort of your favorite chair by the fire. Picturing, planning and preparing make me feel productive even when I’m not actually in the garden. Here are some things I do indoors so I am prepared when the weather allows me to work outdoors. Picturing
Now is a great time to imagine what you’d like to do in your gardens and landscapes this year. Dream – All year long I peruse pictures of flowers and gardens that appeal to me online, in magazines and catalogues. Now I look seriously at the ideas I’ve collected in a notebook, and draw out on paper what I’d like to grow this year. I literally sketch out every garden as well as my lawn. If I’ve already drawn up plans, I now review them. Shop – I make lists of what I want to buy and then find the best places to purchase them. Sometimes this is from a catalogue, 14
SW Lake Lifestyle | January 2015
sometimes it’s trading out with a friend, and other resources include local nurseries or coop extension offices. My list also includes tools I want to add to my repertoire. GardenWeasel.com is a great resource for tools. Loosening the soil, turning it to give it some air and moisture will also be one of the first outdoor tasks, so you’ll want to make sure you have a long-handled, tined cultivator like Garden Weasel. One of the first things I do when the weather allows is prep my soil with compost. Cotton boll compost and worm castings are at the top of my shopping list. Shopping starts now so I can spread out my expenses over several months. Planning
Do the Math – I measure the dimensions of different areas of my garden and lawn so that I can easily and accurately calculate whatever I will need to purchase—seed, compost, fertilizer, etc. I take this with me when I go shopping, and have it handy, so that I can do the math based on the instructions on pack-
ages. Some of the math calculations can be done before I leave the house. Research and Document – Now is also a great time to research the climate and weather to see what experts say about what will grow well in my area. Pruning and removing protection from plants at the wrong time can be problematic. I also research topics I want to learn more about, like studying soil amendments to create the ideal growing environment, learning more about organic fertilizers, or discovering tips about how to nurture a certain type of flower I’ve always wanted to grow. Keeping a gardening journal is so helpful. Marking the date and weather conditions of gardening tasks each year helps you manage the chores in the future. Another research project to do now is check your soil. Buy a pH kit yourself or take a soil sample to your local extension. I also double check my catalog order shipping dates from previously placed orders so that I know when they are scheduled to arrive and I can be prepared. Preparing
Sharpen and Clean – If I didn’t do this at the end of the season, I do it now. Checking for rust and removing it, doing an inventory to see if anything needs to be replaced, and making repairs are all great indoor garden tasks. This includes making sure my pruning shears are sharp since that chore is just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but I feel encouraged at this point to know that much of the invisible work being done in winter is actually productive. Did you know that the melting snow actually delivers not just moisture to the soil but also nitrogen? Though we may not see everything that’s going on in nature to prepare our gardens, we can contribute ourselves by checking off the things on our list that we can do now to help, too. Woodrow D. Weasel is the resident gardening expert for Garden Weasel tools. Find more gardening tips at GroundBreakingTips.com. Garden Weasel also offers a variety of helpful tools at GardenWeasel.com.

RIVER CRUISES
A
New Year means it’s time to start planning your next dream trip. So where should you go? What are the “Hot Travel Destinations” around the world in 2015? Here are some of our recommendations:
NORWAY “Frozen” fans will flock to Norway to seek out Elsa and Anna’s fictional Arendelle, a kingdom of gorgeous landscapes of lakes, waterfalls, mountains, and fjords. The country has seen a huge growth in tourism since the release of the film and visitors will not be disappointed with its beauty.
JAPAN There is a new bullet train linking Tokyo to Kanazawa which means visitors can easily see more of the country without any additional air flights. With many Michelin starred restaurants, exquisite hotels, and a country filled with innovation, Now is the time to see historical landmarks and experience traditional practices before they are altered or disappear entirely as the country prepares for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
SOUTH AFRICA South Africa will become a more affordable destination with its recent currency fluctuations. From Cape Town to safaris to Kruger National Park, to wine tasting tours, watch for great discounts, especially in their non-peak seasons. A very family friendly destination, and although the press has put Ebola scare in the minds of travelers, South Africa is actually as far from any infected area as New York City is from Anchorage Alaska!
FLORENCE, ITALY Recently named the world’s best city for travelers by Conde Nast Traveler, it is a historic treasure filled with museums, restaurants, cathedrals, and art. It is also a gateway to other favorites of Italy including fabulous villas of Tuscany, beautiful Cinque Terra, wine-tasting, driving a Ferrari, and easy access to Venice, Rome, and Milan.
TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA Named one of the best regions to explore in 2015 and located south of mainland Australia, the island has gorgeous landscape, wild animals, heritage estates, premium wines, and some of the best mountain biking in the world. Adventure travelers will love exploring Tasmania’s rugged coastline and wilderness, while foodies and oenophiles will enjoy tasting the excellent wines and couples will find plenty of opportunities for romance.
NORTHERN IRELAND Just as Norway will benefit from the movie Frozen, “Game of Thrones” fans will naturally want to visit since season 5 is filming there. Highlights of travel include incredible natural wonders, like the Giant’s Causeway and the Slieve League Cliffs, as well as ruined medieval castles.
ICELAND There are a million reasons why you should visit Iceland, starting with winter travel for the amazing Aurora Borealis, which is at its most spectacular during February and March. The mountains, volcanoes, and glaciers are good for hiking, climbing, dog-sledding; waves great for surfing, caves for exploring, and its barren highlands for jeep safaris. The largely uninhabited land has such rugged beauty and diversity, no wonder it tops so many Bucket Lists!
PANAMA World-class attractions where two worlds meet, this is a destination of incredible variety that melds Caribbean, Latin and Central America, with colonial flavor and unbound nature. Now a sovereign, fully democratic country, it is perfect for adventure seekers and eco-tourists.
NEW OCEAN CRUISE SHIPS If the large ocean cruising is more your thing, there are some spectacular new ships arriving in 2015. Watch especially for Royal Caribbean’s new Anthem of the Seas (sister ship of the new Quantum of the Seas which debuted in fall 2014), Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Norwegian Escape, and a new first for Viking as the Viking Star will represent that river cruise line’s first foray into ocean cruising.
RIVER CRUISES Already a popular choice, especially in Europe, the river cruise industry is definitely booming. These cruises offer a more intimate and cultural experience, and are truly floating hotels, rather than the large ocean liners. Carrying usually 160 passengers or less, guests embark right in the center of the cities, and immediately immerse themselves in the culture. Many countries of the world have rivers, however, so watch for emerging river cruise offerings in China, Africa, Southeast Asia, and even the USA! I
n my rootless days before our daughter was born, travel was a constant for me. My parents instilled in my brothers and me a love of seeing new places and leaving the familiar behind for short bursts, with the comfort of knowing my home was always waiting for me. As a young adult I was my mother’s frequent travel companion for wine adventures in Europe and beachy outings to Mexico. When I married, my husband and I were inveterate travelers. We thought nothing of taking off at a moment’s notice for a weekend in a coastal town or grabbing a last minute deal on an all-inclusive anywhere. When Natalie arrived fifteen years ago, there was no thought to changing that existence. After all, she had come to live with us,
not the other way around, we reasoned. Adaptation to our wanderlust would be part of her upbringing. In those first few years, as she grew up into our lives, tying us as securely to her routine as a vine winding up the post holds it down to the earth, we slowed our pace. But we soon discovered a great travel truth - a child is eminently portable, and therefore an excellent travel accessory. Granted, they come with a lot of stuff, but in the days before excess baggage fees that was a minor concern. Soon Natalie was as good at airport security and pulling her own travel weight as any jet-setter. But the aforementioned mother was not to be left behind. Add to that the desire to spend as much time as possible with

We also wished to forge strong bonds between Natalie and her grandparents and older sister, ones not dependent upon us and only accompanied by turkey or Christmas carols. We decided travel could and should be a family affair; a multi-generational adventure that has something for everyone
Our first adventure with the grandmothers was a week in Mexico. I made the travel arrangements (so as to suit our more rigid work schedules;) they paid their own way (which they were thrilled to do with the prospect of having the undivided attention of their children and grandchild for a week.)
For weeks prior to the trip our regular Sunday dinners were filled with conversation about day trips, restaurants to try, sunscreens and swimsuits, and best of all, memories of trips taken years ago. My daughter heard stories of a runaway trip to Mexico City before my mother’s wedding, and of a road trip vacation involving a bear, a snake and some roadside picnics when her father was a baby. The prospect of traveling all together brought out a side to our mothers that we had rarely seen and Natalie had never witnessed. Their quest for more adventure was not the slightest bit sated by the advancing years. The trip itself we made as painless as possible; direct flights, meals for the plane which I prepared and carried in a collapsible lunch bag, cars to meet us at the airport, private tours at historic places, early dinner reservations, and comfortable accommodations involving kitchens so we could eat at least a few meals comfortably and more affordably at home. We tried to build in nap time (necessary for all of us, not just the baby!) and were completely amenable to spontaneous modifications of the schedule. We practiced much patience with one another, and found that the relaxation of being on vacation brought out the best behavior in us all. Our first grand-trip was a huge success. We have since traveled together to Mexico seven times, to the eastern and western Mediterranean, spots in North Africa, all over Italy, along the St. Lawrence River from Montreal to Boston, to the Amalfi Coast, the volcano of Vesuvius and its ruined Pompeii, to New York and to the islands of Malta and Sicily. We have been in art galleries in Florence, the armory of the Knights Templar in Malta, and the souk in Tunisia (where the combined shopping influences of both grandmothers and daughter convinced me that splurging on a gorgeous Persian rug was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - they were right.) We have attended Mass in cathedrals grand and churches tiny all over the world, including the oldest extant church in North continued >

America where Mass is still said in French, and the lovely cathedral of Monaco, where Prince Albert was also a worshipper that day and Princess Grace’s tomb ever bears fresh flowers. One of our most memorable days was a private (well, as private as you can get with 5000 other people) audience in Vatican City with Pope Benedict on my mother-inlaw’s 83rd birthday. Truly an experience none of us will ever forget, whether we have perhaps a dozen active years left, or our entire lifetime stretches out before us. We have discovered that cruising is a particularly painless way to travel with multiple generations. Advantages include only unpacking once, familiar food (especially wonderful when dealing with sometimes tricky and always finicky older and younger tummies) and best of all, predictable plumbing. My mother and I once paid admission to a public W.C. in Italy which we discovered to be a row of holes in a concrete floor with heel grooves thoughtfully placed beside. Do not underestimate the soothing power of American bathroom
engineering. On a cruise ship my husband dances divinely with both his mother and his daughter, my motherin-law can entrance the piano bar with her singing, and my daughter learns the exquisite table manners and conversational skill that come from their combined 170-plus years of ladyhood. I have the privilege of watching her bloom under their adoring
who served near there in WWII. That’s what grand-tripping does for us; we each will have the time to do what makes us happy and relaxed while traveling, while indulging in the ultimate luxury of being with those we love most. My daughter gets to bank these precious days with her grandmothers as security against a future when they may be too frail to join us, or when she is eventually traveling with her own family. There are many legacies I hope we are able to leave her, but this is the best - that of a lifetime of loving going and doing, with those she loves, across all our generations.

attention while they get to pass on cherished family stories and memories. They are relaxed knowing every detail of travel will be handled by someone who knows their breaking points and makes sure their needs are met. We are currently planning a trip to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. While I don’t expect the “moms” to join us snorkeling, they will no doubt love to tell us stories of previous visits to the islands or of the long-deceased grandfather my daughter never knew

he past year has been an interesting one in the automotive industry, with technology making the biggest splash for 2014. This year promises to continue the trend with advancements in safety, lighting, more hybrid models, better values, and, of course, stunning design. In this edition of Street Lines, we want to showcase the latter by providing a sneak peek of some of the new models entering
the showroom floors thanks to our recent visit to sunny South Florida’s 44th Annual Miami International Auto Show that took place on November 7-16 through the 16th. Besides the product from the world’s leading automakers, other attractions from the show included Topless In Miami’s flaunting of convertibles, Camp Jeep’s amazing driving course, Million Dollar Alley’s exotic cars some of us

Now that my son is a teenager, he doesn’t really enjoy my presence at the school as much. I hope this changes when he goes to college since I would like to be his roommate.

Parting Thoughts
You’re Invited to Join the Great Purge & Clean of 2015! Words Lisa Cooke Harrison
H
appy New Year! Now that you’ve got your fitness and wellness goals firmly in place, it’s time to look closely at the space around you and ask yourself, “Are things looking a little cluttered?” or “Are my closets bursting at the seams?” Why not set a goal to de-clutter and, more importantly, simplify this year? Several years ago, I was inspired by a book called Simple Abundance to set a goal to clean, sort and rid my home of much of the stuff that was being stored but rarely (or never) used in spare drawers, closets, cabinets and bookshelves around my home. Finding truth in the idea that ‘we fill the space we have’ meant that my home-sweet-home was filled to the brim. Like many of you, I’m blessed to live in a house with extra closets, an extra bedroom and lots of built-in cabinets and book shelves. I realized in the 12 years we’d lived in our home, we’d filled all of these spaces. It was time to attack them and I needed a plan. My goal? To get rid of something nearly every day. As I sit and watch television in the evenings, I try to use that time to clean out a drawer or two or a shelf in one of the nearby closets. (Commercials are the perfect time to put things back.) One night I carried all of the plastic shoe boxes that make up our first aid and medicine closet supplies. It’s amazing how many nearly empty bottles of cough syrup and Tums we’d accumulated. 34
SW Lake Lifestyle | January 2015
An hour later my waste basket was full and I’d easily pitched more than a dozen items and so my goal for that week was met. Once upon a time I thought every bookshelf should be lined with books and so I collected and I kept every book I finished. Now I take pride in half empty bookshelves that provide me with space to show off pretty collectibles and a few framed family photos. My beloved got involved at a different level. He started selling things on Craig’s List and eBay. Suddenly the wood chipper and junior golf clubs in the garage had each brought in $50. That alone was motivation for him to keep posting. We agreed this method was significantly easier than a garage sale since we both work full time. Twice a year I go through my son’s closets and dressers. It doesn’t take more than 20 minutes of playing “Keep or toss?” with my growing teens to whittle down their t-shirt collection and get rid of the clothes that no longer fit. Since they seem to come home with a t-shirt a week from one activity or another, it’s easy for them to have 10 favorites and ignore the rest. Do you ever find yourself watching an episode of something on your computer? Use that time to organize and purge from your desk, home office space or kitchen, depending on where your computer lives. The organizational experts all seem to agree—if it isn’t useful, sentimental or beautiful, it might be time to let it go.

After 20 Years of Getting the Wrong Vein Treatment a Woman Finds Hope. "Both my parents had varicose veins were very painful and my ankles were so now have ankles. They are not swollen and I can remember having varicose vein issues in my early 20's. I had my 8irst sclerotherapy injections at the age of 23 before my wedding. My veins progressively got worse with each p r e g n a n c y a n d w i t h a g e . A f t e r t w o pregnancies, one of which was twins, my veins were unsightly, bulging and caused much discomfort. When I was 36 years old, I started sclerotherapy injections again and for the next 20 years I would go periodically for sclerotherapy which provided only temporary improvement and relief.
swollen all the time. I hated to wear skirts, dresses and capris because everyone was able to see my swollen ankles, my swollen legs and my bulging veins. I was convinced that I would just have to live with all of these issues. But, also in the back of my mind, I would keep thinking of my mother and her painful veins with the open sores she developed and I really did not want to go down that same path. Then, during one of my annual doctor visits, my physician suggested that I see Dr. Rivard.
and I would go for more injections and this cycle would go on for years. I saw doctors all over the Chicago land area. Through the years, I developed phlebitis which left very dark scars on my right leg, about 6 inches above my ankle. None of the sclero treatments helped and I was forced to constantly wear leg makeup in the summer to cover up my legs, but the makeup never matched my skin color and looked absolutely awful. I also developed venous insuf9iciency which basically restricted the blood 8low to the bottom portion of my right leg and left the leg a dark reddish color and as hard as a tree trunk. The skin surrounding my veins also started getting very thin. Every winter, I needed to moisturize my legs constantly to prevent my skin from breaking open and leaving an open wound that would take months to heal. This happen often on throughout the years.
