Editor’s Letter

And just like that, it’s March.

MARCH 2015 publisher

Traditionally March is the promise of the return of life, of green, of sweet things singing of spring. I always stop and admire that first little crocus, which has often pushed its way through a lingering cover of snow. March in the Midwest is a promise of release from winter’s long hold. Timely. By now most of us have become tired of the cold. We all seem to be wearing it like a favorite wool sweater, which at first felt cozy and handsome, but now, worn too long, has become a little drab, a little stretched and a bit tired. I hold that March, somewhere between winter and spring, is at least a promise of things to come. No, it is not warm. It is not spring - but it has small, yet significant, ways of letting us know winter is losing its grip. For me it is the crocus, and the days getting longer in daylight. The two are wonderful little signs of the beauty to come.

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and the largest of its cities. Dublin is an easy city to walk your way around; it also has an efficient “hop-on, hop-off” bus system to maximize time exploring. Christchurch and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are two of the most popular local churches and wonderful to see. Include time to visit to Dublin Castle and Trinity College, where the 9th century Book of Kells is on display in the library. Tours of the Guinness Storehouse and the Old Jameson Distillery offer tasting opportunities, even before lunch. Enjoy a great local brew in the Temple Bar area during an afternoon of shopping. If something more relaxing is your style, consider a visit to Dublin’s zoo. It’s a great way to spend a few hours. BLARNEY CASTLE

A great little town called Sneem makes a fine lunch stop and has a selection of small establishments to choose from. CLIFFS OF MOHER

One of the most visited areas in Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher are amazing sandstone walls with heights hundreds of feet above the Atlantic Ocean. The views of the sea are spectacular! The Curious Case of the Accidental

umanitarian

Dr. Chris Stout is living a life in full.

ARTICLE WENDY WILLISON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

18

SW Lake Lifestyle | March 2015

I

t’s a pretty safe bet that if you guess how many SW Lake residents have been invited to TED conferences, have presented Davos for the World Economic Forum, and have spent time in three Bolivian prisons, that that number would be one. And if you’re curious who this is, keep reading… Kildeer’s Chris Stout received his first doctorate degree (he has four honorary ones in addition to the one he went to graduate school for) in clinical psychology, but it’s been 20 years since he was in practice. Today he’s director of the Department of Research and Data Analytics at ATI Holdings, LLC, the third largest sports medicine and orthopedic rehabilitation company in the U.S. He is also on faculty at the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and serves on the board of their Center for Global Health. But it is his non-profit 501(c) Center for Global Initiatives that he credits for his South American jail time as well as invitations to more coveted conferences. “I had published a few books in the areas of conflict, policy and diplomacy. I served as a Special Representative for year at the United Nations. I was on the Lake County Board of Health for a decade. And I’d seen a lot of things in my travels (his current count is nearing 90 countries) that were pretty upsetting. So I wanted to do something about it that combined these various aspects of my background,” Stout explains. His first attempt was called “Summits for Others,” wherein he combined climbing the Seven Summits with fundraising for international

non-governmental organizations and then again for a friend. The Seven Summits are the tallest mountain on each continent. Stout has done three such climbs to date and the friend for whom he helped raise funds is today is a business partner in Tanzania. “I was totally clueless as to how charities operate, all of the complexities involved,” Stout recalls. “But thanks to my mentor and his wife, we got the Center off the ground.” In the early days, the Center was working to establish projects and collaborate with other international non-profits in Vietnam, Tanzania, Cambodia, Benin, Rwanda and Bolivia to provide medical services and educational support. “We were working in a rather notorious Bolivian men’s prison in La Paz called San Pedro, and I contracted dysentery there—which was not fun in more ways than one…” Today, the Center has evolved into supporting and providing tools for others running non-profits or those who hope to start one. “All of those involved with the work of the Center are volunteers—our Board, our attorneys, myself, even our website hosting. The good thing is that this model allows for all donations to go to the work. The bad thing is we all have to have our day-jobs and cannot devote as much in-country work as we would like to.” This realization came about when being invited to partner with another group on a project in Ukraine. “We uncomfortably realized that if the grant was awarded, no one from our Center would be able to commit the considerable time needed in Kiev.” Stout calls this new approach “open-source humanitarianism.” It can be pretty hard to get an organization launched. Often the individ-

uals wanting to do good are not interested in building a non-profit, they just want to do the work. And that is a difficult model to sustain. “So, while our Center maintains the support of our Tanzania partner, we also provide a ridiculous and ever-growing amount of tools that are all free of charge: our website, our newsletter, my LinkedIn Influencer blogs, presentations, NPR podcasts, and any other way we can come up with.” The Center’s website links to free online courses in global health with an online library of open access medical books and journals. The DropBox account has more than 2,000 articles, and there are links for discounted humanitarian airfares and other online travel resources. There is a downloadable spreadsheet that provides information on other helpful websites and users’ opinions of them. The Center helped ATI’s MissionWorks and others with fundraising tools, and they have a new Humanitarian Field Guide available on Amazon. Open-Source Humanitarianism at work. “The American Psychological Association once said of my Davos days that ‘it is the rare psychologist who gets to trade intellectual bon mots with international luminaries such as Bono, Al Gore, Tony Blair and both Clintons...’ and I suppose that’s true. But, honestly, anyone from any field could do the same, and likely do even better.” Stout’s experience over the years working with other invitees in the World Economic Forum led to his publishing a three-volume book set, The New Humanitarians: Inspiration, Innovations, And Blueprints For Visionaries. “I basically wanted to interview my heroes of humanitarian intervention and see how they did it so I could try to do the same... Now everyone can.” Given his clinical and research background, Stout focuses hard on outcomes. He’s particularly proud of the Center’s Silver Status with GuideStar and, for three years running, being voted a top non-profit by Great Nonprofits. Most meaningful, however, is what he calls the “73-cents-a-life Project.” “A few years ago, our colleagues working in two Tanzanian hospitals were dealing with a big uptick in treating malaria cases. While prevention is best, these folks were sick. We were able to procure the medication needed and at follow-up learned that we were able to treat each case for an average cost of 73 cents. I was amazed at how much could be done at such an amazing low cost. It is that kind of event that keeps me going.” What’s next for the Center? They are planning to create a Consortium for Humanitarian Intervention: an emerging group of medical schools, gradual programs and global non-profits committed to connecting projects, students and those in need, all in a resource-conscious manner. When he is not at work, or in a Bolivian prison compound, or out lecturing as he did on the last World Health Day with Jody Williams, Stout enjoys running in the local forest preserves and in racing events with his daughter, Annika, a junior at Stevenson High School. He has been married for 30 years to Dr. Karen Beckstrand, a clinical psychologist in private practice. When school schedules allow, their son, Grayson, a college sophomore, joins the family for less hectic travel venues. While Stout did not set out for a career, nor a life, such as this, it certainly seems to fit him well. Visit CenterForGlobalInitiatives.org for more information about the Center for Global Initiatives.

Sweet Home Value Added in Version 2.0

ARTICLE PATRICK A. FINN PHOTOGRAPHY PATRICK A. FINN CUSTOM HOMES & REMODELING

REMODELING PROJECTS TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME

Many homeowners take pride in the appearance of their homes, but after a while some become bored or dissatisfied with the look, or layout, of certain areas of their homes that they may have out grown. The changing needs and lifestyles of homeowners sometimes conflict with the desire to stay in the current home and neighborhood, creating a demand for renovating. This desire to create something new within your living space leads to a variety of remodeling projects that not only improve the look of the home, will also increase resale value. Home remodeling is a big endeavor that can cost thousands of dollars, making it important to choose the right project to add value to your home and make it a comfortable place to live. The 2015 Cost vs. Value report statistics prove that the following remodeling projects, all located in the Chicagoland area, will add the most resale value to your home.

THE KITCHEN

Kitchens are the top requested home renovation project by homeowners, as we all love to gather there—not only everyday but also for special events with friends and family. Full kitchen remodeling projects that require the area to be gutted and rebuilt usually add some value to your home, having a recoup of about 68 percent. These projects might include taking down walls, changing cabinet layout, adding pantry space or even more lighting. Thankfully, it is still possible to increase the resale value by as much as 80 percent with projects slightly smaller than a full remodel. You can still completely revamp the look of your kitchen by replacing existing cabinet doors, countertops, appliances, and sinks with new products for about two-third the price of a full kitchen rebuild. It is wise to spend no more than 20 percent of your home’s total value when remodeling your kitchen. Any spending beyond this will not be compensated by the immediate resale value.

MASTER BATHROOM RENOVATION

Bathrooms are the next most heavily remodeled areas of a home. A clean, well-designed bathroom is a major selling point in a home, and also gives the homeowner a place to escape for some R&R. An effective, yet relatively inexpensive way to update the look of your bathroom is to repaint, retile, and replace the fixtures, keeping your budget under $15,000. Homeowners desiring a larger or more luxurious project might like to consider in-floor heating, a walk-in shower or even a sound system to add to the wow factor of a master suite. A bathroom remodel project can bring a return on investment of around 70 percent. If you have multiple bathrooms, take some time to consider your options and choose projects that will bring the most benefit.

BASEMENT REMODELING

If the home has an unfinished basement, you can add significant resale value by simply remodeling the basement into a usable space. Maybe your desire is to have a place to practice your hobby, or add another bed and bath to the home, or create an entertainment space for watching movies or gatherings with friends? Remodeling an unfinished basement into usable space is guaranteed to bring a return on investment because you are repurposing an existing space inside your home. You are essentially adding to your home’s square footage without building an addition—or increasing utility costs—which makes this kind of project one of the better returns on investment. Finished basements usually have a return on investment of up to 74 percent although the exact amount may vary, depending on the size of the basement.

EXTERIOR REPLACEMENTS

There are also many small, less expensive changes that you can make to your home. Replacing doors, windows or the siding of your house will also increase its resale value. Old windows and doors can be a detriment to living conditions if they let in too much noise or outside air. Picking newer accessories can help recoup your money anywhere from 79 to 92 percent. Also, you can expect a return of 79 percent on new vinyl siding. However, the larger remodeling projects discussed above bring the highest return on investment in terms of resale value. Each of these remodeling projects can get expensive without smart budgeting so it is important for homeowners to choose their projects wisely, create a realistic budget, and hire a home remodeling expert for professional assistance. Talk to an experienced professional from Patrick A. Finn Custom Homes and Remodeling about your next remodeling project. CONTINUED >

HOME SWEET HOME (CONTINUED)

DECK ADDITION

Decks and outdoor living space become a necessity in the warmer months for get-togethers and quality time with family. Using wood or composite is personal preference and both types of decking have a worthwhile return on investment. Composite decking is becoming more and more popular because of its long lifespan and low maintenance. Though the upfront cost may be a little more than wood decking, some homeowners enjoy the little amount of upkeep needed and now composite material boasts a 71 percent return. Wood decking comparatively does cost less than composite and many homeowners still prefer the look and feel of wood. This kind of deck will last several years and still have a 93 percent return on investment, making wood a better option if you may sell your home within 5 years.

A KITCHEN REMODEL

Satisfied owner shares her experience working with Patrick A. Finn Custom Homes and Remodeling “I can’t thank you enough for bringing my dream kitchen to life. It’s stunning and I wouldn’t change a thing if I did it over again. You brought the best crew anyone could have asked to work with. We miss them around here!”

THE PROJECT:

This major kitchen remodel and addition done by Patrick A. Finn Custom Homes and Remodeling transform how this family lives and entertains. The “before” kitchen was outdated and not large enough, no longer useful nor functional for a family that loves to cook and entertain. Bumping out the back wall and demolishing the existing interior wall created a large open space for family gatherings. High-end appliances are fully integrated into beautiful custom walnut cabinets and then polished off by gorgeous marble countertops on the perimeter and end grain walnut for the island. Framing the kitchen is a beautiful picture window with a stunning golf course view. This is truly a space to cook, gather and entertain.

Real Wives

INTRODUCING

Swati Arndt REAL WIVES OF SW LAKE WHO LIVES IN YOUR HOUSE?

My husband, Steve and my 9-year-old daughter, Siyona WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME? IF SO, WHERE?

Currently, I am at home. By the end of the year, I hope to be back into the pharmaceutical industry that I practiced in for 12 years. NATIVE OR TRANSPLANTED TO THE AREA?

I was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and grew up in Mequon, Wisconsin. During my married life, we have lived in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, before moving here. WHAT’S ON THE FLOOR OF YOUR CAR RIGHT NOW?

A very well-used—and in bad need of restringing—tennis racket. I started learning to play 2 ½ years ago for the first time in my life. I absolutely love it. WHAT’S THE STRANGEST THING IN YOUR PURSE RIGHT NOW?

My purse is called the “Mom-do-you-have?” bag. It contains every possible item my daughter or my husband could ever possibly ask for, including a nail cutter, dental floss, measuring tape and Excedrin. Later in life, when my back can no longer handle the suitcase of a bag I carry, my husband and daughter will repay me with many back rubs. I look forward to those days. I also carry the $50 bill I won from a scratch-off lottery ticket I bought 15 years ago: I never take it out and I will never spend it.

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU?

FAVORITE ‘PAMPER YOURSELF’ OR SPLURGE ITEM? WHERE?

ORGANIZATION THAT GETS MOST OF YOUR VOLUNTEER TIME?

I just received the most wonderful facial at Red Cottage Salon & Spa. It was so wonderful that I plan to go once a month from now on. I also splurge on buying mostly organic food. GUILTIEST FOOD PLEASURE?

I volunteer at my daughter’s school, Kildeer Countryside, at least once a week at the library. I experience such great joy being around all the students. It fills my heart in a way that nothing else does. The staff at the school library is also a very special group. I always leave with a smile on my face and I always look forward to the next week.

Bacon! If I could, I would eat it at every meal. Mariano’s has a fantastic maple bacon doughnut that is out of this world.

BEST VACATION EVER?

I would hope that they would describe me as kind, generous and always there for them. I have been blessed with some very special friends in my life. I cherish all of them.

My book club is currently reading Two Brothers by Ben Elton. I also am reading The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Each sentence carries so much meaning that I can only get through a page or two at one time. I like to live with it in my head for a week or so before I continue on. This book will be on my nightstand for a long time.

The best vacation I ever had was my first visit to the Hawaiian Islands when I was in high school. I have been back two additional times and was fortunate enough to get very close to the lava from the Kilauea Volcano flowing into the ocean. It is truly the most spectacular thing I have ever seen. We are returning to Hawaii this spring break to take my daughter. We will also be going to Kenya and Tanzania in a few months and I suspect that our vacation to Africa will become my new favorite vacation.

BEST MOVIE YOU’VE SEEN IN THE PAST THREE MONTHS?

FAVORITE DATE NIGHT? WHERE?

I just recently saw the movie 42. It was a movie I didn’t think would interest me but I was captivated by it.

Friday nights laying on the couch with my husband in our sitting room, watching a movie and falling asleep in the middle of it.

BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN LAKE COUNTY?

UNIQUE OR INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF OR YOUR

We chose to live here because of the school system. Since moving here I have made some wonderful friendships and the location is perfect. We are close enough to the city of Chicago and to our families, who are in Wisconsin and Iowa. It has really been the ideal place for us.

COLLEGE YEARS? My head is so small I wear children’s hats. WHAT IS ONE THING NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I am very superstitious. WHO IS THE PERSON YOU RESPECT THE MOST, AND WHY?

WHAT DO YOU RECORD ON THE DVR OR WATCH ON-DEMAND?

I always DVR The Good Wife, Elementary, Suits…and my guilty pleasure, Scandal. Nothing makes a work out on the elliptical go faster than watching Scandal.

The person I respect the most is my husband’s grandmother. She is 92 years old, has survived her husband and her daughter, lives by herself, still drives, makes pickles and jam every year, quilts all year round and donates them to charity and is the sweetest person I know. She is the epitome of a decent and loving human being and I love spending time with her.

FAVORITE COCKTAIL?

My favorite drink is a Margarita, on the rocks with salt, or Bobby Flay’s Sangria.

WHAT OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES DO YOU LIKE TO DO?

I love playing tennis, going for walks, jet skiing and, when I can, spending as much time as possible in the ocean.

WHERE DO YOU WISH YOUR HUSBAND WOULD BUY YOUR NEXT GIFT?

I hope he buys it at the Apple store. I am desperate for a new iPhone. My current one is hinky ever since the last major update? What’s the deal with that?!

WHAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST PARTIES YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE INDOOR/OUTDOOR ACTIVITY?

WHAT’S THE #1 MOST PLAYED SONG ON YOUR IPOD?

Tennis. Indoor or outdoor

Anything by Bruno Mars. Currently, I can’t get enough of Uptown Funk.

FAVORITE GADGET OR GIZMO?

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE QUOTES?

My husband’s hands when he peels jpomegranates for me.

“Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” – Steve Jobs. I hope I don’t take a lifetime to fully embrace this.

My wedding. It was small, intimate and in a fabulous location (Hawaii!) with all the people I love.

Parting Thoughts

Bring it on, Mother Nature WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS

W

ay up on my list of things I inexplicably love is a nature-induced slow down. Probably a hangover from the grade school elation a snow day would bring, but as an adult there is nothing better than being forced into idleness by an event outside of your control. It’s the idea that you would have gotten everything on your list done, but just couldn’t because the plows didn’t hit your street and the courthouse is closed anyway. The day stretches luxuriously in front of you; there is enough food in the fridge, throws on the sofa, and movies on the DVR; ah, glorious snow day! Sometimes at the lake the summer storms blow in from the west with such alacrity and darkness that you can’t prudently drive home into it, or here on the plains the rains come sideways so there is no sense in trying to leave the restaurant until at least another round, or the ice covers everything with a sheen so treacherous you can only stay home and inside, and if your friends are stuck with you all the better. Once a decade ago the ice storms downed tree branches by the yards full, crushing patio furniture and ripping power lines off their poles; electricity was off for over a week, meaning no school, no work, no heat for many. My house stayed warm, through a combination of gas heat and improvised 34

furnace modifications, and we bravely cooked up the freezer goodies that wouldn’t be good in another two days using natural gas and candlelight. Family and friends stayed for days while the perilous outside world was off limits. It felt like we had escaped our everyday lives for a cocoon of slow, old-fashioned self-reliance. Knowing it would be temporary helped, but for a few days we entertained ourselves with piano and board games, reading and talking. The outside world felt distant and false. I like things to be in order, and with predictability; some less concerned about tact might call me a control freak. It must be that desire for structure that makes me contrarily love a snow day - I am forced to sit back and chill, let Mother Nature do her deeds, and there is nothing I can do about it. Then I feel free to let go of my needs in favor of something looser and bigger than me. I can enjoy my family safe in my warm home, and revel in this rare ability to linger in the moment with them. This week my Midwest city is staring down the barrel of a snow storm we have been spared thus far this winter. I have gone to the store, spread ice melt on the sidewalks, checked the candles and my calendar, and tamped down my anxiety about school closings. The weather gods will have their way with us, and I for one will revel in it.

Illinois Vein Specialists is Pleased to Introduce our Newest Doctor. Susan Kanehann MD. We are pleased to introduce Illinois Vein Specialist’s newest member Dr. Susan Kanehann. Like Dr. Rivard, Dr. Kanehann (Sue) started out working as an Emergency Room physician actually working for Dr. Rivard at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. He and two other physicians started the TriCounty Emergency Physicians group in 1984. At the time, emergency medicine was a brand new specialty. Sue became one of the first physicians under Dr. Rivard’s leadership in 1988 and continued to work for him until his retirement from the ER in 2006. Almost 25 years later, Dr. Rivard eventually set out to start another adventure, yet again becoming a pioneer - this time in the speciality of vein disease. In fact, Dr. Rivard was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to become board certified in venous and lymphatic medicine (varicose vein disease) in 2008. Dr. Kanehann would eventually rejoin Dr. Rivard to provide expert care as a varicose vein specialist.

As Sue remembers, “I knew from the 6th grade that I wanted to be a doctor - our Science teacher had us dissect frogs and I thought those squishy creatures were so organized and interesting, that people must be such much more interesting and organized. Then my father died of a heart attack. That galvanized my career choice, one that would be of continual learning and helping people ”get better.” I loved learning the facts, but more than that I loved “taking care” of people.” Dr. Kanehann graduated from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in 1980, two years after Dr. Rivard graduated from the same school. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine from Northwestern University in 1984 and went to work in the ER at Sherman Hospital in Elgin until joining the staff at Good Shepherd in 1988. She worked in Good Shepherd’s ER from then on until retiring last year. “I am so happy to have had that career; while it was very rewarding and I worked hard and met many wonderful people, it was time to move on. I was exhausted from all the chaos. Now, under the patient mentorship, and guidance of Dr. Steve Rivard, I’m becoming a vein doctor! Everyday I see things that I never appreciated before in the ER and I’m learning new things - it’s kind of thrilling!” Dr. Kanehann and her husband, also a physician, have lived in the Barrington area since 1985. They have 3 children, the youngest of whom is in medical school. She is an avid tennis player, a lover of dogs, and excited to be starting this new journey with Dr Rivard.
