n this issue, we celebrate the SW Lake community and all your area has to offer in May. With the return of milder weather and the opportunity to spend some time outdoors, it’s time to plan fun activities for your whole family. Your Lifestyle Calendar and Around Town departments are an easy way to learn about the many things planned for this wonderful month. We’re excited to introduce you to a few local neighbors including Lindy’s Landing, located in Wauconda on Bangs Lake. The family-owned restaurant has been in operation 50 years and we are honored to celebrate with them this summer. Take a look inside Avalon Salon and Day Spa in Deer Park as we feature this Aveda concept salon in our Local Spotlight section. It’s also the start of the festival season and first up in our area is the Long Grove Chocolate Fest. Three full days of chocolate bliss, activities and music returns mid-month so mark your calendar—especially if you have a sweet tooth! Putting this issue together was a joy as there are so many happenings and events to share with you. Mother’s Day will always be the highlight of May and I hope that you celebrate yours in her favorite manner—whether you head out to a fancy brunch, surprise her with a spa visit or enjoy a peaceful day outside together—let the day be all about Mom. She deserves it! See you around town,

Guests often comment that they love our welcoming approach and enjoy their services even more because they never feel rushed.
We invite you to relax and balance your mind, body and spirit in our spa. Each service begins with an AVEDA sensory journey ritual. Three essential oils are presented to discover which aroma best lifts your spirit on that day. Aromas create new lasting memories, or may trigger a moment in time by channeling the brains limbic system. The next step to each facial or massage is a relaxing aroma foot soak. One of our new favorite aromas is AVEDA’s Stress fix. Is your stress level high? A few deep breaths of this lavender infused oil will calm you down. Giving back is one of our core values, and we build our team on that foundation. In the end, our customers are inspired to join in our efforts. Just by doing what we do naturally, we have become known in our community as the premiere salon and day spa that supports our community and serves with a caring heart. We use exclusively AVEDA organic products, and offer them for guest home care. We are committed to the holistic approach to beauty and wellness, and believe a “green salon” is not just a trend to follow but a way of life. We believe in leading the path to environmentalism by aligning ourselves with the AVEDA mission, and searching for new ways to improve on our responsibility to lead others to join us. It’s all about the experience. Whether it is a neck and back chair massage; stress-relieving scalp massage; sensory journey of AVEDA’s aromatic oils, or makeup touch-up. We never skip steps when it comes to meeting AVEDA’s signature added-value services.

Lindy’s Landing Celebrating 50 Years Family, Friends and Food on Bangs Lake ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 1970 - 1990
B
ob Lindstrom aka “Lindy” was born in 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. Even as a small child Lindy always seemed to have a passion for people and boating. In the 1960’s Lindy used to drive his family from the outskirts of Chicago to a small town called Wauconda. After falling in love with the town and Bangs Lake, Lindy decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning his own lakeside bar/marina. Lindy bought Farman’s rickety old boathouse in 1965 and realized his dream…he called it Lindy’s Landing. Lindy’s Landing became known as a family place to swim, picnic, boat and fish. In the 1960s, the boathouse remained a version of the original building built in 1908 and consisted of a small bar, candy counter and two pinball machines. In those early years, the business was seasonal and only open Memorial Day through Labor Day. In the 1970s, Lindy’s business continued to grow, so the family permanently relocated to Wauconda and the business began operating year round. During the next few years there were multiple building upgrades and renovations. Adding more barstools 16

and tables meant more business, so it was then that Lindy started selling fresh hand patted burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches and the occasional Sloppy Joe. At that time the food offering was
The motivation behind these improvements was to restore the resort-style atmosphere of years gone by and continue to provide access for the general public to use and enjoy Bangs Lake. This enabled Lindy’s Landing to grow into a full-service restaurant serving lunch and dinner daily. It was then that Lindy’s Burgers and Friday Night Fish Fry became famous and Lindy’s Landing became known for its live music lineup and annual events such as the Fireworks over Bangs and the Cardboard Boat Regatta. Lindy’s was quickly becoming the place to be for summertime fun! 2003 TO PRESENT
small, but the menu items were made from fresh ingredients in a small galley style kitchen run by Lindy’s three daughters. As the bar/restaurant continued to flourish, so did the marina. On most summer days you would find Lindy himself sitting on a picnic table with his black lab, “Old Blue,” greeting the boaters as they launched their boats for a day of fun on Bangs Lake. Lindy loved life, family and friends and lived life to the fullest until February 2000. 2003 REMODEL
Wanting to keep the legacy of Lindy’s Landing alive, not only for Lindy but also the community, his three daughters--Laurie, Cheryl and Bonnie--decided to keep the business going. With help from Lindys’ own family and friends the business continued to f lourish and in 2003 the humble boathouse received a facelift with new siding and the addition of an outside beach bar and 2,000-square-foot deck, which still exists today.
The old building was starting to show its age and due to the growing popularity more changes needed to be made to meet customer demand, especially during the winter months. So, in October 2006 the decision was made to remodel yet again, which turned into a complete tear down of the old boathouse. In its place now stands a brand new 7,000-square-foot, 200-seat restaurant and 100-seat dining deck built on the same spot the original boathouse stood some 100 years ago. As you walk through the restaurant take a stroll down memory lane as you pass by pictures of the original Lindy’s and other Bangs Lake landmarks from years ago. The original bar top from 1965 still remains as a reminder of where it all started. People continue to belly up to Lindy’s old bar as new family, friends and memories are made. Three generations and more than 45 years later Lindy’s Landing is still going strong. Lindy’s three daughters still operate the business today along with Lindys’ five grandchildren (Brittany, Kellen, Rachel, Carly and Bradley) and amazing staff. As a family, they continue to commit themselves to keeping the Lindy’s spirit alive for many generations to come. With the community's continued support, the family looks forward to celebrating 50 years of Lindy’s Landing in 2015.

START YOUR GARDEN GROWING WITH THE NATIVE PLANT, SHRUB AND TREE SALE
Native plants provide many advantages for gardeners and the environment. They do not require fertilizers or pesticides which save gardeners both time and money. In addition, their deep, fibrous root systems firmly anchor in soil to help conserve water and prevent erosion. Native plants do not require watering once established, but instead provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Choose from native perennials, grasses, sedges, ferns, butterfly and rain gardens, native wildflowers, plants for woodlands, prairies and wetlands. Citizens for Conservation will hold its 19th annual Native Plant, Shrub and Tree Sale on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A huge selection of robust, hardy native plants will be available for purchase and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to answer questions.
AND A TRAIL WALK, TOO!
CFC kicks off this year with free interactive self-guided prairie walks at Flint Creek Savanna Preserve on Sunday, May 10, from 1- 4 p.m. Wildflowers will be in bloom so do bring a smartphone with a scanner app and access videos of experts along the trail, if you like. Wear good hiking shoes; maps and refreshments will be provided. The Savanna and Prairie Trail will be open to the public the first Sunday of each month, June through September. FAMILIES THAT SEINE TOGETHER …
Join Tom Vanderpoel for a close look at native fish of Illinois on Saturday, June 13, from 1-4:30 p.m. We will drive to a local creek or lake to wade and capture fish using seines (nets). This is an exciting way to discover the amazing creatures living in our local water systems. Don’t miss it! This class is open to children age 6 and above. Parents are required to attend. Secrets of the Ladies Mission Society WRITTEN BY LAURIE ROTHROCK DICK REVIEWED BY RHIANNON BANKES
S
et in the small, Southern town of Simpsonville, Alabama in the 1950s, Secrets of the Ladies Mission Society, will appeal to lovers of The Help and Fried Green Tomatoes. When the town doctor, Lester Seabrook, passes away, many in the community mourn but none pay much attention to his grieving widow, Adie. The ladies in town have never invited her into their close circle despite the fact that she stood by their beloved doctor’s side as his nurse for decades, seeing them each through many joys and heartaches. As a poor farm girl, Adie snagged up one of the most eligible bachelors in their small town, and the ladies have never forgotten it. But when word gets out that Miss Adie is writing a book about the history of the town and its people, members of the local Ladies Mission Society begin clutching their pearls. Determined to find out what exactly Adie plans to include in her book, the ladies begin to descend on her home with their most-prized casseroles and cakes. Miss Adie’s caretaker, Eula, escorts each of the ladies to Miss Adie’s bedside and then fills their refrigerator with the guests’ offerings, (while the women try to peak in kitchen to see who has al-
ready visited based on their signature dishes.) Determined to keep their secrets safe, the ladies each assess Adie’s health and question whether she will expose their secrets as revenge for never being invited into the Ladies Mission Society. On a good day, Adie recognizes each woman and makes round-about acknowledgements regarding their pasts. On a bad day, she simply looks out the window at the barren land that was once her and Doc’s thriving garden. While each woman relives their darkest secrets, they come to their own realizations after their visits. They know that if not for the prospect of a published account of their buried secret, they never would not have faced their pasts and continued to carry their burdens alone. As each of the women’s stories of abuse, teen pregnancy, affairs, and suicide unravel, so does their perception of Adie, and in turn others in their close circle and community. They learn that they can change their own and the town’s future and unite in an effort to show Adie Doc’s love as well as respect Doc’s wishes for the future. This southern story touches on the darkest secrets in every community but focuses on the love and forgiveness that makes it thrive. Laurie Rothrock Dick is a former magazine editor, public relations/marketing manager, newspaper feature writer and copywriter. Secrets of the Ladies Mission Society is her first novel.

Motherhood Is Not For The Fainthearted WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA BERRA
Doreen and Ivwa snuggle with little Yande (center). DOREEN
As an ambitious young woman in love with a high-spirited New Yorker, Doreen Sternkopf pictured the happy life ahead: marriage, children, a home full of laughter and music. But the realities of motherhood rarely meet the expectations of the uninitiated. “Living so far away from family is hard,” explains Doreen. With her extended family in Zambia and her in-laws in New York, she dedicates her life to caring for her two young children in Parker, Colorado. Ivwa, the eldest, is a gifted student. She excels at ballet, sings in the Young Voices of Colorado, plays chess, writes poetry, and has a great many friends. Yande, the youngest, is a quiet soul. As a baby, he suffered frequent, debilitating seizures. After years of tests, treatments, surgeries and agonizing research, the seizures are under control, but Yande’s condition has never been identified. He cannot run, play or talk, and has limited control over his body. He has a feeding tube, that attaches directly to his stomach, and a wheelchair. Yande smiles when listening to music and laughs at his sister talking in funny voices, revealing a sweet and happy personality. It is these small things that fill Doreen’s heart with joy. “The stress piles up, but I don’t worry,” she says softly. “At the end of each day, I submit to the Lord. Also, it helps to have an understanding husband.” Doreen turns as Ivwa clatters into the house, grabs her cycle helmet and darts out again. Yande relaxes peacefully on the couch. “I love motherhood! I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” SHEYNA
On a sunny Memorial Day nine years ago, Sheyna and James Marshall, and their three small children, were waiting at a red light in their Oldsmobile. Little Makenna was two years old, Justin was five and big brother Christian was almost seven. Suddenly, a teenaged driver, racing his friend, lost control and violently smashed into the Oldsmobile, flipping both cars. As the Marshall family helplessly spun upside down in the road, another street-racing youth plowed into them. 34
SW Lake Lifestyle | May 2015
Makenna suffered broken legs, and Justin was critically injured, with gasoline burns, a broken leg and a crushed skull, requiring numerous surgeries. He was in a coma for months. Sheyna's “beautiful boy,” Christian, was killed instantly. Sheyna helped Justin slowly learn to function with brain damage, a paralyzed left arm and an impaired leg. She nursed her daughter back to health and was blessed with another baby girl, Brooklyn. The military family was transferred from Washington, D.C. to San Antonio and on to Colorado Springs, where Sheyna continued to raise her three happy, resilient kids. In 2010, Sheyna put her immense courage, strength and fiercely protective instincts to good use, serving her community as a police officer in Fountain, Colorado. She also volunteers with Drive Smart Colorado, educating high school students about the devastating consequences of speeding and distracted driving. She introduces Christian through videos and stories, so he can inspire the teens to drive responsibly. Two years ago, the American Mothers organization named Sheyna the Colorado Young Mother of the Year, in recognition of her dedication to saving lives. Her advice to new moms: “There will be some very good times and some very low times, but ultimately it’s a beautiful ride.” Police Officer Sheyna Marshall with her children (from left) Brooklyn, Makenna and Justin.
“The minute my veins showed up again, I knew I was pregnant” didn’t even need to take a test. Seriously, it was that bad!”
Prevention Beyond Treatment
Heather Rohlwing, Jill Gaffney-Barnum, Denise Gaffney, Dr. Stephen Rivard, Kristin Rivard, Tracey Masbaum
A
s only a mother can understand, pregnancy can ask a lot of your body. While there may be a few things that seem important to have done medically after child birth, it’s not uncommon for the needs of most mothers to be last on their “to do list”. Usually, by the time most get around to it, their children are off to college, and some of the bene?its of treating yourself while younger have lost its luster. Although having a few more hours of sleep or missing a workout between pick-‐ups may seem trivial, one thing should not be overlooked -‐ your health -‐ particularly when it involves proper blood ?low to your heart.
Pregnancy and Vein Disease
One of the most prevalent risk factors in developing varicose veins results from the common changes that naturally occur during pregnancy (e.g. increased estrogen and relaxin). These hormones breakdown the interior lining of the veins making them weaker and causing them to expand, eventually prohibiting their proper function of pumping blood back to the heart. In addition, the body works overtime to produce enough blood to grow the developing fetus, increasing pressure on the veins. When the veins become damaged in this manner, the increased pressure causes the blood to pool in the legs and ankles creating swelling and pain. Furthermore, r e s e a r c h h a s s h o w n t h a t t h e m o r e pregnancies a woman has the more likely she is to develop varicose veins.
Myth: Finish Having Children Then Treat your Varicose Veins
It is often common to hear your doctor say that you should wait until you are done having children before treating your veins, but the truth is you may be getting the wrong advice. Historically, this proved true but modern advancements have not only led to safer procedures, but have signi?icantly reduced the recurrence rate to less than 2% by treating varicosities at their source.
Unfortunately, most of these mothers were given inaccurate advice and suffered as a result. Denise mentions, “Looking back I didn’t realize how tired I always felt, I just thought it was a natural part of getting older…I originally had vein stripping, but that didn’t resolve the problem, and my veins got worse with each pregnancy, lots of protruding veins, pain, and swelling.”
While you may incur similar symptoms if you have more children, the misconception is that treating your veins along the way doesn’t necessarily help the process. When your veins become damaged as the result of vein disease they cannot be ?ixed, only removed. That’s why if you don’t treat them before your next pregnancy the pain and suffering will only increase as will your vein disease. In actuality, your Obstetrician should recommend you seek evaluation from a board certi?ied Phlebologist before becoming pregnant, which would actually help prevent a lot of the unnecessary symptoms of vein disease. On the other hand, if a woman anticipates becoming pregnant in the future and has suffered signi?icantly from vein problems in the past, that she should schedule a consultation to help reduce the pain and swelling during the next pregnancy. Kristin was treated after her second and third pregnancies, noticing that while the swelling and pain came back she at least reduced the pain in-‐between her pregnancies and decreased the pressure in her third pregnancy. In fact, when asked if she would have preferred waiting until she was done having children before getting the procedure, she stated, “I would not wait, the pressure from my second pregnancy one was so painful, I can’t imagine what it would have felt like had I not treated them prior to the third.” Heather, not knowing that she could have received treatment sooner, stated, “I did not realize how much pain I was in… literally, my legs were so bad by the third and fourth pregnancies that the minute my veins showed up again I knew I was pregnant, I
Stay Active. Using your muscles helps the veins pump blood to the heart thereby reducing pressure, pain, and swelling. Jill agreed saying, “I felt like my legs were not as painful during the second pregnancy as I ran often.” Kristin stated, “I felt that this really helped my circulation, my legs did not seem swollen after a run.” Compression Stockings. Compression is a great way to help increase circulation and alleviate pain and swelling. Heather being an advocate stated, “I used to roll out of bed and put on my support hose every day, I probably could not function without them.” Kristin agreed, “My legs would be in so much pain if I forgot to wear them when I was pregnant.” Keep a Healthy Weight. It’s often impossible during pregnancy to maintain your current size, but keeping a healthy weight will signi?icantly reduce the pressure on your legs and ankles. As Jill recalls, “I gained a little too much weight during my ?irst pregnancy, and I can remember having to put my feet up a lot, but I kept a better weight and stayed active during the second one and it really makes a difference.” Stay Informed. It’s important to know that vein disease is a real disease, requiring medical intervention whether or not you have pain. Tracey, did not notice her veins as they were not readily visible. However, reading how pregnancy can result in varicose veins she decided to get a consult and was informed by Dr. Rivard that one leg was in fact a 1/2 inch bigger in her ankle and 3/4 inch bigger in her thigh due to the swelling of her veins. Additionally, for breast-‐feeding mothers, the great news is that both the treatment of varicose and spider veins are FDA approved, and the solution used during sclerotherapy is non-‐toxic, and can simply be pumped out after treatment, allowing breast feeding within 6 hours.
