As we reflect on one incredible year of Temecula City Lifestyle, our joy is tempered by the heartbreak of the recent wildfires in Southern California.
Our hearts go out to every family and community touched by this tragedy. The Palisades and Eaton fires have caused unprecedented devastation, with over 38,000 acres burned and more than 12,000 structures destroyed at the time of this writing.
The fires have taken so much—homes, cherished spaces, and a sense of normalcy—but they have also revealed the unshakable strength of our Southern California community.
In moments like these, we are reminded of the power of connection and compassion. From neighbors opening their doors to those displaced, to countless volunteers and first responders who have tirelessly fought to protect what can be saved, we are inspired by the resilience and kindness that shines even in the darkest times.
Our March Home + Design issue focuses on the spaces that help us rebuild and reconnect—the places where we feel safe, loved, and inspired. Home, is a word that's definition somehow means more in the light of such loss. Home plays a central role in our families and memories and it is the setting for most of life's events.
We hope these stories bring you a sense of comfort and creativity. That maybe you will be inspired to enjoy, restore of even create your home. Our homes are an expression of our taste, our style, our values and our family. Creating a home that is beautiful and functional is a life long labor of love and we are happy to share some great ideas with you.
March also marks the one year anniversary of Temecula City Lifestyle. To everyone who has been part of our journey this past year—our readers, our partners, and our contributors—we extend our heartfelt thanks. As we step into year two, we are more committed than ever to uplifting and celebrating the stories that matter most.
With empathy and hope,

Be the host with the most this year with our top brunch tips!
ARTICLE BY MELISSA COLOMBO
Brunch isn't just a meal- it's meant to be an experience. If you want to upgrade your brunch, check out some of our simple but effective tips:
First and foremost is food! Create a balance of both sweet and savory options. Even better- focus on curating seasonal items. For example, avocado and strawberries are coming into season. Consider classic loaded avocado toast or a strawberry filled French toast plate.
Make your event stand out by giving it a theme. Popular themes this year include rustic farm-to-table, vintage tea or even a chic pajama brunch. The theme should be reflected in every aspect, from the invite to decorations and food.
A well stocked drink bar is key. Offer a signature cocktail with a fun name and garnish connected to the theme. If alcohol isn't your jam, switch things up with an iced coffee bar or offer a festive mocktail to ensure everyone is included.
Setting the environment is key. Having the perfect ambiance for your event helps your guests to feel relaxed. Lighting and music play the biggest role in this. Use instrumental versions of popular songs or a soft pop playlist to create an inviting atmosphere suitable for all ages.
Make your guests feel special by adding personalized touches to their favors. Sending guests home with something simple such as a homemade jam or even just a handwritten thank you note is a classy touch they won't soon forget.
TEMECULA TOUCH: Add a special Temecula flair by bringing some local favorites to the table.
Send guests home with a bottle from your favorite winery. Shop at the Old Town or Vail Headquarters Farmer's Market to add seasonal produce and locally sourced flowers for centerpieces.
Don compares it to a blind date—there’s nervousness, but also the excitement of the unknown.
Don Munoz’s love for sushi began not in a kitchen but around a New Year’s Eve dinner table in 2011, when his mom had a simple idea: "Why not teach the family to make sushi?" That moment sparked a passion that would shape his life. "At first, I didn’t get it, but I knew there was something special in how food brought us together," Don reflects. Today, Don is the proud owner and chef of KRFTD Sushi, where he has turned that family gathering into an art form. For Don, sushi is more than just a meal— it’s a chance to connect, create, and share stories. “I’ve always been an artist at heart,” he says, recalling his street art days. Sushi became the canvas where he could blend his creativity with culture. His mentor, Lucas, once told him, “Eat with your eyes first,” a lesson that now shapes Don’s approach to every dish.
Sushi didn’t immediately grab Don’s attention. At 14, he didn’t think much of it, but his father encouraged him to try again, sparking an interest. Over time, sushi became a way for him to express himself. His journey from a 14-year-old trying sushi to a chef creating innovative dishes included detours in graphic design and a brief exploration of firefighting.

What truly drives Don is the relationships he builds through food. Whether hosting private dinners or teaching sushi-making classes, Don treats every guest like family. “It’s not just about the food—it’s the experience and the memories we create together,” he says. His signature Don Roll, with yellowtail and jalapeños, is one example of how he brings people together through his craft.
Working in the Temecula area has inspired Don in many ways. The community’s diversity and openness to new experiences resonate with his desire to offer more than just sushi. Through KRFTD Sushi, Don shares his heritage as a Filipino chef, offering a fresh perspective on sushi. “Being Filipino in the sushi world—it’s rare, and that’s what makes it special. It inspires me to stand out, to do things differently,” he says.
Don’s connection with his clients is as personal as the sushi he creates. When clients book a private dinner, it’s not just about food; it’s about building a relationship. His wife, who handles the
bookings, arranges a call between Don and the client to learn their preferences, personalities, and vision for the meal. This connection allows Don to tailor each dish to their tastes, creating a sensory experience. Don compares it to a blind date—there’s nervousness, but also the excitement of the unknown.
“It’s exciting every time because I’m basing it on a conversation, a feeling, and their trust in me. It’s a chance to create something truly special for them.”
Don’s sushi classes stemmed from a simple thought—why not combine the fun of wine and paint nights with sushi and sake? "I envisioned a place where people could enjoy
themselves, learn something new, and create memories, even if their sushi came out a mess," he says. The success of these classes, where guests make three full rolls, including a tuna roll they sear themselves, has been a hit. "Everyone loves playing with fire," Don laughs, remembering how the simple act of torching the tuna becomes the highlight of the night.
For Don, sushi is the thread that ties his past, present, and future together. “It’s more than just a job; it’s a way to build something meaningful with my family,” he says, with his wife Maria and daughter Jazzlyn by his side, helping bring KRFTD Sushi to life.
The winding drive into Sedona, Arizona is a passage into a world of stunning contrasts. My introduction to this unique location was in 1990 on an advertising shoot. Being a mecca for automotive photography, I’ve been drawn back numerous times for projects with Audi, Toyota, and other brands. Sedona is a visual symphony that, in winter, transforms into something even more extraordinary. As Therese and I chased the sunset along State Route 179, my eyes darted between the road and the panorama unfolding before us. Each curve revealed a new masterpiece. Sculpted over millennia, the towering red cliffs wore a delicate dusting of snow—a fleeting adornment that turned the rugged land into a dreamscape.
The exchange between colors and textures in Sedona is a treat for anyone behind the camera. The deep, rusty reds of the sandstone, revealed by the low winter sun, contrasted sharply with the fresh snow. Against the crisp sky, details of the craggy cliff edges seemed to leap into focus. I pulled over too many times to catch the light accentuating the snowy caps of Cathedral Rock, Snoopy Rock, and Bell Rock. The light turned them into fiery monuments in the season’s chill.
Having mostly visited Sedona for projects in past years, I longed to explore the scenery on foot during our short weekend. My quest for the perfect muse led me to Subway Rock, a Sedona treasure for anyone seeking dramatic vistas. The trail was blanketed in snow, its pristine surface broken only by the tracks of previous hikers snow melting into red mud. The crunch of each step provided a rhythmic backdrop as we hiked, pausing frequently to frame the wonders around me before running to catch up with my eager trail partner.
Reaching Subway Rock, we were struck by its majestic beauty. The natural arch, carved by time and elements, must be experienced in person. Snow clung to its shady areas demanding secure footing on the inclines. Discovering a bigger crowd than expected, I waited to photograph the layered hues of ochre, crimson, and amber—all bathed in golden light. It was a perfect framing of the natural and the ethereal.
As dusk approached and the chill turned parts of the trail back into ice, we hurried into Sedona for a well-earned meal. Upon arrival, we realized our hiking expedition had left our clothes and boots encrusted with red earth. Eager for dinner, we savored a hot meal, treated ourselves to dessert, and braved the freezing temperatures back to our room.

The next morning, I explored the textures and charm of Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village—a destination just as captivating as the surrounding landscapes. With adobe walls, hand carved wooden gates, wrought-iron details, and colorful tile mosaics, the Old Mexicoinspired architecture stood in harmony with Sedona’s wild beauty. The ivydraped walls and soft lights strung across the cobblestone gave the scene a timeless glow, as though being transported to a foreign destination.
Each corner of Tlaquepaque presented a scene waiting to be captured. Bubbling fountains, intricate wooden doors, boutiques, and art galleries—paired with the interplay of light and shadow in the courtyards—created an atmosphere both intimate and grand.
Sedona in winter is a paradise, a dynamic fusion of rugged wilderness and refined human artistry. It’s a place where colors, textures, and light tell stories that go beyond what a single photograph can capture. In many ways, it feels supernatural—a place that invites its own spiritual interpretations. As we packed our gear and headed toward the cliff dwellings of Montezuma’s Castle, I realized that Sedona isn’t just a location - it’s a majestic vortex, just a road trip away.

Sharpen your Ax
Hello Temecula Readers,
This is your local Dream Vacations travel agent. No matter your age, spring break always sounds like a good idea -- because it is!
Who doesn’t want to have a spring pep back in their step? Who wouldn’t benefit from a nice break? But who has the time?
I heard a story recently about two men who chopped wood every day, both starting and ending exactly at the same time. The second man would take an hour in the middle of the day and would manage to produce more
wood than the first man. One day, the first man had asked the second man how he managed to cut more wood when they both started and ended at the same time and yet would take an hour-long break in the middle of every day. The second man replied, “I spend that hour sharpening my ax.”
I love this story because it reminds me that we all benefit when we take some mini breaks in between all of our life’s happenings and responsibilities. Life can feel like a never-ending to-do list, but when we pause to refresh, we set ourselves up for success.
Spring break isn’t just for college students flocking to Mexico for beachside activities. Instead, it’s a time of transition—a chance to shift from winter’s slower pace to a renewed and energized spring. Just like returning to the gym after a long break, it’s important to ease into new routines. Whether you’re 25 or 55, a spring break can prepare you for the next season, helping you sharpen your ax, so to speak.
Whether you plan an overnight trip to Disneyland, a weekend spa getaway, a seven-night cruise, or a few days hiking near a national forest, I encourage you to take time for yourself. Use this opportunity to recharge and prepare for the exciting adventures ahead.
Even the smallest getaway can make a big difference—a single day of rest can leave you recharged and ready to take on life’s opportunities.
Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. When you return from your spring break, you’ll be ready to embrace life’s adventures with a clear mind and renewed focus. Whether it’s a few days of fun in the sun or quiet moments of rest, this intentional break is an investment in yourself.
Don’t let spring break you, let spring make you.

HOW YOUNGREN CONSTRUCTION BUILT THE MODERN HILLTOP HOME.
The back-facing view of the Hunter residence.
“It didn’t need to be fancy. It’s not dripping with money."
Since eighth grade, Scott Youngren knew that he wanted to pursue construction. It was his passion; fit the lifestyle he wanted to create for himself. He recalls earning his contractor's license at an early age, and now, 33 years later, he cannot envision himself doing anything else. He was his own boss.
Youngren Construction, his family owned and operated company, was founded in 1992. They offer services that range from construction or renovation of residential and business spaces. It reflects the passion he holds for his work, and a new custom home has been added to their impressive portfolio.
The Hunter residence was designed by an outside architect. Youngren Construction stepped in as general contractor. The property owners are passionate about the outdoors, known to have an affinity for growing their own coffee plants, and gardening. That love was reflected in the house’s design. The living room features massive sliding doors, offering clear views of the surrounding land and immediate access to the patio and deck. It has a simple yet modern style, allowing those inside to always feel like they are one with nature and the beautiful surroundings.
Youngren confirmed that the property owner built the cabinets on his own. He used an exotic hardwood distinct to avocado trees, called avocado wood. Other impressive features of the property include its full solar ray with battery backup systems, pocket door sliders, and a highly efficient fireplace that’s capable of warming the entire house. A 7,000-square-foot detached shop sits beside the home, furnished with air conditioning and a heater. This ensures that the client can face the enduring weather and still work inside for hours at time. Youngren also mentioned the
impressive amount of steel beams and posts incorporated into the structure, which add both strength and visual appeal to the design.
The main challenge Youngren’s team overcame in building the house was meeting the code regulations and still maintaining the desired look. They selected alternate products made of cedar wood and devoted a great deal of attention toward the property’s fluctuating levels. The decks and external staircases meant elevation changes were present throughout the house, which demanded engineering. Measurements had to be precise, and everything needed to line up precisely. It was a labor of love, for all of those involved, ensuring each detail met the highest standards.
Considering their extensive history, and refinement of their craft, Youngren Construction has seen many ways of building certain products. They have done it all, constructing living rooms, kitchens, homes, and bathrooms. But in his eyes, it comes down to listening to the customer. What do they want, what are their needs and expectations, and where their budget can take them. He believes that through incorporating the important details that his team has learned over the years, and collaborating with the client, will result in functional and incredible designs.
Through their commitment to quality and service, Youngren Construction has become a trusted partner in the community. With a focus on elevating every project to the highest standard, they are known for delivering results that not only meet but exceed expectations. Whether working on a custom home or a business renovation, their attention to detail and dedication to craftsmanship are what set them apart.

It’s easy to live in, to maintain and to clean. “ ”
AMI Design & Associates' philosophies and creative process.
Annette Rogers, Certified Interior Designer and Certified Stager with AMI Design & Associates, shared that this ADU project was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how thoughtful design can maximize limited space without compromising comfort. Their client’s primary goal was to create a separate living space for her father, as he often travels between Taiwan and the United States.
The creative process began with understanding the client’s vision. Each factor, be it light patterns or zoning challenges, was considered during analyzation. After a clear understanding had
been reached, the company sketched a basic layout and focused on the refinement of each detail.
“We worked closely with architects, contractors, and even local suppliers to ensure that every detail was executed flawlessly. Open communication between everyone involved helped us to make smart decisions quickly, which ultimately contributed to the project’s smooth completion and success,” she said. They selected a monochromatic color palette for the unit, helping create a sense of openness. By placing each feature and using thoughtful design solutions, the space’s practicality was ensured. The client has been incredibly happy with the final result, as the unit exceeded their expectations.
One of the ADU’s standout features is a custom-built sauna, a personal yet important touch for a client that values health and relaxation. It also incorporated a custom Chinese-American karaoke sound system, one that blended modern and traditional audio technologies to create a high-quality
sound experience. Each of these features, as well as the unit's design, mirrored the client’s lifestyle.
It was a challenge to fit these design elements into a compact space, as the client also wished for a full kitchen with an island, a steam shower, and a bedroom that could accommodate a king-sized bed. To overcome this, the layout was optimized, and space-saving solutions like built-in storage were utilized. Each detail was strategically placed to ensure the space’s functionality and visual flow.
To improve the unit's energy efficiency and control of the natural light, power solar shades were installed. Meili appliances were selected for their high performance, and all custom cabinetry was crafted with advanced techniques, incorporating antimicrobial properties, self-healing surfaces, and fingerprint resistance.
AMI Design & Associates approach each project with functionality and beauty in mind. Their designs
are tailored to fit each client’s needs. Rogers herself draws inspiration from textures, colors, and interplay of light seen in nature. She expressed a love for weaving those elements into the spaces, and made mention of how her time traveling or visiting design markets has influenced her work.
According to her, flourishing within the industry involves continuous research, attendance of design exhibitions, and collaboration with innovative professionals who reveal the latest techniques. Today, the company is working with new technologies to enhance their creative process. Their work aims to inspire others to look at design not just as an aesthetic, but as a way to improve everyday life.
Mid-Century Elegance: Where History Meets Home
Erin Jensen, owner of The Treatment Skin Boutique, and her family have breathed new life into a historic 100-acre California estate once owned by the Sycamore Inn’s famed restaurateurs. Erin’s heartfelt promise of restoration won her the opportunity to purchase the home, which features two acres of avocado trees and a stunning natural view.
Pool builders, in exchange for land use, crafted a breathtaking pool, enhancing the elevated landscape. The home, designed by the original owner’s architect brother, boasts restored Joshua Tree bridges, two fire pits, and conversation areas that echo its mid-century charm.
With help from Rob Clark Construction and Davis Savage, Erin modernized key areas, blending functionality with the home’s “Mexico City treehouse” aesthetic. Hosting is a passion for Erin—her favorite memory is a housewarming party where guests danced and swam late into the night, celebrating the home’s legacy.

TIP #1 Freshen up the Kitchen
A fresh, clean kitchen impacts the entire home. To freshen up the sink, Kim says, “Run hot water while pouring in equal parts of baking soda and white vinegar through the disposal. Follow with a few drops of blue Dawn Dishwashing soap to cut away any grease buildup. Sharpen the disposal blades by running cooler water and ice through it. For a fresh smell, grind a few slices of lemon, lime or orange, removing any seeds first.”
To clean everything else in the kitchen, including counters and stainless-steel appliances, use a microfiber cloth and a solution of 2-3 drops of Dawn mixed with water.
The living room also deserves special attention. Kim says, “Start by pulling furniture away from the walls, vacuuming and dusting behind it. Make sure you dust air vents as well. Then, pull all of the furniture cushions off to vacuum underneath and in crevices. It’s always good to rotate and fluff cushions too.”
To banish dust from your furniture, Kim suggests using a good microfiber cloth that is slightly damp instead of furniture polish, which can leave a build-up on furniture that actually attracts dust.
Brighten up your whole home by intentionally focusing on the windows. “Homeowners often forget about the inside of the window,” says Kim. “They dust the blinds or the shutters, but when the blinds are pulled up, the windows often have dust or a film on them.” Kim suggests cleaning the inside of the windows on a cloudy day to reduce streaks. “A good glass cleaner with a microfiber cloth works really well. If you still have streaks, try using a little bit of rubbing alcohol.”
Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.
According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.
“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner. I also firmly believe that when

designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”
Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.
Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.
Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.
“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting
compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”
Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.
“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage. Automated drawers and pop-up outlets are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”
Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.
“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”
The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.
