MEET TOM CECI
MAYOR OF POTTSBORO

Many of you know Tom Ceci, recently appointed mayor to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Frank Budra. We recently sat down with Tom to learn more about him, his family, and the road he traveled to become mayor in one of the fast growing regions of North Texas.
As the saying goes, while not a native of Pottsboro, Tom got here as quickly as he could. What started as a family road trip to Texas in the summer of 1978, two weeks later turned into the purchase of 14 acres off Cemetery Road and a lifelong love of the community. In the fall of 1979, Tom enrolled at Pottsboro High School and while apprehensive about being new to the community, quickly realized how receptive and welcoming the folks here could be. As a freshman, he began volunteering at the Pottsboro Fire Department, jokingly because he got to wear a pager and get out of class when they needed help! He continued volunteering throughout high school and, upon graduation, chose to volunteer at the Preston Fire Department and become an EMT.
“Our community comes together and no matter who or what, we back our friends and neighbors.”
While learning the construction business from his stepfather, Lee, Tom also worked as an EMT for Preston Fire. When the department offered to send him to Paramedic School at Grayson College, it was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse. Shortly after graduating, he started his own construction company, Ceci Construction, and worked the next 32 years for the Sherman Fire Department. In 1998, Tom met his now business partner Scott Bates, and shortly thereafter, formed CeciBates Custom Homes which is still thriving today.
Tom met his current wife and best friend, Stacy, in 1979 and were friends throughout the years. They married in 2013 and between them, they have five daughters: Nichole, Abby, Tayler, Kendal, and Morgan who have given them six beautiful grandchildren, Weston, Sutton, Norah, Adam, Alina, and Marlowe. They built their forever home on Stacy’s family property in Pottsboro and intend on living there the rest of their lives.
What do you love most about the community?
One thing I love most about Pottsboro is the camaraderie among the people who live in our city. I remember playing sports and so many people would show up and cheer us on wherever we played, you know, like the saying “Last one out, turn out the lights!” I mean, what an inspiration and feeling of pride as the bus is pulling out of town and your neighbors, some you didn’t even know, standing in a line wishing you luck. It still gives me goosebumps! That tradition has never died to this day. Our community comes together and no matter who or what, we back our friends and neighbors.
What motivates you to give so much to the area?
Well, all my life I have volunteered in one thing or another. It’s hard to explain the feeling you receive when you do something good for someone else. In my personal experience as a First Responder, helping people through life threatening events made a more obvious difference to someone's family or property. That said, just living in a rural area where there is a lack of funding, being a good neighbor and pitching in is helping your community thrive.

How do you balance work, volunteerism, and family?
There is a fine line every day that you think about while wearing all these hats. Balancing the responsibilities of being a Mayor, business owner, and volunteer is challenging, but having a strong team and a supportive family makes all the difference. My wife Stacy, who also gives her time to our community, and our family provide unwavering support. Their backing allows me to dedicate my time and energy to serving our community.
Was there something specific that inspired you to the Mayor’s office?
First of all, I never thought I would be in a political position. One thing I have learned in life is that people inspire you to do things you never thought about doing. Pottsboro itself inspires me. I see a community of people who love this town and want to raise their families in a safe environment, work hard, and worship together. Unity is our commitment to each other and our children. There are so many leaders in our community, teachers, coaches, police officers, etc. that are all sources of inspiration for us all.
What is Pottsboro’s greatest asset?
There are so many things that make Pottsboro the greatest! One thing that really sticks out in my mind the most is our educational experience from kindergarten through High School. People come to our city just for this reason, and why not? We have such great staff, parents, and a community support that is second to none.
What is something you know about Pottsboro you wish everyone knew?
One thing I know is that no matter where you live in Pottsboro, inside or outside the city limits, we are “One Community” with the same desires in life, values for our family and commitment to our community. One thing I have learned as a First Responder is that God does not discriminate between race, beliefs, boundaries or age; we are all as one together.

EYECARE TEXOMA LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

Dr. Eric Newberry Has A Vision For His New Practice In The Texoma Community
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE ZAPATA
Last year, Downtown Denison welcomed a new addition to the eye care community. EyeCare Texoma, formerly Nietling Family Eyecare, was purchased by Dr. Eric Newberry from Dr. Dennis Nietling in March of 2024 and began seeing patients in June. Nietling Family Eyecare was one of the longest tenured

eye care practices in Texoma. Dr. Nietling had owned the practice since the early 1980’s when he took over for Dr. Levinson who had been practicing in the downtown Denison area since the early 1940’s.
Although new to Denison, the Newberrys are not new to North Texas. Jennifer was born in Sherman and grew up in Pottsboro. Dr. Newberry grew up and completed professional school in Oklahoma, but once married, they were excited to move back to the area and opened their first practice in McKinney in 2003. Jennifer’s background in Commercial Real Estate helped guide the opening of the McKinney practice. The growth in the McKinney area allowed Newberry Vision Center to become one of the largest, most successful practices in the North Texas Region.
As their practice continued to grow, Eric and Jennifer felt it important for their three sons to grow
up in a small town environment, similar to their own upbringing. In 2010, they moved their family to Melissa. While in Melissa, they often spent weekends and holidays on Lake Texoma and their boys fell in love with the lake life. In 2021, Eric and Jennifer decided to return home and moved their family to Pottsboro.
The Newberrys feel the timing of their move to Texoma to be perfect. As fate would have it, Dr. Nietling had begun to consider retirement at about the same time that Dr. Newberry began to consider opening another practice in the area. The appeal of being close to home, Main Street such a unique setting, and the growth of the area were all factors that made Denison the logical choice. It was important to both doctors that there would be a smooth transition for existing patients, many of whom had been in the practice for over four decades. After several

meetings, it was clear that Newberry’s passion for providing a great experience with quality eye care for the entire family was a perfect fit.
The Newberrys and EyeCare Texoma are excited not only to carry on the tradition of providing quality eye care to the area, but to becoming a community partner and discovering more opportunities to serve. Whether it be helping with local ISD events, participating in the local Chamber of Commerce, or participating with traditions like Monsters on Main and Santa’s mailbox, they are always looking for more ways to be involved. “I served on the Economic Development Corporation for the City of Melissa when I lived there and I really enjoyed that. It was a great feeling to know I was helping to develop the city. I would love to do something similar here". According to Dr. Newberry, “I love what I do for a living. My job is truly a blessing. But I feel like I can do even more.”
Opening a new practice is challenging, but transforming an existing practice can be even more difficult. Fortunately, Jennifer and Dr. Newberry had the experience and knowledge to offer a smooth transition to all existing patients, while offering state-of-the-art services and equipment to attract new patients. In addition to the normal challenges of opening a new location, renovating a building that is over a hundred years old presented many unique “opportunities.” With hard work and the experience that Jennifer had from her prior knowledge in opening their McKinney practice, the office has seen significant changes. They are excited to
“Even though we are in an established practice, we have the latest, stateof-the-art technology and equipment and can provide the most accurate diagnosis and prescriptions possible.”

grow the practice while providing a welcoming environment for unique and thorough eye care.
417 W Main Street, Denison EyeCareTexoma.com
Dr. Newberry received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Northeastern State University. He is residency trained in ocular disease and refractive surgery and is excited to bring his passion and vast experience to the Texoma area. “It is so important to build trust with patients, existing and new. I want to build a practice here that everyone talks about and wants to come to.” EyeCare Texoma has the latest, state-of-the-art technology and equipment and can provide the most accurate diagnosis
and prescriptions possible. Their staff members are caring, highly trained and knowledgeable. With his twenty-seven years of eye care experience and the benefits of a new facility, there is very little Dr. Newberry cannot handle on-site. “We can treat a wide variety of eye disorders. These include glaucoma, dry eyes, allergies, eye infections, cataracts, and macular degeneration. We strive to offer the best service. Our goal is to build long lasting relationships with our patients. There is a need for good primary eye care, and I believe EyeCare Texoma can provide that service.”

LIVING LIT
MICHELLE CASTLE PRESENTS LIVING LIT, YOUR PURPOSEFUL JOURNEY TO INTENTIONAL LIVING

Michelle Castle, a mortagage advisor at Guild Mortgage Company, Elevate Coach and entrepreneur, is always excited to talk about her new workbook Living Lit, Your Purposeful Journey to Intentional Living. When asked about Living Lit and what it means, Michelle was extremely passionate which is probably why it has become so popular. "Living Lit is living intentionally together." The book has already found a large following and has been the subject of local retreats. A recent retreat at Denison’s Hilltop Manor had people come in from all over the state to learn to put into practice what they were taught in the workbook.
When asked what were the reasons for writing the workbook, Castle said the idea came about in 2021. She stated, “I had gone through a period of my life where I had some success, but now I realized the kids were grown up and out of the house. What am I doing this for? My daughters said that I was so busy with my career that I didn’t get to experience some of the important times of their lives with them. And that hit me. I needed to learn how to evaluate life differently. And so I set off on this journey to write this workbook.”
According to Michelle, the workbook is very positive and transformative. “It’s a life book. Through the power of our thoughts, we can change our life habits and even disease. Positive mindsets can create your environment. The workbook teaches the importance of meditation and breathwork. It is so important to be grateful in all things. Teaching this has had a ripple effect on my family. It is interesting to see my daughters, Ashley and Alex, take this information in their way and time.”

Michelle Castle
When asked how her workbook affects her readers, she states, “You get to choose where you want to be in life no matter where you come from. Our message is very positive. Live your best life. Dream it. Believe it. Become it. It has been so fulfilling to see so many of our readers and attendees of our retreats connect. You get a connection with each other. Many lifetime relationships are being made.”
Michelle Castle states that this workbook is not about politics or religion and does not want to assign labels to it. “I was thinking about why I don’t like labels or titles. You start assigning meaning and it changes behavior or expectations based on each individual's interpretation of that label or title. That’s why I have a hard time labeling what Living Lit i s all about. If I were to say it is anything, it is a lifestyle choice. The point I want to be sure and make is that I believe that our thoughts create our reality. If you don’t like your

reality, change your thoughts. It sounds so simple but it is magically true. Living Lit and the retreats give you that pause moment where you can really reflect on the reality of the life you are living and it gives you a safe space to create the reality you want to experience. But it is not a book you just pick up and flip through, it is a transformational experience that requires your attention and focus.”
When asked where she sees the movement going, she states, "I don't know where it goes from here. I don't want this to be a selfish business. I really feel this has the opportunity for many people to improve their lives and connect on a deeper level. In the book, I teach people that in their busy lives, they can find their true passion and purpose." Michelle says that over eleven hundred members have joined the Living Lit Facebook group and she plans to hold a couple of additional retreats in the upcoming year. She is also planning a newsletter for readers to stay up to date with upcoming Living Lit events. Castle states that, "This is more than just a workbook; it's a journey. A journey to understand yourself better, to ignite your passions, and to live a life that's genuinely LIT.”

A HEART FOR Community
KAREN TOOLEY OF DOWNTOWN SHERMAN NOW
ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTNEY MITCHELL
Karen Tooley is a prominent figure in Sherman, Texas, known for her extensive contributions to the community through her leadership in Downtown Sherman NOW (DSN), a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 dedicated to revitalizing and promoting the historic downtown area. As the Executive Director, Karen has contributed to efforts to enhance the aesthetic appeal of downtown, created new programs to stimulate local businesses, and sponsored popular events showcasing the downtown area. She never dreamed that a member of the Sherman Fire Department would save her life on Christmas Day in 2023.
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women, causing one in three deaths each year. Unfortunately, most women don’t understand the magnitude of the threat heart disease poses. With no prior heart problems, Karen was enjoying the holiday with her husband, Hunt, when she went into cardiac arrest. Immediately, Hunt administered CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, while waiting for the emergency responders to arrive. The Sherman Fire Department arrived within minutes, a key to Karen’s survival. “The firefighters did something they had never done before in an ambulance,” recalls Karen. “Their bravery and courage to do that procedure, with God’s help, saved me,” she continued.
The Sherman community reacted immediately asking for prayers and support via social media and throughout the town. “People I do not even know tell me they prayed for me. I am just so grateful to our community, the prayer warriors, and the Sherman Fire Department, our heroes,” Karen emotionally states. While at the hospital, the prognosis was not originally good with the doctors anticipating brain damage, if she survived at all. Miraculously, she did and after a long recovery, Karen is doing well. She believes the CPR training she and Hunt completed six months earlier and, of course, Hunt’s quick action spared Karen’s life. The city awarded the firefighters with a medal for their actions which Karen proudly presented to each of them.
Despite the setbacks brought on by her experience, Karen’s commitment to the community and downtown Sherman has never been stronger. When not working on hosting events that bring people to the local businesses or promoting and supporting members actively on social media, she’s busy
KAREN Tooley
LEADERSHIP IN DOWNTOWN SHERMAN NOW (DSN)

mentoring and advocating for emerging leaders in the community. She is always sharing her knowledge and experience to inspire others to take an active role in local development. Her passion for downtown is contagious. And while DSN’s focus is specifically downtown Sherman, any business in the Sherman or the Texoma Region can be members, something Karen highly encourages. “I love dealing with these business owners. They are real mavericks investing in the community like they have. They are brave, clever, and enthusiastic,” she maintains.
One of the many events keeping Karen busy is the annual Stroll on the Square. Patrons may enjoy top wines, food samples from restaurants, music, and shopping. This fall will be the thirteenth year for the event. If you like food trucks, mark your calendar for the May 3rd Sherman Showdown, a food truck competition. Besides enjoying delicious cuisine, the celebration will include activities for children, music, and shopping.
Karen also created “Coffee with the Mayor” over ten years ago. The meeting is held monthly on the first Friday at a Downtown Sherman NOW member’s location. It is a great networking opportunity plus you get
to hear from Sherman’s Mayor, a notable guest speaker, and learn about a local business and non-profits. The casual get-together is open to the public and more information is available on the organization’s website.
It’s the small, fun gatherings like “Coffee with the Mayor” that Karen loves most about Downtown Sherman NOW and the Sherman Community. “I love that it still has a small-town feel. I know it is growing, but you still can go somewhere and know someone. We take care of each other,” she says. Perhaps Karen knows that better than anyone as so many people took care of her when she needed it the most. “I wake up every day and can’t believe I am still here,” she fondly says. “God gave me a second chance. I am trying to return that service with my involvement at Downtown Sherman NOW, helping to improve the community.”
February is American Heart Month and is a good time to learn CPR, something Karen urges everyone to do. This knowledge is a small way to impact someone’s life, just like it did for Karen Tooley. To learn more about Downtown Sherman NOW, visit DowntownShermanNow.com or call (903) 816-2811.
