April Showers us with Arts, Health, Mentorship and more.
April is here! Mother Nature is weaving bits of her magic all around The Woodlands with the warmer weather, lovely wildflowers blowing on the side of the roads and colorful scapes of Bluebonnets stretching along the medians and in the fields.
April is also Birthday month in my house, for me, my daughter and my son! The running joke is that by Mother's Day, the beginning of May, my husband is tapped out from all the creative birthday gift ideas and festivities!
This is our "Investment" issue and we don't only mean financial investments. We curated stories that include investing in our health, our youth, our community, the arts, quality fashion pieces and more.
I interviewed Dan Buettner, a pioneer in longevity research, best-selling author, and co-producer of the 3-time Emmy Award-winning documentary mini-series “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones.” Though we may not live in one of the Blue Zones geographically, we can build our environments, wherever we live, to support a healthier lifestyle.
The long awaited Capital Grille opened in March and we talked with managing partner Steve Joest and Executive Chef Ricardo Vargas about the unique culinary experience visitors can expect and their level of commitment to the community. Welcome to The Woodlands!
April showers us with arts. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival celebrates its twenty year anniversary with over 200 artists' tents and the works of featured artist Thomas Wargin.
And with April, comes the bittersweet anticipation of May and Graduation for all our high school seniors, my daughter included. I have decided to invest my time into her for the last couple of months of her school career. Though I will stay part of The Woodlands City Lifestyle team, we will be welcoming a new Managing Editor aboard. I have enjoyed my 32 issues with you and wish you all the best for the rest of 2025.
Cheers!

REJOICE IN THE BEAUTY OF EASTER
Just as spring brings blossoms after the chill of winter, the resurrection of Jesus brings joy after sorrow and a hope that never fades.
Easter is a beautiful reminder of new life, fresh beginnings and the enduring hope that carries us through life’s hardest seasons. From the pain of the crown of thorns comes the promise of rebirth. Through the darkness of the cross shines the light of the resurrection, a reminder that sorrow is never the final word.
This Easter, join us at The Woodlands Methodist Church as we celebrate the love that transforms, the hope that renews, and the life that blooms through Jesus. Together, we’ll rejoice in the risen Christ, lifting our hearts in worship and gratitude for the life and light He brings.

The Woodlands Newest Steakhouse
The Woodlands, Texas, just expanded its culinary landscape with the recent grand opening of The Capital Grille on March 9th, 2025. This esteemed fine-dining establishment is poised to become a cornerstone of the community, offering not only exceptional cuisine but also a steadfast commitment to local engagement and investment.
Managing Partner Steve Joest expressed enthusiasm about integrating into The Woodlands community. "We’re excited to join The Woodlands community and look forward to building strong relationships," he stated. Demonstrating this commitment, The Capital Grille is making a $10,000 donation to a local charity. "We are carefully considering a number of local organizations that align with our values and have a meaningful impact on the people of The Woodlands," Joest added. This initiative reflects the restaurant's philosophy of investing in the communities where they operate.
The Woodlands location distinguishes itself by blending The Capital Grille's signature style with elements that reflect the area's unique charm. Guests are greeted by the iconic chrome lions,
Porcini Rubbed Bone-In Ribeye With Aged 15 Year Balsamic
and an impressive wall of clocks displays times from financial capitals around the world. The interior also features a range of art celebrating Texas icons.
Culinary excellence is at the heart of The Capital Grille experience. Executive Chef Ricardo Vargas emphasizes the meticulous attention to detail in every dish. "Our culinary philosophy revolves around using only the finest ingredients," he explained. The restaurant is renowned for its expertly prepared steaks, hand-carved by their master butcher and dry-aged in-house for 18 to 24 days, enhancing tenderness and flavor.
Beyond the popular and classic steak offerings, The Capital Grille provides a diverse menu catering to a variety of tastes. Guests can enjoy seafood specialties such as Pan-Seared Sea Bass with Miso Butter and Citrus Glazed Salmon or the indulgent Sliced Filet Mignon with Cipollini Onions and Wild Mushrooms. The restaurant also offers a range of fresh salads and flavorful side dishes, including the guest-favorite Sam’s Mashed Potatoes and Roasted Wild Mushrooms. Each plate is crafted with precision and passion, ensuring a memorable dining experience.
Wine enthusiasts will find much to admire in the extensive selection available at The Woodlands location. The restaurant boasts a Wine Spectatorrecognized list of over 200 selections, housed in a floor-to-ceiling, temperature-controlled wine cellar that holds more than 3,000 bottles. Guests can enjoy wines by the glass, including rare vintages, with servers providing personalized pairing recommendations. For those seeking an exclusive experience, wine lockers are available for lease, offering access to rare wines and special events. Each server undergoes extensive training to assist guests in selecting the perfect wine to complement their meal, elevating the dining experience to new heights.
The Capital Grille also caters to private dining needs, offering four distinct spaces that can

In addition to its immediate community efforts, The Capital Grille's parent company, Darden Restaurants, has a longstanding tradition of giving back. This commitment to social responsibility underscores the company's dedication to making a positive impact both locally and nationally.
For those who appreciate a fine dining experience marked by superior service, expertly crafted dishes, and an atmosphere that exudes sophistication, The Capital Grille in The Woodlands is poised to become a staple “must-visit”. With its reputation for excellence already well-established in other locations across the country, this newest addition is sure to exceed expectations and become a beloved culinary institution in The Woodlands for years to come.
MENTORSHIP: AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE
At Executive Women’s Alliance, Students Take Ownership of Their Success
We are pleased to showcase the Executive Women’s Alliance (EWA), a not-for-profit organization in Montgomery County that is making a profound impact on the lives of young women. EWA is a dynamic network of professional, managerial, and executive women dedicated to mentoring and empowering the next generation.
In 2007, EWA launched the Women of Vision (WOV) Mentoring Program at Conroe High School. EWA
Director of Communications Ryan Mathes shared that the initiative expanded to Oak Ridge High School in 2024, now serving approximately 65 students in grades 10 through 12. Participants commit to monthly meetings, engaging in carefully curated activities and community service projects. These sessions expose students to diverse post-high school educational and career paths, equipping them with the tools to navigate their futures with confidence.

Upon completion of the program, graduates have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to further their education.
The program’s focus is to enhance the self-esteem and self-image of female high school students through presentations, personal development, and leadership lessons. Students are introduced to a wide range of educational and
career opportunities, while learning to take ownership of their success. From confidence-boosting mock interviews to fashion shows highlighting professional attire, young ladies in EWA’s programs gain the skills to shine in the spotlight. Its goal is to educate female high school students by providing strong role models, promoting wise decision-making, and empowering them to achieve their goals.
EWA’s mission and vision encapsulate its dedication to shaping the leaders of tomorrow:
“We inspire the next generation by mentoring young women, encouraging their entry into the workforce, and providing scholarships to support their education. . . . We envision a future where young women are empowered with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to excel in their chosen fields. . . .”
The importance of mentorship cannot be overstated. It is a catalyst for personal growth, professional development, and long-term success. Here’s why investing in mentorship transforms lives:
• Confidence and Self-Esteem: Mentors help young women recognize their strengths and cultivate the confidence needed to pursue their aspirations.
• Exposure to Success: Learning from accomplished professionals provides real-life examples of achievement, inspiring mentees to set ambitious goals.
• Expanding Opportunities: Mentors introduce young women to invaluable connections, opening doors to internships, scholarships, and career growth.
• Building Leadership and Resilience: Through mentorship, young women enhance their emotional intelligence, leadership skills, and perseverance — essential traits for navigating life’s challenges. Ryan Mathes emphasized the valuable exposure mentees receive through career panel discussions: “Women of Vision mentees gain insights from career panelists during sessions. Mentors share

their experiences and answer questions from the young women, representing a wide range of professions — from hair salon owners to finance experts to physicians — all detailing their journeys into their fields.”
Mentor Natalie Saikowski Goertz shared a heartwarming story that underscores the lasting impact of mentorship. Over a decade ago, Natalie began mentoring a Conroe High School student, whom we’ll call Bethany. Their connection grew beyond the program, and once Bethany graduated WOV, Natalie and her husband welcomed Bethany into their lives. Today, Bethany is a proud University of North Texas graduate, a dedicated social worker assisting special needs students, and is now applying for a master’s program.
Natalie continues to support Bethany by connecting her with seasoned social workers to help her advance her career. In a full-circle moment, Bethany returned as an inspiring speaker for current EWA members, sharing her journey and wisdom. As she embarks on her master’s program, Natalie will assist her in applying for EWA scholarships, reinforcing the enduring value of mentorship.
Mentorship empowers young women, creating a future where they can thrive and uplift those around them. We commend the outstanding work of EWA and encourage you to learn more about their mission at ExecutiveWomensAlliance.org.

Every spring, the Woodlands buzzes with anticipation for The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival. This year is especially exciting as they celebrate their 20th anniversary. Lined up along the waterway in an outdoor gallery, visitors can explore roughly 200 artists’ tents and experience the incredible variety of art offered by artists all over. Ranked sixth in the nation for ticket sales, The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival features artists from Canada, Mexico, and Israel. In addition to world-class visual art, the festival boasts a vibrant lineup of performances, with over 400 entertainers presenting their own artistic expressions through music, dance, and more. Spanning 2.5 days, over 20,000 people filter in and out of the 5 various ticket booths to immerse themselves in this cultural experience. Executive Director, Jenny Carattini-Wright, describes it as “one of the best events to bring The Woodlands together”.
The festival is a true community effort, engaging approximately 35 core volunteers and between 600 to 1,000 additional volunteers from local law enforcement, homeland security, the hospital district, and the sheriff’s office. Organizations such as The Woodlands Township and Visit The Woodlands collaborate to create an event that not only enriches the community but also invests in the next generation of artists. With a mission “to create
a strong and vital arts presence in the area,” The Woodlands Arts Council operates as a nonprofit, ensuring that all festival proceeds directly benefit the community.
A key focus is supporting aspiring artists in Montgomery County through a variety of microgrants such as The Dr. David Gottlieb Education Microgrant and the Artist Microgrant. Both of these grants provide students with the financial resources needed to complete their projects and further their growth in the artistic community. Another noteworthy microgrant is The Performing Arts Microgrant which has partnered with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. As of the last couple of years, their partnership has allowed The Woodlands Arts Council to provide an upwards of $80,000 for students to further pursue their dreams within

the performing arts. In celebration of the art council’s 20th year, they wanted to do something particularly special and, as a collective board, decided to create the 20 Years of Making Art Matter Scholarship of $20,000, which is awarded to one deserving student. That student will not only be awarded the prestigious scholarship, but they will have their art displayed in The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival for everyone to enjoy!
Beyond the festival, you might have also noticed the various artistic pieces throughout the Woodlands such as “Proud Souls”, the bench with wings by the library, and “Sound of Healing”, the wind chimes in Hughes Landing. These pieces are a part of the Public Art display which provides art and beauty to the community year-round. Another truly impactful program created by The Woodlands Arts Council is the Young Makers Market which was a brand new feature as of last year, and was a smashing success! This program features artwork from students ages 8 - 18 in a one-day art festival in Market Street. Roughly 40 students participate in workshops to prepare for this day of selling their art. Students are taught how to communicate their artwork as well as the inspiration behind it. They also gain hands-on experience
with logistical aspects like the loading in and out of their pieces, marketing their art, and setting prices. This program not only provides invaluable experience, but it also fosters a vibrant atmosphere where people from all over the city can come and support emerging artists as they take their first steps into the art world. Because of the community’s involvement in this festival, The Woodlands Arts Council has been able to raise over $1.4 million in their 20 years of hosting and have helped hundreds
of students achieve their dream of becoming professional artists.
Each year, approximately 40% of the festival’s artists are brand new to the festival, ensuring a fresh and dynamic experience for returning visitors. Whether you’re a longtime attendee or a first-time visitor, make sure to mark your calendar for this year’s event! Join us for The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival from Friday, April 11th to Sunday April 13th. Tickets on Friday are $15 for general admission and $18 on Saturday and Sunday. You won’t want to miss this magical weekend celebrating creativity, culture, and community!

QUALITY over quantity
Classic pieces, backbone of a wellcurated Spring capsule wardrobe— versatile, stylish, and effortlessly chic.
INVESTING IN FASHION THAT TRANSCENDS THE TRENDS
ARTICLE BY JAMIE SPIKERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEX WOOD AND PROVIDED
In a world where fast fashion dominates, investing in quality pieces is more than just a style choice - it’s a commitment to sustainability, longevity, and timeless elegance. Investing in a wardrobe of well-made, ethically sourced garments not only benefits the planet but also proves to be a smarter financial decision in the long run. From reducing waste and supporting fair labor practices to achieving a refined, enduring personal style, choosing quality over quantity transforms fashion into a meaningful investment. Investing in a wardrobe that lasts in both wear and impact is ‘on trend’ in 2025.
According to industry research, items like a well-tailored blazer, premium denim, a structured handbag, a classic trench coat, and leather boots remain wardrobe staples year after year. The reason? High-quality fabrics and expert craftsmanship ensure durability, while classic silhouettes maintain their appeal across decades. Unlike their fast fashion counterparts, which often show signs of wear after just a few washes, investment pieces are designed to withstand time, offering better value per wear. Additionally, brands known for quality production often adhere to ethical sourcing and fair labor practices, making them a more responsible choice.
Monkee’s of The Woodlands opened this past September in The Lake Woodlands Crossing Shopping Center and immediately set forth on the company mission of “providing an intimate shopping experience that helps a friend walk out feeling beautiful and looking her best.” Owner Kristin Durski offered a list of her recommendations for a capsule wardrobe that stands the test of time as we head into spring:
• A well-tailored blazer
• Classic white button-down shirt
• Quality denim
• Timeless handbag
• Neutral knitwear
• Well-fitted trousers
• A good pair of sneakers. (Sneakers and dresses have really become a thing!)
• Jewelry that pops with color (for your spring whites and light looks)!
A

While social media and runways constantly push the latest trends, the reality is that most trendy pieces are fleeting. What’s hot today may feel outdated in a matter of months, leaving consumers with a closet full of barely worn items. The appeal of trendy fashion is undeniable—it’s fun, fresh, and makes a statement. However, many of these garments are impractical for everyday wear or difficult to style beyond a single season.
Instead, curating a wardrobe based on classic, versatile pieces ensures that every item gets consistent wear and provides lasting value.
Kristin shared her thoughts on trends, “Fashion should be fun, but trendy doesn’t always mean wearable. Stick to what flatters you, invest in timeless pieces, and dabble in trendy pieces.”
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
Committing to quality over quantity isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about shifting our mindset on consumption. The rise of fast fashion has led to excessive waste, with millions of garments ending up in landfills each year. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is wasted every second. By investing in fewer, better-quality pieces, consumers can significantly reduce their environmental footprint. Beyond sustainability, there’s a psychological benefit to choosing quality. A well-made garment exudes confidence, fits better, and withstands the test of time. When you invest in high-quality
A Dolce Cabo striped dress is the definition of effortless chic—just throw it on, and you’re instantly put together.
staples, you eliminate the cycle of constantly replacing cheap, worn-out clothing. Instead of feeling pressured to keep up with fast fashion trends, you build a wardrobe that aligns with your personal style and enhances your everyday life.
The financial benefits of investing in quality fashion are undeniable. While high-end pieces may come with a steeper upfront cost, their longevity makes them more cost-effective in the long run. Take, for instance, a $50 fast fashion blazer that lasts only a year versus a $500 designer blazer that remains in pristine condition for over a decade. The cost per wear of the designer piece is significantly lower, making it a smarter investment.
Additionally, well-made garments often retain resale value. Luxury brands with strong reputations can even appreciate in worth, making them viable assets. The secondhand market has grown tremendously, proving that quality fashion holds value long after its initial purchase.
Investing in quality pieces is about more than just fashion—it’s about making conscious choices that benefit your style, your wallet, and the planet. By investing in a wardrobe of durable, timeless essentials, you step away from the wasteful cycle of fast fashion and embrace a smarter, more sustainable way of dressing. The rewards are clear: better craftsmanship, financial savings, a refined personal style, and a positive impact on the environment. When it comes to fashion, quality will always outshine quantity.

Thomas Wargin at the festival
THE WOODLANDS WATERWAY ARTS FESTIVAL’S FEATURED ARTIST
Artist Thomas Wargin
From a young age, Thomas was a highly creative child. Growing up in the foster care system with little to play with, he used his imagination to transform discarded goods into unique playthings. In third grade, he received his first award by creating a race car as a drawing out of discarded paper scraps. “That early gesture of gratitude for my creativity set my path for the future.”
His pieces are often inspired by childhood tales and subconscious exploration through the comic book world. No matter where he was, if he had a pencil and something to draw on, then the possibilities were endless!
Although his passion was art, Thomas initially pursued a more stable path in mechanical engineering. Then, in his third year as an engineering student, a required art class reignited his passion, leading him to switch
majors. He returned back to school on a full scholarship, studying design and fine art.
Thomas’s first major sculpture was called “Leap of Faith” which was about letting go of the corporate office and exploring life as a full-time artist. Finally, in 2006, Thomas became a full-time artist, creating the magnificent pieces you’ll be seeing soon!
Currently, Thomas is working on two large series pieces called Cycle and YOGA. Cycle embodies symbolic pieces of man and machine while YOGA focuses on the poses and inner embodiment needed to activate those poses. Thomas will be displaying not only items from his YOGA series, but he’s also bringing back older works that followers in The Woodlands will absolutely love. Come check out Thomas Wargin, The Woodlands’s Featured Artist!

ESTATE PLANNING
PROTECTING GENERATIONAL WEALTH
Throughout my career, I have helped hundreds of wealthy families navigate the estate planning process. Now, my focus is on estate conservation for high-net-worth individuals, as I have identified a key strategy that can preserve hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars for those wishing to pass their wealth to their spouse and descendants.
Starting January 1, 2026, the federal estate tax exemption reverts to around $7 million per per-
at $19,000 per donee per year. Another solution is an insurance trust (with the family as beneficiaries) not taxed in the estate, to fund estate tax liabilities. However, purchasing large life insurance policies later in life can be prohibitively expensive. In addition, after the lifetime gifting exemptions are used up, the annual premiums themselves may create additional gift tax burdens.
“I HAVE IDENTIFIED A KEY STRATEGY THAT CAN PRESERVE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS”
son. Therefore, if one is married with $20 million or more in estate assets, or single with $10 million or more, estate taxes could take a significant toll.
For example, if a single person has a $20 million estate, the taxable portion after the exemption would be $13 million, resulting in an estate tax bill of approximately $5.2 million, due 9 months after death. While there is an option to use an alternate appraisal of the assets six months postmortem if it results in a lower tax burden, most estates do not have $5.2 million in liquid assets readily available. Even if they do, most would prefer to pass that wealth along to their heirs rather than the IRS. This issue is even much more important when a family’s wealth is tied up in a family business, private stock, real estate, farms, ranches, minerals, royalties, residences, etc. And a forced sale of $5.2 million of assets by an independent executor of your estate will significantly diminish the estate’s value.
TRADITIONAL SOLUTIONS AND THEIR DRAWBACKS
One common approach to mitigating estate taxes includes lifetime gifts, currently capped
A MORE EFFECTIVE APPROACH
There is a solution to this problem that allows individuals to secure substantial life insurance coverage – potentially 3 to 5 times more than traditional methods – without personally paying the premiums.
I have helped structure life insurance policies ranging from $9 million to $50 million, implementing strategies that preserve wealth while minimizing out-of-pocket costs.

The Blue Zone Blueprint
The real secrets to a longer life
In certain regions of the world, people are living exceptionally long and productive lives. Many are seeing birthdays well past age 80, some even to 100 years and older. Known as “blue zones,” a name derived by scientists during the original surveys who used a blue pen to mark villages with long-lived populations, these areas are spread throughout the world but have a defined list of commonalities. What the residents of Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and other cities already know can be effectively applied in our own neighborhoods for similar results.
Dan Buettner, a pioneer in longevity research, best-selling author, and co-producer of the 3-time Emmy Award-winning documentary mini-series “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones,” shared some of the secrets he’s uncovered in these blue zones. “The people in blue zones don’t try to live long, healthy lives – it happens naturally because their environment supports it,” he said. “After decades of research, we identified nine common denominators, which we call the ‘Power 9.’”
According to Buettner, it’s important to move naturally. Trade the gym and workouts for simply getting off the couch and away from the desk to walk, to garden and move. But also, have regular rituals to destress, like

napping, prayer, or socializing. He points out that it’s important to have purpose, a reason to wake up each day and get out of bed. Just this can potentially add years of life expectancy.
“Chronic stress shortens life expectancy, so blue zone communities incorporate downshifting rituals – whether it’s an afternoon nap in Ikaria, a tea ceremony in Okinawa, or a happy hour in Sardinia. These routines help lower cortisol levels and keep people mentally and physically healthier over time,” he said. “The longevity advantage comes from social cohesion, daily movement, and a sense of purpose.”
Buettner recommends shifting to a plant-slant diet, saying, “People in blue zones consume adequate protein, but it comes from plants, not processed protein powders or excessive animal products. Beans, lentils, nuts and whole grains provide all the protein needed for muscle maintenance.” Additionally, avoid overeating by using the 80% Rule of stopping when you’re 80% full. Adding in

Buettner emphasizes that, “The fact that people are turning to medication to manage obesity and diabetes is a sign that our environment is working against us. Instead of relying on medication as a solution, we need to re-engineer our environments. If we made cities more walkable, schools healthier, and food policies more supportive of whole, plant-based eating, we could prevent chronic disease in the first place.”
Another important key to a long and happy life is the people around you. It’s important to belong to a faith-based or spiritual community, like a church or prayer group. Putting family first and prioritizing the close relationships with people you love
will keep your heart stronger longer. Of course, choosing the right tribe and surrounding yourself with others who pursue and support healthy behaviors is the joy for the journey.
“Longevity isn’t about where you live geographically. It’s about where you live physically. Your immediate environment – your home, your neighborhood, your workplace – shapes your health far more than your country or state does,” Buettner said.
Because willpower alone isn’t enough to form healthier habits, he recommends communities do more to encourage walkability, social connections and home-cooked meals. Children can walk to school; families can shop at local markets and share meals together and with friends; social connections are promoted. These small, daily choices accumulate into a healthier, longer life.
In blue zones, people live in an environment that naturally encourages movement, healthy eating, and social connections. They walk to see friends, grow their own food, and have built-in daily routines that reduce stress. Buettner points out that, in contrast, many modern societies are surrounded by processed food, sedentary work and social isolation, which leads to short, less healthy lives.

Utilizing all that he’s learned working with blue zone areas, Buettner focuses on creating healthy communities across the United States through his Blue Zones Projects. Their first efforts in transforming Albert Lea, Minnesota, was so successful in reducing obesity, smoking and chronic disease rates, it created a blueprint to expand to other cities, including Fort Worth, Texas. His book, “The Blue Zones Challenge: A 30-Day Plan for a Longer, Better Life,” is a roadmap for making small and lasting changes on a personal level.
“The key to longevity isn’t moving to a blue zone,” Buettner said. “Blue zones aren’t about discipline or dieting. They’re about designing an environment where the healthy choice is the easy choice. If we want people to live better and longer, we need to change the world around them, not just tell them to change themselves.”
