Saint Simeon’s Resident Pat with daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Michael
I am a Tulsa native, but the city is growing quickly. Services I need are moving south, where traffic is thick and fast. At Saint Simeon’s, I enjoy a stress-free life – time in the gardens, watching wildlife, and admiring beautiful flowers. I also love the regular chapel services and my favorite spot on campus – the warm-water therapy pool. Thanks to Saint Simeon’s, my family and I have gained something priceless – peace of mind. Sincerely, Pat

Editor’s Letter
A Love of All Things Home & Garden
A
s I take on this exciting new venture as editor of Tulsa Lifestyle, I think of what a fitting issue this is for me to begin. My passion for homes and interior design began at a young age as the daughter of a home builder and the granddaughter of an interior designer. I’ve also always had an enchantment with nature and outdoors, and our family is comprised of many avid gardeners and bird watchers. The great importance of a comfortable and pleasing home to enjoy with loved ones was impressed upon me as far back as I can remember, as well as an appreciation of all nature and the outdoors has to admire. Many wonderful things in life are centered around the home, so it comes as no surprise to me that beautiful surroundings indoors as well as outdoors are known to enhance energy, creativity, serenity and quality of life. In this issue we have the great pleasure of highlighting some amazing indoor and outdoor spaces right here in our community, and show the work of those who helped to make these spaces what they are. Interior designer Lynn Knight-Jessee, owner of Kitchen Concepts, shows us a great example of making the most of a small space with an inspiring makeover of a client’s kitchen, guest bath and living room. An interview with landscape designer, Kelley Moritz, owner of Kelley Designs, Inc., shares details about her personal gardens and the importance she places on outdoor living to create precious family time together. We also get an inside look at the inner workings of a husband and wife team who own and operate restaurants Elote Café and The Vault in downtown Tulsa. The proprietors, Jeramy and Libby Auld, discuss their dedication of cooking healthy recipes for customers with organic products and sustainable methods as well as their many ways they give back to the community. We hope that readers will find as much inspiration from this issue as we have while putting it together. I know I’m ready to enjoy this glorious time of year to the fullest with family and friends in the comfort of our homes and backyards. Enjoy!

COSTCO COMING TO TULSA Tulsa will be getting the first Costco to be built in Oklahoma. The wholesale warehouse club will be located at 103rd and Memorial. Costco made national news recently when President Obama commended the company for paying $21 an hour and offering benefits to part-time employees. Now they’re making roots in Tulsa, and they plan to hire 200 Tulsans. Costco is choosing Tulsa for its first Oklahoma store. Tulsa City Councilor Phil Lakin says the area where the store will be located - 103rd and Memorial - is booming. McArthur 10 Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2014
says Costco sells high-quality products and is the world’s largest purveyor of fine wines. But in Oklahoma, Costco can’t sell wine. He says the company won’t pressure lawmakers to change those state laws. “This development should add to Tulsa’s tax base and continue our mission of bringing jobs and opportunities to Tulsans,” says Mayor Dewey Bartlett, calling it a “homerun” for the city.

FOR THE DAY
10 activities to make dad feel special
ARTICLE LYSA CHRISTOPHER
F
ather’s Day gives dads the opportunity to step outside the norm. It’s the one time of year they can relinquish responsibility and truly relax. If you want to give dad the royal treatment this year, without falling into the same shirt-and-tie rut, try one of these 10 clever ideas to create a fun and memorable Father’s Day. BROADCAST YOUR LOVE
Does dad need an extra pat on the back? Create a special family iMovie or slideshow to surprise him. If you have young children, let them dress up, sing and dance to broadcast their love for him. If you have tweens or teens, come up with a clever family music video or put cherished family pictures into a slide show with his favorite music. Have fun, be creative and broadcast your love for dear ol’ dad.
cert. If dad wants to relax, maybe a few precious hours alone will rejuvenate his spirit. Think about dad and plan accordingly. MAKE IT SWEET
Who says candy is just for Valentine’s Day? If dad has a wicked sweet tooth, ditch the diet and indulge his vice. There are several charming candy shops around Tulsa such as Candy Castle downtown at 5th & Boston or Russell Stover in Utica Square. Antoinette Bakery on Brookside has decadent pies that can be bought in very generous by-the-slice portions or whole. If dad is into baseball, find baseball-themed candy like Big League Chew, baseball-shaped lollipops and more. Don’t stop there, place his favorite candy in a basket with a ticket to a sporting event or movie. MAKE DAD A STAR
If dad has everything, think about registering a star in his name. At Star-Registration.com, you can name a standard, constellation or binary star after dad. Your unique gift comes with a guarantee and a certificate that includes coordinates, so he can easily find his star.
WHAT DAD LOVES
Instead of gifts, take dad to do something he really loves. If he likes fishing, plan a full-day or half-day fishing trip. If he’s into music, take him to a con12 Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2014
ALWAYS REMEMBER
If dad is no longer living, find a way to pay homage to him each year. Take a walk at River Parks, go on a hike at Turkey Mountain, plant a tree in his honor or simply be alone with your thoughts. No
matter how you choose to pay your respects, always take time to remember your father. TAKE A STEP FORWARD
Let’s face it, the family nucleus is ever changing. If you have a stepfather or a relationship with a man who’s like a father, be sure to remember him, too. Any small gesture is good. Bake his favorite cookies, purchase or make a card or simply let him know how important he is in your life. It’s not the size of the gift but the thought that truly matters.
SAY IT WITH PICTURES
The ideal gift, from kids of any age, is to create a photobook. Pops will love seeing his family as they grew up through the years, and sometimes pictures are worth a thousand words. If you’re not able to spend time with your dad due to distance, a photobook is a wonderful way to share cherished memories and bring you closer together. MUSICAL TRIBUTE
There is no better gift than music. Take dad to see a free concert in the park or buy tickets to see his favorite band from college (they all seem to be touring these days). Just make sure he doesn’t try to squeeze into his beloved pants from the ‘80s. SHARE HIS HOBBY
DO WHATEVER DAY
Does your dad have a hobby? If dad is a photography buff, find something that will allow him to grow and learn more about his favorite hobby. If he loves golf, a few lessons never hurt. Whatever his passion, you can transform it into a unique Father’s Day gift that is sure to make him happy. All it takes is a little imagination and creativity.
As much as dad loves his family, sometimes the greatest gift is time alone. Allow dad to have an entire day to himself. Maybe he’ll go to a movie (without singing animals and dancing snowmen), watch a game with his friends or go for a long run along the river. Whatever he decides, one thing is for certain. For a busy father, alone time is the best time of all.

ou are beautiful. This is something Kaye Sanders, owner of Enhance Skin and Body Medical Spa, knows and believes. Having been a nurse for 34 years, Sanders has had the opportunity to help people in a variety of different ways. She began her career as an oncology nurse and while rewarding, the field took an emotional toll on her. She then went into the fields of long-term care, serious wound care and ostomy. Four years ago she felt a desire in her heart to do something more beautifying and uplifting while still helping people. “I fell onto my face in prayer for direction,” says Sanders. She began by taking courses to learn how to use derma fillers and do many other skin enhancing procedures. Seeing a need for a different approach to teaching in the field, she also felt compelled to become a certified instructor herself. Sanders keeps her focus with a personal mission statement, which is centered in her faith and love for God. Through this focus she has been able to start businesses (she also owns Metro Medical which is a 14 Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2014
durable medical equipment company), volunteer in the community, and be a platform to express her spiritual beliefs while aiding people in overcoming obstacles to their happiness. “My work has never been a job and pay has never been a motivator,” she says. “It is the reward I get from helping others see the love God has for them that gives my life joy and meaning. My faith has allowed many doors to be opened to offer greater things through Enhance.” While there are several spas in town, Enhance approaches client care in a unique way. Rather than just giving clients what they think they need, the staff works with them as a team in achieving their goals while getting to know them and making them feel comfortable. “We want to normalize a process that may seem scary to people who have never tried dermal fillers, bio-identical hormones, laser treatments or even weight loss assistance,” says Sanders. Every person that goes to Enhance has a story as to why they are seeking services, and many come in thinking it is their out-
er appearance that will fortify them when it is actually their soul hurting. Sanders and her amazing staff will often pray with their clients, help them determine their needs and offer guidance in building self-esteem. Microdermabrasion, dermal fillers and laser treatments become secondary enhancements to the person as a whole with the client’s well-being remaining top priority. Keeping treatments as pain-free as possible is also a priority at Enhance, and their licensed professionals have many ways to achieve this. “The industry lends itself to routinely fill lines when keeping balance in your appearance is the key to successful treatment,” explains Sanders. “The goal with dermal fillers is to help people look younger not different. When you leave Enhance, you are not going to look like a Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills cast member that has huge cheeks, huge lips and a tiny chin. You are going to go back to work, out to dinner, or even on vacation, without anyone being able to tell why you look so great.” An often-overlooked group in the industry, men can benefit from fillers and laser hair removal, as well as bio-identical hormone replacement. As “street testosterone” has become an issue in society, Sanders wants men to know that at Enhance they can get the appropriate amount of testosterone and progesterone, in a legal and safe way. As a medical spa, Enhance has the professionals on staff to draw blood and test hormone levels frequently. Since both men and women begin to lose hormone function in their mid-30’s, Enhance can test hormone levels and get clients on
a natural hormone regimen, which is much safer than the synthetic hormones you often get prescribed in other medical settings. The staff at Enhance is comprised of warm, caring and welcoming people who consider client care the most important thing, and genuinely want everyone to feel their best. Peace and graciousness are what they want to convey from the moment clients walk in the door. With a beautiful facility offering calm and welcoming treatment rooms, bathrooms with a shower and hair tools, and an impressive make up room, clients can conveniently get refreshed before they leave the spa. “I am a prayer warrior and an ambassador of God,” Sanders says. “I want people to know that even through tragedy, God does great things if they will let Him. My staff and I start every day thanking God for the opportunity to love on people.” If you decide to visit them for a consultation, they will certainly make you feel the love. For more information on Enhance Body & Skin Medical Spa visit TulsaMedicalSpa.com. hris and Kathy Fields knew for some time they wanted a marvelous new kitchen for their 1950s midtown bungalow, but like many homeowners, they were overwhelmed about exactly what direction to take. Their home has an endearing history to it, not only because Chris grew up in it, but also because of the others who have called it home. “This was Chris’s childhood home until his parents decided to move during the 1980s,” Kathy says. “They were members of St. Mary’s, and when the church heard they were selling their home, they approached his parents about renting the property, which they did.” The nuns lived there for about 20 years until Chris and Kathy decided to call it their home. “We’re still finding interesting things pop up in the flower beds from when they gardened here,” Kathy says.
16 Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2014
The cheerful home with five bedrooms -- surprising for the area -- today nicely accommodates the couple with their three teenage boys and Goldendoodle Chloe, but they felt they could accomplish so much more by changing the small and somewhat dysfunctional kitchen. Here’s where Lynn Knight-Jessee, owner of Kitchen Concepts, came in to do what she does best. The Fields had already begun working with David Molony of Masterpiece Renovations on remodeling the guest bath, kitchen and laundry area when Molony invited Knight-Jessee onboard to help to incorporate Kathy’s ideas for the spaces while maximizing on space and style. “David told me he had this client with so many great ideas who also had wonderful taste, so he had us meet right away to see what I could do to help,” recalls Knight-Jessee. When she firmly stated during this first meeting, “I can get you so much more space in this kitchen,” the Fields were thrilled and couldn’t wait to see plans to get started. They tackled the remodeling of the hall guest bath, one of three baths in the home, at the same time as the kitchen. The laundry area, which had been located in the kitchen where the ovens now reside, was moved into the back room of the home with wide closet doors concealing it, allowing easy access to the area and helping with organization. The bath, located between the kitchen and back room, was completely gutted and outfitted with new custom cabinets from Kitchen Concepts along with marble tile for the f loors and shower, modern chrome plumbing fixtures, and a sleek frameless shower door. The luxuriantly-colored granite countertops are complemented by the warm marble tile and a deep rust color painted on the smooth walls. The kitchen and attached dining room are the crown jewels of the entire project and as one can see from the before and and were the most dramatically transformed. Upon entering the dining area from the entry hall, the transitional style melded
with rustic and modern accents is delightfully cohesive with breathtaking impact. “I could tell the kitchen was going to be spectacular,” says Kathy of beginning the transformation. This prompted her to also focus some attention on the front living room since the space is the first seen when coming through the front door before entering the now fabulous dining room and kitchen. Knight-Jessee worked with existing furniture in the living room, turning a large sectional that took up too much space into one very long sofa by omitting the corner piece and rearranging other pieces. New draperies were added with several new pieces of artwork and accessories blending wonderfully with the couple’s favorite artwork from Santa Fe. Kathy and Lynn enjoyed a trip to market in Dallas to shop for new pieces for all of the areas. The dining table has a gorgeous combination of rustic and modern with its sleek hand-finished wood top finished with natural edges atop a modern metal base. The table was custom ordered and handcrafted in Italy, which Kathy loved so much that they chose a coordinating coffee table and entertainment console for the living room. “Kathy loves retro and mid-century modern, as well as the rustic look,” says Knight-Jessee of the styles they kept working together perfectly throughout the spaces. The custom draperies in the dining room are a retro-modern print, and the cusCONTINUED >

tom shades in the kitchen are a natural linen look but are woven with touches of silvery metallic threads throughout the fabric. The contemporary print on the dining room area rug is off-white with a sage green geometric design tying in wonderfully with the paint color on the walls throughout the room. The lighting selections are harmonious with an antique silver transitional cage pendant in the dining area and three chrome mini-pendants over the breakfast bar. “The now large and open combined spaces were previously chopped up into separate smaller rooms, so walls were torn out and a load-bearing beam was put in to allow for the wide expanse,” notes Knight-Jessee. The two kitchen windows, one previously smaller than the other, now are symmetrical and flank the modern stainless steel and glass hood over the induction-style cook top. All new stainless steel Bosch appliances including two full size side-by-side ovens and a microwave drawer are great additions, as Kathy re-
calls her old oven being incapable of fitting a normal size cookie sheet. The island is especially eye-catching; the attached bar appears to be freestanding over it, and the white Caesarstone counter tops gleam throughout. “It’s the most wonderful product on the market because it never has to be polished,” Knight-Jessee comments about the Caesarstone counters. “It’s a green product as it is recycled pieces of granite.” The custom white glass “Dream Wall” surrounding the hood and windows as well as serving as backsplash throughout gives a phenomenal look to
so much more now with her beautiful new and highly functional kitchen, but that she may be also making up for the time she lost when she couldn’t use it at all during the process. “My husband was great through the whole thing and always had funny things to say when something crazy would pop up,” Kathy shares. One of the things to pop up? Right after demolition began, a neighbor’s tree fell on the roof over the kitchen during a wind storm. The project took several months to complete from beginning to end and of course had its ups and downs, but they all took everything in stride.

The Stages sink by Kohler has a wood cutting board and also includes a serving tray with bowls that fit neatly inside, making it extremely convenient to dish up servings when entertaining. “We do so many drawers for pots and pans, and there’s even a wonderful amount of storage under the bar for china,” says Knight-Jessee. The storage that was gained in the kitchen is highly regarded by the Fields, including the unique “Magic Corner” that’s a fresh alternative to a traditional Lazy Susan, and the pull-out spice drawers at each side of the cook top. Knight-Jessee cannot stress enough what wonderful clients the Fields are, and mentions that Kathy even threw an “end of construction” party and invited everyone who worked on the job once it was completed. “The most fun part of our job is I’ve always ended up being friends with the clients,” says Knight-Jessee. Kathy agrees and says she loved working with her as well. Seeing the results of this project and getting to hear all the fun details about it certainly makes it obvious why this is the case. Loving Life in the
Local landscape architect inspires beautiful places to make memories with family and friends. ARTICLE NATALIE NIRK | PHOTOGRAPHY PRESTON POWER
C
ultivating beauty outdoors has been a love of Kelley Moritz’s for most of her life. When she moved to Oklahoma from Maryland in 1976, she studied Landscape Architecture at Oklahoma State University under Steve Ownby. She was fortunate to study plant materials under Dr. Carl Whitcomb, well known in the industry as the author of Know It, Grow It. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and starting a family, she listened to her husband’s encouraging words about her potential and opened her own business, Kelley Designs, Inc., in 1988 in Tulsa. Kelley enjoyed maintaining the gardens of Philbrook Museum of Art for several years with their senior horticulturist, Ralph Bendel, Jr., and began hiring her own crews in 1991 as her business continued to grow. Kelley graciously welcomed me into her lovely midtown Tulsa 20 Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2014
home, where she showed me the way to her office overlooking the beautiful backyard. I noticed several ‘to-scale’ renderings she was currently working on for clients spread around the very large and tidy office. I couldn’t help but comment on how inspiring it must be for her to work there. A wall of windows frames the picturesque gardens she has been adding to for more than 20 years. The trees with all their spring blooms surrounded by gorgeous green lawn were breathtaking. She took me outside to walk around the modestly-sized yard that has a wonderfully inviting and cozy feel, much like that of an English garden. Two hardscaped water features – which she put in decades ago and still look wonderful today – have such a natural look and the soft sounds of trickling water induce peace and relaxation. “In the springtime we have frogs galore,” Kelley says. “We call them ‘frog parties,’ with all the noise they make. They always let us know when spring is here.”
As we ambled along the hardscaped path leading to her screened-in porch, she noted several of her favorite trees and plants, such as the Blue Atlas cedars and the enormous hostas. The home has a very comfortable cabin-like feel, and the screened porch is like a snug little haven surrounded by nature. The lawn, now primarily fescue until the Bermuda grass takes over for summer, is award-worthy and resembles a courtyard surrounded by all of her free-form flower beds winding around the property’s perimeter. “This time of year my driveway gets filled to overflowing with annuals that Sunnyside Gardens delivers each week for all the clients I’ll be planting ‘seasonal color’ for, as well as for my own yard,” Kelley says. “I love perennials as well since it’s so nice to watch them pop back up each year.” Today, her business is truly a family affair with her son, Eric, overseeing all of the crews and maintenance of the many properties. Her other son, Michael, works for her brother’s landscaping firm in Dallas and Kelley travels there several times a year to do consulting work for him. Her daughter, Hannah, is a third-grade teacher but she helps with bookkeeping when needed as well. Upon mentioning her daughter, Kelley hands me a copy of what her daughter coincidentally had just written as an example for her students when giving them a recent assignment, which we both thought was too fitting not to share.
The Patio By Hannah Moritz
One of my favorite places to be is on the patio in my parents’ backyard. Great big trees provide shade and a nice breeze as you sit and enjoy family and friends. There is a pond right next to the patio that provides a soothing sound of running water; it is our peaceful getaway from the busy day. The patio also serves as a meeting place for all of the people closest to my heart. This is the place I spend most of my time on holidays and special occasions. This patio holds some of my fondest memories. My grandpa’s last Christmas with us was spent on this patio. There was a huge snowstorm that blanketed the ground; it was truly a white Christmas. Even though it was as cold as the North Pole, we spent the entire day outside on the patio talking, laughing, and enjoyed one another’s company. I will never forget that Christmas and I will forever be grateful for those memories we made on the patio. This patio will always be one of my favorite places to go and I know I will build many more memories there. It will always be a place where I know I can go to escape and find peace. It is my home. LOVING LIFE IN THE OUTDOORS (CONTINUED)
“We do it all,” Kelley shares. “I do consulting and create hand-rendered drawings for landscape design. We cater to many different clients of all ages, tastes and budgets, from older clients with small landscapes to younger families with lots of space.” Her firm not only handles installations of anything from flower beds, water features, hardscaping, or pergolas, but also provides complete year-round lawn maintenance and sprinkler repair. They have a workshop in Broken Arrow where all the lawn equipment and trucks are kept, and they usually have about 9-11 employees who work there including their main foreman, Sebastian, who’s worked with them for about 15 years. “We have two mowing crews, two landscaping crews, and a crew for seasonal color,” she says, adding that they also handle weed control, fertilizing and seeding. “I love doing lawn maintenance for clients because I can let them know when it’s time to plant or deal with any problems. Mother Nature is my boss, and you never know what you’re going to get.” 22 Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2014
We then hopped in her car so she could drive me to view her work at several of her nearby clients’ homes. “I love Midtown and most of my clients are here,” she shares, “but we have several clients in south Tulsa and Broken Arrow as well.” We pulled up to a beautiful home with a very wide expanse of brilliantly green lawn and got out to walk the grounds. “Tulsans love their beautiful lawns, and we work hard to create the perfect marriage of fescue and Bermuda.” Her company takes
great pride in keeping beautifully lush, green grass virtually all year round. These particular clients had her create a landscaping bed surrounding a very tall, unique lighthouse they had carved out of a tree in the front yard, in addition to an enormous amount of other billowing, beautiful flower beds all along the front of the home. In the backyard, she showed me a ‘bubbler’ water feature as we traveled along the hardscaped areas leading to the back patios with perennial gardens perched above them. Large flagstone pavers lead to an herb garden, and a stately fence of arborvitae line a portion of the back of the property. She took me past several other homes including one right around the corner from Philbrook with tight spaces around their swimming pool, which were filled remarkably with just the right types of plants and mixtures of colors. A diverse container garden worked wonders to soften the wide expanse of concrete on the side of the home. “We planted evergreens in several of these and the other pots will have fresh seasonal color in them very soon,” she notes. After seeing this property and several others, it was clear Kelley
certainly can successfully work with all different types of landscapes and applications. “My favorite thing to work on is outdoor living – the plantings, walkways, pergolas – because I enjoy creating a relaxing atmosphere or oasis for clients and their families,” she says. Her passion for landscaping and taking exceptional care of her clients is obvious, and family is unquestioningly important to her. “I love what I do,” she remarks, which is apparent in her enthusiasm when talking about her work. It’s truly a pleasure to see and to hear her constantly rattle off so many plant names I’ve never even heard of, which I told her really made me acutely aware that I didn’t have the plant terminology down as much as I thought I did. I left feeling profoundly inspired to create more cherished memories in my own backyard with family and friends. For more information about Kelley Design, Inc. visit KelleyDesignInc.com. Elote Café and The Vault HUSBAND AND WIFE RESTAURATEURS PROMOTE HEALTH AND GROWTH IN OUR COMMUNITY
ARTICLE LARA FRIEND | PHOTOGRAPHY BEAUTIFUL EXCHANGE PHOTOGRAPHY
T
he owner of Elote Café and The Vault in Downtown Tulsa, Libby Auld always knew she had a strong desire to be in the restaurant industry. Growing up in a large family where food was always of great importance, Libby knew the food industry conveniently works wonderfully with her personality. She recalls making a bold statement when waitressing years ago at Mexicali Border Café, “I am going to own my own Mexican restaurant in downtown Tulsa one day.” (She also happens to be a fellow graduate of mine from OSU Institute of Technology in Okmulgee with a culinary arts degree.) In 2008, Libby and her husband, Jeramy, made those dreams a reality when they opened the doors to Elote Café in downtown’s Deco district. Taking the former space of Nelson’s Buffeteria, they filled a void of restaurants ca-

tering to the lunch crowd. Initially they served only lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. daily then added dinner to the menu soon after. “We have a definite niche in the downtown market,” Libby states. “Not many lunch restaurants in the area were offering healthy and environmentally friendly products.” Elote Café focuses on healthy ingredients, attracting people who want a healthy alternative to the traditional Mexican fare. Libby adds, “A successful, healthy downtown is good for the whole city and its surrounding areas.” The couple is extremely passionate about using quality products from local farms employing sustainable and humane practices. They get their beef and pork from Natural Farms located in Tulsa and much of their produce comes from local gardens and farmers markets. They want their own restaurants to be even more ‘green’ after seeing how other restaurants work. “I feel it is the responsible thing to do for our environment,” explains Libby. “The restaurant industry should not be so based on consumption and trash.” The owners have also done wonderfully in educating the public on more sustainable practices.
With a colorful, laid-back atmosphere that’s family-friendly and affordable, Elote also offers an exclusive form of monthly entertainment: Luchadore wrestling. “The wrestling was kind of an accident but we needed a theme for the bar,” says Libby. A wrestling arena in the bar initially used as a stage became a permanent fixture after trying some wrestling matches in it. It now takes place once a month and really draws crowds. Local artists made much of the art and décor in the restaurant; a paper mache Luchadore hangs from the ceiling in the bar area and many Luchadore masks adorn the walls. The local duo has also received national acclaim. Food Network Magazine featured “Puffy Tacos,’ one of the most popular items on Elote’s menu, as the “Best Taco in Oklahoma.” Be sure to check out $2 Puffy Taco Night on Wednesdays. I had the pleasure of trying these and they were absolutely delicious, as were the flavorful side dishes. The owners are both vegetarian so their menu does have quite a few vegetarian options including quinoa, black beans, sweet potatoes and elote. Just steps away from Elote is their newest restaurant. The Vault presents a fine dining experience in an unparalleled mid-century modern locale. Housed in the historic First National Auto Bank, it offers an exciting atmosphere with craft cocktails and a classic twist on American cuisine made from scratch while practicing many of the same resourceful and sustainable methods used at Elote. The Vault has 150 parking spaces that they share with Elote Café which is a pleasantly surprising convenience for the downtown area. The Aulds enjoy being involved with many charitable events and organizing several festivals celebrated downtown. The Luchadore Run benefits the local YMCA, which uses 100 percent of the funds to send underprivileged kids to YMCA summer camps; and Salsafest raises funds for Sustainable Tulsa.
Both Elote and The Vault are involved with the sixth annual ‘Top of the Town’ fundraiser coming up on June 12 benefiting the Child Care Resource Center. Taking place atop of many of downtown’s tallest historical buildings, the event includes music and food from several area restaurants and will be a sight to see. Salsafest takes place July 25, and home cooks are welcome to sign up to make approximately five gallons of salsa to participate in offering taste samples for up to 200 people. Activities include a Chihuahua costume contest, a race, a pepper eating contest, hula hooping, live music and salsa dancing. These two distinctive establishments continue to attract supporters of their business practices and the patronage of those desiring a healthy, savory meal in a unique setting. Honestly, there are multiple reasons to give them a try if you haven’t already. Lara Friend, a dedicated wife and mother of two, is a Culinary Arts graduate from Oklahoma State Institute of Technology. She currently enjoys life as a homemaker and writer, and simply loves working with food.

Parting Thoughts
The Beauty of Imperfection WORDS HEATHER MOORHEAD
“A beautiful thing is never perfect.” Egyptian Proverb
I
t doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. This is important to remember, especially when it comes to our homes and gardens, because perfect doesn’t need to be the goal. If we are to be perfectly honest with ourselves, our homes, gardens, or verandas are never completely finished; they are more of a work in progress. They usually are an ever-evolving project of us continually adding the finishing touches. I know I have a habit of becoming so obsessed with completing a project that I can forget the process should be fun, too. A perfect example is the outside sitting area that I am creating at my home – I want it perfect and completed yesterday. However, I have to shop for the right furniture for the right price, and I have a small area so oversized pieces will not work. What color scheme should I go with? What plants will work best? And then of course, I cannot invite anyone over to enjoy it until it is completed. Baking or creating a project with my children is a perfect reminder that the process can be messy and frustrating, but in the end I can look at the finished project and say, “My children and I created

this!” The process is part of the memory making, as is the story you can enjoy telling while sitting around with your friends and family. A happy home is not a perfect home – it is a home filled with the ones we love and the treasures that remind us of the happy times along our journey. Life is not a destination, but rather an expedition of eclectic experiences. Enjoy the journey! To me a happy home is having a comfortable place, inside or outside, where I can sit and share a cup of tea with my daughter or a friend. If you wait until it is perfect, it will be too late. If you happen to be a renter, you do not have to be left out of the fun of creating a beautiful home. In her newly released book, The Nesting Place: It Doesn’t Have to be Perfect to be Beautiful, author Myquillyn Smith remarks, “As a renter, I’ve always felt like the unreached people group of the design world.” She has designed and beautifully inspired thousands through her design blog, The Nesting Place, all while renting a home. Your life is probably already beautiful and amazing. Sometimes our desire for things that we think will make us feel happier actually causes us to lose sight of the one thing that really does create happiness and fulfillment. There is a freedom in learning to live within our imperfections. Happy designing to all of us!
