Once in a blue moon...
W
e are not a wedding magazine, but every other year we feature this topic because we are a lifestyle magazine and weddings are part of all of our lives in some way or another. When our Home & Fashion Editor Natalie Nirk got wind of the wonderfully unique twists Tulsans are putting on this traditional occasion, we knew we had something special to share with you. Tulsa Lifestyle is all about being "inspired by community," and the details and imagination behind the examples in our feature are sure to inspire brides, grooms and anyone else planning a special event. We are also fortunate to have a great team, and many of our partners, friends, writers and photographers were excited to share interesting ideas on the topic, as well. My own wedding was uncommon in its time, before destination weddings became a "thing." Nineteen years ago I walked down a conch shell aisle and stood under a palm frond arch on a white-sand beach at the exact moment the sun set and the moon rose over the island of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. It was literally a "blue moon," the second full moon in a month. I thought it would be fun to share one of my favorite places there, the Bitter End Yacht Club, as an idea for potential honeymooners. Trust me, there is nothing bitter about the BEYC. I leave you with these words I've been giving as an enclosure with engagement gifts for many years. (My own non-traditional twist to the experience). It hangs on a tag off a bottle of great wine I give to the happy couple: How Marriage Is Like Fine Wine: Sometimes it takes a lot of stomping around to get to the good stuff... It's a long, involved process that takes a lot of work... The process starts off with a party... There are good years, and there are bad years... When you find a name you like, you stick with it... It's wild and fruity in the early years; it's slow and smooth in the later years... When two good Houses come together, they can produce a great product... Each one is unique... You savor every moment... The old cliche is true: it really does get better with time.

The Campbell Hotel and Event Centers at 2636 E. 11th Street has undergone transformation. Though the block-long building looks the same as it has since 1927 (a requirement of the National Register of Historic Places), the inside has undergone a renaissance. The Campbell used to be a 36-room businessman’s hotel where you could rent a room for two bits a night on Route 66 then take the trolley downtown and sell your wares. During renovation, they found wonderful remnants of those days and times hidden in the walls. They’ve scaled down to 26 rooms, in order for each to have its own bathroom. As part of 2011 Designer Showcase, the hotel offers uniquely themed rooms designed by local decorators. They’ve added all the modern conveniences and then some, and now have a full-service restaurant that provides room service: Maxxwell’s Restaurant. Their two event centers each has its own style. The 4,000-squarefoot Ballroom is elegant with lovely restrooms and seating for around 200 people. The Renaissance Square Event Center adjacent to the Hotel is the same size, but offers a whole different vibe with exposed brick and ductwork, stained concrete floors--a more industrial but a very lovely space. The Hotel hosts some beautiful weddings/receptions in both centers, as well as corporate parties, class reunions and all kinds of get-togethers. Their ability to offer the unique complete combination for guests—event, food and guest rooms—means it is convenient for wedding parties with out of town guests. 2636 E 11th St, Tulsa, OK 74104 918.744.5500 12:58 PM Visit TheCampbellHotel.com for more information.

Saint Simeon’s, a premiere senior living community in Tulsa, hosted a “Doggone Birthday Party” for its “Chief Executive Cuddler,” Simone, a Golden Retriever. Simone’s birthday wish was to help the dogs of Tulsa’s homeless population. Simone invited her party guests to bring donations of food for the dogs of the homeless, which will be donated to canines through the Tulsa Animal Welfare Shelter and Iron Gate. Saint Simeon’s has taken on assisting the dogs of the homeless as a project of interest recently. During Christmas, Simone coordinated a holiday drive, which resulted in over 500 pounds of dog food being raised for the dogs of the homeless. Currently, Saint Simeon’s Residents meet every Monday afternoon to re-bag dog food donations as a volunteer effort to help Tulsa Animal Welfare Shelter with the distribution process to the dogs of the homeless.

Gifts for Your Spouse - And Your House!
CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARIES WITH MILESTONE GIFTS FOR THE HOME ARTICLE ROBIN SPAWN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

or anyone that has tied the knot, you know that a wedding is simply one day, but your anniversaries are something to celebrate year after year. As tradition goes, each anniversary milestone has its own special gift category to coincide with it, such as “silver” for 25 years and “gold” for 50 years. These gifts are not only a way to treat your spouse, but they can also help you and your loved one build a home together. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to look around your house and see pieces that represent the years you two have spent together?
2ND YEAR - COTTON
Your bedroom should be your own personal oasis. Purchase a bedding set that you are going to be excited to come home to. Eastern Accents has a wide variety of tailored and stylish bedding that will add pizazz and life to every bedroom.
1ST YEAR – PAPER
The first year of marriage should be marked with something special. How about adding some printed art to your entry or living room? A lovely piece of art for your home can be something you shop for together or signifies a special memory. Go ahead and start building a collection you can add to over the years.

3RD YEAR - LEATHER
A leather watch is an obvious choice for this anniversary but try thinking outside the box. Instead of buying something that will be tucked away in a drawer, why not invest in a chic leather recliner? Furniture manufacturers have really stepped up their game designing contemporary recliner styles that fit into modern designs. This recliner has sleek lines with decorative pewter nail head trim. Your husband will enjoy kicking his feet up and you will love the look – it’s a win-win! 12

Clients ask me all the time, “Are faux flowers out of style?” I always respond “Of course not!” Now, with that being said, the quality of the faux arrangement is the key. All flowers are not created equal. For a bride that plans ahead, try selecting a faux arrangement to display at your wedding that you can incorporate into your future home. This bouquet could easily transition from a wedding centerpiece to a dining room focal point. Plus, cherish the memory of knowing that it was there on your special day.

Choosing a Wedding Photographer ARTICLE COURTNEY L. LEWIS | PHOTOGRAPHY DEFINING IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE STUDIO SD
C
hoosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day. Here are some tips to ensure you get the photographs of your dreams. 1. Start the selection process early. Some wedding photographers book 6 months to a year out, or longer. 2. Realize that you get what you pay for. It’s important to remember that this is an important day. You don’t want to sacrifice quality for saving money. 3. Choose someone reputable. Sure, there are a lot of photographers out there. In the age digital cameras, Photoshop and Facebook business pages, just about anyone can claim to be a professional photographer. Make sure you get to view multiple wedding galleries of the photographer and ask for references. Remember, professional photographers pay for insurance, taxes, advertising, shipping and studio expenses which make their prices way higher. Trust me, it’s worth it. 4. Tell the photographer exactly what you’re looking for. A good photographer will tell you what will look good and what won’t, but if you don’t ask, you’ll never know. 5. A good photographer will use editing software to get rid of an unsightly blemish, re14
Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2015
move stray hairs and make colors look vibrant. Be wary of photographers who over edit photographs. It’s important that, on your wedding day, you still resemble yourself! 6. Ask about wedding packages. Most photographers have wedding packages that include the bridal portraits, pre-wedding festivities, wedding ceremony and reception photographs. 7. Find out how many photos the photographer will provide you with from the wedding and how they will be delivered. As a general rule, a photographer will deliver 50-100 photographs from your wedding. Ask about the cost of prints vs. digital files. 8. Ask questions. Ask a LOT of questions. How many weddings has he/she photographed? What is his/her style of photography? Do they edit photographs? Do they bring an assistant to shoot as well? 9. Make a list of photographs and poses that you would like to make sure are shot. Give that list to the photographer to make sure he/she understands and feels comfortable with your requests. There are many resources online for wedding photography checklists. Print one out and use it.
10. Price! Price! Price! Make sure you completely understand the cost of your photography and what is included. There will be upfront deposits to reserve the photographer and a final payment. Make sure to make final payment arrangements before your big day.

Teach Your Children Family Banking PASSING ON A WEALTH MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY ARTICLE SHAWN BYERLY
T
he Vanderbilts were once America’s most wealthy family. But they are curiously absent from the Forbes 2014 top 185 richest families, while the Rothschild’s fortune is valued at over $350 billion. It’s not a coincidence that one continues to flourish, while the other fortune has been severely dissipated. Prior to his passing in 1812, Amschel Rothschild taught his five sons conservative money management. They borrowed from a family “bank” and were taught to pay back each time they borrowed with interest. Each family member passed this knowledge down to their children, and in order to use this family banking system, attendance was mandatory at the annual meeting. America’s wealthiest families continue to stay wealthy because they think beyond their current lifespan, and they teach their children crucial economic principles that aren’t taught in schools. “The most rewarding aspect of teaching Privatised Banking is instilling my clients with a ‘wealth mentality’ that can be transferred to their children and/or grandchildren and then onward to succeeding generations over a long period of time," says Shawn Byerly, CEO of PrivatisedBanking.com. “You are teaching a financial process, not selling a financial product.” It’s the same financial process that the Rothschilds have used for more than 150 years to grow and protect their wealth and deposit financial wisdom in their children. The essence of the plan is that when each generation becomes parents (grand16
Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2015
parents), they buy a life insurance contract on their children (grandchildren) that is specially designed for maximum cash value. When the message is ingrained into each child-bearing generation, you will have created “perpetual motion” in your family’s financial future. WHY LIFE INSURANCE?
The idea of creating a perpetual family wealth process has almost nothing to do with insuring your child’s life. It just happens that Privatised Banking contracts are the most efficient way to create perpetual motion. Privatised Banking policies never go down in value, credit guaranteed tax-free interest, and allow access to your money without penalty. Initially, the death benefit has very little to do with creating intergenerational wealth, but when death occurs the system becomes self-sustaining. “To use a golf analogy, the Privatised Banking policy is just the best club," Byerly explains. "I’m educating you how to swing it. The knowledge of how to swing it perfectly is what is most valuable. If you obey the principles, each successor generation will be in a better financial position than the one before it. Guaranteed.”
To learn more about how you can use Privatised Banking for intergenerational wealth, combining it with rental real estate, or financing your automobiles, call Shawn Byerly at 918.688.7906.

Today's couples are marrying with unique modern charm.
F
or today’s weddings, really anything goes… but lately a lot of brides and grooms are opting for traditional with a twist. The more unique and creative, the better, and it’s not just about being overthe-top or sparing no expense. It’s much more about spending time and thought on the fine details, and all these little things add up to an extraordinary and even more memorable occasion for not just the bride and groom, but every guest in attendance. In a quick visit with Ashley Farthing of Farthing Events and event specialist, Lauren Wagner, at their cheerfully designed office inside the Philtower, I was not only blown away by the unique elegance of their work in photos, but also the creativity and customizing that goes on for each client. Their energy and ideas are nothing short of amazing while they manage to keep a relaxed, low-key feel to things. It’s easy to see how they've surely put many brides-tobe at ease with their experience and sweet, calming demeanors. This team gives new meaning to thinking outside the box. “How do I engage all five senses in a design?” Farthing asks herself at each project’s start, and creatively finds ways to weave a common thread through all aspects of the plans. The first sight of the invitation, the smell of the f lowers and food, the sound of a quartet playing live music, the feel of the linens, the taste of the cocktails… each plays a great role in the overall experience.
“We like to make sure guests have a drink in their hand within the first 60 seconds,” says Farthing. “It welcomes them and makes them feel catered to. After that, guests can delight in the many details they undoubtedly will notice, and the thoughtful planning that’s been going on for months. For the venue of one recent wedding, they managed to get the city’s approval to shut down a part of Boston Avenue in the heart of the Deco District in downtown Tulsa – no small task that needed six months advanced planning to secure but the end result was fabulous. Our city’s extraordinary architecture served as the backdrop with guests seated on each side of the street’s center line, or in this case, the aisle.

It’s about spending time and thought on the fine details, and all these little things add up to an extraordinary and even more memorable occasion for not just the bride and groom, but for every guest in attendance. For a recent creative photo shoot, the theme was Art Deco with a modern edge. Farthing Events assisted in designing a floral arrangement consisting of simple, single cuttings placed into individual test tubes woven together by copper wire and suspended from the ceiling above the dining table. “Flowers are costly, and there are lots of ways to supplement with décor,” Farthing shares. “The same copper wire was used throughout the handmade tabletop décor including the vases of flowers, candles and abstract art made from clear tubes.” You can even look closely and see copper details atop the wedding cake, and the stir sticks in drinks have the same design as the abstract tabletop art. Another couple requested an updated version of a traditional backyard wedding reception, and it turned out anything but run-of-the-mill. “We built the venue from the ground up,” says Farthing. When guests arrived, the front yard beckoned with a pianist’s music flowing from a grand piano and cocktail tables adorned with linens of glittering gold or white ruffles. The backyard was virtually a wedding village with numerous tents billowing with white fabric and brilliantly lit by chandeliers, custom lighting projections and dazzling breakup patterns. The cake swing inside its own tent is an awe-inspiring sight. “My dad is an engineer and so a lot of my visions are made into reality with his expertise on how to construct it,” Farthing says of the cake swing, which consists of a piece of Lucite for the base held and wired into the tent sup-
ports by cables. The hors d’oeuvres and the groom’s cake are also displayed with this same magnificent effect. Farthing also enjoys catering to the kids at a lot of events, especially weddings. This can include their own separate boys’ and girls’ tables covered with paper tablecloths and containers of crayons, and even their own menus with kid-friendly food to choose from. She’s even enlisted the help of Seeking Sitters, a Tulsa area babysitting service, to help with the entertainment and supervision of all the little ones so everyone can relax and enjoy. “We do a mix of about 60 percent weddings and 40 percent social gatherings, such as galas or fundraisers for nonprofits, bar and bat mitzvahs and milestone birthdays, so we constantly have a great mix of different projects going on,” says Farthing. Farthing Events is a full-service event design and production company, so she works on anything from small intimate events to 1,500-person gatherings. They’re excited to be working on the Patriot Championship for the Folds of Honor organization, which will include a gala of approximately 1,000 guests and the “Freedom Concert,” which has in the past included entertainers like Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker. Of course right now is the height of the wedding season so it’s not uncommon for Farthing Events to work extra long hours during the week of an event to start setting up. A typical wedding setup can start about a week in advance beginning with the tent installation, then there’s a trail of deliveries from that point which require constant oversight. On the day of an event, Farthing may start working at 8 a.m. and work through the night until 2 am. “We absolutely love what we do and we focus on that when we’re exhausted,” Farthing says. Being a part of so many special occasions enables her to make a great difference in people’s lives, and the memories she helps to create are treasured keepsakes for everyone. For more information on Farthing Events visit FarthingEvents.com. Natalie Nirk is our Home & Fashion Editor and also a Look closely. This cake is suspended on a swing.

Honeymoon in Paradise ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The Bitter End Yacht Club is a sweet way to begin a lifetime together. Editor's Note: Many people go to a place like this and wish they could quit their jobs and move there; I actually did. I spent two years living (and was married) in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. The BEYC was an integral part of my life there, and I wanted to share this place with our readers because it is one of my favorite spots on our planet.
The Bitter End Yacht Club. Don't be deceived by the name. The wonderful story behind the name of this extraordinary place is possibly an old sailor's tale, but it's a good one. It's

also a lot to do with why it is expensive and why it is difficult to get to, but oh so worth the trouble. This resort is found at the very tip end of the wonderful chain of islands that comprise the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. It's the last stop in the northern Caribbean before a long journey down the rest of the island chain to South America--the "bitter end." You can hike to the actual end and see both the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans meet. It's incredible. This yacht club is a sailor's mecca, for sure, but even if you're not a sailor you will still find plenty to do here. (Unless it's golf. This is not a golfer's destination.) For Tulsans who have grown up with Grand Lake, the water sports and laid-back lifestyle will be familiar, but the luxury and glistening turquoise water let you know you're not in Oklahoma anymore. Honeymooning at the BEYC is choosing a bit of adventure. It's for couples who want something different, a place that will allow you to enjoy each other's company in a tropical location and try some new things together, or enjoy some intimate places without long stretches of flat beach with masses of other people. The Chicago-based Hokum family has owned and curated this special place for 40 years, working to create a personal paradise for their guests. You'll pay a premium for your stay, but the small, luxurious white sand beaches and amazing array of opportunities to make memories together will make the Bitter End your sweetest beginning.

Storm Proof Your Roof PREPARING FOR OKLAHOMA'S STORM SEASON ARTICLE CHARLES NICHOLS
I
t's storm season. We know what that means. Oklahoma suffered more than 114,000 hail-related claims between 2010 and 2012, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The 2013 tornadoes cost insurance companies more than any other state, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Oklahoma was second only to Texas in tornado, thunderstorm and hail-related insurance payouts from 2000-2013.
The effect of the storms on insurance deductibles is a reality we all deal with, and factors into how we manage damage, so much so that the insurance industry is researching building material improvements. Until recently, many Oklahoma homeowners had $500 to $1000 dollar deductibles; now the norm is 1 or 2 percent of home value (or more), and some companies charge separate higher deductibles for wind and hail events. Higher deductibles don’t solve the problem. Repair costs increase annually; many carriers seek to cut their losses by limiting coverage. Review your coverage immediately. Don’t get caught with less coverage than you thought you had. Read your policy declaration page; if you don't understand your coverage, contact your agent. Many insurance companies are changing their business practices; if yours is one of those, you want to be prepared ahead of any problems. Your claim history matters, so consult a professional before you file a claim to make sure the damage exceeds your deductible.
Large hail (tennis ball size or larger) can do severe damage. Immediate repairs will be needed if holes or punctures. Your insurance policy requires that you do your due diligence to protect your remaining property so you may need to make temporary emergency repairs. Do not make permanent repairs until your insurance adjuster has been out. Take pictures of the damage and keep any receipts you may incur. Also, call your insurance agent and notify them that you intend to make emergency temporary repairs to protect your remaining property. Emergency repairs will be paid back to you with no deductible removed. Golf ball size hail can total a roof, but may also just damage the surface. This is an area of vulnerability for homeowners, so take your time getting bids from good quality companies. A surface hail-damaged roof doesn’t always require immediate replacement so you have time to get bids. Ping-pong size hail or smaller may do damage but can be only minor.
WHEN TO FILE A CLAIM?
DO A VISUAL INSPECTION IF POSSIBLE. LOOK AT:
Hail damage on cars is easy to see; roof damage is more difficult. How do you determine if you should file a claim? Many people call their insurance carrier for an inspection without knowing whether they actually have damage or not. If you file a claim and get no money, it’s still a claim. First, if you’re unsure, call a professional you know and trust. If you don’t know someone, ask a friend who they trust or call your insurance agent. Check references, check BBB and Angie’s List. Always make sure your contractor is insured.
Gutters – Aluminum gutters show dents. Gutter screens can mask damage. Dents are typically inside the gutter pushing outwards. Window screens and frames – Check window screens on all sides of the house. Look for streaks going down the screen. Also check the vinyl frames for chips or breaks. Soft metals such as aluminum trim around windows, door frames, garage door - Large hail can and will damage the metal panels on your garage door. Check bottom door panels for dents. AC unit outside Soft woods on exterior - Cedar is a soft wood and will splinter with large hail. It may only look like surface damage but if you see splintering it is a good sign of large hail. Vehicles - If your car is damaged, it’s likely your roof is, too.
TIPS TO DETERMINE IF CLAIM IS NEEDED
Size, density and hardness of hail stones determine damage. Homes can withstand smaller hail many times without sustaining damage. Storms that occur early in the season are typical of this smaller hail. A heavy smaller stone can do damage, while a larger lighter stone might not. There are many variables to consider. 22

Style Wise
The Right Ring
CHOOSING AN ENGAGEMENT RING TO FLATTER YOUR FINGER SHAPE ARTICLE LONNIE IANNAZZO
Y
ou have found the right guy, now it’s time to choose the right engagement ring. It’s one of the things girls dream about nearly all their lives... having “Prince Charming” pop the question. Whether he is about to propose or you are just out looking for fun, there are some rules of thumb (pun intended) for choosing just the right ring for your finger size and shape. It is no different than finding the right style dress for your body type. LONG FINGERS
If you have long fingers you have the most flexibility with style. A ring that features a wider band is flattering on this hand type. Consider a bold style if this suits your personality. Round and princess cut diamonds will enhance the look and shape of your hand. SLENDER FINGERS
For the woman with slender fingers, smaller stones tend to make the hand look wider. If a large stone is preferred consider a narrower cut such as a marquise shape or emerald cut. Thicker bands also tend to make the finger look wider.
traditional with funkier lines. If you have had trouble with rings spinning on your finger, a good jeweler has remedies that will eliminate those issues. Keep the ring style in context to the size of the hand. Even with a larger knuckle you don’t want to overpower the small hand. SMALL HANDS
SHORT FINGERS
Many women with short fingers think they are limited on style, but that is not really the case. Try on rings that have elongated shaped center diamonds like oval, marquise and pear shape. Staying with a narrower band and the longer cut diamonds will tend to elongate the hand. If your lifestyle allows, longer finger nails will also add to the illusion of hand length.
Small hands will tend to be enhanced with rings with overall smaller proportions. Try rings with narrower bands and smaller side diamonds. This is not to say you can only have a small center diamond. The center can be whatever size you want it to be just look for rings with thinner shanks the sit a bit closer to the finger rather than the “cathedral” style. LARGE HANDS
WIDE FINGERS
With wider fingers you have the room to experiment with many different engagement ring styles. Stay away from elongated diamond cuts such as marquise or emerald cut and opt for wide center diamonds such as asscher, round, radiant or princess cut. There are many ring styles that feature wider design across the top. Along with wider rings consider those with angles or non symmetrical lines. Medium to wide side shanks will also tend to narrow the finger. BIG KNUCKLES
As with many hand types choosing the right style will take the attention away from what some women are self conscious about. Treating the hand with a big knuckle the same as a wide finger will draw attention away. The addition that should be considered though is to try ring styles that are bolder and heavier. Have your jeweler show you styles that are outside of 24
Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2015
Some women with large hands feel self conscious about their hands. That shouldn’t be the case. You experiment and be creative when it comes to style. Try rings with bolder style. You can wear thin, wide or medium band thicknesses. Almost any diamond shape will look great on you. Of course all of the suggestions above are guidelines. The best suggestion I can give is to try on a lot of styles. The ultimate guideline is to find the style that you are most comfortable with and that fits your personality. Avoid jewelry stores that are in a hurry to sell you something and get you out the door. This is going to be the symbol of your love and commitment to each other, something that is intended to last a lifetime. Take your time. Lonnie Iannazzo is the owner of Vincent Anthony Jewelers and has 25 years experience in the jewelry business. Stop in to try on a few rings for size, he's happy to help you with your selections. Feel Special 624 KITCHEN & CATERING OFFERS AN ELEGANT OPTION FOR MOTHER'S DAY ARTICLE LARA FRIEND | PHOTOGRAPHY SEAN GLOVER
T
he inspired concept that is 624 Kitchen & Catering takes its name from the beautiful building where it’s located. In the lobby of the historic Oklahoma Natural Gas structure at 624 S. Boston Avenue, the restaurant is a distinctively beautiful place to dine in, as well as offering truly fine food to dine on. Owner Justin Thompson was the visionary who saw the potential and developed the concept. “This is one of the first Art Deco buildings built in downtown Tulsa when it was the turn of the century and it is listed on the national register of historical buildings,” he says. It has stunning architecture adorned with marble columns, 20-foot high ceilings, ornate trim work and huge windows that illuminate the room perfectly. Interestingly, Thompson came to the realization after graduating from Oklahoma University in zoology that his true passion was in culinary arts. He began his cooking career in 2002 as a chef with the Polo Grill. After opening nine restaurants in 13 years, Thompson now owns four of his own. In additional to 624, he also owns Prhyme, Juniper and Tavolo. One of 624’s claims to fame is the fantastic Sunday Brunch, which is the perfect place to bring mom for Mother’s Day. The ambiance will make her feel special, and the impressive food offering includes a large variety of options for the whole family. Traditional Caesar salad, mixed greens with dressing and tabbouleh are among the salad selections. Choose from an array of

fresh fruits, yogurt parfaits, cheeses and cold cuts. In the hot food section, you’ll find French toast/waffles with toppings, candied bacon, sausage patties, jalapeno cheddar biscuits/ gravy, stuffed chicken and Parmesan potatoes. Chef-attended carving stations offer prime rib and sugar-cured ham, and an omelet station with many options. The dessert table features an assortment of treats, including bread pudding, donuts, brownies, cookies and tarts. A few of my favorite items at brunch were the candied bacon (it was exceptional), the prime rib with horseradish sauce, and the Parmesan potatoes. My personal favorite dessert offerings were the sea salt chocolate chip cookie, the bread pudding and the donuts. I ordered the restaurant’s signature drink, the “624.” It was a pineapple-infused cocktail that was delicious. They also offer Mimosas and Bloody Marys. All of the tables were beautifully draped with white tablecloths and napkins. The wait staff was very attentive and were able to answer any question I had about the food being served. Chef Thompson says they typically serve 150 people on Sunday. There was a steady flow of diners when I was there. Additionally, 624 Kitchen & Catering also specializes in corporate seminars, weddings and holiday entertaining. Lara Friend, a dedicated wife and mother of two, is a culinary arts graduate from Oklahoma State Institute of Technology. She currently enjoys life as a homemaker and writer, and simply loves working with food.

Parting Thoughts
A Nice Day for a White Out Wedding WORDS DENISE SNODELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
D
ream gown? Check. Persnickety florist? Check. Top-notch wedding planner? Check. Unexpected glitches? Check-Check. I have attended and participated in many different weddings across the country. Every blessed event had one thing in common: some sort of unforeseen mishap. Amazingly, not one involved a wacky uncle + booze. To all future brides and grooms, “zillas” included, the only thing I can advise is to roll with the fiasco. With every marriage, your sense of humor is necessary icing on the multi-tiered cake. You may as well start laughing on day one. Here are some true-life wedding blunders from my own experiences… Years ago, a dear friend invited me to be her maid of honor. We lived in different cities. When I arrived days before the wedding, we noticed my pink taffeta frock endured travel wrinkles - despite my direct flight, oversized garment bag and careful packing. “No problem,” said the giggly bride, “I’ll have my dry cleaner press it!” The morning of the Sunday wedding, my friend realized she forgot to pick up the dress the evening before. The dry-cleaner was closed with the maid of honor’s gown locked inside! Luckily, her groom and his buddy were freshly-minted journalists. They quickly employed their investigative skills, tracked down the owner’s home number (via the fire department) and met the grumpy bed-headed man at the shop. Hours later, I began my promenade down the aisle. It was an outdoor wedding. The sky was blue. My gown was as smooth as a rose petal. The guests had no idea what had happened! But they 34

did notice when the heel of my left shoe got stuck between the garden bricks. Good times. Then there was the wedding of some friends in the broadcast industry. The bride had asked a talented videographer to tape her big day. He agreed, but privately grumbled to me her wedding was scheduled the same time his beloved football team was playing. He had never missed a game in his life. Ever! The videographer found a creative solution. Just before the wedding, he showed me the transistor radio in his suit pocket. The ear bud wires looked like video equipment. He was all grins until the church’s sound system somehow picked up the game’s frequency during the vows. Fumble! At my own wedding, my newly-minted brother-in-law “decorated” our getaway car with some beyond-PG-13 innuendos. No. “Innuendos” is too soft of a description for what was scrawled across the windshield. But I gave him a pass, probably due to what happened at his wedding a few years earlier. My future husband and I were a new item. I was keeping a low profile as “the girlfriend.” Shyness and some bad static cling will do that. So when it came time for the bride to toss the bouquet, I hid in the back of the room. Way back. Her throw was so wild, it surpassed the anxious “single ladies” in the front, went through the chandelier and literally fell into my arms. Sometimes, even the flubs can lead to wonderful things.
