Editor’s Letter
TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Fall!) A
hhhh, fall is definitely here… and I believe it’s my favorite season in Tulsa. It’s a season that’s always packed with extra activities and events around town, so my family and I try to soak up as many of them as possible before reaching the point of overwhelming exhaustion. It signals the start of dressing in layers and pulling out my favorite boots, inevitably leading to the bittersweet purging of the closet to make room for some fresh new things that have caught my eye. I habitually kick off holiday shopping in early fall and gradually squirrel away special finds in secret places, knowing I’ll be grateful to myself later for getting a head start if I can just manage to remember where they’re all hidden. I’ve concocted dozens of different soup recipes over the years for chilly nights, and tend to bake more often while teaching my daughters about helping in the kitchen. Seeing their excitement grow about annual traditions on the horizon is always a joy, and it’s fun to incorporate new twists to our own treasured family traditions.
I’ll admit I have an infatuation with a beautifully set table and carefully planned meal -- something about it just makes me feel extra special and loved. In this issue we get to see the thoughtful things local designer and event planner, Jeffrey Evans, incorporates when planning a special occasion in his own lovely home for family and friends as well as when helping clients get ready for the holidays. We also have a delicious story on Vitter’s Catering, who specializes in private sushi parties among many other things. For those thinking about planning a holiday party or other special event, be sure to check them out -- you’re sure to never forget the delectable dishes from their kitchen.

BROKEN ARROW’S NEW MOVIE MULTIPLEX One of the finest theaters in the country is opening in Tulsa, complete with full-service dinners, drinks, and more than $1 million worth of imported marble décor reminiscent of the grandeur of historic theaters and old Hollywood. Slated to open late this year, the theater is conveniently located right off the Creek Turnpike at 1700 W. Aspen Creek Drive. The Broken Arrow Warren Theatre should prove to be the biggest and best Warren Theatre yet, with the largest movie screens in the Tulsa area, 100 percent THX digital projection, 1940s diner and malt shop, full-service balcony and lounge (for guests 21 and older), director’s suite auditoriums, online ticket purchase and more.
GIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN OKLAHOMA GROUNDBREAKING Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma is breaking ground on a new state-of-the-art facility designed to embody the image and spirit of their organization. The two-story 31,000-square-foot building will be known as the Hardesty Leadership Center, thanks to a generous donation by the Hardesty Family Foundation, Inc. It will be visible from the Broken Arrow Expressway and will feature the green Girl Scout sash on the façade. The new facility will take approximately 16 months to build and is being built by Flintco. The architect on the project is Beck Design. The new building will double the size of the current facility near 51st and Lewis and includes office space, meeting rooms, retail store, volunteer space and cookie storage. The Hardesty Leadership Center is vital to the continued growth and development of Girl Scouting. With a presence of more than 100 years in Oklahoma, the council has both traditional programs as well as programs for underserved girls. Their diverse programs range from personal development, decision-making and leadership skills to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), healthy living and financial literacy. Their mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. 10

ARABIAN & HALF-ARABIAN U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HORSE SHOW The U.S. National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show once again brought the best Arabian horses in the industry right to Tulsa’s doorstep in October. This prestigious event offered Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses and both their amateur and professional exhibitors the opportunity to compete in a variety of classes and divisions. Held at Expo Square, this event is the Arabian Horse Association’s (AHA) most prestigious North American championship in the Arabian show horse industry. It brings more than 1,700 horses and 1,800 exhibitors to the city of Tulsa. With most exhibitors lodging, eating and refueling within the Tulsa metro, the show’s economic impact for the city comes close to $40 million.
DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION’S BUDDY WALK The Down Syndrome Association of Tulsa (DSAT) hosted its 12th Annual Buddy Walk in October at Union Public School’s Central Park. The walk featured free fun for the entire family including pony rides, inflatables, carnival games, Safari Joe, and live music. Also on hand were food trucks, sky divers and local mascots including Ronald McDonald. Started in 2003 with attendance of 200 people, this year’s Buddy Walk included 6,000 participants joining in the festivities. Over the last 11 years, the Tulsa Buddy Walk has raised more than $550,000 to support Down syndrome in Tulsa and its surrounding communities. The money raised is used to finance scholarships for families to attend local and national seminars, provide new parent packets, educate the medical community and sponsor special events throughout the year so that individuals with Down syndrome can come together and celebrate.
UNCORKING THE CURE FOR MS The National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosted the 13th Annual Uncorking the Cure for MS wine tasting and auction in old Hollywood style. The event featured guest speakers, including Dr. Gabriel Pardo, a neurologist and neuro-ophthalmologist committed to the understanding and management of multiple sclerosis. The event’s live and silent auctions included unique pieces. Lambrusco’s to Go catered the event.

ope, health and healing. For nearly a century, Hillcrest Medical Center has been providing just that for the people of Tulsa and surrounding communities. And in a time when many hospitals are consolidating or eliminating services, Chief Operating Officer Devon Hyde says Hillcrest is continuing to grow. The medical campus, located at 11th and Utica, is already home to centers of excellence that include the Oklahoma Heart Institute; the region’s only burn center, Alexander Burn Center; Peggy V. Helmerich Women’s Health Center; Kaiser Rehabilitation Center; The Hillcrest Center for Diabetes Management; the latest technology for the treatment of cancer – Oklahoma CyberKnife; and the Oklahoma Spine & Orthopedic Institute. Now, it is about to open a new emergency room. “It’s long overdue,” says Hyde. “We currently receive more than 47,000 visits a year in what is functionally a 19-bed emergency department, with six bays for minor care.” Complicating matters has been the fact that within the last few years, the size of today’s ambulances has increased to the point where they no longer fit the current emergency center’s driveway. “Upgrades to onboard ambulance technology have resulted in larger vehicles, which has forced Emergency Medical Technicians to unload patients in an open area, unprotected from the elements,” Hyde says. “Having served as an EMT and on an ambulance squad in the past, I can attest to the dissatisfaction for both the patient and provider in having to do so.” But all that is about to change. In mid-November, Hillcrest Medical Center will open the doors of its new 30,000-square-foot emergency care center with
37 beds and a fully covered driveway that can simultaneously accommodate up to eight ambulances. The center, which is nearly three times the size of the existing emergency facility, is designed to provide greater flexibility for treating all types of emergent and non-emergent conditions. It will also have a dedicated CT machine allowing for faster diagnostic testing. Recognizing the stress of an emergency room visit, the center has also been designed with comfortable waiting areas and will offer free valet parking for both patient and visitor convenience. “The Emergency Center at Hillcrest provides the tools, technology and conveniences that will allow our physicians to deliver the level of excellence they demand in patient care, comfort and privacy,” says Hyde. “Our goal is to be the emergency center of choice in Tulsa, and with this new facility, we believe we will be.” Hillcrest Medical Center will host a community-wide open house at the new facility on November 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., two days prior to opening for service, a gathering Hyde looks forward to with anticipation. “We are excited as an organization to continue our growth and service to the community. It’s one more step along our path of providing hope, health and healing for those in our care. One more step in moving Hillcrest Medical Center and the entire Hillcrest Healthcare System to the next level.” The Emergency Center at Hillcrest 1125 S Trenton Avenue, on the Hillcrest Medical Center campus, Tulsa Community-wide Open House: November 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. November 2014 | Tulsa Lifestyle

Williams Route 66 Marathon Celebrating the Mother Road, No Matter the Distance Article Ali Barnes | Photography Chris Barnes
T
o many, autumn is the season of football, or hunting, or pumpkin spice-flavored you-name-it. But to more and more Tulsans, our temperate climate means lacing up the sneakers and tearing up the pavement: it’s running season. Runners and walkers can take advantage of the pristine Oklahoma temperatures by taking their pick of area races on any given weekend, not so much for competition as camaraderie. For many runners, the culmination of the fall running season is the Williams Route 66 Marathon, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma. The 26.2-mile race, held in Tulsa on Sunday, November 23, is not the only event of this festival-like weekend. Starting Friday, a Health, Fitness and Sustainability Expo at the Cox Business Center features national and local vendors and is free to the public to shop for gift items. On Saturday, the family friendly 5k (3.1 miles) and 1-Mile Fun Run warm up the crowd before the entertaining Mascot Dash, a race between area mascots in full costume. On Marathon Sunday, participants can run the full or half marathon (13.1 miles) or split the marathon with a relay team, where each member runs about 5.6 miles. If a little extra motivation is needed to get you off the couch, Williams Route 66 Marathon features a Charity Challenge, where participants can earn a free entry by raising money for one of many local charities, including Community Food Bank, Folds of Honor Foundation, JDRF, United Way and Tulsa Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Giving back is one of the ways this race means so much to the Tulsa community. Entertainment venues throughout the course contribute to the festivities of the Williams Route 66 Marathon. Finish-line spectators may even think they are attending a free music festival,
featuring local bands and a fun finish line atmosphere at Guthrie Green in the award award-winning Brady Arts District. Chris Lieberman and Kim Hann, race executive director and assistant executive director, know how to throw a good party, as evidenced by the couple’s creation of Tulsa’s Center of the Universe Festival, a three-day music bash in July. Their efforts for the marathon combine their love for Tulsa, music, running and good times. “Route 66 Marathon is one of my favorites because it is an extremely organized race that also has a laid-back and fun atmosphere; everyone feels welcome and has fun here,” says Katie Kramer, who won last year’s marathon. The community is also encouraged to volunteer, which is a great way to get involved without the hours and months of training. “Plus, volunteers can earn some great swag,” says Hann. “Every volunteer will receive a t-shirt, a commemorative coin, and an invitation to our Volunteer Thank You Party.” The Williams Route 66 Marathon is an event all should experience, even if they’ve never worn running shoes. In fact, you can enjoy the fun by walking down the block and cheering the runners, who appreciate creative

signs, outrageous costumes and loud cowbells. This year’s marathon course follows a different route than years past because of the exciting construction of The Gathering Place on Riverside. Hann is excited about the progress coming to Tulsa. “We won’t spend as much of the race on Riverside Drive because Tulsa is welcoming a world-class, game-changing addition to our community. When The Gathering Place is complete, it will be a park unlike any other. We can’t wait for it to be part of our course in the future,” says Hann. Among the unchanged qualities unique to this race is the Center of the Universe detour, a fan-favorite where volunteers dress up in costumes to run the extra one-third mile with the runners to the Tulsa landmark. “We wanted to showcase the iconic parts of downtown Tulsa, honor historic Route 66, and also change things up a bit for runners who run this marathon year after year,” says Hann. One feature that refreshes yearly is the medal that each finisher receives. Williams Route 66 Marathon is nationally lauded for having crave-worthy medals, each designed in homage to historic Route 66 and the cars that drove it. This year’s stunning medal is modeled after the luxurious Cadillac hood ornament featuring laurel leaves spinning (a one-of-a-kind design) around the classic Route 66 shield. Many marathoners choose their races based on the ‘cool factor’ of the medal, so the hardware brings runners from all over the nation to enjoy our city. A sense of community and a desire for excellence shape runners and our community alike. It is no wonder, then, that more and more Tulsans are running away with fall frenzy.

It’s very French to place accessories on the table in addition to flowers, so we added the ceramic fruits around the floral arrangement.” The serving utensils with antler handles are fun for the occasion and the layered tablecloths—a crewel-embroidered gray silk draped over another with wide stripes—

Cozy wicker chairs (also his grandmother’s) and two overlapped cowhide rugs further the natural theme of the room. The place settings include a handmade nametag for each of Evans’ grandchildren. effrey Evans Designs normally tackles Christmas decorating for about 15 clients each year, ranging from whole-house setups in multi-million dollar Tulsa homes to intimate settings in smaller residences. One of Evans’ clients has a 14-foot Christmas tree that gets adorned with more than 2,000 ornaments. As you can imagine, decorating that tree is quite the task! “We have a person who is paid just to unpack ornaments and get the wire hangers attached to speed up the process,” Evans explains. Although each year these decorating processes can be all-consuming and there are definitely tough deadlines, they thoroughly enjoy all of it. For more info visit JeffreyEvansDesign.com. Vitter’s Catering Try a twist for your holiday entertaining this year with distinctive Asian Fusion catering Article Lara Friend | Photography Dana Rene Portraits
F
or a mouthwatering sushi experience here in Tulsa, you’ve simply got to try Vitter’s Catering, located downtown. Owner Joshua Vitt holds the power to turn even a non-sushi eater into a die-hard fan. I’ve seen it happen, so get ready to be blown away! A graduate of the Florida Culinary Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida, and native Tulsan with more than 20 years’ experience in the food industry, Josh started out as a dishwasher when he was in high school and worked his way up. He decided to pursue his degree so he could fully advance in the culinary field. While training in Florida, Josh was able to develop his own master skills in Asian cuisine. “I had to train for over six months under a sushi master before I was able to serve the public,” explains Josh. “Asian Fusion is our specialty and not a lot of catering companies offer this here.” He also worked as a private corporate chef for several different companies. Josh now also owns and operates Sunray Bakery Café, also located in the Sunoco Building in downtown Tulsa. He began his businesses by doing private sushi/international parties out of his home and they have 20

grown so much that he now does them additionally out of his restaurant space. “We started doing these sushi dinners out of our home with some friends and it evolved to where we had to find a larger space,” says Josh. “But many of our clients who have experienced our sushi night still want us to come to their house for a private sushi party.” I was so fortunate to experience one of his recent sushi nights in his space at the Sunoco Building. He offers private invitation-only dinner parties monthly including sushi and international menus such as German, Mediterranean, Thai and Cajun. Theme dinners like luaus and crawfish boils onsite are also very popular. The sushi dinner I attended consisted of a seven-course tasting and included delicious spring rolls, edamame, fried beef, crab salad on shrimp toast, miso soup, a variety of sushi rolls and nigiri. A few of the items were plated and the rest were served family style. Everything I sampled was wonderful and I was very impressed with the quality and appearance of the food. “I fly all my fish in fresh from Hollywood Beach, Florida,” says Josh. He’s very busy during the holiday season and is gearing up for private parties.
“We put out a holiday menu the first of October for entertaining, and 90 percent of our parties are home parties. We do offer our space at Sunray Bakery Café for parties at a very reasonable cost of $5/person. Most service is dwindling with many catering companies, but we still offer full service at all of our events including delivery, setup, serving, breaking down, doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen. We have a standard holiday menu you can choose from, or we are open to any ideas you may have.” Josh is also very busy in the summer months with weddings, and he participates every year in the Tulsa Wedding Show at the Renaissance Hotel. He’s a member of the Tulsa Wedding Merchant group and has been on the Better Business Bureau’s honor roll four years in a row. Vitter’s Catering has grown considerably over the last few years and Josh now has an apprentice training under his wing. He continues to add staff to his crew, and he also partners with Mike Hobbs of Artisan Bakers for all of his pastry needs so he can concentrate on his main courses, which he prefers more than baking. With the holiday season quickly approaching, Vitter’s Catering will book up fast, so I definitely recommend you contact Josh for any of your entertaining needs for a truly unique and easily customized experience! Lara Friend, a dedicated wife and mother of two, is a culinary arts graduate from Oklahoma State Institute of Technology. She currently enjoys life as a homemaker and writer, and simply loves working with food.

Parting Thoughts
Home Real Home Words Myquillyn Smith
I
’m a creative. I pretend to be a designer. My entire job is to encourage women that they can create a beautiful, meaningful home. I’ve done it all wrong, but I’m learning that it’s really not about the stuff at all, even when making a home. If I want my home to be a place of connection, I’ll ask genuine questions and get to know the people in my home. If I want my home to be a safe place to make a mistake, I’ll lower my standards for myself first, be forgiving of my own mistakes, laugh at myself—and allow others to see that. If I want my home to be inspiring, I’ll pay attention to what inspires me. If I want my home to be real, I’ll learn to embrace the imperfect, find the beauty in the undone, the broken, the unkempt, the everydayness and the mess. If I want my home to be comfortable, I’ll first stop apologizing and focus on others
instead of myself. If I want my home to be a place of rest, I’ll consider my attitude and the tone I set when I am home. I’ll allow and plan for restful spaces. This is the kind of home and beauty we have to fight for. Anyone can put pretty stuff in a room. It takes intention to furnish a home with grace and rest and acceptance. I’m up for the challenge. I want to see past the worst and focus on the better. I want to search for the real beauty just waiting to be recognized. I want to make a home on purpose – with purpose. I’m making home a safe, inspiring and life-giving place so we can go out and be who we were created to be. The Joneses don’t need to be kept up with, and secretly, they are tired of setting the mythical standard. Homes are there to serve people, not the other way around.
May your home serve you and others so fully that it’s worn thin and beautiful in all the right places. Myquillyn Smith is a renowned author and blogger. Read her book, The Nesting Place: It Doesn’t Have to be Perfect to be Beautiful, or visit her blog, TheNester.com, for more inspiring words about home, and grace. Reprinted with permission.
