Men of Tulsa

BIXBY, BROKEN ARROW & JENKS

Men play a vital role in our lives. From building communities and important relationships to being role models for young people and an inspiration to others, men can make positive things happen. The Men of Tulsa are all around you; your brother, your co-worker, your friend, your dad. Since Father’s Day is in June, we tend to reflect upon the men that have made a difference in our lives. Looking back, I remember various people in my life that made an impact on who I am today. I’ll start with Mr. Parks, my high school art teacher. Because of him, I began my college career in communication design. I remember Mr. Heffley, another teacher who gave me an old Leica camera so I could take photography class. My one passion/ hobby today is taking pictures. My stepfather was strict, made you earn your way and gave life lessons. He had horses and told me he would give me a saddle after I learned to ride. To this day, I still remember him saying “who’s in charge, you or the horse?” My real dad was a retired Colonel whom I got to know better as a young adult. He was my mentor. I miss the weekly hour long phone call about life in general. My husband is the rock that keeps our relationship balanced. And there are our sons, young adults that represent those who will build communities and relationships, be role models for others and an inspiration to many.

WHISKEY FROM AROUND THE WORLD = THE PERFECT LIBATION

ARTICLE CHRIS VEDDA | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY

W

hiskey is a popular Father’s Day present, but how does one pick the perfect libation? Alcohol has had great influence on the development of the human civilization. With that being said, your father will have great influence on the whiskey you choose. Whiskeys have many variations, much like fathers do. Whether soft, aggressive, well rounded, sharp or mellow, there is destined to be a whiskey to match your father. Whiskey is made via distillation of fermented grain: first records of that process were found in the archeological digs of millennia BC Babylon and Mesopotamia. Through decades of perfecting the process of distillation, the Scottish soon became the worlds leader in production of quality whiskey. By the time the first written record of whiskey appeared in 1494, production and consumption of whiskey in Scotland had already reached mass appeal. Nowadays, great whiskey can be found throughout the world. No other whiskey has gained the title of a “Man’s Drink” like Scotch. With the aggressive and earthy quality that is brought about from the process of melding barley and water, the flavors are bold and sharp. Balvenie has great options for any Scotch drinker. Balvenie 12 Year Double Wood gets a lot of its character from maturing in oak casks and then finishing in sherry casks, lending to a nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry. Bourbon whiskey is made primarily from corn (at least 51%). Although it can technically be made anywhere in the U.S, it is associated with the state of Kentucky. It is always aged in new, charred oak barrels. Bourbon offers a complex profile often at a good value. Even the small batch and extra aged selections, while not cheap, are priced far below the high end selections of other specialty whiskeys

16

Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2016

like scotch. Woodford Reserve and Maker’s Mark are great examples of this, with having their standard offering and higher marks that intensify the complexity of flavors like oak, caramel and vanilla. In terms of soft and well rounded, you can find most Canadian whiskey is almost always a blend of whiskeys made from several different grains. It is normally lighter and smoother than other whiskeys which make it ideal for beginners. Forty Creek whiskey meets all of the standards for being an approachable Canadian whiskey for the novice drinker. Lastly, as the name implies, Irish whiskey comes only from Ireland. The most common styles are “single malt” and “blended.” Both are offered in ascending options of age such as 10yr, 15yr, etc. Unlike scotch, which is only distilled twice, Irish whiskeys are usually distilled three times giving them a smoother, softer texture. These are great sipping whiskeys, often characterized by a classic creamy, chocolate milk and vanilla finish. A perfect example of this is Jameson 12 Year. With being aged in Oloroso Sherry casks and seasoned bourbon barrels, this whiskey delivers robust notes of spice, sherry and toasted fruit that will appeal to the most demanding palate. You may or may not know what whiskey your father will enjoy, but rest assured that if you bring him a bottle of any whiskey, it will surely put a smile on his face. Happy Father’s Day to our proud fathers out there. Cheers!

Meandering walkways highlight the couple's inspiring landscape.

A quaint wooden bridge invites guests to experience peace and calm in the city.

Flowers and Philanthropy Voskuhl-Staab Family Tends a Midtown Garden Oasis while Growing the Community ARTICLE DEBRA LAIZURE PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY

A

lan Staab and Sharon Voskuhl have lived in the Forest Hills neighborhood near Utica Square for 28 years. And you can tell this couple truly enjoys each other's company. He beams and listens intently whenever she speaks and she waits for the right moment to finish his sentence when he searches for the right word. They met at the University of Oklahoma when they were pursuing their MBAs in chemical engineering. They married in 1987 and settled in Tulsa to raise their family. As the family grew, they looked for a larger home in the same area. Voskuhl had always loved the house a few blocks away from their first home but the price was always out of reach. But when it later listed for a lower price, they scooped it up. That was 23 years ago. In that time, they endured a lengthy two-story addition project and created a backyard oasis for their sons, Blaise, Zane, Alec, and foster son Mike'quan. Voskuhl says, "We thought it would be a great place for our boys to run the creek and have a great time. They love following the creek up to Lewis and always wanted to take a raft to the Arkansas River. They never did, but they are still talking about it and they're in their 20s!" The Tulsa Garden Club recently showcased the couple's private garden in its 66th annual garden tour. 18

Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2016

A statue of Mary welcomes guests to the garden with a relaxing water feature through the wrought iron gate entrance and into a sanctuary of chirping birds, grassy lawns, and a babbling creek. Cross over the quaint wooden bridge and you'll find yourself in an oasis miles away from the stress of the city. The home's antique brick facade serves as a lovely contrast to the bright chartreuse landscape, tall pine trees, and thoughtful plantings offering pops of color everywhere. They matched the stone creek wall with hardscapes to create walls, flower beds, custom spa, and multiple patios. The colonial-style gazebo with a massive native stone fireplace sits above the rolling garden like a sentinel. It has an intricate stone tile floor and a relaxing seating area including a cozy porch swing. Wildlife abounds including owls, fox, ducks, bunnies, and the occasional snake. The garden is a wonderful venue for outdoor parties and functions. "We've had a lot of prom photos taken in our backyard," says Staab. Investments in real estate and natural gas ventures have afforded the couple the opportunity to do what they really love—improve the community. Both are active on several boards and are passionate about education. They support the Vocal Music and Robotics programs at

Memorial High School and have been involved with Celebrate Cascia, Cascia Christmas Walk, Oktoberfest, Catholic Charities, and all areas of education including private and public schools. Last year, the couple donated money for a subscription for the first three years of the Sway Concussion Management Balance System to Tulsa Public Schools. The Sway system can diagnose a concussion on the spot with an iPad or iPhone. Steve Friebus, TPS athletic director, is responsible for the implementation of the program and it excited Voskuhl and Staab. "Even though we don't have kids in TPS now, the subscription will serve all the kids in sports at all Tulsa Public High Schools. They do a base line test at the beginning of the school year. If a student is hurt, they can take a test on the field to determine if they need to sit out. As parents, we thought it was a really great program," says Voskuhl. Staab is an original board member of San Miguel Tulsa. Opened in 2004, San Miguel works to close the education gap of middle school students that are far behind their grade level. "Four of the original 18 eighth graders have graduated from college, including one with an engineering degree from the University of Tulsa. Kids have potential—you just have to be able to find it and develop it," says Staab. "We are working on a new school called the Drexel Academy for kindergarten, first, and second grade. It will be a separate entity but will have some of the same advisors and financial sponsors. Work still needs to be done as far as location, but we hope to open it this fall."

Sharon Voskuhl and Alan Staab built the garden with their sons in mind.

Another project close to Staab's heart is the preservation of Oklahoma's small colleges, in particular, St. Gregory's Catholic University in Shawnee. The university is struggling to remain relevant and viable. Staab and other board members are developing a new strategic plan focused on nursing and potentially a new medical school. He says, "We are also partnering with the Pottawattamie tribe to offer a college opportunity for some of their members. Those strategic alliances with Catholic hospitals in the state and with the tribes will help St. Gregory's be around for another 100 years." With all that the couple has accomplished, Staab is stepping out into a new venture...politics. He will be the first to point out that he is a businessman, not a politician, but hopes if he becomes the State Senator for District 39, that his experience in business can make a difference in the State Capitol. So, how does this busy couple relax? They say they go to a lot of basketball games and take long walks in the neighborhood. And of course, there is the garden. A colonial style gazebo houses a stately stone fireplace and cozy porch swing. Crow Creek flows behind the Voskuhl-Staab property.

Stone elements were selected to match to the creek wall.

I’m an all-American kind of guy with an athletic build. I enjoy the likes of Tom Ford and Louboutin shoes to Saks, Macy’s and JC Penny’s. I am unique on my own and express my fashion choices on how I feel in my clothes. EGDORF: My style is classic with a little fun and flair. The classic suit is my basic work wardrobe with a colorful bow tie and pair of socks. Jeans with Pikolinos and a Tailorbyrd shirt are the norm for an evening out and about. I am never without my wedding band and my grandfather’s Scottish Rite ring. GUARDIOLA: It’s a suit paired with a remarkable tie. It’s important to dress the part because most of my days consist of meetings with community leaders to student assemblies. I gain fashion inspiration from various places but my favorite source now is Instagram. I follow #BestofMenStyle, #DapperMan and #MensLaw.

arm spread is 80 inches, so you can imagine how a regular shirt fits. I tend to pick up casual clothing and shoes at Dillard’s and Tailorbyrd (online). Suits come from Pinpoint Resource. GUARDIOLA: I hunt for interesting accessories and find gems at a few local shops like Echo Man of Tulsa, Nordstrom Rack and Saks.

TL: WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL ARENA?

GUARDIOLA: I believe in educating yourself on the issues that impact not just you but each Oklahoman. I am amazed when people say they are voting “the party line” but do not know if the policy, proposition or person is best for us. EGDORF: I think an obstacle we have nationally is that folks on opposite sides of the aisle are not listening to each other, much less working together. Approval of Vision Tulsa happened because our city counselors, county commissioners, mayor and others worked together until they had a package they could all support. KROTTINGER: We need real representatives of our communities who aren’t single

TL: TULSA IS A PLACE WHERE ENTREPRENEURS THRIVE. HAVE YOU CREATED A BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION? KROTTINGER: I believe in aiming high, staying grounded and following your heart while taking risks. My husband and I started a health marketing/biotech company eight years ago while also making investments in real estate downtown and revitalizing historic properties near Circle Cinema. We also produce film including documentaries and live entertainment including "A Very Sordid Wedding," starring Whoopie Goldberg and Leslie Jordan; and “Come From Away,” a musical coming to Broadway in 2017. GUARDIOLA: I started Guardiola Outreach this year, a non-profit serving as a link between the Hispanic population and organizations desiring to provide better services to the community and build relationships. As an entrepreneur, I enjoy participating in 1 Million Cups monthly events and Sooner Marketing’s kick starter program for website design.

TL: WHERE DO YOU SHOP?

From the writer - Many thanks to Hodges Bend

T

he Alzheimer’s Association® Oklahoma Chapter and Philbrook are celebrating The Longest Day® with an art event for the second year in a row. The Longest Day is a team event to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. Held annually on (or near) summer solstice, the all-day event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Last year, caregivers, family members and those with Alzheimer’s submitted personal stories about their journey with the disease and the effect it has had on them directly. Those stories were given to local artists, who created an art piece; interpreting the story they had been given. This year, on Sunday, June 19, a new group of artists will be given new stories and will create art from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. On this special day, which is also Father’s day, people visiting Philbrook for the event will have free admission, however they will be charged general admission if they would like to walk around the galleries and gardens. Throughout the day, there will be several special performances in the theater followed by and Alzheimer’s Association staff person speaking on Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body and 10 Ways to Love Your Brain. On The Longest Day, teams select an activity they love – or honor a caregiver, or someone living with or lost to the disease, by selecting his or her favorite hobby. It could be bowling, hiking, cooking, crafting – teams are only limited by their imagination.

he Artist’s perspective

A small glimpse of A small glimpse of Tom’s Story

Tom’s Story

Tom writes of the delicious smell of fresh popped popcorn, butter and brown sugar that would waft from his mom’s kitchen during the holidays when he was a child. A cherished memory until the recipe was lost. Many years later, the recipe was found again, bitter sweet, because it was also the year his mother was diagnosed with the early stages of dementia.

The Artist’s perspective Artist Aaron Rayner explained the color red, which is present in the void, personifies the memory and thoughts of the family. This color is directly linked and careens towards the center of the painting, where the popcorn is brought into focus - symbolizing the moments of clarity that allowed the recipe to be remembered and passed on to the surviving family members.

This painting is currently on display in the lobby of Premier Popcorn at 32nd and Harvard.

SlimGENEration DNA Weight Loss helped me find my true self again and I am so happy! It is very hard to write a short, sweet version of what you want to say when your life has been changed so much... I never had a weight problem growing up and was fortunate enough to be able to eat what I wanted without any exercise. After having my children and growing older, things began to shift and my weight started to go higher and higher each year. I tried numerous fad diets, weight loss shakes and pills through the years. I was always looking for that magic pill or holy grail of weight loss. Any weight loss "success" I had was never long term and I always ended up gaining back the weight I lost and much more. After seeing a friend and her transformation with SlimGENEration, I decided if I tried it, I would have nothing to lose but weight. My weight had gotten to an all time high, and every time I thought I wouldn't go any higher on the scale, I did. If I didn't do something now, who knows how much I could end up weighing? SlimGENEration has been one of the best things I have ever done in my life. I feel so empowered with the weight loss and gains in my health that I have had! I have more energy and I no longer carry the burden of feeling ashamed or embarrassed about how I look. I never have to be overweight again and I never will be again! ~ Sheila B.

Parting Thoughts

T N R BU T S A TO WORDS DEBRA LAIZURE

A

n English proverb says, "One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters." I couldn't agree more. My father was tall with wavy dark brown hair, steel blue eyes, and spoke with a Maine accent despite living in Oklahoma most of his adult life. Thanks to him, I know how to ride a motorcycle, start a campfire, and make the best jalapeùo cheese dip in the world. Father's Day was always one of my favorite holidays. It was the day where I got to spoil my dad as much as he spoiled me. We'd spend the day together doing whatever he wanted to do—which surprisingly always turned out to be something I wanted to do. 34

Tulsa Lifestyle | June 2016

I would make him a handmade Father's Day card and cook his favorite dinner. He's been gone for many years now but the tradition continues with my own family. Each year, my husband is treated to breakfast in bed. Our children get up early to make the special meal, which over the years has evolved from cereal and juice, to the ever favorite egg in a basket (where you cut a circle in a slice of bread and cook the egg inside), to omelets or pancakes. It is supposed to be a surprise but shouts of "No, that's not how you do it!" and the loud clanking of pots of pans makes sleeping in late nearly impossible.

FOR DAD After an hour or two, the expertly made breakfast, usually served cold and a little bit burned, arrives at his bedside with two smiling faces eager to explain who made what and to hear him exclaim how delicious everything tastes. Without hesitation, my husband digs into the charred, unrecognizable delicacies and cheerfully announces it's the best breakfast he has ever had. It's always a great start to Father's Day.
