Put a Book in Your Hand and a Smile on Your Face A
ugust brings a rush of excitement as children, teens and adults gear up for the season of going back to school. This may be the year that your student has a special teacher that will make a positive impact changing the way they see the world, view learning or decide on a career path. It could also be the year when a subject, class or activity brings out a hidden passion or talent and you can watch your child blossom. With the idea of school starting up again, we went back to basics and thought of a subject that one carries with them their through their whole life. Reading. As a baby we learn to read board books. You might say "Here is a duck." Then you could ask "What is the duck getting ready to do? What is he carrying?" "What color is the duck? How many feet does he have? Where is the color red?" You are teaching your child to count, about colors, shapes and building vocabulary as you go through the pages. Now you can ask your child to read the pages back to you and you'll hear "Here is the yellow duck. He has two feet. He is going swimming. He is carrying a red beach ball." That is the beginning of putting a book in your hand and a smile on your face.

Children who learn to enjoy books will become lifelong readers. Books can take you to places you've never been before, foreign lands, mystical worlds, a time of long ago. They can also teach you about various subjects; motivation, business, cooking and the list goes on. Growing up, I started reading the Bobbsy Twins and progressed to Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. I was going to be a detective, solve problems and catch the bad guys. Well I soon found my favorite authors and had to collect every title. When the kids were growing up, the house was filled with Usborne Children's Books. Children like familiarity with books, that's why they ask you to read the same book over and over. Usborne had a little duck hidden on the pages of some of their books so the kids would be excited when I brought a new book home so they could find the duck. It encouraged them to open a new book, to enjoy books and to read. And did you know the U.S. publisher for Usborne Books is located right here in Tulsa?

We hope you enjoy the stories in this issue that cover reading for adults and toys and books for kids. With the new school year, you may also want to plan a renovation to be finished in time for the holidays. After the kids go back to school and before the renovations begin, take the time to realx and put a book in your hand and a smile on your face.

Apothēke NEW PHARMACY PRESERVES THE PAST,

aleb Meacham is always in motion. The marathon runner and innate go-getter was an All-State football player at Sapulpa High School, bought his first pharmacy nine months after he graduated from OU-Tulsa, and now at age 32, is opening his second location on Cherry Street. Apothēke, Greek for pharmacy, is an independent pharmacy, compounding lab, and retail store. Meacham, owner and pharmacist, chose the old McKee Sewing Center building because of its location and the area's natural traffic flow. It has easy access off the Broken Arrow expressway and is within a mile of St. John Medical Center, Hillcrest Medical Center, and numerous medical offices. In fact, a new women's health clinic is opening in the space next door. RESPECTING THE PAST
Meacham chose the iconic McKee Sewing Center building for the location, but also as a way to preserve the architectural style of the neighborhood. "The building was empty for 10 years. It's taken a lot to restore it and bring it back up to code. Honestly, it would have been cheaper and easier to knock it down and start from scratch, but they don't make buildings like this anymore," he says. "We found many
treasures throughout the construction process. For instance, we found nails shaped like mini railroad spikes reclaimed from the building's 100 year old wood. And we found a sweet inscription in the concrete about the former owner that reads, 'Clara McKee, f irst lady of sewing machines' in the back parking lot." Meacham has taken painstaking steps to tie together the original 1920s design of exposed antique brick and open duct work with a clean, modern interior with stained concrete floors, granite counter tops, and colorful accent walls. Instead of throwing away the original McKee Sewing Center sign which has adorned the building for decades, Meacham had it restored to its former glory and placed next to his new store sign. In addition, he commissioned a local artist to build an old-fashioned soda machine as a nod to the past when drug stores had soda fountains.

COMPOUNDING LAB
FREE VITAMINS, FREE DELIVERY
So, why is compounding important? Meacham says, "Because everybody is different. Prescription drugs are mass produced for the average person. However, most people aren’t 'average'. Some people can't have dyes, some are intolerant to gluten, while others have lactose allergies. In fact, lactose is used in many medicines as fillers. Compounding serves those needs." He explains that individuality is especially important in hormone replacement therapy. As we age, our hormone levels go down and aren't going to get any higher by themselves. A man in his early 30s will need a different formula than one in their 60s. Women have various reasons for low hormone levels. Rather than taking a medication produced for the “average” woman, the Apothēke pharmacists can mix a few ingredients and restore a woman's hormone level. "Apothēke offers consultation services and will collaborate with your physician to develop a customized therapy plan. It might have to be periodically adjusted, but that's what the patient-pharmacist-doctor relationship is for," says Meacham.
The pharmacy will include a retail store with over-the-counter medicines such as vitamin supplements, allergy medicines, medical supplies, and first aid supplies. They will offer gifts, like licensed Golden Hurricane gear, kitschy chef aprons, and more. Local artists are welcome to display and sell their art, which will be rotated every couple of months. Apothēke offers a free monthly supply of vitamins to children, seniors, and expectant mothers. Those interested can sign up for the program and will receive a month's worth of free vitamins. Meacham is a strong advocate of education and partners with the Tulsa Public Schools. "My dad has been a teacher at Lanier Elementary School for more than 20 years. Providing free vitamins is a simple way to educate the public and create a healthcare community. It's just something I want to do," says Meacham. The pharmacy also provides free delivery. He says, "It's tough for some folks to get around unless they have family or additional support, so it's something we can offer the community. It's a small thing to us, but could mean the world to someone else." Apothēke will have a grand opening celebration in August. For more information, call 918-728-6420 or visit ApothekeRX.com. LEARNING THROUGH PLAY EDUCATIONAL TOYS AND BOOKS KEEP CHILDREN'S MINDS ACTIVE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
E
ARTICLE ROBERT EVATT | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY
ven if your child is in the best school around, it’s always a good idea to keep them learning long after the final bell rings. Fortunately, it’s easy to make learning fun for kids in Tulsa. Ryan McAdams, founder of Tulsa Toy Depot at 101st Street and Sheridan Road, said he felt it was important to incorporate educational toys into his stock, along with 1,500 titles in the store’s book section. “Studies show that reading with a real, paper book rather than a tablet helps kids learn faster,” he said. With that in mind, we asked McAdams to pick out a few of his favorite educational toys and books that can help kids learn, create and dream.
THINKFUN MATH DICE, $5.99
WORDTEASERS, $14.95
Usually children’s books are sold one at a time, but Bob Books are sold as a set. This increasingly popular series is written with very simple language to appeal with kids who are just starting to learn to read, though the words are carefully chosen so that readers can grasp core sounds in the phonics method. Each Bob Books set revolves around a specific theme, such as basic letter pattern recognition, sounds throughout the alphabet and skill building. For instance, the first book in the Beginning Readers set features just the letters M, A, T and S, and the word On.
These colorful boxes are filled with flash cards featuring conversation starters that can help kids of all ages build their vocabulary and think critically at the same time. For instance, cards in the set meant for younger children might ask “What makes someone a good winner?” The Wordteasers set for middle-schoolers includes cards such as “Who is the most reliable person you know?” Not only will they challenge your child to recognize the meaning of the word “reliable,” they’ll also need to put that word to use with examples from their own life. 16

You don’t have to plow through pre-written problems in order to get kids fired up about math. With Math Dice, number problems can be turned into an unpredictable game that will keep them on their toes. For each round, you’ll first roll the two white 12-sided dice and multiply them to get a target number. Then, roll the three six-sided dice. To get that total as close to the target as possible, you can add, subtract, multiply or divide. If you’re really good, you can use powers -- two to the third power is two multiplied by two multiplied by two equalling eight, for example. SCHOLASTIC BOB BOOKS, $16.99

USBORNE FIRST THOUSAND WORDS SERIES, $12.99
This ongoing series helps children build up their vocabulary by incorporating a solid 1,000 words into colorful scenes. Not only does this help with reading and spelling, it also contains an index to make practice easier. What separates out First Thousand Words from other book series is the fact that this book is translated into an array of languages. Now English speakers have an easy frame of reference for words in Spanish, Hebrew, Japanese or Latin, just to name a few of the languages available. SCHOLASTIC WIPE CLEAN WORKBOOKS, $9.99
THE CRAZY SCIENTIST LAB -- BUBBLES AND
Though workbooks are a great way to entertain and educate children, there’s just one problem -- if the workbook is written in once, it’s hard if not impossible to use again. Scholastic knows children can be messy, and their solution was to create workbooks that can be easily erased and used again. To make things as easy as possible, each Wipe Clean Workbook comes with its own pen. With a variety of topics aimed at early learners, each one can be re-used until your child has truly mastered a topic.

Who says science experiments have to wait until children are older? The Crazy Scientist series is geared toward the younger set, with hands-on activities that are a snap for kids to grasp but still convey basic scientific concepts. The Bubbles and Foam set takes an almost universal childhood pastime and gives it a scientific twist. They’ll start with noticing how to create a membrane from soap, then find ways to chain them together, hold a bubble without popping it and even paint with foam.

Booksmart Tulsa: ARTICLE LOUANN BUHLINGER | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY & PROVIDED
I
n the last seven years, Tulsa has become a book lover’s paradise due in large part to Jeff Martin, founder of Booksmart Tulsa. It began in 2009 when Jeff created a “BookPub” in Tulsa in order to make his cultural life, and that of the surrounding community, more complete. He held the book club’s first meeting at McNellie’s Public House expecting a few dozen people. Instead, more than 300 eager participants showed up and Martin knew he had a great concept. “What began as a hobby transformed into a major endeavor,” says Martin. Booksmart quickly morphed from a very large book club into one-of-a-kind literary events featuring well-known authors for talks and book signings. “We get writers here through publisher partnerships, my relationships with authors and recommendations from writers who have come for our events and then pass the word on to their colleagues,” says Martin. Martin credits Dwelling Spaces owner, Mary Beth Babcock, for helping the organization get off of the ground through generating new ideas and providing event space. Some of the more well-known authors who have visited Tulsa include David Sedaris, Elizabeth Gilbert, Salman Rushdie and Stephen King. Booksmart events featuring ‘big name’ authors draw between 1,000-2,000 people. Events with a fresh, young novelist with a new buzz-worthy book attract 50-100 people. Martin says, “Each event is special in its own way. Each is a unique curated experience. Not just a talk. Not just a book signing. The attention to detail is what really makes Booksmart stand out on a regional and national level. It’s unique.” The kind of vision and work to grow Booksmart from a book club to attracting to the top echelon of authors in six years is credited to Martin’s tenacity and long range vision. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without people like Teresa Miller of the Oklahoma Center for Poets & Writers and Francine Ringold, former editor of the Nimrod Journal, blazing a trail,” says Martin. “In the early days we begged authors to come to Tulsa and pounded the pavement reaching out to local hotels for room donations, to venues for free meeting space and to airlines for free miles.” Once Martin created an identity for Booksmart, persuading authors to come to Tulsa has become easier because of the successful track record of the organization and Tulsans’ passionate appetite for all things literary. Events scheduled for the next three months include CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin, mega-bestselling thriller writer Karin Slaughter, Jodi Picoult and a can’t-miss kids event with Captain Underpants author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey. Most events are free and open to all with no RSVP required. Some events require the purchase of a book for two seats and more can be found on the website at booksmarttulsa.com.
Artists Rendering of Magic City Books
With the success of Booksmart, Jeff and a host of others formed the Tulsa Literary Coalition (TLC) in 2015, a 5013C non-profit led by Executive Director Cindy Hulsey, formerly of the Tulsa City-County Library. Martin serves as the board president. “Cindy is my partner in crime for this next phase of our literary adventure and I can’t imagine anyone I’d rather have at the helm. We have several additional people on the board and an outstanding board of advisors including authors Ann Patchett, Jonathan Franzen and Nancy Pearl,” says Martin. The mission of the TLC is to keep the love of books and reading alive. With the closing of Steve’s Sundries in Midtown Tulsa a few years ago, Martin and the TLC realized the need for a new independent bookstore and created the concept of Magic City Books. With the help of the George Kaiser Family Foundation providing a location, Magic City will open in the Brady District in early 2017 at the corner of Archer and Detroit. This will be no ordinary book store but a “Third Place” – a place where people congregate other than work or home. As a project of the TLC, the book store will indeed be a magic space full of books and places to meet friends for a coffee or a glass of wine. Martin has surely created a community for Tulsans who love to read and connect. “My dream is to get Magic City Books established and then perhaps in 2020, attempt a weekend-long book festival with dozens of authors, vendors, food and music.” When asked what drives him to achieve so much, Martin said, “It’s hard to know why your interests go a certain way. I guess I’ve always been endlessly curious. And the world of books was always the best place to quench that thirst. I like being in the world of ideas. I always have.” If Martin could choose his ideal “Third Place,” it would most likely be a quaint get-together at Magic City Books discussing the issues of the day with “Ernest Hemingway, Julia Child and Larry David. Now that sounds interesting!” August 2016 | Tulsa Lifestyle

Renovate & Refine
Remodeling KITCHEN
PLAN NOW FOR HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING
ARTICLE STUART HARLE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he pressures of kitchen remodeling can be overwhelming combined with the fact that it is one of the most challenging and expensive renovation projects a homeowner can tackle. But with good planning and partnering with an experienced designer and craftsmen can take away the worry and fears to come up with a kitchen that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. As with any renovation, planning is important, it is the foundation of any successful project. Planning starts out with a realistic budget by determining the wants and the needs of the homeowner and the amount of money the homeowner is willing to invest in the home. Depending on the size of the budget will then determine the overall scope of the project, whether it will be just an update or an overall complete renovation. Now that the budget is established, the scope of the project is determined. If working with a limited budget, then perhaps the countertops are replaced with new granite or quartz, a new tile backsplash and new plumbing fixtures are included. This can make a worn and tired kitchen look new and more appealing. If the current layout isn’t working and if the budget allows for a complete renovation, then new cabinetry is specified and a new layout is designed, appliances selected, plumbing fixtures specified and materials and finishes including floors, countertops and backsplash are chosen. Then when all of the ingredients for your new kitchen are determined, then a schedule is created outlining all of the necessary steps of the renovation, and who will be doing what and when. A typical update can be as short as two weeks and a major renovation can last between eight to twelve weeks. Just be prepared for the inconvenience during this stage as you will be without a functioning kitchen. This gives a great excuse to eat out more often or grill on the patio. When it is all completed you have improved the functionality of your kitchen and increased the value of your home.

Celebrating 20 YEARS OF WESTERN DAYS SAINT SIMEON’S REFLECTS ON TWO DECADES OF FUNDRAISING
ARTICLE LINDSAY MORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY
T
his year, Saint Simeon’s Senior Community celebrates 20 years of a fundraiser that has become a tradition for many Tulsa families: Western Days. Over the past two decades, this Western-themed event has raised funds for several special projects, such as memory center renovations and a new physical therapy room, and has supported the operations of Saint Simeon’s, including helping to provide a highly trained and experienced nursing team, magnificently landscaped courtyards, an on-site therapy dog and even a family of colorful peacocks. Western Days 2016: Decades of Compassion will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Cox Business Center. The event will aptly celebrate the compassionate care that has been the hallmark of Saint Simeon’s, a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, over the past 56 years. Event Chairs Phyllis and George Dotson chose the theme “Decades of Compassion” for this year’s event. “’Decades of Compassion’ is the hallmark of Saint Simeon’s, so it’s a very fitting theme for this year’s Western Days,” said Phyllis Dotson. “George and I have witnessed since the beginning of our involvement with Saint Simeon’s that compassion – the ultimate love – is a calling from staff members and Trustees so that the Residents in the eventide of their lives and their families are totally supported and feel outstanding care.” Western Days has thrived over the years thanks to the support of committed families. “We’ll often have three generations of family members at Western Days – the Residents, their children and grandchildren,” said Phyllis Dotson. Western Days has grown from a couple hundred people gathered under a tent in the Saint Simeon’s parking lot to an event that draws over 700 people annually. In 2009, Western Days outgrew the Saint Simeon’s grounds and relocated to Central Park Hall at EXPO Square. This year, attendees of Western Days look forward to a new venue: Cox Business Center. “Western Days has grown because it’s a casual Western celebration that appeals to a broad spectrum of incredibly loyal attendees who love Saint Simeon’s,” Phyllis 24

Western Days 2016: Decades of Compassion Tuesday, Sept. 13 Silent Auction starts at 6 p.m.; Dinner starts at 7 p.m. Cox Business Center 100 Civic Center, Tulsa Individual tickets are $75. Dotson said. “We now have nearly 100 volunteers who help make the event a big success.” Phyllis and George Dotson are joined by Mandy and Blake Atkins, Executive ViceChairman of the Saint Simeon’s Home Board of Trustees, who are serving as Patron Chairs. Lisa and Tom Schooley, Saint Simeon’s Trustee, are serving as Auction Chairs. This year, Western Days will celebrate two special people as Honorary Chairs. The Right Rev. Dr. Edward J. Konieczny will be celebrated for 10 years as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. Saint Simeon’s is also honoring him for his leadership as Chairman of the Board for Saint Simeon’s Home and Foundation. Lindsay Hurley Fick will also be celebrated for her decade as President and CEO of Saint Simeon’s. This year, the Pioneer Spirit Award will be presented to Saint Simeon’s beloved Resident John Brooks Walton. Walton is known as Tulsa’s most famous living architect and is author of several books, including One Hundred Historic Tulsa Homes. Most recently, Walton’s skill of painting has been a growing passion, and dozens of his paintings line the walls of his apartment and a dining room at Saint Simeon’s. Western Days 2016: Decades of Compassion will feature a marvelous Silent Auction, as well as the always entertaining Live Auction. The evening will include a delicious dinner and the traditional General Store stocked with handmade items from Saint Simeon’s Residents, staff and volunteers. “The staff is involved by making baked goods and other items, and the Residents work year-round to make crafts for the General Store,” said Phyllis Dotson. “We appreciate that the Residents and staff are contributing to the success of Western Days.” Saint Simeon’s has captured the hearts of hundreds of Tulsa families over the years. Nestled on 50 acres in Tulsa four miles from downtown, Saint Simeon’s boasts incredible wildlife and landscaping. Year round, the 180 Residents of Saint Simeon’s can enjoy watching peafowl, Simone the Golden Retriever, turtles and koi in the courtyards. Additionally, Saint Simeon’s title as a continuing care retirement community means that its residents have access to every level of care – Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Nursing Care and Skilled Nursing. “Exciting plans are underway for Western Days 2016, and this promises to be our best event yet,” Phyllis Dotson said.

Parting Thoughts
Spend the Summer Reading WORDS DEBRA LAIZURE
I
remember spending the summers at my grandparents' cabin on the lake in Maine. I would choose a classic novel from their bookcase with the goal of finishing it before the week was out. Cuddling up with a book like Moby Dick made my imagination go wild wondering if there were any white whales in our lake. The cabin didn't have any electricity or cell phone service. Just a gas generator to light up the living room long enough in the evening to finish off a chapter or two and play a few games of Yahtzee. When the generator ran dry, it was time for bed. And oh, the excitement when the sun came up so I could read what happened next to Captain Ahab! I'm probably dating myself, but I grew up in the 70s before the handheld technology revolution. But still yet, I associate reading a book with vacations and sultry, quiet evenings sipping lemonade. And I always buy a new book to enjoy on the airplane flight, road trip, or beach. Don't get me wrong, I'm the queen of Facebook and a regular contributor to TripAdvisor. I keep my iPad close and my Smartphone even closer. But nothing irks me more than watching a family at a restaurant head first into their electronic devices. My family took a trip earlier this year and hiked several canyons. The scenery was breathtaking, the air was fresh, and we were exploring places we had never seen before. But everywhere we looked we saw children playing video games on phones and watching videos from the back seats of their parents' minivan, oblivious to nature's glory just inches from their electronic screens. Summer is winding down and school will be starting soon. It's the perfect time to settle in with a good read before reality sets in. Visit a local bookstore and buy a book. Forget the Kindle and get a real book with pages that you can turn. Or visit a library and rent several books. I guarantee it will take you back to your childhood when you pass through the doors and get a whiff of all that paper. Better yet, ask to borrow a book from a friend. This is a great tip if it's been a while and you don't know where to begin. It's also a ploy to get you started since you will eventually need to return the book. In this world where binge-watching a Netflix series has become the norm, try putting down the remote and Smartphone and pick up a book. Read at your own pace, take naps along the way, and open up your mind better than any film or video game can do. I promise, you won't regret it.
