BIXBY, BROKEN ARROW & JENKS
I
've had dogs my entire adult life and the first little Scotty led to the addition of another Scotty and then ohhh, that cute little puppy that someone brought to work just had to come home with me. It was a mix of brown lab and pit bull. Cocoa. Honestly I never heard of a pit until I moved to Oklahoma. People would say "that's a pit" and I would say "no it's a brown lab". Then they would say well it looks like a pit and I would look at Cocoa and say no it looks like a dog. Cocoa was our protector. If a salesman knocked on the door, they were gone the minute they saw her. She knew when to show her teeth and make the hair on her back stand up but she also enjoyed being dressed up, wearing purses around her neck, having her nails painted, and whatever else the kids could think of. She was with us 17 years. My daughter had volunteered for a Fur Ball once and I knew it was coming up so I called and asked for information for the magazine. That's how I became involved with Oklahoma Alliance for Animals. That phone call led to me offering to help with the Fur Ball and from there, well I can't remember a world where you didn't help animals 10 to 30 hours a week. Along the way, I have met some of the most amazing, giving people. Besides helping OAA with Woofstock and Rock & Rescue, I started taking pictures each week of animals for the Broken Arrow shelter and posting them online to find their homes or a rescue which eventually led to a whole new facebook page to save Broken Arrow animals. A handful of us work together trying to save the animals at the shelter from being put down but we are just a tiny part of the whole picture. We network with 100's of rescues all over Oklahoma and the country and people that transfer animals from one state to another. There is a Broken Arrow dog that works with inmates, another that is the nursing home resident dog, and a beautiful black shepherd that was never claimed who is now with Operation K9. We get updates with pictures of happy furbabies in their homes. It will be a great day when there aren't any abandoned, abused, lost or surrendered animals at the shelter.

a mother’s intuition. Jessica had always felt that something just wasn’t right with her heart. Other doctors told her that her rapid heartbeat could be blamed on anxiety or a panic attack. However, the heart rhythm specialists at Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI) knew better. They correctly diagnosed Jessica’s condition as SVT (supraventricular tachycardia), caused by an extra electrical pathway in the heart. So, when her daughter Bridie began to complain about the same feelings, Jessica knew exactly how to help. Thanks to the specialists at OHI, Jessica and Bridie’s hearts, and lives, are back in rhythm. NEW! TULSA LIFESTYLE WEB CONTEST! Tulsa Lifestyle will begin featuring exclusive website contests that will be highlighted here so you can enter to win. In September, the Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa is offering a chance to win $100 worth of NEOCUTIS MPC products or EltaMD Sunscreens.
Performing Arts Center for a limited engagement of eight performances only September 13-18. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. rad Rieschick might be called audacious and vigorous. That’s because he brings a fresh flair and flavor to well-liked Juniper Third Street Bistro in downtown Tulsa. Brad’s unique style joins culinary artistry with unrestricted imagination as he creates dishes that excite loyal Juniper patrons as well as new guests of all ages and backgrounds. “I don’t like to be sedentary so I create a new menu every week using in-season, fresh and locally grown ingredients,” says Brad. Moving into the fall, Brad is preparing dishes using a variety of game meats, quail and gooseberries for the specials menu. “We use seasonal ingredients that are fresh and grown locally. We have great relationships with many of the areas growers which results in bringing the best to the restaurant.” Brad and the team of cooks also grow their own herbs in the alleyway next to the restaurant. “We produce just over 90 percent of the herbs we need for our recipes here,” says Brad. You can peek just outside of the restaurants’ side door to see and smell the aromatic plants which are cultivated weekly. Chef Brad grew up in the Kansas City area where he learned to cook from his family and through a series of jobs in his youth. After earning his certification by the American Culinary Federation, he went on to work at many of the top restaurants in the Kansas City area including Justus Drugstore, Urban Table, Gram and Dun, Columbus Park Ramen Shop, and for James Beard Award Winning Chef, Colby Garrelts, at Rye. Brad also spent six months traveling across the nation to a different city each week partnering with different Chefs for popup dinners through New Orleans based company, Dinner Lab. Brad’s greatest cooking influence while growing up was Julia Child. His current influences are Thomas Keller who owns The French Laundry in Napa Valley, and Paul Liebrandt who co-owns Corton restaurant in New York. “There are so many talented chefs, but these guys are relentlessly meticulous with their technique,” says Brad. “Being a chef is a tough job. It requires standing on your feet 60-70 hours a week in a hot kitchen but I love the camaraderie of working with the other cooks. In fact, being a cook is the closest I will ever get to being a pirate.” And, you can see Juniper’s ‘pirate’ Brad, complete with red hair and tats, through the open window to the kitchen. Juniper has an open, comfortable and light environment designed and constructed by proprietor Chef Justin Thompson.

The well-appointed bar offers its own unique and tasty menu created by Chef Brad. “I love to make comfort food and recommend that everyone try the Beef Stroganoff bar plate made with housemade pappardelle, local mushrooms, white wine and local herbs.” He also recommends Juniper’s house-made Limoncello Bread Pudding and “Chupete,” a signature drink made with serrano-infused vodka, lime, agave and Tajin spice. 46 YEARS OF CARING FOR PETS VETERINARIAN DR. D.C. SMITH CONTINUES HIS WORK AT RIVER TRAIL ANIMAL HOSPITAL & PET LODGE
ARTICLE ROBERT EVATT | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY
T
he last 46 years has brought sweeping change to veterinary science and the treatment of pets. But for all the evolution, one aspect has remained constant -- Dr. D.C. Smith. Since 1970, this Tulsa vet has treated thousands of animals in need, as well as the owners who view Dr. Smith’s patients as parts of their families. “As a vet, you not only have to have love for the animal, you have to love people,” Dr. Smith said. “Helping out people by taking care of their pets is what it’s all about.” Today, Dr. Smith is one of the seven veterinarians at River Trail Animal Hospital & Pet Lodge at 12630 S. Memorial Drive, and he’s still glad to welcome new generations of animal lovers. Dr. Smith developed his empathy for animals at an early age, as he grew up on a farm in Cherokee, Oklahoma. He loved to help his dad take care of cows and pigs -- even when things got a little messy. “When I was eight, my father woke me up in the middle of the night to help a sow have babies, since I had such small arms back then,” he said. “My dad took such good care of them, each sow had their own little hut.” Dr. Smith decided he wanted to be a veterinarian at a very young age. He got his degree from Oklahoma State University and undertook an internship from Colorado State University. Though he also does general practitioner work, Dr. Smith’s special interest is in pet surgery and eye disorders. He’s been a frequent speaker on canine disk disease and ophthalmology, and was one of the founders of the Animal Emergency Center, which provides 24-hour care. Dr. Smith was also one of the two Oklahoma delegates to the American Veterinary Medicine Association for 20 years. 14
Tulsa Lifestyle | September 2016
Though the honor he’s most proud of is the Dr. D.C. Smith Endowment Scholarship, which is awarded to two veterinary students at OSU each year. The scholarship was founded by Jon and Dee Dee Stuart, whose Bernese Mountain Dog Millie was a longtime patient of Dr. Smith’s. The two established the scholarship after they were impressed by the hip replacement surgery Millie received at OSU. Over his 46 years in practice, Dr. Smith has kept up with sweeping changes in veterinary medicine. For instance, he’s glad to see the arrival of ultrasound imagers and endoscopes -- the same type used on humans -- in order to make it easier to diagnose problems. “The newer equipment means that pets we once had to do exploratory surgery on no longer need it,” he said. Dr. Smith said that vets are also seeing less issues with traumatic injuries than he did when he began work in 1970. Part of it is due to leash laws that have dramatically cut down on the number of dogs hit by cars, though it’s also due to many owners taking better care of their pets. “Pets are even more important today to owners,” he said. “They’re a unique part of the family.” Dr. Smith said he believes many owners are being more prompt about bringing their pets in when they show worrying symptoms, such as a loss of appetite or a change in their coats. Still, he said he’s saddened that there’s still a significant number of dog owners who neglect their pets or leave them permanently chained up in their yards. Though he loves animals, Dr. Smith said he’s also driven by the desire to help people. “Today, we emphasize the bond between pets and people,” he said. “We’ve really done a lot through the years to help people see the bond.” Dr. Smith has his own animal companion, a schnauzer named Zoe.
“AS A VET, YOU NOT ONLY HAVE TO HAVE LOVE FOR THE ANIMAL, YOU HAVE TO LOVE PEOPLE,” DR. SMITH SAID. “HELPING OUT PEOPLE BY TAKING CARE OF THEIR PETS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT.” The Dr. D.C. Smith Endowment Scholarship is awarded to two full-time veterinary students at OSU each year, with the recipients determined by a scholarship committee. In 2016 the award was $3,000 per student, however, the amount given varies each year based on how much money is available. To donate to the foundation, send checks payable to the OSU foundation to Sharon Worrell, alumni affairs specialist, 308 McElroy Hall, Stillwater, OK 74078

elcome to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center’s 40th Anniversary Season! The year ahead is shaping up to provide a record number of events, and also offers an exceptional selection of arts and entertainment for every taste and age group. Here are a few highlights. On September 10 Tulsa Symphony stages an anniversary concert of is own by hosting one of the most celebrated violinists in the world, Joshua Bell. This classical music concert will be a benchmark for years to come. The Symphony’s Pops series includes a showing of Raiders of the Lost Ark, November 5, with the Symphony performing John Williams’ epic score. The Symphony also plays a holiday concert in December, a Route 66 tribute concert in March and much more over the season from the classical repertoire. If you like big names, I hope you have season tickets to Tulsa Town Hall this year. The 2,365-seat Chapman Music Hall is sold out for this five-speaker series, and leading off Town Hall’s 82nd season is news journalist Soledad O’Brien, September 23. of which has played in Tulsa before. Disney’s Newsies is front-page worthy in September, followed by a family holiday treat, Elf the Musical, in November. Tune up your jive with Motown the Musical in March and Dirty Dancing, based on the film, in April. The hilarious hit Something Rotten continues the series in May, and Matilda The Musical plays in late June. One season add-on show slated for the year is the sweetly romantic Once, returning September 27-28. Dance reigns supreme at the PAC, as always, with Tulsa Ballet classics and Choregus Productions contemporary dance. Onegin (October 28-30) choreographed by John Cranko, is a story of unrequited love, set in Russia. Tulsa Ballet’s The Nutcracker reappears in December, plus a new work by Edwaard Liang commissioned by Tulsa Ballet, Dorothy & The Prince of Oz, has its world premiere in February. Marcello Angelini’s breathtakingly beautiful Swan Lake can be revisited in the spring. An added bonus to Tulsa Ballet main series performances is live accompaniment by the Tulsa Symphony. Choregus Productions goes global to book dance troupes never seen before locally. Brazil’s Grupo Corpo makes a Tulsa stop September 25. Black Grace from New Zealand performs April 1, followed by Argentina’s Che Malambo, April 18. Additionally, Choregus presents two celebrated singers, Broadway’s Tony Award Winner Kelli O’Hara in November, and the golden-voiced Nathan Gunn, January 22. Tulsa Opera’s season opens with the luscious music of Georges Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers, October 21 and 23. “Puccini to Pop” is a one-night only program featuring opera’s alluring Alyson Cambridge, mega-star Leona Mitchell and “barihunk” Michael Todd Simpson, February 25. Have you experienced chamber music? There’s this awesome organization in Tulsa, Chamber Music Tulsa, that forges an incredible season of chamber music standout performances each year. Featured musicians are often young, stellar and dynamic, infusing their programs with energy. Six ensembles are scheduled for 2016-17, beginning with the Dover Quarter, September 11. For the upcoming season, pay special attention to Miró Quartet’s “Beethoven Winter Festival” performances of the complete Beethoven string quartets, February 17-26. Our numerous theatre groups, Theatre Tulsa, American Theatre Company, Theatre Pops, Tulsa Project Theatre and Theatre North, each produce a roster of engaging shows at the PAC. They are worthy of a discussion devoted solely to what they bring to our Second Street theaters. You also will want to check out the PAC Trust’s Imagination Series that hosts touring children’s theater companies throughout the year and the Trust’s free noontime Brown Bag It series, held the first Wednesday of every month. Other upcoming headline acts to note are trumpeter Chris Botti, Daniel Tiger Live! and the Performing Arts Center Trust’s 40th Anniversary special guest, jazz singer Jane Monheit, who recently released a CD of Ella Fitzgerald songs. Ella and the Tulsa Philharmonic opened the PAC in 1977. On March 12, Jane sings with Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, her own combo and the Tulsa Symphony. Check out the season in detail at TulsaPAC.com, or call for a season brochure. Help the PAC celebrate four decades. We’re saving you a seat! Nancy Hermann is retiring as Director of Marketing at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in September.
On September 10, Tulsa Symphony hosts Joshua Bell, one of the world’s most celebrated violinists.

ure-bred dog, mixed breed dog, rescue dog, shelter dog, or the one that finds you? Are you picking a dog from the looks, size, what the children want, or for another reason? Choosing a dog for the way it looks can be risky, unless you are familiar with the temperament of the breed you are wanting. And mixed bred dogs, will be just that, a combination of several dogs characteristics, which can make for interesting dog! When it comes to choosing a dog, make sure that the temperament and personality of that dog suits your lifestyle and will mesh with your personality. If you choose a terrier, be ready for a high energy dog, they are adorable, but don’t be fooled by those doe eyes, they soon might be ransacking the garbage can! The size of a dog is not so important when they are a puppy. But when that CONTINUED >

SELECTING THE BEST DOG FOR YOU
(CON TI N U ED)
Julie and Lili Marlene July 2016
Author Julie L. Mueller, Owner of Aurora Kennel in Tulsa, has been a professional groomer for 50 years, along with breeding and showing top winning dogs, including rescue and human work.
Great Dane puppy is growing by leaps and bounds and eating you out of house and home, it will become extremely important. Not only from a standpoint of the cost of feeding a large growing dog, which is especially critical to their proper development, but they will also require plenty of room to exercise. These breeds many times end up in rescues and/or shelters, when the owners are unable to afford the expense of raising a large breed dog. Many times when the children of the family pick the dog, it is usually a short term love affair, until the novelty wears off, and then Mom and Dad are left with the responsibility of caring for the new family pet. This sometimes works out for the better, but many times can cause problems within the family, and the dog is the one left forgotten. 22

Mac - Golden Retriever
A dog called a cockapoo, schnoodle, yorkipoo, puggle, labradoodle, goldendoodle, or any other made up name for two pure bred dogs that produced a litter of puppies, they all can be classified as mixed breed dogs. And there is nothing wrong with that. But the rescues and shelters are already full of those exact dogs looking for homes, all there for an array of reasons and at the fraction of the cost of the “designer breeders” asking price. Some of the most wonderful dogs ever, are the dogs that other people have thrown away. But if you want a pure bred dog, do your research and visit AKC.org. Every pure bred dog is listed, with a complete breed description and referrals to reputable breeders. There are very few pure bred breeds that do not have some health testing requirements to ensure that you will be getting a genetically sound
and healthy puppy. All pure bred breeds have a National Breed Club, designed to help educate general public about their breed and will also have a breeder referral listing to put you in contact with a member breeder. And the best dog can be the one that just shows up one day, or you find abandoned. You may have just hit the lottery with the most grateful dog you will ever have. Now that you have found each other, a visit with your veterinarian will be required. Expect heartworm prevention, vaccines if needed, dental hygiene discussion and reminders to follow for annual checkups. Visit AVMA.org and Hemopet.org for continuing educational information on the care of your new best friend. But the one thing I would like to emphasize is that dog ownership is a commitment, just like a marriage or children. Being a responsible dog and/or cat owner, is more than just filling up the food bowl. So before you decide to commit to a new dog, make sure you have looked at the expense and time required for your new family member. This dog will be a part of your family, hopefully for the next 10, 12, 15 or more years. The time you spend with your dog is invaluable to him or her, every minute you spend with your dog; you will be rewarded by having the love and devotion of a perfect best friend.

Unwanted Dogs Take Flight FETCH FIDO A FLIGHT SHIPS DOGS FROM OVERCROWDED SHELTERS TO AREAS THAT NEED MORE PETS
Wings of Rescue provides the crates and the animals are loaded onto the plane.
ARTICLE ROBERT EVATT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
O
klahoma animal shelters have an ongoing problem -- they’re overwhelmed with the volume of pets coming in. There’s so many rescued from abusive situations or abandoned by owners, some shelters regularly resort to putting them down, even though they could be great companions for someone. But that’s not the case everywhere. In fact, in the Pacific Northwest, animal shelters have a waitlist for adoptable pets. The situation’s frustrating to animal lovers, but who would go to the trouble of sending dogs halfway across the country? Vikki Smith has. The Edmond resident was saddened to learn of our state’s crowded shelters when she moved to Oklahoma from California, and decided to do something about it. Since starting up this year, Fetch Fido A Flight, has shipped over 210 dogs in four flights from Oklahoma City to Washington state, and they’re hoping to send many more. “90 percent of the dogs we send are adopted within 24 hours,” she said. The most recent group of 49 dogs, pulled from over a dozen shelters and rescues throughout Oklahoma, flew to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho in late July. Smith said the trip completely
emptied a few of the shelters she worked with. Of the dogs on July's flight at least 16 were from the Tulsa area, including four fostered by Tulsa Animal Aid and five from Broken Arrow Animal Support. Identifying dogs in need and shipping them out has been a big undertaking. To realize her dream, Smith reached out to the nonprofit organization Wings of Rescue, a Californiabased organization that’s flown over 19,000 dogs and cats to new homes since 2009. In December of last year, founder Yehuda Netanel responded saying they wanted to be involved in helping with the shelter overcrowding situation here in Oklahoma! Wings of Rescue was able to fully fund the first two Oklahoma flights this year, but challenged Smith to find funding for subsequent flights. Today, Wings of Rescue still manages the logistics of the flights themselves, but Fetch Fido A Flight is the Oklahoma branch and the contact for all shelters and Rescues within the state who wish to participate in the program. “The shelters can shop the dogs we have and choose which ones they think will be adopted quickly,” Smith said. Vikki Smith with Belle waiting for the flight. Belle was found on Highway 75 in Tulsa and taken in by BARC after owners were never found.
Rosie and Asami, pulled from the Broken Arrow shelter by volunteers, wait for their flight. Both were adopted within 3 days. Rosie from Spokanimal C.A.R.E. and Asami from Kootenai Humane Society. 24
Tulsa Lifestyle | September 2016
Smith estimates it costs $15,000 per flight of 60 or so dogs and cats. However, she doesn’t want to pass any of the costs onto Oklahoma shelters or rescues, many of which are struggling as it is. “Our program is free to all the shelters that want to put shelter pets on our flights,” she said. “All we ask is that they’re prepared with the inoculations they need and, if possible, they make a donation in any amount to help with funding a future flight.” As a result, Fetch Fido a Flight depends on donations. The organization organizes a number of fundraising events, including a golf tournament at Coffee Creek Golf Course in Edmond, and is currently partnering with Liberty Mutual Insurance of Edmond, which has promised to donate $20 to Fetch Fido a Flight / Wings of Rescue Oklahoma for every person who calls them at 405.513.2645 for a quote on an insurance policy. Smith said her organization could use some non-monetary assistance, as some dogs need to be fostered as Fetch Fido a Flight finalizes arrangements for the next flight. The rescued dogs aren’t shoved in with luggage on a passenger flight -- instead, they have a climate-controlled cargo airplane all to themselves. “All the dogs are in the belly of the plane with the pilot,” she said. Smith’s eventual goal is to send out two flights of dogs per month, though she estimated the overcrowding situation at Oklahoma shelters could fill even more. Donations can be made through their website, FetchFidoAFlight.com, or their Facebook page. Local fundraising events can also be scheduled to help more of the animals in the Tulsa Metro area. Smith and her husband have three dogs of their own -- Tucker, Callie and Lilly, who are all cockapoos.

Keeping Your Current
Lifestyle in Retirement I
t’s a question that many pre-retirees find themselves asking – How much money will I need to keep my current lifestyle in retirement? What’s more, will I have enough to live the retirement I’ve been dreaming about? A few years ago, as we struggled with a significant bear market and the country’s financial crisis, the idea of achieving an ideal retirement seemed to take a backseat to ensuring retirement essentials were handled. Today, people are again envisioning a truly fulfilling retirement. At the very least, most people want to carry over the lifestyle they became accustomed to in their working years. Given that people also will likely have more free time after they set work aside, retirement can mean much more. WHAT ARE ‘LIFESTYLE’ EXPENSES?
It is helpful to categorize different types of expenses you will face in retirement. For 26
Tulsa Lifestyle | September 2016
starters, there are essential expenses, the basic costs of living. This includes food, shelter, utilities, medical care and similar types of costs associated with day-to-day living. Lifestyle expenses can vary based on your own priorities. They may include: • Travel • Hobbies • Recreational activities • Owning and maintaining a second home • Investing in your own business venture Costs for these types of expenses can vary widely depending on the types and specific nature of the activities you wish to pursue. For example, if you plan to travel
the world for a few years after you retire, that may require a significantly greater investment than taking trips to various parts of the U.S. or spending time at your vacation home. Another nuance to lifestyle expenses is that they may fluctuate from year to year. Some retirees choose to pursue a very active lifestyle in the first years of freedom from work and their expenses may be higher in the early part of retirement as a result. Then lifestyle expenses may decline as they grow older and are less able to pursue certain activities. It’s important to consider how your retirement lifestyle may change over time.
GOOD PLANNING MAY HELP MAKE YOUR DESIRED LIFESTYLE A REALITY
Most people who are able to achieve their ideal retirement don’t do so by accident. They plan ahead and develop a savings and investment strategy to make it happen. No matter your age, here are three important
steps you should consider starting now: • Map out your dreams for retirement. Try to identify specific goals and activities that you want to pursue. • Estimate the costs of your ideal retirement lifestyle, in terms of monthly or annual expenses. Try to leave some cushion in your estimates in case actual costs exceed your expectations. Keep in mind that even with modest inflation it will likely cost more down the road than it does today. • Develop a plan to fund those goals. This includes a dedicated savings strategy that is increased every year to account for inflation. Consider tempering the risk in your portfolio as retirement draws closer. The good news is that you can dream about retirement again. However, those dreams don’t become a reality without being proactive to make it happen. The sooner you start, the more successful you are likely to be.

POLARIZED LENSES AND ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATINGS continue to be premier products, providing optimal lifestyle options. Anti-reflective coatings improve clarity of vision by reducing glare and distracting reflections, especially in night driving conditions or during extended computer use. Polarized lenses also reduce glare by blocking reflected light and are recommended for bright light and high glare situations. These lenses are highly advised for water and snow sports and make excellent lenses for driving. WINK Optique is a full service optometry practice as well as a fashion optical boutique. The best of both to better serve you! SlimGENEration DNA Weight Loss helped me find my true self again and I am so happy! When I first came to SlimGENEration, I hadn’t even stepped on a scale in so long I had no idea how bad things had actually gotten. All I knew is that my waist size had steadily been increasing and I felt tired or sluggish a good majority of the time. I had tried to lose weight on and off over the past few years but without any real strategy, just the general notion of wanting to lose weight and eat better. Of course, without any real strategy or goals, I would generally fall back off the wagon within a week or less and once again put off losing weight until another day. After seeing recent pictures of myself and how disgusted I was with my weight, I decided it was time to seek out someone who could really help to give me some kind of strategy and advice on how to lose the weight and become healthier. That’s when I found SlimGENEration. SlimGENEration has helped me understand my genetic profile and how my body reacts to certain types of food and exercise, as well as how to get the most advantage from certain nutritional supplements. Other than giving me invaluable nutrition advice, they have been extremely encouraging and are almost as excited to see my results each week as I am. I’m extremely satisfied with the information, advice and encouragement they have given me. Thank you SlimGENEration! It’s been a very exciting journey!
