Editor’s Letter
Our Town. There are a lot of things I love about Tulsa. I love the smalltown atmosphere with big city dreams. Having been born and raised in Tulsa, I think it's great being able to go somewhere and always run into someone you know. While coming up with this month's stories, I was brainstorming some ideas while cruising on Facebook. My favorite page is Humans of New York. If you haven't heard of it, check it out. A photographer walks around New York City and takes pictures of random people and they share their life stories, personal struggles, inspirational thoughts, etc. I thought it would be great to highlight some local people who have made their marks in Tulsa. My research for this edition reminded me of how great Tulsa truly is. A lot of history, movies and famous people have put our town on the map: the Tulsa Race Riots in 1921, the movie The Outsiders was filmed in Tulsa in 1983, jazz musician and former professional basketball player Wayman Tisdale, country musician Roy Clark makes Tulsa his home, the list goes on and on. I'm also reminded of all the memories Tulsa has given me. My very first concert was Hanson at the Mabee Center in 1998. I met my best friend while working in Tulsa. Tulsa is also where I met my husband. This town has a lot of fond memories for me, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Around Town THUNDER ANNOUNCES COACHING STAFF Recently, the Oklahoma City Thunder named Monty Williams, Maurice Cheeks and Anthony Grant as assistant coaches and Billy Schmidt as quality control coach. They join assistants Mark Bryant and Darko Rajakovic, shooting coach Adam Harrington and Vin Bhavnani, who’s returning as manager of advance scouting/player development. “I’m really excited about the vast experience that this staff will bring to our team,” Donovan says. “The opportunity to bring these coaches together will help us work towards our goal of having a defensive identity, sharing the ball and playing efficiently on both ends. The group delivers an incredible set of individual skills, knowledge and background to the table, and I believe that the impact of their collective efforts will be very beneficial as we continue to build the tradition of the Thunder.” Williams joins the Thunder after spending five seasons as the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010-2015. This past year, he guided the Pelicans to their first playoff berth since the 2010-11 season. Williams also serves as an assistant coach with the USA Men’s National Team. Cheeks, who spent four seasons on the Thunder bench from 2009-2013, returns to OKC after serving as the head coach of the Detroit Pistons during the 2013-14 season. Grant arrives in OKC after serving as the head coach of the University of Alabama’s men’s basketball program from 2009-2015. Grant also served as assistant coach under Donovan at Florida from 1996-2006. Schmidt comes to the Thunder after spending last season as Donovan’s assistant at Florida. Prior to that, Schmidt was an assistant coach at Georgia Tech for three seasons (2011-14).
CELEBRATING THE JOURNEY AND REAPING THE REWARDS There was an abundance of cheering and applause last spring in the college counseling office at Cascia Hall as seniors received scholarship offers for college totaling $9 million. Many parents were elated as well and grateful as they realized a substantial return on investment in their students’ academic future. College counselors and faculty joined the celebration of the successful journey and overall accomplishments of the Class of 2015, all of whom will attend college. In the last five years, Cascia Hall seniors have been offered an average of $8.6 million in merit based scholarships. For the 93 graduates this year, the average award offered from more than 100 col-
leges and universities was approximately $300,000. A complete list of college acceptances and choices for the Class of 2015 can be found at CasciaHall.org/college. One graduate, Thomas Heinrich, was one of 30 recipients worldwide of the all-expenses-paid Congress-Bundestag Scholarship. Thomas will spend a year in Germany focusing on languages, education, international affairs, and government through cultural and linguistic immersion. Thomas credits the Cascia Hall environment and dedicated faculty and staff for helping him achieve his academic and professional goals. “The smaller class sizes at Cascia Hall allowed me to develop professional relationships with my teachers. There was genuine attention given to me as an individual,” he comments. “The guidance and mentoring I received were some of the most beneficial aspects of my Cascia Hall experience.”

I
t takes some courage to pick up a camera, ask a complete stranger a few questions and then post it online. This exact idea is why I am obsessed with the Facebook page “Humans of New York." It’s the only page I follow on Facebook because I love getting to see what people think/do/hate/like on a daily basis in a city I have only visited twice in my life. If you haven’t heard of “Humans of New York” you are definitely missing out. “Humans of New York” is an immensely popular photoblog created by former bond trader Brandon Stanton. With no formal photography training, Stanton makes documenting the everyday lives and thoughts of strangers he meets in New York City look easy. According to the United States Census Bureau, there are about 398,000 people currently living in Tulsa. Everywhere I go in Tulsa, I always run into someone I know and it’s crazy to think that out of 398,000 people I always run into someone I know. There are a lot of faces that make Tulsa unique and I had the opportunity to interview several people who make Tulsa amazing. STEVE CLUCK
Steve Cluck is the mastermind of the 'Don't Hate the 918' brand.
I have always wanted to meet Tulsa artist Steve Cluck, the man behind the "Don't Hate the 918" logo. Ever since I saw a girlfriend of mine post one of his shirts on Facebook, I was a fan. A born and bred Tulsan, Cluck is a pop artist who focuses on fashion, love and Oklahoma. The creator of pro-Oklahoma campaigns that
include "I Heart Tulsa" and "I Speak Okie" has always set out to make people love Tulsa as much as he does. With that notion in mind, Cluck hit the ground running 10 years ago and he made a name for himself. “What makes Tulsa so great, to me, is the people,” Cluck says. “Tulsa has some of the most compassionate, creative and talented people in the world. One of my most satisfying projects has been the ‘Don’t Hate the 918’ project, which shines the spotlight on the people of the Tulsa area. I am individually photographing 918 people who call the 918 area code home. You can see the photo project at A model DontHatethe918.com.” wearing one of The jack of all Steve Cluck's 'Don't trades hand prints Hate the 918' shirts. each of his articles of clothing in addition to many of his other products, which include buttons, magnets, coasters, greeting cards and art. pretty much do it all," Cluck says. "I've had my artwork exhibited in over 100 art exhibitions across the state. You can currently see my artwork at Aloft Hotel in downtown Tulsa. Another new endeavor I have started working on is Spexton, where I design wedding rings, assist customers, and help with marketing and branding." After graduating from the University of Tulsa in 2005, Cluck never thought of leaving Tulsa and embraced his love for the city he calls home and turn it into a fashion statement. Since then, Cluck's clothing has been spotted on VH-1, NBC, in People magazine, and in The Los Angeles Times. “What made me decide to open my business here in Tulsa was because ‘Don’t Hate the 918’ and ‘I Heart Tulsa’ are literally open love letters to Tulsa and it has been great that the community has embraced it,” Cluck says. “I have been doing it for over 10 years now and it is highly rewarding to celebrate our local community and all of the fine folks who live here.” STEVE AND RONNIE WILKINS
There are couples out there that make marriage look fun and easy. One of those couples is Ronnie and Steve Wilkins. Having met Ronnie through a friend, who also happens to be Ronnie’s cousin, I can honestly say I haven’t seen a couple have as much fun together as the Wilkins do. Long before the Wilkins’ love story took off, Ronnie has lived in Tulsa “off and on, but more on than off” for the past 39 years, with Steve calling Tulsa home for the past 40 years. “I’m a Navy brat born in San Diego, born to parents who were high school sweethearts from Edison High School,” Ronnie says. “After graduating high school in 1974, my folks got married and my dad joined the Navy. I was born, but my parents wanted to move back to Tulsa because all our family was here.”

Tulsa Lifestyle | August 2015
Steve’s road begins at St. Francis Hospital before his folks moved to Houston when he was little. He moved back to Tulsa just two years later. “I’ve been pretty close to a Jenks lifer,” Steve says. “I graduated from Jenks in 1986, but I've seen the town change from a Dairy Queen, a community pool, a train that housed the Jenks chamber and the old rodeo grounds. Today, Jenks consists of a McDonald’s, River Walk, Creek Turnpike running through the town and now many small businesses.” Ronnie and Steve met in 2001 and married a year and a half later in 2003. Since then, the Wilkins’ lives have been packed with working and raising four kids. Ronnie is the account manager at Fresh Point and Steve works for a contract facilities company at the University of Tulsa, where he directs the facility services department. “Together, Ronnie and I have two daughters and two sons, all of whom went to Jenks,” Steve says. “We are a sports crazy family We are a sports crazy family that enjoys weekend sports tournaments for soccer, softball and baseball. Riley, Connor and Jen are all in college and we have a sixth-grader, Seth, at home.” “We also love to go to the lake on the weekends,” Ronnie says. The decision to live in Tulsa was a no-brainer for Steve and Ronnie. “Although Tulsa has grown over the years, it still has its home town family feeling,” Steve says. “I like the attempt to enhance our river, and we have created a beautiful down town atmosphere. Tulsa is big enough to be one of the cities to watch for but still remains true to its roots of beautiful conservative family living town. Having been born here and rooted in its suburbs, you grown up so close to a city it becomes a part of you and the place you want your family to live. I like the fact I can get across town in 15 minutes and of course, there's a golf course every 10 miles. I truly love Tulsa, its culture, its people, its history and its recreation.”

LEGACY LEADERS TULSA FOUNDATION FOR ARCHITECTURE PRESERVES THE PAST AND PROMOTES FUTURE DESIGN EXCELLENCE ARTICLE DEBRA LAIZURE | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY
H
ave you ever wondered who built the Atlas building? Or why Art Deco is so prevalent in our city's architectural history? Wonder no more: Tulsa Foundation for Architecture has all the answers. Tulsa Foundation for Architecture (TFA), a non-profit organization, recognizes, records, and encourages preservation of our architectural environment and advocates for quality future development. The foundation is led by Executive Director, Amanda DeCort, and a passionate group of local leaders serving on the board of trustees and advisory council. PRESERVING THE PAST
TFA owns an extensive collection of original architectural drawings of many significant Tulsa buildings and residences, as well as architectural periodicals dating from 1920 to 1980, newspaper clippings, technical library, photographs, project specifications, and artifacts. Visit TulsaArchitecture.com and browse through project information and biographies of architects responsible for building the city of Tulsa. The foundation also hosts private tours and speaking engagements. This spring, TFA collaborated with Philbrook Museum of Art to bring in renowned expert Christine Madrid French to discuss Tulsa's midcentury architecture and the importance of preserving the recent past. DeCort says, "As Tulsans, we need to appreciate and take pride in our architectural heritage, and take care of it for the future. TFA is working to build that appreciation through our tours and events, and the response from the community has been tremendous." Take the recent Cliff Dwellers Reservoir Hill Home Tour, for instance. TFA showcased the eclectic neighborhood north of the city made up of an unusual mix of Spanish Colonial, Pueblo, mid-century ranch and modern home styles. Many life-long Tulsans have never heard of the neighborhood. DeCort says, "I received a note from a tour attendee thanking the foundation for highlighting such a great neighborhood. She said it helped to demonstrate to her kids that there are many wonderful neighborhoods throughout Tulsa, not just the ones everyone knows. It CONTINUED > was the best compliment we could have received."

Tulsa Lifestyle | August 2015
In June, TFA hosted the Cliff Dwellers tour, which offered Tulsans a rare opportunity to explore the homes that sit on top of Reservoir Hill.
The house was designed for Dr. Fred Glass and offers a gorgeous view of the city from its back deck.
"Peacock Plantation" isn't just known for the peacocks. It's also known for the beautiful gardens that surround the beautiful property.
This home is nicknamed the "Glass House," which was built in 1919, making it the oldest home on Reservoir Hill.

EMBRACING THE FUTURE
SECOND SATURDAY TOURS
Although history is important, it isn't the foundation's sole purpose. TFA encourages design excellence in new construction. TFA Board President Shane Hood, of W Design, says, “Tulsa set the bar very high for architecture in the 1920s and again in the 1950s. Anything we build today should be able to stand alongside the best of our historic built environment.” DeCort adds, “We have an obligation as a city to get it right.” "The rehabilitation of historic buildings in tandem with the surge in new downtown development is exhilarating. Commercial districts are booming, and not just in the Brady District. Look at Kendall-Whittier, the Pearl District, the Blue Dome, and East Village," says DeCort.
Want to know more? Join other architectural enthusiasts and history buffs on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at Topeca Coffee in the historic Mayo Hotel for a one-hour walking tour. Tour admission is only $10 and features Tulsa’s most important architectural collection. DeCort says, "Many people attend every tour. We like to mix it up, so one month we will have an Oil Capital Historic District tour highlighting Tulsa's oil barons, and another tour may emphasize our rich Art Deco history." Second Saturday tours often take its attendees to unusual spaces. Last month, tour guides led attendees through the tunnel from the Philcade building to the Philtower, usually closed to the public. An upcomThe home located on the tour is known as the "Peacock Plantation" because peacocks roam the grounds at this house. The sound of the peacocks greeted guests as they arrived to the tour.
The home also includes a living room deck that provides a 360-degree view of Tulsa. 20

ing tour will explore the city's industrial buildings, including a pre-statehood machine shop in the Blue Dome district. In October, TFA will host a special modernism tour to coincide with Docomomo US Tour Day (Docomomo-US.org), a nationwide tour day to raise the awareness of and appreciation for buildings and spaces designed during the mid-20th century. The local tour will be held on October 10th and more details will be announced in September. You won't want to miss it! DWELL IN THE IDL TOUR

The third annual Dwell in the IDL tour showcases downtown living within the Inner Dispersal Loop. This popular home tour gives Tulsans an inside look at urban living. In fact, the tour was so successful last year, they ran out of guide books. This year’s Dwell in the IDL Tour will be the afternoon of Sunday, October 4th. Look for more information this fall on the TFA website. GET INVOLVED
Memberships start at $35 and include a pass to a Second Saturday tour, members-only events such as the exclusive open house held each spring, and the annual members' holiday party. More importantly, your contribution helps the foundation conserve, preserve, and promote our significant architectural gems. DeCort says, "Great things are happening in Tulsa. We've seen a major interest in our architectural tours and have plans to increase our educational programs. Foremost, the foundation will encourage preservation of our historic architectural heritage and support excellent design for the future. It's an exciting time for our city." I sat down with Lindsey Morris, marketing manager at Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home, and Carolyn Blaire, Foundation executive director at Saint Simeon’s, to speak to them about their upcoming fundraiser, “Western Days 2015.” Since 1996, Western Days has brought together residents, their friends, families, loyal friends and supporters of Saint Simeon’s for an evening of fun, auctions, music and more to help fund operations and capital investments. members of their Saint Simeon’s family to attend. Western Days 2015 Chairs David Hogan and June Patton are focusing this year’s theme on their tradition of “care.” Established in 1960, by The Rev. Dr. E.H. Eckel, Saint Simeon’s has provided a safe haven for families and loved ones as they deal with the varying struggles of aging and memory loss. Their main focus has been to provide the best care for individuals of all faiths. Though the topic of assisted living is difficult at most, Western Days 2015 is a great way to meet others in similar situations or even open up that door of conversation. With a purchase of a general ticket of $75 you can enjoy live music by Shelby Eicher, take a visit to the popular general store, “A Stitchin-Time,” managed by resident Marie Millar displaying handcrafted items by Saint Simeon’s residents and staff, enjoy a wonderful dining experience, and of course meet the Chief Executive Cuddler, Simone, Saint Simeon’s famous In-House Therapy Dog. When I asked Blaire to describe “Western Days” in her own words, she responded confidently, “It’s a warm event with a lot of heart.” SAINT SIMEON'S CAMPUS

Before leaving Saint Simeon’s, I was given a tour of their campus. If I had not known it was a senior living community I would have assumed it was a sanctuary of sorts. Set in the Osage Hills of Tulsa, Saint Simeon's views are truly stunning. As a Natural Wildlife Habitat accredited by the National Wildlife Federation, they have provided a serene and thrilling experience for all ages with their expanse of gardens populated by peacocks, turtles, coy and more. Inside I was shown their newest remodel of the health care floor, now with an open-layout plan and open kitchen, so that residents can enjoy watching their meals being made. This year, they have also added skilled nursing to their full range of care choices those being: independent-cottage living, assisted living, health care and memory loss. They also have an indoor pool where I spotted a sign stating when the next “family swim” day was. I also walked past “Happy Hour” where people were enjoying treats and, from what I could tell, a good amount of belly-laughs. The activities seemed endless, and the staff happy to be there and of assistance. Driver’s Notebook
2015 Infiniti QX80 FULL-SIZE SUV DELIVERS WHEN IT COMES TO COMFORT, LUXURY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
T
he Infiniti QX80 is a vehicle of contradictions and it always leaves me with mixed feelings. I’ve never been a fan of the exterior styling, yet the interior beckons with soft leather and wood trim. The V-8 engine guzzles fuel but it is extremely smooth and strong enough to tow 8,500 pounds. Styling is certainly subjective. Infiniti updated the QX80 with a new grille that reflects the design language of the Q50 sedan. It’s an improvement, for sure, but the big nose is still a bit imposing. The QX80 used to be called the QX56. The new name is part of Infiniti’s revamped nomenclature. The SUV comes in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with a direct-injection, 5.6-liter engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 400-horsepower V-8 can tow up to 8,500 pounds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 on the highway. Base prices start at $63,250 for rear-wheel drive and $66,350 for all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive test vehicle from Infiniti’s press fleet had a sticker price of $77,185. On the road, the QX80 felt as if it were gliding over the pavement, even with the optional 22-inch wheels, yet the vehicle didn’t
26
Tulsa Lifestyle | August 2015
seem overly soft or mushy in turns. That’s a benefit of the optional hydraulic body motion control system that links shock absorbers from one side to those on the other, keeping body lean in check without forcing a stiff ride. The smooth ride was enhanced by a lack of wind and road noise. The optional Driver’s Assistance Package includes blind-spot warning, backup collision avoidance intervention, forward emergency braking and forward predictive collision warning. The backup intervention applies the brakes if something is behind the vehicle, and forward emergency braking does the same when it senses an imminent collision. The best part of the QX is the lush interior that has seating for eight with a second-row bench seat. Stratford Burl wood trim was a tasteful accent to the wheat-colored leather interior of the dark blue test vehicle. The fit and finish are all that one expects in a full-size luxury SUV. Standard equipment includes a navigation system, a Bose stereo with 13 speakers
and an Around View monitor that gives a birds-eye view of the vehicle. Moving object detection alerts the driver to approaching vehicles in parking lots. Around View was especially helpful in tight confines. The front seats could benefit from bottom cushions with deeper contours. The split-folding second seat had plenty of legroom, and the power-folding third seat was big enough to be usable. There is not much cargo space with the third seat in place. The test vehicle was equipped with the theater package that had 7-inch monitors in the back of each front headrest. Games or videos can be watched separately on either screen. PRICE: The base price of the test car was $63,250. Options included the theater package, blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, upgraded Bose stereo with surround sound and 15 speakers, heated and cooled front seats and 22-inch wheels. The sticker price was $77,185. WARRANTY:Â Four years or 60,000 miles with a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. AT A GLANCE
The QX80 is one of the lesser-known luxury SUVs. The seats are as plush as fine furniture, and the cabin feels luxurious. The 400-horsepower engine is very smooth yet it can tow 8,500 pounds. COUNTERPOINT: The QX80 is expensive, the V-8 is not easy on gas and the styling is not my favorite. POINT:
2015 INFINITI QX80 Engine: 5.6-liter, 400-horsepower V-8 Transmission: Seven-speed automatic Rear-wheel drive Wheelbase: 121.1 inches Curb weight: 5,633 pounds Base price: $63,250 As driven: $77,185 MPG rating: 14 city, 20 highway

Parting Thoughts
i live next door to what’s-his-name T
WORDS JIM COSGROVE
his month is our street’s annual block party. What shall we bring? Something meatless, of course. Fortunately there are other vegetarians on our street, so we don’t feel like complete odd balls. But the only way we found that out was by attending a previous block party. That’s where we found out that we have Presbyterians and Libertarians and a few septuagenarians on the block. There’s a band leader, a drama professor, a fudge maker, a former teacher-of-the-year, a cartoonist and two stay-at-home dads. It’s amazing what you can learn about your neighbors when you venture out the front door and share a meal together. Living in the suburbs, we have, by design, bought into a more private back porch culture. It’s a different world from the front porch/front stoop culture of my youth where, for better or worse, we knew our neighbors and most of their business. While visiting Mexico many years ago, I met a man who was fascinated by American culture. He said, “I hear that in the U.S. you can live next door to people for 20 years and never speak to them. Is that really true?” “Yep,” I said. “Sad, but true.” In our current back porch world, if you play it right, you could leave your home in the morning, get into your car in the garage, drive to work, park in another garage and return home in the evening without having to see or talk to a neighbor. And, as a bonus,
34

you wouldn’t have to encounter nature either, as you’d be safely encased in a temperature-controlled environment from your bedroom to your cubicle, while traveling on paved surfaces. A person could go months or years without actually touching the earth. This is fascinating and mind-blowing all at once. But the block party gives us an excuse to be civil humans. And we all know that everyone else has plastered on their smiles and is thinking the same things, like “I’m supposed to know you, but I can’t remember your name.” Thank goodness our neighbor Bob (who organizes the shindig every year) provides nametags, because it’s hard to remember these folks you only see once a year. Now I’m not condoning alcohol as a sure-fire way to goose things up, but a few years ago we brought beer to share – the first time anyone had dared such a thing! What happened next was like the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Pretty soon bottles seemed to appear from nowhere. People stayed later that year than they had ever stayed before. When we cleaned up, there were far more bottles than the six we brought. And even if the conversations hover around the mundane – who moved in and who moved out to the latest remodeling project to what so-and-so is doing to keep the rabbits out of her hostas – just bear with it, because you not only might learn something, you just might enjoy yourself.
