Editor’s Letter

Hello, T-Town! B

efore I introduce myself I want to begin my first-ever editor’s letter by thanking my predecessors. Since the inception of Tulsa Lifestyle magazine, they have done a fantastic job working hard to make this magazine what it is today. I know I have some huge shoes to fill after following in the footsteps of these incredibly talented people, but I am truly honored and excited about this new adventure. The theme for this month is summertime. I can remember sitting on my daddy’s lap at the age of 3 watching Chicago Cubs games. Baseball was the first sport I ever fell in love with. My dad would take me to every Tulsa Drillers game he could and to this day baseball is still my favorite sport. I eat, breathe and sleep sports and I can’t imagine the summer without baseball. I am really excited about this amazing opportunity and am looking forward to continue growing Tulsa Lifestyle magazine and making it one of the best magazines Tulsa has ever had. I hope you enjoy the stories we’ve shared with you in this issue. Like us on Facebook and share your own summer vacation stories. We’d love to hear from you!

An accident left Stacy confined to a wheelchair. But it was no accident that she chose Hillcrest Hospital South for the delivery of her second daughter. The nurses and physicians at Hillcrest Hospital South had the expertise to handle the challenges of someone giving birth with spinal cord injuries. They provided the compassionate care that Stacy needed after she was admitted at only 8 months. During her month of bedrest, the staff went above and beyond to make sure the whole family was well taken care of until they all returned safely home. Goetz, who lives in Washington, is a certified professional horticulturist. She says the phrase "Inspiring Gardens to Create" has guided her life as a garden designer, writer and speaker. Its purpose is to foster the appreciation, study, culture, history and use of herbs.

cally and business and lifestyle patterns changed tremendously. At the close of the decade, the citizens of Tulsa were living in a vastly different community than had existed 10 years earlier. This exhibit will give visitors a glimpse at life in Tulsa during the 1950s, including the ways the city grew and changed and the ways individuals and families spent their time as the second half of the 20th century began. The Tulsa Historical Society is the only museum in Tulsa focused on building, preserving, and presenting a broad based general collection of Tulsa’s history. Thanks to the vision, tenacity and commitment of dedicated board and volunteers, the Tulsa Historical Society is located within a superb 28,000 square foot facility and grounds, formerly the site of a historic home in the Woodward Park complex. TOP TEACHER AWARD Jenks Freshman Academy teacher Kim Graham is the grand prize winner of Dr. Robert Herman Orthodontics’ Teacher Appreciation Contest. More than 100 students and community members across Green Country submitted essays nominating teachers for this recognition. As the top teacher in the contest, Graham will get complimentary braces for herself or a family member. The five other teachers selected as local winners will each get to choose between a spa day, OU football tickets or OSU football tickets. The local winners are Chaneta Redding, a homeschool teacher from Tulsa; Janice Johnson, a second-grade teacher at Henryetta Elementary; Evett Barham, a leadership teacher at Pryor High School; and Laurie Logan, a careersteacher at Ewing Halsell Middle School in Vinita. “I clearly remember the significant impact of the teachers I was very lucky to have teach me,” Dr. Herman said. “Our team is thrilled to recognize the exemplary commitment that our community’s teachers demonstrate on a daily basis in the classroom and beyond.” Dr. Robert Herman Orthodontics serves patients of all ages with main offices in Tulsa and Bartlesville, and satellite offices in Henryetta, Pryor and Vinita.

NIFTY FIFTIES: CULTURE & COMMERCE IN 1950S TULSA Now open: Nifty Fifties: Culture & Commerce in 1950s Tulsa exhibit at the Tulsa Historical Society & Museum. For the first half of the 20th century, Tulsa’s efforts to build the local economy and create a modern skyline continued at a rapid pace. Businesses diversified and supported Tulsa residents and the country as a whole. By the end of the 1940s Tulsa’s efforts had succeeded in building a bigger city, but some began to wonder about turning it into a better city. As the 1950s dawned, the people of Tulsa questioned why their hometown was lacking the cultural opportunities experienced in other cities of the same size. The hardworking pioneers and early oilmen of the city were ready to help provide those luxuries to the next generation. While Tulsans joined the rest of the country focusing on the Cold War, the space race, television, and rock ‘n’ roll, Tulsa’s leaders worked to provide a better and more culturally complete community for residents. This focus remained even as the city grew geographi10

This is actually very good, because it means things are, for the most part, well tested before being used for large numbers of people,” says Ratliff. He has focused his practice primarily on providing breast and body procedures, with more than 6,000 successful breast augmentations performed. Ratliff is board certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which means he has met rigorous training and qualification standards. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and continues to stay on the leading edge of innovation and technology available in plastic surgery. Ratliff has been active in breast implant research and development, including major national studies for two silicone implants recently approved by the FDA. In addition, Ratliff is a member of the faculty of the Osler Institute, and trains other plastic surgeons from throughout the United States who are preparing for their specialty board

examinations and for reviews and updates. He is also part of the LEAD Council, an elite group of plastic surgeons who come together to exchange experiences and advancements in breast augmentation technology and pioneering progress in this distinctive field. Most recently, Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa expanded and updated the surgical suite in the existing historic Cherry Street location to include a second state-of-the-art operating room and recovery area for patients. Perhaps the most significant expansion of the practice has been the addition of a new physician, Dr. Brenda Jeffrey Schiesel, as a member of the Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa team. Schiesel recently completed her Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and is a graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She provides a perfect complement to the 24-year tradition of surgical excellence and superior patient care that has become the hallmark of the Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa. Together, Ratliff and Schiesel are committed to continuing to provide their patients with the highest level of excellence and to taking the steps necessary to be at the forefront of the plastic surgery specialty.

W

hen my siblings and I were younger, our parents took us on plenty of summer vacations. I remember getting to ride a combine harvester when we visited family in Iowa, getting to see the Hollywood sign when we visited Los Angeles, experiencing the ritz and glamor of Las Vegas and seeing Mickey Mouse at Disney World and Disney Land. Tulsans of all ages love taking vacations. If you are planning your summer vacation, below you’ll find a few unique vacation ideas that might inspire some ideas for your next family vacation. Cindy and her husband Jim love to escape to the beach. So when they came across their own little piece of paradise a couple of years ago, they knew there wasn’t any place like it. “It’s an island called Eleuthera, which is in the Bahama chain,” Cindy says. “It’s a skinny island that is surrounded on one side by the Atlantic Ocean and on the other by the Caribbean Sea. So if you’re wanting to enjoy the waves one day, you head over to the Atlantic side of the island, but if you are wanting a more calm day, you go to the Caribbean side.” Eleuthera is about 110 miles long and is populated by about 8,000 people. If you’re looking for quiet, beautiful beaches, Eleuthera is the place to go. If beaches aren’t your thing, another great vacation spot to check out is Peru. A high school classmate of mine and her sister recently returned from Cusco, Peru, and had the time of their lives. “Our trip was planned and booked on a whim,” Tara says. “My sister Laura asked me to go on Friday, booked our flights and tour guide Saturday and we left for our vacation three days later.” With so much to do in Cusco, Tara says the best thing they did was hire a private tour guide and driver to arrange their schedule. “We booked our tour through PeruvianOdyssey.com,” Tara says. “This was nice because they knew what worked for previous clients and they had great tips and tricks for us to make the most of our limited time.” Tara did have some reservations about going to Peru, but once she got there, all her worries melted away. “I was so scared and excited about this trip. I have always wanted to see Machu Picchu but didn’t know enough about Peru or any of its culture to feel comfortable going there. With the limited amount of research I did before hand, I loved my trip! It was full of friendly people, locals and tourists, and cleaner than I expected.” It seems no matter where you go and what you do, summer vacations are about making memories and having fun. The Cathedral is located in the main square of Cusco, Peru and has been dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation. It is home to many oil paintings, gold and silver artworks and sculptures. I have always wanted to backpack through Europe. I've had several friends who have done it and they said it's one of the greatest things to do. My friend Robert recently went, visiting 12 cities during his seven-week journey through Europe. I asked him to share some travel dos and don'ts for those wanting to explore the continent. DOS

“I liked our hotel and the experience we had with it. We were very close to the Cusco Countryside and it gave me an idea of what life was like for the towns people. 18

Tulsa Lifestyle | July 2015

• Book all your European Travel with low-cost airlines. "I wanted my journey to begin in eastern Europe, with plans to backpack westward," Robert explains. "I found it most cost-effective to fly into Dublin through an American carrier, then use low-cost airline carriers such as the infamous Ryanair for the rest of the trip from Dublin to Krakow, Poland. I saved somewhere around $500-$700 by planning my trip this way." Robert adds that airlines like Ryanair come with nothing but the seat you're in, so you'll need to leave all expectations of leg room, customer service and free bag checks at the gate because you get what you pay for. • Use hostels instead of hotels. "If you are under 35 years old and traveling Europe, hostels are the way to go," Robert says. "First off, hostels are nothing like the notorious American films. They are so much cheaper than hotel rooms, especially if you are traveling alone, and they are key to connecting with the city you are visiting, as they are typically staffed by down-to-earth, friendly locals. I used the website HostelWorld.com to book all my hostel stays because they have a great network of reviewers. I saved an average of $25-50 per night by using hostels instead of hotels." Tara says that Machu Pichu is a 4-day hike and she recommends wearing sunscreen. "We started our MP tour with a bus ride to the top gate entrance. You do need your passport and a ticket to enter."

“Montmartre is known for being the home to many painters including Van Gogh and of course the infamous Moulin Rouge.” ”The Eiffel Tower is so iconic and seen so many times throughout your life that when you first look at it in person you have to just stop and stare.” • Splurge on a nice camera. "You are going to witness things and places that you've never seen or may never see again, so you'll want to capture the moment with a nice camera for good quality photos," Robert says. DON’TS

• Don’t preplan your tour guides. "This is a BIG don’t. You can use sites like TripAdvisor.com to see reviews for tours, but I found the best tour was always a walking tour," Robert says. "Sandeman’s NewEuropeTours.eu offered the best walking tours. They were great for briefly seeing the city and then later returning alone to the places you wanted to visit. Another awesome feature of these tours was that they were always free. At the end of the tour you can decide whether or not to tip your tour guide. I never felt like I wasted my money on a tour, ever." • Don’t bring a suitcase. Two words: pack light. "Pack so light that you don’t even need the suitcase because you'll spend way too much trying to stow it on an airplane, try to find a safe place to put it and it's a hassle to carry," Robert advises. "Most European hotels and hostels don’t have elevators, so you'll be climbing a lot of stairs. You don't want to climb stairs with a bulky suitcase. I was able to fit five outfits into my backpack. If you want to pack a few more things, I'd recommend taking a duffel bag." • Don’t travel during May-August. "I hate long lines and I prefer mingling with locals when traveling, but both of these things are hard to accomplish in popular European cities during the summer months with a lot of tourists around," Robert says. "I traveled through November and December and found friendly faces that always had time to sit and chat with me, answering all my crazy questions about their cities. As a bonus, I found a comforting mild winter in most of the cities I visited, unlike the harsh cold we are used to here in Tulsa." July 2015 | Tulsa Lifestyle

Parting Thoughts

The Boys of Summer WORDS ANNE POTTER RUSS

I

love baseball – not the major league stuff with all of the hoopla, I mean the teenage-level, (not even 3&2) real baseball on real grass. There really are differences, and I'm not talking about the fact that no one walks by my fold-out chair with a hot dog, peanuts and a cold beer. Recreation-league baseball is a treat that only the luckiest of parents get to enjoy, and I love watching it, because my son loves playing it. There is something about a daily smacking of about 300 balls with one's bat that brings out the exhaustion (I mean happiness!) in a teenager with testosterone. And, that's just practice. Come game day, the real fun begins... for both of us. Him – "Where are my cleats/hat/glove/bat/water/hitting glove/ bag/sunflower seeds/socks???" Me – "Did I wear your cleats/socks/seeds last???" Him – "Mom, we're going to be late!" Seriously, I really do enjoy the season. He packs up whatever he can find that resembles baseball equipment, and I pack up my lounge chair (yes, with a foot-rest), my cooler, sunscreen, snacks, magazines, a blanket (for sibling/friend sitting), and a husband, and off we go. The grass is cool, the players are so happy to be hitting and catching and running..., and the parents are so happy to be sitting, chatting, munching, and cheering. 34

Tulsa Lifestyle | July 2015

We park about 12 yards from the field (for free). There is no concrete on which to burn our feet. The breeze blows, and we position our chairs under the trees, or in/out of the sun, depending on the day. The boys never care what the weather is, as long as there is a bucket of balls and an opposing team that shows up every now and then. There's not one commercial playing in the background. No announcements, no megaplexes with snack stations, no numbers hanging from large fences ("Look for field 37, Harold!”). There aren't scads of other teams playing around us with 385 cars hiding ours in big parking lots. It's just us and the kids and the baseballs and the grass. The sun takes a little longer to set at the height of the season, and the parents marvel at how the boys have grown, and how the team has improved, and how much they've learned since we started all of this. I don't have anything against big-league ball. It is a wonderful form of entertainment. But for my money, it's a local ball field with a picnic and some friends I've made over the years in my comfy chair, and some worn-out teenagers with red cheeks at the end of the evening that gives me the biggest entertainment value in these parts. It's part of the beauty of living in the Midwest.
