In the heart of Westchester and Putnam Counties, as well as Fairfield County in Connecticut, there’s a cleaning service like no other—Cleanology. Owned and operated by the inspiring mother-daughter team, Paola and her daughter, Diana, this multigenerational, women-owned business has been providing impeccable residential and commercial cleaning services for over 25 years. Their story is one of resilience, community, and a true passion for excellence. We sat down with them to learn about their journey and the values that make Cleanology stand out.
When asked what inspired them to start their business, Paola and Diana’s answer was simple: independence and the potential for growth. “Starting this cleaning business offered us the chance to build something meaningful, not just for us but for our team as well,” they shared. Their dedication to building a strong team has created lasting employment opportunities and allowed them to support their staff in achieving both personal and professional growth. For this mother-daughter duo, their journey isn’t just about personal success but about empowering others to thrive.
Like many entrepreneurs, the path to success was not without its obstacles. Paola, having immigrated to the United States nearly 30 years ago, faced a significant language barrier. “Learning English was daunting, but it was also the driving force behind our determination to succeed,” Paola reflected. Her resilience in mastering the language and building strong client relationships became the cornerstone of their success. Every challenge they encountered was turned into an opportunity, and through hard work and dedication, they cultivated a business— and team—that embodies perseverance.
Cleanology goes beyond just cleaning. “We love what we do, and it shows,” they emphasized. What sets them apart is their personalized approach and unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. From the moment a customer requests a quote, they’re met with attentiveness and professionalism. Their team meticulously ensures each cleaning meets the highest standards, offering pre- and post-cleaning walkthroughs to ensure complete satisfaction. At the heart of their work is the belief in integrity, privacy, and professionalism—values instilled in every member of their team.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Cleanology’s work is their community impact. Their initiative, 'Caring Clean,' provides low-cost cleaning services to elderly residents, showing the duo’s deep-rooted commitment to giving back. “It’s important for us to support those who have given so much to our society,” they shared. In addition, they are preparing to launch a new initiative offering free one-time cleanings to expecting mothers in need. For them, it’s not just about business—it’s about creating a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
When asked for advice, their message was clear: “Just do it! Don’t be afraid to take that first step.” They encouraged women to surround themselves with supportive, like-minded individuals and not hesitate to ask for help. “This is just the beginning of your incredible journey, and together we can break barriers and achieve great things,” they shared with a spirit of optimism. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER INTERIOR DESIGNERS IN WESTCHESTER?
I like to think that I am approachable and easy to get along with—all characteristics that are super important when working in someone's home. I try to make the whole design/renovation process fun. I find immense joy in seeing every project come to a happy ending, no matter the scale. A new trend in design is removing most of the homes' first-floor walls. I am currently working on two such renovations. The beforeand-afters are amazing!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? WHO DO YOU LOVE WORKING WITH?
I truly enjoy working with people to bring their design concepts to fruition, (m)y photographer is a Briarcliff-based mom, Priyanca Rao. I work with Kanters Carpet in White Plains, Terra Tile in Briarcliff, Best Plumbing in Scarsdale, Patdo Light Studio in Port Chester, Westwood Flooring in Elmsford, and Lumia Decorators in New Rochelle
WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO UPDATE THEIR INTERIORS?
I always suggest working in stages, room by room; otherwise, you feel as if no project is ever “complete.” For quick and easy “facelifts,” switch out your pillows, add a throw, or buy an inexpensive rug for an interim fix. I’m also a big believer in recycling/repurposing furniture. A quick coat of a fun high gloss paint color, and some fabulous fabric can completely transform a piece!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY?
I love how each area in Westchester has its unique feel, from the river towns to the shore, to the horse farms, and all of the beautiful parks in between. The community is really wonderful. Before the pandemic, I was on the event committee for Westchester Medical Center’s annual women’s heart health fundraiser.
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
For nearly five decades, Thompson's Cider Mill has been a beloved part of Westchester’s landscape. It all began in the early 1970s when founder Geoff Thompson first experienced the magic of freshly pressed apple cider. Growing up in Croton, Thompson had only ever tasted pasteurized, filtered apple juice. When he tried fresh cider for the first time, he recalls, “I was amazed by the different flavors, aromas, and textures.” He fondly dubbed it the “nectar of the gods,” and from that moment, he was hooked.
What started as a hobby soon grew into something more. After sharing his homemade cider with colleagues, their enthusiastic response inspired him to take it further. “Several staffers asked to buy it, and that’s when I decided to go into the cider business,” Thompson explains. By 1978, he had purchased an abandoned orchard in Yorktown and planted 525 new fruit trees. Today, the mill presses fresh cider weekly from September through Christmas, celebrating its 48th season this year.
A key to Thompson's success is his dedication to heirloom apples. These varieties, such as Baldwins, Russets, and Seek-no-Furthers, fell out of favor due to challenges like disease susceptibility and inconsistent yields. Yet, Thompson recognized their unique flavor profiles and believed in their potential long before heirloom apples became popular again. “I discovered great tastes and unique character,” he says, emphasizing how these apples set his ciders apart from commercially available options.
In addition to classic ciders, Thompson’s Cider Mill offers creative blends, including Apple-Blueberry and Apple-Black Cherry. The hard cider line, launched in 2016 with the expertise of cider maker Dan O’Brien, has also been a hit.
CONTINUED >
“Many of our customers have come for decades,” Thompson says, “and we now see second and third generations who’ve grown up with us.”
Inspired by the refined ciders of Normandy and England, Thompson’s hard ciders feature a clean, crisp taste. “We went for a more sophisticated product,” he explains. Their line now includes Heirloom Dry, Antique Apple Semi-Dry, and the award-winning Apple Rose, which earned a prestigious Platinum Award at the Great American Cider Competition.
Sustainability is a core focus at the mill. Thompson works with larger growers to minimize the use of chemicals, employing low-spray methods and organic solutions whenever possible. However, orchard management has its challenges. “Our worst enemy is the vole, an underground critter that eats the roots of the trees,” Thompson shares. In the mill itself, he emphasizes the importance of safety and cleanliness. The fresh cider is treated with ultraviolet light, which “retards spoilage and eliminates harmful bacteria while having no impact on flavor.”
Thompson’s Cider Mill is not just about cider—it’s also a cherished fall destination. For many families, visiting the mill has become a multi-generational tradition. “Many of our customers have come for decades,” Thompson says, “and we now see second and third generations who’ve grown up with us.” During the peak season, the mill operates at Sun Dial Farm, thanks to the generosity of the Hawkey family, who share their space to accommodate more visitors.
Looking ahead, Thompson sees even more potential for growth. While cider is often associated with the fall, he hopes to make it a year-round beverage by expanding availability in retail and restaurant outlets. Additionally, the mill is exploring year-round production of fresh cider and cider vinegar. “Fortyeight years later, I still have dreams,” Thompson says.
Thompson’s passion for cider making remains as strong as ever, promising an exciting future for this Westchester gem.
