The Hair Wharf

A HAIR SALON LOCATED IN KATONAH

ARTICLE BY JULIA BRAATZ

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY COLE PHOTOGRAPHY

When you walk into The Hair Wharf salon, you’re part of the family. That’s the mission at this salon, that every client that walks through the door doesn’t just leave happy, but to feel like they’ve just visited their second home. And a tropical home at that, since there are mermaids everywhere inside. That’s because the Hair Wharf started in Katonah in June of 1976 with previous owners Carol and John having dreamed of a salon on the wharf of the water, eventually even retired to the beach, so The Hair Wharf has kept this dream alive with their aquatic decor.

The relationships built with clients is truly what sets The Hair Wharf apart from any other salon. They have stylists from each generation, so there really is someone for everyone, who can share in navigating, supporting, and comforting their clients through all different stages of life. The connections that the stylists make with their clientele “go beyond the salon chair”, whether it’s celebrating major milestones or dealing with hard times together, it’s a special bond that gets made here at The Hair Wharf. According to them, “We love to have fun, we laugh, cry together and at times every client and stylist are in the same conversation. There are times where we all are laughing so much that you hear us from outside, and yes while the doors are closed.” It isn’t just how you look that’s important to The Hair Wharf, but how you feel while you're with them and thereafter.

The Hair Wharf provides a range of services, really showing that all are welcome. These services involve both men and women hair cuts as well as teen hair cuts. All walks of life are welcome as they even provide first hair cutting. Other services involved are hair color and root touch up, highlights, gloss and keratin treatments, and extensions. They even provide facial waxing and make up services as well. They therefore provide everything from haircuts to a full makeover.

Some at home tips that you can follow courtesy of The Hair Wharf are simple. For all the ladies, if you feel like your hair gets greasy fast, especially when you air dry your hair, then it’s a good idea to try to dry at least the roots of your hair and then let the rest air dry. This is because water and oil don’t mix, and that includes the grease in hair. For all the guys, they advise that when you put any product in your hair to not distribute it to the sides and the back of the hair. They also emphasize that less is more, so be sure to not put in too much either. Small touches like these can really make a difference to keep hair looking fresh in between visits.

To check out The Hair Wharf and learn more about them, be sure to follow their social media @thehair wharf and take part in the family atmosphere online. It’s there that they post all sorts of fun things and funny videos, before and afters, and availability. Their website is currently getting updated, so for now you can use their social media to stay in touch with them.

“We love to have fun, we laugh, cry together and at times every client and stylist are in the same conversation.”

Feeding Westchester Making A Difference

Feeding Westchester is Bringing Nutritious Food to those In Need

Wages for the poor are still prevalent even in the wealthy area of Westchester, but Feeding Westchester is here to help. The mission of Feeding Westchester is simple, to bring nutritious food to the areas of Westchester County that need it most. Their motto is “Together, we feed for a better tomorrow.” It’s a motto that has made a major impact on the Westchester community, as they serve an average of 229,000 neighbor visits with around 300 programs and partners. This includes 80,000 kids in Westchester through partnerships with local schools, libraries, daycare centers, and other organizations, where these kids receive nutritious and easyto-prepare food that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Not only that, but 40 percent of the food that Feeding Westchester provides is fresh fruits and vegetables.

Feeding Westchester through their Green Thumb initiative doesn’t give just any food, but brings fresh seasonal produce every week to their community partners and meal programs. Similarly, their Senior Grocery Program has food brought to seniors and those with disabilities directly to their homes to promote independent living and better

health. They’re also improving the health of those in need through their Food is Medicine program, which involves a combination of improved food access, targeted healthcare, and community resources, in collaboration with healthcare facilities such as hospitals and clinics. Their Mobile Food Pantry is breaking barriers to food access through, a “market on wheels” as their specialized 26-foot refrigerated truck brings fresh food to the communities that don’t necessarily have access to fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The delivery allows them to help neighborhoods that don’t have operating service agencies. The Mobile Food Pantry’s schedule includes distributing late afternoon and Saturday so that working people can access fresh food more conveniently. Feeding Westchester’s nutritionists provide food education and resources to low-income families. The Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables initiative provides low-income families with cost-effective and practical tips for increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, as

well as their licensed nutritionists working with their community partners to provide nutrition education workshops, USDA-approved recipes, and cooking demonstrations.

Feeding Westchester is also a member of Feeding America, a nationwide nonprofit network that includes over 200 food bands in every state in the US. This membership gives them access to millions of pounds of donated food products from national companies. They’re also able through the membership to maximize their efficiency in delivering their services and access to training, allowing them to be one of the top 10 percent of

Feeding America’s member food banks for providing nutritious foods to their community.

Feeding Westchester has truly made a difference, but don’t take our word for it, just look at all the awards and accolades they continue to receive. They were rated by 914 Inc. Best Place to Work in 2024, as well as winning both Best of Westchester and Gold Transparency in 2023. They also have 4 stars on Charity Navigator. Feeding Westchester is doing its part, because as they say “For many of our neighbors, the availability of affordable, nutritious food is elemental to their emotional and physical survival. It is within our power to not only feed those in need but to provide them with resources and hope for better days ahead.”

Bedford Post Tavern

Nestled within the historic Bedford Post Inn, the Bedford Post Tavern is a true culinary gem. While the dinner offerings change seasonally, a few standout dishes have earned a permanent spot on the menu—and for good reason. Their burger might be one of the best I’ve ever had, the grilled branzino is perfectly executed, and the onion tart, a surprising delight, has become an unforgettable favorite. Whether you’re planning a casual dinner or a celebratory night out, the Bedford Post Tavern is a must-visit destination.
