WOMEN’S ISSUE! In these pages, you will meet some of the women who are working hard to make Venice the caring, vibrant place we all love to call home. This month brings with it an abundance of joy, bright blue skies, beautiful springtime flowers and, of course, the celebration of Mother’s Day, a time to appreciate the women in our lives and to strengthen the connection we have with our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. In remembrance of my mother, Mary Margaret Kamin, this Women’s Issue is my Mother’s Day card. Mom, at the age of 92 in 2015, went on to a better place and although we miss her wholeheartedly, she still is with us in mind, heart and spirit. My mother worked hard and loved to take care of others, so her career as a nurse suited her perfectly. She guided our family through the ups and downs of life. She inspired us all to always do our best. I know that she would be so proud of me, publishing this wonderful magazine that highlights our community. Mom loved to read, and I can imagine her enjoying these articles about the ever-energetic Kate Hyland-Mercer, owner of Ferris Wheel Finance; about the vibrant Joyce McCaffrey and the good she does at her

women at the nonprofit Our Mother’s House; and the women promoting the wonderful

properties at Pro Group Realty’s new Tra Ponti Villaggio. Mom loved to learn something new every day and was always reading something with a dictionary close at hand. When she’d come across a word she didn’t quite understand, she never failed to look it up. Her love for learning inspired me. She taught me the perseverance and bulldogged determination that has guided me with an abundance of passion through my own media career.

The women featured in these pages are absolute success stories. I know my mother would want to celebrate them as much as I do. May you find a quiet moment or two to enjoy this issue we’ve lovingly dedicated to you. Happy Mother’s Day!

“We have our urban setting here, but being on the Intracoastal, we also have the water. The activity here is tremendous. We see jet skis, pontoon boats, sailboats and cruisers all day long. We are at the heart of everything wonderful there is to do in Venice.”

ON THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE ISLAND OF VENICE, DIRECTLY ON THE INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY, PRO GROUP REALTY IS UP TO SOMETHING TRULY UNIQUE AND SPECIAL: TRA PONTI VILLAGGIO—"THE VILLAGE BETWEEN THE BRIDGES." This new community of four spectacular townhomes and 19 single-family courtyard homes features flowing, high-ceiling living spaces of the most modern design, all within walking distance of everything downtown Venice has to offer. Those lucky few fortunate enough to buy here will enjoy luxury living in the very midst of Venice’s urban life, while also offering a quiet, upscale retreat just steps from the downtown core. Looking out from the third-floor master bedroom balcony of Tra Ponti Villaggio’s recently completed townhome model, Pro Group Realty broker Jayne Parrish enjoys the wonderful late winter weather and notices a passing luxury cruiser and a sailboat. “You get to watch these beautiful boats pass by all day long from the two balconies and first-floor lanai. There were three dolphins here last week and a manatee the month before," she says. "Imagine watching the annual Boat Parade from this viewpoint. Residents can just step outside and have easy access to the Venetian Waterway Trail, the Legacy Trail and the Historic Train Depot.” The townhomes in particular are reminiscent of New York City’s Greenwich Village brownstones, with their spacious floor plans and private elevators. Each townhome features a two-car garage with plenty of public parking around the community. Prewired throughout for home security, every home in the new Tra Ponti Villaggio offers seemingly endless walk-in closet space and living areas that feature 10-foot ceilings, CONTINUED >

8-foot solid-core doors and hurricane impact windows and sliding glass doors, among the many other custom appointments within the home. “I don’t know of anything like this in Venice,” says realtor Becky Rose, who has been with the project since its inception in 2016. “Tra Ponti Villaggio is right in downtown Venice. The people who buy here will be able to walk and bike everywhere downtown, and we are just a few blocks from the beach. We have our urban setting here, but being on the Intracoastal, we also have the water. The activity here is tremendous. We see jet skis, pontoon boats, sailboats and cruisers all day long. We are at the heart of everything wonderful there is to do in Venice.” A Tra Ponti Villaggio townhome on the Intracoastal Waterway

The townhomes, starting at $1.15 million, feature three bedrooms, three and a half baths and more than 3,100 square feet of living space spread over three floors, all connected by staircases and elevators. The single-family homes, starting at $720,000, range from 1,926 square feet to more than 2,900 square feet.

“Customers choose their home-site, choose their home plan and then we build,” Becky says. “Typically, the build takes 10 to 12 months.” With a downtown location and walkability to everything, Tra Ponti Villaggio will truly be a peaceful urban retreat at the center of where everyone in Venice wants to be. 138 E. ANYONE WHO PUTS THEIR FINANCES IN THE HANDS OF KATE HYLAND-MERCER AT HER FERRIS WHEEL FINANCE BOUTIQUE INVESTMENT FIRM WILL QUICKLY KNOW JUST HOW SAVVY AND CUSTOMER-ORIENTED THIS FINANCIAL GURU IS. Kate loves what she does and has immersed herself in all things finance ever since her first forays into software, investments and financial markets in Boston. Trained in computer science and engineering, early in her professional life, Kate wrote the code for the first online banking application in the country. When she figured out she was an ultimate "people-person," she left a successful career that included stints at Raytheon, Wells Fargo and Edward Jones to strike out on her own. “I wanted the freedom and creativity to serve my clients how I want to. That’s why I created Ferris Wheel Finance," Kate explains. "I spend real time with my clients and provide customer service far above and beyond anything the traditional investment companies can hope to offer.” As an independent registered investment adviser and financial planner, Kate gets to know each of her clients individually. She assesses their adversity to risk, outlines their goals and helps devise an investment strategy based on her acumen for noticing trends and preserving and growing wealth. “I love the planning aspect of finance,” she says. “In my client interviews, I learn what my clients are trying to achieve then create tailored financial plans for them on customized software. People worry their money will run out, that they will outlive their investments. I completely understand that. Focusing on the planning side helps clients have confidence in their saving and spending. Ferris Wheel Finance is 'high touch.' We talk to all our clients at least every four to six weeks, some every week if they

want. If you call, we answer the phone. Communication is key to the Ferris Wheel Finance way." Kate is especially helpful to current and retired business owners because of her years consulting more than 200 companies on issues of budgeting and finance. “If you are the business owner, you only see your one business, only your numbers, only your mistakes,” she explains. “But I have worked with multiple businesses across multiple industries and have owned my own businesses as well. I have seen many, many financial and investment mistakes and can help retirees and future retirees prevent those pitfalls. This experience offers my clients a breadth

tips I urge younger women to pursue math and aim for excellence. In math, you compete not on a male/female scale, but on an absolute numbers scale. Math and science have opened unbelievable doors for me.

2.

Women need to have confidence. When purchasing a big-ticket item, for example, if you don’t feel comfortable with the deal, you have to trust yourself and not make the purchase.

3.

Fewer than 17 percent of American financial advisers are women. Women are a little more relational, a little more conversational. Thirty years ago, that wasn't appreciated. Today, these qualities are assets.

Women are traditionally better investors than men. They trade less, take fewer risks and do more research. Women should be aware of these factors and be confident in their investing.

WOMEN Building Businesses Gulfcoast Women In Networking

From CBD oil patches to financial services, these Gulfcoast Women turned their experiences and talents into businesses that help others live a better life. NATURAL WELLNESS

IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE

Suffering from fibromyalgia pain, Judy Braham became intrigued when a company that she has been purchasing essential oils from launched a fullspectrum, hemp-derived, transdermal CBD oil patch. Judy purchased the patches to try and was thrilled! Not only was Judy’s pain dramatically reduced, but she was surprised to find she also experienced a more positive mood and increase in energy! The AMÉO ENTUNE CBD OIL SQUARES are organically produced dual release, 24-hour patches that unlike orally ingested CBD oils, do not put stress on the liver. They offer many other benefits including promoting restful sleep, reduction in anxiety and more! AMÉO ENTUNE CBD OIL SQUARES are conveniently delivered directly to your door – no need to leave your own home! Wear the Square – because Healthy Shouldn’t Be Hard!

Stephanie Steffens and Stacey Kroll helped care for their grandmother during the last few years of her life, which in turn gave them an appreciation for the care and support that people need as they age. In 2014 they took this knowledge and turned it into SISTERS FOR SENIORS, an in-home senior care company that provides compassionate caregivers to help seniors with everyday tasks in their homes so they can remain as independent as possible. Caregivers can assist with meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation, bathing safety, medication reminders and companionship. Stephanie and Stacey knew that providing honest, reliable staff that are matched to their clients’ personalities and needs would put them on the road to success – their business has doubled every year since it started!

BE YOUR OWN KIND OF BEAUTIFUL

FINANCIAL PLANNING MADE EASY

After traveling worldwide in 2003, with a photography company doing hair and makeup creating “Hollywood’s Illusion” of perfection, Brandy Lukyanov made it her mission to show people how to shine in their own ways and to break free from the delusions of society. In 2010, she started BEAUTY BY BRANDY LUKYANOV, a salon environment where she creates a person’s own kind of beautiful! Brandy specializes in the latest Haircutting Styles, Customized Hair Coloring, Balayage and Foiling Techniques, Keratin or Brazilian Blowouts and Professional Makeup Application. She feels everyone is remarkable in their own way and loves being able to transform a person into an amazing version of themselves, helping them to feel more confident, inspired and empowered. Her business motto is, “Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful.”

Kate Hyland Mercer started FERRIS WHEEL FINANCE, INC. because she saw a significant need for a financial advisory firm that could clearly communicate with clients, partner collaboratively, and provide education while focusing on pure investing rather than products. Tips from

LOCAL WOMEN LEADERS SHARE THEIR SECRETS OF SUCCESS

Karen Fordham CEO OF VENICE REGIONAL BAYFRONT HEALTH WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES FACING OUR COMMUNITY FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE? We need more mid- to low-income housing for employees in this area. This need is for many businesses in our community. Hospitals need a multidisciplinary group of diversified employees, all of whom are important to running a successful organization. In our community, it has become truly difficult to find affordable housing for these hard-working people who we all depend on. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF? Failure is a good thing. Failure is the real evidence that we have had the courage to try. Expect and accept that failure is a natural part of any forward-looking experience. Learn from it, grow from it and move on. Also, I would tell her to make big decisions quicker. I could have been in this amazing community of Venice years ago if I had learned that lesson earlier. WHAT IS YOUR PERFECT DAY OFF? Taking advantage of the best things we have to do here in our beautiful natural setting. For me, it’s a round of golf at one of our lovely courses or a day out at one of our even lovelier beaches. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR? I really believe that relationships rule all. What matters more than anything else are the people who are a part of our lives. Our family, our friends, our co-workers, the bosses who have mentored us, the employees who depend on us, and most importantly, our patients. We have to put all of these people first every single day. We have to treat them like they are everything to us, because they are. 26

Valerie Powell-Stafford FORMER PRESIDENT AND CEO OF ENGLEWOOD COMMUNITY HOSPITAL. In April, just as this issue went to press, Valerie was named CEO of Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, another HCA facility. Venice Lifestyle thanks Valerie for her service in our community and wishes her well on her next endeavor. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Our hospital’s focus is increasing the level of services we provide to help meet the health care needs of our community. We are continuing our efforts to expand high-quality services to our growing community and to improve the overall health of everyone here. We are one of the safest hospitals in the country, and I am very proud of that. WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES FACING OUR COMMUNITY? Our wonderful community is so attractive to outsiders and newcomers. Therefore, we are on an incredible growth trajectory. We are one of the fastest-growing Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the whole country. Our challenges are— and will continue to be—affordable housing for everyone, school expansion for families and infrastructure for every single resident of the region. FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS ACHIEVED SO MUCH, WHAT CONTINUES TO MOTIVATE YOU? I truly believe in the mission of the work that I—and everyone at Englewood Community Hospital—do. We are here to serve our community. I care about every single one of the patients who come to us, who trust us to care for them and who we have the privilege of caring for every day. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF? You are perfect just the way that you are. All that you need to change is the thought that you have to change. CONTINUED >

Sharon Roush PRESIDENT OF SARASOTA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL – VENICE WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I am working with a team of architects, engineers, contractors and healthcare experts from Sarasota Memorial Hospital to design a new, state-of-the-art hospital in Venice. In addition, I am leading a team to develop all of the operational aspects of the new facility to include human resources, equipment planning, IT and clinical systems, medical staff developments, and policies and licensing/accreditation. YOU HAVE ACHIEVED SO MUCH. WHAT CONTINUES TO MOTIVATE YOU? Our patients. The delivery of high-quality healthcare makes a significant positive impact on their lives. Speaking to patients and hearing their stories is the most inspiring aspect of my work. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF? Pace yourself and maintain a healthy work-life balance. You don’t realize how many years you have ahead of you when you are in your twenties. Early in your career, you should work hard and try to move up the ladder quickly. I tell my younger colleagues to enjoy themselves, do a good job and the promotion will come. WHAT IS YOUR PERFECT DAY OF RELAXATION? I always enjoy a nice, warm, calm day out on the Gulf. Whenever the weather is good, I love a day out there on that water, boating and fishing.

THE

ATLANTA BRAVES. CONGRATULATIONS! WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR MOTIVATION? I am focused on building my practice and becoming the best sports female orthopedist I can possibly be. I love the technology involved in what I do, I love the patients, and I love orthopedics. I love going to work everyday, seeing patients, and operating. I always treat my patients conservatively before I operate. That said, I really do have a passion for surgery. I give my patients the A-Z of what will happen and spend that extra quality time informing them and putting them at ease. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR? Every patient is different and you have to treat everyone individually. That’s why it is called ‘practice.’ I think the best thing I have ever learned is that you should always stay open to getting advice and new ideas from others in the medical community. You should always listen to others. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF? I would tell her, ‘Stay motivated and everything will be okay.’ And always remember to have fun. Go to the beach and hang out, get in the water and paddleboard. What I love about our region is that you don’t have to go far. Venice or Nokomis, I can ride my bike to the beaches. I take my chair with me, and I just go.

Debbie Worsham ESTHETICIAN AT DAVIS & BEYER DENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AFTER A LONG CAREER, WHAT CONTINUES TO MOTIVATE YOU? Motivation comes from my clients. People of all ages like to feel confident in their appearance. I help to guide and educate them with excellent skincare. I learn a lot about life from them, and in that way I get more than I give. I love to see them walk out looking beautiful and confident. HOW DO YOU STAY CURRENT WITH THE CHANGING TRENDS IN YOUR PROFESSION? What sets me apart is that I do custom facials. I’m hands-on and I want to feel my clients’ skin, I want to understand what’s in it, what’s under it, and I want to see what it needs. I have all kinds of different modalities that I use. If I want to drive a certain product like vitamin C into their skin, I can use an ultrasound spatula. It’s a lot of work to stay informed. Almost every night after work, I am on a webinar and learning something new. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR? I am still learning lessons everyday. I stay open to always learning new things. What I know better than anything else is that nobody was put on this earth to make you happy but yourself. Happiness is your own responsibility. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF? Never worry about keeping up with the Joneses. Focus on making great memories with your family, children and all the other people who are important in your life. 30

Our Mother’s House Offers a Bridge to the Future

Charity Offers Two Years of Housing to Single Mothers

SINCE 1987, OUR MOTHER’S HOUSE OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES HAS BEEN OFFERING A HELPING HAND TO HOMELESS MOTHERS IN NEED. A highly specific charity with a clearly defined mission, Our Mother’s House provides two years of housing for single mothers with preschool-age children. During the two years that the mothers are given one of the 22 apartments in Venice currently under the program’s administration, the residents are assigned a caseworker, are expected to work and attend school, and has led to many single homeless mothers completing GEDs and vocational certificates. After leaving Our Mother’s House, some have gone on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees. Our Mother’s House is aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty by offering a two-year window of stability where the women enrolled do not have to worry about housing costs as they build careers and resumes.

Program Director Joyce Scott often speaks at public events about Our Mother's House.

Caseworker Rita Millner has been with the nonprofit for 14 years.

had a job and have always been on assistance. They need the encouragement and life skills advice that we provide. When they come to us, they are at their lowest point; they were homeless. And when they leave us, many go forward and achieve independence, and that is very gratifying.” With a team of three caseworkers, Our Mother’s House checks in with each resident every week. “We visit with the mothers on their time, so if they don’t get home from work until 5:30 p.m., then that’s when we meet," says Sharladene Senko, a caseworker. budgeting and bought her own home when she left here. This has been such fulfilling work for me.” “The best part is seeing the growth. They find employment; their self-esteem truly improves," says Rita Millner, an Our Mother’s House caseworker of 14 years. "These women face so many challenges. Transportation is a big issue. We help them learn how to use the bus system, how to conduct themselves in job interviews. I have watched these women create lives for themselves.” Part-time caseworker Therese Spaude-Larsen has been with the nonprofit for two years and will see her first resident graduate this coming November. “I am really going to miss her,” Therese says. “She is our first Spanish speaker, and I speak Spanish well enough to work with her. She managed to purchase a car and is now a nursing aide. Her dream right now is to transition into a Habitat Home.” Ten percent of Our Mother’s House’s budget is provided by Catholic Charities. The rest comes from local community grants and small donations as the charity accepts no city or state funding. Joyce begins planning every August for Our Mother’s House’s major annual fundraiser, held the last Thursday of every February, and which provides 25 percent of the annual operating budget. Called "Our Mother’s House Wine Tasting, Auction and Dinner Dance," the fundraiser has welcomed more than 350 guests. “Venice is an amazingly giving community,” Joyce says. “For a young woman who finds herself in need of help, there is a continuum of care here in Venice. Our community offers an astonishing array of services and wonderful people willing to help, and we are a part of that.” Our Mother’s House is always welcoming of additional support from our community. “Our mothers come back after they graduate; they show us pictures of their kids,” Joyce says. “It is deeply satisfying work, seeing these women become self-sufficient.” P.O.
