The month of February carries a lot of charm. It’s known for love and romance, thanks to Valentine’s Day, and it’s the shortest month of the year—although it does get a little leap in its step every four years. But here at “Venice City Lifestyle,” February means “Love Local,” and that’s a mission close to our hearts.
We’re lucky to live in a community where there’s so much to love—from the people and places to the businesses and organizations that make Venice extraordinary. This month’s issue is packed with stories celebrating local connections and the spirit of togetherness that makes our city thrive.
We’re starting with a heartfelt goodbye to Venice Police Chief Charlie Thorpe, who retired in January. Former Captain and now Chief Andrew Leisenring is stepping into this pivotal role, and we’re excited to see how he’ll lead the department forward.
On the subject of community care, we’re proud to highlight the work of the Child Protection Center, which recently hosted a statewide training for forensic interviewers. This incredible organization is doing life-changing work for some of our most vulnerable children.
For car enthusiasts, there's something truly thrilling: the legendary race cars of the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida are making their mark in Venice. Celebrate the blend of speed, history, and innovation as these remarkable vehicles roll into town.
Healthcare is an essential part of a thriving community, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice continues to rise to the occasion. With a ribbon cutting for its transformed Emergency Care Center and new five-story Patient Care Tower, it’s meeting local needs with remarkable vision and capacity—and the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation has provided fantastic support all along the way.
And finally, we’re excited to welcome Celebrity Chef Jimmy Nadell to Nokomis. After a brilliant culinary career in Aspen, he’s bringing his passion for food and community to Tuscany Nokomis and beyond. Don’t miss the special recipe he’s shared with us!
Happy February!
P.S. Mark your calendars for four wonderful upcoming events: the YMCA Venice’s “Le Cirque” Black Tie Gala on February 15, Women & Medicine Educational Luncheon on February 19th (we are Media Sponsors), the 36th Annual Venice Italian Feast & Carnival February 20-23 (we are Platinum Sponsors), and Agape Flights’ Annual “Pie in the Sky” open hangar event, “Back to the Future: Celebrating 45 Years of Love in Action,” on March 1.

VPD Chief Charlie Thorpe Retired in January and Former Captain, Now Police Chief Andrew Leisenring, Takes on the Job
In the beginning of December last year, when Venice Police Dept. (VPD) Chief Charlie Thorpe announced he would retire on Jan. 3, 2025, the 30-year law enforcement veteran had nothing but praise for the Venice Police Department.
“I have been honored to serve with the officers and professional staff of the VPD during these last six years,” he said. “They are dedicated people, and we need more people like them.” He also thanked former Chief Tom Mattmuller and City Manager Ed Lavallee for “their part in this adventure.”
Chief Thorpe joined the VPD in December 2018 and was named chief in 2021. Prior to that he spent 27 years with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. He holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Leo University and a master’s degree from USF in Criminal Justice Administration. He and his wife Tammy have two adult children, Shelby and Zack.
Thorpe especially praised the VPD for its teamwork. “What impressed me from the very beginning of my time here in Venice was the collaboration between city departments. From A-Z, every department works exceptionally well together. I will miss being part of this team,” he said.
After Thorpe announced he would retire, City Manager Lavallee called for the promotion of Patrol Division Commander Capt. Andy Leisenring's appointment to Venice Police Chief, saying he was a seasoned leader who is skilled in tactical operations, with strong
administrative skills. On Dec. 10 the Venice City Council unanimously approved the promotion.
As for former Police Chief Thorpe, he will be focusing on his health and time with his family. “If you have been around me for any period of time, you may have heard me say that ‘policing is a dynamic business,” he said. “Some things (last) year have furthered my acceptance that life is a dynamic business as well, and our time is precious,” he added.

CHILD PROTECTION CENTER HOSTS STATEWIDE FORENSIC INTERVIEWER TRAINING
The Child Protection Center, Inc. (CPC) recently hosted statewide Forensic Interviewer training at the Campus of Healing for fifteen Child Protection Team Case Coordinators and law enforcement officers from across Florida.
Forensic interviews are child-friendly, non-leading, and legally sound conversations with alleged victims of child abuse. They are critical in determining whether abuse has occurred. Having Child Protection Team Case Coordinators trained in forensic interviewing alleviates the need for children to be interviewed by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) or at local police stations after an abuse report is made to the FL Abuse Hotline. Streamlining this process through specialized Child Protection Teams reduces the stress and trauma of disclosures. Case Coordinators establish trust, ensure children are comfortable, and gather disclosure details in a safe environment. Each interview is recorded and submitted as evidence.
Professionals from Sarasota, Polk, Brevard, Collier, Escambia, Orlando, Pasco, and Palm Beach completed the specialized 40-hour training, which included instruction and scenario sessions. Assistant State Attorney Ethan Dunn, among the speakers, was recognized by the Department of Health with a Challenge Coin for his work in protecting children.
“We are excited to showcase our North Port Campus of Healing as a training hub,” said Douglas Staley, Executive Director of CPC. “This training is critical to the work of Child Protection Teams and law enforcement statewide. Hosting this reinforces local expertise and creates better consistency statewide. We look forward to educating and training professionals with a focus on the prevention, intervention, and treatment of child abuse.” Learn more at cpcsarasota.org.

Celebrate Speed, History, and Innovation as the Legendary Race Cars of the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida Come Through Town
ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS
Between 60 and 90 world-famous historic and modern race cars will roar into Venice on Sunday, February 23, as part of the inaugural 1000 Miglia Experience FLORIDA 2025.
“These spectacular automobiles will cruise down Venice Ave. to Centennial Park for a time-and-stamp check that's been specially design to incorporate the Venice Centennial Logo, before heading back to Rt. 41 and on to Tampa,” said John McKeon, president of the Venice Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). “Spectators can then get their programs stamped with the same image,” he added.
The entire procession will take about 60–90 minutes, with the Venice AACA Car Club managing logistics for the stop. McKeon noted there will also be exciting festivities for spectators, making it a must-see event for car enthusiasts and lovers of spectacle. Special features at Centennial Park include a performance by the Venice Symphony, race-themed specials at local restaurants, a display of classic cars from the Venice AACA Club, and more.
The Venice stop takes place on the first day of the three-day race, covering nearly 1,000 miles in all. Starting in Miami, the route includes Coral Gables, Naples, Venice, and Tampa on
February 23. The second leg runs from Tampa to Cape Canaveral and West Palm Beach, with the final stage returning to Miami on February 25.

After a tragic incident in 1957, the race was reimagined and relaunched in 1977 as a prestigious regularity competition, focusing on precision, skill, and the preservation of historic cars rather than sheer speed, making it a more measured and spectator-friendly event.

NEWLY TRANSFORMED EMERGENCY CARE CENTER AND STATE-OF-THE-ART FIVE-STORY PATIENT CARE TOWER NOW OPEN
ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS
SMH-Venice has expanded its facilities and services to serve more patients, closer to home.
The rapid growth of South Sarasota County has brought a pressing question into focus: How can healthcare infrastructure keep pace with an aging population and surging demand? For Sarasota Memorial Hospital–Venice (SMH-Venice), the answer lies in ambitious expansion and strategic adaptation.
Opened in late 2021, SMH-Venice quickly became a vital healthcare hub for the community. The hospital reached full capacity within weeks, and the abrupt closure of ShorePoint Health-Venice in 2022 made the demand for additional resources even more urgent. Now, under the leadership of President Sharon Roush, the 65-acre hospital campus on Laurel Road has expanded its facilities and services to serve more patients, closer to home.
In 2024, the hospital unveiled a new five-story patient care tower, nearly doubling its inpatient capacity from 110 to 212 private suites. The new floors include dedicated units for cardiac care and orthopedics, two of the hospital’s most in-demand specialties, ensuring advanced treatments are available locally.
The hospital’s Emergency Care Center (ECC) also underwent a transformation and, in December 2024, revealed 33 new exam rooms for a total of 61. Upgrades also include two resuscitation suites, enhanced imaging facilities, and a centrally located third CT scanner, improving emergency response times and patient comfort.
“From day one, our mission has been to support the health and well-being of our community,” Roush said. “This expansion is a direct response to the overwhelming demand for inpatient and emergency services in South Sarasota County. We’re proud to grow alongside the community and continue providing top-tier care.”
SMH-Venice’s growth extends beyond brick-andmortar improvements. Since opening, it has added more than 400 team members (bringing its total staff to more than 1,500) and continues to recruit as its
facilities expand. These efforts not only strengthen healthcare delivery but also provide significant economic benefits for the region.
All of the hospital’s private patient suites have been thoughtfully designed to enhance the patient experience. Natural light, views of the landscaped campus, local artwork, and warm materials create a healing environment that prioritizes comfort and well-being. Beyond inpatient care, the hospital continues to support the community through programs like its HealthConnection wellness hub, which offers health monitoring, coaching, and wellness activities from its first-floor lobby.
SMH-Venice also partners with local organizations to promote preventive care and wellness. Programs like a Parkinson’s Wellness Club, smoking cessation classes, and the Milk Depot—which collects breast milk for critically ill newborns—showcase the hospital’s commitment to meeting community needs.
As the region’s population grows and ages, SMHVenice is preparing for increased demand for specialized care in areas such as diabetes, heart disease, and other age-related or chronic conditions. The hospital remains focused on expanding its team, facilities, and services to address these challenges and improve the quality of life for its patients.
Recent accolades, such as consecutive “A” grades from The Leapfrog Group and the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Stroke Award, reflect SMHVenice’s dedication to safety and excellence. Looking to the future, the hospital aims to stay ahead of emerging healthcare challenges and maintain its vital role in the community.
As SMH-Venice enters its next chapter, it brings expanded capacity and a forward-thinking approach to healthcare. The hospital remains deeply committed to meeting the evolving needs of its patients. With these efforts, SMH-Venice continues to serve as a lifeline for a healthier, more vibrant South Sarasota County.
We are very proud of our donorcentric way of doing business and excited to engage the philanthropic community in Venice. “ ”
For nearly 50 years, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation (SMHF) has been the fundraising partner to one of the nation’s top hospitals, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH). Through community-driven efforts, SMHF provides critical resources to help ensure SMH continues delivering nationally recognized healthcare, advanced technology, and exceptional patient care. This partnership underscores how vital community support is in keeping our health system strong and accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances.
The Foundation’s impact has been extraordinary. In 2024, SMHF completed a campaign that raised more than $95 million for the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute, including the Millman-Kover Cancer Pavilion on the Sarasota campus, slated to open in 2026. Additionally, the soon-to-open Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute, this spring, promises to drive innovation, research, and physician training—further establishing SMH as a leader in advanced medicine and patient care.
Community support is essential to SMH’s success. While tax revenue, Medicare, and insurance provide a baseline, donations from individuals and businesses enable extraordinary achievements—such as acquiring state-of-the-art medical equipment, expanding research initiatives, supporting staff education, and enhancing patient facilities. As a safety-net hospital,
SMH’s mission to serve all patients, including the uninsured, is bolstered by this generosity.
SMHF’s history reflects its ability to rise to the occasion during times of crisis. From funding PPE and ventilators during the pandemic to supporting SMH employees after hurricanes, the Foundation has consistently ensured the health system remains strong, no matter the challenge.
Since opening in 2021, SMH-Venice has become a cornerstone of the community. As the facility continues to grow, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation has intensified its focus on supporting South County. Plans for new medical campuses in North Port and Wellen Park are underway to meet the region’s growing demand for healthcare services. In Venice, fundraising efforts are gaining momentum, with events like the upcoming Women & Medicine Educational Luncheon on women’s health (see sidebar) fostering community engagement and support for local healthcare.
“We are very proud of our donor-centric way of doing business and excited to engage the philanthropic community in Venice,” said SMHF President Stacey Corley. “Building relationships with community members who have a passion for philanthropy, helping others, and ensuring that excellent healthcare is accessible to all.”

Jimmy Nadell emerged as a celebrity chef during his 20 years in Aspen, Colorado, where he catered to Hollywood’s elite and global political icons. His impressive resume includes hosting intimate dinners for Robert De Niro, Heidi Klum, and Tom Cruise, as well as serving at weddings for Kevin Costner and Vanna White. Chef Jimmy also holds numerous accolades, including two Gold Medal Distinguished Chef Awards from Johnson and Wales University.
Now, the culinary maestro has turned his focus to Florida’s South County, bringing his award-winning expertise and passion for Mediterranean and Italian
Creating Tuscany Nokomis required adapting to the unique culinary landscape of the area. Nadell researched the local dining scene and demographics to shape his vision. “To increase our client base, we needed world-class food, a great atmosphere, and fair prices,” he said. Compared to Aspen, where a typical dinner for two could cost $300, Nokomis and Venice offered a more budget-conscious market. Nadell created a menu that is “fun, flavorful, and affordable,” offering early bird specials for $20.95 and half-price drinks at the bar from 3-6 p.m.
Nadell’s commitment to quality and affordability extends to his ingredients. He works closely with local suppliers, sourcing fresh Florida-raised beef, poultry, and seafood, while emphasizing a farm-to-table concept.
cuisine to his latest venture, Tuscany Nokomis. But how did a chef with such an illustrious career in Aspen find his way to Nokomis? It’s a journey marked by reinvention and a commitment to community.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the hospitality industry ground to a halt. Nadell’s Aspen-based Bravo Fine Catering, which employed more than 100 staff and served high-profile clients, was forced to pause operations. “All private cheffing and catering came to an immediate halt,” Nadell explained. After three months of inactivity, he decided to retire and seek a slower-paced life in the Florida Keys, nearer to his father in Venice.
But retirement didn’t sit well with Nadell. “After two and a half years, I complained to my dad that I was bored and needed some substance in my life,” he said. His father mentioned that a local Italian restaurant, Mama Leone’s, was for sale. The chef, always passionate about Mediterranean cuisine, saw an opportunity. By December 2023, he had purchased the restaurant and transformed it into Tuscany Nokomis, which officially opened in September 2024.
THE TUSCAN GRAND BALLROOM IS A 3,000-SQUAREFOOT EVENT SPACE ADJACENT TO THE TUSCANY NOKOMIS. DESIGNED WITH A STATE-OFTHE-ART 20,000-WATT SOUND SYSTEM, THE BALLROOM HOSTS 250 GUESTS AND OFFERS LIVE ENTERTAINMENT.
“At Tuscany Nokomis, everything is fresh and all-natural, including our cheese, sauces, breads, soups, and desserts,” he shared.
A firm believer in the power of community, Nadell is integrating Tuscany Nokomis into the cultural fabric of Sarasota County. He’s joined the Italian Club of Venice and supports local culinary arts programs to foster the next generation of chefs. Nadell and his fiancée, Judy Gaspar, are also dedicated to philanthropy. During hurricanes, they delivered meals to fire stations, churches, and first responders, and regularly donate to local food banks
Their charitable spirit aligns with Nadell’s belief that small, local restaurants have an essential role in the community. “Consumers are moving away from corporate restaurants and embracing local businesses that use healthier, locally sourced products,” he observed.
Nadell’s ambitions for Nokomis extend beyond Tuscany Nokomis to The Tuscan Grand Ballroom, a 3,000-square-foot event space adjacent to the restaurant. Designed with a state-of-the-art 20,000watt sound system, the ballroom is set to accommodate up to 250 guests for a variety of events, including live entertainment, comedy nights, and themed culinary competitions. A dedicated dance floor and a VIP room enhance the experience, making it a versatile venue for everything from Latin dance nights and country-western themes to private events. “We’re excited to bring something unique to the area,” Nadell said.
Nadell’s culinary philosophy is deeply personal, shaped by decades of experience serving iconic figures.
His 2017 cookbook, “Aspen Celebrity Cuisine”, chronicled his time in Aspen, while his forthcoming book, “My Tuscan Table,” captures the essence of his Italian culinary journey.
Despite his celebrity status, Nadell remains grounded and enthusiastic about his new home. He and Judy enjoy exploring Nokomis Beach, the North Jetty, and local attractions like the Ringling Museum and state parks. “We love attending live concerts and Tampa Bay Lightning games,” Nadell shared.
One of Nadell’s first celebrity events was catering the 1988 premiere of the original “Overboard” movie starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Decades later, his career has come full circle—transitioning from the glitz of Aspen to the charm of Nokomis.
With Tuscany Nokomis thriving and plans for The Tuscan Grand Ballroom underway, Chef Jimmy Nadell has successfully blended world-class cuisine with a deep connection to his new community. It’s a recipe for success, and South County diners are savoring every bite.
Bistecca alla Fiorentina, or “Steak in the Style of Florence,” is one of the most celebrated steak recipes in the world. This Tuscan classic dates back hundreds of years and is traditionally prepared for festive occasions. The steak must be thick, cooked on the bone, and seared over charcoal to achieve a crispy exterior while remaining perfectly medium-rare inside. Recipe serves 4.
INGREDIENTS:
• 4 large Porterhouse, Filet, or New York Strip steaks (on the bone, 2 inches thick, 14–16 oz each)
• 1 cup fresh rosemary and sage leaves, finely chopped
• Good-quality sea salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 2 lemons, cut into wedges for serving
Chef’s Tip: This dish is best enjoyed with a glass of robust Tuscan red wine, such as Chianti Classico, for an authentic Florentine experience.
METHOD:
1. Preheat the grill: Prepare a charcoal grill to a high heat, aiming for an optimal temperature of around 600°F (315°C).
2. Prepare the steaks: Rub each steak generously with olive oil, then season liberally with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
3. Grill the steaks: Place the steaks over the hot charcoal and sear hard to create a crispy, charred crust without burning. Turn as needed to ensure even cooking.
4. Cook to medium-rare: Grill the steaks to an internal temperature of 130–135°F (54–57°C) for medium-rare, approximately 5–7 minutes per side, depending on thickness.
5. Rest the meat: Remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes to retain juices.
6. Finish and serve: Slice the steaks on the bias. Sprinkle generously with chopped rosemary and sage, and finish with a final pinch of sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Serve immediately with lemon wedges for squeezing.

Agape Flights began in 1980 when founders Keith and Clara Starkey felt a divine calling to bring desperately needed supplies to Haiti. Mortgaging their home to purchase a Cessna 411, they launched their first flight just weeks later, embodying a mission of unconditional service that thrives today as “God’s love flights.”
Fast forward to 2024, when Agape Flights delivered more than 110 tons of critical supplies, from ultrasound machines to solar lights and non-perishable food, to missionaries in the Caribbean, according to Communications Director Jacques May. Last year’s Pie in the Sky drew 1,400 attendees, half of whom were visiting for the first time, he added.
“This event is a joy,” said Watkins. “We love welcoming the community to experience the heart of what we do and to learn how they can get involved—whether it’s through private tours, volunteering, or supporting our mission.”
There'll be plenty of pizza (and dessert) pie.

The Venice YMCA will host the 36th Annual Black Tie Gala on Saturday, February 15 at 6 p.m. in the transformed gymnasium located at 701 Center Road. This year’s theme, “Le Cirque,” is meant to honor and celebrate both the heritage of the Venice YMCA and the rich history of the circus in and among the Venice community: past, present, and future.
Black Tie Event on February 15 Honors Heritage: Past, Present & Future
ARTICLE BY JODI ALTSMAN RALL
“The Black Tie Gala will help the Venice YMCA to continue serving children and families in our community,” said executive director Kathryn Custer. That includes providing scholarships for camps, attending preschool at the Early Learning Academy, swimming lessons, and other valued programs, she added.
Special guest and legendary trapeze artist Tito Gaona will take the stage, introducing the evening's "Big Top" performance. For 17 years, Tito captivated audiences with the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus, the Big Apple Circus, and more. Now, his daughter Victoria, a seventh-generation Gaona, carries on the family’s performance legacy.
Tito and his family, “The Flying Gaonas,” are a beloved Venice legacy. His wife, Renatta, and daughter, Victoria, also run the Venice dance studio, Attitudes in Dance. Victoria will join guest artists in a spectacular performance, embodying the family’s storied tradition of excellence in the circus arts.
“I wanted to be a part of this event as we need the circus to continue, just as the community needs the YMCA to continue their efforts,” said Tito.
In addition to the Gaona family performance, The Gala features a lovely dinner catered by Michael’s on East, music and dancing with the Actual Bank Robbers Band, a display of capes and
memorabilia from the Victoria Gaona family along with circus photographs from the Venice Historical Society, and live and silent auctions.
A key moment during the evening will be honoring the founder of the Venice YMCA, Jeanette Hanchey-Flokstra, who passed away in March of 2024. “We are thankful for Jeanette’s legacy. What she helped build in the past is now serving families in the present. Her advocacy and support of the Venice YMCA was steadfast,” said Custer.
Tickets and sponsorships are available at: https://onecau.se/_5wmfy1
The Black Tie Gala is held in support of the Venice YMCA’s vision and mission. That mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Its vision is to build a better future for all.

While stores are filled with Valentine candy, cards and gifts, the thoughtfulness and time put into to a handmade card holds a different meaning. Words are the things we treasure most, so let those you care about most know how you treasure them this Valentine’s Day.
• Kitchen Knife
• Red or Russet Potato (for heart)
• Romaine lettuce (for rose)
• Acrylic Paint
• Paint Brush
• Blank Envelopes
• Blank Cards
• Heart Template (www.silvertoothhome.com/blog/diy-stationery)
• Hand Lettering Template (www.silvertoothhome.com/blog/diy-stationery)
• Light Box
1. Cut the potato in half. Using a small knife, carefully carve a heart shape onto the flat side of the potato. Carve freestyle or use the free template under “DIY Stationery” on the blog at silvertoothhome.com/ blog/diy-stationery. Even when using the template, each carving will come out as unique art like the ones you see here.
2. With a paint brush, apply paint to the heart shape on the potato.
3. Stamp the potato heart onto blank stationery.
4. Set aside until completely dry.
1. Cut the end off of romaine lettuce. Set leaves aside and use the stem.
2. Using a paintbrush, apply paint to the lettuce stem.
3. Stamp the lettuce “rose” onto blank stationery.
4. Set aside until completely dry.
Once your stationery is completely dry it is time to add beautiful Valentine’s Day lettering. If you have beautiful handwriting then draw free hand. If you’re not as confident use a light box and my hand lettering template (found on the blog at silvertoothhome.com/blog/ diy-stationery) to transfer lettering onto the stationery. To do this, first lay the hand lettering template on a light box with the stationery on top. Then trace the hand lettering onto the stationery with a pen or marker of choice.
