March is a season of renewal, and what better way to celebrate than by turning our focus to the places we call home? This month’s issue of “Venice City Lifestyle” is a tribute to the spaces where we create memories, find inspiration, and recharge our spirits. Home is more than walls and a roof; it’s the backdrop of our lives, and this issue explores how design and thoughtful planning can make it even more special.
For all of us in Venice, home isn’t just about where we live—it’s about the community we share. Venice itself is a home, one that unites us with its vibrant charm, stunning coastal beauty, and welcoming spirit. In this issue, we celebrate the many ways our homes—and our hometown—bring us together.
If you’re looking for easy ways to refresh your living space, we’ve gathered ideas that bring vibrancy and warmth to every room. From Sarasota Paint Company’s expert guidance on Benjamin Moore’s stunning colors to the elegant window treatments of Breakwater Home Fashions and the timeless beauty of Rugs as Art, your home can transform with just a few key touches.
For those considering a move or seeking a lifestyle upgrade, The Cottages of Venice offers the perfect balance of charm and convenience with its coastal cottage vibe. And speaking of spaces that grow with you, Jacaranda Trace exemplifies adaptive living, offering residents the flexibility to design a home that suits their evolving needs.
Every home has a story, and so do the people who live within it. We were honored to talk with world-renowned saxophonist Eirinn Abu, who has made Venice his home and shared his passion for music and life. His journey reminds us that home isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling, a connection, a rhythm.
Of course, part of feeling at home is knowing your future is secure. Our feature on elder law provides valuable insights into protecting your family and planning for peace of mind.
Finally, we celebrate the incredible residents of Jacaranda Trace who have reached the milestone of 100 years or more. Their wisdom and resilience remind us that home is where we gather the stories that define us.
As you explore this issue, I hope you find inspiration to make your own home a sanctuary of beauty, comfort, and joy.

For Venice homeowners looking to refresh their interiors, Sarasota Paint Company offers expert guidance and high-quality products. Known for exclusively carrying Benjamin Moore paints and custom-made David Andrew paints, the company recently celebrated the grand opening of its Venice store at 1945 S. Tamiami Trl #A, bringing its trusted expertise even closer to local homeowners.
"Opening in Venice is an exciting step for us," said owner David Jasik, noting that Sarasota Paint Company is Benjamin Moore's largest multi-store distributor on Florida’s west coast. "We’re thrilled to bring Benjamin Moore’s palette and our personalized service to more customers who want to refresh the look of their homes.”
Jasik highlights some of 2025’s standout color trends, emphasizing their ability to bring warmth, style, and a modern touch to homeowners’ spaces.
• Color of the Year: Cinnamon Slate offers a delicate mix of heathered plum and velvety brown, bringing soothing balance to any design.
• Warm Neutrals, Modern Touch: Off-whites and grays dominate, with subtle undertones adding warmth to classic shades. “Sea Salt and Ashwood Moss are perfect for those seeking timeless elegance with a contemporary update,” said Jasik.
• Green as the New Neutral: Green is becoming a versatile choice for everything from kitchen cabinets to study walls. "It’s a fantastic way to add character without overwhelming your space," Jasik said.
• The All-Over Color Trend: Monochromatic rooms are on the rise. "This technique is perfect for creating a modern sanctuary," Jasik noted.
• The Warm Return of Browns: Chocolate tones and leathery browns are returning, pairing beautifully with natural textures like linen or wood to create grounded, luxurious spaces.
• Playful Pink Accents: Subtle pinks add whimsy and charm, whether as accent walls or part of a larger scheme.
Personalized Service for Every Project
At Sarasota Paint, customers gain expert advice tailored to their needs. "We pride ourselves on making every customer feel confident about their choices," Jasik emphasized. "From selecting the perfect palette to tips on application, we’re here to support you."

World-Renowned Saxophonist Eirinn Abu Shares His Passion for Life and Music with the Venice Community
ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS
For saxophonist Eirinn Abu, Venice isn’t just a stop on his music and life journey—it’s the place he’s called home for nearly five years. Over the past decade, Abu has built a connection to the town, performing at art shows and festivals and forming friendships with locals. "Venice and Englewood
“For Eirinn Abu, music is more than sound—it’s a voice, a connection, and a way to inspire others.”
stood out to me as some of the friendliest places I’ve been," he said. "I always gravitate toward communities based on how kind they are."
One defining memory is performing outside the (former) Serene Coastal Interiors in downtown Venice during art festivals. The store's owners invited him to play while they showcased their handmade products. "People walking by thought my music was pre-recorded because I try to sound just like my albums. Crowds gathered, and there was a lot of excitement," he recalled.
Abu’s ability to captivate an audience has been a hallmark of his career. His performances are always about connection. "I want people to feel every emotion—happiness, love, and nostalgia."
His music journey began in Atlanta under the name Jerry D. (his birth name is Jerry Doyle), with early albums like "Sax in the Country." A pivotal moment came when Dolly Parton collaborated with him on a new version of her song "I Will Always Love You."
"Meeting Dolly was surreal," Abu explained. "She hugged me and said, ‘Are you ready to fly like an eagle?’"
“I want people to recognize the songs and feel transported to another time in their lives.”
Dolly’s support opened doors for Abu, and she later sang on three of his albums.
In 1997, Abu committed fully to his passion for music, leaving behind other ventures to focus on recording and performing. He also rebranded, adopting the name "Eirinn Abu" after discovering its Irish roots from an old timer at an Irish Bar. "It was perfect timing for a fresh start and a risk I was willing to take."
Recently named Artist in Residence at the Venice Performing Arts Center (VPAC) Abu mentors young musicians through his program, “It’s About the Music.” His best lesson? To make sure young artists know that pursuing music can be
more than a part-time passion. "Many educators don’t teach how to build a career in music. I want kids to know they can follow their dreams."
With his latest album, "Anthem," Abu reimagines Baby Boomer classics in a way that pulls on heartstrings. "I want people to recognize the songs and feel transported to another time in their lives."
Experience the transformation for yourself when Abu, accompanied by his Grammy-winning band, Miami Sound Machine, perform at VPAC on April 16. Learn more about Eirinn Abu at eirinnabu. com. Find details about his VPAC performance in Events on page 42 and at veniceperformingartscenter.com.
How Elder Law Can Protect Your Future and Family.
One of the most common misconceptions about elder law is that I only serve people of a certain age. This isn’t true at all. I have clients of all ages, from young children with special needs to middle-aged individuals with disabilities, and those dealing with age-related illnesses at 100.
The one thing all my clients share is the need for my services. Families with young children with special needs must establish an estate plan to protect assets and ensure the child qualifies for public benefits like Medicaid. A special needs trust creates a non-countable fund to pay for non-covered needs such as housing, therapies, companion care, and assistive technology, to name a few.
Those receiving social security disability may also need public benefits to cover medical costs beyond what Medicare provides. Disability payments often fall short of living expenses, so families with adult disabled children establish estate plans with special needs trusts to protect inheritances.
This allows access to public benefits like housing or food assistance while the trust helps with additional costs, improving their standard of living. Having a plan in place offers greater security, eases financial stress, and ensures a brighter future for these families.
Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s can create a significant financial burden. My clients’ top concern is how to pay for care when costs exceed their means, leaving them worried about their home, savings, and legacy. With proper preplanning, we protect the well spouse from financial ruin, preserve assets, and qualify the ill spouse for Medicaid. In many cases, we shift income from the ill spouse to the well spouse to maintain their standard of living.
Addressing these challenges requires guidance, but the reward is knowing your loved ones are protected. Planning today for the uncertainties of tomorrow provides peace of mind and ensures a stable future. Learn more at tkbowmanpa.com.

Convivial Jacaranda Trace proudly celebrated its centenarians, honoring six extraordinary women aged 100 and older who have enriched the community with their resilience and wisdom. The event, “Centennial Celebration: A Legacy of Resilience and Wisdom,” featured a special photographic exhibit inspired by Czech photographer Jan Langer’s work, "Faces of a Century."
Chaplain Anne Feibelman curated the project, showcasing timeless portraits juxtaposing the women’s younger selves
with their current images, illustrating the beauty of aging and enduring individuality.
CEO Joel Anderson praised the centenarians as pillars of the community who embody love, life, and laughter. Attendees, including family, friends, and community leaders, celebrated their profound legacies during a heartfelt ceremony, followed by a reception with personalized tributes, light refreshments, and reflections on lives that have witnessed and shaped history.
The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!
By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.
Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house
plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.
Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.
ARTICLE BY SEAN O’KEEFE
Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.
Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls. No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace.
Happy gardening!
