Live to Eat! H
appy February and welcome to our annual "Food" issue! It is one of my favorites because I am one of those people who live to eat. I was a foodie before I knew what a foodie was! It was fun this month to learn more about some new restaurants in our area and try some delicious dishes throughout Vinings and Smyrna. Not sure of where to go eat? Need a new recommendation in the area? Bored with choosing the same thing at your restaurant of choice? This issue is for you! Check out the Top Plates of Vinings for some of our favorite dishes at Vinings area restaurants. You can also read more about the new, sexy restaurant and bar, The Public House, and for some Latin flavor, Front Porch Latin Kitchen. Looking for Valentine's gifts? We've got you covered too. Get the scoop on the ultimate gift from Union Diamond or maybe snag tickets to an Alvin Ailey performance at Atlanta's Fox Theatre. (There will be a Vinings local performing!) Or go to one of my new favorite spots, Lollibop Sweetshop, for a delicious treat. Until next month, I'll see you in carpool at Nickajack, watching youth basketball at the Buckhead YMCA, or savoring an ice cream cone at Bruster's.

nion Diamond, sitting in historic Vinings, is among the few jewelry stores whose master jewelers embrace the art of custom jewelry making. They carry pieces that are designed exclusively for each customer. Most jewelers typically choose a more conventional route by offering mass-manufactured jewelry that may be beautiful but are not unique or very special. That is definitely not the case at Union Diamond! Union Diamond ditches universally available jewelry and opts for exclusive, unbelievably special, made-to-order pieces. They take the time, usually about four to six weeks, to consult with a client, draw sketches using digital software, and then molding the one-of-a-kind setting for precious to semi-precious stones. They also stock a select collection of esteemed jewelry designers’ pieces, including those from local makers, Sara Blaine, Kathryn Q and Benchmark. “The small details differentiate custom pieces of jewelry as well as the creative process between the client and the jeweler. By taking time to listen to the client’s style and ultimate desires, we can create a custom piece to truly reflect and commemorate an engagement or special occasion,” says Jeff McLaurin, who has worked with Union Diamond as a senior jeweler, master jeweler and now current owner. 14
Vinings Lifestyle | February 2016
McLaurin continues, "I truly enjoy taking part in the creative process. And the most gratifying aspect of being a Master Jeweler is educating customers and staff to all the nuances in creating beautiful jewelry." McLaurin's love for customizing sparkling adornments stems back to his childhood. His interest in jewelry began at a very young age and he followed that passion while pursuing a degree at the University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in jewelry. He is a JA-certified jeweler and now has over 20 years in the jewelry business. McLaurin and his staff of industry professionals at Union Diamond — which offers more than 60,000 certified loose diamonds and a wide variety of pieces at competitive prices at its storefront and online (uniondiamond.com)— is becoming the go-to source for those searching for special jewelry pieces including engagement rings, wedding bands and fashion jewelry. Thanks to McLaurin and his team, the brand earned The Knot’s Best of Weddings 2015 and 2016 and WeddingWire’s Couples’ Choice Award for 2015! Word has gotten out nationally and even internationally about Union Diamond. It is one of the first online jewelry stores to have an international presence. They mail jewelry to Australia, Hong Kong and more on a weekly basis.. This gives them experience with customers from all over the world and insight to jewelry's ever-changing trends. From one-on-one consultations to trunk shows showcasing local designers to fun events at its Vinings location, Union Diamond will be a place that rocks Vinings for years to come!

olliBop Sweetshop (lollibopsweetshop.com) is Vinings newest des-
sert haven. It's the place where you can have your peach cobbler as a shake, feast on melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chunk cookies, and inhale strawberry cupcakes bursting with layers of fresh strawberry buttercream. Lollibop's understands selling sweets is about the experience of how the dessert makes you feel, how it smells, and the layers of flavors as you taste it. Open since October, LolliBop Sweetshop is the one stop shop for all things sweet including cookies, ice cream, milk shakes, every candy imaginable and their specialty, shortcakes, which is their more indulgent version of a cupcake. LolliBop will have you singing, “ I want candy” the moment you enter their bright and colorful shop. And candy is just the beginning! Get ready for an eye-closing, OMG moment when you taste LolliBop’s freshly baked goodies. Their signature item, shortcakes, is a unique take on a cupcake. Try the Atomic Stack, a mix of chocolate and vanilla cake topped with fresh banana cream and strawberry buttercream. It's so indulgent you have to eat it with a fork! Welcome to The Public House at Vinings!
One of Vinings newest and hippest restaurants opens in Hotel Indigo Atlanta - Vinings
ARTICLE BY LAURA MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY LEE
L
ocated in the newly-opened Hotel Indigo Atlanta - Vinings, The Public House is an innovative, southern-style restaurant with new approaches to old favorites. Their food, described as uplifting Southern cuisine, offers patrons an array of options from drinks and appetizers to brunch to a stylish, evening dinner. Local is not only a concept to The Public House but also a practice. The restaurant is decorated with items produced or created in Atlanta, and many of the menu items hail from the city as well. Jake’s Ice Cream, for example, created an exclusive flavor, the delicious Bourbon Pecan, exclusively for The Public House. American Spirit Whiskey and Old Fourth Ward, both local distillers, stock the bar with their own bourbon and whiskeys, and signature cocktails don the menu. Peter Hill, Director of Food and Beverage, says the syrups and juices used in the custom drinks are made in-house, and many of the ingredients are fresh from local farms, dairies, and breweries. Executive Chef Clint Shade has made a concerted effort to create something new out of the traditional at The Public House at Vinings. For instance, the bruschetta is served without tomatoes, instead embracing the Southern tradition of tomato jam. The charred ciabatta is topped with spec ham, arugula, and that delicious Southern tomato jam. Another favorite, the Portobello fries, are wedges of mushroom, crusted with herbs, and served with a Southern blue cheese dipping sauce. The restaurant honors the historic whiskey creation in the Vinings area with both menu items, drinks and decor throughout the restaurant and hotel. Another unique dish The Public House offers is the charcuterie & cheese, not seen at many other local restaurants. The charcuterie plate features five meat options, all from Heywood’s Meat Haus in Marietta. The cheese plate contains cheese options from local dairies all over the state. Visitors can also enjoy sharable plates, salads, sandwiches and wraps, a burger bar, and some of the best classically Southern entrees you’ll find anywhere, including a pork chop with 26

sweet potato hash and cider, shrimp and grits with bacon and Vidalia onion, and pork belly. If drinks are what you’re after, the menu is extensive. The handmade cocktails sport one-of-a-kind names and flavors, made with local ingredients and liquors. A section of the menu is dedicated to beer from Georgia, and they even offer wine on tap, as well as a large selection of bottles! The Public House at Vinings is providing the area with a home away from home. It is designed to bring locals and visitors together in a casual, upscale, and sexy setting. You’re sure to find a new favorite dish or an old classic that will keep you coming back for more. Peter Hill, Director of Food and Beverage is proud of the wine on tap system as well as the wide selection of craft beers, whiskey and other liquor.
The Public House at Vinings is located in the Hotel Indigo Atlanta - Vinings hotel at 2857 Paces Ferry Rd, Atlanta, GA, 30339.

I was finally tired of being fat and unhealthy.
After
Diamond Dallas Page (founder and creator of DDP YOGA) first met Jared while in Park City Utah, premiering the documentary “The Resurrection of Jake The Snake” at the Slamdance Film Festival. ext After an extremely emotional screening of the film, Jared was tentatively waiting in line to talk to Dallas, and when he did he said, “I just wanted to thank you for creating DDP YOGA. I’ve been doing it for 9 months and I lost 180 lbs so far.” After over 40 years of being overweight, Jared had managed to lose 300 pounds in just a little over one year, by eating real food, and doing DDP YOGA. His story continues to inspire us all and hopefully it will inspire many, many others that it's never too late to change your life. SCAN TO WATCH JARED’S INCREDIBLE STORY

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT:
PORCH
LIGHT
LATIN KITCHEN
ARTICLE BY KENDRA PIERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
f you’re looking for a fresh dining experience with some Latin flair, stop in Porch Light Latin Kitchen. Porch Light recently opened in the Smyrna Village Green area with a menu
highlighting Latin American flavors with classic touches. Residents have seen Porch Light as a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Owner/Chef Andre Gomez describes it as “part restaurant, part lunch counter and part Latin Quarter deli” but more than anything else, he sees Porch Light as “an experience.” It brings together Chef Andre’s skill in smoking meats, previous restaurant experiences (he’s the former chef de cuisine at Kevin Rathbun Steak), and inspirations of his childhood in Puerto Rico. Vinings Lifestyle asked Chef Andre a few questions to learn more about Porch Light and why locals should check it out.
HOW IS PORCH LIGHT UNIQUE?
"There’s nothing else like it in the area. All of the menu items are hitting the Latin flavors with different ingredients and preparations, keeping true to the Georgia roots. We’re sourcing locally as much as possible with our vegetables and meats, even our drink menus and desserts. We’re an open kitchen with counter seats and no reservations for lunch but full service in the evening. We want you to be part of this experience. "I’m Puerto Rican but there are items on the menu that come from all over Latin America like the Beer Can Chicken Burritos - that’s a Mexican nod. Our Smashed Yuca Mofongo with Duck Confit is another one. Mofongo is usually made with plantains but we’re doing it with yuca and added the classical with the duck confit." WILL THE MENU BE SEASONAL?
"Yes, it’s going to be based on what’s available and the best ingredients out there. We’ll be changing it up about every six weeks or so. Also because we’re a new restaurant, we’re going to be updating the menu based upon customer responses to their favorites." WALK US THROUGH THE MENU. WHERE DO WE START?
THIS HOT, NEW RESTAURANT OFFERS LATIN FLAIR.
"You have to come in and relax with a cocktail from our full-bar menu. Our servers can guide you with something to fit your taste. We have a Tropical Sangria made with coconut rum, the Smyrna Old Fashion made with Savannah88 bourbon, a Mojito made with Old Fourth Ward vodka; all different and local inspired. "Once you have a drink, the servers can help guide you based on what you’re interested in. The whole menu is ala carte and made for sharing. If you’re wanting something a little spicier, just let us know and we can make something that brings the heat. If it’s something you’re introducing your kids to, we can use less heat."
Smashed Yuca Mofongo with Smoked Duck Confit and the crackling An international experience. With either the open concept kitchen seating or table seating, you're home at Porch Light.
MUCH OF THE INSPIRATION FOR THE RESTAURANT IS BASED UPON YOUR EXPERIENCES AND THE COLLABORATIONS THAT COME FROM FAMILIES COOKING TOGETHER, WHO ELSE MAKES UP YOUR FAMILY AT THE RESTAURANT?
"First, my wife is my rock and always part of the team, helping out with whatever she can. Then we have Kati, who is my front of the house manager. And there’s Angel, my sous chef. He’s worked with me for 6 years and like family and just can do anything. These are the frontline but overall, we’re going to have a strong team to support us." JUST FOR FUN, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DISH TO MAKE?
"Something that’s not on the menu. A fried rice with whatever I have around. It might be a special one day." Porch Light Latin Kitchen is located at 300 Village Green Circle SE Smryna, 30080. The lunch hours are Tuesday – Friday 11:45 am – 2:15 pm; Saturday noon – 3:45 pm. Dinner is served 5:15 – 9:45 Tuesday through Saturday; reservations recommended for dinner.
