ife in the Vinings area can easily be a batch of contradictions. It is exciting to hang out with hispters at Hotel Indigo's bar but the area also boasts a serene, almost reverent environment at the Silver Comet Trail. Our area is full of growing families and those whose children have already grown and flown away. Vinings is both spicy and sweet, a mix of all the things I love.

r. Caroline von Fluegge-Chen never did anything by the book. She married late in life, changed careers after a cross country bike trip and spends some of her free time with Love Has No Color, a group that helps children on a Native American reservation in Montana. And, in between all of that, she is the head of Balance Atlanta, a Buckhead chiropractic office where she practices a three-avenue method of treatment. She corrects structural health, performs Brain Core Therapy that treats the symptoms of ADHD, insomnia and other issues, and practices Functional Medicine that restores balance to the chemical bio-markers pertaining to hormonal, gastrointestinal, immunological, cardiovascular and stress-response health. She also has a soft spot for helping teens overcome anxiety and stress. “Kids are struggling and they have so many challenges academically and socially. How do we raise kids to be healthy, confident balanced adults? We can do it with a wellness program.” Part of her interest in teen health stems from watching her stepdaughter, Willow,

16

Vinings Lifestyle | April 2016

and her friends navigate the path to adulthood. Dr. Fluegge-Chen, 49, never worried about getting married. “I had pretty high standards even though I dated plenty. I was planning to cancel my subscription to eHarmony and that was the day that David wrote.” They’ve been married three years. The tight-knit family lives in Vinings. “I love Vinings; I’ve been here since 2001. It has a small-town feel but you have SOHO, Mellow Mushroom, NY Exchange, Banana Republic, Ann Tylor and Barnes & Noble. You can be downtown or up to the mountains easily.” She is often found walking her adorable dog, Louie. “I went to a dog expo and he was with a rescue group sitting in a cage eating a Chic-fil-A waff le fry. I knew I had to have that dog.” Their cat, Comet, was found on the Silver Comet Trail, a place they frequently hike. In between work and her recreational life, she travels, a habit she developed living

overseas as a child. She also loves bike rides, trains for local 10K races, takes spinning classes at FlyWheel, swims at LifeTime Fitness and takes art classes “for no other reason than to get messy, creative and turn off the thinking part of my brain.” She credits her parents for her “go for the gusto” lifestyle. Her father’s advice was to get a good education, a job that pays the bills and make a difference. Her other life lesson came after her mother was diagnosed with lymphoma. “How do you go from being fine and gone six weeks later? I wanted to understand how bodies work and how to create health.” Adding, “I love what I do - helping people become healthier, finding mental and physical balance. I like the challenge. I am not afraid of change, challenges or stretching myself.”

ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. (3 hours 45 min) Mountain-lovers,

rejoice! Asheville, NC is your home-away-from-home for spring break. Lose yourself in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains by renting a cabin getaway. Unforgettable outdoor adventures include zip lining, white water rafting, hiking or exploring myriad waterfalls. Capture a bird’s eye view of Asheville from atop Chimney Rock State Park or take a self-guided Hunger Games tour at DuPont State Forest. Asheville is making waves in the beer and food scene, so don’t overdo it on s’mores at your cabin. Enjoy Asheville’s feast while visiting the mountains. BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA. (4.5 hours) Moss-draped live oaks

and Civil War-era homes adorn the streets of Beaufort, SC, named by The New York Times as one of 2016’s top 52 places to go in the world. Stay in the Landmark Historic District at The Beaufort Inn, which easily accommodates couples or families in luxury. While away the week by visiting Hunting Beach for sand play or views from the pier, touring Beaufort River with a keen eye for dolphin and osprey or soaking up the rich history among the churches, cemeteries, plantations and museums. Finally, please don’t leave the area without a taste of the delicious low country eats. LITTLE ST SIMONS ISLAND. (5 hours) Imagine a private barrier island

off the coast of Georgia with 10,000 acres of natural wonder and not a vehicle in site! Little St Simon's Island beckons nature-lovers to explore their wild side. Unlike many other Georgia barrier islands, LSSI is virtually undeveloped; maintaining the natural ecological state of the island is foremost to the owners and staff. This all-inclusive escape includes a private lodge, meals made of veggies from the organic garden, 7 miles of pristine beaches and a naturalist available to help you explore. In addition to relaxing and frolicking on the beach, families can fish, hike, hunt for shells, kayak and much more.

You Moved to Smyrna. Now what? ARTICLE LAURA MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY AMY LEE

A

mere 10 miles from downtown Atlanta, Smyrna is the perfect mix of suburban and big city – but you already knew that! As a new resident, you’re probably still caught in the middle of unpacking, with barely enough time left at the end of the day to explore your new city. That’s where we here at Vinings Lifestyle come in! One of the most popular cities in North Atlanta, Smyrna is known for its upscale shopping, unique dining, and beautiful public parks. You’re extremely convenient to both I-285 and I-75 as well as the other fair cities of Marietta, Mableton, Sandy Springs, and of course Atlanta's tony Buckhead neighborhood. The Smyrna area is so popular, in fact, that several books have been written about the area. Anne Wainscott-Sargent included Smyrna in her recently released travel guide, "Moving to Atlanta: The Un-Tourist Guide", providing an insider’s guide to this great city.

22

Vinings Lifestyle | April 2016

“The area offers residents many diversions, including outdoor festivals, parades, concerts and farmer’s markets,” Wainscott-Sargent said. A favorite past time of many Smyrna residents is shopping, and there are plenty of options if you share this proclivity! Market Village, opened in 2002, is Smyrna’s unofficial city center. Pedestrian focused, Market Village features more than 40,000 square feet of retail space and plenty of unique boutique stores including a wine store and beer market. Head over to Vinings (which is often called 'Smynings" because of how closely the two areas relate to each other) to wander through the myriad of shops in Vinings Jubilee off Paces Ferry Rd. Want a traditional shopping mall? You're in luck! Cumberland Mall is nearby and has been growing by leaps and bounds with new stores and restaurants opening each month. It offers big box stores such as Macy’s and Costco along with hipster retail options including H&M, Apple, and Forever 21. If trying new restaurants is your thing, then Smyrna is definitely going to be a great place to call home for you! Porch Light Latin Kitchen, Atkins Park Tavern, The Corner Taqueria, and Public House at the new Hotel Indigo are only a sampling of the eclectic restaurants that call the Smyrnaarea home. Locals would also encourage you to try McCray’s Tavern, Hook Line & Schooner, Muss & Turners, and Zama Mexican Cuisine, all incredible restaurants with a loyal following. Tracy Gaudiano, from The Smyrna Team, your Smyrna real estate source, agrees. "There is so much to do in Smyrna with all the new restaurants and shopThe Public House is a great place ping in the area. The new bike for new residents to hang out. share program and wide sidewalks throughout make it a very active community too. We also have easy access to the airport and downtown. Best of all the new Braves stadium will be right here!" Smyrna saw its first influx of pioneers in 1832, which means there are plenty of historic sites for new residents to see and learn about. Begin

at the Smyrna Museum, located in a replica of the 1910 Smyrna Train Depot, and view the thousands of photographs, publications, artifacts, and other materials. Then make your way to the Smyrna Memorial Cemetery, established in the years between 1838 and 1848. Don’t forget the Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection and Display, a small group of papers and artifacts displayed at three separate areas around Smyrna. Lastly, let’s get outside. The Smyrna area is ripe with parks, greenways, and national recreation areas. Make sure to visit the Aline Wolfe Adult Recreation Center, Brinkley Park, Taylor-Brawner Park, and Jonquil Park for playgrounds, walking trails, and sports fields. Gaudiano believes the secret spot many locals don't know about is the River Line Historic area. It's easy to relax in the shade at She explains "it is a great park with Taylor-Brawner Park. soccer fields, walking trails, playgrounds and civil war era remnants." Moving to a new city can be difficult, but Smyrna’s array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options makes it easy to feel at home.

T

he entrepreneurship bug has bitten more than just a few over the past decade, and

the numbers continue to climb. With more than 500,000 new start-ups rolling out each month, small business owners are vital contributors to our economy, but they haven’t reached this peak alone. Two local culinary entrepreneurs — one an acclaimed James Beard Nominee chef and the other a mompreneur with a dream — are proving this fact to be true. Los Angeles-born baker Shiana White, who now calls Atlanta home, has teamed up with renowned culinary genius and Vinings local G. Garvin, to take her made-to-order baking business, A Haute Cookie, to the next level. She wants her unique line of customizable gourmet goodies to be a household name; while Garvin is enjoying White's exclusive creations as additions to his brand. “He’s known in the food industry, so the exposure that he gives my product means the most to me,” says White, whose company was built around the concept of cookie cravers being able to create their own cookies based on their whims. A Haute Cookie lets sweets lovers choose their favorite cookie dough, as well as an array of high-end add-ins, including chocolates, candies, dried fruits, and nuts. Brownies, ice cream sandwiches, cookie cakes and more are also on A Haute Cookie’s menu. White sums it up best, “you don’t have to walk up to a bakery case and choose what’s already prepared. Here, you can create whatever you’re in the mood for at that moment.” Although the mom-of-four, who started her cookie company in 2012, was experiencing quite a bit of success from Haute’s inception — inquiries from Sugar Factory in Las Vegas, numerous orders that equated to sold-out

any locals have probably passed by Englishman's Fine Furniture on Atlanta Rd and wondered about the uniquely-designed

building. What is in it? What kind of furniture does it sell? Are the pieces really from England? To help answer these questions (and more) Vinings Lifestyle sat down with Anita Vreeland, president of marketing and design at Englishman's Fine Furniture, to learn more about this interesting store. VL: ARE THERE ANY EXCITING NEW COLLECTIONS WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? EFF: We are excited about the new furniture com-

ing in for our Charles Ashton collection. Michael Howarth, owner of Englishman’s, has been working closely with the factory to achieve the right look and color. We are looking forward to unveiling it in July. VL: HOW DID YOUR FAMILY GET INTO THE FURNITURE BUSINESS? EFF: Michael Howarth, owner of Englishman’s and

my father, has a very long history in the furniture business. He started selling antiques in London when he was 19 years old. Michael started working as what is known in England as a spotter and runner to antique dealers. This is how he got his education in the furniture business – streetwise product knowledge. Michael then began Howarth Antiques and started selling products within England and then importing to the United States. He would scour the countryside of England and Europe to find products. My parents, sister (Joanne) and I moved from England in 1981 when my father came over to run an antiques auction gallery. Englishman’s is a family business started by my parents, Michael and Christine Howarth back in 1991, and 25 years later we are still going. It is still a family run business. My parents are still around the store most days, and my brother-in-law, Kevin, and I are now more involved in the everyday running of the business. We are assisted by my cousin, Adel, and three other longtime employees; Donna, Darren and Ann, that feel more like family than work colleagues. We have been very blessed over the years with great staff and customers. We wouldn’t be here without them. VL: HOW DO YOU KEEP THE "ENGLISH" IN ENGLISHMAN'S FINE FURNISHINGS? Giving Back

Jeff Wigbels Honored at American Cancer Society's Hope Ball ARTICLE SUE COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

2016 Hope Award Recipient, Jeff Wigbels

J

eff Wigbels is a long time surfer, triathlete, marathon runner, golfer and skier. He never played football. Yet when he refers to one of the most important persons in his life, he calls Dr. Roy S. Herbst, his “quarterback.” It was this energetic quarterback who led the powerful offense on Jeff’s battle against stage four non-smoker lung cancer, making accurate and aggressive calls and staying mobile with his thinking to meet the fierce cancers every malignant maneuver. Nine years ago, while he and his wife Tiffany welcomed their second child, another doctor told Jeff he had a lung tumor the size of a baseball. He had never smoked. He faced death twice, but never lost sight of the goal, charging toward good health with intense optimism, vehement strength and ardent support from friends, colleagues and family. Dr. Herbst and the team called in pharmaceutical powerhouse players and thanks to the success of a trial drug (now FDA approved), and targeted therapies, Jeff has been cancer free since. He and Tiffany and their kids, Jack and Ava, live in Buckhead and he is senior vice president at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s 2016 Hope Award at the annual Hope Ball later this month. “When thinking of who our honoree would be for the 2016 Hope Ball, we wanted to connect the mission of the American Cancer Society, the passion found within those that want to make a difference in the fight, and a story that inspires and brings hope to the future. Let's just say we hit the lottery when we asked Jeff and his family if they would allow us to honor him with this award.” says Shari Henning, executive vice president and south Atlantic division operating officer for the ACS. His story is miraculous, but the wonder and work continue. The power of Jeff’s determination and close network of influential doctors and important researchers he met during his treatment and recovery has empowered him to help hundreds of other cancer patients - friends, friends of friends, colleagues, cousins of colleagues and more. “I can talk to them about the process, about going to places like Yale, Mass General, MD Anderson and others, what 32

questions to ask to find out exactly what sort of cancer they have and how to attack it,” says Jeff. Together with the world’s top lung cancer researchers, hospitals, clinics and physicians, as a patient advocate Jeff is pushing trials and education for targeted therapy as an option to standard care. This is individualized and aggressive care to fight cancer. “We’re one of more than a dozen Dream Teams launched by Stand Up 2 Cancer and The American Cancer Society and funded by individuals or collaboration, innovation, acceleration, targeted therapy, and translational research,” explains Jeff. He’s passionate about this. And, about everything in his life. Always has been. He’s served on numerous boards (locally for the High Museum and Atlanta Ballet); lectured at his alma mater, Penn State University Graduate School of Business (he’s a member of the Wharton Alumni Club here); and launched foundations for veterans, athletes and lung cancer research all while managing a very successful career in Wealth Asset Management with Morgan Stanley where he’s been for 33 years. It’s for this tenacity and dedication to lung cancer research that Jeff Wigbels is being honored by the American Cancer Society. “Jeff’s dedication to both fundraising to find a cure as well as his compassion to help others who have heard those same words -- ‘You have cancer’-- fit all to perfectly into the night we have planned to celebrate and honor him, Tiffany, Ava and Jack,” says Henning.

Adjusting to Spring TIPS TO HELP DEAL WITH THE ACHES AND ALLERGIES OF A SOUTHERN SPRING

ARTICLE MARY WELCH PHOTOGRAPHY NINA PARKER PHOTOGRAPHY

“O

ur bodies were meant to go outside and meant to do work,” says Dr. Don N. Parkerson, Jr., of the HP Spine Center. “So our goal is to help patients be able to adapt to the environment, especially when there are changes in barometric pressure. And, because we’re in the South with the pollen, people have it tougher.” Dr. Parkerson says that headaches and migraines are often caused by seasonal weather changes that can be effectively and safely treated with chiropractic care. Dr. Parkerson and his colleagues, Dr. C Wayne Neal and Dr. Drew Sutherland, practice a very specialized form of chiropractic treatment called orthospinology. Orthospinology is the science of providing a precise instrument adjustment in the upper neck where the brain and the spinal cord meet. This area controls all of the body’s automatic functions such as breathing, blood circulation, digestion and posture. “Orthospinology has been our specialty since day one. Less than 2 percent of all chiropractors practice this because you have to be board certified and have a post graduate education,” he says. “The majority of our patients are people who haven’t been helped by traditional chiropractic techniques or are scared of having their neck twisted or manipulated. Ninety-nine percent of our patients come from referrals of existing patients.” Dr. Parkerson says that in most cases headaches and migraines are caused by the

“distorted nerve flow and blood flow between the head and neck. Depending on how long the patient has had the problem will determine how long it takes for the body to change.” Of course, springtime brings more than pollen and weather-induced headaches. As we lumber out of the winter cave to spring we start digging in the garden, doing spring cleaning and playing outdoor sports — all of which can cause lower back issues. “More than 50 percent of our cases are patients with lower back problems including herniated discs and sciatic nerve issues. And again, in order to correct the bottom of the spine, it is necessary to balance the top of the spine.” If someone feels lower back pain as a result of an activity, the first thing to do is ice it, he says. “If the pain persists, then a spinal evaluation is necessary and we can restore the patient’s well being.” Dr. Parkerson continues, “our patients often have serious spinal conditions or headaches and they haven’t gotten any relief. They may want to avoid surgery or taking pain killers. They have not had relief from other chiropractors but they all come here and we made it our mission to help them. Orthospinology is exceptionally safe, gentle and noninvasive. And, with proper nutrition, exercise and sleep we can focus on restoring the proper nerve function to the brain and spinal chord. That’s how we create a foundation of health.” No matter the season, the HP Spine Center can help get you adjusted to it!

H

P Spine Center, located at 2424 Herodian Way in Smyrna, was founded in 1951 by Dr. J.K. Humber. From the start, the mission

has been to “serve God by helping his people find health and hope.” “We have three doctors in the clinic and we’re all like-minded in that we see this clinic as our mission field,” says Dr. Parkerson. “There is a world of people hurting who have lost hope and think that living with pain is permanent for them. Our mission is to help them and help them find hope.” Born in Eastman, Ga., Dr. Parkerson has lived in Smyrna the last 22 years. He and his wife of 18 years, Julie, a pharmacist, have two children, Sadie, 10 and Micah, 7 who attend Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. The Parkersons are faithful members of Mount Paran Church.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS OF VININGS

H

ave you ever wondered how our community of Vinings came to be? It all started in the 1830's when a tar heel transplant named Hardy Pace began offering a ferry service to help shuttle folks across the Chattahoochee River in Vinings. Hardy eventually owned 10,000 acres of land from Vinings to Buckhead, along with a farm, grist mill and a tavern. He could ferry you across the Hooch in less time than it takes to order a caprese salad at Canoe. Paces Ferry lives on today as one of the main street thoroughfares in Vinings. Development steadily advanced across the South in the mid-1800's until a passing visitor from the North named Sherman paid a visit to Vinings on his tour through Georgia. Topping Signal Mountain in July of 1864, where the Vinings Overlook office tower now perches, Sherman laid eyes on Atlanta for the first time. Union soldiers, under the command of General Ollie Howard, established their headquarters in Hardy’s beautiful seventeen room antebellum home in Vinings and lodged there for eleven days while planning Atlanta’s landscape redesign. The army ensconced in his ancestral home prompted Hardy to take a spontaneous summer trip with his family down to the gnat-line in Milledgeville. There are disputed accounts of how he died later that year. In any event, after the Union soldiers enjoyed a comfortable respite at the commandeered Pace estate, they mustered for their march south and lingered just long enough to leave the Pace family a tip. Unfortunately, it was the tip of a match which was then lit and used to burn Hardy’s family home to the ground. Later, when Hardy’s children, returned to Vinings, prospects of a long-term ferry business were fading and progress soon demanded the construction of a bridge across the Chattahoochee

River (now ‘Hermi’s Bridge’). The dividing line of Fulton and Cobb counties runs right down the middle of the river. However, Fulton County was stuck paying for three-fourths of the bridge and Cobb only paid one-fourth; perhaps foreshadowing the fiscal hawkishness that would be a hallmark of Cobb County governance for many years! My parents drove over that wooden-slatted bridge when they moved their family into Vinings over four decades ago. At the time, their friends were alarmed by their risky decision, saying things like: “You’re moving out to the sticks!” “What will your children do out there in the country?” “That place is too far from the city to ever become developed.” Well. Many of those overly-opinionated critics now live in Woodstock, Canton, John’s Creek, and Alpharetta - cities many consider to be more appropriately categorized as lower Tennessee. But, then again, perhaps one day our descendants will consider Chattanooga to be a north Atlanta suburb! There is much to love in this remote country outpost of Vinings: friendly families, beautiful homes, outstanding restaurants, great shopping, world class schools, dynamic churches, spectacular performing arts venues, exciting sports activities and a world of other things to experience within our scenic enclave, just minutes from the big city. It is not too shabby a coming-of-age for that quiet countryside whose remoteness once engendered such alarm! As fate would have it, this southern boy found the love of his life in upstate New York, married her and brought her safely back across the Mason-Dixon line to live in Vinings. I trust her implicitly, but since one can never be certain of where latent and distant loyalties lie, I insist on maintaining possession of all of the matches.
