raveling is one of my most favorite things to do. I love exploring new spaces and tasting the local flavors of places near and far. Whether I was in France or the Caribbean or on one of the lesser traveled roads of Georgia, I've relished the adventure of travel. Now, I mostly travel with my family of six in tow, which is both fantastic and painstaking at the same time. We are all creating memories with each trip though, and they will live Maria and family on a recent on long after we are back home. One wonder-filled smile trip to Beech Mountain. is worth the hard work it took to get there. And yes, sometimes travel can be work. For those road warriors who travel for their job, check out our story on "Making Business Travel Pleasurable". To prepare yourself to deal with travel adversities, be sure to read "When Travel Goes Wrong". If you are looking for some inspiration for your next trip, the stories on walking through Japan or visiting El Paso may give you some unique ideas. Also read "Worth the Trip" for some unforgettable travel options both near and far. As we move slowly into the steaminess of our Southern summer, I wish you a cool breeze through your window and an ice-filled drink in your hand. Until next month, I'll see you getting frozen yogurt at Sub Zero, taking advantage of the outdoor pool at the Buckhead YMCA or enjoying a frozen margarita at Zama's.

had suffered a very late-term miscarriage in October 2012. The loss resulted in depression, anxiety, and a huge body image problem to go along with the extra weight. I have struggled with my weight on and off since my mid 20's. I've gained, I've lost and I've gained again. Each time trying a new n diet, a new gym, or a new home fitness program, but nothing seemed to last. In March of 2013 my husband showed me Arthur Boorman's inspirational video and I haven't looked back since. I started DDP YOGA on April 1st, and within 3 months I had already lost lo 41 pounds. Two months after that I lost a total of 60 pounds and dropped from a size 18 to a size 6! Almost 3 years later the weight is still off and I'm GROUP stronger, leaner, and more flexible than ever.

eauty. Brains. Athleticism. Nylah Boone embodies this trifecta of personal characteristics. The senior at Campbell High School is in the International Baccalaureate Program and has excelled there in every way. She has maintained a 3.89 GPA, while competing in varsity and AAU volleyball. She is also an active member in her church, Mount Paran Church, serves her local community, and even traveled to Bolivia for missionary work. The oldest of three children, Nylah is often called upon to set a good example for her younger siblings and those she mentors at school and in her neighborhood. When she is not studying or practicing, Nylah loves traveling, reading, and singing. And she has a very unique skill...playing her ukulele! Nylah was born in Virginia, but has made Cobb County and the Smyrna area her home with her family for the past 16 years. She credits her parents for emphasizing the importance of putting her best foot forward at all times. Unlike most teenagers, she carefully considers her words and shows a maturity far beyond her years. She is diligently working towards her goals in life with a spirit of inclusion, compassion, love, and respect. Nylah speaks Spanish fluently and wants to leverage her bilingualism in college and beyond. Nylah plans to study Biological Basis of Behavior and minor in Spanish. Her goal is to do field work and research as a Behavioral Neurologist in the United States as well as in Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. With this impressive background, it is no surprise Nylah is four for four when it comes to college acceptances. So far, she has received acceptance letters from University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Boston University, and University of Virginia. She is still awaiting decision letters from Georgetown, Columbia, Brown, and University of Pennsylvania. Nylah's goal is to use her skills, time and talents to make a difference in the lives of others around the world. With this impressive start, there is no doubt she will. acation time is precious. It is a rare and valuable thing. Use it wisely! Whether it is a family road trip, a girls' trip that's been
planned for years or a spontaneous getaway for two, there are so many places in this world to see. To help Vinings Lifestyle readers find destinations that are worthy of using that precious vacation time, we put together a list of three unique vacation spots that are close to Vinings ("Here"), some that are not too far away ("Near"), and others that may be far but are worth it ("Worth the Trip").

outdoor adventures include Sky Trek, a 600-foot long bridge suspended 180 feet over Snake Creek Gorge, GPS Trek courses, two aerial adventure parks and a 100-foot power free fall. For smaller thrill-seekers, a two-tiered obstacle course adventure is available exclusively for children ages four and up. After a fun-filled day, plan to stay the night at the treehouse village nestled about 70 feet above the gorge setting. This “high rise” just opened in March 2016. Overnight guests can dare to branch out from traditional accommodations and channel their inner Swiss Family Robinson as the treehouses are only accessible by rope and wood sky bridges. TURKS AND CAICOS
To get WAY off the beaten path, why not find the way to Turks and Caicos? While it's Caribbean counterparts like Jamaica and the Bahamas might get more press, the appeal of Turks and Caicos is that it is a beautiful, pristine, unblemished paradise. Turks and Caicos is a series of islands in the Atlantic Ocean just southeast of the Bahamas. It is a quick 2.5 hour flight from Atlanta and Delta flies direct. Fly into Providenciales and enjoy the expansive Grace Bay Beach, with luxury resorts, shops and restaurants. It's no wonder that Grace Bay was recently voted the "Best Beach in the World" by Trip Adviser. Families can stay at the super family-friendly all-inclusive, Beaches Resorts, for one-stop entertainment, dining, and accommodations for all ages. For those who don't want the all-inclusive package, check out the many luxury hotels lining Grace Bay including both boutique and sprawling resorts, such as Seven Stars Resort. Enjoy their famous stretches of uncrowded beaches and vibrant coral reefs or simply just relax in the refined beauty of these islands. May 2016 | Vinings Lifestyle

This is the daily scene at the Shinto-Buddhist shrine resting atop a long series of stone steps on Mt. Haguro-san, where you can visit while touring the northern parts of Japan. With Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka being the more familiar tourist destinations in the country, the northerly regions afford a unique travel experience, far-removed from the fast-paced fancy cars and lit-up signboards synonymous with city life depicted in movies and shows. There are many ways to explore the Land of the Rising Sun, authentic among them being a journey with Walk Japan, hiking and trekking through smaller villages and towns, indulging in the beautiful and iconic scenery of the Tohoku region, wandering along the rugged Sea of Japan coast and all the while, enjoying encounters of the friendly kind. The Japanese are thrilled when foreigners visit to learn about their culture and lifestyle, and take great pride in sharing their home and country with others. English is not very widely spoken outside of the large cities so a tour guide is highly recommended. Much of Japan is mountainous and hilly, and most areas made accessible with an intricate web of walkways, stairs, trails and more. Coastal areas like Matsushima and the island of Sado-ga-shima are accessed through the waterways – jetfoil and ferry being common modes of transport. You will be inspired by some of the greatest scenery to be found in Japan including this, one of the classic Three Views of Japan – the pine-clad islands of Matsushima are a delight. The bustling port brings in visitors and tourists alike. Sado-ga-shima, on the other hand, once a place of exile for enemies of the land, today gives guests the opportunity to enjoy quiet coastal life and local delicacies as well as a chance to understand its past glory when it was a booming gold mining town. The crested ibis, once found here in abundance, is now no more a common sight but locals hold it in high esteem, and its likeness is seen on products in the area. Another aspect to the tourism in these areas is the historic relevance of local sites. Hiraizumi, Japan’s latest UNESCO world heritage site, featuring the Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji temples, provides an inkling of the area’s past splendor, once considered to rival that of Kyoto. Motsu-ji has been restored to its 12th century grandeur and Chuson-ji includes the Golden Hall - one of the most elaborately decorated Buddhist structures in Japan. The gardens here are simply spectacular, and the chrysanthemum festival is a must-visit. Traditional inns, called ryokans, are a great way to experience Japanese culture. Upon entering your room, a desk and floor-level chair sitting on a series of mats covering the floor greet you. Closet space along the walls of the room hold all the furniture required to create the space you want. When at dinner, staff put out a bed for you to sleep in – this is the Japanese style of space-saving furniture. CONTINUED >

Casual robes known as yukatas are provided at most inns, especially those that offer a thermal hot spring bath or onsen. They are colorful, patterned and tied together with a belt, sometimes even featuring a jacket that goes over. It is acceptable to stroll around the premises in this outfit, whether dining at the restaurant or heading for a bath. The onsens are public bathhouses and the relaxing hot water baths here are said to have healing powers because of their mineral-rich composition. Although sushi, sashimi and many other Japanese dishes have become staples in America, regional Japanese cuisine is strongly influenced by seasonal ingredients including many pickled vegetables, raw and broth-cooked meats and seafood. Red bean snacks and desserts are commonly found, and are a favorite. A formal dinner spread usually consists of multiple courses, with each course offering an array of bite-sized to personal-size portions. You will love eating and walking your way through Northern Japan! Want more information? Check out WalkJapan.com.

EL PASO

f we said “Let’s go to the birthplace of the margarita!” who wouldn’t sign up? If we said “Let’s go to El Paso!” the answer might be “Why?” The “why” is that it’s the home of the margarita. But that’s not the only reason. El Paso offers quite a bit to visitors. Located on the border of Mexico, next to the Rio Grande and a stone’s throw from New Mexico, El Paso is a hidden Texan gem that is worth a trip to discover its history, scenery (it has the only mountain in Texas), the food, the arts and the friendly nature of its citizens. Since many people probably don’t know much about El Paso, let’s go through the chamber of commerce spiel before discussing what makes El Paso so special. It has 300 days of sunny
weather a year, was named the safest large city with a population of more than 500,000 for four consecutive years, is third best city to raise a family and if you’re a 20-something looking to move, El Paso is one of the top 29 cities for you. There are several things that contribute to El Paso being an undiscovered tourist location. First is its history. The Mission
Trail is here; Billy the Kid is buried nearby (as is his killer); and there are remanents of El Paso’s involvement in the Mexican Revolution and the building of early railroads. The railroads, built by Chinese workers, help to contribute to the unique cuisine that comes with the blending of Mexican, Chinese, American and Mediterranean traits. There is a lot of history, but perhaps the best thing about El Paso is that it wants tourists. The citizens have come together, put their money where their mouth is and passed bond referendums to make the downtown more exciting. For instance, a block or two from our Doubletree Hotel is the Southwest University Park, home of the El Paso Chihuahuas, a Triple A baseball team. Come on, who can’t love a team whose mascot is an odd looking chihuahua with the scary motto “Fear the ears!” Yes, El Paso can take a joke! Also part of this arts and sports downtown renovation is the Plaza Theater built in 1929. After years of success and finally decline, in a story similar to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, the theater was slated to be turned into a parking lot. Heartbroken — and mad — the El Paso Community Foundation raised money and saved the building. We saw an excellent production of “Wicked” but what is also charming is that the Plaza opens to a courtyard where attendees can dine pre-show al fresco. The citizens also wanted arts and not only in its several nationally renowned museums; they wanted it all around. While walking or driving through the city, underpasses, bus stops, building walls have beautiful hand-painted murals that bring a touch of culture to an urban eyesight. In addition, there seems to be a festival, celebration or food truck gathering weekly, which makes it a great way to soak up the history, music, art, food and energy of Sun City. Our trip to El Paso showed the city’s diversity. One night we traveled outside the city for a real cowboy experience at the Cattleman’s Steakhouse situated on the Indian Cliffs Ranch. Take the hayride out to the desert and watch the setting sun before having some of the best steaks around. The somewhat unsettling highlight of the evening was watching coyotes come to the windows. Their primal energ y was mesmerizing and the restaurant feeds them so they won’t attack the various animals that are kept on the ranch for visitors, such as bunnies and peacocks. On the opposite end of our cowboy experience was a trip to Zin Valle Vineyards, El Paso’s only winery. Although they grow some grape varieties, a large portion were grown on Ted Turner’s New Mexican vineyards. We purchased the zin and the sparking wine. Yes, everyone has been to San Antonio or Austin. Everyone knows those Texas cities. We suggest you aim for the undiscovered city of El Paso. You’ll delight in the culture, cuisine, and scenic beauty, but mostly you’ll enjoy having have everyone’s attention when you say what you did on your vacation. May 2016 | Vinings Lifestyle

Making Business Travel
P leasurable FIVE TIPS FROM A ROAD WARRIOR
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KENDRA PIERSON
W
hether you are a road warrior or someone who takes the occasional business trip, you know that business travel can be more work than your normal day in the office. You are probably in an unfamiliar location with an unfamiliar routine and you probably had to deal with the hassles of flying through several airports to get there. However business travel doesn't have to be all drudgery. Check out these five tips for mixing a little pleasure into your business travel from a seasoned business traveler. 1. DO YOUR RESEARCH IN ADVANCE.
Look over your agenda and figure out what’s near your hotel in advance of your trip. I was in Austin, TX recently which has a great food scene, but I only ate in the hotel restaurant because I was too overwhelmed to look for some place else after my meeting was finished. If I had taken a few minutes before my trip and located a list of nearby restaurants, I would have found a great place to spice up my night. 2. ADD ON A DAY OR TWO AT THE BEGINNING OR END OF YOUR TRIP.
Many employers allow employees to fly in or out on their own schedule as long as they pay for their own accommodations and meals during the personal time. During a trip to Southeast Asia, I rerouted my plane ticket to include an 18 hour layover in Toyko, as opposed to flying directly back to the US. This didn’t cost anything extra but allowed me to visit Toyko for the day! Amazing! 3. EXPLORE YOUR SURROUNDINGS.
If you’re in a city center, there are probably some great attractions right outside your hotel door. On a trip to San Francisco, I took a cable car to my meeting one day. It’s normally a tourist attraction 32

but at 8:00 a.m., it wasn’t full and I had an authentic San Francisco experience. And I got to my meeting on time. 4. TRY NEW THINGS.
Instead of the usual chain hotel, consider a local boutique property. The 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky has a contemporary art museum right on site. After returning from a client meeting, I was able to unwind and soak in a little culture at the end of the day without having to leave my hotel. 5. ENJOY THE CITY YOU'RE IN.
Instead of checking email on your way into the city, look at the scenery and have a conversation with your driver. Or why not take local transportation from the airport? Hop on the BART in the Bay Area or the 'El' in Chicago. You can get good insight into the city culture and might even beat the taxis. While the focus of your trip is business of course, once you've completed your work, try to add a little fun into your trip. Business travel can be exciting and not nearly the chore some make it seem.

before your child leaves. Then, put a camp box in their room where you can start dropping supplies as you pick them up, (or find them scattered throughout the house). So when you come across that headlamp in the kitchen drawer, because of course that’s where it belongs, just drop it in the box. Starting early can help take the stress out of getting all the gear together the week before. GO SHOPPING.
No matter if it’s your child’s first camp experience, or their 10th, an annual shopping trip for camp can get them excited about the experience. Just remember, don’t buy anything expensive and don’t send kids with anything that can’t get dirty or lost. If you want it returned, label it. ASSEMBLE CARE PACKAGES.
While you are shopping for camp gear, have the kids pick out a few items they’d like in their care package too. Toby Grady with Camp Evergreen suggests items that can be shared or played in a group such as travel games, autograph pillow cases, temporary tattoos, fake mustaches, mad libs, craft kits, a hackey sack

or Frisbee. My boys always liked the fantasy game cards like Pokemon, Magic Cards, etc. Photo courtesy of Camp Evergreen. PRACTICE INDEPENDENCE.
If this is your child’s first camp experience, do a trial run at a friend or relative’s house, preferably someone they don’t know too well. Don’t allow them phone contact, and see how they do. Afterwards, talk to them about how they felt being separated from home. Reassure them it’s OK to be a little homesick at camp, but they’ll get through it, and don’t offer to bring them home early. Shawn Mayler of Camp Rockmont for Boys says parents promising pick-up deals only complicate the developmental process. Working
