Happy Father's Day! J
une is celebration time at my house! We celebrate both my husband's birthday and Father's Day, as well as the freedom that the lack of school schedules gives us. I love this time of year! I love the balmy summer nights spent sipping a frosty drink, and I even love the sweltering summer days (all the better to stay at the pool). Summer, even in the South, is still my favorite season. Maria Smith, with CongressThis month, we are introducing you to several men man David Scott. Photo credit: from our community who represent the "Real Men of Kimberly Dejanovich Smyrna and Vinings". They are present, loving fathers and husbands, devoted to their work and true assets to anyone who knows them. While we could have included thousands more, these men are a small example of all the wonderful men who live, work, and play in Smyrna and Vinings everyday. As this is our men's issue, we are giving the guys some things to talk about. From a review of the new Tesla, to tips in the art of grooming, to a story on stunning golf locations around the world, there is sure to be something to catch your fancy. We also have a personal look at Congressman David Scott. And be sure to read "Beer, Bourbon and Burgers" before you go to your next guys night out! I am blessed to be married to an incredible man, who has fathered our four sweet kids. He is patient, compassionate, and is the kind of dad I always dreamed about for my children. Since Father's Day is quickly approaching, I want to say thank you, Happy Birthday and Happy Father's Day to Cedric Smith, my best friend. And Happy Father's Day to all the great dads out there! Since this issue is all about the guys, I asked one of our male writers to put together a Father's Day Gift Guide in lieu of my "in the bag" products. He picked some awesome gifts! Check it out! Until next month, I'll see you at Tolleson Park pool or splurging on icees at RaceTrac.

Summertime isn’t complete without a juicy,

Looking for a classic burger? Try the Front Porch. Want to get a little wild? Both the Lockhart Legend, with Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, housemade Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, and onion rings, and the Texas Luau, with braised pulled pork, grilled pineapple, jalapenos, and a teriyaki BBQ sauce, are alternative favorites. Don’t miss their handcrafted milkshakes...without or without the added "adult" kick. Meehan’s Public House is another popular burger restaurant in Vinings with an Irish flair. Menu items highlight local ingredients and combine classic flavors. THE MAN BEHIND THE CONGRESSMAN MEET CONGRESSMAN DAVID SCOTT Congressman Scott's office in Smyrna.

Vinings Lifestyle | June 2016
C
ongressman David Scott is our congressman. He has served a diverse region, which includes Smyrna and Vinings as well as parts of Fayette, Clayton, Henry, Fulton, and Douglas counties, for the last 13 years. He has a strong presence, a firm handshake, and a charming smile that quietly commands attention. He is an old school politician who would rather give out a printed document than send out an email. He is passionate and compassionate and has spent nearly all his life working for the benefit of the people of Georgia. Congressman David Scott was born on a South Carolina farm in 1945. He spent the formative years of his life soaking up the knowledge of the ages by living with both of his sets of grandparents while his mother and father earned a living as domestic help in the North. It wasn't until he was 11 years old that he first lived with his parents, in the home of a wealthy Scarsdale, New York businessman, who employed his parents. It was then he became the only African American student in Scarsdale schools. In fact, he was the only African American child in the entire city! After winning the hearts of his classmates and neighbors in Scarsdale, Congressman Scott moved to Daytona Beach, Fl with his parents where he graduated high school. He later earned a degree in finance from Florida A&M University and a master's degree in business from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1969, he met and married the love of his
life, Alfredia Scott, sister to baseball legend, Hank Aaron. They have two children and two grandchildren. Having worked in one way or another since he was five years old, Congressman Scott has always been a shrewd manager of resources. He founded an advertising firm focused on outdoor billboards in Atlanta, and soon thereafter took the leap into politics. Scott served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1974 to 1982 and then in the Georgia State Senate from 1982 to 2002, prior to running for US Congress. Congressman Scott is quick to give God glory, as he was taught by his parents and grandparents. He looks back on his early years with fondness, despite the inequities of the Jim Crow South and the more subtle racism in the North. He has chosen to honor his past and uses it to speak from experience on everything from lobbying for farmer's rights before the EPA to fighting for a bill targeting jobs for young African American men. He even led the fight for the Moment of Silence Act, which granted time for reflection or prayer at the start of each school day in the nation's public schools. Congressman Scott is a man who is quick to laugh and is generous with his time. When he's not in session in Washington DC, he shares time between a Jonesboro office and one off Concord Rd. in Smyrna. His steady presence has been an asset to the community and his life story is nothing short of mesmerizing. Congressman Scott truly is a hometown hero.

Mari Smith, PT, DPT Advanced training in Neurological and Vestibular Disorders
Move Well Live Well
Stay Well
In today's society, there are many options for patients when it comes to physical therapy. As a matter fact, there are several large companies that have a PT clinic on just about every corner. With this kind of competition, it may seem unlikely that a privately-owned physical therapy clinic could compete, however, the One on One model is very different from these other large physical therapy practices. It is precisely these differences that have created our reputation as a center for excellence within the Atlanta community.
Jessica Reale, PT, DPT, WCS Board Certiied Specialist in Women's Health and Pelvic Floor Disorders
Alexis Lowery, PT, DPT Advanced training in treating the Spine and Orthopedic Dysfunction
Seth R. Oberst, DPT, SCS, CSCS Board Certiied Sapecialist in Sports Rehabilitation, Advanced training in treating Chronic Pain
Tony Fox, PT, DPT Advanced training in treating Orthopedic Dysfunction with special interest in Martial Arts Rehabilitation and Conditioning
The rst, and biggest, difference is all in our name. Each and every patient is seen directly by their physical therapist for their entire session which lasts 50 – 60 minutes, consisting of manual techniques, neuromuscular re-education and therapeutic exercise that must have the skilled intervention of a therapist to be successful. Additionally, each therapist has a private treatment room, so each patient can feel comfortable in a private environment. With this dedication to patient care, we see that our patients get better faster and stay better longer. At One on One, we believe this is the only way to deliver physical therapy! In addition to our therapists dedicating their time to patients, we pride ourselves on hiring physical therapists that have taken their education above and beyond the norm. While we are all versatile in the types of patients we treat, each of us has our "specialty niche” that we like to focus on. Dr. Mari Smith has 14 years of physical therapy experience with a focus in neurology, treating various neurological disorders in adults. She uses specialized treatments for vestibular disorders including vertigo, post-concussion syndrome, and balance problems. Dr. Jessica Reale, PT, DPT, WCS is a board-certi ed specialist in Women’s Health and has advanced training in treating pelvic oor disorders diso in men, women, and children. Pelvic oor physical therapy includes the management of bowel, bladder and sexual dysfunction as well as pelvic pain disorders. Dr. Alexis Lowery, DPT has a special interest in treating the spine and has pursued advanced training in manual osteopathic techniques with a focus on spinal and pelvic girdle dysfunctions. Dr. Seth Oberst, DPT, SCS, CSCS is a board-certi ed specialist and strength and conditioning coach with a passion for helping all individuals achieve optimal health. Dr. Oberst has a holistic, progressive approach to human movement patterns and their impact on sport and function. Dr. Tony Fox, PT, DPT has a special interest in utilizing manual therapy techniques to reduce pain and improve function. With a long history of martial arts practice, Dr. Fox enjoys treating marital artists, in addition to, the general orthopedic population. Another important difference in our clinic is that we have invested heavily in specialized equipment to help attain the highest level of rehabilitation. One on One Physical Therapy in Vinings\Smyrna is home to the Alter-G antigravity treadmill. The Alter-G uses patented NASA technology to allow for precise unloading of joints while maintaining proper form. Training on the Alter-G is helpful when recovering from an injury or when wanting to progress tness to the next level without injury. Our clinic also offers Redcord which is a sling and bungee system that allows for precise unloading to facilitate optimal movement patterns. Additionally, we also use Pilates to enhance enhan treatment. The principles of Pilates focus on core control, spinal mobility, alignment, and breathing. At One on One, we believe that your rehab should bridge into a wellness program to ensure that your results stick with you! Our clinic offers Pilates, yoga, and massage as options to this path of wellness. With our dedication to patient care and wellness, we hope that you will seek out your physical therapy needs with us! With over 5500 sq feet, and 8 private treatment rooms, come experience the individual and personalized treatment that is proven to get quicker and lasting results. We believe that this model should be the standard of care for physical therapy, and we think you'll agree!

TESLA MODEL 3

MUSK’S STATE OF THE ART, AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CAR IS FINALLY HERE
ARTICLE DONALD HAWKINS
I
n 2006, Elon Musk published a blog post outlining his long-term vision for Tesla. At the time, Tesla was still two years away from deliv-
ering the first Roadster, the company’s first product.
“The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium,” Musk said. “Then, we’ll drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model.” The base-level Tesla Model 3 will come standard with a rearmounted single motor capable of launching the car from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in about six seconds. A high-performance dual-motor AWD configuration will also be offered, though Tesla has offered little in the way of performance stats for the car. Journalists who were offered the opportunity to ride in the car reported a high-performance feel that would be familiar to anyone who has been in a Tesla. Tesla announced the driving range in the Model 3 to be “at least 215 miles.” Achieving a 215-mile range will require a pack, most likely, of about 50 kilowatt-hours. Some analysts believe that Tesla is already 32

approaching a cost of $200 per kWh, which would put the Model 3’s pack at around $10,000. Tesla’s long-term goal is to use mass production at its Nevada-based factory to bring the cost well below this level. A 240-volt Tesla home charging station costs $750, not including installation. We expect the Model 3 to use an on-board 10 kW charger, like its sibling vehicles. This means owners can add 30 or more

chances are you’ll be in for a much longer wait if you didn’t put down a $1,000 refundable deposit in the first hour after Tesla began accepting pre-orders. In just two weeks, Tesla registered more than 300,000 pre-orders—a level of interest that is truly unprecedented for a car that nobody has driven yet and barely seen. Elon Musk’s stated goal is 500,000 deliveries by 2020, though many analysts doubt this projection in light of how long it has taken for Tesla to reach peak production capacity in the past—as well as the company’s dependency on reaching full production at its battery factory.

ummer is here and that means golf season is in full swing both in Atlanta and
across the world. For golf enthusiasts look-
ing for a little extra in their summer vacation, check out these four unique destinations. For those who live by the motto "a bad day on the golf course, is better than a good day anywhere else", these over-the-top golfing vacations are sure to impress. DESTINATION: ROCKY MOUNTAINS
When most people think of the Rocky Mountains, images of world-class skiing come to mind. However, Vail and Beaver Creek are also home to top-ranked golf courses. Red Sky Ranch & Golf Club features two courses – one designed by Tom Fazio and the other by Greg Norman. The courses are naturally divided by a ridge which is also a migration area for deer and elk. Excellent lodging options abound in Vail Village such as Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch, which gives you access to Beaver Creek Golf Club. Near the southern edge of the Rockies is The Broadmoor, a golf club steeped in tradition and a premier resort complete with adventure activities, wilderness experiences, varied culinary options and whole-body wellness. Further north, in the heart of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, is the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course. Renowned for its challenging layout and panoramic vistas (which might include a bear or moose sighting), this course keeps golfers on his or her toes. Off-course activities include helicopter tours, rafting trips, mountain biking, hiking, and fishing. 34

The spicy beef sausages pack a nice heat and don’t have the over-processed taste larger brand sausages can have. Spotted Trotter can be found at retailers and farmers markets around town. These sausages are best enjoyed with friends, preferably on a patio with frosty drinks to wash them down. Enjoy!

heat and cook the sausages until browned on one side, about 2 minutes. Flip over and repeat on the other side. Remove from skillet and slice down the middle of the sausages and season with cayenne, salt and pepper. Return to skillet and cook until cooked through, about 5 more minutes. • In a sauce pan over medium heat, melt the butter and whisk in the flour cooking for about 2 minutes. Stir in the milk and beer, whisking until smooth. Increase the heat to medium high and simmer. Add the ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce, constantly stirring as the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. • Stir in the cheddar cheese, making sure it completely melts. Adjust seasoning as needed. • Place each sausage on a bun and spoon a decent amount of cheese on top. Top with toppings of choice – and enjoy!

MEET RISING STAR:
Jawan Nobles
ARTICLE NADIYAH JETT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
H
oning both academic and athletic prowess is not an easy feat, but one Campbell High School senior is making these two worlds come together quite successfully. 18-year-old Jawan Nobles balances Advanced Placement courses in literature and biology, alongside Honors classes for government and economics, with track practices and meets in the spring and basketball practice in the fall and winter. While this can be difficult, Jawan understands this tough schedule will prepare him for college. . Jawan is an academic and athletic leader, which has paid off with a full athletic scholarship to play Division I football at Georgia State University as a wide receiver. Jawan is 6 feet 3 inches and 180 poinds of blazing speed. With his excellent size, he was utilized as a quarterback for the Wildcats during his senior year. Experts praised his good vision in the open field and his ability to accelerate quickly. However, his football skills are not his only athletic prowess. Jawan is also a star on the Campbell High School track team. He runs the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, as well as several relays. He recently won 1st place in the 200 meters and 400 meters at the GHSA sectional meet. He has run a 4.38 40 yard dash and has been recorded as fast as 10.7 seconds in the 100 meter dash! “I have been playing sports since I can remember, from baseball to football, you name it,” Jawan says. “Being an NCAA recruit was extremely fun. I am glad that it was something that I was able to go through. The next steps are to report at the beginning of June to workout, move onto campus and get familiar with the logistics of the football program.” Jawan, who enjoys going fishing when he isn’t studying or training, is already planning for his upcoming college days and even the subsequent future. “My biggest goal is to own my own business. I talked to people when I was trying to figure out my major, and they said that if I want to own a business, I will have to be able to market it. So, I’ve decided to major in marketing. And, I’m really into shoes. Advertisements from different athletic companies that I see catch my attention. For the longest time I have wanted to be the marketing manager for a brand like Adidas or Nike,” says Jawan, who has made a hobby out of collecting, restoring and customizing various types of shoes. If this mature teen’s future success can be projected according to his current performance on and off the field, it’s an easy call that he will reach his dreams and have many more achievements along the way. 42
