Goodbye Summer!
S
ummer is too short. Going back to school at the beginning of August seems a bit cruel, but that's the price we pay for being able to hit the pools before Memorial Day. Now that school is in session (or soon will be) for most kids, it's time we all get back to our regularly scheduled programming. However, just because the kids are back in school, that doesn't mean summer is over. August can be a great time to hit the beach for a weekend. Smaller crowds and more affordable prices can make it very enticing. Read the story "Summer Isn't Over Yet" for some fantastic beach options in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Also check out the A+ back to school finds in "School Bus Approved". Maria at the United State And read how Smyrna is on the vanguard of dual language eduof Women Summit in cation in the appropriately-named article, "Si!". Washington DC. I recently spent a whirlwind two days in Washington DC to attend the United State of Women Summit where education was widely discussed. Speakers included the President, First Lady, Vice President, and tons of celebrities including Oprah Winfrey! It was fascinating to be around so many women doing impressive things in our country and around the world. I was honored to just be in the room with them. It was an outstanding addition to my summer vacation! Even though I miss the looseness of summer, there is some comfort to getting the kids (and myself) back on a routine. I hope you find your own comfort this month too. Until next month, I'll see you cheering on the players at the BB&T Atlanta Open and cooling off with the Peach Cobbler Blast milkshake at Lolli Bop Sweet Shop!

The elegant Saturday all-day event features polo matches, gourmet dining, crafted Southern cocktails, a silent auction and dancing. The scene will be set by Sean O’Keefe Events, a generous supporter of Polo in the Pines since its inception. New to Polo in the Pines is the Best Bloodies and Brunch Bites, Sunday’s festival featuring more world-class polo and a buffet from Atlanta’s best chefs and bartenders. Polo in the Pines planning co-chairs, Tina Fowler and Jennifer Bonner already have Host Teams lined up including Sharon and Collins Knight, Nikki and Joey Butler, Karol and Joe Butler, Margaret Ann and Kevin Kennedy, Liz and Terry Ryan, Angie and Steve Fowler, Jill and Dan 14

ast year, nine-year-old Dylan Erwin could hardly speak, much less read. Today, after a year in the classroom of Kelly O’Connell he reads at grade level and speaks in short sentences. He was also chosen as a Student of the Month last school year at Nickajack Elementary School. “To Kelly it didn’t matter that he couldn’t speak clearly, that he didn’t say one word until he was five. Other teachers would just put him in the back row and ignore him,” says his mother, Miranda. “Kelly was the first teacher that wanted to know what he knew. She gave a damn and used computers to reach him. She thinks outside the box.” Dylan’s battles may ring true with parents of non-typical children who are hard to define, much less help. Miranda says, “he’s had bad teachers. He’s had good teachers. He’s had several diagnoses...We’d do the IEP at school and no one was reading it, much less following it,” she says. “We needed help from the school and private help. I understand the limitations of the schools. There’s too many kids needing help.” O’Connell, who was at Kemp Elementary School in Powder Springs prior to Nickajack, was quickly inundated with special needs 16

them and repeat it over and over. He wouldn’t complete his work and would just grunt or do whatever he wanted.” However, once she started using the iPad and different computer programs, his intellect exploded. "If you watch these kids you can see they have a lot inside them,” says O'Donnell. “You just have to pull it out. Dylan, would do amazing things. It was obvious he was a problem solver, which made him good at math. He wasn’t intellectually disabled.” Dylan, who does not take medication, now reads at grade level and loves Winnie the Pooh. Next year he will be in a third-grade inclusion class which includes both typical and non-typical children. He now loves doing homework, reading and doing math problems with his brother Jacob. Kelly is quick to say not all kids will have a breakthrough like Dylan. “There is a limit to what some of these kids can do. It’s a path. They learn differently and you have to find ways to reach them.” For Miranda, she credits Kelly as well as his support system including his pediatrician, an applied behavior analysis therapist, speech therapist as well as her son Jacob and her husband Doug, a CPA. Miranda says parents in similar situations should work, not fight, with the teachers. “Quit fighting the system and hiring lawyers. Visit the teachers. Know your options,” she says. As for Dylan, he already knows his future path. He wants to be a teacher.

So Your Child's Going to Kindergarten Advice to the parents of the class of 2029 Photo: Aubry Canales
ARTICLE MARIA SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Wyatt, 2015
T
he class of 2029 will start kindergarten this Fall. Their parents, especially those sending their oldest or only child to school, may be filled with a juxtaposition of emotions. They may be elated at the new life development or grieving it with their whole heart. Or both! To help all kindergarten parents survive this transition, Vinings Lifestyle Magazine asked area parents who have been there for some advice. Here's what they had to say:
20
Vinings Lifestyle | August 2016
Heather Atchley Hodge: "Share your excitement about kinder-
garten and starting "big kid school", while also keeping in mind that your child is still very young. They need down time, love, hugs, and reminders for behavior and ways to treat others. Allow them to make mistakes and let them know that tomorrow is always another day to do your best."
Diane Overton: "Kindergarten is exhausting! Your student may
be super-tired and/or have behavior troubles at home, especially during those first few weeks, and especially if he/she hasn't been to all-day school before. Downtime after school might help. And a big dose of patience definitely comes in handy."
Morgan, 2011
Sarah Lyons: "Tip one: If your child will ever
ride the bus, start from day one. There are many safety procedures in place and the kids will learn the ropes and routines with a LOT of supervision. If you are worried about missing those first day pictures, put your child on the bus and then drive to the school and meet them at their classroom door and snap away. Tip 2: Take all of your supplies and your checkbook to "sneak a peak". It saves a lot of hassle that first day. Plus you can join the PTA and put money on your child's lunch account. Tip 3: Pack lunches the night before. Even better, have your child pack their lunch the night before (with supervision of course). In the morning all you have to do is slip in an ice pack and zip them up."
Bryce & big sister Nina-Rose, 2014
Sarah, 2013
Stephanie Campanella: "Listen to your
child. The "little things" are big to them! Everyday ask "What was the best part of your day?" and "What was the worst part of your day?" Don't get caught up in the parent gossip, gossip has a tendency to be false or greatly exaggerated." Victoria Jean. "Be the person you want your
kids to be. They will do and say what the people around them do and say. Do what I say and not what I do does not work well. Verbalize the importance of academic excellence often and lay the foundation of high expectation. Praise effort as practice does lead to success. Remember "FAIL" equals first attempt in learning." Dual language programs take root in Smyrna
Smyrna Elementary school was the first public school in the area to have a dual language immersion program.

ARTICLE LAURA MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

he world is quickly changing – there is no doubt about that. It is now vital to stay ahead of the curve with both business and cultural practices. With that process, however, comes a need to adapt, which can include adjusting the way classes are taught in local schools. Georgia’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program Initiative has plans to do just that. With ten schools, Cobb County has the largest number of schools participating in this program. The program started last year at Smyrna Elementary and in 2016-2017, Smyrna schools Nickajack Elementary, Norton Park Elementary and Russell Elementary will also be participating. Private schools are also offering more intense language programs. For example, Atlanta Trilingual Academy in Smyrna offers a full language immersion program and St. Benedict's Episcopal School teaches all students Spanish daily.
22
Vinings Lifestyle | August 2016
Students involved in a dual-language class typically spend half of their school day taking classes in the chosen immersion language while the remaining half of classes are taught in English. Target language classes include math, science, literacy, and social studies, while English language arts, reading, and specials are taught in English. WHAT IS DUAL IMMERSION?
Quite simply, it’s when students learn content through both their native language and the target language. The target language is decided by the community, who also votes to bring the specific programs to the schools. Whether it be French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Chinese, children are taught by qualified, often native speaking, teachers, and are still required to meet the same standards and expectations of other kids in their grade. Diane Kordel is a teacher and elementary school parent who was instrumental in bringing dual language immersion programs to Nickajack Elementary. She will be the lead Spanish teacher in the school's dual language immersion class. When asked what led her to be part of the program, Ms. Kordel was excited to share her reasons, backed by extensive research. “As the only Spanish speaking teacher at Nickajack Elementary, I was very fortunate to have this opportunity presented to me by our previous principal, Beverly Lloyd," Ms. Kordel said. "After attending a couple of trainings with Mrs. Lloyd and my co-teacher Jensen Morris, as well as observing the Kindergarten Dual Language Immersion teachers at Smyrna Elementary and speaking to Dr.
Diane Kordel is excited to make the move to a dual language immersion classroom.
Barfield, the World Languages and Dual Language Immersion Program Specialist, I knew that this would be a fantastic opportunity for me professionally. I also knew it would be a great advantage for our students at Nickajack.” WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION?
Dual immersion is a trend that is quickly sweeping the nation, and the benefits are endless. According to gadoe.org, students in the dual language programs usually have higher proficiency in the second language than with traditional foreign language instruction. Other benefits include a longer attention span and better memory and problem solving skills. They typically score higher on standardized tests, and have higher attendance rates and lower drop-out rates. Above all, these students are better prepared for 21st century job markets and global citizenship than others. “As a parent, I think this is a wonderful opportunity for children, especially at a young age to be exposed to multiple languages and have the ability to read, write and speak in another language,” Kordel said. “As a teacher, I believe this is a huge advantage for our students! This is not only going to allow students to be bilingual but help them in their future when competing for jobs globally and providing our students the ability to use the Spanish language in real-world situations.” Learning is always a good thing – and with our ever-changing world, an ever-changing way of education is both necessary and beneficial.
Many Smyrna kindergarteners have a new option: dual language immersion classes.

Is an Au Pair Right for You? ARTICLE MARIA SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
P
arents with young children know that finding high quality, flexible, affordable childcare options is a challenge. Some parents just need someone to drive pre-teens to school and practice. Others need full-time care for babies while parents work outside the home full time. Some parents just need another set of hands in the home to help care for a houseful of small kids. All these families may be excellent candidates for an au pair.
WHAT IS AN AU PAIR?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO HOSTING AN AU PAIR?
An au pair is a domestic assistant from a foreign country who comes to work for and live with a host family in the United States. Typically, au pairs assist with childcare as well as some housework. They live in the home with the family and are only eligible to stay with the family for a predetermined amount of time (usually up to two years). Most au pairs are female and they are typically in their late teens or early twenties.
Since au pairs live in the home, they are able to provide flexible childcare. Many families appreciate the idea that there is no need to worry about fees for late pickups at daycare or scramble to find alternative care if a child is sick or plans change. Families with more than one child may even save money as the cost families pay the agency is not based on the number of children they have. Hosting an au pair is probably more affordable than many people think. Plus, families get to experience the cultural education of living with someone from another country.
WHAT MAKES AN AU PAIR DIFFERENT FROM A NANNY OR A BABYSITTER?
ARE THERE AU PAIRS IN SMYRNA?
Families who host an au pair are not just gaining a child care provider, but also another family member. Many families say that their au pairs truly become big sisters and big brothers to their kids. As one of the host fathers working with Au Pair USA said, “the cultural experience has been an incredible gift to our family. And, we have what can only be described as a wonderful human being as an au pair that loves and cares for our children as we do. What a blessing!”
Yes! Au Pair USA has a local Coordinator, Cara Harper, a Smyrna mom, who has been working with host families in the greater Atlanta area for over 6 years. She loves to connect with families and inform them about the benefits of using an au pair. She has placed au pairs in several families throughout the area. Chances are most Vinings Lifestyle readers have a neighbor who is currently hosting an au pair. Want to know more? Cara can be reached at charper@ lc.interexchange.org or visit Interexchange.org/Au-Pair-USA .

Grooming Got You Down? Guys of all ages can look put together with these expert tips

every day...style matters.Though the August sun is blazing as hot as ever, that doesn't have to mean fashion has to go out of the window. It may be time to try a new hair cut or perhaps let go of the facial hair. It might even be time to get on board with manscaping too. To help guys in Smyrna and Vinings look their best, men’s style expert and male image consultant Aaron Marino advises them to keep disciplined grooming habits even if wardrobe choices become more laid back. For more tips on the art of grooming, Marino dishes on how to do this with ease. Aaron Marino is a men’s style expert and male image consultant.

DITCH THE BACK HAIR
Back hair is a deal breaker. If men are going to be shirtless, that is one thing they need to make sure is in check. Another trend is that men don’t necessarily need to take all their chest hair away. Though it is a good idea to perhaps just trim the bulk of it down. To remove back hair, check out an ingenious new product called the Bakblade ($34.95, BakBlade. com) that lets men shave their own backs. It can even be used dry. LET GO OF THE BEARD
Last winter, the whole lumbersexual thing was
going on. Now, a lot of guys are trimming their beards back to a shorter and more manageable length. While men are trimming things down, they should also focus on their nose hair and eyebrows as well. By the way, eyebrows are plural for a reason. There should be two. GET A PEDICURE
Guys need to check their toenails. Summer isn't over yet, so men need to make sure they don’t have possum feet before pulling out their everyday flip flops. Just go get a pedicure. Yes, men do that. OPT FOR BEACH HAIR
Guys should be a little less polished and primped with their hairstyles this summer. This look goes well with being out and about in the summer sun. Stop worrying about structured hair and think more about having fun in the surf and sand...even in landlocked Smyrna. DON'T FORGET A SKINCARE ROUTINE
From teens to millenials to men of a certain age, more guys are starting to focus on taking care of their skin. In the beginning, start with a simple moisturizing lotion with a high enough SPF (30 SPF or more). Skin cancer is real and getting a sunburn is definitely not sexy on anyone. Aside from sun protection, men should also be exfoliating any part that they manscape. Exfoliate after shaving and during every shower. The goal is to make sure hairs are able to break through close to the surface of the skin. If not, red itchy bumps are going to be the result. Men need to identify what well-groomed means to them because that term can mean different things to different people. Then, create a routine and stick to

ORANGE BEACH/GULF SHORES, ALABAMA Many may not think of Alabama as a first choice for beach fun, but it is a quick, easy drive from Atlanta and the beaches are some of the most family friendly around. For a plethora of shopping, food, and entertainment options, take a shuttle to the Baytowne Wharf. The area starts to quiet down in August which makes it more affordable for a quick late summer/early fall getaway. Want to skip the 5-6 hour drive? Check out Southern Airways which offers affordable, direct private-like flights out of Atlanta's Peachtree-Dekalb airport. WHERE TO STAY: The posh seaside area, Hilton Sandestin

Be sure to make time for the Lighthouse trolley tour. (Try the ghost one at night...if you dare.) WHERE TO STAY: Check out the King and Prince, a member of

CHARLESTON, SC Charleston’s beaches are just part of the distinct character of this historic community. There is a slow pace here that lends itself to immediate stress reduction. Be sure to get a healthy dose of Lowcountry cooking, including the region's famous dish: shrimp and grits. o help ease back into the school year, try this simple, but oh-so-delicious granola bar recipe. These bars only call
for five main ingredients and are nutrient-packed with oats and peanut butter. But don’t worry, the honey and chocolate chips make sure they are fun, too. These come together in a matter of minutes, and don’t even need to be baked! The star of this recipe is the peanut butter, made by local company Georgia Grinders Premium Nut Butters. Launched in 2012 by Jamie and Harry Foster, Georgia Grinders strives to make the most delicious and nutritious nut butters available on the market. They don’t use GMO’s, and they produce their nut butters in a facility they own and operate. They make

peanut, almond and cashew butters, and carefully source their ingredients. This recipe uses one of their latest flavors, the “cinnamon-vanilla-peanut-pecan.” A mouthful, but a creamy, slightly sweet yet still natural tasting one. It even uses Georgia grown peanuts and pecans! You can find Georgia Grinders at various farmers markets around town and grocers like Sprouts, The Fresh Market and Kroger. Or, you can order it online at GeorgiaGrinders.com. These bars will keep in the fridge for about a week, and even longer in the freezer. Simply wrap the bars individually in plastic wrap, for the perfect kid (or adult) on-the-go breakfast treat or snack. INGREDIENTS:
1 ¾ cups quick cooking oats 1 1/3 cups toasted pecan pieces 2/3 cup dark chocolate chips 1 tsp pumpkin spice or cinnamon (optional) pinch of salt 1 cup Cinnamon-Vanilla-Pecan-Peanut Butter, slightly warmed up (a different peanut butter will be fine) ½ cup honey 1 tsp vanilla extract INSTRUCTIONS:
Line an 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine the oats, pecan pieces, chocolate chips, spices and salt. In a small bowl, combine the peanut butter, honey and vanilla extract. Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients, and combine with a wooden spoon. Stir well, ensuring that all of the oats have been incorporated. Spread the mixture out in the prepared baking dish and pat down. Make sure everything is snug so it all stays together. Put a piece of parchment paper under a glass for extra help patting the mixture down. Cover and chill for at least an hour, but ideally overnight. Then, slice and serve. Enjoy! 32
