Editor’s Letter
Salut! I Maria Smith with Lisa Wilkinson, wife of David Wilkinson
’m thrilled to bring you this special "spirited" edition of Vinings Lifestyle magazine. Inside you will learn why everyone seems to be talking about craft beer and where to get it in Smyrna and Vinings. You are also treated to cocktail recipes from some of our favorite bars in the area to spice up your next dinner party. Read on to learn how a local Smyrna home builder was featured on a FOX TV reality show, as well as get to know your friendly evening sports anchor, David Wilkinson and his darling family, a little better. We also explain the new trend in agri-tourism and the pull to let loose in New Orleans.
I'm excited to be the editor for Vinings Lifestyle and to be able to bring you these great stories. I have lived in the Vinings area with my family for 6 years and I love it. With four kids and a husband, I love the area’s family-friendliness as well as its proximity to just about anything else in the metro Atlanta area. From friendly neighbors to happening events to excellent schools and parks…our neighborhood is pretty sweet! In future editions, we plan to bring you information, entertainment and the excitement that comes from living in the Vinings and Smyrna communities. See something we should include? Shoot an email to me (maria.smith@lifestylepubs.com) or just tap me on the shoulder when you spot me at Taylor-Brawner Park, Vinings Chick-fil-A, or Sunday mornings at Mount Paran. I look forward to exploring even more of our own amazing community right along with you.

Around Town CHICK-FIL-A REMODEL The Chick-fil-A at Macland Crossing in Marietta reopened in August after having been closed for several months for renovations. The whole restaurant got a facelift and is cleaner, sleeker, and allows for a better flow of traffic. There's also some unique additions including a chandelier made from old Coca-Cola bottles and another one made from a peach basket. They added a huge family-style community table in the center of the restaurant that's made from repurposed wood. The play area was updated with new flooring and seating, too. Krystyn Hall, mother of four and blogger at ReallyAreYouSerious.com, thinks the renovation looks sharp. "The store looks amazing and is so modern and fresh and bright," says Hall. "There is a lot more seating and it feels much bigger." Chick-fil-A at Macland Crossing is located at 2005 Macland Crossing Cir SW, Marietta, GA 30008. Trick-or-treat: Traditional trick-or-treating within area neighborhoods typically happens on October 31, with each area having it's own rules, regulations and traditions. With that day falling on a Saturday this year, no matter where you go there are sure to be lots of ghosts, goblins, and mini Atlanta Falcons out so be sure to stock up on candy. Trunk-or-treat: In addition to trick-or-treating in the neighborhoods, many churches offer "trunk-or-treat" events designed to give kids the fun of getting candy without the pain of walking miles to do so. These events are usually viewed as a tamer and safer way to give kids a Halloween experience without the scary parts. In the past, Vinings United Methodist Church, Cumberland Community Church and St. Benedict's Episcopal Church all held trunk-or-treat events. Information for 2015 was not available at press time. Harvest Square Arts and Crafts Festival: For those looking to get away from having their kids beg for candy, check out the Harvest Square Arts and Crafts Festival on the Marietta Square on October 17-18. It will feature many local artists and craftspeople as well as family-friendly activities. The Halloween Happenings area will include games, candy, prizes, and a costume contest for children 12 and under as well as for pets. Marietta.com/harvest-square. Festival on the Mount: Come to Mount Paran Church on Saturday, October 31, for one of the biggest free, family-friendly events in Atlanta on Halloween. Billed as a "Fall festival" as opposed to a Halloween party, the celebration boasts rides, bouncy houses, a preschool area, carnival games, costume contests and lots of candy. Festival on the Mount is a great compromise event for families who don't want to participate in typical Halloween activities, but they still want to give their children a fun night. MountParan.com
SMYRNA CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY IN A BIG WAY The city of Smyrna celebrated its 143rd birthday with a huge community-wide celebration on August 1st (though it doesn't look a day over 120). The birthday celebration coincided with the last weekend before many Cobb County children headed back to school, so there was extra excitement in the air. Thousands of residents and neighbors gathered in Smyrna's Village Green to celebrate the big event with family fun in a kids entertainment area, energetic musical performances and fireworks. Since it was a birthday party, there had to be cake! McEntyre's Bakery didn't disappoint. They created a giant birthday cake and baked two thousand cupcakes for the mega-celebration. Happy birthday, Smyrna!
HALLOWEEN EVENTS IN SMYRNA, VININGS AND BEYOND Get your costumes ready! It's the time of year again when girls turn into Cinderella, babies turn into pumpkins, and it seems as though there should be no crime in the world with the amount of little super heroes running around. It's Halloween time! 10

ights, camera, action! David Wilkinson is no stranger to being the center of attention. For most of his adult life he has been in the public eye as a sports reporter in markets from Montgomery, Alabama, to Waco, Texas. After years of carpetbagging, David and his wife Lisa, a stay-at-home mom, are thrilled to be back in David's hometown. They have made Smyrna their home for the past year after David was offered his dream job as a sports anchor and reporter with NBC affiliate WXIA-TV. David and Lisa have been married nine years and are parents to the precocious Ella Grace (3), and their newest addition, 3-monthold Hannah Marie. The Wilkinsons love the family-friendliness of Smyrna and the convenience of living close to just about everything. They

belong to the Cumberland Community Church family and Lisa is an active member of the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group there. Taylor-Brawner Park, with its many events and great playground, is a huge draw for the young family. David, the funny man in the family, is originally from Sandy Springs, and is thrilled to live close enough to easily take his family to sporting events. While he believes strongly in being a reporter and not a "supporter," he admits there is something special about offering his children the same experiences he had as a kid. family, they mutually came to the conclusion to adopt. Less than a year after starting the process, they were holding their new daughter in their arms! Big sister Ella Grace agrees it was a brilliant move and is elated to have a new addition in the family. After working in three states across the country, the Wilkinsons have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to put down some roots in the Atlanta metro area. As a reporter, David had barely dared to dream about the possibility of working in his hometown. But when the opportunity presented itself, he was ecstatic. "It's a dream come true to cover teams I grew up watching," David proudly explains. "I couldn't think of a better place to be." You can watch David Wilkinson most days on WXIA-TV, during the 11Alive evening and weekend broadcasts. 11alive.com

OUT THE BARREL What is craft beer & why you should drink it.

C
raft beer is all around us. These unique bottles of varying colors of brown ale can be found in high end restaurants and casual pubs in Vinings. They are in liquor stores and grocery stores throughout Smyrna. You can even find a pretty good assortment of craft beer in the walk-in cooler at RaceTrac! However, it was not always this way. In 1980, according to the Brewers’ Association there were only eight craft brewers in the United States. Today, there are over 3,400 craft brewers. Nearly all of them are small, independent brewers. While these businesses may be small, the earnings they make are definitely not. The craft beer market brought in $19.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2014, a 22 percent jump from the preceding year. Georgia has a steadily growing number of craft beer breweries. The Brewers Association lists 40 craft breweries currently operating in Georgia. They are producing 280,000+ barrels of craft beer each year. That’s 1.2 gallons of beer for every adult in Georgia 21 years old or older. While that may seem impressive, California has the most craft brewers-- 431--and an economic impact on the state to the tune of $6.8 billion dollars! In Georgia, the craft brew industry is $1.1 billion. WHAT IS CRAFT BEER?
While hipsters might think the only thing that defines a craft beer is its catchy name and label, there are actually specific conditions for beer to be considered "craft." According to the Brewers Association, they must be small, independent and traditional: Small: To be considered a craft beer, the brewery must have an annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less. Independent: More than 25 percent of a craft brewery cannot be owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not a craft brewer. Traditional: The brewer must derive the flavor of the majority of its beers from traditional or innovative fermentation processes or brewing ingredients. WHY DRINK CRAFT BEER?
Thanks to the ingenuity, creativity and originality of the 3,000+ craft brewers in the U.S., Americans now have more of a choice than ever when it comes to enjoying a cold one. There are more brands and beer styles to choose from, giving everyone the opportunity to find just the right taste for them. Robert Smith of Smyrna likes the idea that each craft beer is unique and different. "There are so many varieties to try and it is exciting that these beers are made in small batches from independent brewers," says Smith. "I like that these brewers take risks." While so much of our lives are manufactured on a grand scale, craft beers are more individualized. They can represent the location of the brewer, an ethnic identity, the season of the year or simply an eclectic flavor combination that will delight the palate. Craft beers have a complexity of ingredients and are treasured for being a versatile beverage that can easily be paired with great food as well as used as a cooking ingredient. 22

Experience Southern Style Luxuries with Georgia's Agritourism No hop across the pond required! ARTICLE LORI MCMILLEN BROWN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he secret is really no secret. There is an idyllic region boasting European health spas, fifth-generation farms, and rolling vineyards. You’ve seen it, heard it, passed by it, most likely even bought some of its homegrown products. The region is more specifically a state, both literally and figuratively. Its name is Georgia.
AGRI-WHAT?
Mention the word agritourism and you might be met with blank stares, yawns or blinder-fueled visions of cows and chickens. Agritourism is a marriage of Georgia’s top two economic sectors: agriculture and tourism. As with most things in the infantile stage, its growth is rapid and its end-product personality is yet to be solidified. The blend includes more obvious elements such as pumpkin patches, u-pick berry farms, and yes, even cows and chickens. There is a lesser defined state of agritourism, one that is simmering under the surface. It’s ripe with possibilities, notoriety and an elevation of perception. Farm-to-table fueled celebrity restaurants, food and vineyard tours and world-class destination gardens can all be found as stand-alone or neatly integrated and packaged in resort destinations, spas and boutique shopping. To many, Georgia has become the state of luxury. WHERE TO VISIT
Barnsley Resort Exiting off I-75 North towards Adairsville leads you on a doubtful journey for the roughly remaining eight miles. And then you see the 19th century manor house ruins and luxury village cottages that form the beautiful and chic Barnsley Resort, part of the Southern Living Hotel Collection. Lanes lined by trees, not concrete curbs, are anchored by a common green area which features Adirondack chairs, fire pits and lawn games during most of the year. Dine at the Rice House, an 1800s-era farmhouse, which serves local elements such as UGA caviar, North Georgia trout, and Georgia pecan pie. The chefs source local farm-grazed cattle and provide some seasonal garden-to-table elements straight from the adjacent garden. Not everything agricultural comes from under the ground 24

though. At Barnsley’s on-site hunting preserve, SpringBank Plantation, hunting quail and pheasant is yet another mixture between Georgia’s agriculture and tourism industry. A golf course, named one of the Top Golf Resorts in the Southeast by Conde Nast Traveler, along with The Spa at Barnsley Resort help anchor the extensive amenities. And yes, they even have their own Fairy Godmother. Château Élan The most award-winning winery on the East Coast sits roughly an hour northeast of Atlanta off I-85. Entering through the gates of Château Élan is as close as you’ll come in Georgia to the feel of a manor-centric French countryside. In addition to inn and villa accommodations, the European-style spa includes 14 overnight guest suites. Taste of Georgia, a wine educational event available on select dates, pairs Château Élan wines with local cheeses, breads and samples from other local food artisans. At the wineries dining outlets you will find an infusion of local ingredients on the menu as well as a pletheora of the famous Château Élan wines.
The Japanese Gardens at Gibbs Gardens are 40 acres of exquisite serenity and beauty.
Barnsley Gardens Resort features open green spaces to enjoy the beauty of North Georgia.
Gibbs Gardens Located on 220 acres in North Georgia and home to the largest Japanese garden of its kind, Gibbs Gardens is one of the nation’s largest residential estate gardens. The Manor House Garden, Japanese Garden and Waterlily Garden comprise the 3 feature gardens among the 16 total gardens. Streams, springs, waterfalls, bridges and ponds play supporting roles across the property. A more laid back, mature version of area botanical gardens, Gibbs offers special twilight events for evening enjoyment where beer, wine and food are available for purchase. Adding a personal touch, Mr. Gibbs can be found many Saturdays greeting guests as they exit the Information Center into the gardens. Extending true southern hospitality, the back terrace of his Manor house is open for guests to take a rest in one of the iron rocking chairs and gaze across the gardens, as well as taking in a view of the mountain vistas. Making Life Beautiful ARTICLE MARIA R. SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY ALISON CHURCH
C
assandra Buckalew wears many hats, and she has been using all of them to make Vinings, Marietta and all around metro Atlanta more beautiful and fun for years. She is an interior designer, a philanthropist, an entrepreneur, and a business owner and uses all those titles to brighten the lives of people around her. With a fine arts degree in interior design from the prestigious Art Institute of Atlanta, Buckalew started her promising career working on both residential and commercial projects. She opened her own firm, Cassandra Buckalew Interiors, in 2005. Though she enjoyed significant success and accolades from her many projects, she was still looking for something more. Then in April of 2008, she decided to begin a new journey and opened The Historic Marietta Trolley Co on the Marietta Square to provide a fun sightseeing tour for the growing area. Two years later, she launched Marietta Pedicabs, an on-demand cycle cab service, helping tourists and locals alike get around a little easier. If that weren’t enough, she has also purchased the Ghosts of Marietta, a walking ghost tour. And in 2012, she launched her businesses inside the perimeter by starting The Peachtree Trolley Co to provide the City of Atlanta with her trademark Southern sightseeing tours. While satisfying her entrepreneurial spirit through the sightseeing businesses, Cassandra Buckalew has also dedicated hundreds of hours to helping to better our community in other ways as well. She serves on the Board of Directors at The Marietta Welcome Center and Visitors Bureau, United Arts of Cobb, and the Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta. She has co-chaired the Marietta Christmas Pilgrimage and Tour of Homes, The American Cancer Society’s Swordsman’s Ball, and The Art and Design Show House. Ms. Buckalew has received rave reviews for her recent design project, a complete transformation of the House of Lu restaurant in Marietta Square, a favorite of Food Network superstar Alton Brown. By commissioning original artwork and combining Chinese and Vietnamese objects, colors, and symbols, she managed to create a sleek, hip, fun restaurant that still pays homage to two distinct, proud cultures. This year-long labor of love project was even featured in CODAmagazine, the Collaboration of Design and Art publication, for their "Transformative Walls" issue earlier this year. Whether it is restoring properties, redesigning residences, or helping to show off our communities to tourists, Cassandra Buckalew has found a way to make our community better, and more beautiful, for us all. 26

hen Fox Network sought a custom home builder for it’s brand new home renovation competition show, Home Free, Edward Andrews Homes was the perfect fit. Based off Cumberland Parkway in Smyrna, Edward Andrews Homes was asked to do what they do best: create a dream house for a deserving family. For eight weeks during the show's run this summer, nine couples completed a laundry list of tasks to rehabilitate a series of homes, showing off their do-it-yourself skills, and sometimes their I-don't-know-how-todo-it skills as well. After the day's grueling tasks were done, the couples all had to live together in the house they were rehabbing. The trials and tribulations were worth it for these contestants though, because each of them wanted to win the ultimate prize: their very own dream home! The lucky and talented winners were Ben and Kasey, parents of four small children. They had hoped to win to ease the financial strain they had been under since their small business went under during the recession. The family of six now have the home they've always imagined and are well on the way to rebuilding their American dream. Their new dream home is located in the Preserve at Reed Mill community in Buford, Georgia. Called the "most legit name in home improvement," Mike Holmes is the host of Home Free, and helped Ben and Kasey master each task. He was not shy about
challenging them though or pushing them to learn new skills. With 30+ years experience as a licensed contractor, Holmes has demanding standards and guided all the couples to new heights in design and construction that surprised even them. Each week, a couple who didn't perform up to code was eliminated until the season finale when only Ben and Kasey were left. Edwards Andrews Homes was chosen to create the dream home given to the winner of this Home Free in part because of the recognition the home builder achieved for its Exact Design Experience center which opened last year in Alpharetta, Georgia. Using the newest technology, Edward Andrew helped to change the builder to owner relationship. They let consumers design the exact dream home they have always wanted, down to the last detail. Edwards Andrews helps to make the numerous decisions for both public and private spaces when creating a custom home more
“Custom homes work because they are designed to match an owner’s lifestyle and personal preferences,” says Simmel. “With our Exact Design experience, everyone can customize home decisions prior to the build.” manageable and personal. The Exact Design Center allows buyers to visualize home layouts in 3-D with space and finishes completed. These powerful tools, which eliminate costly in-construction structural changes and delays, were shown off to viewers during the season finale of Home Free. Caroline Simmel, senior vice president of marketing for Edward Andrews Homes, believes their creative approach to home design has truly set them a part. “Custom homes work because they are designed to match an owner’s lifestyle and personal preferences,” says Simmel. "With our Exact Design experience, everyone can customize home decisions prior to the build.” Edward Andrews has built 15 communities in the suburbs of Atlanta that preserve the natural beauty of the land. Their first Smyrna community, a townhome community called Lylebrook, will open early next year on Atlanta Rd. As the end of the Home Free contest neared, the surviving couples were able to use the extensive Edward Andrews Homes tools to complete their design and build tasks. By using the style and lifestyle quizzes, the design team created a manageable selection of design ideas for each couple. They matched the couple’s idea of a dream home to the exact one that was being built. The show’s winners, Ben and Kasey, were shocked to see their dreams had actually come true!

BIG FUN IN THE BIG EASY ARTICLE MARIA R. SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY PAT GARIN AND CHRIS GRANGER
N
ew Orleans. There's a reason they call it the Big Easy. There's a nonchalantness about the city that is refreshing, relaxing, and well...easy. Visitors need to stop trying to enforce their own agenda on this unique city and just go with the flow! Located about 460 miles from Atlanta, New Orleans is easy to get to by car or plane. Starting in late 2015, Southern Airlines, which operates out of the private Peachtree-Dekalb Airport, will help you get there in style. They plan to offer direct luxury jet service to New Orleans' Lakefront Airport, conveniently located close to the Central Business District. Once you get there this is no shortage of things to do, eat or drink. Check out some favorites in the New Orleans French Quarter. WHAT TO DO
Spend your days wandering through Jackson Square, stopping to appreciate the impressive Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France. Admire the unique architecture that is quintessentially New Orleans with French, Spanish, and Creole influence dripping everywhere. Let yourself absorb the more than 300 years of history around you. Go shopping on Royal Street, one of the oldest streets dating back to the French colonial period. Spend some time browsing at the art galleries such as Galerie Rue Royale, on one of the most expensive streets in the country. Stroll over to the Toulouse street warf and enjoy a special meal aboard the Steamboat Nachez. Or if you're not sure where to start, take one of the many walking tours available in the French Quarter and throughout New Orleans. One well-run tour company is NOLA Doubloon History and Heritage Tours. WHAT TO DRINK
It does not take much to find a reason to partake of a drink in New Orleans. If it's a day ending in "y" then that's a good enough reason to have something special! Head to Bourbon Street to let it all hang out and let go of as much of your inhibitions as you dare. While you're strolling down the packed streets, try one of the drinks New Orleans made famous: the Hurricane! For a slightly less bawdy experience, go down to Frenchman Street for jazz, reggae, blues and local music. Get away from the tourists and hang out with locals for some truly authentic N'awlins flavor. Pirates Alley is a great place for those who want to do some talking with their drinking. Be bold and try the (totally legal) absinthe drink called the Green Fairy at Pirates Alley Cafe. WHAT TO EAT
You must go to Cafe du Monde, open 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas and during hurricanes. Cafe du Monde only serves two things: chicory-based coffee, which can be mixed with milk for cafe au lait, and hot, fresh, sweet beignets with heaps of powdered sugar on

top. First time in New Orleans? Blow off a bit of powdered sugar and make a wish! Legend has it these sugared wishes come true! For a fancy and pricey dinner, head to the New Orleans mainstay, Arnaud's Restaurant. For the rest of the time, go to their sister restaurant Remoulade. It is casual and comfortable and the huge menu is impressive. This is the place you go when you don't know where to go. While you're in New Orleans, be sure to also get your fair share of classic New Orleans food including po-boys, crawfish étoufée, muffulettas, and if you are there on a Monday get to the restaurants early for their red beans and rice specials. You can come to New Orleans however you want, but just don't come on a diet. New Orleans is full of good times and good people. It is a place both the saints and the sinners can enjoy...especially since both of those people tend to live in all of us. There are not many reasons not to go to New Orleans. Parting Thoughts
Become a Wine Aficionado in 5 Easy Steps WORDS KIMBERLY WRIGHT
A
utumn is the perfect time to embrace wine. The heat and humidity are gone (for the most part) and wine can be sipped, not gulped because you're dying of thirst. This is the time for football on Saturdays, outdoor patios for dinner, and relaxing by the fireplace in the evenings. For anyone who wants to pair these fall activities with the perfect wine, here are five steps to knowing enough about wine to at least sound like an aficionado. 1. KNOW THE BASICS. Wines have five characteristics: acidity, body, fruit, sweetness and tannin. Acidity in wine is the tartness. Body (light, medium or heavy) refers to the richness of the wine and and how it feels in your mouth. It is also a determining factor in what it should be paired with. Fruit is the base ingredient and helps determine the flavor. The sweetness of a wine is determined by the amount of residual sugar in it. Tannins are the chemical compounds found in wine which can affect the aging, color and texture of the wine, and can be the cause of some "morning after" headaches. 2. UNDERSTAND THE LINGO. There are four main types of wines: white, red, rose and sparkling. White wine is the most popular and made from the fermentation of the uncolored inside pulp of grapes. Red wine is the second most popular and is produced from crushed black grapes, getting both flavor and color from this process. Rose wines are made from a wide variety of grapes and get some of their color from grape skins, but not 38
Vinings Lifestyle | October 2015
enough to make them red wines. Sparkling wines have a significant level of carbon dioxide in them to make them fizzy. Champagne is the ultimate example of a sparkling wine. Other lesser talked about wine types include ice wine, orange wine, fortified wine and dessert wine. 3. DO SOME SAMPLING. The "hard" part about becoming more well-versed in wine is that you have to drink it more (responsibly of course). You can buy several varieties and do your own tasting at home, or head out to a local wine tasting and try your hand out in public. Check out the Wine Cellars in Smyrna Market Village. Every Saturday afternoon, they host tastings of 5-6 different wines for only $5 per person. 4. PAIR AWAY. Challenge yourself to do some wine pairing with the dinners you are already cooking. Plan a meal based on the kind of wine you want to serve. And don't limit yourself to which food the "experts" say should be paired with which wine. Be bold! Try something new! 5. WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK FOR HELP. Of course, there's an app for that! Download the Next Glass app (nextglass.co) and let your smart phone suggest your next favorite wine or beer. Using science and technology, Next Glass can predict what kind of drink you'll love without all the fancy adjectives you don't care about anyway. Cheers!
