As long-time residents of Smyrna, my family and I have experienced the friendly, community-focused atmosphere that this area is famous for. From the events, local restaurants, schools, entertainment and more, we couldn’t be more proud to call this our home. We live in one of the most vibrant areas in metro Atlanta. All around town, you can feel the buzz in the air and see the growth with new businesses, growing businesses, growing families and more. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my awesome team (and neighbors), our outstanding advertisers, the City of Smyrna, Vinings Business Association, Smyrna Business Association, and Cobb Chamber of Commerce for their outstanding support of our publication.

Around Town HOUSE OF LU RENOVATION For Atlantans looking for upscale and trendy Asian cuisine, they now need to look no further than the House of Lu restaurant in historic Marietta Square. After its much-anticipated renovation, the restaurant is now sleek and modern while still serving the tasty food for which it has been known for years. After 17 years, the family-run business owners understood they needed to modernize their Asian restaurant, but they wanted to stay away from typical Asian décor. Enter award-winning interior designer Cassandra Buckalew, who has worked on many full scale interior design renovations both for businesses and on the residential side. She used her vision to create a hip, yet still authentic restaurant. Transforming with art Buckalew oversaw the entire renovation project and helped to transform the space from blah to beautiful. One of the most striking things she decided to do was to commission both Chinese and Vietnamese artwork to adorn the walls. She used these original art pieces to bring in key elements of these two cultures, both of which are represented in the Lu family, in an understated way. This artwork has also been able to create strong focal points throughout the restaurant. The circular bar and plush banquette seating around the wall is now the perfect place for meeting for drinks in the Marietta Square or sampling an order of some delicious coconut shrimp with friends. The House of Lu prides itself on being committed to using quality ingredients in their dishes and serving the Lu family’s original recipes. Since opening in 1997, the restaurant has garnered many fans, including famed chef and TV host, Alton Brand. He consistently lists House of Lu among his favorite Atlanta-area restaurants. The House of Lu is located at 89 Cherokee St. Marietta, GA, directly behind The Strand Theatre. It is open daily and offers catering and delivery options as well as dining in. SPROUTS SMYRNA GRAND OPENING One of the most anticipated events of the summer in Smyrna was the opening the area's first Sprouts Farmers Market. Sprouts is one of the fastest growing retailers in the country and opened their Smyrna location to the public on June 10. The store opened to enthusiastic crowds filling every available parking space and standing in line for the opportunity to be among the first to shop at the new store. The new store is located in the brand new Olde Ivy Village shopping center on the corner of South Cobb Dr. and East West Connector on the former site of a Home Depot Supply warehouse. Olde Ivy Village is now home to Krispy Kreme, Del Taco, Uncle Maddio's and several other key businesses. It is adjacent to RaceTrac. Sprouts offers fresh, organic produce The 28,000-square-foot Sprouts Farmers Market offers a variety of fresh, organic, natural foods at very competitive prices. In addition to fresh produce, they also offer a large selection of vitamins and supplements, packaged groceries, meat and seafood, baked goods, dairy products, bulk foods, frozen foods, and natural household and body care products. Sprouts caters to their customers' growing interest in health and wellness and celebrates the idea that their customers are active participants in deciding what food goes in their bodies. Sprouts Farmers Market is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, and operates 200 stores in 12 states, while employing more than 18,000 team members. With two more Sprouts Farmers Market stores opening in Georgia in late summer or early fall, there will be a total of seven stores in the state. All of the Sprouts stores are currently slated to be in the Atlanta metro area. 4330 East West Connector, Smyrna, Ga 30082 Sprouts.com

ri Adams is a wife and mother of two daughters, ages 6 and 3. Originally from New York City, she moved to the Vinings area nearly 15 years ago. She is a published author of two books, "Save Money, Savor the Day" and "Money Makers vs. Time Wasters" and an award-winning parenting and frugal lifestyle blogger at LovePeaceandTinyFeet.com and SaverInTheCity.com. Her most recent endeavor is the creation of an online store featuring inspirational graphic tees. In addition to writing, she enjoys traveling, Zumba and kickboxing, and spending time with her family and friends.
WHAT MADE YOU START A BUSINESS?
I've actually always been an entrepreneur at heart. As a teenager, I participated in a program called the young entrepreneurs program (Y.E.P) offered at Columbia University where I learned some invaluable information on how to start a business, from the initial phase of business plan writing to funding a business. Now as an adult and as a mom, I've just been so fortunate to be able to turn the things I'm passionate about into an actual business.
REAL WIVES OF VININGS
work extremely hard to balance home and work and they also get to see the results. They see that even when things don't go my way, I never give up and am always just trying to learn and grow. Knowing that they are watching me and paying attention also becomes my motivation to be the best mompreneur and just overall human being I can be. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER MOMS INTERESTED IN STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Just do it! Seriously, if you have a dream, don't be afraid to make that dream a reality. Do your research. Have a plan. Connect with other mompreneurs and give it your best shot. You'd be amazed at how awesome you can be! WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE VININGS AREA?
Vinings was my first home when I moved to Georgia back in 2001. Even back then, I loved the convenience of being close to everything and every place I needed to be. Great schools, shopping, restaurants, parks, you name it! I love that there's always been a sense of community amidst the hustle and bustle of a major metropolitan city.
HOW DOES BEING A "MOMPRENUER" AFFECT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?
More than anything, I like to believe that being a mompreneur affects and inspires my daughters and other young girls in my life. They see me 12

eet Kathryn Johnson’s dog, Daisy! Originally from Eufaula, Alabama, Kathryn is now the marketing and communications manager for Unsukay Community of Business, which includes the restaurants Muss & Turner's, Local Three and Common Quarter. She loves the Vinings/Smyrna area because of the "ITP" accessibility to Atlanta, but also because it is laidback like an "OTP" neighborhood. Kathryn thinks Vinings is great because of the little pocket of great restaurants and shopping. It is never too crowded, and that makes it feel like one of Atlanta's best kept secrets. Plus, those who live in Vinings have access to the Chattahoochee, which Kathryn says is one of Atlanta's best features! WHAT IS YOUR PET?
Daisy is a Shiba Inu/Terrier Mix. HOW DID SHE COME TO LIVE WITH YOU?
I adopted her from the Atlanta Humane SocietyMansell Campus. 14
Vinings Lifestyle | September 2015
WHY IS YOUR PET SPECIAL?
She's the best travel buddy! She adapts to new places and people really quickly and enjoys long car rides. I love being able to bring her on weekend trips. WHAT DOES SHE ENJOY ABOUT LIVING IN VININGS?
Daisy loves going to the Paces Mill Landing on the Chattahoochee River for walks. She's not much of a swimmer, but likes to wade in the water and watch wildlife. IS THERE A PET-RELATED CHARITY OR CAUSE YOU SUPPORT?
We love the Atlanta Humane Society! They do amazing work in finding pets their forever homes. They place about 8,000 pets into forever homes each year. Adopting a dog or cat from the AHS is a win-win situation. The pets get to go to a safe, loving forever home and the pet owner gets a friend for life! The AHS also provides lowcost spay and neuter services throughout the state to further their mission of ending pet homelessness and overpopulation in Georgia.

en years ago, Ryan Turner and Todd Mussman wanted a neighborhood restaurant they would want to hang out in. One that served fresh food in an inviting atmosphere. One that had an "everybody knows your name" type of vibe. When they couldn't find it, they decided to open one themselves. Thus began Muss & Turner’s. Muss & Turner’s has become the neighborhood clubhouse Ryan and Todd envisioned. It's the type of place where the serving staff greet customers by name and the owners are treated like family members by both their loyal customers and their staff. Their goal in starting Muss & Turner’s was to provide high quality food and drinks as well as service in Smyrna. They saw no reason people who lived in the area should have to travel to Midtown or Buckhead or anywhere else for great food. CONTINUED >
MUSS & TURNER’S (CONTINUED)
Photo credit: Mia McCorkle, JTM Photography Atlanta
WHAT MAKES MUSS & TURNER’S DIFFERENT
From the beginning, Ryan and Todd made a commitment to locally sourced ingredients. While these are buzz words now, that was not the case 10 years ago. From the beginning, they focused on finding high quality ingredients and building strong relationships with farmers in the area. They haven't wavered from those founding ideas. Muss & Turner’s prides itself on serving high quality products because they understand that people will pay for quality. Guests have appreciated their attempt to bring such special food to Smyrna. While the food may bring them accolades, it's the people at Muss & Turner’s that keeps customers coming back. "Our secret sauce is the people," says Ryan. "Our staff connects with guests. They help our customers to feel recognized and appreciated, and then they trust us. Without trust it's hard to make it in the restaurant world. People have a lot of choices. But they will find the good stuff if it's out there." "NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY."
Ryan and Todd have had their fair share of trials since opening Muss & Turner’s a decade ago. They have worked to overcome the distinction of being "just a deli" and have made sure Atlantans now think of them as a bistro serving a wide variety of food. Most notably though, the trial of surviving (and actually thriving) despite the recession, may have been their most impressive triumph. "We planted seeds prior to the recession that created a lot of loyalty," Todd explains. “During that time, people weren't going to gamble when deciding where they were going to go out to eat. They were going to go to a place they could trust." With a shrewd business sense, Ryan and Todd focused on providing the same quality food while increasing more cost-conscious options. They made sure there was no pretense and just good, hearty food. They doubled down on their commitment to be the best restaurants they could be and that kept their customers coming back. Despite the downturn, Ryan and Todd both smile with quiet pride when discussing how their business, unlike so many, thrived during the recession. BEING PART OF THE COMMUNITY
Both Ryan and Todd live in Smyrna. They shop there, raise families there, and educate their kids there. It is obvious that despite northeastern roots, these guys are southern at heart. And it seems like southerners have embraced them right back. When asked why they chose Smyrna as the location for their business, the easy answer from both owners came quickly: "Why not?" They love the geographical advantage Smyrna has in relation to the rest of the metro area. They like the schools and the welcoming, community-feel of their neighborhoods. When they first opened Muss & Turner’s, there were only six restaurants within 1.5 square miles. Today there are 25 to 30. Ryan and Todd welcome the new businesses though, choosing to focus on themselves instead of their competition. "We are of the camp of the more the merrier," says Todd with an easy smile. "The more that this area becomes known as a dining destination, the more we will attract folks from other places. And then we all win." "We love where we live. This is our home and community," explains Ryan."We are proud to say we are in Smyrna, that we have contributed, that we CONTINUED > are a part of this community." September 2015 | Vinings Lifestyle

MUSS & TURNER’S (CONTINUED)
Giving Back
The Muss & Turner's secret sauce: Good food. Good drinks. Good people. Photo credit: Mia McCorkle, JTM Photography Atlanta
Both Ryan Turner and Todd Mussman are on the board of the non-profit, The Giving Kitchen. The Giving Kitchen was created in 2012 after an abundance of love and financial support was given for the well-loved chef, Ryan Hidinger, who had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer. The fund was able to offset medical expenses not covered by his insurance until his death in 2014. Since then, it has provided financial support for restaurant workers dealing with unanticipated hardships. Over 175 grants have been given and an excess of $360,000 awarded. The money is raised from donations, employee giving, and several fundraisers throughout the year. The next step for The Giving Kitchen is to fulfill Ryan Hidinger's dream restaurant concept, Staplehouse. It is slated to open this September. Spearheaded by his widow, Jennifer (Jen) Hidinger, Staplehouse will be the for-profit arm of the business. All after-tax profits from the fine dining Staplehouse will go to fund The Giving Kitchen. The Staplehouse will be located at 541 Edgewood Ave in Atlanta. Check out Staplehouse.com for more information.

Tech Today
Meet Hello Alfred, Your $25 Personal Butler ARTICLE DONALD J. HAWKINS
T
here is definitely an app for everything these days and one of them is making a big splash for what it can do for you in real life. Hello Alfred is an app that connects you with a real live personal butler to take care of all your weekly errands--from grocery shopping and dropping off dry cleaning, to tailoring your new suit pants and sending a package to your mother in Milwaukee. Hello Alfred does all that and even more! There are plenty of apps that handle personal tasks individually. Download Homejoy to get your house cleaned. Instacart will pick up your groceries and deliver them to your front door. TaskRabbit allows you to post virtually any random errand you can think about and someone will fulfill your request. But Hello Alfred does everything! For $25 per week, Hello Alfred coordinates all of those features and more on your behalf. Customers are assigned their own home manager, also called an Alfred, and those managers take care of the work that is request, in part by using some of the services mentioned above. Like a true butler, they use your credit card and have the keys to your home in hand, so you don’t need to be present while the magic is happening. Need your groceries put away? Alfred will make sure the milk is not left out. Need to send your spouse a gift? Alfred will select a florist and choose the best bouquet. Have a leaking toilet? Alfred will review, hire a plumber and make sure the job is done right. All of these tasks are done on one day a week, every week, with no burden or thought from you. In this new age of all things tech, Hello Alfred pushes the envelope to a completely new level. Considering in many cases you would never see your ‘Alfred,’ using Hello Alfred may come to be the most important "invisible" thing in your life. After launching in September 2014, the company behind Hello Alfred has raised over $12 million dollars in capital and plans to scale to other large metropolitan (hopefully including the Atlanta area) in the next 12 months.

ompact crossover utility vehicles are one of the hottest segments, mostly because these sensibly sized vehicles are a perfect fit for empty nesters, young couples or families with two kids. In many ways, they’re the contemporary equivalent of a station wagon and they’re much cooler than a minivan. Acura’s premium compact RDX is an excellent example of why the segment is so popular. It has most of the amenities one expects in an entry-level luxury car yet the cargo space, easily expanded by folding down the seat, is big enough for bags of yard mulch, home improvement materials or the occasional bicycle or two. The RDX styling bears a familial resemblance to the larger MDX but it is not quite as visually exciting as some of its newer competitors. That can actually be a good thing as gimmicky styling doesn’t always age well. Base prices start at $35,790 for front-wheel drive and top out at $40,890 for all-wheel drive with the Technology Package. That is the model I drove from Acura’s press fleet. The leather-trimmed interior has an abundance of soft-touch materials, and the instrument panel is pleasingly styled. The front seats are among the best I’ve experienced because they have support in

all the right places. Straightforward controls are easy to use, and the 8-inch LCD screen in the center of the dash delivers an excellent picture from the rearview camera. All RDXs have Bluetooth connectivity, a rear view camera with three viewing options, a Pandora radio interface, SMS text messaging function, dual-zone climate control and a power moonroof. The test car’s Technology Package included a voice-activated navigation system, an eight-inch LCD screen in the center of the dash, rearview camera and the ELS 10-speaker audio package that is among the best in any car, regardless of price. The tech package also includes AcuraLink with Real-Time Traffic, a system that alerts the driver to traffic congestion and offers automatic re-routing. Real-Time Weather is also a part of the package. The RDX sits on a 105.7-inch wheelbase that is 2.6 inches longer than that of a Honda CR-V, for example, and it is about five inches longer overall. Acura is the American luxury division of Honda. The RDX is not related to the popular CR-V, other than coming from the same company. Because the RDX is taller than a sedan it is not quite as agile in corners. The upright driving position gives good visibility and makes it easy to get in and out.
The V-6 in the RDX delivers 273 horsepower. All-wheel-drive fuel economy is rated at 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway. The new all-wheel drive system is simpler and lighter than the one it replaces. When starting from rest, power is shifted to the rear wheels, but then power is distributed from front to rear in concert with the vehicle stability system depending on road conditions. The rear wheels are decoupled on the highway for reduced drag and better fuel economy. The transitions are seamless and done automatically. PRICE The base price of the test vehicle was $39,995. Destination charges brought the sticker price to $40,890. WARRANTY Four years or 50,000 miles with a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. To get in touch with Tom Strongman, send e-mail to TStrongman@kc.rr.com. AT A GLANCE POINT: The RDX is almost perfectly sized. It is big enough to haul things yet small enough to be maneuverable in urban settings. The cabin is plush and well equipped. COUNTERPOINT: The previous RDX had a spunky personality but the new one is a bit less sporty.
2015 ACURA RDX AWD TECH • Engine: 3.5-liter, 273-horsepower V-6 • Transmission: Six-speed automatic • All-wheel drive • Wheelbase: 105.7 inches • Curb weight: 3,852 pounds • Base price: $39,995 • As driven: $40,890 • Mpg rating: 19 in the city, 27 on the highway

barter is smarter than you think...
When the bill came it was paid for with diamonds … that’s how barter works. Imagine running your business and paying your bills with trade rather than cash. Thousands of businesses right here in Metro Atlanta are doing just that, including David Douglas Diamonds & Jewelry located in Marietta. “The best reason to use barter is it allows us to increase cash flow by increasing sales AND reducing costs, said Store Manager Jen Foster. “Every month DDD&J uses its barter ‘dollars’ to purchase advertising, pest control, lawn care, food, and travel. We trade what we have for what we need. Basically, you have the ability to buy goods and services at your cost – it’s brilliant!”
SWEET DESIGNS for all OCCASIONS
The Barter Company is a recognized leader in the barter industry with offices in Georgia and Florida. The company provides businesses with an alternative currency network using barter dollars instead of cash to handle transactions. The Barter Company actively manages the network and acts as a third-party records keeper by providing clients with monthly statements. Trade coordinators work with individual member businesses to make the barter experience simple and smooth. For more information, visit www.thebartercompany.com or call 770-591-4343.

Staycation
D
o you want a little break from the day-to-day grind but don’t have the time for a full vacation? You need a staycation! Pack your bags and book a few nights away right in Vinings for a nice break from the everyday. My family and I recently spent the weekend at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel and Convention Center, a AAA 4-Diamond hotel located in the Vinings area. Renaissance Waverly offers all of my favorite amenities for a vacation from a variety of onsite dining options,
TAKE A HOME GROWN VACATION IN VININGS WORDS KENDRA WILLIAMS PIERSON
relaxing garden areas for short walks, a fitness center so I don’t miss a workout and a spa so I can really feel like I’m on a vacation. One huge benefit for taking a staycation is the shortened travel time. I spend a lot of time traveling for business, and after dealing with all the hassles travel involves, I have learned to value the ability to drive just 30 minutes away to reconnect with my family. Renaissance Waverly is a luxury hotel in all aspects and staying there for a few days helped me relax so I could concentrate on my family. On our staycation, I was able to let my stress slip away. I slept in and didn't worry about preparing meals, washing dishes, or doing laundry. I was able to let loose and have a little fun! Another benefit of taking a staycation is knowing the area well enough to feel safe, but still having the opportunity to act as a tourist. I’ve driven by the Renaissance Waverly all the time and never stopped to realize the beauty of their gardens. I was able to spend some time with my family on the serene walking path where all sounds of the city were totally blocked out. The rooftop pool with a skyline view let me see the city I've lived in for most of my adult life in a new way. And I liked it! A staycation is definitely something worth considering for any family who feels disconnected, unfocused and stressed out. With less time spent getting to a destination, you can have more time spent relaxing and bonding with your family. After being a tourist in our city, you may look at the Vinings area, and maybe yourself, a little differently. The Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel and Convention Center is located at 2450 Galleria Parkway Atlanta, GA 30339.
