pring is here! As the weather shifts, many look forward to making plans for travel and outdoor adventures. This travel and outdoors issue is about inspiring those plans and getting back outside. My family has been returning to the same vacation spot in Southern Florida for over 35 years, now bringing the fourth generation of our family to this special place. Many of my fondest memories are of the quality time spent there watching the sunset, exploring the beaches, playing countless pool games and spending time with family and new friends. Our favorite vacation tradition is to head to the tip of the island each night to watch the sunset. On the evening this photo was taken, we noticed rose petals scattered on the sand from an earlier wedding. My niece and I gathered up a few of the rose petals and tossed them into the air, jumping with great delight right as a sailboat happened to be passing by in the background. This photo captures the beauty of my favorite place and the carefree, childlike spirit you can find when you get away and relax on vacation. This month we hope to inspire your travel plans through our reader vacation photos. We also share stories on a local couple’s dream sailing vacation and the fastest growing “hotel,” Airbnb. We also have tips on how to get your skin ready for the outdoors with advice from the expert dermatologists at Dermatology & Surgery. As the flowers begin to bloom and leaves return to the trees, it’s a great time to head outside. Inside this issue you’ll find expert tips to create your own outdoor living space. You’ll also get a look at a few of the things that have made YMCA Camp Campbell Gard such a special place for campers, families and retreats for the past 90 years. These are just a few of the many great stories you’ll find inside this month. Pull up a lawn chair and find a spot in the sun to enjoy this travel and outdoors edition of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle and plan your great escape. organization with a mission to promote the advancement of women in the transportation field. Seven WTS volunteers explored the field of engineering with the classes: what to expect if students were planning to attend college for engineering, salaries, the credential process and the different work environments for an engineer. Under the direction of the volunteers, the students worked together to build a beam bridge using straws, paper clips and masking tape and tested the bridge strength with glass beads. Next, they built a suspension bridge out of the same materials with added reinforcements of dental floss and tested the bridge load until failure. The presentation was organized by WTS member Sue Farver-Springer. More information about WTS and its support for engineering students is available online. WTSInternational.org

SIX STEPS TO SOLD

H

oping to spring out of your home this season? With more than fifteen years of experience, Scot Avery, local Real Estate expert with Huff Realty, knows exactly what you need to do.

In his 15 years of experience, Avery has been listening closely to buyers’ comments as they view homes for sale. He sees firsthand what

catches their attention—both positive and negative. Follow his simple tips to make sure your house stands out this spring.

1. GET PROFESSIONAL HELP

Avery advises that the first thing you should do when you are thinking about putting your home on the market is find an expert you can trust. “Get a professional opinion—somebody who knows what they’re talking about, who’s got a lot of experience and a lot of success. Have them walk through your house and tell you what to do,” he says.

2. CURB APPEAL COUNTS

Look at your house as if you are seeing it for the first time. Remove yourself emotionally and make a list of what needs to be fixed and polished. “A buyer often gets to a house for a showing before the agent,” Avery says. “They’re sitting outside the house, just looking at it while they are waiting to go inside.” Make sure your first impression is positive and inviting—make your porch, stoop and entry shine. Put a fresh coat of paint on the front door and shutters. Make sure the door lock functions smoothly. “A fresh layer of mulch is inexpensive and easy to do; it makes a world of difference,” Avery advises. 12

West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle | April 2016

3. GO WITH THE FLOW

Avery says that for many home buyers, the first walk through is “all about the floor plan and the flow.” Give each room a clear and single purpose. Declutter your living spaces. Let your living room be a living room—not a living room with an office and a dining area. Avery suggests removing any furniture that stops the flow of your house as you walk through. “Use a neighbor’s garage or rent a storage unit to store your auxiliary stuff,” Avery says. “It will be worth it when your house sells sooner.” 4. LIGHTEN UP

This is no time to think about your electric bill. “When you have a showing, it’s important to have all of your lights on. Light is flattering,” Avery says. If you have any dark corners, he suggests accent lighting. Let the springtime sunshine in! Clean your windows and open the curtains and shades.

5. SIMPLIFY & ORGANIZE

“Buyers want to buy a house from someone who is clean and organized,” Avery notes. “Make your closets look like The Gap and your pantry look like the shelves of a grocery store.” Clear your tabletops, counters and even walls. “You don’t want anything polarizing on display,” Avery says. “Pack away religious and political items.” 6. MAKE SMALL INVESTMENTS FOR A BIG IMPACT

Meet with your realtor before you start spending. An experienced realtor will guide you to spend minimal money for big impact to sell your home. “Before you spend a dime, make sure you are going to get that dime back,” Avery says. “A big impact, for a small investment is paint. Nothing goes farther. You can completely change a room for $25,” says Avery. “Young buyers seem to be attracted to pale grays, while Empty Nesters prefer earth tones.” New or freshly cleaned flooring can transform a space. Steam clean carpets or even replace them if your realtor advises it. Put away

your rugs to show off your wood floors. Update your kitchen and baths with inexpensive upgrades. “Get rid of the brass hardware and dated fixtures. Replace knobs, faucets and light fixtures,” counsels Avery. With Avery’s toolbox of tips, you may not have to open your actual toolbox—and maybe not even your wallet. Start packing!

The Skin You're In GET READY FOR VACATION ARTICLE ABBEY MCMAHON

W

ith the warm summer months drawing nearer, many are planning their family vacations and trips to the pool. Whether you want to prepare your body for the sunshine, treat yourself to a facial or simply check in with experts to learn more about caring for your skin, Scott Grevey, M.D., and his team at Dermatology & Surgery of Southern Ohio are ready to help you gear up for the summertime. With an office located off Cincinnati-Dayton Road in Liberty Township, this practice of four providers and more than 30 staff members offers many ways to get your body vacation-ready. No need to sweat the shorts and bikinis this summer. Their state-ofthe-art laser hair removal is one of the most popular services booked during this time of year. According to Head Nurse Kim Gildea, their brand new hair removal lasers use the latest technology to remove hair completely from the patient’s skin. “It’s safe on all skin types, from the lightest of skin types to the darkest, and it usually only takes a few treatments,” Gildea says. In addition to laser hair removal, the dermatology team also performs tattoo removals and leg vein treatment. Grevey has treated leg veins for more than 25 years. “The laser technology has advanced so much that we’re now able to treat [veins] with a much quicker response with fewer side effects, and the results are quite excellent,” Grevey says. For those who want a relaxing day before the busyness of summer hits, Dermatology & Surgery offers a relaxation room 16

West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle | April 2016

where a licensed esthetician provides a variety of facials based upon the skin type and need of the patient. From an acne facial to an exfoliating or calming facial, the team makes certain that the patient’s skin is cared for and prepped for the warmer months ahead. According to the team, one of the most important ways to keep skin healthy throughout the year is simple: wear sunscreen. “I feel like a broken record because I tell all of our patients this,” Grevey says, “but there is no ‘safe’ tan. A lot of patients will comment that they want a base tan before they go vacationing, but any suntan can have deleterious effects.” Choosing a sunscreen doesn’t have to be complicated. “The main thing with sunscreen is you have to find one you like,” Gildea says. “If you don’t like it, you won’t use it. We have products here from Skin Medica that are great. They have products for all different skin types that don’t smell like sunscreen.” Grevey also recommends patients simply go to a pharmacy or grocery store to find a sunscreen that works for them. “Some of the more expensive ones might feel more pleasing to the skin, but there are some over-the-counter [sunscreens] that can be great,” Grevey says. In addition to wearing sunscreen, Nurse and Marketing Coordinator, Sara Harris, also emphasizes the importance of wearing hats, sunglasses and other protective clothing. And above all else, don’t use tanning beds. “Tanning beds might make you look good now, but you’re going to pay for it in the long run,” says Harris. “You’re going to subject yourself to premature aging, discoloration, and of course you’re just opening yourself up to cancers in the future.” With his team helping patients prepare for the warmer months, it’s easy to see the passion that lies within Grevey and his staff. “We have a great team,” Grevey says. “We try hard to provide the most innovative care for our patients with the utmost respect. Helping and healing patients is really our motivating factor.”

Open-Air Living Escape to Your Own Backyard

ARTICLE TERA MICHELSON

O

utdoor living has come a long way from the patch of

grass and picnic table of the 1950s. For the same cost as a vacation, you can transform your yard into an additional living space—a relaxing refuge from the stresses of daily life. With outdoor rooms, you can open your back door to a mini-vacation every day. Start planning your dream yard now with advice from our local experts in outdoor living: Damon Mundey of The Turf Tailor, Praddy Mangat of BOVA Contemporary Furniture and Kerry Goode of Delhi Flower and Garden Center. Damon Mundey explains, “Outdoor living is all about transforming your outside to be livable, comfortable space as an extension of your house. When the weather turns, everyone wants to be outside. Create an environment outside that is comfortable to be in.” Kerry Goode adds that you need to evaluate how you want to use your space. “You’ve got to think about what you want your outdoor space to be used for: Do you entertain? Is it for kids? Is it for you to relax?” Which outdoor room suits your style? 20

popular outdoor kitchenette. Tap into your inner grill master and create a space to cook up something special. Mundey helps clients design

hardscapes and landscapes for their dream yards and builds everything from the simple to the elaborate. “A popular kitchenette idea encloses the grill space and adds outdoor surfaces for cooking. You can add extended counters for a bar with stone walls for seating,” he says. For a touch of gourmet, Goode suggests that you grow herbs in the grilling area, so you can snip fresh rosemary, thyme and parsley to top your grilled chicken and steaks. FOR THE KIDS

OPEN-AIR LIVING (CON TI N U ED)

Children need room to roam. FOR THE KIDS

Remember to leave space in your design for a plot of well-maintained lawn for outdoor games. Mundey advises that you add

space for the adults in the play area, too. He says, “Incorporate livable space around the kids’ play sets—bench seats for parents, and flower beds that make your garden stand out.” Goode suggests that you let your landscaping define the space in your outdoor room. Plants separate your yard from your neighbors for privacy as you refuel.

Goode counsels that you keep your garden kid-friendly. He says, “Get help identifying which plants to add to your outdoor living spaces.

SAIL AWAY How the Sullivans Spent Their Summer Vacation ARTICLE TOM MAY

D

o you remember the essay you had to write in grade school? “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” was the dreaded back-to-school writing assignment because most of the time summer vacation wasn’t that exciting. For West Chester residents Steve and Charmaine Sullivan, that essay can write itself. The adventurous couple are firm believers in the importance of vacations that make memories and enrich life experiences. They travel abroad whenever they can. Last summer, they had one of their best vacations ever. The Sullivans embarked on an eleven-night, five country cruise aboard the Royal Clipper, one of the largest, full-rigged sailing vessels in the world. Their adventure started with a two-night stay in Rome before sailing to ports of call that included Ponza, a little known chain of islands off the coast of Italy; Sorrento, where the nearby ruins of Pompeii can be seen; ports along the Adriatic coast; and concluded with a sunrise sail into Venice.

CHASING DREAMS

John Lennon wrote, “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” Cruise ship vacations are often centered around dreams. The Sullivans have found that different cruise lines appeal to specific clientele. “Some are noted for older passengers, some for partiers, some for families, and some for more well-traveled folks.” What are your dreams? A honeymoon? A festive celebration? A special anniversary? If you can dream it, you can sail to find it. Dream chasers have to be planners. “Typically, Steve and I agree on some place that we would like to visit, for what length of time, and roughly what kinds of things we might like to do.” Then, Charmaine digs in and does research. She sketches out in more detail the things they would like to experience, and then decides how to best thread those experiences together. A slow driving trip allows soaking in the culture at a leisurely pace. High-speed trains allow for a quick seasoning to major cities. When it comes to the cruise itself, smaller is better for the Sullivans. “We are not the type of folks who enjoy the larger ships. Our Royal Clipper ship had room for 230 people, but only had 173 passengers,” Charmaine says. “You get to know most of your fellow travelers. We

VACATION IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH You deserve a vacation! According to the International Vacation Deprivation Study, over 30 percent of Americans do not take a vacation at all. Research shows that vacations are beneficial to the health of the individual, the productivity of companies and the vigor of the American economy. Vacations refresh and renew our spirits at work and at home.

BENEFITS AT WORK Business research shows that employees come back from vacation filled with creativity and innovation. Workers in creative fields gain new perspectives and ideas, fueled by their new experiences. The workers on an assembly line are more productive because they have spent relaxing time away.

BENEFITS AT HOME According to many psychologists, one of the biggest benefits of taking vacations is the positive

really enjoyed getting to know people from all over the world. There were 13 countries represented on the cruise. Announcements were made in three languages.” EXPANDING HORIZONS

Traveling to other countries can open a world of new experiences. The different cultures reveal different and unique ways of thinking and doing things. While traveling abroad presents many “bucket list” experiences like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Coliseum in Rome, Charmaine notices that the things that “made the greatest impression and brought the most enjoyment during our travels are the off-the-beaten path experiences where you learn more about the people and local culture.” SAILING AWAY

One of the reasons that the Sullivans enjoy traveling abroad is because of the slower pace of life. “Life seems to be more balanced and slower in other countries, something we can learn from,” Charmaine shares. “Meals are not grabbed on the go as they are in the United States.” The meals are more focused, using high quality ingredients that are fresh and

in-season. One is allowed to sit down and savor—both the flavors of the food and the flavors of relationships. The Sullivans took several trips on smaller sailboats, before they “upgraded” to the Royal Clipper last summer. “On our very first Windjammer cruise, we were instructed to meet at a dock in St. Martin. At one end of the dock was a large tender that was heading out to a big cruise ship. At the other end was a dinky, little rowboat that was heading to the Windjammer ship. But as our ship left the dock under full sail, it was the cruise ship passengers that were flocked to one side to take pictures of us—a priceless moment.” How will you spend your summer vacation? In the margins of their summer essay, the Sullivans are already making plans for their next adventure on the high seas. April 2016 | West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle

ed and breakfasts have their roots in colonial America, when travel was harsh and lodgings were scarce. In the centuries that followed the first B&Bs, pop culture has had some fun with them in road trip comedies and romantic films. Silver screen B&Bs are always the same: old, out-of-the-way homes owned by elderly kooks with an affinity for ceramic knick-knacks and cold sandwiches. For decades there was nothing modern about the bed and breakfast. All that changed when the Internet gave proprietors a convenient way to

26

West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle | April 2016

list their rooms for all to see and mobile technology streamlined the process through apps like Airbnb. Founded in 2008, Airbnb is an online marketplace for those looking to list or book a room or home. According to their website, Airbnb boasts over 2,000,000 listings across the world. With just a few clicks on their popular mobile app, travelers can find a room in more than 34,000 cities in more than 190 countries. Whether you’re looking for a hip, urban loft, a chic seaside villa or a historic European castle, Airbnb offers all varieties of places to stay. Some of those places are right here in West Chester and Liberty Township. Amanda isn’t the stereotypical B&B owner you see in the movies—she’s not elderly, and she’s no shut-in. A Southern California transplant, she, her husband, and their son, moved to the area three years ago when positions at Procter & Gamble beckoned. Amanda listed their guest room on Airbnb after fixing it up, and she’s had a steady stream of visitors and income since. According to her, there is nothing particularly spectacular about the guest room, except that it is well-kept. “It’s your typical bedroom,” she says. “It’s about 15x20 square feet, it has a Queen bed and a TV. In terms of furniture, it has a dresser and a chaise lounge.” Amanda also offers lodgers a private bathroom fully stocked with P&G products and access to all

common areas of her home. She reports, however, that travelers rarely use much of the common space. “Some people will make a meal in the kitchen, or have a glass of wine on the deck. One long-term guest was a big fan of The Walking Dead, so he used to watch it on the projector screen in the basement. But it’s not like we entertain anyone; people spend 90% of their time in the guest room,” she says. People stay in Amanda’s home for a variety of reasons. She gets a lot of one-night guests in town for weddings, college graduations, or the Western & Southern Open. She’s even welcomed a retired Australian couple traveling the world by staying exclusively in rooms listed on Airbnb. A couple of guests, in town to complete consulting contracts, have stayed for months at a time. No matter where her guests have come from, the age bracket they fall into, or the length of their stay, Amanda has had nothing but positive experiences. Part of the reason Airbnb is so popular is that it goes to considerable lengths to ensure the safety and success of its users. All initial communication is done via the Airbnb website or app, and users cannot list or book a room without uploading a photo. Also, Airbnb prevents the exchange of personal information like phone numbers and email addresses until a room is booked. The company offers to take professional photographs of listings and provides a free “Host Guarantee” that commits to reimbursing eligible hosts for damages up to $1 million. Airbnb has done a remarkable job eliminating fears and objections people may have to using their service. Your seldom-used guest room could be an asset. From corporate contractors to vacationers looking for thrills at Kings Island, out-of-towners are here year-round, and some of them look to Airbnb for a place to stay. As more businesses move into the region and the area’s reputation as a family-entertainment destination grows, so does the value of every unused bed in your home. Listing a room on Airbnb is a proven way to generate income, make new friends and show visitors why West Chester and Liberty Township are fantastic places to live.

hile we shop and dine at Liberty Center, we can make a difference. All we have to do is park our vehicle in one of

the 204 best parking spots at the mall—the street spots with Change for Charity parking meters. Managed by the Liberty Center Foundation, Change for Charity collects parking meter fees to contribute to six local charities each year. Change for Charity features each selected beneficiary for a two-month span. Funds collected from designated parking meters during those months are donated to the organization. During its allotted time, the charity is promoted on the property via LED screens, signage and online at the Liberty Center website. “The beneficiaries were chosen by board members of the Liberty Center Foundation,” explains Kevin Cedik, General Manager of Liberty Center. “These six groups are making a significant impact on our community, and we are happy to support their causes." Annie Droege, Director of EDGE Teen Center, one of the organizations benefiting from Change for Charity, states it well. “We are so grateful for the support of Liberty Center. Not only does it help us continue our effective work with teens, but also inspires us to offer volunteer services back to them.” The 2016 charities chosen by Liberty Center Foundation are esteemed in the Cincinnati area, and have excellent reputations for being effective in the work they conduct. Here's a brief look at each group selected to receive support from the Change for Charity parking meters.
