his month’s issue features some of my favorite women here in Fort Worth. I have the distinct privilege of calling a couple of these ladies “friend”. Each month when I decide on what stories to do, I think of the people that I have come in contact with, and which ones had a positive impact on me. Darla Bettencourt keeps the west side blossoming, while Bonnie Pressley brings her amazing sense of style to enhance the homes across the city. The “Wilco Girls” are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet. If you read the name Kat Swift and it sounds familiar, that is because for over 2 years Kat shot some of the fantastic pictures in West FW. Dr. Jennifer Snow and I met several months ago and became fast friends, her talent and huge heart make her a special breed of doctor. I have some of the greatest friends a girl could ever ask for. They have supported me, lectured me, dried my tears and made me laugh more than anyone else ever could. Each has a unique place in my heart and I dedicate this month’s issue to them, they know who they are! As always, we hope to see you around town.

The Fundraising Professionals FORT WORTH'S AFP PROMOTES THE ETHICAL STANDARDS THAT MAKE FUNDRAISING BETTER FOR EVERYONE.

n the homepage for the Fort Worth Metro Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, an evocative quote appears front and center: “Philanthropy is based on the voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life.” Anyone who has taken the time to volunteer or offered a donation understands the unique sense of satisfaction that arises from these efforts. The “charitable feeling” has been documented through a host of scientific research, including a 2008 study from Harvard Business School that revealed how giving money to others brought more benefits to personal happiness that spending it on oneself.

What goes around also comes around: those who scoff at notions of karma would do well to read up on sociological studies on the communal benefits of generosity. In short, philanthropic exchanges promote a wider sense of trust and cooperation; this strengthening of interpersonal ties within a community can generate broader positive social interactions — in other words, an extensive and reciprocal altruism that ultimately benefits the giver. This last point gets showcased perfectly in the mission and efforts of Fort Worth’s Association of Fundraising Professionals. AFP Fort Worth has distinguished itself among the 30,000 member national organization as the chapter with the highest number of Certified Fund Raising Executives, a statistic that speaks volumes about the community’s commitment to helping others. 12

West FW Lifestyle | October 2016

“As AFP members, we strive to strengthen the community we’re in,” says Vicky Payne, director of public relations for AFP Fort Worth. “We deliver high quality professional training, and promote an awareness of the organization through networking.” The stated goals of AFP Fort Worth give insight into the value of this unique partnership of dedicated professionals. Alongside a commitment to financially sustainable operations, the promotion of itself as a leader in ethical philanthropy, and inclusive recruitment efforts, the presentation of high-quality professional development stands as a primary objective. “The more people we can train in fundraising, the more it helps philanthropic organizations fulfill their missions and visions,” says Vicky. “It’s all about making a positive difference.” The members of AFP Fort Worth — many of whom are women — display the diversity of philanthropic interests in our community. The 200 members represent at least 117 nonprofit organizations, including seven universities. Forty-two individual members have the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential, a professional certification that measures the highest standards of fundraising practice. Throughout the trainings that provide the primary benefit of AFP membership, the organization emphasizes its code of ethical standards as the proper foundation for fundraising intent. Donors can trust that AFP members will safeguard personal information, and provide ethical advice about the value of contributions. Any worries about the use of contributed funds can be set aside, as AFP members always practice proper stewardship and act in accordance with donors’ intentions.

For those of us in Fort Worth, our local chapter’s distinction as one of only 75 ten-star AFP organizations should provide an extra layer of faith in the goodwill of our professional fundraisers. Members such as Vicky Payne and Katherine Curtis, the president of AFP Fort Worth, exemplify the professional excellence and personal integrity that the organization promotes through its monthly meetings. “Since joining AFP Fort Worth, I have made new friends, networked to discuss how to handle challenges, and always leave chapter meetings and trainings inspired and perhaps a little wiser,” says Vicky of the benefits of membership. Monthly meetings occur on the second Monday at the Fort Worth Club. Each lunch meeting begins at 11:30AM, and is open to both members and nonmembers who make advance reservations. The monthly meetings stand as professional development opportunities for anyone interested in fundraising or the development of leadership skills. Presenters share expertise on a wide variety of program topics, and attendees also have the benefit of networking opportunities. Nonmembers can attend these meetings for $30, while members pay only $20 for the monthly meeting that includes lunch. For October, the chapter meeting falls on the 10th, with a scheduled topic of Stewardship and Retention. Members who make meetings on a regular basis not only gain the benefit of each meeting’s program, but also fulfill requirements toward the attainment of the CFRE. For more information on how to join AFP Fort Worth, or to RSVP for a meet-

ing, visit them online at www.afpfortworth.com. You can also check them out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AFPFortWorth.

very once in awhile, a new business captures the soul of a community. For the locals of west Fort Worth, Kat Swift is a familiar face. A photographer and service industry wunderkind, Kat has manned the ship at several area watering-holes. She considers Fort Worth’s music community, centered around Lola’s Saloon, as the true home for herself and husband Steve “Steedo” Smith. Anyone who knows Kat appreciates that beneath the facade of the friendly bartender lurks a chef with some serious culinary chops. Now, with the establishment of her food truck, Miss Happ’s Kitchen, Kat and her husband can share their gospel of delicious cooking and community. Located in the Trailer Park at Lola’s Saloon on West 6th, Miss Happ’s Kitchen has a rotating menu chock-full of home-cooked goodness. Kat holds down the fort as the park’s sole permanent resident, and further establishes Lola’s as the epicenter for authentic west Fort Worth. For Kat, the roll-out of Miss Happ’s Kitchen stands as the natural culmination of her time in Fort Worth. A 20-year veteran of the service industry, this Kat has worn every hat from general manager to prep cook, bartender to waitress. She also graduated from the University of Texas School of Business with a 4.0, so a self-directed entrepreneurial endeavor should come as no surprise. Kat’s recipes embody her unique character, and represent a creative variety of changing styles. Eclecticism serves as a good buzzword, and sums up even the rationale behind the food truck’s name. In the lead-up to opening the food truck, Kat came across the story of a U.S. marine in the Korean War who rescued a kitten from the trenches. The marine named the cat “Miss Hap”, because she was born at the wrong place at the wrong time. “I really liked that,” says Kat. “I feel as if my life has been a series of un-calculated moves and misadventures, yet everything always works out. We’re never short on surprises or adventures.” Stories also imbue Kat’s recipes. Her signature “Bomb Sauce”, a poblano cream sauce that garnishes several menu items, got its name from Kat’s daughter, Kada. “At dinner several years ago, Kada asked ‘What is this sauce? It’s the bomb sauce!’” says Kat. “The name stuck, and I get more compliments on The Bomb Sauce than anything.” Kat first discovered Fort Worth in 2000, when she stopped to visit a friend on her way to Austin. She fell in love with the community she found, the people she met, and the music she heard, so she

SERVICE FLUFF AND FOLD SERVICE TAILORING / ALTERATIONS SHOE REPAIR & SHINE never left. The decision to start her own business actually grew out of unfortunate circumstances. Persistent back problems led to spinal surgery in January of this year. Six months later, Kat still wasn’t cleared to return to bartending. “I started worrying about what capabilities and limitations I would have, and how I would help provide for my family,” says Kat. “A friend of mine asked what I love to do, and my response was ‘feeding people’.” With few resources beyond boundless enthusiasm, experience, and connections to the community, Kat and Steve took only three months to get Miss Happ’s Kitchen off and running. Kat’s righthand man, Bud Mize, assists with the menus and cooking, while the truck itself arrived thanks to Robbie Turman, owner of Oscar’s Pub. “My passion for cooking really grew the six years I worked at Oscar’s Pub,” says Kat. “I also worked for Keith Hicks, who now owns Buttons. I always tried to catch as much knowledge as possible from him.” Other cooking styles and techniques arrived from family and friends, and contribute to the flavorful synthesis that represents Miss Happ’s offerings. For sample items, consider the Greengo Star, which is slow-roasted pork with chili verde sauce over rice; or the chicken and dumplings; or Kat’s signature chili Frito pie. Expect the menu, which you can view at www.misshappsfw.com, to change frequently, as Kat adapts to serve customer’s needs and wants. This fall and winter, Kat plans to debut a more unified concept that builds upon the rave reviews she’s gotten so far. “The biggest reward has been the overwhelming amount of positive feedback I’ve gotten,” says Kat. “Sometimes I can see people open their boxes from the window of my truck, and they get a big smile on their face. That makes me so happy.”

Wilco's Women FORT WORTH'S PREMIER REALTORS GIVE ADVICE FOR YOUNG WOMEN ON THE CUSP OF PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS.

ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

W

ilco Realtors arrived in 2013 to permanently reshape the west Fort Worth realty market. This multi-purpose outfit, spearheaded by Julie Wilkins, broker and president, and Margaret Coulborn, stands as a sterling example for young women who want to control their own destinies through hard work and excellence. The Wilco treatment emphasizes the importance of connection with each and every client — a valuable lesson for any young business-owner. We spoke with Julie and Margaret about what it was like getting their business off the ground, and what advice they have for young women on the cusp of professional life. What kind of background do you each come from, and what was it like getting Wilco Realtors off the ground? Margaret: I’ve been in realty for 23 years. We decided at one point that real estate needed a more modern take, with an emphasis on personal attention. Many brokerage firms at the time were focused on the brokerage. We wanted to make it about the client, about our buyers and sellers. We pursued a small, more modern approach, and we’ve kept it small. Julie: I graduated from TCU in 1996 with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. If that sounds like strange preparation for a career in realty, you’d be surprised by how much fashion marketing translates into real estate. All of my jobs taught me that dedication, a solid work ethic, budgeting, and the development of a solid business plan are the keys to success. I’ve now worked in real estate for 16 years, and getting Wilco off the ground was so fun and exciting. How has the agency grown over the years, and how have you defined yourself in comparison to other realtors? Julie: We began as a small residential sales boutique, and have grown through a fabulous referral system. We place a high value on our service, and we also build on relationships we’ve established with other agents throughout Fort Worth. I like to say that we’ve created an atmosphere like a neighborhood living room. We appreciate when clients pop in to say hi, and we strive to make each and every client feel special. 16

West FW Lifestyle | October 2016

Margaret: We’re truly a one-stop shop for realty. We do home sales, residential, and commercial. We have a property management division, and do HOA management, farm, ranch, and commercial. We work with our clients to figure out their immediate needs, then take them from step one to the finish line. We don’t just say “call me after you get pre-qualified”. Our number one goal is to take the time to listen to clients’ needs. Were there any particular challenges you faced as women in realty? Margaret: Real estate is a women-based industry. Our main challenge was getting our name out there and sharing our mantra. Our focus is the client: we’re there before they start looking, we help them find the perfect house, write the contract, and stay with them every step of the way. With the bigger brokerages, the busier you get, the more you hand off to assistants. We stay focused on the clients. Julie: We’re fortunate enough to work in a city where our business has gotten the support of family, friends, clients, and other professionals in our market. Fort Worth supports its own. We try to repay that through our work with other local business partners. What advice do you have for young women just getting started in their careers? What are the particular rewards and challenges of realty? Margaret: The challenges are balancing family-life and work. You’ve got to start strong and stay strong. Real estate, in particular, is hard to do 50 percent of the time. You have to stay on top of your industry, and the rules and regulations. There are so many people who get into it thinking they’ll make a million bucks their first year. Staying knowledgeable is a full-time job, and the more knowledge you have, the better you can serve your clients. Julie: The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce is a great place for young professionals to get acquainted with other business owners and executives. Real estate is a non-stop career. The rewards are enormous, and come from helping others solve challenges. We serve our clients from the moment they walk in our door, to the moment they sit at the closing table. o one struggles to describe what makes west Fort Worth special. An entrenched sense of community, combined with a small-town “local” feel, one-of-a-kind businesses, and a general sense of comfort and neighborliness all combine to infuse this historic section of a great city with its own charm. It’s impossible to select a single person to showcase a community; for west Fort Worth, however, a representative group of women embody the warmth, ingenuity, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit that make our little piece of the world special.

Bringing Beauty to the Bricks

Darla Bettencourt Darla Bettencourt has always known where her heart lay: with flowers, and the joy she could bring to others through her efforts as a florist. What began as an after-school gig has blossomed into a flourishing career — one where beauty sprouts on a daily basis from the storefront at 5023 Camp Bowie Boulevard. “I had to pay for my first car, and the florist had a sign in the window,” says Darla. “I started there just shy of 18, and now I’m 42, and it’s all I’ve ever done. I managed other florists, and about five years ago decided it was time to open my own." The years since Blossoms on the Bricks opened have seen a burst of success. Such was the success of Darla’s bridal offerings, that she recently opened a second space specifically for weddings. Darla can credit her success to a host of factors: painstaking attention to detail, high-quality merchandise, and exceptional customer service. One more contributing factor cannot be denied, however: location, and the support of the west Fort Worth community. “Being here on the bricks was my number one priority,” says Darla. “I love the history of Camp Bowie, and there’s just something special about west Fort Worth. The customers are just unbelievable." All businesses want repeat customers, but few work as hard to earn loyalty as Blossoms on the Bricks. Through detailed records and a genuine personal investment, Darla and her team remember customer preferences and allergies, and strive to keep the service as bright and fresh as the flowers. For Darla, the rewards of this hard work extend far beyond the financial: “To see someone smile, and their surprise and joy when we deliver, that’s why we want to continue what we’re doing. It just makes our day to see all that happiness.”

Texas Breast Specialists of Southwest Fort Worth, a part of Texas Oncology located at 6500 Harris Parkway, counts Jennifer Snow as one of its invaluable team members. A doctor of osteopathic medicine who specializes in breast surgery, Dr. Snow works daily to save the lives and raise the healthful awareness of our mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters. An insidious killer, breast cancer often maximizes its sense of tragedy through the element of surprise. “Most people don’t realize how common it is,” says Dr. Snow. “Twelve percent of women, or 1 in 8, will get breast cancer. The recommendation is that at the age of 40, you start getting yearly mammograms. Early detection is what makes breast cancer a treatable disease.” Healthful living also helps discourage the disease. Dr. Snow recommends that all women strive to maintain an ideal body weight, exercise at least 2.5 hours a week, drink fewer than 2.5 alcoholic beverages each week, stay away from cigarettes, and pursue a low-fat diet. “These are things that decrease breast cancer risk, along with other cancers in general,” says Dr. Snow. “You should also know family history as a risk factor. If you’re at increased risk, you may CONTINUED > need screenings at an earlier age." October 2016 | West FW Lifestyle

Community of Caring

Jennifer Williams Jennifer Williams has worked for Morsco, the parent company of Fort Worth’s Morrison Supply and Expressions Home Gallery, for the past 14 years. As the company’s marketing director, Jennifer is constantly looking for ways to engage the area she calls home. One of the most important ways has been through philanthropy — giving back to the community that has helped Morrison Supply and Expressions Home Gallery become leaders in their respective industries. As a board member for the Greater Fort Worth Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Jennifer works to raise awareness and research funds for a pernicious and chronic disease. This October 15th, you can join Jennifer in the fight against diabetes at the JDRF One Walk at Panther Island Pavilion. “Morrison Supply Company and Expressions are the presenting sponsors,” says Jennifer. “You can create a team of family and friends and walk in support of a child with diabetes. It’s a great family fun day, with music, free food, face-painting and jump-houses for the kids." In addition to philanthropic intent, Jennifer has personal reasons to support diabetes research: she was herself diagnosed with the disease at 15. “It’s just so common now,” says Jennifer. “People don’t know the symptoms, so it goes undiagnosed until they wind up in the hospital. Most of the time it’s kids that are hospitalized, and JDRF works to raise awareness among children as well." A celebration of community, good times at Panther Island Pavilion, and support for children’s diabetes; what better way to spend a day? For more information, or to pre-register your team, visit www.jdrf.org, and click “events.” 22

If you’ve lived in west Fort Worth for awhile, the entire area can feel like home. For the particulars of an actual residence, however, many of the area’s homeowners have put their faith in Bonnie Pressley’s Decorating Den. One of 300 Decorating Den franchises worldwide, Bonnie’s location has distinguished itself through design expertise, attention to detail, and a comprehensive vision. “We’re very hands-on,” says Bonnie. “We can do absolutely everything, and have contractors to help with every facet of a remodel or decorating project. We do small projects like window treatments, up to large projects like floors, ceiling, and hardwire lighting." While many design firms require a minimum purchase, Decorating Den does not — there is no hourly charge, and the cost of their design expertise gets included in the cost of products. If you’ve ever shied from the necessity of a remodel, or decided to trust your own abilities, Bonnie has some advice: “In the long-run, a professional service saves money. People will look at magazines or the internet for inspiration, and they’ll make mistakes, wish they hadn’t bought something, etc. If you let us handle it, it’s designed just for you, not copied from a magazine, and is unique in function and beauty." As for young ladies who someday want to own a business, Bonnie preaches patience and perseverance. “Expect a rollercoaster ride. It’s not always easy, but if you focus on the long-term, the wonderful ‘ups’ will outweigh the ‘downs.’ The independence and excitement of taking care of people — that’s what makes you feel like a winner."

Bouncing Back after Baby SARAH CORNETT -- ONCE AGAIN A NEW MOTHER -- HAS SOME ADVICE TO HELP OTHERS RETAKE THEIR BODIES. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

T

he Pilates Concept, a fully equipped Pilates studio located at 4201 Camp Bowie Boulevard, brings the benefits of core fitness and movement therapy to Fort Worth’s Cultural District. Men and women of all ages have sought out owner Sarah Cornett and her team to help with fitness goals and injury rehabilitation. In particular, many women turn to Pilates to retake control of their bodies after pregnancy. In this regard, Sarah can combine her professional expertise with firsthand experience: she recently returned to work following the birth of her second child. We asked Sarah a few questions about her experience in recovery, and what suggestions she has for other new mothers.

Q

How have you adapted your own workout routine in the aftermath of having a child? What about the routines of clients who have recently had children?

A Sarah: I didn’t have a caesarean and was lucky to avoid stitches,

so I was able to ease back into my workouts pretty quickly. For me, I’ve struggled with hyper-mobility, thanks to years of ballet and the hormone relaxin. Because of this, I’ve needed to be careful about over-stretching and overloading my joints. Luckily, as a low-impact exercise, Pilates strengthens stability throughout the body. Every woman’s body reacts to pregnancy differently. Depending on a client’s prenatal workout routine, delivery, and post-natal body, the workout approach can vary. A couple of important exercises for all women after a baby are to walk and to continue their pelvic floor exercises. Six weeks postpartum is when most women visit their OBGYN to learn if they can resume regular exercise.

24

West FW Lifestyle | October 2016

Q: What are some common fitness struggles you see new mothers experience?

Sarah: Women want to lose their baby weight quickly and return to their high-energy workout, which is a huge struggle. Between postpartum blues, hormonal changes, incontinence, and diastasis, women need to set realistic goals and understand that everyone’s bodies react differently to pregnancy. Try to get moving early, even if it’s just short walks with the baby. Women need to be careful not to overwork their rectus abdominis, and avoid overloading their bodies. The hormone relaxin still circulates while breastfeeding, which means the body has more laxity than normal.

Q: Are there ways to involve a newborn or young infant in a simple workout routine? Sarah: Yes! I loved wearing my boys in a vast array of carriers. While wearing the baby, the mother can do calf raises, lunges, squats, push-ups or tricep dips on the back of the couch, and many more easy exercises. I used a mat, ab ball, resistance band, and light weights at home. You can also take them on long walks. Working out and getting fresh air can really help elevate a mother’s mood. Q:

What are some strategies you recommend for anyone who struggles to get into a workout routine? Sarah: Start small, even if it’s just going out for a walk. You can also find a friend to work out with, which helps with

accountability. Sign up for a class that has an instructor to guide you, and try several different types of workouts to see which your body responds to the best.

Q: Do you have a set program you institute for new mothers? In addition to Pilates, can you recommend other types of workouts? Sarah: Pilates is great because it is a therapeutic exercise program with instructors who specialize in injuries and clients’ particular needs. We don’t have a set workout for new moms, but we do have guidelines for exercises to incorporate or avoid, depending on the mother’s body. For example, we can work on opening the chest and strengthening back extensors, the pelvic floor, or transverse abdomens, while avoiding excessive rectus abdominus work. I also find yoga to be a great mental approach for new mothers that need a Zen aspect for dealing with the chaos of little ones at home. Pilates and yoga alike are mind-body exercise routines. As for other workouts, it depends on the woman. For example, if a woman has been doing Crossfit for years, then she could be able to return to it. Many women, however, can’t handle that type of workout, and might hurt themselves. It’s all about finding what your body reacts to, and what you enjoy. Building a Better Texas CAMP FIRE HELPS RAISE THE BOYS AND GIRLS THAT BECOME THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW -- AND THEY NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

T

he outdoors are a special place for children. Unburdened by the distractions of screens and toys, imaginations bloom, games take shape, and self-sufficiency gets encouraged alongside curiosity, physical activity, and respect for the environment. Many of us have fond memories of Camp Fire. For some an after-school program, for others a precursor to other clubs, we gathered to learn about nature and crafts, raised money for charity, and wore our patch-bedecked vests with pride. Camp Fire has done an immeasurable amount of good for the children and communities of Fort Worth. Established in 1914, Camp Fire First Texas has created generations of confident and empathetic leaders who share their gifts throughout North Texas. If your memories contain recollections of Blue Birds, Camp Fire Girls, and bake-sale fundraisers, you may feel shocked to learn how much Camp Fire has grown. One of the largest organizations of its kind, Camp Fire’s programs serve girls and boys alike, and cover everything from school prep to outdoor skills. “Within the services we offer, the key social impact areas come down to work, health, and love,” says Randi Mitchell, board member of Camp Fire First Texas. “Within that, Camp Fire focuses on service learning, volunteerism, the health of the whole child, and fosters a love of the outdoors.” Camp Fire’s slogan, “light the fire within”, sums up well the benefits that children gain from participation. An exploration into service, as well as connection within the community, can

inspire children to an understanding of how they can serve the world around them. Children with knowledge of their intrinsic value approach life with greater confidence, and feel prepared to take on challenges from the school-room to the campsite. “People who participated in the program years ago may not see all that Camp Fire does now,” says Randi. “The most notable difference is how programs get delivered. While it used to be mainly club and home-based, it now occurs in early childhood programs.” Camp Fire extends its reach to teens through the Step Up program, which helps at-risk high school students graduate and lay the groundwork for a promising future. Camp Fire also provides development training for teachers, and maintains the outdoor connection through overnight campouts and summer day camps. If you can appreciate what Camp Fire does for our community, or know firsthand a child who looks forward to her after-school Camp Fire activities, you can support the organization through a pair of upcoming events. The Bingo, Brew and View occurs on October 3rd at the Collective Brewing Project at 112 St. Louis Avenue. This social event serves as a preview and warm-up for Camp Fire’s 32nd annual An Artists’ Christmas on November 12th. Attendees at the Bingo, Brew and View can view digital representations of the artwork available at the gala auction, play games, bingo, and compete for door prizes to benefit Camp Fire. Tickets are available for $25, which covers unlimited beverages and the cost of all games. The gala, An Artists’ Christmas, stands as one of Fort Worth’s premier annual events. Held once again at the Fort Worth Zoo, the gala presents 80 pieces of original art available for live and silent auction. Additionally, live auction packages include opportunities to win lavish trips and other one-of-a-kind experiences. As the premier art auction in North Texas, An Artists’ Christmas serves to not only celebrate the work of regional artists, but also their solidarity with Camp Fire’s mission and goals. Since 1984, the event has raised nearly $4 million to support Camp Fire, its programs, and the youth of North Texas. “This is our premier fundraising event, and attendees can expect a beautifully planned evening,” says Randi. “There will be a cocktail reception and seated dinner, live music and dancing, and because it’s at the zoo, we can expect some special surprise guests.” The funds raised at these events are critical to Camp Fire’s continued operation. As far as community impacts, it’s hard to overstate the value of what Camp Fire does. Whether it’s providing children with a fun, safe, and inclusive space to learn and grow, or showing them how to form lasting connections between themselves and the world, Camp Fire has long shaped the dynamic leaders that Fort Worth needs. Last year alone, Camp Fire served 25,000 people. To support its efforts, visit CampFireFW.org and plan attendance at one of its events.

P

ets hold a special place in our hearts. When considered objectively, the attention we shower on four-legged, winged, or scaled companions borders on the absurd. All of the toys and trips to the groomer make sense only when you consider the intense emotional bond that people form with animals. We’ve all seen our dogs ‘smile,’ and the personality quirks of cats are legendary. Our attachment to pets explains the seriousness of resolve to improve welfare for all animals. We feel sorry for a lonely dog in a shelter, because we know firsthand its capability for love and affection. Joe Berry, owner of Winslow’s Wine Cafe, goes above and beyond in these efforts. Last fall, his Winslow’s Memorial event raised about $10,000 for the retired police dogs of Fort Worth’s K9 unit. “Even though we raised about 10k for the retired K9s, the real winner was the exposure,” says Joe. “Some philanthropists who were at the event organized another gathering where 30 people raised $10,000 per dog. They brought in the fire-rescue and bomb squad dogs, and raised money to have bullet-proof vests made for them.” The memorial event, along with Joe’s wine cafe, are both named for Winslow, a dearly departed blue heeler. While Joe was brainstorming ideas for his restaurant, Winslow’s appearance on the porch served to signify an ideal name. After Winslow’s death in February of 2015, Joe decided to honor his beloved dog with an annual memorial to raise money for other animals. 28

West FW Lifestyle | October 2016

The second annual Winslow’s Memorial will take place on October 23rd. Each year, Joe plans to select a different honoree; this time around, the Humane Society of North Texas and K-9 Support will share the benefits of Winslow’s memory. “In all of Texas, HSNT is the only place that accepts all kinds of animals,” says Joe. “Another thing that touched me about them is that a few weeks ago, when the floods happened in Baton Rouge, they went and got dozens of dogs, from local shelters to help make room for incoming flood victims animals.” In particular, Joe and HSNT hope to raise money to purchase and staff an additional adoption trailer. HSNT’s adoption trailer travels around North Texas, and transports animals to promote adoption and adoption awareness. “My whole focus is on adopting dogs,” says Joe. “We’re trying to raise funds to get another employee and trailer, so they can adopt out as many dogs as possible.” Sandy Shelby, executive director of HSNT, elaborates on the needs of her organization’s adoption efforts:

“One of our greatest challenges is wanting to do more adoptions, but being limited on resources. We get asked to be out in the community, but we have to limit how much we can do.” HSNT’s efforts extend well beyond adoptions, and cover a range of animal-related needs in North Texas. HSNT is currently the

largest and only open-door facility in the area, which means they set no boundaries on the animals they accept. HSNT also does cruelty investigations, and maintains dedicated adoption facilities to try and find good homes for needy animals. The group also has a senior outreach program, Rae of Hope, that helps older citizens in assisted living facilities receive assistance with their pets. If you have room in your heart and home for a new pet, HSNT will have its adoption trailer at Winslow’s Wine Cafe the night of the event. In addition to these animals, a special group of “racer” puppies will be present. Joe Berry explains: “There will be eight puppies, which you can adopt at the end of the evening. Before that, each one will have a bid sheet for a race. You can bid to sponsor a puppy, and if you have the highest bid on the winner of the race, you get to meet your puppy at the finish line and award them a basket of treats.” All money raised from the puppy race, in addition to money from an on-site auction and ticket sales, will go towards HSNT’s efforts to buy a new trailer. Tickets for the second annual Winslow’s Memorial are on sale now for $125. The evening includes wine and cheese pairings, light hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to benefit an exceptional cause. To buy tickets, call Winslow’s Wine Cafe at 817.731.6515. You can also visit them online at www.winslowswinecafe.com. hether meandering the fertile valleys of the Napa and Sonoma regions of California, or scaling the craggy mountains of uncertain or changing friendships, there are interesting parallels to be drawn between wine and friendships. No matter your expertise in either area, it’s always about making good choices and trusting your taste. Oh, and I’d add quality cheese to any wine or friendship just for good measure! 1. 3. Wine and people change over time. Respect the amount of time you invest in each. 4. If “Two-Buck-Chuck” is ruining your party, send him on his way and take him off of the list. 5. Stock your pantry. You can’t have too many friends or good bottles of wine. 6. If you can’t afford ‘em, stay away from ‘em. 7. Moderation is always a good idea. 8. Pretty labels are just that. 9. Good food makes everything better. 10. Our existence is only made more enjoyable by good wine and good friends.
